Former Crew Found First Yacht Training Academy in NZ

After meeting aspiring crew through her company KNOT Yacht Services and receiving lots of questions, Alice Baker and her friend Courtney TeWhiu noticed a gap in the market for aspiring crew in New Zealand. This led them to start KNOT Superyacht Academy in June 2023.

“We want to give those interested in starting a career in the industry the best opportunity to learn the ropes and landing their first job on board,” TeWhiu says.

Baker and TeWhiu have both have had long and successful yachting careers. TeWhiu has been chief on a 50-meter and had lead service roles on vessels up to 87 meters, and Baker started as a stew on a 43-meter but found her place on board cooking on an Atlantic crossing. Their passion for the industry, desire to share it, and seeing others succeed drove them to start the academy.

KNOT Superyacht Academy offers internationally recognized yacht certification by International Yacht Training, meaning students walk away with credentials that stack up overseas on their resumes. As the industry becomes more and more competitive, it’s important for crew to start their careers with a good baseline.

“What makes our academy unique is the courses we teach are highly interactive,” Baker says. “We provide a mixture of theory and practical that make the courses highly beneficial and enjoyable for the students.”

Currently, they offer a five-day superyacht interior crew course with VHF radio. Starting in 2024, the academy will offer Powerboat level 1 and 2, advanced cookery, Ships’ Cook Certification, food safety and hygiene, operating full-time with each course running at least once a month. While most courses will be in person to ensure students learn the hands-on skills for each course, some will be available online.

They have studied and trained in the manner they deliver the course content, so it’s taught in an engaging and conversation-based learning environment. “The courses’ practical elements are set up as exact replicas of an onboard experience,” TeWhiu says. “We have excursions, specialists, and live Q&A sessions from current Kiwi yacht crew.”

The message they’re hoping to convey is that working on board yachts is a career and a team effort, but if you do it correctly, it can set you up for the future, Baker shares.

KNOT Yacht Services takes care of a fleet of luxury pleasure craft, where students can get hands-on land-based experience keeping interiors up to superyacht standard, plus they have day and extended charters on offer, and crew also work at marine industry events. The academy also provides recruitment and works with overseas agencies that will help place crew in jobs directly from NZ.

Tie A KNOT…Not a LOT!

Most seasoned boaters have mastered a few simple knots which can be easily tied and untied when needed. The three essential knots most commonly used on power boats are the cleat knot, the bowline and the clove hitch. Are you nervous because you don’t know how to tie your lines? No need to stress as these three knots are straightforward, quick to learn and we will explain the how-to part in just a moment. It’s up to you to do the practice part.

One more vital but sometimes forgotten tip is this: never throw a line that isn’t tied to the boat first. I hear a few of you laughing as you recall a time or two when your mate forgot this fundamental guideline.

Take a full turn around the base of the cleat then begin to make a figure eight across the horns of the cleat. First, loop across the top of the cleat to go around and under one horn. Continuing in the same direction to finish the figure eight but before you turn the second horn, twist the line to form an underhand loop that will slip over the second horn. The line will now lay with two parallel rivers under the overhand bridge . If you twist the underhand loop in the wrong direction you make a pretzel. Just untwist and retwist in the opposite direction and voila! The perfect cleat knot.

Look at this photo of a correctly tied cleat knot, watch our video above and practice a few times. When you are certain you have this knot mastered then take a stroll down the dock of any marina. Wow! It is truly a wonder how many different configurations try to pass off as a cleat knot. But now you know the right way.

First let’s make sure we all pronounce this one correctly then we will get the knot tied right too. Think of a hunting bow and arrow and leave off the E. Now say bo’lin like you are from New Jersey and you are knocking down a few pins on a Friday night. Bowlin’. That’s it!

A bowline knot has many uses both on boats and off. The more you practice this knot the more uses you will discover. Primarily we use the bowline knot to secure our lines to a free standing piling in our marina slip. We can create a large enough loop to slip over the top of a piling. For those with cowboy roping skills you may not need to get close when you toss your bowline loop toward the piling but we will stick with using our boat pole to help drop it over the top.

Do not be tempted to take the existing small loop at the end of your line and invert it, choking it around a piling. While that may be the quickest way to secure a line, I promise that it will not be the easiest line to remove when you are trying to leave the dock. And what do you do if your neighbor chokes his line on top of yours? A choked line may need to be left behind in that situation. But if you’ve got a bowline knot then you can simply untie the knot and be on your way.

It is bit easier to watch-how rather than read-how to tie a bowline so we suggest you look at the photos below of a bowline, watch our video and practice. Our favorite way to be sure we have the right-sized finished loop is to start with the line wrapped loosely around our waist. Then proceed to take the rabbit up out of his hole, run him behind the tree then back down his hole. The finished loop slides easily over our head and is ready to go over the piling of our slip…first tied to the boat of course!

Clove hitch

Another popular knot is the clove hitch which also has many different uses aboard your boat. The most common reason we tie a clove hitch is for fender placement…and re-placement when the marina staff tells you the wrong side. But that’s another story for another day.

Place your fender on the outside of the boat bringing the line across the handrail one full revolution. On the second turn bring the line diagonally across the first turn. Continue under the handrail for a third turn but come under the diagonal line and pull taut. You will see a familiar look- two rivers under a bridge! To move the fender up or down you can just loosen the clove hitch and make your adjustments.

To use this knot when tying a line to a piling just do the same as on the handrail. The difference here is that the piling is vertical and a larger diameter than the handrail. This video is a good place to start.

Practice Practice Practice

As with any new talent, it isn’t enough to simply learn these knots. Have a knot tying contest when your friends gather together at the marina. Bragging rights are all you need for a prize. Even if you don’t yet own your boat you can create a skills lab with a small board and attached cleat. Add a few feet of line and you have a great present for any new boater.

Practice creates muscle memory so you can quickly tie a knot …not a lot!

Moscow Knot, 2018

Ever since the first Moscow Knot in 2013  I’ve been trying to make it fit in my schedule and 2018 was the year it did!

After all the preparations, it’s not easy to enter Russia, there were some interesting strict procedures involving stamps, long waiting lines and (once) even a flashlight, we hopped on the plane to arrive in Moscow just in time for the Moscow Knot pre-party and get ready for the three day extravaganza of rope bondage shows and demonstrations.

We shared an amazing room, underground BDSM dungeon including swimming pool, together with Yagami Ren , a more than pleasant experience and exchange.

Day 1 was a relaxed day for us we had no planned shows and could relax in the amazing place that hosted this edition of Moscow Knot, the Mona Club, and got some time for sight seeing the neighborhood.

Day 2 we got scheduled for our first show of the event. This was a Saturday and we were the last act of the day. Seeing the shows that had been before us there was some anxiety. We decided on “ Fleisch “, it went as smooth as it could and received raving reviews , thank you!

Day 3 started with a RopeMarks Ryu workshop and later our second scheduled show of the event. This time it was Yagami Ren who was the last act of the day and RopeMarks was right before him, warming up the stage.

Where “Fleisch” is a big show with a lot of props we decided for something simpler but not less powerful for the second show. I call this one “Kinbaku agura rotate” because it does not get any more kinbaku than this show and the model, well, rotates and I glue her to the suspension beam, very spectacular. I am very, very, very(!) happy that this show was received with possible even more raving reviews than “Fleisch”, thank you!!

After the event we had “ an intimate evening with RopeMarks “, basically a get together where I could share some of my views on (Japanese) rope bondage and European BDSM in general and in return got to hear the “Russian view” on (Japanese) rope bondage and BDSM. This was a very interesting and full evening! Ohw, and there was tying too, because, duh! 🙂

The fun still does not end, there was one more night of fun ahead, the “ after party ” at club Predel, the official closing party of the event. Time to mingle, talk, eat, ohw the food (delicious!) and tie. Speaking of fun, I had some with a Russian blond named Zhenya, there was screaming, I do not apologize, it was fun!

This was my first time in Moscow and we had decided to stay a few days longer and do some sightseeing. There is a large variety of things to see in Moscow but a bucket list thing for me was drinking Vodka on the Red Square. The Red Square we did see (beautiful!) but the Vodka I have to do another time. We also traveled by Metro around in Moscow and stopped at several Metro stations. These are works of art all by themselves.

We experienced that people in general are super-friendly, sometimes communicating with hand and feet because of the language barrier, and always trying to help out and often offering food and drinks (also home made Vodka).

"I started The Knot Agency in 2015 with the vision of offering 'more helpful, can do' outsourced marketing support. 

Our ethos stems from one particular experience in my past life as a busy sales manager.   Having s pent forty five minutes on the phone with our agency of the time to provide details for a press release, I realised I had just written it myself and paid someone else to do so!  

Every member of our team understands the importance of high service levels and taking the initiative to efficiently deliver outstanding results on projects of all sizes.  Yes, we will have questions, but we will never be spoon fed."
