What Is Hippie Hole?

Hippie Hole, Alabama, is officially titled “Martha Falls,” but locals nickname it “Hippie Hole.” It’s a popular swimming hole where you can sunbathe, cliff jump, hike, and cool off on a hot summer’s day.

This is a popular location due to the free parking, free admission, and endless opportunities for fun and adventuring.

This is a tremendously popular location amongst locals; the area can get rather busy on weekends and holidays during the summer months. However, with a little bit of planning, you can enjoy an entire day of adventuring here.

Where Is Hippie Hole, Alabama?

You’ll find Hippie Hole, Alabama, in North Alabama on the Alabama-Georgia border. It’s approximately an hour and a half east of Huntsville, and an hour south of Chattanooga, Tenn. 

This unique swimming hole is a part of the Little River Canyon National Preserve and a short drive from Desoto State Park .

This area offers many nature-centric activities and is a great option to consider if you’re passing through the area.

How Do You Get to Hippie Hole?

Getting to Hippie Hole in Alabama requires a 1-mile out and back hike from the trailhead. The trail is relatively easy and suitable for all ages, but the last 150 feet can be challenging. It’s very steep and requires hikers to traverse rock stairs. The rocks and stairs can be slippery, and you should proceed with caution to avoid ruining your day before you even get to experience the canyon.

Parking for the trail is at Little River Falls. If you’re choosing to visit on the weekends during the summer months, there’s a good chance the parking lot will fill up. Rangers will direct you out of the parking lot, and you’ll need to find alternative parking. You cannot park on the side of the highway; you can be ticketed or towed if you do.

Can You Swim in Hippie Hole, Alabama?

Hippie Hole is a trendy Alabama swimming hole. So, of course, you can swim there. Be sure to bring solid shoes for the hike, a towel to dry off, a cooler filled with drinks (leave the adult beverages at home as alcohol is not allowed), and food for the day.

You’ll want to spend the entire day here swimming and adventuring with your friends and family. 

How High Is Little River Falls, Alabama?

Little River Falls, near Hippie Hole, Alabama, is a 45-foot waterfall. While the park is beautiful any time of year, the winter and spring offer the most intense waterfall views. However, the waterfall is still gushing during summer and fall but less fierce.

While it may be tempting to try to get a view from the edge of the falls, don’t try it. Barriers prevent visitors from accessing the area, and it’s against the law to cross them. The rocks can be very slippery. Rangers have had to rescue law-breaking guests, and deaths have occurred at the falls.

Where Can I Fish in Little River Canyon?  

Fishing in the Little River Canyon is another fun outdoor activity. Anglers will be happy to hear that they can fish anywhere in Little River Canyon National Preserve.

Fly fishing is popular amongst anglers, and one of the most common fish caught in the preserve is the Redeye Bass . You’ll recognize this fish by its intense red eyes and a small tooth patch on its tongue. These fish can reach up to 17 inches long and are exciting to catch.

Is Hippie Hole, Alabama Worth a Visit?

Hippie Hole, Alabama, is most definitely worth a visit. It’s a great option if you’re already in the area during the summer months. Families looking to spend time in nature will love it because it’s a short hike, and children will love splashing around in the swimming hole. It’s a great reward at the end of a relatively easy hiking trail. However, keep in mind that you’ll have to climb back out of the canyon at the end of the day. 

Even if you’re not visiting in the summer months, the falls provide a great view in the cooler months. You can snap some pictures and enjoy a short hike even if you don’t plan to spend the day swimming.

Back when I was a teenager, the “Hippie Hole” was the “Pot Hole” and I was there with all my friends but, I guess it is more family friendly now! Back then children wasn’t allowed there. I have some fantastic memories of that place 😆

It’s crowded and be aware it can be dangerous. Not a place for small children and be aware that if you get hurt it’s a long way back up the pig trail.

One place in particular is Nelson's Redneck Yacht Club, which is commonly referred to as Alabama's Redneck Yacht Club. This outdoor attraction is great for all ages and offers a summer adventure like no other. To learn all about it, take a look below.

Alabama's Redneck Yacht Club is located on Terrapin Creek in the small town of Piedmont. It's a definite must-visit if you're looking for something fun to do this summer.

This outdoor attraction, which has been family owned and operated since 2009, welcomes numerous visitors each year from all across the North Alabama region and beyond.

It offers great kayaking opportunities. The rental price for a kayak is $30, and for a double kayak is $50. All prices include shuttle, paddle, and life vest.

Alabama's Redneck Yacht Club offers a short float, which lasts 3-4 hours, and a long float, which lasts 5-6 hours. All float trips begin at the launch area/boat rental spot. Shuttles run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please keep in mind that long float trips will not be available after 12 p.m.

People of all ages enjoy kayaking Northeast Alabama's Terrapin Creek. Because it's such a calm creek, no paddling experience is required.

In addition to kayaking, visitors of Alabama's Redneck Yacht Club also have the opportunity to camp onsite.

The One Alabama Park Where You Can Feed Alligators

One of the state's best wildlife attractions, Alligator Alley in Summerdale, Alabama, is an animal adventure you won't forget.

Run, don't crawl to South Alabama for one of the state's best wildlife attractions, Alligator Alley in Summerdale, Alabama, an animal adventure you won't forget. This wildlife sanctuary protects and cares for over 600 rescued alligators and is open daily so you can give them a little love, too.

Alligator Alley owner Wes Moore founded the sanctuary in 2004, creating a safe place for alligators who found themselves in unnatural areas and faced imminent danger. According to the sanctuary's informational materials, any alligator over four feet long and determined dangerous to people or their property must be removed. Thanks to Moore and his team, many have found a safe home over the last two decades.

The sanctuary is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with feeding times at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 4 p.m. Final admission is 30 minutes before closing. When you arrive, you can explore the property on your own. You can get a bird's-eye view from a platform and stroll an elevated boardwalk overlooking gators just hanging out in a natural habitat along with other creatures like turtles, bullfrogs, ospreys, and owls.

While staff members interact up close with the gators during the live feedings, you can also participate by feeding them gator chow. The staff will guide you on the appropriate feeding method and happily answer any questions you may have about these impressive creatures.

This is the place for anyone who wants to learn ALL about alligators, from the earliest stages of their lives to maturity. (Did you know the typical life span for an alligator is 50 years?) One revered resident is Captain Crunch, who is just over 13 feet long, weighs more than 800 pounds and is the world record holder for bite strength at 2,982 pounds.

Naturally, new generations of gators have originated at the sanctuary, which also has dedicated viewing areas for the hatchlings. The staff will even help you hold one of the babies before you leave.

As you might guess, Alligator Alley is a huge hit with animal-obsessed kiddos and a popular spot for birthday parties. Even so, people of all ages and walks of life will gain knowledge and a better understanding of alligators and conservation efforts. Looking for more family fun in this neck of our piney South Alabama woods? Be sure to check out Wales West Light Railway & RV Resort in Silverhill, Alabama – just nine miles and a 15-minute drive west from Alligator Alley. The Top 6 Kayaking Outfitters in Calhoun County

It’s that time of year again….kayaking season!  Have you ever been kayaking before?  Those who have ventured out on a lake or creek in search of adventure or a relaxing summer afternoon on the water will testify that it’s a great choice for summer watersports in the Southeast.  You may not be aware of all of the great kayaking opportunities in Calhoun County, so we wanted to share details in hopes you’ll consider getting your feet wet!

Creeks to Kayak in Calhoun County

There’s two watersheds that produce some great creeks for Class 1 kayaking fun.  The first is the Terrapin Creek Watershed, which covers 184,000 acres in Cherokee, Cleburne, and Calhoun counties.  One of the gems of this watershed is Terrapin Creek.  It runs just outside Piedmont, Alabama, and features an 8 mile stretch of slow to moderate moving water that is perfect for kayaking, canoeing, swimming, and fishing.  

The second, Choccolocco Creek Watershed, is located in East Alabama, crossing Calhoun, Cleburn, Talladega, and Clay counties.  One of its most popular creeks is Choccolocco Creek, another option for slow moving water perfect for tubing or kayaking on a hot day.  

Things to Keep in Mind When Kayaking

Generally, the outfitters on the Terrapin and Choccolocco Creeks rent equipment suitable for kayaking, canoeing, or tubing, provide shuttles to and from the put in and pick up points, and provide parking and the shuttle at a fee for those that wish to use their own equipment.  If you are planning an outing, check the weather forecast and call the outfitter.  Some will not operate based on weather conditions, creek levels, or seasonal closings.

The three main pieces of equipment included when you rent are the kayak/canoe/tube, a paddle, and a life vest.  When you rent the equipment from the outfitter, you will usually sign a waiver, and there can be fees if you lose or break any of the equipment.  Some outfitters are more child-friendly than others as far as proper equipment and rules go, so you should always call the outfitter you are considering to see if they have life vests small enough for your children, provide smaller kayaks, or even allow kids under a certain age.  And for folks who like to bring a pet dog along, you should also check the rules first.

It’s important to take note of directions from the outfitter such as where to park, how the shuttle works, and where your journey will end.  Some outfitters overlap in locations on the same creeks, and things can get confusing.  And you may even need to bring a phone to call for a shuttle when your trip ends.

Floats can last anywhere from a couple of hours to six or seven.  It’s important to think ahead and bring some conveniences along with you for your trip:

• Cooler (small soft type is ideal)
• Plenty of water or other drinks
• Bungee cord (to strap the cooler and other items on the boat)
• Water shoes
• Lunch and snacks
• Dry bag or box for car keys or phones
• Sunscreen, hat, etc.

One last thing to keep in mind.  It’s highly recommended that if you want to go kayaking at one of these outfitters, that you call and book a reservation in advance, especially on weekends or holidays.  Some will respond to email or Facebook messenger, but the best way to ensure that your kayaking trip happens is to book at least 24 hours in advance by phone.

Kayaking Outfitters to Check Out

Here’s where it gets fun!  Below we’ve compiled the best outfitters you’ll find in Calhoun County so you can plan your day on the water in style.

  Terrapin Outdoor Center (Terrapin Creek)

Family owned and operated since 1995, Terrapin Outdoor Center is the longest running outfitter on Terrapin Creek.  They also sport an impressive store, where they sell new canoes, kayaks, SUP’s, paddles, PFD’s, and accessories from the top brands in the industry.  Another thing that sets Terrapin Outfitters apart from their rivals is that they offer shuttles to the upper Terrapin Creek as well as the lower, so you can enjoy two totally different courses.

They accept credit cards or cash.  They don’t allow pets or young children, so it’s recommended to inquire for specifics.  They also prefer pre-paid, advance reservations.

Redneck Yacht Club (Terrapin Creek)

The Redneck Yacht Club is a great place for the whole family to put in and enjoy a great day on Terrapin Creek.  Or if you’d like to make it a weekend get-away, they have three cabin rentals and RV and tent sites available.  And in recent years they’ve built up an area coined “The Hippie Hole” where you can relax and buy food and drink at the Creekside Cafe.  It’s open 11am-6pm Saturdays and Sundays, and they sell items like hamburgers, hot dogs, nachos, chips, drinks, and specials.  The Hippie Hole is also the stopping point if you decide on their shorter 3 hour float.  The longer float lasts up to six hours and lets out at a parking lot that is serviced with one of their multiple shuttles (the other serves the Hippie Hole parking).

The Redneck Yacht Club accepts cash only and requires advanced reservations.  If doing the long float, you must put in by 12 noon, while you can start as late as 3pm for the short float.

  No Worries Kayak Rental (Terrapin Creek)

No Worries Kayak Rental sprung up in 2014, and has since become a popular choice for kayakers.  Their put in point is the lovely 7 Springs natural cold spring, which feeds the lower portion of Terrapin Creek with fresh, icy cold spring water.  They offer tenting sites there, as well as RV hook up sites at the Hippie Hole, an area they share with the Redneck Yacht Club.  Other amenities they offer are a new full bathroom and private showers, an outdoor shower, and rinsing for your private boats.  Credit cards and cash are accepted, and advanced reservations recommended.

Choccolocco Kayak (Choccolocco Creek)

If you’re looking for a nice, easy-going float down Choccolocco Creek, then visit Choccolocco Kayak in Oxford, Alabama.  They feature a gentle two hour float that begins near Cider Ridge Golf Club and ends at their office located across from the Choccolocco Park entrance at the Leon Smith Parkway/Boiling Springs Road intersection.  Rentals are for ages 18 and up, but younger children and teens can take part if an adult is present.  Children under 8 years must ride in a tandem kayak.

Talladega Creekside Resort (Choccolocco Creek)

The Talladega Creekside Resort is unique in that it’s the only outfitter to offer tubing, which is a great family activity.  They also offer kayaking, and the course for both is 2.5 miles long on Choccolocco Creek.  Other things they offer are 10 cabin rentals and 15 RV sites if you’d like to make a trip of it.  They are also located 8 miles from Talladega Speedway, so this is a great camping location if you plan to go to the races.  They require a minimum of 24hrs notice in advance for a reservation to kayak or tube.

Just over the line in Talladega County, you can kayak on Cheaha Creek at Sunnyside Daycation courtesy of Darren Knight, the ultra-popular local comedian who portrays his “Southern Momma” character on comedy stages across the country.  The float lasts about 2 ½ hours and they accept cash only , so plan accordingly.

Hours: Weekends and some holidays 10am-5pm (drops till noon)

With the weather heating up, you're probably looking for the perfect outdoors adventure. Well, I think we have it for you.

We have the ultimate relaxing place for you.

Travel to the northeast Alabama town of Piedmont on the banks of the Terrapin Creek to check out the Redneck Yacht Club Canoe and Kayak Rentals , where fun, adventure and relaxation await you. You can rent a canoe or kayak, stay in one of the cabins, plan a party or more.

It has a prime location.

Located at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains, the Redneck Yacht Club offers kayak rentals for $30 a day according to their website, and canoe rentals for $50 a day. You also can rent a double kayak for $50.

Here's the process to rent a boat or kayak:

After you pay your rental fee, the yacht club will shuttle you from the parking lot to the launch station, where you can spend the day on the water.

And if you have your own kayak or canoe?

That's fine too. Pay the fee to shuttle you from the parking to the take-out area. (The fee is $5.) Remember that the yacht club is cash only.

Each float is around five hours ...

... unless you opt in for the "hippie hole," which is a three-hour float. (So if you don't want to put your kids in a kayak or canoe for five hours, this may be the choice for you.)

Along Terrapin Creek ...

You'll find plenty of places to explore and lots of adventures. There are picnic tables and more set up along the miles-long journey.

Just remember:

To bring a cooler full of drinks and food, plus sunscreen, hats and something to attach your cooler to your kayak.

But it's not just fun on the creek ...

You can rent the club's pavilion, which is the perfect place for a high school or family reunion or general get-together.

If you want to bring your RV ...

There's RV and camper overnight camping (which includes sewer, power and water) available with a fee. There's also an option for primitive camping.

And yes, you can even get married there.

Want a low-key, relaxing wedding? You can rent the pavilion area for your big day.

If you want to up the fun ante a little bit ...

You can rent one of the club's cabins. We're particularly fond of this cabin -- just look at this slide setup.

If you don't want a cabin with the massive slides ...

There are still plenty of others to choose from.

No GPS? No problem.

You'll find a sign for the club on Highway 9.
