We would like to thank you a lot for your great contribution to our wonderful boating vacation we had in Holland. You helped us a lot in giving all the information need about boating, since it was our first boating vacation.

We sailed for the first time in 2006. For the time of year we had very good weather. But we didn’t dare dream that April 2007 would also have fantastic weather in store for us. Together with another couple we really enjoyed the surroundings..

Holland Boating Holidays

Boats and canals are a way of life in Holland , and boating on Dutch waterways lets you see the real Holland. Travel the landscape of famous painters, admire traditional windmills , use the many waterside cycle routes, and moor at neatly kept marinas.

Cruising is very relaxed from spring tulip time to autumn, with many locks left open throughout the summer months, and the occasional lift bridge a good place to meet fellow travellers. Moor close to the many canal-side bars and cafes offering good food and traditional Dutch hospitality.

Easy cruising on friendly waterways

Navigate the canals and waterways to Amsterdam and explore this exciting cosmopolitan city. See Old Masters at the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh exhibition , or just soak up the amazing sights.

In Amsterdam you can moor in the Six Haven marina, a ferry ride across the ship canal from the central station. It may be possible to cruise your boat through the city canals, but care is needed, plus permit purchase. Or take one of the many canal cruise trips. We recommend taking the regular train to Amsterdam from Weesp, about 10 minutes by rail.

Our bases at Vinkeveen and Loosdrecht give access to Amsterdam. In 2016 we at Boating Holidays organised a penichette boat from Loosdrecht for Timothy West and Prunella Scales to use for filming one of their Great Canal Journeys TV programmes.

North of Amsterdam you can cruise to Edam , famous for its distinctive cheese, and cross the Zaan country, full of windmills and rich in wildlife.

The famous Keukenhof Gardens are west of Amsterdam, near Haarlem, with millions of tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and other bulbs flowering in Spring.

South from Amsterdam cruise the River Vecht past ancient townhouses lining the canal through Loosdrecht to the great art centre of Utrecht. Moor at the quaysides or by the cathedral (limited height) and climb the 465 steps in the Dom Tower. Further on reach beautiful Gouda where the marina is in the middle of the old town.

The Friesland region in north Holland has many glistening lakes for watersports and friendly towns and coastal villages to explore such as Grouw, Workum or Makkum, and Bolsward. Our new cruiser base at Hindeloopen is located at a historic fishing village.

The Dutch waterways give you many miles of lock-free cruising, with many opportunities for cycling in the flat countryside. A boating holiday is the best way to see the real Holland.

Useful Information:

• All locks and lifting bridges are manned by lock-keepers, with breaks for lunch and tea (usually 12:00 -13:00 and 16:15-17:15). You need to pay a small charge (€1.50 - €2.50) to pass through the locks
• There are plenty of marinas for shore power, facilities and canal-side-moorings. (Small charges may apply)
• Visit Amsterdam by taking a train from moorings at Weesp, or moor opposite Amsterdam Central Station and use the free 24-hours ferry to the city centre

Sailing is so much a way of life for the Dutch that it has even given birth to a particular style of boat - the ‘vedette hollandaise' Dutch cruiser. Tulips, windmills, drawbridges, fishing villages, Gouda cheese and Dutch painting are not just clichés; they are what this country is all about.

You can travel to the Netherlands by train or by car since the country is served by excellent rail and motorway networks, although air travel is another good option, with Amsterdam boasting one of the largest airports in Europe.

Not to be missed

• The Dutch have been fighting to drain water from their land for centuries, building dykes, of course, and becoming specialist in mills, too, the oldest of these being a watermill dating back to the 8th Century. Unsurprisingly, windmills are now part of the landscape here and have even become one of the national symbols of the Netherlands.
• The Dutch built inclined planes, boat funiculars, lift bridges, swing bridges and various other engineering structures that are sure to attract your attention to enable these Dutch-built cruisers (and of course other types of boat) to sail around the country.
• Cheese production in the Netherlands dates back to the pre-Christian era and is an industry that has developed to such an extent that the country has become the world's largest cheese exporter. Head to Gouda, Edam or Alkmaar and you'll get the opportunity to attend a traditional cheese sale of the sort that has been taking place for some six hundred years.
• The tulip, which was originally imported from Turkey and Iran, is by no means the only flower produced in the Netherlands, which has become the largest producer of flowers and plants for distribution, and you will undoubtedly come across plenty of floral displays to admire during your stay.
• On another note, the Netherlands has also played host to the workshops of many a great painter, including Rembrandt and Vermeer.

A few stops along the way

The city of Sneek is very well known for its nautical scene, which attracts many visitors every year, as well as its Watergate, a 17th-Century gateway that spans the canal and was once part of its defence system.

With its drawbridge and its moats, Muiderslot castle is guaranteed to appeal to children.

You will probably have already heard of Gouda before visiting the Netherlands. Cheese has been sold in the same way here for centuries, in the marketplace close to the city hall (which happens to be the oldest Gothic city hall in the Netherlands), but that's not all the city is known for; indeed, its caramel syrup waffles, the stroopwafels, among other delights, are a must for any visitor to the city.

Keukenhof park is home to over seven million bulb flowers (tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, orchids, roses, carnations, irises, lilies and many more), all superbly arranged to decorate both the gardens and the park's four pavilions. Keukenhof is by far the most beautiful floral park you're likely to see anywhere in the world.

Police identify man who died after falling overboard on Reeds Lake

KENT COUNTY, MI – Police identified Roger Bruins, 75, of Holland, as the man who died after falling from a fishing boat on Reeds Lake.

East Grand Rapids public-safety officers responded around 11:40 a.m. Friday, March 8, to a report of a man overboard. Bruins could not hold onto the boat or reach a life jacket that was thrown to him by others on the boat.

He was unresponsive when rescuers reached him about 50 feet from the boat. He was in critical condition when taken to Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital. He died the next day.

The two others with him stayed on the boat as it was taking on water, police said. They were taken to shore for medical treatment.

Funeral services are 2 p.m. Friday, March 15, at Rosewood Reformed Church at 2795 Rosewood St. in Jenison.

Friends can visit his family from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home at 4145 Chicago Dr. SW in Grandville.

“Roger was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He loved the outdoors and traveling with his family,” his obituary said.
