Exclusive: Andrew Tate's Alleged Victim Speaks Out After 'Silly' Lawsuit

Andrew Tate's "audacity" to sue one of his alleged trafficking victims "strains the imagination," her lawyer has told Newsweek .

The notorious British-American YouTube personality is seeking $5 million from a group of defendants he says caused his arrest in Bucharest in December 2022. Tate and his brother, Tristan, were held by the Romanian organized crime squad, DIICOT, on charges of forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women, human trafficking and evidence tampering. They have said they are innocent.

In July, the Tate brothers filed a lawsuit in Florida against five people, two of whom were women found at the compound by the authorities when DIICOT raided. The other defendants include a parent of a defendant and a male friend. That woman, named as Jane Doe, and her parents are American citizens and residents of Florida.

The second woman, whom Newsweek is naming as Mary Doe, was allegedly wooed to Romania by Tate under the belief she was in "a romantic relationship" with him.

Now, the Tates are suing her for defamation and claiming she "somehow caused their imprisonment," which caused them "emotional damages," according to Mary's attorney, Jill Roth.

"She was very young and fell in love with him by meeting him online and having a lot of really deep, emotional, spiritual conversations," Roth told Newsweek in an exclusive interview.

According to Roth, that all turned out to be a lie. She said the Romanian-Moldovan national was convinced to move from her home in the U.K. to be with Tate.

"So now we find ourselves having to defend a woman who is a human trafficking and sexual assault victim because her perpetrators accusing her for being the reason he was ever in jail," Roth said.

She added that Tate and his legal team must have done "logistical gymnastics" to come up with the reasoning for the lawsuit, especially to file it in Palm Beach, Florida.

Roth said they filed in Florida because Jane called her parents to tell them about what was happening to her on the phone from Romania.

"So their argument, which I disagree with, is that the cause of the harm and the action that caused them harm happened in Florida and the United States."

Roth added: "It feels almost silly to say it out loud. It's wild. It strains the imagination of the audacity of anyone taking this type of action against someone who they have perpetrated sexual crimes against."

But the Tate brothers defended their decision to pursue legal action in a statement to Newsweek.

"The U.S. constitution grants the right of every individual to seek justice in a court of law. The brothers are simply pursuing their constitutional right. The recent Eleanor Williams case in the U.K. is a relevant precedent that explains why such legal actions are sometimes necessary," a spokesperson for the brothers said.

Williams was 22 when she was convicted in January for perverting the course of justice after claiming she had been groomed and trafficked by an Asian gang, and for accusing other men of rape. She had posted photos of herself looking bruised to Facebook in 2020 where she fabricated the allegations, which sparked a worldwide solidarity campaign called "Justice for Ellie."

The judge in the English court sentenced Williams to eight and a half years in jail, saying her actions posed "a risk that genuine victims will be reluctant as a result of this to come forward," per The Guardian.

However, research has found that false allegations of sexual assault and rape are very low , and may even be inflated due to fallacies within the police procedures and the legal process.

"Research shows that rates of false reporting are frequently inflated, in part because of inconsistent definitions and protocols, or a weak understanding of sexual assault," according to one study by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center.

"Misconceptions about false reporting rates have direct, negative consequences and can contribute to why many victims don't report sexual assaults."

Roth describes Mary as a strong young woman who would stand firm in the face of the lawsuit and recovery from the alleged abuse at the hands of Tate but can't deny the ordeal has "taken a toll on her life."

According to Roth, an unredacted copy version of Tate's Romanian criminal indictment leaked online which revealed her identity and led to months of doxxing and threats. One person found all of her family's addresses and threatened to go to their homes and send them inappropriate photos of her.

Another allegedly copied all of her LinkedIn contacts and warned her to redact her statement against Tate otherwise he would email her professional contacts with "lies and terrible accusations." Mary even had to take time away from work after someone learned the address and threatened to come down to hurt her.

"Imagine being a young professional out of school starting out in your career. It's hard enough as it is... but now you're having someone that you don't know from somewhere else in the world, contacting people that you work with and telling them the most vile lies about you," Roth says.

Roth also suggests Tate filed the lawsuit as a means to intimidate Mary or at least embarrass her publicly.

"What they're really doing is saying, if you keep speaking out about me, I'm going to make you pay," she explains.

"Also one of the intentions is really an opportunity to air everything out in a public document. Anything that they want about to say about their victim they can now do legally... you can put anything you want on a piece of paper and upload it to the docket as long as you pay the couple $100 fee to do that in United States, and it becomes public."

In fact, two out of every three sexual assaults in the U.S. are not reported to police, with one of the major reason given as the fear of retaliation, according to anti-sexual violence organization RAINN.

Roth and her team, including lawyers from the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, are working to have the lawsuit dismissed.

Tate was a professional mixed martial artist before he joined the reality series Big Brother U.K. in 2016, gaining notoriety for his misogynistic comments. A series of tweets also emerged while he was in the Big Brother house that included racist and homophobic comments.

He was eventually removed from the house because of what he claimed was a video leaked showed him whipping a woman with a belt in what appeared to be a sex act. Tate said the act was consensual.

But the production company that made Big Brother told Newsweek that it learned while the show was running that Tate was the subject of a police investigation.

"Extensive background checks are made on all potential housemates including criminal record checks and self-declaration of any criminal matters. Given that no charges had been made against Andrew Tate at the time, the criminal record checks available to us were clear," a spokesperson Banijay UK told Newsweek . Banijay purchased Endemol, which previously produced Big Brother in 2020.

"However as soon as we were made aware by Hertfordshire Police on 8th June 2016 that Andrew Tate was being investigated by the police, we began a process of extensive consultation with Channel 5, and legal teams, including the lawyers representing Andrew Tate.

"During this period, and whilst we sought to clarify the detail required by Channel 5, Andrew was closely monitored at all times. He was removed from the house on 13th June."

In 2013, an unnamed woman accused Tate of rape in the U.K, but police never charged him with a crime. Two other women reportedly accused Tate of similar treatment but prosecutors decided in 2019 not to pursue charges.

Following his arrest in Romania, where he awaiting trial, four women in the U.K. filed a civil suit against him and accused him of multiple crimes against them between 2013 and 2016, including rape, physical violence and coercive control. He has also denied these claims.

Describing himself as the "king of toxic masculinity," Tate was temporarily barred from a number of social media platforms including Twitter and Instagram due to his derogatory remarks about women and LGBTQ people, and domestic violence organizations accused Tate of radicalizing boys and men.

Tate offered courses in cryptocurrency and also for men to teach them how to lead an "ultra-masculine, ultra-luxurious lifestyle."

Before his arrest in Romania, he split his time between Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and his "Hustler's University" compound in Bucharest.

Andrew Tate Can Be Extradited to Britain After Romanian Trial, Court Rules

Mr. Tate and his brother, Tristan, were arrested on charges made between 2012 and 2015, which include allegations of sexual aggression, a spokesman said.

Andrew Tate, the wealth-flaunting online influencer known for his misogynistic views, and his brother, Tristan, can be extradited to Britain to face sex crime charges after their trial in Romania concludes, the Bucharest Court of Appeal said on Tuesday.

The brothers were taken into custody Monday night in Romania on a European arrest warrant issued by the British authorities, the Romanian police said.

The charges related to the arrest were made between 2012 and 2015 and include allegations of sexual aggression, a spokesman for Mr. Tate said. The spokesman added that the charges had since been dismissed by the Crown Prosecution Service.

The police in Romania said in a brief statement that the arrest warrants were for sexual crimes and the exploitation of individuals in Britain. The men were ordered detained for 24 hours, it said. The court in Bucharest said in its extradition ruling on Tuesday that the brothers could be released.

Eugen Vidineac, a lawyer for the brothers, said the ruling “provides an opportunity for the brothers to participate fully in their defense and for the legal process to proceed in a transparent manner.”

It was unclear which British force had issued the warrant that led to Monday’s arrest.

The Bedfordshire Police in England said in a statement on Tuesday that it was working with the authorities in Romania. “As part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of rape and human trafficking, Bedfordshire Police has obtained a European Arrest Warrant for two men in their 30s,” the police said.

Mr. Tate’s spokesman said the brothers “categorically reject all charges and express profound disappointment that such serious allegations are being resurrected without substantial new evidence.”

McCue Jury and Partners, a law firm in Britain, said in a statement on Tuesday that it was representing four British women who have accused Mr. Tate of “rape and serious physical and sexual assaults.”

The firm said that it received information last week that Mr. Tate might have been planning to flee Romania, where he faced other charges. The firm passed that information on to the British police, urging them to seek a warrant for Mr. Tate’s arrest and extradition to Britain.

“We are grateful that the British authorities have decided to take action and take heed of our concerns,” the firm said.

Matthew Jury, a managing partner at the law firm, confirmed in an email that the lawyers believed Mr. Tate planned to flee after seeing a video where Adin Ross , an online streamer, said that Mr. Tate sent him a text message that said, “I’m going to be leaving Romania soon and probably never coming back.”

A spokeswoman for Mr. Tate denied that the brothers had planned to flee Romania. “We believe this rumor has originated from a popular online influencer who misconstrued a text message from our clients while streaming live,” the spokeswoman said.

Mr. Tate, who regularly uses various platforms to broadcast his virulent brand of male chauvinism, posted on social media Tuesday morning, “The Matrix is afraid, but I only fear God.”

Mr. Tate, a former professional kickboxer, and his brother were separately charged in 2022 with forming an organized criminal group and engaging in human trafficking across Romania, Britain and the United States.

Some details of those charges have been kept confidential, but an official in the prosecutor’s office in Romania confirmed that the 2022 case included accusations of rape against Mr. Tate. The brothers have denied the accusations and maintain their innocence.

It was not immediately clear when a trial in that case would begin.

Mr. Tate’s profile grew after he appeared as a contestant on the British reality show “Big Brother” in 2016. He was kicked off the show, according to The Sun, after a video surfaced of him hitting a woman with a belt, an act that he and the woman said was consensual.

He has amassed millions of followers, many of them young men, by claiming that men are victims of feminism and that women “belong” to men and need men’s guidance.

Because Mr. Tate’s views have reached so many school-aged boys, education officials across Britain have been scrambling to mitigate his influence . In fact, some are using class time to discuss Mr. Tate.

British U.S. former professional kickboxer and controversial influencer Andrew Tate (center) and his brother Tristan Tate (back right) speak to journalists after having been released from detention in Bucharest, Romania, Tuesday.

LONDON — Grainy footage from Romanian police shows a man dubbed the " king of toxic masculinity " being detained in the dead of night, along with his brother, then hauled into a Bucharest court in handcuffs.

Within hours, a judge there Tuesday approved the extradition of Andrew and Tristan Tate to the United Kingdom, where they face charges of sexual aggression in a case that dates back more than a decade. But the judge said the Tate brothers won't actually be sent to the U.K. until after they face trial in Romania on separate charges of human trafficking, rape and forming a criminal group to sexually exploit women.

Andrew Tate, 37, describes himself as a misogynist. He's a British American social media influencer, businessman and former professional kickboxer who has amassed nearly 9 million followers on X , formerly Twitter. Many of them are schoolboys — something that has sparked concern among educators worldwide.

Several women in different countries have accused Tate of rape, sexual assault, human trafficking — and of bragging about those crimes on social media. Aside from criminal cases in the U.K. and Romania, he also faces a separate civil case in the U.K.

Tate says he's the victim of a conspiracy against men who embrace their masculinity. It's unclear what charges his brother Tristan faces. Both deny any wrongdoing.

How did Andrew Tate get his online following?

Andrew Tate rose to fame after he was removed from the British version of the reality TV show Big Brother in 2016, following the release of a video that appeared to show him attacking a woman. He claims the video was edited and amounts to "a total lie to make me look bad."

Tate has been banned from other social media platforms, including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and YouTube, for posts deemed derogatory to women. The former Twitter briefly banned him after he wrote in 2017 that women should bear "some responsibility" for being sexually assaulted. His account has since been reinstated.

He has also written descriptions online of how he might attack women, and has criticized people who seek mental health treatment.

While he does not have a TikTok account himself, videos with the #AndrewTate hashtag have been watched billions of times on the video platform, making him one of its most viewed figures. The hashtag also includes some videos by people criticizing him.

What's the Romanian case against him?

Romanian authorities arrested the Tate brothers in December 2022 and later placed them under house arrest in the town of Voluntari, on the outskirts of Bucharest. The brothers are accused of exploiting women via an adult content business, which prosecutors allege operated as a criminal group. Authorities said seized 15 luxury cars, 14 designer watches and cash in several currencies worth a total of nearly $4 million .

Romania's anti-organized crime agency says the Tates and two other defendants subjected their recruits to "acts of physical violence and mental coercion," sexually exploited them and forced them to perform in pornography intended to reap "important financial benefits."

Andrew Tate (center left) and his brother Tristan Tate (center right) arrive at the Court of Appeal in Bucharest, Romania, on Feb. 27, 2023.

In that case, the Tate brothers face charges of being part of an organized crime group, human trafficking and rape. They deny everything. In January, Tate won an appeal challenging the seizure of some of his assets.

On Tuesday, the Romanian appeals court judge ruled that only after Romanian proceedings are complete, will the Tate brothers be extradited to the U.K. It is unclear how long that could take.

What are the U.K. cases against him?

In a statement emailed Tuesday to journalists, a local police force north of London, where Tate used to live, said it had obtained a European arrest warrant.

"As part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of rape and human trafficking, Bedfordshire Police has obtained a European Arrest Warrant for two men in their 30s," it read. "We are working with authorities in Romania as part of this investigation." That case dates back to 2012-2015.

Separately, four of Tate's alleged victims in the U.K. have set up a crowdfunding site to cover their legal costs in a civil case they are pursuing against him. They had reported Tate to British authorities for alleged sexual violence, but their claims did not advance to prosecution.

"We filed complaints with the authorities for rape and physical abuse in 2014 and 2015 alongside witness testimony and damning documentary evidence. The CPS [Crown Prosecution Service] then decided not to take the matter any further," their website says. "It's our one remaining routes to hold him accountable."

A law firm representing alleged victims in the U.K. civil case, McCue Jury & Partners, says it contacted authorities after spotting a commentary online that suggested Tate may be preparing to flee Romania and any prosecution there.

That's what may have led to the Tates' detention late Monday.

"We are grateful" that authorities took action," the firm said Tuesday in a statement .

In response, a spokesperson for Andrew Tate said in a statement quoted by Britain's Press Association : "We unequivocally deny any accusations that Andrew or Tristan Tate intends to abscond from Romania to evade the judicial proceedings."

"Our clients are fully committed to actively participating in the legal process and defending their reputation," it said.

The brothers were released immediately after Tuesday's court appearance. They are required to remain in Romania. Their trial date there has not been released.

After his release, Andrew Tate posted an update on X : "The Matrix is afraid, but I only fear God."

"The Matrix" is a term he has used in the past to describe what he sees as a conspiracy against him.

Romanian court grants UK’s request to extradite Andrew Tate, once local legal cases are concluded

Online influencer Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan Tate arrived at the Court of Appeal in Bucharest on Tuesday after British authorities issued an arrest warrant for the pair. BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — A court in Romania’s capital on Tuesday granted a request by British authorities to extradite the divisive online influencer Andrew Tate, but only after legal proceedings against him in Romania have been concluded, his spokesperson said.

The Bucharest Court of Appeal’s decision came after Tate, 37, and his brother Tristan Tate were detained on Monday evening on arrest warrants issued by British authorities over allegations of sexual aggression in a U.K. case dating back to 2012-2015.

The appeals court, where the Tate brothers appeared in handcuffs on Tuesday escorted by police, also ordered them immediately released, spokesperson Mateea Petrescu said.

Eugen Vidineac, Tate’s lawyer, hailed the court’s decision saying it “provides an opportunity for the brothers to participate fully in their defense” and for the legal process “to proceed in a transparent manner.”

Four women had reported Andrew Tate to the U.K. authorities for alleged sexual violence and physical abuse, but the Crown Prosecution Service decided not to prosecute him. The alleged victims then turned to crowdfunding to cover their legal costs as they pursue a civil case against him.

“We handed over our evidence about the horrific acts of violence we endured and waited for action. But four years later we were told the U.K. authorities would not prosecute him,” they state on their campaign page. “It’s our one remaining route to hold him accountable.”

It wasn’t immediately clear what Tristan Tate is accused of in the U.K.

Before the court’s ruling Tuesday, Petrescu said that the Tate brothers, who are dual U.K. and U.S. citizens, reject the charges and “express profound disappointment that such serious allegations are being resurrected without substantial new evidence.”

Andrew Tate is charged in a separate case in Romania with rape, human trafficking and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women. He was arrested near Bucharest in December 2022 along with his brother and two Romanian women. Romanian prosecutors formally indicted all four in June and they have denied the allegations.

McCue Jury & Partners, the legal firm representing the four British women who accuse Andrew Tate of rape and serious physical and sexual assaults, said in a statement Tuesday they had urged British police to “immediately seek a warrant” for Tate’s detention and extradition after they received information last week that he might be planning to flee Romania.

“Today’s news is very welcome as it had been a significant concern to many that Tate would seek to avoid justice in Romania and abroad,” said Matthew Jury, a managing partner at the law firm. “We are grateful to the British authorities for taking our concerns seriously and issuing an arrest warrant. Tate is accused of serious criminal offenses against a large number of victims and he must be held accountable.”

Jury said that whatever the outcome of the Romanian trial, Tate will also face prosecution in England.

He added that since Tate was arrested in Romania, he has “spread a vast amount of disinformation about the criminal charges he faces in the U.K.” in high-profile interviews with popular media figures such as Tucker Carlson and Piers Morgan.

Vidineac said after the court’s decision on Tuesday that the Tate brothers “unequivocally deny” accusations they planned to flee judicial proceedings in Romania. “We believe this rumour has originated from a popular online influencer who misconstrued a text message from our clients while streaming live,” he said. “There is simply no truth to it.”

Tate, who has amassed 8.9 million followers on X, formerly Twitter, has repeatedly claimed that prosecutors in Romania have no evidence against him and that there is a political conspiracy to silence him. He was previously banned from various prominent social media platforms for expressing misogynistic views and for hate speech.

A post on Tate’s X account on Tuesday that read, “The Matrix is afraid, but I only fear God.” He uses the term “Matrix” to refer to what he sees as a wide-ranging conspiracy targeting men.

After their arrest in Romania, the Tate brothers were held for three months in police detention before being moved to house arrest. They were later restricted to the areas of Bucharest Municipality and nearby Ilfov County. Currently, they cannot leave Romania. The legal case in Romania is still being discussed in the preliminary chamber stages, a process in which the defendants can challenge prosecutors’ evidence. No trial date has been set.

Last October, lawyers for the alleged abuse victims held a news conference in Bucharest in which they accused Andrew Tate and his followers of trying to intimidate their clients into silence .

In January, Tate won an appeal challenging the seizure of his assets by Romanian authorities, which were confiscated in the weeks after he was arrested.

Romanian authorities had seized 15 luxury cars , 14 designer watches and cash in several currencies worth an estimated 3.6 million euros ($3.9 million).

McGrath reported from Sighisoara, Romania.
