Why aluminum? The short answer is it is the best material to build boats with. The longer answer is that over the past two decades we have come to know the material inside and out. We know its strengths and its weaknesses. And the more we worked with it, the more we came to love its characteristics, its versatility and, not unimportant, its recyclability. Yesterday’s coffee capsule is tomorrow’s sail boat.
We have learned from our customer’s feedback, and have kept improving. Today, our customers come to Makkum from as far as Chile and Australia and our yachts can be found sailing literally from pole to pole. Which gives us the confidence that we are on the right track with aluminium.

Aluminum is three times lighter than steel. A lighter hull offers a shallower draught, lower fuel consumption. To sum it up: better overall performance.
Strong and safe
Much lighter than steel (3x) and much, much stronger than composite, aluminum makes it possible to build a yacht that is light, yet strong, and thus safer yacht.
Contrary to steel, modern aluminum alloys do not rust. Our yachts have a bare aluminum hull, and sometimes even superstructure, for a low maintenance lifespan. And if damage occurs, aluminum is easy to repair. This makes aluminum yachts retain their value over a very long period of time.

A new kid in town
Together with Dykstra Naval Architects we are on a journey to develop the smallest Bestevaer yet. A yacht for legendary sailor and the original designer of the Bestevaer series Gerard Dijkstra to explore the waters he never got to explore before: shallow waters. A yacht that would allow him to moor in smaller marinas. Also, with the gorgeous Wadden Sea nearby, he wanted a yacht that was able to dry out. That yacht is currently in development: the Bestevaer 36 S/Y.

Robbins EPB Takes on Fourth Bore for Moscow Metro Project
On 01.02.2017, contractor MIP-Story used the Robbins EPB371 (diameter 6 m), on its fourth bore of the Moscow Metro. The EPB is expected to encounter difficult geology and running sands. The machine will also have to bore underneath an existing railway.
The new 1.9 km tunnel will connect Kosino and Ulitsa Dmitrievskogo stations as part of the new 17.2 km Kozhukhovskaya metro line which will include 8 stations. The line will stretch from central Moscow to Nekrasovka, a remote district in southeastern Moscow. It will also pass through the Vykhino-Zhulebino, Ryazansky, Nizhegorodsky and Ukhtomsky districts. The Kozhukhovskaya Line will run parallel to the existing Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya Line and will intersect with it at Kosino station.
The works are divided into two stages. The first includes the digging by two 6 m TBM of two single-track tunnels between Nekrasovka and Kosino stations.
The second includes the excavation by a 10 m TBM of a double-track tunnel linking Nizhegorodskaya Ulitsa and Yugo-Vostochnaya stations. Click here for more and here to see photos from this continuing project. Visit http://www.therobbinscompany.com/en/ . 07/17.
