![]() 58th Annual Antigua Yacht Show
![]() If there’s one thing that’s true, it’s that our team loves attending industry events. Not only is it a great way to network and meet fellow marine-focused companies, we also have the opportunity to strengthen past and present relationships. Our team actively scouts global superyacht events to help grow our company and to provide resources for the event attendees. After all, boat owners need trusted marine technicians and facilities they can rely on. Our team highly values this face-to-face communication. Why? Because it fosters longer-lasting relationships, encourages trust, and therefore strengthens the mission of The Yard Brisbane. Recently we traveled to the West Indies to attend the 58th Annual Antigua Yacht Show. Over the course of the event, we enjoyed educating spectators on our services and facilities, connecting with colleagues, and of course, enjoying the stunning Caribbean waters. By traveling to these global events, we keep our skills sharp, harbor relationships, and stay in the loop of the latest industry trends and updates. The Antigua Yacht Show was especially crucial this year due to Australia’s latest bill . The Special Recreational Vessels Bill permits foreign and flagged superyachts to charter in Australian waters. Before the law was put into place, there were more limited area where foreign vessels could set sail and charter to. We were excited to share this update with superyacht owners at this year’s event, and to mention our convenient location near the Port of Brisbane. With heightened travel to the South Pacific region due to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2021 America’s Cup in Auckland, more boat owners will be traveling to the Australasia area. The new bill makes it even easier for boat goers to stop in Australia without facing exorbitant fees or mountains of paperwork. Our team is looking forward to this change, and the opportunity to work with worldwide boaters. This year’s event took place across four locations: Nelson’s Dockyard Marina, UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Falmouth Harbour Marina, and the Antigua Yacht Club Marina. There was about 90 world-class charter yachts, which attendees were given exclusive access to tour. The event attendees also were given the opportunity to meet the captains and crews of the charter vessels, who serve as key components of any luxury superyacht charter. The Antigua Yacht Show is a favorite of many, and for good reason: cocktail parties, dinners, social events, and an overall relaxed atmosphere. Over the six-day event, participants enjoyed the viewing portions of the show, as well as an emergency preparedness session, wine tastings, information hours covering a variety of topics, and finally, a chef’s competition! Our team left the Antigua Yacht Show feeling energized for the next superyacht show. With each event we travel to, we build upon our experience and expertise, grow relationships, and stay on top of trends and industry updates. By attending these events, we are strengthening The Yard Brisbane to ultimately better serve our customers and provide the utmost levels of care. We are looking forward to seeing what 2020 brings, and the years beyond. Interested in what event we’ll be attending next? Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram to stay updated!

![]() Paris puts on a show for Olympic Opening Ceremony![]() Share this:
Let the Paris 2024 Olympic Games begin! On Friday, the Paris 2024 Olympic Games were officially opened with the Opening Ceremony along the River Seine. The animating force, the raison d’être of the Paris 2024 Games is: “Games Wide Open.” A fitting touchstone for the first summer Games in eight years without the shadow of intense COVID-19 protocols, and with a determination to do things differently. As such, Paris was ready to put on a show for the world celebrating freedom, and organizers thought outside the box when it came to the Opening Ceremony. For the first time ever, the Opening Ceremony did not take place within a stadium, but rather along the River Seine. As a result, the Ceremony featured unprecedented accessibility for the public, with over 320,000 spectators expected to come out to watch the show and cheer on the approximately 6,800 participating in the parade. ![]() Athletes from 205 delegations floated down the river in 85 boats, starting with Greece, who retains the honour of proceeding first as the birthplace of the Olympic Games. They were followed by the Olympic Refugee Team, flying under the Olympic flag. After that, nations proceeded down the river in alphabetical order, according to the French spelling of the country. Along the six kilometre voyage, there were 12 “artistic tableaux” involving approximately 2000 French performers. The tableaux took athletes and spectators on a journey of values and ideas, including: enchanté, synchronicity, liberty, equality, fraternity, sisterhood, sportsmanship, festivity, darkness, solemnity, solidarity, and eternity. ![]() The journey also took athletes past many of Paris’ most iconic landmarks and historic architecture, many of which have been converted to venues for the Games, including the Eiffel Tower, the Esplanade des Invalides, and the Grand Palais. The Olympic flame also took a journey through French culture to arrive for the big moment of the cauldron lighting. A masked torchbearer based on a number of masked characters who have left their mark on French culture, such as the Phantom of the Opera and Ezio from Assassin’s Creed, flipped and jumped over Paris rooftops, ziplined over the Seine, and wandered through the Louvre, where figures of the worlds’ most famous paintings had left their frames to watch from the windows. ![]() References to French literature, music, architecture and history abounded throughout the performances, with some highlights including performers suspended from the scaffolding surrounding the reconstruction of Notre Dame, a performance by rock band Gojira alongside a headless Marie Antoinette. And would it be France without a fashion show? READ: What athletes from around the world will wear for the Opening Ceremony of Paris 2024 Some performers had less obvious connections to France, but widespread appeal, like pop star Lady Gaga, who gave a cabaret performance in French. As has become a tradition over the last few Olympic Games, John Lennon’s “Imagine” was performed, this time by French artist Juliette Armanet. ![]() Canada cruised along the Seine as an instantly recognizable collective in head-to-toe red. With many nations struggling with how to protect their athletes from the pouring rain through the ceremony, Team Canada’s lululemon kit luckily included a rain poncho! And no amount of rain could dampen the joy of the Opening Ceremony. Team Canada’s delegation was led by flag bearers Andre De Grasse and Maude Charron , both of whom are reigning Olympic champions in athletics and weightlifting, respectively. Team Canada shared a boat with China, Cameroon, Chile, and Central African Republic (we’re talking about big boats)! READ: De Grasse and Charron to be Team Canada’s Opening Ceremony flag bearers for Paris 2024 ![]() Team USA and Team Australia were penultimate in the parade of nations as the upcoming hosts of the Olympic Summer Games, with LA 2028 and Brisbane 2032 coming up next. Host nation France closed out the parade with their staggering 609 athlete delegation. More entertainment awaited Team Canada athletes when they arrived at the Trocadero. But meanwhile, Team Canada’s first breaking Olympian, Phil Wizard, provided some for his Canadian teammates as he showed off a few moves in front of the Eiffel Tower. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Phil Wizard (@philkwizard) Paris 2024 spared nothing when it came to the theatrics. As all the athletes found their way back to dry (wet) land, a silver robot horse carrying a woman rider wearing the Olympic flag as a cape glided over the water, only to turn into a real horse and rider on land, ceremoniously delivering the flag to be raised for the opening of the Games. The masked torch bearer headed the torch off to the legendary French soccer player Zinedine Zidane, who then handed it off to Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal, who took the torch as the Eiffel Tower began a light show. Meanwhile Nadal boarded a boat and rode along the Seine with the flame, where he handed the torch to American tennis player Serena Williams, who handed it to Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci and then American sprinter Carl Lewis. The final stages of the torch relay showcased international cooperation and friendship amongst various legends of sport. ![]() The boat finally pulled up to a dock near the Louvre where the torch was passed to along by an ever-increasing number of notable French athletes. Marie-José Pérec and Teddy Riner finally lit the cauldron in the Jardin des Tuileries. The cauldron took flight in a balloon-like structure. And then FINALLY the moment that all Canadians were hoping for after rumours were swirling for weeks…Celine Dion serenaded the world from a stage on the Eiffel Tower, closing the Opening Ceremony with a beautiful connection to Canada. The Canadian singer was visibly overcome with emotion. Paris lived up to its name as the City of Light, literally and figuratively sparkling in front of the world’s eyes. And now, we wait to watch Team Canada’s 337 athletes shine in the competition to come from now until August 11. This opening ceremony, a beast so bold as to have taken over the city of Paris almost entirely, is now a memory to cherish rather than a challenge to conquer. It is difficult to properly convey the scope of this accomplishment and the sacrifices and accommodations made by this city to make it happen. The ambition was to create a truly unique ceremony, something new and inclusive and inspiring. By that metric, this was a fabulous success. Through the choppy waters of the River Seine came boat after boat of athletes, their arrivals punctuated by performances on the river, its banks and throughout the city . A story was told as the Olympic flame was delivered through the city, the Eiffel Tower beamed as it never had before, Zinedine Zidane bookended it all and everything seemed to go off without a hitch. The city of lights danced as one in the rain. There were drag queens and silver horses and Louis Vuitton suitcases and a mysterious masked figure (which may or not have been Zizou all along?). Lady Gaga thrilled, and Céline Dion was c'est magnifique in closing the show atop la Tour Eiffel. It was awkward at times, and my goodness was it wet, but by the end you had to step back and marvel at the feat of pulling this whole thing off. Of course it all came at a cost. There was irony in the motto of these Olympics — Games Open Wide — as the city had very much been slammed shut on ceremony day by an unprecedented peacetime security operation. There was an armed police officer for every civilian on the streets of Paris, and many of those streets were blocked off entirely. Enough metro stations were shut to almost render the whole thing useless, a situation worsened by the overnight arson attacks on the high-speed rail lines in and out of the city. The locals, it seemed, had long since cleared out. Anyone who was left was braced for the hours-long battle through security to take up their vantage point along the river or in the Trocadéro. There is a reason that something like this hasn't been attempted at an Olympic Games before. A traditional opening ceremony, held in a stadium, is predictable and relatively safe. You can push the boundaries all you like creatively but logistically speaking everything is contained and manageable. To bring this vision to life meant preparing for every eventuality, foreseeing the unforeseeable, preparing for the unpreparable. It meant shutting down Paris. Indeed the only thing that the organisers couldn't prevent was the poor weather, which unfortunately drowned out much of what could have made this night that little bit more magical. The specific timings of this ceremony were all designed with the sunset in mind, a sunset that was entirely blanketed by thick cloud. What a shame that an otherwise resplendent Parisian week turned to deluge at the precise moment the opening ceremony began. The rain arrived within minutes of the event beginning and did not relent. The athletes seemed unbothered, so too the many hundreds of thousands of people who clamoured for a glimpse. They donned their ponchos and they braved the downpour, determined to make a memory even if it didn't match the picture they had formed in their head. Perhaps there was a message in that. Even something like this, the absolute pinnacle of creativity, planning and production, can fall foul of something completely out of human hands. Our ability to control everything will forever be compromised, but you can always make the most of what presents itself. The more prevalent themes of the opening ceremony were hard to miss. In his program notes, creative director Thomas Jolly spoke of "peace, respect and diversity" as the key marks he wanted to hit. He certainly didn't miss. Jolly's most pointed remarks though referred to the wider context these Olympics find themselves in — a world "at the crossroads of history and innovation, heritage and creativity" — and for the dream he was trying to create — "a world-city where a plural conception of living together is emerging: the possibility of an 'us'". And at its heart, isn't that what the Olympic Games is all about? Athletes and spectators come divided by national colours and competition but upon arrival immediately blend into one. These Games, like this opening ceremony, can be a celebration of humanity. An all too timely reminder of our shared sameness while still highlighting excellence. Of recognising the joy of something as trivial as sport in the hope it can mend the world's wounds in some small way. Cynicism is easy, but this was an opening ceremony that pleaded with us to feel something, to dream something. There could be no better way to welcome the Paris Olympics. Let the Games begin.

Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams carried Olympic torchIn an Olympics opening ceremony surprise, Rafael Nadal carried the Olympic torch once it reached the Eiffel Tower. Nadal might as well have honorary French residency after winning a record 14 French Opens. He won four in a row from 2005-2008, five in a row from 2010-2014, another four in a row from 2017-2020 and his final one in 2022. He is 112-4 all-time at Roland Garros. A statue of him was erected outside the stadium in 2021. Nadal has 22 Grand Slams total. Nadal then passed the torch to fellow tennis legend Serena Williams. Three of her 23 Grand Slam titles came at the French Open. Carl Lewis, a four-time Olympic champion at the 1984 Games, and Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci, who scored the first perfect 10 in Olympic history at the 1976 Games, also were part of the torch’s final journey. — Nancy Armour Amelie Mauresmo passed Olympic torch to Tony ParkerThe tennis theme in the Olympic torch relay continued when Amelie Mauresmo, the only French player to be No. 1 in the Open era, took the torch after it arrived off the boat. Tony Parker, who paved the way for French players in the NBA and won four titles with the San Antonio Spurs, took the handoff from Mauresmo. Parker and Carter continued running with the torch after they passed it over to a trio of French athletes. — Nancy Armour Celine Dion at opening ceremony dazzledThe legendary singer Celine Dion performed at the opening ceremony after the Olympic Cauldron was lit. Who sang 'Imagine' at the Olympics?Pianist Sofianne Pamart and singer Juliette Armanet performed “Imagine,” the John Lennon and Yoko Ono song. Team USA's LeBron James, Coco Gauff not slowed by rainThe rain wasn’t spoiling the party for LeBron James, Coco Gauff and the rest of the U.S. Olympic team. “Representing the red, white and blue, there’s no better time,” James said during an interview with NBC’s Maria Taylor during the parade of nations. “We’re here for the USA and ready to go out and compete at a high level.” The NBA superstar and the Grand Slam champion were selected as flagbearers by the rest of the U.S. team. Flagbearers held their country’s flags aloft as the team boats floated down the Seine while other athletes waved smaller flags. But Gauff and James also took time to pose for photos with others on the boat – including the captain – and take in the sights of Paris. “Seeing a lot of water, first off,” Gauff said. “But also some amazing people, a lot of amazing athletes and we’re all excited to represent Team USA.” Asked if the steady rain put a damper on their special moment, James said no. “The rain can’t stop us,” he said. — Nancy Armour Axelle Saint-Cirel performs French national anthem on Grand Palais roofOn the roof of the Grand-Palais and wearing colors of the French flag, Axelle Saint-Cirel, the Choeur and the Maîtrise de Radio France performed the French national anthem, called The Marseillaise. It was composed in 1792 by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle, who was an officer for the French Engineers. It was declared the national anthem in 1795. As the national anthem was performed, the Republic Guard raised the flag at the Trocadéro. Composer Victor le Masne musically rearranged the national anthem for the opening ceremony. Steph Curry, A'ja Wilson at Olympics opening ceremonyWomen's basketball forward A'Ja Wilson looks to have added an extra piece of fashion to her Team USA Ralph Lauren outfit — thanks to the help of Steph Curry. And here are Sha'Carri Richardson's nails from the opening ceremony. What country has the most athletes in the Olympics? There are 10,714 athletes from 206 different countries scheduled to take part in this year's Olympic Games. The United States will have the largest national delegation at the Summer Games in Paris with 593 athletes. Host nation France is second with 573, followed by Australia (460), Germany (427), Japan (404), Italy (403), China (388), Spain (382), Great Britain (327) and Canada (318) rounding out the top 10. Why was Australia after Zambia and Zimbabwe at opening ceremony? The sight of the Australian team coming after Zambia and Zimbabwe might have taken those who know their alphabet by surprise. But there was a reason for the Aussies being so far out of alphabetical order. Countries that are hosting upcoming Olympics come at the end of the Parade of Nations. Brisbane is hosting the 2032 Summer Games, so Australia was the third-to-last team. The United States was second-to-last, with the Olympics returning to Los Angeles in four years. And France, the host of these Paris Olympics, was the last country in the 85-boat flotilla. — Nancy Armour Olympics opening ceremony order of countriesThe order of the parade of nations is determined by the French spelling of their country names. Germany is Allemagne in French, for example, so it goes with the As, not the Gs. The only exceptions are the United States, which is Etats-Unis in French but goes second-to-last because it is hosting the next Summer Games, and France, because it’s the host country. Metal band at Paris Olympics: Who is Gojira? The metal band Gojira , who performed at the Olympics opening ceremony, is made up of Joe Duplantier, Mario Duplantier, Christian Andreu and Jean-Michel La- badie. They performed at the Conciergerie, which was the residence of French kings in medieval times. It became a prison during the French revolution and Marie-Antoinette was one of its most famous prisoners. Gojira performed alongside singer Marina Viotti. Aya Nakamura Olympics opening ceremony performanceAya Nakamura is one of France’s most famous pop stars, performing performed "Pookie, Djadja" and "For me formidable, La Bohéme" at the opening ceremony alongside 60 musicians from the Republican Guard and 36 choristers of the French Army. Nakamura mixes elements of R&B, Afropop and Parisian street slang, and her most famous song is “Djadja.” She’s been compared to Rihanna and Cardi B. Why Russia, Belarus are banned from 2024 OlympicsOnce again, Russia is technically banned from appearing at the Olympic Games . Yet once again, Russian athletes will compete under a different name − a handful of them, at least. At the 2024 Paris Olympics , which begin this week, 15 athletes from Russia − and 18 from neighboring Belarus − are slated to compete as "Individual Neutral Athletes," or AINs for short, according to the most recent statistics released by the International Olympic Committee on Saturday . The AIN classification means that Russian and Belarusian flags, national anthems and uniforms will be absent from the Paris Games. This punishment was levied by the International Olympic Committee following its invasion of Ukraine. — Tom Schad How many athletes are on Team USA?There are 593 American Olympians at the Paris Games. Why is Peyton Manning wearing an arm band?NBC opening ceremony co-host Peyton Manning sported an arm band on his right forearm during the opening ceremony broadcast, much like he did during his playing days as an NFL quarterback. He joked he was wearing it because he had notes on all 200-plus countries in the opening ceremomny. Giannis Antetokounmpo on being Greece's flag bearer“That is an honor,” he said . “If I am the flag bearer, great. If I am not, OK. I am just happy that I have a good coaching staff and a good team, I am in the Olympics." Who designed the Olympics flag?Pierre de Coubertin, who is considered the founder of the modern Olympics, designed the rings in July 1913. The Olympics logo was first used on a flag in 1914. That original flag is now at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne. The IOC officially adopted the rings logo and flag in 1914. Americans in ParisRachael Raskovich, Amanda Mason-Sekula and Kelly Holmes arrived at the opening ceremony wearing American flag themed hats, red white and blue glasses and sequin USA jackets with "Proud American" stitched on the back. "Amazon," Raskovich said with a smile when asked about the gear. The trio of friends met in law school and said they will spend the next week or so hopping around to events around the city. They have tickets to beach volleyball and equestrian, Raskovich said, among other sports. Their group was just one of the many clad in red, white and blue that lined the southern banks of the Seine River on Friday night. Doris Ng of Chicago was among the U.S. spectators who were still searching for a good spot from which to view the ceremony in the hour before it began. "We thought we were going to be on time," she said. "I think everybody else beat us to the punch already." Fortunately, she also has tickets to the closing ceremony, she said. — Tom Schad Not every local was in a festive moodOne man saw my media credential and wanted to make sure — despite barely speaking English — that he was upset over a rumor Celine Dion had been paid 2 million Euros to perform one song at the opening ceremony. Another woman, an American who has lived in Paris for 15 years, said property taxes went up and yet Parisians were not given much access to events or even public spaces to watch the festivities despite the financial and social burden being put on them. But even when the rain began falling, people did not scatter to look for shelter. Instead they powered through, trying to get a better look at the bleu, blanc and rouge streaks being left in the sky by an airplane flyover. Restaurants, which don’t have televisions here, were generally not busy. If you were going out to eat Friday night, it’s because you didn’t care to watch the show live. But inside one of them in a residential area near the Eiffel Tower, you could hear the singing of La Marseillaise, the French National Anthem. For a few minutes, the din of conversation went completely silent. — Dan Wolken Team USA opening ceremony outfitTeam USA’s opening ceremony outfit is a modern take on a tailored look. On top, a tailored single-breasted wool blazer with red and white tipping is worn over a striped oxford shirt. The bottom is a more casual tapered jean and classic suede buck shoe fit. Ralph Lauren works closely with Team USA and the goal, as always, is to “do something graphic and uniquely American,” chief brand and innovation officer David Lauren said. To account for the heat, the company constantly looks at different fabrics and layering systems to keep the athlete’s body temperature in check, Lauren said. All items in both the opening and closing ceremony outfits are manufactured in the United States. Coco Gauff opens up on being U.S. flag bearer, making Olympic debutCoco Gauff is making her Olympic debut in Paris and she is one of two U.S. flag bearers . “(Competing) in the Olympics has always been up there with winning a Grand Slam, like top goals,” Gauff told USA TODAY Sports this summer. Read our full feature on Gauff . On the opening ceremony red carpet, Serena Williams was asked about Gauff being the flag bearer. "Isn't that great. I'm so excited to see her tonight. I'm just so happy for her," the tennis legend said. USA flag bearers 2024Basketball superstar LeBron James and tennis star Coco Gauff are the flag bearers for the Americans. Gauff is the first tennis player to serve in the role. Why is Snoop Dogg at Olympics? With his mind on the Olympics and the Olympics on his mind, Snoop Dogg is, indeed, back for the 2024 Paris Olympics . The rapper, who will carry the torch ahead of the opening ceremony , is primed for a bigger role three years after his reactions to the dressage competition with Kevin Hart went viral at the Tokyo Games. Snoop will appear regularly on “Primetime in Paris,” serving as a “ special correspondent ” for NBC. During parts of the primetime show, Snoop Dogg will interact with Team USA athletes, their families, or explore Paris and share his experiences and insights with the night's audience. He's also carrying the Olympic torch . Paris Olympics closing ceremony dateThe 2024 Summer Games will hold the closing ceremony on Aug. 11 How many times has Paris hosted the Olympics?Paris has hosted the Summer Olympics three times: 1900, 1924 and 2024. Are any U.S. athletes skipping the opening ceremony?About 350 of Team USA’s 592 athletes will march – or rather, float – in today's opening ceremony, according to Nicole Deal, who oversees the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee’s security operations. That means about 40% of the U.S. delegation will be absent, though that is not exactly unusual. Many athletes and teams – especially those competing early in the Games – choose to pass on the opening ceremony because it often runs late into the night and requires them to spend several hours on their feet. U.S. gymnasts and swimmers, for example, regularly skip the ceremony to rest up for their competitions – which, in some cases, begin the next morning. U.S. swimming star Katie Ledecky said earlier this week that she never planned on going to the Paris opening ceremony for this very reason. She swims the 400-meter freestyle Saturday morning. — Tom Schad We occasionally recommend interesting products and services. Team USA is off down the SeineTeam USA's contingent of nearly 600 athletes is making the trek down the famed Seine, which will take the Olympians past the Trocadero, the Austerlitz Bridge and many other culturally rich locations before arriving near the Eiffel Tower. French anthem sung by Axelle Saint-CirelFrench mezzosoprano Axelle Saint-Cirel, wearing the colors of the French flag and holding an enormous Tricolore, sang a stunning rendition of France's national anthem, "La Marseillaise." Saint-Cirel's singing would have been remarkable by itself, but the drama was elevated by the fact that she was on the very top of the Grand Palais the towering exhibition hall and museum along the Champs-Élysées. Minions attempt, fail to join OlympicsThe Minions, popular characters from the Despicable Me franchise, have blessed the opening ceremonies with a slapstick attempt at Olympic participation. The lesson? It turns out you can't do a javelin competition in a submarine. Why the Minions? Illumination Studios Paris is the animation studio responsible for the mischievous yellow...creatures, and its headquarters is located mere blocks away from the Seine River. Olympic Surfing will take place in TahitiThe opening ceremonies have cut away from Paris entirely, switching to shots from the other side of the world in Tahiti. Why? The Surfing competition at the 2024 Paris Games will take place many thousands of miles away from Paris, with Tahiti (the main island in French Polynesia, a semi-autonomous region governed by France) making a beautiful setting that just so happens to have the big waves required. Why are Russia and Belarus not in the Paris Olympics?Russia and Belarus are suspended by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) because of the ongoing war in Ukraine . Has Paris hosted the Olympics before?Paris has played host for the Summer Olympics twice, in 1900 and 1924. As a country, France has hosted six Olympic Games (three summer, three winter). They will host the 2030 Winter Olympics as well, with the competition spread throughout the French Alps. Metal band Gojira draws rave reviewsThe remarkable musical portion of the opening ceremonies continued with a Marie Antoinette-inspired performance from metal band Gojira . As the Olympians floated by the Conciergerie on the Seine, Gojira took the celebration of this 33rd Olympics into a unique place. Following up a song from the famous musical Les Miserables, Gojira's segment involved a beheaded and singing Marie Antoinette, punishing guitar riffs, flamethrowers, and fireworks. It is the opening night of the Paris Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad. It will not look like any Opening Ceremony of years past. Forget just a stadium, forget what you’ve seen before – this Ceremony is being staged all across Paris and along the Seine River, which runs through its heart…An extraordinarily ambitious concept by the organizers that has raised the degree of difficulty but also raised the stakes for a potentially unforgettable night to start these Olympic Games.” Peyton Manning on the athletes’ experience at the Opening Ceremony along the River Seine : “It’s great to see these athletes taking it all in, every moment of this boat ride. It’s something they’ll always remember. It’s unlike any pregame moment I’ve ever been a part of. You hear about that tunnel before a football or basketball game, but I’d argue this is the coolest tunnel of all time. Being on a boat on the River Seine, headed toward the Eiffel Tower, to start the Olympics? I don’t know how you beat that.” Noah Lyles to Maria Taylor on Team USA’s boat : “I love seeing moments made. That’s what I like to do as a performer and just seeing all the Olympians, knowing how much care and hard work went into this. [2028] is not promised so take it in now.” Kelly Clarkson on Celine Dion’s performance : “To have that moment. She’s a vocal athlete. She’s incredible…In my field, she is the gold [medal] winner for vocal athletes.” Tirico closing the Opening Ceremony : “The Opening Ceremony has gotten this thing off to a flying start. The 2024 Games promised unique, promised different, and the beginning has been just that, and with the Opening Ceremony behind us and the Games officially open, we’re now turning our attention to a blockbuster opening weekend of these Paris Olympics.” Manning as Opening Ceremony concludes : “You can see the emotion on their faces and how much pride they have in representing their country. I went to the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996 as a college student, never got to participate as an American football player, always wanted to, so to be a small part of the Opening Ceremony here in Paris has been a great thrill for me.” Savannah Guthrie on Paris : “Absolutely beautiful. Paris in any weather still beats just about anywhere in the world.” Manning on the emotions of the Opening Ceremony : “It’s such an emotional moment. For many of the athletes, just the fact that they’re here tonight makes this moment even more special. They truly are Olympians; this moment solidifies that. They can share this moment with their friends and family, unlike past Olympics where friends and family weren’t allowed.” Manning on the energy of the ceremony : “It’s got a little Mardi Gras feeling to it…It’s a party on the Seine. People are having a good time… I just love how fired up all the athletes are. The rain’s not doing one thing to them.” LeBron James to Taylor on being a Team USA flagbearer : “It’s an honor. It goes back all the way to my hometown and all of our communities. For myself and Coco ( Gauff ), for us to be able to represent our countries, us being Black kids as well and represent our culture and where we come from, it gives everybody so much hope and that’s all we can ask for. We take it with the utmost responsibility and honor.” Coco Gauff on being a Team USA flagbearer : “It means a lot to me to be here and represent Team USA and be with the GOAT, LeBron James. I’m so excited and can’t wait to do well in the Games.” Stephen Curry to Taylor on being a first-time Olympian : “To be here and experience it for myself, I’m a true fan out here. No matter what you experience in your career, there’s something very humbling about it. The gratitude flows when you know you’re an Olympic athlete and being on this boat with the rest of the American athletes. I’m excited to be here.” Manning on the rainy weather : “I just love how the athletes are having a great time. The rain is not dampening their spirits. I played in a Super Bowl in the rain. It’s not how you see it in your dreams, but it doesn’t take away from the moment. They’re all having a great time and they also have to go out and perform in the Olympics starting tomorrow. The balance of those emotions, that’s impressive to see.” Manning on Irish golfer Shane Lowry : “This is Irish golf weather right here. I promise you Shane is feeling right at home. He’s definitely got a cold beverage on that boat somewhere.” Clarkson on the fashion runway : “Everyone is included at this table. It doesn’t matter who you are. They represent all ages, all ethnicities, everything is represented on that runway, and I think that’s so important that Paris did that.” Manning reacting to the Canadian soccer team using a drone to watch opposition practice : “A little ‘Spygate’ in soccer in the Olympics.” Manning on wearing a quarterback wristband for the Opening Ceremony : “I have notes on all 200 countries, all 10,000 athletes.” Tirico : “That’s just Peyton Manning being Peyton Manning.” ABOUT NBC OLYMPICS The NBC broadcast network and streaming service Peacock will be the company’s primary platforms for its coverage of the Olympic Games Paris 2024, scheduled for July 26-Aug. 11.
