The Fleming 55 is a well-proven raised pilothouse motoryacht designed for serious cruising. Her semi-displacement hull gives her great flexibility in performance. The Fleming 55 has a range of 2,000 nautical miles at 8 knots yet, with her standard Twin Cummins QSC 500 hp common rail engines, she can attain a top speed of approximately 18 knots. Maximum sustained cruising speed is around 17 knots where her moderate deadrise provides a very comfortable ride. On longer passages, Fleming owners typically cruise at a very economical speed of 10 knots, where the typical fuel burn is slightly more than 10 gph.

The Fleming's deep keel provides protection for the running gear and stability in following seas. Because noise and vibration contribute to fatigue, Fleming has paid special attention to producing a yacht which has become the standard in the industry for its whisper quiet, ultra smooth ride. Fundamental to this achievement is the use of Aquadrive anti-vibration drive systems.

The Fleming 55 was first introduced in 1986, and since that time it has benefited from a rigorous program of evolution. There have been literally hundreds of improvements made, both big and small. While its legendary hull design remains essentially the same, today's Fleming 55 is a thoroughly modern yacht utilizing advanced technology, materials and construction methods. In 2019 construction of hull number 250 is well underway, making it one of the most successful production yachts in history.

Overview Continued...

Foredeck and Forepeak

Special attention has been paid to the ability to set and retrieve heavy ground tackle on the Fleming 55. The fiberglass anchor platform is equipped with twin Maxwell RC12 vertical windlasses with capstans for both rope and 3/8" (10mm) Grade-60 stainless steel chain. The windlass has a plug-in remote control as well as controls in the pilothouse and on the flybridge. Double sets of grooved rollers make it possible to self-launch and stow two 77 lb (35 Kg) Ultra anchors. Hose bibs for salt and fresh water are located next to the anchor platform, and there are deck lockers to port and stbd.

A lock-down hatch on the foredeck provides convenient access to the forepeak, which is separated from the rest of the yacht by a collision bulkhead. It has an area for storage of chain and a separate ventilated rope locker. Each features a bitter end fitting. The forepeak drains directly overboard and can be hosed down without concerns that water will contaminate the bilges.

The flared bow turns aside green water and provides a forward deck of unusually generous proportions. The oval stainless steel handrail has been brought inboard of the sloping bulwarks for convenience and security. To prevent streaking of the hull, the deck scuppers are piped down to the boot stripe, rather than being allowed to drain directly overboard.

Further protection against heavy weather is provided by the design of the Portuguese bridge. There is comfortable seating on its forward side, which is also the location for the forward shorepower inlet. There is ample storage for fenders and lines inside ventilated lockers accessed from the aft side of the Portuguese Bridge, and double doors close off the forward deck areas from the side and bridge decks creating a safe area for small children. There are sturdy, stainless steel handrails around the forward face of the pilothouse and down both side decks.

Easy stairs with handrails designed for both adults and children lead down to the wide and well-protected side-decks, which run down both sides of the boat. Here you will find cleats and chocks for forward and aft spring lines. The inward-opening bulwark doors make for easy and safe boarding.

Aft Deck and Swim Platform

With an area of approximately 250 sq ft. the Fleming 55 aft deck is unusually large. Being all at one level, it becomes an extension of the salon and provides ample space for chairs, donning scuba gear, or fishing. The fiberglass skirt around the edge of the wide teak cap rail conceals mood lighting and hides the engine-room air intakes which are well-protected from salt-laden spray.

Shower fittings for hot and cold water, located next to the inward-opening transom door, are conveniently placed for use while standing on the swim platform. Stainless steel handrails on the transom and a swim ladder, which can be deployed by a person in the water, provide safety and convenience.

Access to the upper boat deck is via a stainless steel ladder and a sliding hatch in the overhead. Access into the lazarette is through lockable hatches, with safe and stylish curved corners. Available as options are a console for cockpit engine controls and a locker, which can be equipped with a basin and faucet, insulated chest or icemaker.

Flying Bridge

The Fleming 55 low-profile flying bridge is spacious and packed with practical amenities. Its double helmseat, with folding stainless steel footrest, folds forward to access storage beneath it. The control console has full engine instrumentation and ample room for electronics. Access to and from the pilothouse is by a protected internal companionway directly from the pilothouse, avoiding the need to navigate perilous steps or ladders where a slip could result in a fall over the side. A wrap-around venturi windshield with stainless steel handrail provides protection from wind and weather.

There is seating for eight guests close to, but out of the way of, the helm station. A fiberglass table is standard and an ingenious pass-thru "dumbwaiter" eliminates the need to carry refreshments up from the galley. Aft of the seating area is the separate boat deck for the tender and a fully hydraulic davit, with remote control. From here, a ladder provides direct access to the lower aft deck.

A popular option is the aft facing boat deck control station that provides the captain with excellent visibility aft. Complete with bow thruster, and engine controls, backing into a tight slip is easier than ever.

The radar arch provides ample room for the full range of antennae required by modern electronic equipment, and an optional fibreglass hardtop is a popular choice.

Main Salon and Galley

The salon in the Fleming 55 features a comfortable L-settee with cushions upholstered over wood frames instead of the usual foam cushions on plywood. The sole is hand-laid teak and holly strips, and all built-in furniture is of superior quality joinerwork with rounded corners. There is a hi-lo table of unique design making it suitable for dining and as a coffee table. To starboard is a cabinet with powered TV lift and space for entertainment system components. To port is a bar with icemaker. The salon opens directly onto the aft deck through double sliding doors.

The galley is conveniently located on the same level as the salon and is properly designed to be used while underway. Either Corian or granite counter tops can be ordered. There are ample storage lockers and drawers, and appliances include a 21 cu. ft. side-by-side fridge/freezer with teak-panel doors and chilled water & ice dispenser; Miele induction cooktop with practical custom stainless steel pot-holders; convection microwave; and an undermount double stainless steel sink with waste disposer. Space has been provided for an optional dishwasher. A 20-gallon water heater is conveniently located close to the sinks for instant hot water. A pass-through dumbwaiter makes it safe and easy to serve food and drinks to guests on the flying bridge.

Fleming's signature low-profile design is evident even in the interior, as just a few steps lead up to pilothouse and down to the accommodations.

Accommodations

The perfect close to a day of cruising is to retire to a comfortable cabin. The Fleming 55 offers easy access to all the accommodations via a central passageway. A separate washer and drier are conveniently located behind a sliding door in this passage.

The master cabin is forward for maximum light and ventilation. It features a tapered queen berth with headboard. The bed lifts at the press of a button to access storage for bulky items. The bed also slides aft to make it easier to make the bed. There are two hanging lockers with shelves, teak louvered doors and space for a TV.

The master cabin has an en suite head with Corian, marble or granite countertops and a molded fiberglass shower stall. Hans-Grohe faucets are used throughout and feature a thermostatically controlled shower.

The port guest cabin is offered with either two single or one double bed with headboards. An additional slide-out upper berth with either layout is optional. The aft bulkhead has generous bookshelves. The starboard guest cabin has one lower and one upper, slide-out, upper berth. This cabin can also be offered as an optional office with desk, lockers, bookshelves and space for a computer & printer.

The guest head features a one-piece fiberglass molding and shower stall with bi-fold stainless steel doors. The attractive ceramic basin is set in a Corian, marble or granite countertop. Faucets are Hans-Grohe with a thermostatically controlled shower.

Throughout the yacht all lighting is LED type with polished stainless steel fittings. Teak and holly soles are standard in all interior areas.

Engine Room

The Fleming 55 engine room is meticulously well thought out and provides easy accessibility to every piece of equipment.

A signature feature of the Fleming 55 is its quietness and freedom from vibration. Much of the credit for this lies with the Aquadrive system, which isolates the engine and transmission from the propeller thrust, permitting the use of much softer engine mounts. Aquadrive is fitted as standard on every Fleming 55 and their rotating couplings are concealed beneath fiberglass covers for safety.

Another reason for the quietness of the Fleming is the careful attention paid to sound insulation. Lead/foam insulation is used extensively throughout and all hatches are dogged down on rubber gaskets. There are even double hatches separated by an air space over each engine.

Fuel tanks are made of fiberglass with integrally molded sumps to allow maximum useage of fuel. Vinylester resin is used in their construction on the interior and fire-retardant resin in the outer layers. The fuel system has been designed to make the transfer of fuel foolproof. It is impossible to inadvertently overfill one tank by incorrectly switching a fuel return valve.

Access to the engine room is via two hatches in the salon sole and from the lazarette through a uniquely shaped oval door designed for easy access. Engine room intake air enters from the lazarette to ensure it is free of salt before reaching the engines and generators.

For safety and convenience each Cummins QSC 500HP engine has a start and a stop button located in the engine room, and a PTO (power take-off) on the gearbox provides hydraulic power for the stabilizers which are standard equipment on all Flemings.

Inside the large lazarette are four polyethylene water tanks totaling 300 gallons (1,135 liters), battery master switches, and a 3,500 watt inverter. Four air conditioning compressors provide heating and cooling for the entire yacht. Against the transom is the steering system with its connection point for the autopilot. The tops for the rudder stocks terminate above the waterline. Despite all this equipment there remains 95 cu. ft. of storage for fenders and other cruising gear. Access to the engine room is through the oval-shaped door.

In many modern designs it has become fashionable to eliminate the inside steering station, but the Fleming 55 features a pilothouse which closely resembles the bridge of a much larger vessel. We created a dedicated place from which the boat is piloted and controlled without any distractions from other on-board activities but which is still only three steps from the salon and galley. Four interior steps safely lead to the upper flying bridge station.

Specially designed removable consoles provide ample room for a full range of modern electronic equipment without intruding on the engine instrumentation. Overhead consoles provide additional space. There is also a proper chart area with drawers and a chart light. Electrical panels swing out to provide easy access to wiring connections and the inside of the flying bridge console is accessed through a swing-out bookcase. The watch-keeper has their own Stidd helm seat and an adjacent, raised L-shaped settee and table provide a comfortable social area with excellent visibility through the side and forward windows.

This is truly the nerve center of the boat where all the systems and crew come together in complete harmony.

MANAGEMENT & ENVIRONMENT

Fleming Yachts Construction (HK) Ltd management and environmental systems have met and been approved by ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management Systems and ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Standards.

The question most manufacturers ask themselves when considering a new feature is whether it is necessary to include it in order to sell the boat. In the case of the Fleming, we ask only whether its inclusion will make the boat safer, better or more convenient. That is why we have introduced literally hundreds of refinements since we started construction in 1985 and why we continue the process today.

For that reason, Fleming Yachts reserves the right to make changes to specifications and equipment without notice.

She includes important innovations, such as the mainsail arch, mast position, balanced sail plan, 45° companionway, and electric swim platform, which all go to make this cruiser easy to handle. Equipped with the Incidence D4 Performance Pack, she is capable of performances second to none.

Interior design

Pioneering, the Oceanis 55 has opted for an outstanding level of interior comfort. With lots of glazed openings, a fully glazed shower for the owner cabin in terms of interior design, she has a wonderfully serene atmosphere.  Her galley is very well equipped and very spacious, her interior can be adapted to multiple layouts, and there is scope for personalizing her ambiance by choosing very different woodwork and linings to create a refined and welcoming atmosphere.

55 ft sailing yacht

Bright and a joy to live on

In the cockpit, at anchor, on deck or inside, the Oceanis 55 offers generous well-ventilated spaces. With rectangular portholes offering a view of the horizon, there is plenty to see and lots of light in all circumstances.

55 ft sailing yacht

Sunbathing areas

Combined with the cockpit’s L-shaped seats, the two sun-loungers on the roof cleverly provide extra places to relax outside. At anchor, the huge aft platform lowers to provide a terrace at sea level.

Her hull stands out for its bold taut lines and its colour can be personalized over and over again, making her an unprecedentedly stylish cruiser.

Winches at the helm station

The unique design centres all the winches at the helm station so that all manoeuvres can be carried out alone. This is very reassuring on a 55 foot sailing yacht.

Skipper cabin

The fourteen berth version features a double fore cabin for the skipper, meaning that any crew configuration can be envisaged.

Best Full-Size Cruiser, 50 to 55 feet: Beneteau Sense 50

  • By Bill Springer
  • Updated: December 9, 2010

55 ft sailing yacht

Beneteau Sense 50 BOTY Winner

When they debated about the boats in the category of Best Full-Size Cruiser, 50 to 59 Feet, the judges kept coming back to the boat that attracted so much buzz at the show, but for reasons that were much more substantial than merely crowd appeal. In introducing the Sense 50, Beneteau took a bold step away from its First and Oceanis lines to create a sailboat packed with innovative technology and fresh ideas that together form a cohesive whole. The 50 illustrates that good things can happen when designers and builders think outside the box.

It was apparent to the judges as soon as they stepped aboard that no other monohull in this year’s fleet was even remotely similar to this new concept from Beneteau. They liked the wide cockpit that sits low in the hull, enabling the sensation of speed they enjoyed at the wheel while under sail. And the cockpit’s wide open stern—made even more so by helm seats that hinge up and out of the way—would be a great place to hang out at anchor.

The judges found that the smooth transition through the large companionway into the main saloon worked well. They loved the sense of space in the galley and saloon.        As the judges moved forward through the interior, they saw the boat’s two cabins with en suite heads as perfect for a couple and guests, and they quickly warmed to the idea that the boat has an “office” cabin.

Sealing the decision, the judges agreed that Beneteau’s optional Dock & Go system, which features joystick control of the boat’s rotating saildrive and bow thruster, provides pinpoint close-quarters control that could revolutionize maneuvering when the space gets tight.

Winning Details

  • The Dock & Go system worked well and provided all the control under power that the builder promised.
  • The Sense has nearly the interior space of a catamaran and the sailing performance of a monohull.
  • The transition between the cockpit and the interior is excellent.

This luxury yacht blends the iconic look of the 1931 Wheeler Playmate with modern technology and unrivaled craftsmanship. Experience inspired luxury while cruising the open seas.

A Modern Take On a Beloved Classic

The Wheeler family is building yachts again, and we found our latest inspiration for the new Wheeler 55 in the 1931 Wheeler catalog.

Wheeler was among the iconic custom boat builders of the 1930s – including Herreshoff, Trumpy, Elco and Matthews – who defined the classic look of the era and helped to transform the industry for decades to come.

In the 1930s, Wheeler’s custom-built, all-wood luxury yachts had displacement hulls and gasoline engines and were capable of just 13-15 miles per hour. Only the finest materials and premium equipment available at the time were used: Philippine mahogany interiors, Burmese teak cockpits, Sterling marine engines, monel tanks, oak frames and keels.

These high-end details and American craftsmanship earned Wheeler Yachts a reputation for being the best.

We are proud to continue our tradition of quality with our next generation of yachts. The new Wheeler 55 captures the nostalgia of this great period in shipbuilding history and couples it with today’s modern technologies and comforts.

The Original 50-56′ Playmates

Built in the early 1930s, the original 50- to 56-foot Playmates were artfully constructed for superior seaworthiness and luxury. Wheeler meticulously incorporated the finest materials available, including mahogany cabin, trim and hulls; white oak ribs and frames; and all-bronze fasteners.

With its sleek design features and unrivaled speed, this vessel helped solidify Wheeler’s yacht-making legacy.

The 56-foot Playmate of 1931 was the inspiration for the Wheeler Family to reimagine the new 55-foot model. It was the ultimate luxury vessel for living abroad with two large state rooms, lounge, salon, gallery, promenade deck, and sleeping capacity for six. It was powered with twin Sterling 150 HP gasoline engines with reduction gear and would cruise at 14 to 16 miles per hour.

The Viking 55 Convertible
For more than five decades, the Viking Yacht Company has introduced numerous ground breaking designs that have paved the waterfront with excellence in design and performance.

Like many Vikings, the 55 is a blue-water overachiever, which says a lot about any new model. But in this case, it means even more because of the big boat shoes it has been designed to fill.

In 1996, Viking introduced its first 55 Convertible at the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show. This model broke new ground with style and out gunned the competition not only with its performance but with its movie star popularity that trampled the competition in sales. Over the next five years, Viking would build over 150 55 Convertibles. No other boat by any manufacturer in this size range would even come close.

Over the next five years, Viking would build over 150 55 Convertibles. No other boat by any manufacturer in this size range would even come close.

Until Now.

This new marauder of the seas is none other than the newest edition 55 Convertible. From bow to stern and every foot in between, this boat gleams with poise and perfection. It shares so many features of its stable mates that it is the obvious heir apparent to the Viking throne for superiority of the seas.

Performance wise, the 55 Convertible eagerly rushes to top speeds in excess of 40 knots. Like to fish offshore, but sleep late? This ride is for you.

The cockpit and flying bridge have been designed around the experiences of a thousand fishing tournaments, but you don’t have to be a hard core blue water angler to appreciate the built in conveniences and amenities like a center console helm station, or observation mezzanine in the split level cockpit.

Accommodations include an inviting layout with three staterooms and two heads, a laundry center and a choice of salon floor plans featuring an island or peninsula style galley with under counter refrigeration. You can choose high gloss or satin finished teak joinery, along with a multitude of interior furnishings to customize it to your specific needs and wants.

But to really appreciate what this new model can do, we invite you to contact your Viking dealer and arrange a sea trial. We will then talk more when you get back to the dock. We will just assume that smile is your game face.

Large, well-equipped production cruising yachts of this size can cross oceans in relative comfort and speed, but you'll need deep pockets to operate and maintain them.

Not only will their systems be powerful, complex and power-hungry but they'll need equally powerful and complex charging regimes to keep everything up and running. Regular maintenance and upkeep will be even more essential than it is on smaller vessels.

“This is a statement boat – and there’s nothing like it,” says Viking Yachts President and CEO Pat Healey. “We’re setting a new standard by bringing together the qualities of a large center console and a luxury sportfishing yacht.”

Valhalla Boatworks (VBW), owned and operated by Viking Yachts, burst onto the scene in 2019 with the premiere of the first three V Series center consoles – the V-33, V-37 and V-41. The Valhalla 46 followed 18 months later, solidifying VBW as the top choice for high-performance premium center consoles from 33 to 46 feet. And now Valhalla is pushing the envelope once again, conquering new ground in the Viking tradition with the revolutionary V-55.

Pat announced the new Valhalla flagship February 4, 2022, at the Viking Yachts and Valhalla Boatworks VIP Boat Show at the Viking Yacht Service Center. The news spread like wildfire, with all major marine media outlets reporting on the V-55, its long list of attributes and qualities and the excitement the Valhalla brand has once again brought to the marine industry. Hull No. 1 made its world premiere at the 2023Miami International Boat Show.

With orders already exceeding 50 boats, the newest Valhalla has quickly staked its claim in a market segment that consumers cannot get enough of. The V-55 sets a new standard of excellence for center consoles over 50 feet with an unbeatable combination of engineering achievement, unique design traits and build specifications and next-level equipment and accessories.

The V-55 combines the speed, maneuverability, 360-degree on-deck access and convenience of an outboard-powered center console with the engineering, accommodations and amenities of a Viking convertible. The V-55’s overall size – particularly its 15-foot 6-inch beam – allows for more fuel capacity, cockpit space, on-deck seating and interior living accommodations than any other center console in its class.

“We’re providing all the strengths of our Valhalla design – everything from the style and aesthetics to the ride quality and fishability – in a center console large enough to accommodate a private stateroom, head with separate shower and overnighting space for additional crew,” says Viking Design Manager David Wilson. “We wanted to give our owners the ability to spend more time on board with family and friends – to go farther, stay longer and bring along more guests.”

Performance and Quality
The V-55 will thrive in a variety of roles, from offshore tournament contender, fish-and-cruise family center console to high-speed sport yacht. Our new flagship was designed and built specifically for Mercury’s innovative V-12 600-hp outboards (four or five engines). The quads push the V-55 (with a gap tower) to a top speed of 64 mph, and 68 mph with a hardtop and no tower. With quints, the boat (with hardtop and no tower) hits 73-74 mph at WOT. And with a 1,200-gallon fuel capacity – about 200 to 300 gallons more than competing models – the Valhalla 55 delivers greater range than other center consoles in its size range. The boat is also engineered with an electrically operated fuel management system, providing increased reliability and utility by allowing each engine to draw from designated fuel tanks.

The Valhalla 55 rides on the patented Stepped-V Ventilated Tunnel (SVVT) from Michael Peters Yacht Design. “We’ve seen great performance with the other V Series models in all aspects – from excellent ride quality and efficiency to maneuverability and helm visibility,” David says of the double-stepped, deep-V running surface. “The V-55 is the largest center console on the market to utilize what we believe is the most advanced and effective stepped-hull design currently available.”

The V-55's ride is so smooth, stable and dry – even in rough conditions – its speed is deceptive. “People have been amazed,” says Viking’s Ryan Higgins, who has conducted more than 30 sea trials with owners. “It may feel like you’re going 35 mph, but you’re actually running well over 50 mph. They don’t believe it until they look at the GPS.”

Like a Viking sportfisher, the hull is being manufactured with fiberglass and carbon fiber/E-glass hybrid fabrics for optimal strength and weight savings. The structural stringer grid, deck, liners and hardtop are resin-infused. The stringer grid has been engineered for the installation of a gyro stabilizer and is accessible through a watertight cockpit sole hatch. “We incorporated the space and the structure for a Seakeeper 9,” says Lonni. “A smaller gyro would be sufficient, but we wanted to offer maximum comfort for our customers.” Valhalla 55 owners also have the option of adding the ElectroSea CLEARLINE cleaning technology for the boat's seawater-cooled plumbing systems.

The V Series has been recognized for its meticulous fit and finish, and the workmanship on the V-55 is equally impressive. All hatches have deep drain channels and gaskets that fit into molded channels to keep them in place and functioning as designed. Doors and lids are gelcoat-finished on both sides using Light Resin Transfer Molding. All insulated boxes include lids that are also insulated for maximum cold retention. The V-55 utilizes premium hardware from Gemlux throughout the boat.

Beam Matters
At 15 feet, 6 inches, the V-55 has more beam than any other center console from 50 to 60 feet. That width brings a host of advantages on deck and in the cabin. Dual 65-gallon live wells anchor an immense cockpit, comparable to a convertible’s business end. Flip-down transom seats can be integrated into the cockpit corners. Port and starboard standard dive doors give you the flexibility to dock the Valhalla on either side. The doors provide anglers an easy way to bring a fish aboard or keep it in the water for release; each door also has a recessed bracket for a stainless steel dive ladder.

The twin insulated 110-gallon fish boxes – which can be refrigerated – flank the centerline Seakeeper hatch and the lazarette – both finished with a white gelcoat for better visibility and maintenance. Fuel filters; bilge pumps and switches, live well and fish box pumps; live well manifolds; the Hooker Sea Chest System; Reverso automatic outboard freshwater flush system and other components are expertly installed, neatly labeled and readily accessible in the lazarette.

The forward seating module is home to four Release Marine chairs (with electric slides for adjustment) and a fold-down step for the captain, if needed. The helm layout is clean, straightforward and operator-friendly with excellent visibility in all directions. A ProCurve solid glass enclosure with custom fiberglass frame provides weather protection and a gin-clear view ahead. A recessed black acrylic dash is home to three large multi-function displays, with a row of Bocatech switches beneath. The Edson steering wheel is mounted on a custom faux teak or solid teak helm pod, with the engine controls and standard Mercury joystick to starboard. The V-55 also comes standard with the Zipwake Dynamic Trim-Control System.

Seating Versatility
The V-55 is offered with two different second-row seating layouts for maximum cruise-and-fish versatility. The standard configuration may cater toward the cruising crowd, with a U-shaped lounge (with a power-actuated hi-lo dinette table that coverts to a two-person berth) serving as a social hub.

Alternatively, fish-focused owners may prefer the optional second row seating module with five Release Marine teak chairs and its additional tackle storage and cooler space. With each arrangement, the second row’s fiberglass seating module includes an aft-facing mezzanine seat with refrigeration underneath, a row of rod and cupholders, tackle storage, a drink box to port and a sink to starboard with the availability of an optional grill. Also available with the five-chair module is an optional 24-inch multi-function display, located on centerline that lifts up and faces the cockpit.

Wide sidedecks lead to the bow. A lounge (with armrests and cupholders) is integrated into the console and comfortably seats three guests. There’s an additional seat on the forward end that can hold an available live well. A pair of forward seats with optional teak backrests are to port and starboard, allowing a clear path to the 186-gallon in-deck fishbox, centerline step-up casting platform and access to the anchor locker, windlass and ground tackle.

The optional power-actuated twin bow tables are perfect for lunch or drinks, and can be lowered to create one large sunpad. “In this area, we’ve added a versatile cruising amenity while still providing accessibility forward,” says David. “The split design allows egress to the step-up platform, anchor locker and bow cleats without having to remove the tables.”

The V-55 benefits from Viking’s vertical integration, including the ability to outfit her with a custom Palm Beach Towers (a Viking company) gap tower. The hardtop package comes with a slew of fishing and navigational features and equipment, including an integrated electric teaser reel box; a six-rod rocket launcher; and molded-in pods for spreader lights, overhead electronics and radar antenna. VBW offers factory-installed electronics packages from Garmin or Simrad; custom installations of navigation, communication and entertainment systems from the Viking subsidiary Atlantic Marine Electronics – another example of vertical integration at work – are also available to owners.

An array of color choices and options allows owners to personalize their V-55; popular options include faux teak for the transom and toe rail and custom outboard and antenna colors to match the hull. Color compatibility can be taken to an even higher level with custom outboard paint packages and gelcoat options for the deck liner, console, seating modules and deck boxes.

Comforts of Home
A companionway leads to the air-conditioned cabin. Its location – on the console’s starboard aft end – and its sliding door are similar to a Viking express yacht, providing easy access and the ability to run safely with the door open or closed.

The V-55’s accommodations below expand the use of wood and amenities, bringing an enhanced level of yacht-like luxury akin to a Viking interior. A Bomar overhead hatch and two portlights on each side of the cabin usher in an abundance of natural light, heightening the appeal of the horizontal grain walnut.

The cabin has ample headroom and is appointed with a feature-rich galley to starboard and an L-shaped lounge on the port side with a drop-down dinette table for conversion into a bunk. A standard 32-inch HD TV faces the dinette. The forward area is dedicated to the private stateroom with its raised walk-around queen bed (with storage underneath); 24-inch HD TV; port-side ensuite head with vanity and sink; and separate enclosed shower on the stateroom’s starboard side. The layout also makes the head accessible from the cabin interior. Moving aft, there’s a bunk area with a pair of single berths, each 6 feet, 3 inches long – perfect for a couple, kids or anglers.

With the V-46, VBW was the first to design and engineer a large designated dry space for mechanical and electrical components – a “machinery room.” Accessed through an aft bulkhead door in the bunk area, the V-55’s machinery room contains the batteries and battery chargers, fire and ventilation systems, water heater, battery switches, generator, access to the electronics, fuel management systems as well as optional systems including a watermaker, Spot Zero water purifier and sonar tube. A 15 kW genset was chosen as standard equipment to ensure ample power for air conditioning, refrigeration and operation of a Seakeeper 9.

“In every way, this boat goes above and beyond,” says Pat. “We’ve raised the bar in this market segment of 50-plus-foot center consoles by leading in every important aspect for this size and style of boat – fuel capacity, beam, hull design, engineering, equipment, fishability and Viking-yacht accommodation levels.”
