Round the Island powerboat race a spectacle of hi-octane thrills and colour

A NEW boat in its first outing — Team 25 Good Boy Vodka, driven by Rob Lockyer and Scott Younger — won the UKOPRA Round the Island Powerboat Race.

The second round of this year’s UKOPRA Offshore Championship saw 26 teams start from a line off Gurnard, in The Western Solent.

In a close-fought race, Rob and Scott beat last year's Offshore Championship winners Drew Langdon and Miles Jennings, in Silverline, by just four seconds.

The 'Big 2' crews completed the course in just under 42 minutes, at a respectable 87mph average speed.

Although the first leg to The Needles saw the leaders peak at around 120mph, thanks to the mill pond flat water, conditions changed to a moderate swell heading down to St Catherine's Lighthouse.

Class 1 had the biggest fleet of boats seen in British Powerboat Championship racing since the 1960s, with nine teams producing a combined power output of 16,000hp.

The fleet included a team from Sweden, who drove a 40ft canopied catamaran, which was forced to retire off Freshwater.

Class 2 saw the return of the 1998 Cowes Beaverbrook Trophy winner , Assagai, who took line honours in just under 55 minutes.

Some 14 teams competed in Class 3 — from historic Class E, to the smallest class, P750.

There were wins for Renegade 2, TeamworX, Mid-Life and Team Pickle across the Class 3 categories.

There was a strong local Island interest across all offshore classes, which included new teams AT Offshore Racing, Brut and KMO Racing.

It was in Class 3E which saw Isle of Wight teams fill the podium places.

Colin Gibson and Richard Jackson, in E28 Top Banana, won in 1hr 3mins, at an average speed of 56 mph, beating lovingly restored 1963 Bertram Hull of H400, Thunderstreak, which raced under the Royal Yacht Squadron flag with Hugo Peel, Adrian de Ferranti and Richard Jessel aboard.

Another classic race hull, formerly owned by Lady Arran, E8 Mango Crazy, driven by Terry Parsons and Bembridge man, Peter Hall.

The next round will be held in Lymington on Saturday, July 8.

The August bank holiday weekend will see powerboats return to The Solent for the annual Cowes Classic.

Round the Island Powerboat Race marine advisory

Several sea channels will be temporarily closed to regular marine traffic on Sunday because of the annual Round the Island Powerboat Race.

The marine entrance to Ferry Reach, in St George’s, will be closed from 11.45am to 3.30pm or until opened by the coastguard.

The passage between Hinson’s Island in Paget and the Paget shoreline, as well as the opening between Five Star Island and the Southampton mainland, will also be closed from 12.15pm to 2.45pm or until opened by the coastguard.

Mariners, pilots and boat operators are urged to exercise extreme caution when navigating the racecourse area, particularly when near Ferry Reach, Two Rock Passage and White’s Island in Hamilton Harbour.

The public is also reminded that it is an offence for any boat operator, as well as jetskis, to fail to observe the marine notice requirements.

In the event of inclement weather, the race will occur on either Sunday, August 14, or Sunday, August 21. The same marine rules and closures will apply.

The 2016 Rubis Around the Island Power Boat Race was held this afternoon [August 14] with racing getting underway at 2.00pm from Ferry Reach.

In the lead up to race-day, eighteen boats had signed up to participate and today, eighteen boats took to the start line in their respective classes, under clear skies.

Bermuda Powerboat Association Vice-Commodore Kim McCallan, who was co-pilot in D4, sustained injuries after she and her pilot were thrown from their boat into the waters near Five Star Island.

This year’s race was sponsored by Rubis, Freisenbruch-Meyer Group, PW’s, International Sports Shop and Barritt’s.

BPBA, Bermuda Police some body What happen to the buoys outside the pylons.. That is very suprising those brain surgeons pleasure boat operators, if that’s what they are didn’t get hit or cause an accident. The race boats should’ve had a bee line directly to flatts,.. Typical we are going to wait for something serious to happen before something gets done.
