2019 Galeon 510 Skydeck review

The newly arrived galeon 510 skydeck is all about maximising time on the water, and the amount of living space.

Polish luxury motor yacht maker Galeon has landed back in Australia with a new generation of boats, and now under the guiding hand of Gold Coast-based distributor Alexander Marine Australia.

Launched with fanfare at the 2019 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show were the first two of the third-generation Galeon models – the 47 foot (14.3m) Galeon 460 Skydeck and the 53 foot (16.2m) Galeon 510 Skybridge – and they’ve already made a splash.

The model we’re focusing on for this review is the larger of the pair, the Galeon 510 Skydeck, the headline model for the range – for now.

What if you could be down at the jetty, jump on your motor yacht and be ready to bump out in a matter of minutes? Even better, when you get back to the marina, the bump-in is just as quick?

Sounds good already. But what about when you get to where you’re anchoring up, the boat transforms in minutes to provide wide, clutter-free living spaces with a bar (including stools) to one side, and a lounge area for drinking in those spectacular sunsets on the other?

2019 galeon 510 skydeck review 13

That’s what Galeon has done with the 510 Skydeck, the first of two next-gen models to come to Australia under the wing of Alexander Marine with a refreshed look and feel.

Galeon, the Polish luxury motor yacht maker, prides itself on a reputation of providing value for money, and its ability to quickly adapt to the latest technological innovations sweeping the industry.

Nowhere is that more apparent than with the Galeon 510 Skydeck.

Price and equipment

The all-fibreglass Galeon 510 Skydeck is priced from $1,999,000, which is a good price for this size of boat. The emphasis here is on the owner-operator, with the boat equipped with both bow and stern thrusters to help with maneuvering in tight spaces.

The Galeon 510 Skydeck has three cabins, including a full-beam amidships master stateroom and a VIP stateroom tucked into the bow. It also has two showers, as well as a freshwater shower built into the transom backing onto the teak-covered, electrically operated swim deck.

The hydraulic swim deck is rated to support 500kg, making it ideal for carrying a personal watercraft or small tender.

In the aft galley, appliances run to a Siemens convection microwave, a dishwasher, full-size 130-litre fridge and a two-burner ceramic cooktop with an extractor fan overhead. Stone-look Corian benchtops provide decent work space.

The Dometic air-conditioning system fitted to the Galeon 510 Skydeck is quite different, following European trends. Instead of using a gas refrigerant, the Galeon 510 Skydeck’s cooling system uses chilled water to temper the temperature throughout the interior.

Also included are a Fusion audio system, a 40-inch television with a BOSE soundbar in the saloon (it drops down out of sight when not in use), and a 32-inch in the master suite.

The Galeon 510 Skydeck’s genset is a Cummins-sourced Onan 17kW unit. Helping reduce overall power load are LED lights used throughout the boat, including six that add soft pools of illumination under the waterline.

The bridge is equipped with twin 12-inch Raymarine Axiom touchscreens that incorporate chartplotter, sounder and digital radar functions.

But the big attraction of this boat is the “Beach Mode” – a pair of fold-out cockpit 'balconies' that significantly expand the entertainment space both inside and out. More on that a bit later.

Hull and engineering

Galeon has been building boats for the last 35 years. Based in Poland, it also builds its growing third-generation line of motor yachts there.

The sides of the Galeon 510 Skydeck’s GRP variable deadrise vee hull, which it shares with the Galeon 500 Fly, are foam-cored, with the more heavy-duty hull bottoms made from resin-infused, hand-laid fibreglass to keep the boat’s centre of gravity low.

The 16-degree deadrise semi-displacement hull is built for comfort over outright speed. That said, it will still hunt along at more than 30 knots when asked. Topsides are also formed from fibreglass

The shaft-drive Volvo Penta D11-725 engines are housed full standing height engine room that can be accessed via the aft crew quarters. The machinery spaces provide plenty of access.

Saloon and helm station

The saloon is decked out in warm walnut veneer. A sliding door on the glass bulkhead gives access to/from the cockpit, the living area houses a long lounge to starboard and a U-shaped aft galley that wraps around to port.

The deep windows on either side of this area slide back to bring the outdoors inside. The lounge’s seatback will flip inward to face the seating outwards, while on the other side a folding benchtop swings upwards and outwards to turn the kitchen bench with its mixer tap into an outside-facing bar, complete with two drop-in bar stools. Life doesn’t get much better than that.

2019 galeon 510 skydeck review 40

A couple of steps lead up to the helm station with its single seat to starboard and a large L-shaped lounge to port.

Visibility from the helm station is excellent, helped by a single pane windscreen running the width of the cabin, and even side windows that dip down as they go forward, helping to judge closing distances when docking.

The helm also benefits from a huge electrically deployed side window that again comes to the fore when the owner-operator comes back into the marina

Above the space is an almost full-width sunroof that slides back to bathe the whole forward saloon in sunlight.

The helm’s layout is very car-like, and fitted with a sports steering wheel. Instruments surround it on a blacked-out surface that reduces glare, and the throttle controls for the Volvo Pentas humming quietly below fall easily to hand.

2019 galeon 510 skydeck review 31

Directly in line with the helm chair, which can swing around to face the saloon, are a pair of 12-inch Raymarine touchscreens that allow different functions – chartplotter, sounder or radar – to display at once. To their left are the engine status displays for the pair of Volvo Penta powerplants that provide the Galeon 510 Skydeck’s drive.

Switches are arranged logically along the leading edge of the staggered dash.

Accommodation

The Galeon 510 Skydeck has enough space onboard to sleep six people via two queen-size double beds, and a twin-share bunk. There is the option for a crew’s sleeping quarter tucked in behind the lazarette, which doubles as a wet head and a freshwater shower for the swimming deck, but on our test boat the area is converted to provide more refrigeration space.

The forward VIP stateroom contains a feature skylight that floods the area in natural light. A Venetian-style blind gives privacy from the foredeck while Roman blinds drop down from the tops of the hull-mounted windows.

2019 galeon 510 skydeck review 27

The bed is cut into the bow behind the collision bulkhead, and framed in a classy looking designer headboard – Galeon calls this its “enlightened” bedhead.

Air-conditioning controls are close to hand. The suite also contains a standing room wardrobe, a full-length mirror, and a set of drawers. A separate door provides private access to the bathroom shared with the bunk room.

The shared bathroom has plenty of mirrors. It contains a wet head with opening portholes, and a single glass bowl that serves as the sink. The standing-room shower is lined on one wall in mosaic — a Gallon signature.

To starboard are the under-over bunk beds of the guest accommodation. The bunks are a good length, and there’s an opening porthole in the picture window fitted into the hull.

A skylight lets more natural light flood in from the salon above via a frosted glass skylight.

2019 galeon 510 skydeck review 30

The master stateroom is located amidships and runs the full beam of the Galeon 510 Skydeck.

The island double bed is highlighted by an unusual feature; a meticulously crafted, backlit bedhead that casts diffused light around the room.

To one side is a lounge, to the other makeup station complete with flip-up mirror built into the tabletop.

A 32-inch television is fitted to the forward bulkhead. There’s a large walk-in wardrobe, while letterbox slot-like picture windows that appear to stretch the length of the stateroom provide an impressive view to either side, giving an open, airy feel.

A pair of French doors open up to reveal a combination washer and dryer; an option that owners who want to maximise time on the Galeon 510 Skydeck are likely to tick.

2019 galeon 510 skydeck review 26

The his-and-hers basins in the attached private bathroom are square-edged and formed from glass. A Galeon signature is the full standing height shower, again decked out in mosaic tile.

Outdoor living

Hanging off the back of the Galeon 510 Skydeck is a large hydraulic swim deck which, as it drops, reveals a set of steps that appear out of the portside corner.

Steps to either side of the hydraulic swim platform, topped with gates, lead up to the cockpit which is a huge space, lined aft by a lounge that curls around and doubles as a pair of short sunbeds. In the centre is a wide, shallow table. There’s enough space either side of the lounge area to flick a lure if the desire arises.

2019 galeon 510 skydeck review 38

The flybridge overhead will provide some shade over this area either early or late in the day.

The Galeon 510 Skydeck also has its neat Beach Mode party trick that will make you the envy of the anchorage.

Release two latches, hold down a switch, and within minutes the cockpit area transforms into a 6.0-metre wide space as the coamings drop out and down to yield significantly more real estate. Chrome bollards drop into special recesses, and black rope forms an outer lifeline framing off the area to either side.

It gets better. To port, two bar stools drop into the deck behind the saloon’s bar, with a flip-up tabletop turning the attention outdoors. On the other side, the saloon lounge’s setback flips back to shift the focus outwards, making it a perfect end-of-day spot to take in a sunset.

2019 galeon 510 skydeck review 35

Forward, the bow is dedicated to a pair of large, adjustable-back sunbeds split by the large skylight that filters light into the forward stateroom.

The bow is accessed via walkways with side decks deep enough to provide a sense of security when going forward, and either side of the cabin’s roof has a stainless steel handrail.

The handrail ringing the 510 Skydeck is the only visible sign of compromise on the Galeon that we can spot; the lower part of it uses a stainless steel wire rather than a solid stainless steel tube.

What sets the Galeon 510 Skydeck apart from most other 50-foot motor yachts out there is the Skydeck — Galeon’s name for its set-and-forget flybridge.

The emphasis here is on being able to quickly get in or out of the marina and on your way to enjoying the boat. The key is a weatherproof cover spanning the entire flybridge that retracts or deploys in less than a minute – all you need to do in preparation is shift some seatbacks.

2019 galeon 510 skydeck review 37

With the flybridge covered, the Galeon 510 Skydeck takes on a sweeping, coupe-like profile without the traditional visual clutter of a flybridge cruiser. It’s sort of a Clayton’s fly – the one you have when you don’t want all the trouble of a flybridge.

The disappearing flybridge also is a much easier solution to fitting and removing myriad covers, and even makes berthing much more stress-free as everything is well protected. You still have to go downstairs and cover the windows, though.

Accessed via the cockpit ladder, the flybridge is a huge entertaining space lined in lounges that wrap around almost all the available space. The lounge seatbacks to either side of the central helm position flip aft to provide an extra couple of forward-facing seats for when the Galeon 510 Skydeck is on the hustle.

2019 galeon 510 skydeck review 36

The flybridge’s helm station is equipped with a comfortable captain’s chair, and has a flip-up windscreen in front of the console to provide protection from the elements while underway.

On the water

Powering the Galeon 510 Skydeck is a pair of 725hp Volvo Penta D11-725 shaft drive turbo-diesel engines. These are the updated version of ths D11 series engines, with more power than the versions they replace. Performance is delivered over a 1750rpm rev band.

Powerful and responsive, the Volvos are a good match for the stately Galeon. The engines are hugely responsive to throttle inputs, thrumming away quietly at cruising speeds, with the trim tabs helping to the big displacement hull up onto a plane.

2019 galeon 510 skydeck review 7

The engine and hull are set up more for comfort than outright speed, with the Galeon 510 Skydeck hitting a top speed of 33 knots at 2250rpm when pushed hard.

At a more sedate 20.5 knots and 2000rpm, and with the trim tabs set to get the transom sitting higher, the boat has a range of 200 nautical miles on a 10 per cent fuel reserve.

Performance*

* Both engines

Underway, the 16-plus-metre Galeon 510 Skydeck is equally responsive to the helm, with small inputs to the leather-wrapped stainless steel-spoked wheel flowing through to the rear of the boat via the hydraulic steering system.

At higher speeds, the Galeon 510 Skydeck leans into turns comfortably, carving out the radius predictably.

2019 galeon 510 skydeck review 6

Visibility is excellent all around thanks to an almost 360-degree wall of glass around the saloon, and the unbroken field of vision through the single-pane windscreen. Deep sheets of glass to either side of the helm station offer great visibility while docking or at high speeds while underway.

One of the joys of being out on the water is maximising the amount of time you can spend on it. This is the Galeon 510 Skydeck’s forte, with an almost set-and-forget flybridge that stows neatly away under a weather shade at the press of a button.

If you decide to head out and conditions don’t suit, the boat is already stowed in coupe mode, meaning you don’t even have to think about upstairs before casting the lines.

2019 galeon 510 skydeck review 14

Not only that, but once the anchor drops at your destination the Galeon 510 Skydeck’s cockpit transforms into a much bigger boat, again at the flip of a couple of latches and the press of a button.

In this regard, it’s not just the Galeon 510 Skydeck’s price tag that represents extremely good value for money.

Cruising Life Aboard the Galeon 510 Skydeck

  • By Patrick Sciacca
  • Updated: March 15, 2018

Galeon Yachts

It’s a few days before thanksgiving when I speak to Stephanie Rovers at her home in Upstate New York. Her grandchildren are laughing and playing in the background as she multitasks prepping a family feast with our interview, as well as planning for her and her husband, Adrian’s, next adventure: a five-month, around-the-world cruise on a 900-passenger ship. The voyage will take the enterprising duo from Cuba to Thailand, arriving home by spring, just in time to launch their beloved Galeon 510 Skydeck for another summer of cruising around their backyard of Lake Champlain and beyond. The Roverses are seafaring enthusiasts through and through. In fact, in the two years since buying the 510 Skydeck, the couple has amassed 600 hours on her motors and thousands of nautical miles under her hull, cruising from their Plattsburgh, New York, home into Canada, as well as down the Eastern Seaboard, across to the west coast of Florida, around to the Keys, and into the Bahamas and back. And while most cruisers would find a nice marina to dock at and rest after a day’s travels on a trip of this magnitude, this couple has another passion: golf.

Adrian says they plan their north-to-south route and vice versa to stay at marinas that have golf courses within riding (they keep fold-up electric bicycles on board) or driving distance. From Quebec City in Canada to Emerald Bay in the Exumas, the Roverses hit the links every chance they get.

“Everywhere you go, you have to get off the boat and get exercise,” he says with conviction. “It’s nothing for us to get into a marina and get our bikes or call a taxi, and go play golf for four hours. Then [we] come back and go out for dinner.”

Galeon Yachts

Destination Bahamas

And unlike couples who find that kind of freedom only later in life, the Roverses have always opened opportunity’s door when they hear a knock. They started their at-sea lifestyle aboard a 23-footer when their children were just kids. Stephanie says they took that boat up into Canada and all the way east to the Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park to see the beluga whales.

The cruising seed was planted, and the boats began to grow with their travel plans. There was a 32-footer and more exploration north, west and east, and then a 42-footer that was the first vessel the Roverses took down the East Coast to their second home in Florida.

Sandals Resorts

Stephanie says the first time they headed down the Hudson River and took in the Manhattan skyline from the water, it made an impression. “We had the same view that our ancestors saw,” she says with pride.

Their first night in New York, they cruised around Manhattan and up the Harlem River near Spuyten Duyvil in the Bronx, and then cruised back down the Hudson, docking at Liberty Landing on the New Jersey side. The couple then completed the cruise down to Florida, and afterward decided that they needed a larger platform, one to expand their cruising dreams, possibly across the Gulf Stream.

The Roverses saw the Galeon 510 Skydeck three years ago at the Miami International Boat Show, and it was love at first sight. The way the side decks fold out to add entertaining space caught their eye.

Galeon Yachts

“It goes from about 14 feet to 19 feet wide,” Adrian says enthusiastically, adding that with the way the boat expands, its usable acreage is “almost like an RV.” Stephanie says that everywhere they cruise, people come by and take pictures of the boat when she’s wide open with the bar stools in place. “It’s just beautiful,” she adds. Adrian says the grandkids love to fish and dive off the side platforms too.

Twin 670 hp Volvo Pentas give the 510 Skydeck a 25-knot cruise speed, which Adrian enjoys, especially when there is nice weather and they can pop out of the Intracoastal Waterway to run on the ocean.

“I can make the trip [from New York to Florida] in two weeks,” he says, noting that he is a Type A individual but still thinks that, on occasion, they should slow down a bit more and truly take in the journey.

Sandals Resorts

North to South

In addition to loving the Galeon’s speed, Adrian likes that its canopy drops down, making the air draft just about 15 feet 6 inches. So the 510 is bridge-friendly — an important feature for the Roverses, since bridges near their home top out around 17 feet.

Adrian and I talk for two hours as he recounts their trek from New York to southwest Florida and over to the Bahamas. He recalls every stop with childlike enthusiasm and mentions the places he would like to visit again, such as Hilton Head, North Myrtle Beach, Virginia Beach and more. Then there is the unexpected, like the night spent at Roland & Mary Ann Martin’s Marina and Resort on Lake Okeechobee while crossing Florida. They happened upon a fine restaurant with a great live band within walking distance of the boat, Adrian says with the excitement of discovering something fun and new.

He signs off with sage advice for aspiring cruising enthusiasts who have yet to single up lines: “You can’t be afraid, afraid to go, to try new things.”

Galeon Yachts

Comforts of Home

Adrian Rovers says one of the things he likes most about his Galeon 510 Skydeck is the 360-degree salon windows. The glass brings in light and provides impressive vistas in all directions. He also says he pilots the boat from the lower helm most of the time. Knowing that he and Stephanie would be cruising to tropical climes, the Roverses tinted all the glass and increased the air-conditioning capacity of their vessel, ensuring that those cool views would come with an equally cool and comfortable climate inside the salon and helm.

Best virgin moscow mule recipe.

Best Virgin Moscow Mule Recipe

Nov 30, 2019

Wherever there are great cocktail recipes, there are equally fabulous mocktail recipes for those of us who enjoy all the style and taste of cocktails without liquor. In this post, we reveal the best recipe for the Virgin Moscow Mule on the internet! Let's get started!

Introduction

A cocktail is essentially a blend of two or more ingredients of which at least one is alcoholic. As of late, cocktails are getting more inventive with upwards of four and five ingredients.

The Moscow Mule keeps it classically simple with only three ingredients that most of us already have at home. Vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice.

The intense burn of the ginger beer blended with the refreshing sourness of lime juice delights the palate and warms you right up from the first sip.

There are a multitude of practical reasons for choosing a mocktail over a cocktail.

This could include health concerns and diet practices. Or, maybe you're the designated driver and don't want to miss out on a fun night with your social group.

Whatever the reason, mocktails make sure no one is left out.

Most will say that a mocktail is simply a recipe for any cocktail sans the alcoholic ingredient(s), but we're going to show you fantastic ways to enjoy a Virgin Moscow Mule without sacrificing flavor or taste.

Ingredients:

  • Sparkling Water
  • Fresh limes
  • Ginger beer
  • Simple syrup

Instructions:

  • You can either muddle a couple of fresh limes or use freshly squeezed lime juice. We won't tell if you decide to do both ;)
  • Next, combine your favorite sparkling water and a splash of ginger beer
  • Add a serving of simple syrup (1 part water, 1 part sugar)
  • Stir. If you have a shaker on hand, you can also shake the combined ingredients together, but be cautious when pouring as the turbulence may have created a little extra fizz from the sparkling water.
  • Pour over ice

With this excellent non-alcoholic version of the Moscow Mule, you can have guilt-free seconds or even thirds!

Moscow Muled copper mugs filled with clear liquid ice cubs and lime slices

Health Benefits

Typically, in every 6 oz serving of the traditional Moscow Mule cocktail there are approximately 180 to 200 calories.

One fantastic upside of making a Moscow Mule mocktail is that with the extraction of vodka (say 1.5 oz) you can eliminate around 96 calories, meaning that a typical 6 oz serving is approximately 100 calories or less!

Layers of Flavors

one whole ginger beside four sliced ginger

Now that we've laid the foundations, it's time to explore the variations and wonderful layers we can add to perfect our Virgin Moscow Mule.  With these alterations, your mocktails are sure to be enjoyed by all!

In addition to following the preparation of the basic recipe noted above, we suggest adding a few slices of fresh ginger to the mix.

To fully extract the flavors of the ginger, consider muddling it with your limes. Be careful to strain afterward, unless you want to be sucking up bits of ginger through your straw and set your mouth ablaze!

Coupled with the ginger beer, this is sure to amplify the smoldering tones of the original cocktail's taste.

Be sure to use ginger beer and not ginger ale. Most commercially sold ginger beer, though fermented, is alcohol-free. It differs from ginger ale in the way it is manufactured. The intensity of ginger essence in ginger ale isn’t comparable to that of the essence in ginger beer.

So, if you decide to replace ginger beer with ginger ale, you’ll be disappointed at the silenced flavors of ginger in your drink. Essentially, what you’d be drinking wouldn’t be a Moscow Mule at all.

Take it from us, use ginger beer!

If you would rather direct your variations or additions towards the sweet and fruity citrus flavors of your Virgin Mule, you can switch out the simple syrup for a fruit-flavored syrup.

Use a lime-flavored syrup if you would like to stay true to the original characteristics of the classic Moscow Mule.

If you're looking to put a spin on your virgin mule, don't be afraid to try any berry-flavored syrup for an extra layer of fruity goodness.

Sugar-Free Options

Not everyone is a fan of sugar and all things sweet. With this modification, the recipe can accommodate those of us who are patrolling our sugar intake due to dieting and/or health concerns.

More specifically, if you're counting calories or looking to steer clear of sugar all together, you can modify the Virgin Mule recipe by using sugar-free syrup.

With 8 grams of sugar in one tablespoon of conventional syrup, the sugar-free option is a great way to go. A couple of dollops of the sugar-free syrup is a guilt-free way to enjoy the sweetness of this mocktail without the guilt.

Depending on your location and accessibility, you may or may not find brands of sugar-free syrup.  All the merrier if you can!

If you can’t find sugar-free syrup, another option is to use flavored sparkling water to add some additional flavour to your mocktail.  Some brands of flavored sparkling water are sold in tasty flavors with no sugar, no sweeteners, and no calories. Furthermore, the carbonation in sparkling water will augment the invigorating fizz of the ginger beer.  Win-win-win!

Serving Time

Just because we've decided to forego the alcohol component doesn't mean we're also forsaking presentation. We 're all about balance in life as well as in mocktails. So, if one component of the drink has been removed, another must be added!

And what better place to embellish then in the presentation?

It's no secret that the Moscow Mule is served in a copper mug . There are a variety of reasons why, and one of them is that copper is trusted to maintain a cooler temperature. In addition, the copper adds a "zing" to the flavor of the cocktail with each sip.

Whatever the reason, we can't deny that a Moscow Mule served in a copper mug just looks and feels right. The same is to be said for a Virgin Mule.

Besides, if we’re talking about looks, no one has to know you’re drinking a mocktail if you don’t want them to. The copper mug will keep your secret!

In lieu of serving your Virgin Mule in a copper mug, you can serve it in any bar glass. With so many types and shapes of cocktail glasses, there really is no reason why you couldn't enjoy your mocktail in a highball, an old fashion glass, or even a martini glass.

Whatever you have on hand should work just fine!

Garnish Like a Pro

Add a lime wedge to the rim and voila!

Want to take things up a notch? Drag the lime wedge along the rim of your glass, allowing the citrus to coat the edge. Turn your glass upside down into a plate of salt or sugar.

Extra points for presentation and added flavor with every sip!

For herb garnishes, clap your choice of herbs between your hands to bruise it lightly and release its essential oils and aroma.  Mint works great!

And here's an extra tip. If you have them, sprinkle a few pomegranate seeds on the surface of your drink! However, be careful if drinking with a straw as those little seeds will get sucked right up! It’s also a beautiful addition to your Virgin Mule, as you can see in the photo below.

Moscow Muled copper mug filled with liquid cranberries and sliced lime

We hope this article has been useful in helping to introduce you to the Virgin Moscow Mule! The Moscow Mule is an incredibly versatile drink, so don't hesitate to let your creativity push you to experiment with new variations. And, if you want to take your presentation and style up a notch, make sure to equip your kitchen bar with a few copper mugs !
