Virgin Islands Entry Regulations

From covid to work permits and business licences.

With the health crisis is almost at an end , Covid regulations in the British Virgin Islands have changed. They have not disappeared, but transferred into a bureaucracy war of work permit and trade licences.

What that means is that your charter starting in USVI might not go to the BVI because the paperwork did not make it through. How can you be sure that your selected yacht has the necessary paperwork to go? That depends on your dates. Consult your preferences with us and we’ll be very direct about where your selected yacht is in terms of feasibility of a BVI charter. Note that the rules are subject to, often very unexpected, changes.

BVI charter guests on vacation are no longer required to register for entry clearance or show proof of travel insurance, regardless of their vaccination status. Also, there is no longer the need to present a COVID-19 test result upon arrival in the British Virgin Islands.

A beautiful island in the British Virgin Islands, Jost Van Dyke is a must-see for yacht charters looking to experience some of the best scuba diving in the world. The waters around the Jost Van Dyke land are flourishing with marine life- creating an incredible opportunity for snorkeling and other water sports.

Even though it is one of the smallest leeward islands in the  BVI , the yacht charters will be treated to  spectacular scenery  and authentic experiences in Jost Van Dyke. CKIM Group was fantastic, for the whole year leading up to the trip! We had nut allergies and 5 kids on the trip, with one family who wasn’t sure they would be able to make it till the week before, and they handled all of our questions and scenarios so quickly, professionally, thoroughly, and kindly. They had a great rapport with the boat owner and crew.

Chris our experience was absolutely amazing!! It was everything that we could hope for and more!!! The Wildcat Too was super clean, super well kept and the perfect size for us!! We loved that Wildcat Too had three levels for us to use contrary to most of the other charters that we saw in the area that did not have the top floor to hang in. The third floor is a must!!

Besides that what made it so special were Rob and Deb. They were amazing!!! They bought everything we had on our list (and believe me it was a lot!!!) and they went out of their way to make it extra special!! Rob knew every perfect place to take us and Deb catered to us with every specific detail you can imagine!! She cooked gourmet food every day and night and spent the whole charter taking care of every detail possible!! They make a great team!! In fact, we talked to them about doing a week charter with them next summer but in a new area like St Marteen, Anguilla, St Barts. They made our trip so special that we only want to travel with them next time!!! Please let me know if there is any website where we can rate our beautiful experience as we want everybody to know how amazing are Rob and Deb and the Wildcat Too!!! Thank you!!

I am kicking myself for not reviewing Voyage sooner. They have been my go to vacation for close to 15 years. I could end this review here, but they are the absolute best charter company and boats anywhere. I won't disparage other companies, but once you have chartered with Voyage you will question your decision to go anywhere else. Will the boats have issues, yes. If anyone says otherwise, they have never been on (or owned) a boat. The difference is Voyage will go out of their way and have it fixed faster than any of the other "big" charter companies. Absolutely amazing staff. See you again next year.

We just finished trip to the BVIs where we bare boated one of Voyage Charters' catamarans - we had the BEST vacation ever, and a perfect experience with Voyage. Our original plan was to go through Dream Yacht Charters, but they canceled on use ONE DAY BEFORE our trip was to begin due to not complying with local government safety regulations that they were given 6 months to gain compliance but failed to do so (please never rent from them!!). We were frantically calling around, and thankfully came across Voyage through a Google search. They couldn't have been more understanding or helpful. The pictures of the boat online had me a little nervous prior to seeing it (mostly because I kept comparing it to the Dream Yacht Charters boat we were planning to rent - it had a flybridge and the photos seemed a little nicer). But the group I sailed with all agreed that the boat was the perfect size, very spacious and comfortable, sailed great, and was very reliable (we only had 1 issue where the wind instrument was malfunctioning during our check-in walk through; they had a Voyage mechanic replace the part on spot and took <20 minutes to fix). Thank you so much to Claire and team for providing us with such a great experience. Voyage will hands down be our first choice when we next return to the BVIs!!! :) Oh and do yourself a favor, and make sure to rent bean bags for your sail - they made for great additional lounge spots!

We just finished our bareboat charter on Voyage's 590e Miles Away, and had an AMAZING time. Our charter agent Danyielle was very helpful and in conjunction with our concierge Francoise and other staff members, we were well prepared and easily navigated thru the few issues we did encounter.Coordinating extra water toys, dive info and provisioning was smooth and the only challenge was not knowing what Restaurants were or weren't open, as the season was just getting going. Voyage is a family owned business and they are super customer centric! They made sure every detail was covered and every need met. 10+ out of 10 for the boat, staff, and of course the BVI!.

My wife says she can't go back to the smaller boats again. The ability to have A/C 24/7 was wonderful and to have A/C while making water was worry free. I really appreciated the holding tanks working and not dumping sewage in an anchorage where you are swimming. We never felt crowded on the boat with 12 people. Sailing was great with so many comfortable places to sit and enjoy the sail. I highly recommend 590.

We did not have to change our day at all. Mainitenance jumped onboard with all items needed to fix the issue. On the boat and off in 15 minutes or less. Awesome group. We will definitely be back. No need to look anywhere else for a different charter company. This company has excellent vessels and proved to us that they can support them very very well!!

Virgin Gorda

From your start on Tortola from our Maya Cove base, sail across to The Baths  on Virgin Gorda to explore its unique geological formations of volcanic granite boulders, some more than 40 feet in diameter. You can trek through this protected park’s unique caverns as shown in the video at right to be rewarded with enjoyment of a picturesque beach that often shows up on top ten lists of the best beaches in the world.

Then a quick sail Virgin Gorda Sound for the evening. Enjoy the  Leverick Bay Restaurant  and a more casual atmosphere at Jumbie’s Beach Bar until 9:00 p.m.

Saba Rock is worth a dinghy landing to explore the tiny island or watch kite-surfers…or take a go at it yourself. You are sure to find a place to perch with a Painkiller and to feed the tarpon.

Further up Virgin Gorda, there are the standard Bitter End restaurants, but you may want to pass them by and try Sugarcane ‘s happy hour for a sundowner about 4:30 p.m.

Then sail downwind across the top of Tortola toward Cane Garden Bay. There are several possible stops:

• Scrub Island  has lots of new development to enjoy.
• Pusser’s Marina Cay  has something for everyone in the family from snorkeling to relaxing to sampling delicious rum cake (and tropical drinks).
• Trellis Bay offers a few beach Roti type restaurants, and if your timing is right, you might catch a Full Moon Party.

As you continue across the top of Tortola, you’ll pass by incomparable White Bay on the private resort,  Guana Island , note that visiting the beach is reserved exclusively for resort guests, but you will enjoy the view.  Stop at Monkey Point, one of the top 5 snorkeling spots in the BVI for enjoying arrays of colorful fish and interesting creatures such as squid called cuttlefish.

Upon arrival in Cane Garden Bay , you will enjoy fine seafood and Caribbean cuisine while dining in the gazebo at Myett’s .

Jost Van Dyke

On Jost, drink and dine your way through with these suggestions:

• Start in White Bay with Soggy Dollar Bar .
• Don’t miss Hendo’s Hideout , the bar to the right of Soggy on the other side of the thatch fence.
• Then around Dog Hole Point in Great Harbor, hit the next world famous BVI hangout, Foxy’s Tamarind Bar .
• Another limin’ place is Corsairs right down the block from Foxy’s.

As you get back to Tortola, continuing counterclockwise back into Drake’s Channel and round the West End, try Pusser’s Landing in Sopers Hole for a Painkiller and dining. You’ll find easy moorings and plenty of dock space, even for a catamaran.

Sailing south to Norman Island stop in Pirates Bight  where there is a full-service dive shop as well as plenty of cocktail and dining opportunities. A new restaurant in the area Norman Island is The Club  that offers Mediterranean and Jamaican cuisine with an amazing tropical drink menu.

And, of course, no trip to Norman Island is complete without a stop at Willy-T .

Finish at Cooper Island. It has several restaurants and even a coffee lounge . Get there before the crowd, both for the moorings and the dinner tables.

An early morning departure will put you back at your charter base at Maya Cove just in time for the gas docks to open if you are bareboating.

Perhaps you’ve noted that these BVI suggestions will take more than a week. So our final suggestion is to either extend your stay or plan on a return visit soon!

Most BVI charters start in Tortola. Nevertheless, it’s possible to start a crewed charter in Saint Thomas in the US Virgin Island. Not all yachts are able to start the charter in the USVI. You’ll either want a yacht that is based in the USVI or we can arrange a St. Thomas pickup (with many yachts).

Types of charter

There are two primary ways to break down the BVI yacht charters: crew and power.

• By the primary type of power used to move the boat around: Sailboat Motor yacht
• The secondary sorting is by crew that is available on the chartered yacht. Crewed Yacht Captain Only

Crewed charter

The crewed charter usually includes at least a captain and a chef. The boat is provisioned according to guest wishes and preferences. Since all the work is handled by the crew (captain handles the boat and the chef handles the food, and often more (diving, watersports)), the guests can really have a relaxed, laid back time.

Captain only charter

Captain only charters are a good middle ground between the crewed charters and the bareboat charters. It’s very much like car rental. You do the paperwork and rent the boat. Local experience of the crew should not be underestimated. A captain will know secret spots and is able to quickly analyze your preferences and types of vacation you wish (or need).

Common Issues On a BVI Yacht Charters

Bareboat charter

Bareboat charter is the budget friendly option for qualified sailors. Originally intended for people who know the area, the price convenience caused that today, many of the bareboat captains would be better off with a captain only charter. If you haven’t been to the BVI before or you haven’t that much experience sailing the boat you wish to charter (rent), consider a captain only charter, you will thank us later:) At the moment, we don’t include bareboats in our search, please inquire directly and we can find a matching bareboat for you.

North Sound

If the BVI is the mecca of yachting, the North Sound should be it’s capital. Pristine bays, sandy beaches where you are often alone.

North Sound is located on the north of Virgin Gorda, the primary methods of transport there is by boat. It’s a rather secluded location, no doubt by design.

This Billionaire Playground has been started in the 50’s and 60’s by the Washburn family, picking up momentum throughout the 70’s and 80’s. Notably, Sir Richard Branson purchased his second island, Moskito Island, in a prominent location in the North Sound.

The activities – let’s start with sailing – North Sound being the ultimate sailing destination and hosting the annual Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta and Randevouz.

Apart from the main factor, you can see people windsurfing and kiting. Some of the most beautiful BVI diving locations are located here, namely the beautiful Mountain Point, Cow’s Mouth and Paul’s Grotto near Mountain Bay.

One of the main islands is very well known for yacht anchorages. On Jost Van Dyke will find amazing bars, restaurants with the pure Caribbean vibe. Once you come on your yacht charter to White Bay you will not want to leave ever. In the White Bay, the time stopped and you will have so much fun on your charter. Cold famous painkillers with delicious local food, you have to try this little nature secret in this paradise.

Norman Island is known as Treasure Island and was the inspiration for the pirate novel of Robert Louis Stevenson. Bareboat Fleet and Rates

The 2017 model  Bavaria 34 charter yacht ‘Maverick’ , designed by Farr Yacht design, is a capable family cruiser available from Horizon in the  British Virgin Islands .

Built in Germany to a high standard, the 34 has a roller furling main and genoa, with all control lines easy to hand in the cockpit. The genoa winches have been moved aft, so the genoa can be trimmed easily by the helm or crew. You can be under full sail in just a few minutes. As the 34 carries her beam well aft, she benefits from twin wheels – great for helming visibility, with the added bonus of giving direct access to the transom swim platform, without any clambering around a single wheel. Fountaine Pajot launched the Lucia 40 on the boatyard’s 40th anniversary—a nice birthday present to itself as well as to sailors seeking a manageable cruising cat perfect for cruising the BVI.

The design team of Berret-Racoupeau was tasked with bringing big-boat allure to a smaller footprint, and the result is a sleek cruiser that has plenty of beam and deck space without looking boxy or awkwardly tall. The hulls have a fine entry for better performance, the fixed keels eliminate the need for daggerboards and the coachroof angles down as it swoops forward, adding shade over the windows. The Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40 is actually bigger than the Lipari 41 she replaced, featuring a more spacious cockpit, more interior volume and more oversized windows all around.

Boarding via the aft transom platforms is made easier with well-placed handholds. From here, it’s only one step up to the cockpit, which as mentioned, is very spacious. In fact, it is almost the size of the cockpit of the popular Helia 44. The portside L-shaped dinette can accommodate up to eight, and there is additional seating along the transom and on the starboard side. The entire cockpit is protected by a composite bimini, which also serves as the base for the large mainsheet traveller, keeping the running rigging out of the cockpit.

Nauti Dog has an elevated helm position with seating for two, with excellent visibility of the sail plan and for manoeuvering. Her twin 30 HP engines make her a breeze to pick up a mooring or to come alongside. An electric winch hoists her fully battened mainsail, and a furling jib is set in a matter of seconds. The mainsail stack pack, also known as a lazy bag, makes dropping and flaking the sail extremely easy. The Lucia 40 is responsive to sail, easy to tack, and can be handled easily by two sailors. With a full suite of electronics, including two chart plotters and an autopilot, she is a joy to cruise aboard. Stored on her davits is a 10ft Rigid Inflatable Dinghy with a 15hp Yamaha outboard. Quickly launched and retrieved, the dinghy will get on the plane with 2 or 3 aboard and carry up to 6 persons comfortably to your favourite snorkel spots.

The well-appointed saloon is accessed via a large sliding double door. The galley has a gas oven and a capacious 130-litre fridge.

This Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40 is the owner’s version – the three-cabin “Maestro” with three electric heads and showers. A generator can run air conditioning throughout the yacht, although with hatch breeze boosters aboard, most of the year in the BVI you can relax in the comfort of the tradewinds. The entire starboard hull is dedicated to a master suite, with an en-suite head and shower. The walk-around island Queen double aft is easy to get into, and there is a desk amidships if you need some space to work “off the grid”. The Nautitech 44 Open is the latest design in the Nautitech lineup to get really excited about!

This new design builds on the successful Nautitech ‘Open’ concept and so delivers a ‘wide grin’ sailing performance. The 44 Open is probably the fastest cruising catamaran available for a bareboat charter. She can point higher than any other cruising cat (that does not have daggerboards -which consume interior space), thanks to her high aspect sail plan, tight sheeting angles, high aspect rudders, a draft of 4ft 9“and an excellent sail area to displacement ratio. The Open 44 remains stable, comfortable, and downright fun to sail on and off the wind.

Optimized cruising speeds are a result of the low wetted surface area enabled by narrow, hydrodynamic hulls below the waterline. While the hard-chined stepped hulls above the waterline give more interior living space.

You have an unobstructed view of the sails and the sea thanks to the double aft helm station positions; you can communicate and enjoy the sailing with all the crew members in the cockpit.

In a change from the design of the Open 40, the lower mainsheet track positioning is easy to adjust and see for perfect sail trim from the helm station. A low boom above the coach roof allows for extra efficiency from the mainsail, more sail area and easy access to the sail bag. The high aspect furling, and self-tacking jib, with all control lines led aft to electric winches for both sails, means the 44 Open is a breeze to sail short-handed.

There is rich joinery in the interior of the 44 Open which gives a warm and modern ambience aboard. The cockpit flows seamlessly into the saloon (the ethos of the Open concept) giving you the ideal indoor/outdoor living space for a yacht in the tropics. The galley conjoins the saloon and cockpit, so matter where the crew are, the chef is part of the socialising. The interior saloon area is cosy and offers a modular seating arrangement with cushioned cubes that can be moved around into a day bed, a footrest, or stools. 

With the almost 360-degree view from the entrance of the saloon, you can happily escape (rare!) inclement weather or socialize at the cockpit table whilst still keeping an eye on your surroundings.

Thanks to a double-drawer fridge, cockpit fridge and freezer unit, there is excellent fridge capacity aboard.
