I was invited by a member to come here for my birthday lunch. I was so pleased there was plenty of parking and it was a warm and welcoming lobby filled with pictures and memorabilia. It was a sunny day and and the view of the sailboats and boats docked made for a lovely atmosphere. We had a delicious Salmon salad and some wonderfull rolls with butter. The plate was decorated with grapefruit, mandarin oranges and tomatoes. It was a very special lunch with good service. It was perfect all around

I came here for a Holiday Party b'ness event on a Sat night. BCYC is located at the end of Bayside (off PCH) in Newport Beach. We started w/ crab stuffed mushroom caps, Italian meat & cheese on skewers and mini beef wellingtons. In addition, there was crudite. All of the items were very good, and a good way to whet your palate during cocktail hour: 4 Stars. Unfortunately, dinner was not so great. First of all, the salad was garden variety: 3 Stars. Secondly, the entrees were under seasoned and lukewarm. I had the seabass and it needed S & P. Others had the filet, and they had similar comments: 2 Stars. Lastly, the tiramisu rescued the rest of the meal. The cocoa flavor was subtle, and the portion was large: 4 Stars. Regarding the ambiance, its very nice is the dining room. There is room for a band, and the view of the bay is beautiful: 5 Stars. Likewise, the staff is super nice and attentive. An associate and I brought our own wine, and they opened the bottles without a corkage fee: 5 Stars. BCYC is a great location for a business event. The view is beautiful, and the service is excellent. However, like most venues, expect to receive a "rubber chicken" kind of dinner.

Our Yacht Club recently had an event there on Prime Rib night, the food was fantastic, and all of the staff were so welcoming and friendly. I highly recommend BCYC if you have reciprocity. The view from the dining room was amazing and we saw all kinds of different boats going by as we ate dinner and watched the sunset.

This review is for Bruce and the event staff. We hosted our client appreciation event with 60 guests for a plated dinner and everything was fabulous. They worked with me on the menu, the room layout and the timing. The food was amazing (we had sea bass, steak filet and a vegan option), the service was sharp and on point and all my clients were absolutely thrilled. We will absolutely be using this venue again.

I love being a member here! Our kid is a racer in their program (has been since he was 6; now he's 11). The club goes by "The friendliest club in the bay." My mom is on the Los Commodores crew, where they dedicate time and effort fundraising for Camp Pendleton families (they got the Hope award from the White House a few years ago for raising over 100k). They help bring home the marines from afar, to spend the holidays with the families. I go there every Wednesday for lunch (I love their burger and fries!). My wife is also really involved in doing activities there. It's well worth the membership fees!

This yacht club is located in Newport Beach. It boasts that this year all the officers of the club are women! No surprise since this club is very supportive of women sailors. It hosted the nationally attended annual Women's Sailing Convention yesterday, which is always a LOT of fun and very well done by Gail Hines for the past 30 years! There are courses on every topic pertaining to sailing and sailors life, and afternoon on-the-water workshops for every level of sailor or sailor enthusiast. It is ALL ages. This year's guest speaker was a young woman who sailed on the Sail Like a Girl sailboat that won the sailing race to Alaska! She shared her slides, video clips and experience. They beat the other boats and donated three quarters of their winnings to Breast Cancer Research. The staff, and the food at the yacht club are great. They also have a wonderful inside bar, and various seating areas outside, and great dining room and cuisine. Stop by and check it out.

Thursday night was Prime Rib night. Outstanding. With popovers and au hi creamed spinach how could you go wrong. Two tables of salads one interesting salad was blackened chicken with pasta and peaches. Desert table also great every thing from sundaes to chocolate cake. Probably 20 different items. I must go back.

We had a banquet at this yacht club last evening. We were served dinner and dessert. For the dinner they served hotdogs and hamburgers. For the desert we had a cookie. What a complete disappointment and utter embarrassment. I would never go to this club again nor would I schedule a party at this establishment. They should be embarrassed. Stay away. Save your money. There are several other places that are far better value.

Amazing experience. Everyone from the Manager, Scott, to the servers, hosts, and chefs have positive, helpful attitudes. They will go out of their way to make your experience enjoyable. The food is well prepared and well presented. Can't say enough good things. Thanks for the best experience eating with friends in a wonderful atmosphere.

Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club to host 13th annual Corinthian Cup Regatta, Oct. 20-21

corinthian yacht club newport beach

Southern California’s junior sailors will compete in one-design race at Newport Beach Harbor.

NEWPORT BEACH — The 13th annual Corinthian Cup Regatta comes to Newport Beach Harbor, Oct. 20-21, giving junior sailors an opportunity to compete in several one-design classes. Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club hosts the regatta and invites junior sailor members of the Southern California Youth Yacht Racing Association, or SCYYRA.

As many as 80 junior sailors, between 7 and 18 years of age, are expected to participate in the dace, representing yacht clubs from Long Beach to San Diego.

The regatta will feature six one-design sailboat classes: Sabot, Laser, Laser Radial, CFJ, C420 and RS Tera.

Bahia Corinthian YC has hosted the Corinthian Cup, a fall regatta, since 2006.

“The event is unique because sailors compete not only as individuals within their respective classes, but also as part of their racing team to win the Corinthian Cup perpetual trophy,” a Bahia Corinthian YC spokesperson said in a released statement. “The perpetual trophy is awarded to the yacht club with the highest overall score based on participation and performance.  Extra points will be awarded to sailors travelling from yacht clubs outside of Newport Harbor to encourage sailors from San Diego to Long Beach and beyond to participate.”

Long Beach Yacht Club won the Corinthian Cup in 2017, the first team outside of Newport Beach Harbor to even win the regatta; the yacht club will defend its title this year.

Each class winner will be awarded a trophy; members of each winning team will be awarded Olympic-style medals. Juniors demonstrating the “Corinthian Spirit” on and off the water during the regatta will be awarded sportsmanship awards.

Teams will be entered into a free raffle, with several prizes up for grabs.

Breakfast services on Saturday and Sunday will be available in Bahia Corinthian YC’s Columbia Room; Sunday lunch and supper buffet will also be served.

Contact Bahia Corinthian YC junior program director Cameron MacClaren at 949-640-2402 for more information about the Corinthian Cup Regatta and other youth sailing events. Information is also available on the yacht club’s website, bcyc.org.

The facilities and amenities offered by the yacht club are also important to consider. Do they offer a variety of activities, such as sailing lessons or regattas? What are the amenities available, such as dining facilities, swimming pools, or fitness centers?

Reputation and community

The reputation and community of the yacht club are also important factors to consider. Research the club’s history, and look for reviews and testimonials from current and past members. Do they have a strong community, and does it align with your interests and values?

Accessibility and parking

Two new Venetian gondolas join Gondola Adventures’ fleet in Newport Harbor

Greg Mohr and his wife, Elisa, christen Luna, one of two new Venice-built gondolas.

• Show more sharing options

Greg Mohr could tell you everything you need to know about gondolas and then some, according to his wife, Elisa.

And oh, he’ll tell you.

“Gondolas have been around since at least the year 1094. That was the first time someone actually wrote the word down. Now, there are a bunch of things in the world that are called gondolas, but the original gondolas ... topped out many centuries ago at 36 feet or 11 meters,” said Mohr, laughing boisterously. “It’s my suspicion that that’s the longest that can make it around certain turns.”

“We like to say that [gondolas] are the No. 1 symbol of romance in the Western world, and I’m sure some people around the world have opinions, but I’m biased,” said Mohr.

The Mohrs run Gondola Adventures in Newport Beach, with a fleet of 15 gondolas and an even-larger team of gondoliers that come and go.

Their busiest season is around Valentine’s Day. This winter they booked 119 cruises on that romantic holiday alone and a total of 370 cruises between Feb. 1 and Feb. 15 — record highs, according to Elisa Mohr.

Most of the gondolas are bought used and then restored, but two of them — “Bella” and “Luna” (the former is named after the couple’s youngest daughter, Isabella) — came to the harbor fresh from a Venice workshop this past Memorial Day.

Luna is lowered down into the harbor at Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club.

“We have known for a long time that we want to get a gondola built in Venice. You’re going to have to figure how to get on ‘the list’ and that list … it’s about a five-year wait,” said Greg Mohr. “There’s always the chance you might get bumped down because of somebody’s somebody’s cousin.

“When you’re not local, you’re not going to get the favorable treatment, and you won’t know that because you’re not there to see. So, we have always just acquired gondolas that were already here. It is a whole lot more affordable. The shipping alone [from Italy] is the cost of a used car. Maybe not in this market now, but it is not cheap.”

Mohr said the family had never even considered the possibility that they’d be able to get new gondolas, but the chance presented itself when they had reached out to an Italian artisan named Saverio Pastor, who makes oars and forcolas — the latter being an oar lock.

“At the end of 2021, I contacted him saying we had some end of the year expense money and that we’d like to order some more oars,” said Mohr. “... We’re an odd client of his, ... and I said to him, ‘Do you know of anybody who is shipping any new or used gondolas to the U.S.?’ You can get your oars [shipped] in that container and you can save yourself $1,000 or more in shipping.”

Gondolier Eddie Rivera moves Bella, one of two new Venice-built gondolas, to make way for Luna.

The answer he received intrigued him.

“He said, ‘No, I don’t know about any containers coming your way. But Roberto dei Rossi, who’s a gondola builder, has three new gondolas that he can’t sell.’ Then, in all caps at the bottom of the email, it said: ‘JUST THINK ABOUT IT, GREG,’” said Mohr, laughing.

Mohr learned dei Rossi continued making the vessels throughout the pandemic, but few gondoliers were working. That left dei Rossi with boats that needed to be sold.

The Mohrs contacted dei Rossi in December and decided to work out a purchase.

“When we opened the container and looked at the boats, I’ve got to tell you; I have seen a lot of gondolas, and I am the kind of person who knows what a gondola can look like,” said Mohr. “I have seen some really beautiful gondolas. I have never seen a gondola this beautiful. They have the finish of a Steinway piano or a Rolls-Royce. They are just absolutely spectacular.

“They’re like a 36-foot-long Stradivarius violin on the water,” he said.

Greg Mohr, center, is helped by gondoliers Jonah Bonner, right, and Brad Biggs, as he removes the oars.

Bella and Luna were first taken out on the water on May 31 at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club with extended family members, a tradition for the business that had its beginnings as a yacht charter company the Mohrs acquired in 1993.

Tustin resident Andrew Ha and his wife, Lynelle, were the first paying customers to take Luna out in Newport.

Andrew Ha said he’d been wanting to do something special for their 11th wedding anniversary. After learning about Gondola Adventures via a Google search, out they went on June 1.

“It was definitely unique,” Ha said afterward. “We’ve never done anything like this outside of [Las] Vegas at the Venetian; nothing compared to this. It was really special and I’m glad we did it.”

Mohr noted his company, which is approaching its 30th year in operation, is not the first to bring gondolas to Newport Harbor. The man who started the city’s Christmas Boat Parade, John Scarpa, whom Mohr calls his “patron saint,” led the way in offering the timeless romantic rides in local waters.

“In a world where newer and more technologically advanced things are always pushing last year’s thing out of the way, we are doing the same exact way it was done a thousand years ago,” said Mohr.

Gondolier Robert Moe, left, helps Greg Mohr load furniture onto Bella.

Business Wire

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.--( BUSINESS WIRE )--Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club (BCYC) is pleased to announce that its membership and Board of Directors have chosen long-time member and current Vice Commodore, Rhonda Tolar, as their 2021 Commodore.

Tolar’s upcoming tenure continues a unique, perhaps unprecedented time at BCYC, and other Southern California yacht clubs (and beyond) when it comes to traditional yacht club leadership. Tolar will be the sixth female Commodore in BCYC’s 62-year history.

An active member of BCYC since 1999, in her new role, Commodore Tolar will act as the chief executive officer of the Club (on both land and water) subject to the control of the Board of Directors, and will be responsible for the overall general supervision, direction and control of the business and Officers of the Club.

“Preserving and enhancing BCYC’s mission and purpose is my top priority,” says Tolar. “We are like a family here, and I will strive to make decisions that reinforce BCYC’s long-standing reputation as the ‘friendliest club on the bay.’”

“I am greatly honored by the vote of confidence our membership and its Directors has extended, and thanks to the great leadership of outgoing Commodore Ginny Lombardi, the transition of power is moving forward smoothly and inclusively.”

Tolar emphasized, “Our goal in 2021 is to vigilantly continue all safety measures while providing a continuum for our members and their guests of providing the best possible experience a private yacht club can impart.”

2020 Commodore Ginny Lombardi commented, “Women concurrently holding the top leadership positions is a groundbreaking milestone in BCYC’s history. As such, I cannot think of a better leader and role model to take the helm in 2021 than Rhonda. I will cherish my time as Commodore during quite a memorable year, and I salute our members and staff for their support despite the difficulties!”

“Rhonda and I worked closely during the Covid-19 pandemic, we were able to identify new opportunities and paradigm shifts for the better. While there have been challenges, there is much for us to look forward to as we begin to return to normal.”

With an impressive background in both business as well as yachting, Commodore Tolar has already made a significant impact on BCYC’s sailing and social programming for both members, guests and visiting sailors.

Among her outstanding club accomplishments, one she is particularly proud of began in 2009 when she and Sail Fleet Captain Paul DeCapua established the official BCYC Taco Tuesday Racing Series. She has chaired the event for the last 12 years which also includes a fun after-race fiesta. The race attracts 15+ PHRF-rated vessels and 20+ Harbor 20’s.

In 2018, she also founded the Wild Sailing Regatta that includes three offshore races per year.

While she grew up on the water in a power-boating family, in 2007 Commodore Tolar began sailing, fell in love with the sport and has owned a series of winning sailing vessels. She and her crew have raced her Far 30, and Far 40 in competitions up and down the coast, from San Francisco to Ensenada. Balboa and Bahia Corinthian yacht clubs celebrated the start of the boating season Saturday with cannon blasts, bagpipes, boat inspections and pageantry all around.

“It’s a bit like a birthday party,” said Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club Commodore Tom Madden. “You have that excitement and anticipation one time a year for the start of boating season.”

The two clubs, both situated on Bayside Drive, enjoyed summerlike weather and capacity crowds for their opening day celebrations.

Balboa Yacht Club posted a new record for boats on display at their docks, with 85 sail and powerboats at the club.

“We got so many comments on how beautiful the boats looked this year with all of the flags flying,” said Balboa Yacht Club Commodore Ray Lewis.

Each club has its own special customs, but both clubs “close” the night before opening day, and open to signal the “clearing of the ice” – a tradition held by yacht clubs on the East Coast.

“We saw some ice last night, so we closed,” joked Bahia Corinthian Port Captain Mark Silvey. “It was cleared by the morning.”
