introduction to powerboating

  • NSBC Module 1

The Boating Fundamentals skill-builder Powerboating course is your crucial first step to becoming familiar and comfortable with your boat handling skills. Think of it as the first day of Driver's ED.

Just as you wouldn't jump in a car and head out on the highway your first day, it also makes little sense to hop on a boat and expect to figure it out as you go.

On the Water Session

Starting & safety.

  • Centering the wheel
  • Shifting gears
  • Pre-departure Checklist
  • Station Holding
  • and more...

This entire course is taught on the water and will teach you the basic parts of the boat, rules of the water, operating instructions, handling waves & wind, and safety checklists.

Boating is meant to be fun and relaxing, but no one has fun if you have an accident on the water. By taking this course, you can be confident in your knowledge of the basic safety & operating procedures required to run your boat.

Prerequisites: No experience necessary! Recommended Age: 10 - Adult

This skill builder course is Module 1 of a 4-Module study. Completing all modules, along with this online curriculum and test , qualifies you for a Boater Education Certification Card that is valid to rent and operate boats in all 50 States.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do i wear.

– We recommend you dress warm and waterproof. Powerboats can be wet and cold. Wear your wellies and have a wind / rain proof jacket – even on a sunny day!

Do we come back for lunch?

– We usually come back for lunch on both days. But if the weather suits and the trainees are up for a trip, we may take our pack lunches out on the water on day 2 and picnic on a local pier, shore or island.

What is the minimum age?

– The legal age for driving a boat on the plane is 16. So the course are best suited for 16 plus. If you have a 15 year old that is already driving their parents boat, we all them on the course and just miss out the planning bit – you can come back and do that when they are 16 😊

What a great course. Content is perfect..hits all the practical and useful points. Instructors are very easy going and have huge experience. It adds a very practical element to the whole thing. Classroom based sessions are based on practical examples so it's easy to follow and very relatable. If highly recommend these guys.

PATRICK J HURLEY

Sam and his crew organised this course for us in Greystones we had Michael as course trainer, the projection of skills and knowledge was awesome, I'm a great believer in learning and CPD but this was next level stuff. Such a pleasure to be in the presence of such experience. 5 days of reinforced learning. I came away from it feeling truly up skilled. Thank you Atlantic marine training.

SHANE CULLETON

Sam did a great job getting through all the required theory of the course while still making it interesting and fun. We then had hands on practical exercises to reinforce what we’d learned. I would highly recommend this course for anyone looking to get their VHF radio operators license.

PADDY LANGE

The training was provided over three days and met all my expectations. I would recommend Atlantic Marine Training to anyone who is seriously interested in achieving boating qualifications in a manner that will not let you forget the essentials learned.

Powerboat Courses

EDUCATION Through Adventure

Under the expert tuition of our highly qualified staff, we will follow the I.S. Syllabus to teach you how to drive our powerboats effectively and safely. All successful participants receive an I.S.A. Certification which is required by law in order to operate a planning craft.

Introduction to Powerboating Certificate

The aim of this powerboat course is to provide a short practical introduction to boat handling and safety on powerboats being used on all Irish waters. It is ideally suited to anyone new to powerboating and those whose primary role will be as crew on a powerboat. By the end of the course participants will be able to safely and effectively crew a powerboat and take the helm while under supervision.

Introduction to Powerboating €150 per person (One-day Course)

National Powerboat Certificate

The aim of this two-day course is to develop the skills and knowledge that allow participants to safely and effectively skipper an open powerboat by day, on inland and coastal waters, with which they are familiar.

Irish Sailing recommends this Certificate as the minimum level of training and knowledge required before anyone uses a powerboat on their own. In the majority of cases beginners would do this course and the ‘Introduction to Powerboating’ as part of the same three-day course. The certificate can also be achieved through direct assessment by a Powerboat Instructor.

National Powerboat Certificate €300 per person per course (2-day Course)

Safety Boat Certificate

By the end of this course, the successful candidate will have a wide range of boat handling techniques and experience in the provision of safety cover for sailing events. Areas covered will include, towing, assistance with race management, mark laying and the provision of assistance for sailing dinghies (single handed and crewed), sail boards and canoes.

Irish Sailing recommends this certificate as the minimum level of training and knowledge required by the coxswains of boats providing safety cover at clubs, regattas, coaching or courses of instruction.

Safety boat courses are run on demand. Minimum number of participants required.
