Canal boats for sale across France and Europe

What are pénichette boats and why should you buy one.

The Pénichette boat has become the defining boat when it comes to European waterway travel over the last half a century. Perfectly designed to navigate Europe’s canals, the Pénichette boat is created specifically for inland water travel and is defined by its unmistakable line in the water. Locaboat operates the largest fleet of Pénichette boats in all of Europe, all of which are maintained by specialist staff. There are a variety of canal boats for sale in France , Germany and also canal boats for sale across Europe .

Buying a Pénichette boat can have huge benefits, not only for your holiday pleasure but for your overall health and well-being. Let’s take a looks at the many reasons why you might want to buy a used Penichette boat:

  • A boat to call your own! While renting a canal boat can be exciting, actually owning your own boat means you no longer have to rely on certain time constraints and others to dictate your boating holiday.
  • Owning a boat creates the perfect space to share with family and friends on the water. Time spent on the boat also promotes a sense of well-being and can improve your mental health.
  • Buying barges for sale in France or any other European country is not only something that will benefit your holidays, but it is also a financial investment. The robustness of the Pénichette boat means it often keeps its value for many years, and you can sometimes even make a profit with a few boat improvements.

Four stages of securing a canal barge for sale with Locaboat

Firstly, the seller of the boat will provide all the information you need and answer any questions about the boat that you’re hoping to buy. A full appraisal of the boat will be carried out, and any faults will be repaired or exchanged, ensuring it is all in working order.

Secondly, you will make an appointment with one of the bases to view the boat. You can even test the boat before buying it by renting it for the season. If you agree to buy the boat once you have tried it out, the rental price will be taken off the sale price.

Thirdly, a deed of sale is then drawn up and signed by both parties, allowing you to reserve the boat until it finally becomes your property. A deposit should be paid, and then the full balance once the boat passes into your possession.

Fourthly, cast off at the helm of your Pénichette and enjoy endless memorable boating holidays .

What are the benefits of buying European canal boats for sale?

Unlike renting a boat for a weekend or a week-long holiday, buying river boats for sale in France gives you far more freedom and control over your waterway journeys. If you want to stay moored in one place for an extended period of time, you can. If you want to change your plans at the very last second, owning your own boat means you can do this without being held back.

Thinking of your boat as a second home that is also mobile really shows how much buying a boat can really benefit your life. There’s no need to search for overpriced and uncomfortable holiday accommodation when you already have your home away from home canal boat. Similar to having a second home, you can also lend out your riverboat out to friends and family to use. As they are easy to drive and maintain, passing the keys over to a friend or family member is a breeze. Just remember to check if your insurance covers them!

Checks you should make when you see a used canal boats for sale

Boats for sale from Locaboat are well maintained and cared for, ensuring your investment doesn’t turn into an expensive loss of money. There are certain checks and assessments you can carry out when you’re looking for a second-hand French canal boat for sale . By ensuring these things are looked over before you commit to buying a Pénichette boat, you can have the highest quality boat possible.

You should ensure that the boat has been treated for protection against damage from the elements. Sun and water damage on the outside of the boat can go a long way to ageing and damaging a boat’s performance.

It’s also important to make a cockpit check when you’re buying a new or used boat. Sometimes boats will have a double cockpit, with both an exterior and an interior one. It is essential to make sure nothing is missing or needs replacing. This may include installing the latest boat navigation technology, something that will help you while travelling around Europe’s waterways.

The boat’s bedding is also a key element to make sure everything is present and correct. Being able to sleep well while you’re travelling along the canals and rivers is important, and you may want to change it to your style and tastes. Finally, you’ll want to check that the sanitary equipment is all working as it should. Bathrooms and toilets specifically need to be in good working order before a Pénichette can be sold.

Choose from two different types of Pénichette boats

Opt for the classic pénichette if you’re travelling light.

The Classic Penichette is the perfect boat for travelling through rivers and canals. Made famous for their iconic design – they look like the traditional barge – the Classic Penichette is the easiest to manoeuvre license-free boat and is perfect for families or those with little experience. With the ability to hold between two and seven people, this Classic Penichette provides excellent comfort onboard. The Classic Penichette also has a large sunroof that will give you great visibility, especially when the cockpit is raised by two-thirds. Equipped with a large solarium deck, there’s plenty of space to enjoy the European sun when you’re off the helm.

The Pénichettes Terrasse is better suited for larger groups

Much larger than the classic model, the Pénichettes Terrasse offers boaters a large rear terrace and a much larger living room space. Its u-shaped bench allows holidaymakers to sit together and enjoy meals outside. Pénichettes Terrasse can cater for 2 to 12 people, and each cabin has a double bed, a sink and storage space. Thanks to the two opening roofs and a large bay window, that waterway sun can stream into the Pénichettes Terrasse and be enjoyed by everyone on board.

What do canal boats for sale in Europe cost?

Buy a comfortable river boat in good condition.

Locaboat sells a number of Pénichette boats every year in France and the rest of Europe, averaging around ten annually. Many of these models were constructed through the late 1980s and mid-1990s, making them decades old. Despite this, they are so well made and cared for that they’re still in top condition. The boats are not only looked after, but they are also driven regularly and maintained in a winter harbour. Maintaining and refurbishing the boats, they keep themselves in excellent resalable conditions and will continue for many decades to come. Designed to carry five to seven people, these boats are nine to eleven metres long.

Other fees to consider when you’re buying a boat

Along with paying for the actual boat, there are other fees to consider if you’re thinking of buying a boat on the continent. First of all, you’ll need to pay for a place to moor your boat, which is known as a mooring fee. This mooring fee in your home port could cost between €1,000 and €1,500 depending on the port and how often you need to use it. Alongside the mooring fees, you will usually have to pay an issuance fee too. This can vary between €200 and €500/year depending on the level of insurance that you’re looking for. The insurance fee is there to cover three different conditions; repairs, environmental pollution and liability.

For your first outing choose from a myriad of European waterways

Exploring the canals and waterways of france.

Once you have purchased your boat, you’ll have the exciting task of deciding where you’re going to take it for its first outing. Home of the Pénichette boat, France is one the best places in which to put your boating holidays into action. In the north of France, the Bretton region opens up a whole world of boating opportunities, crossing both rivers and canals. The main route through this picturesque northwest countryside is along the Blavet Canal or through the Nantes-Brest Canal.

Being able to travel along the Brittany waterways with a canal barge for sale in France gives you the opportunity to take in all of the smaller and niche-like delights of the region.

Further to the east of the country, the historical region of Burgundy offers up a famous network of crisscrossing canals, vineyards and iconic French towns and cities. A famous wine-producing region, Burgundy attracts those who want to mix their boating holidays with a little bit of gourmet fine dining and wine tasting.

Arguably the most famous canal route in all of France is the Canal du Midi in southern France. Searching for boats for sale on the Canal du Midi France will open up a world of history, famous landmarks and towns and cities that fall out of the imagination and before your eyes. Being such a famous waterway for canal exploration, you will not struggle to find many boats for sale on the Canal du Midi.

Travelling through Germany with your new boat

You’ll also find a large number of canal riverboats for sale in central Europe, Germany especially. Germany has vast swathes of areas taken up by lakes, rivers and canals, perfect for houseboat exploration. One of the premier destinations is Germany’s northeastern Mecklenburg Lake District. Known as the land of a thousand lakes, the German Lake District allows you to explore the pristine countryside, nature and riverside settlements with ease – this can be said about Germany’s largest lake, Müritz. Müritz is situated within the Müritz National park – a fantastic place to get out and explore on foot. The fragrant beech forests of the national park invite you off the boat and onto dry land, an ideal place to hike and explore the Mecklenburg woodlands.

It’s not only the woodlands and countryside of Germany that can be explored by boat. Why not trade the touristic route of the city streets and explore the German capital of Berlin and the towns of Potsdam and Brandenburg via boat. The interconnecting canals, rivers and waterways make stopping off at any of the inner city, and town spots a simple undertaking. This way, you dodge the crowds and traffic that often back up when travelling into the capital.

Known as the Tuscany of the north, the Bradenburg area of Germany is another of the must-see areas when you purchase a canal boat in Germany. Travelling on a northwesterly course, you can explore the open spaces of the Havel River valley. Navigating this river gives you access to the Westhavelland Nature Park.

Where to go when you find a canal boat for sale in the Netherlands

Another nation that is ideally suited to travelling via boat is the Netherlands. A vast network of canals covers the entire country, allowing you to move from one town to another with perfect ease. After finding a canal boat for sale in Holland, you can choose from a string of different routes around the country. Starting from the Dutch capital of Amsterdam, you can navigate your way around the famous canals of the city, stopping to visit iconic attractions such as the Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, Anne Frank’s home and the Heineken Experience.

You can leave Amsterdam in a variety of directions using the extensive canal system. Heading north, you can explore the sparsely populated and beautiful northern reaches of the country.

This includes the famous cheese-making town of Edam and the idyllic Lake Alkmaardermeer where a variety of wildlife can be seen. The nearby Akersloot region is a picture perfect example of the Netherland’s waterways, with picturesque views of rolling farmland and quintessential Dutch windmills.

Heading south from Amsterdam allows you to boat through the heart of Holland and on through Loosdrecht, a landscape dotted with dikes, open water, canals and idyllic lakeside villages. Boating further south from Loosdrecht, you will then come to the town of Utrecht. Known for its medieval centre and tree-lined canals. Utrecht has its own dutch city charm that can compete with the capital Amsterdam.

Go boating through the Emerald Isle

Securing a canal boat for sale in Ireland allows you to travel across the island in style and really take in every nook and cranny of the beautiful country. Covered in all directions by a series of rivers and canals, exploring the length and breadth of the country can be done with ease. The main and most famous route through the country is via the River Shannon, a river that runs through the country and allows you to navigate your way through Ireland’s most picturesque surroundings.

Starting from Carrick-on-Shannon in County Leitrim, you can start your journey along the Shannon River, going in a northerly direction. First arriving at Keshcarrigan, boaters will notice a quintessential idyllic Irish village, with an ancient pagan burial site overlooking the nearby lough. Continuing north, you’ll eventually arrive at the town of Ballinamore.

Ballinamore has a traditional beauty to it, one that makes it a perfect stopping off point on your journey down the river. With charming Irish houses and green flowery gardens, there is so much to enjoy in Ballinamore.

Moving further on, you will eventually arrive at the border regions of Ireland and the UK near Leitrim. This border region is renowned for its stunning beauty and delightful fishing spots. Close to this region is the Lough Key Forest Park, a stunning lough surrounded by an 800-hectare park. The water itself is part of local legend and myth, with the lake being named after a druid named Cé, who drowned here during the formation of the lake. Getting out of the boat and exploring the wider park will reward you with views of Myriad Islands; Castle Island, which houses a medieval castle, Stag Island, Bullock Island, Drummond Island and more.

ABOUT RIVER BOATS

River boats cover a broad spectrum of vessels, from small fishing skiffs to large houseboats . When searching for used river boats for sale, consider the best size and style for the river conditions. Narrow search results by brand, location, or price point to find the best-suited used river boat.

Main Characteristics of River Boats

River boats come in all shapes and sizes, from the smallest skiffs to large river barges. While the size and flow of the river will impact what kind of boats are most suited to traversing them, what many river boats have in common is their flat or shallow V-hulls. This allows them to navigate shallow river waters with ease. But that doesn't mean that ocean-going boats can't also navigate rivers, and you'll often see sailboats and sport boats on rivers, too.

Whether the boat is being used as a fishing boat, for long-term living aboard, or as a day cruiser will determine what characteristics make it ideal for the role. A houseboat for example, will have ample living space and home comforts, while fishing boats need to be small, lightweight and capable of navigating shallow or marshy areas.

Types of River Boats

River houseboats offer a home on the water and are very specific styles of vessel. They focus on living space and comfort over cruising (they can be either cruising or non-cruising/static styles) and offer couples or families the chance to live self-sufficiently by using features such as solar panels and LPG. They'll usually incorporate several cabins, a full-sized galley, saloon, head, and plenty of deck space. They come in all shapes, sizes, and price points so the market is hugely varied.

The trusty Jon boat offers excellent river daytripping thanks to its flat bottom and tough hull made from aluminum or fiberglass. Suitable for even shallow rivers and waterways, Jon boats can be well-equipped for fishing expeditions. And thanks to their compact and lightweight properties, they can be launched and trailered easily from river slips.

Unlike the Jon boat, a bass boat has a modified V-hull that allows it to cut through rougher waters on larger rivers and river mouths/bays. Bass boats are purpose-built for bass fishing (and often duck hunting), and designed to navigate the shallows and reed-laden shores of rivers and inland waters.

Skiffs , too, land in the category of river boats thanks to their small size, flat bottoms, and ability to navigate tight spots and shallow areas. These are best suited to smaller rivers and waterways, and are typically able to carry a couple of passengers for a day of fishing or sightseeing.

Canal Boats/Barges

In Europe, traditional canal boats , narrowboats , and barges ply the rivers. These long, slim boats are designed with hulls that run efficiently at displacement speeds and don't create a large wake that erodes riverbanks. They have cabins, heads, saloons, and galleys, and the outdoor space is usually on the roof.

Best River Boat Brands

With such a broad spectrum of boats on rivers, there is unsurprisingly a broad selection of brands too. When it comes to Jon boats, brands such as Lund , Crestliner , and Tracker are highly regarded in the industry, as are Lowe , Pelican, and Excel . Many of these brands also build quality bass boats, using their fishing expertise in this different sector. Other brands to consider when looking to buy a bass boat include Ranger , Nitro , and Skeeter .

On the opposite end of the size scale, houseboat builders are constructing large liveaboard vessels designed with all the home comforts for long-term river life. Brands such as Gibson Boats , American Houseboat, and Trifecta Houseboats build modern, luxurious houseboats with plenty of amenities. On the other side of the Atlantic, brands such as Collingwood , Aintree Boats, and Braidbar are just some of the canalboat brands creating traditional narrowboats designed for the narrow canals of Europe and the UK.

Why Choose a River Boat?

While any boat can theoretically be a river boat if the river is deep enough for the boat's draft, boats designed specifically for rivers allow for more activities. Small, flat-bottomed fishing boats can navigate even the shallowest waters and readch some of the best fishing grounds, while large houseboats designed for living on rather than cruising, means many more home comforts and self-sustainability.

Why are River Boats Popular?

Inland waterways offer some of the most beautiful cruising grounds there are, as well as good access to fishing and hunting. Whether a boat is designed as a liveaboard, or is a small aluminum or fiberglass fishing boat, they make popular choices for those looking to navigate on the tranquil rivers and canals in comfort and safety.

The largest country in the world at 17,075,400 square kilometres (or 6,592,800 sq mi), Russia has accumulated quite an impressive reputation. Covering more than an eight of the Earth's land area, 142 million people live there making it the ninth largest nation by population . Still known for its impressive days as the expansive Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), Russia was the world's first and largest constitutionally socialist state. A recognized superpower, the USSR was known for its excellence in both arts and science winning many awards in both fields.

Russia changed drastically after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, but it continues to be a powerful and important nation. It has one of the world's fastest growing economies and the world's eight largest GDP by nominal GDP. Russia is also one of the five countries which officially recognized nuclear weapons states. In conjunction with this title, Russia is also a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, the G8, APEC and the SCO, and is a leading member of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

A European city in a country that lies over a vast part of Asia, Moscow holds one-tenth of all Russian residents . The city is located in the western region of Russia and is the capital and epicentre of political, economic, cultural, religious, financial, educational, and transportation happenings. "Muscovites" , as residents are known, tend to be cultured and worldly. This may be due to the many scientific, educational, and artistic institutions that are based here. An intoxicating mix of the exotic and the familiar, it is the largest city in Europe with the Moscow metropolitan area ranking among the largest urban areas in the world.

The city is situated on the banks of the Moskva River which flows through much of central Russia. Moscow is actually located in a basin for the Volga, Oka, Klyazma, and Moscow rivers. The city of Moscow is 994 sq. km with 49 bridges spanning the rivers and canals that criss-cross the city.

Forests are another part of Moscow's make-up. They coveer over a third of the territory in the region. A variety of animals like elk, wild boar, deer, foxes, weasels, lynx, martens, and birds make their home here.

Located in the UTC+3 time zone , Moscow has a humid continental climate. The summers tend to be warm and humid and the winters are long, cold, and hard. High temperatures occur during the warm months of June, July and August at about 23 °C (73 °F). Heat waves sometimes grip the city anywhere between May to September with temperatures spiking up to 30 °C (86 °F). Winters are harshly chilly with temperatures dropping to approximately 9 °C (15.8 °F). There is consistent snow cover for 3 to 5 months a year, usually from November to March.

Planned Outage for Some Cornell Lab Services

Several Cornell Lab of Ornithology services will be unavailable beginning March 19 through 6:00 a.m. U.S. Eastern time on March 21 . This is a one-time disruption while we migrate more than 1.6 billion eBird observations and additional project data to new servers. After the move, our websites will have improved reliability, stability, and room to grow. Thank you for your understanding during this outage.

Don’t worry, your data (checklists, media, Bird Academy courses, Merlin life list, etc.) will be safe during the migration and will be unaffected when we come back online.

Unavailable: The following websites and services will be down during this period:

  • eBird.org , including eBird portals, eBird Alerts, the eBird API, eBird Science, and data downloads
  • Macaulay Library
  • Birds of the World

Partially affected: Several Cornell Lab projects will remain up but services that require a login will be unavailable:

  • Bird Academy login and store will be unavailable. Users will be able to access most course materials if they were logged in to the site before the outage. Snap ID quizzes will not function during the outage.
  • NestWatch and Project FeederWatch login and data entry will be unavailable both on the website and the app. Please record your data on paper and enter it after the outage ends.
  • eBird Mobile app : The Explore and My eBird functions will not work during the outage. You can use the app to create checklists and then submit them after the outage ends. Your eBird data will be safe.
  • Merlin Bird ID app : Sound ID will continue to work, as well as Photo ID, Step-by-Step, and Explore, using your recent locations only. You will not be able to save sightings, refresh your life list, update your location, or log in to your account. These functions will return when the outage ends and your data will be safe.

Unaffected: The following sites will continue to function as normal:

  • Cornell Lab of Ornithology institutional website
  • All About Birds

This Treasure Hunter’s Latest Find? A 1,000-Year-Old Viking Sword.

Trevor Penny was magnet fishing in an English waterway near Oxford when he pulled out a rusty sword. Experts say it’s a Viking sword that is probably more than 1,000 years old.

A man wearing a blue hooded coat stands in a wooded area. He is smiling at the camera and holding up a rusty metal sword.

By Isabella Kwai

Reporting from London

The long, thin piece of metal looked like a scaffolding pole when Trevor Penny saw it on the banks of an English river last November.

That would not have surprised Mr. Penny, who, while practicing his magnet fishing hobby , has unearthed household items, tools and other metal debris from the waterways near his Oxfordshire home. (Magnet fishing is pretty much what it sounds like: A strong magnet is attached to a rope, which is then tossed into a body of water.)

But his find that day was much more dramatic: a rusty Viking sword that had been there for more than 1,000 years.

The sword, found in the River Cherwell and identified by an archaeological group that tracks public finds, most likely dates to a period between 850 A.D. and 975 A.D. Mr. Penny said he handed it over to the Oxfordshire Museums Service this week, where it is expected to be put on display after restoration.

The discovery evokes a medieval era during which Vikings landed in the British Isles , raiding, plundering and trading their way through England and Scotland. Their incursions did not last, but their descendants still make up part of the British population today. In recent years, metal detectorists have helped unearth artifacts and treasure that had lain buried underground for centuries.

Detectorists in 2007 found a hoard of Viking treasure near North Yorkshire that experts called one of the most significant finds in Britain. Another hoard buried during that era was discovered in 2014 in Galloway, Scotland . But not everyone who stumbles across such discoveries has been immediately transparent: Two men in 2019 were convicted of theft and ordered to pay $1.5 million after they concealed the discovery of an Anglo Saxon hoard of treasure and sold some of the items.

When Mr. Penny, 52, realized what he had found, he contacted a local official responsible for identifying the public’s archaeological finds.

The discovery was “one further puzzle piece that can cast light on our shared heritage,” said that official, Edward Caswell, who documents Oxfordshire finds for the Portable Antiquities Scheme run by the British Museum. More analysis was needed, he cautioned, but experts confirmed that the sword fit with others from that era.

“We do find Viking weapons, including swords, deposited in rivers in England,” said Jane Kershaw, an associate professor of archaeology at the University of Oxford. About 70 such swords have been found in Britain, she said, and while Mr. Penny’s sword might have been dropped by accident, they were also often intentionally thrown in waterways as part of a ritual.

“Rivers were seen as gateways to other worlds, where gods and other creatures or spirits might live,” she said, adding that archaeologists interpreted such rituals as a Viking plea for protection or luck, perhaps in battle.

Many such weapons have been found in the north and east of the country, Dr. Kershaw said. She called the sword a “rare example” of viking activity in the area.

“It is outside the normal find zone for these weapons,” she said. “But the Vikings, they were active in that area. There is a lot that we don’t know about their activities.”

Hobbyists are increasingly making important discoveries, and Dr. Kershaw said it was critical that they report their finds. “It’s hugely valuable information,” she said. “As long as they are recording it, this is having archaeology that otherwise would be lost.”

But who owns artifacts that are found today can be a thorny issue, and can depend on whether they are classified as “ treasure .”

According to the Treasure Act in Britain, metal objects more than 300 years old when found must be reported to the authorities within two weeks. Museums have the chance to claim objects, and finders and landowners may receive a reward, after an object is valued if it is deemed to be a treasure.

Mr. Penny found the sword on land owned by the Canal & River Trust, a charity that manages many of England’s inland waterways. The group has banned magnet fishing on its property, saying that it can be “dangerous” and that sharp objects could cause problems for visitors.

But the charity called the sword an “exciting find,” and it has agreed with Mr. Penny to transfer any potential ownership rights over the sword to a local museum.

Since he began magnet fishing three years ago, Mr. Penny has helped dredge up other discoveries, including old railway tools and a grenade suspected to be from World War II that had to be safely detonated by the authorities.

“It’s a great way to meet people,” said Mr. Penny, who often brings the metal he collects to a local scrapyard. “We get to talk to lots of people passing, who all thank us for cleaning the environment.”

He posts about his finds to a local magnet-fishing group , and so far has no plans to stop.

“I will keep fishing,” Mr. Penny said. “Hopefully with permission to do so.”

Reshaped European footprint, €8bn sale of Vodafone Italy & €4bn capital return

riverboat for sale europe

This announcement contains inside information

Vodafone Group Plc (“Vodafone”) announces today the final step of the portfolio right-sizing announced in May 2023, with a binding agreement to sell 100% of its Italian operations (“Vodafone Italy”) to Swisscom AG (“Swisscom”) (the “Transaction”). 1

  • Reshaped European footprint focused on growing markets, with strong positions and local scale
  • Value-creating sale of Vodafone Italy to Swisscom for €8 billion upfront cash proceeds
  • Attractive valuation, representing c.26x consensus OpFCF 2 and 7.6x consensus Adjusted EBITDAaL 2 for FY24
  • New capital allocation framework, including dividend to be rebased to 4.5c per share from FY25 onwards, €4 billion capital return via share buybacks and new leverage range of 2.25x – 2.75x

“Today, I am announcing the third and final step in the reshaping of our European operations. Going forward, our businesses will be operating in growing telco markets - where we hold strong positions - enabling us to deliver predictable, stronger growth in Europe. This will be coupled with our acceleration in B2B, as we continue to take share in an expanding digital services market.

The sale of Vodafone Italy to Swisscom creates significant value for Vodafone and ensures the business maintains its leading position in Italy, which has been built through the dedicated commitment of our colleagues to serving our customers over many years.

Our transactions in Italy and Spain will deliver €12 billion of upfront cash proceeds and we intend to return €4 billion to shareholders via buybacks, as part of our broader capital allocation review.”

Margherita Della Valle Group Chief Executive

Reshaped European footprint

With the sale of Vodafone Italy and Vodafone Spain, together with the merger of Vodafone UK and Three UK, Vodafone will now focus its operations in Europe on growing markets, where we hold strong positions with good local scale. All telecom markets within the new geographic footprint have been growing over the last 3 years and we will now accelerate our performance where we can create value. In the near-term, the new footprint with the sale of Vodafone Spain and Vodafone Italy, will also result in a step-up of Vodafone Group ROCE of more than 1 percentage point.

The change in geographic footprint will not be the only shift for Vodafone. As previously communicated, our biggest growth opportunity is in B2B. Demand for digital services is strong and we are particularly well positioned to support SMEs and Public Sector customers, as their strategic partner in transitioning to the Cloud and generative AI. Our B2B service revenue growth already reached 5% in Q3 FY24 and we are gaining share against all our primary competitors. We intend to further strengthen our range of platforms and capabilities through dedicated investments and new partnerships (e.g. Microsoft). From 1 April 2024, our new IoT company will focus on extending our current global leadership position by entering new markets and creating a platform-as-a-service offering to support other telcos.

In Africa, we will continue to drive growth at attractive returns through mobile connectivity, fixed connectivity and financial services. In mobile, we are market leaders across our footprint. In fixed, there is a significant opportunity to reach a wider share of the population. Our leading FinTech platform is already serving more than 75 million customers with double digit growth.

Across the whole Group, we will continue to drive operational excellence through our priorities of Customers, Simplicity and Growth. Refocusing our resources towards improving our customers’ experience is already delivering improvements in customer satisfaction and increasing customer loyalty. We will also continue to simplify our operations and execute on our cost programmes to improve productivity.

To better serve our own markets and telecoms partners (such as Swisscom in Italy and Zegona in Spain), from 1 April 2024, the majority of our central operations will begin to move to a fully commercial model. This programme is expected to complete in FY25 and allow us to respond flexibly and efficiently to changes in demand. We are opening our platforms and services to third parties, offering them the opportunity to access our shared operations such as procurement, roaming, IoT and other business platforms.

From 1 April 2024, we will also be changing our organisation to better execute on our strategic priorities within the new footprint. We will be organising ourselves in five business divisions: Germany; European Markets; Africa; Vodafone Business; and Vodafone Investments. The structure of the Vodafone Group Executive Committee will change accordingly, and in this context, Philippe Rogge will step down from his position as CEO Vodafone Germany and will leave Vodafone. Further information is provided in Appendix I.

Sale of Vodafone Italy transaction summary

Vodafone has entered into a binding agreement to sell Vodafone Italy to Swisscom for an enterprise value of €8 billion. The Transaction follows an extended period of engagement with several counterparties to explore market consolidation options in Italy. Highlights of the Transaction include:

  • values Vodafone Italy at a multiple of c.26x consensus OpFCF 2 and 7.6x consensus Adjusted EBITDAaL 2 for FY24, representing a premium to the Group’s trading multiple;
  • values Vodafone Italy at the highest OpFCF 2 multiple of any Vodafone market transaction of the last 10 years;
  • delivers the best combination of value creation, transaction certainty and upfront cash proceeds; and
  • provides Vodafone with a full exit from Italy, where it was not possible to achieve ROCE in excess of cost of capital.

As part of the Transaction, Vodafone and Swisscom have agreed that Vodafone will continue to provide certain services (the “Group Services”) to Swisscom for up to 5 years. The annual charge for the Group Services to be paid by Swisscom to Vodafone for the first year after completion is estimated at approximately €350 million, of which approximately €176 million reflect charges currently reported below Vodafone Italy’s segmental Adjusted EBITDAaL.

Vodafone and Swisscom are also exploring a closer commercial relationship to enable collaboration across a broad range of areas, beyond Italy. The key areas of commercial collaboration that Vodafone and Swisscom are exploring include IoT, enterprise services and solutions, procurement, operational shared services and roaming. This is aligned with Vodafone’s strategy to commercialise its shared operations and broaden its partnerships.

The Transaction constitutes a Class 1 transaction for Vodafone under the current UK Listing Rules and is, therefore, as at the date of this announcement, conditional on Vodafone shareholders passing a resolution approving the Transaction (the “Shareholder Approval Condition”). As the UK Listing Rules are expected to change in the summer of 2024 in a manner that would mean the Shareholder Approval Condition is no longer required, the Parties have agreed that should the UK Listing Rules be amended before 30 September 2024, then the Shareholder Approval Condition will no longer apply. Completion is targeted in the first half of 2025. The Board of Vodafone has unanimously approved the Transaction and each of Vodafone’s Directors who hold shares have agreed to enter into a customary irrevocable undertaking to vote in favour of any resolution to approve the Transaction.

The Transaction is also conditional on certain regulatory approvals, including clearance by the Italian Competition Authority. The Transaction is not conditional on the approval of Swisscom’s shareholders.

Vodafone has further agreed that, if the approval of Vodafone’s shareholders is required and the Transaction is not approved at any such General Meeting, and Vodafone subsequently enters into an agreement for an alternative transaction involving Vodafone Italy within 12 months, Vodafone shall pay Swisscom a break fee of €150 million.

Capital allocation review

Vodafone has conducted a broad capital allocation review, considering the investment profile of the Group’s strategy within its reshaped footprint. This review has concluded the following key outcomes:

  • country-level capital intensity to be broadly maintained at existing levels;
  • maintain robust balance sheet with new leverage policy of 2.25x – 2.75x Net debt to Adjusted EBITDAaL, targeting to be in bottom half of the range;
  • FY24 total ordinary dividend expected to be maintained at 9.0c per share and ordinary dividend to be rebased to 4.5c per share from FY25 onwards;
  • targeting total return increase to €3.1 billion for FY25, comprising €1.1 billion ordinary dividends and up to €2.0 billion share buybacks following completion of the sale of Vodafone Spain; and
  • opportunity for further share buybacks of up to €2.0 billion following completion of the sale of Vodafone Italy.

The total net cash proceeds from the sale of Vodafone Spain and Vodafone Italy are expected to be approximately €12 billion, subject to customary closing adjustments. Following an extensive review of our capital investment requirements, the current capital intensity will be broadly maintained by market, which allows for appropriate investment in networks and growth opportunities. A new leverage policy of 2.25x – 2.75x Net Debt to Adjusted EBITDAaL will be adopted and we will target to operate within the bottom half of this range. The new leverage policy supports a solid investment grade credit rating and positions Vodafone to continue to invest for growth over the long-term. Vodafone has a debt structure with a weighted average life of 12 years, and fixed weighted average cost below 3%.

Reflecting the composition of the Group for FY24, alongside re-iterating FY24 3,4 guidance of Adjusted EBITDAaL of c.€13.3 billion and Adjusted Free Cash Flow of c. €3.3 billion, the Board’s intention is to maintain the final FY24 dividend in line with the prior year at 4.5c per share (annual total dividend: 9.0c per share). Following the right-sizing of the portfolio as a result of the Transaction and the sale of Vodafone Spain, the Board has determined to adopt a new rebased dividend from FY25 onwards. The Board is targeting a dividend of 4.5c per share for FY25, with an ambition to grow it over time. The new dividend has been set at a sustainable level, which ensures appropriate cash flow cover and sufficient flexibility to invest in the business for growth.

The Board has approved the capital return through share buybacks of up to €2.0 billion of proceeds from the sale of Vodafone Spain. This is expected to commence following completion of the sale of Vodafone Spain. The Board anticipates the opportunity for further share buybacks of up to €2.0 billion upon completion of the sale of Vodafone Italy. It is expected that the total return to shareholders for FY25 will be up to €3.1 billion, representing €1.1 billion in ordinary dividend payments and up to €2.0 billion in share buybacks. This represents a 23% increase over the expected total returns to shareholders for FY24 of €2.5 billion.

AC Milan’s current and former owners say allegations from prosecutors are false

MILAN (AP) — AC Milan’s current and former American owners each said Wednesday that allegations from Italian prosecutors disputing who runs the seven-time European champion are false.

Milan’s offices were raided by police on Tuesday as part of an investigation by Italian prosecutors into the sale of the Serie A giant.

RedBird Capital Partners purchased Milan from fellow American firm Elliott Management in August 2022, but Milan prosecutors claim Elliott still owns and controls the Italian club.

“RedBird Fund IV and its investors own 99.93% of AC Milan; the other 0.07% are individual legacy Italian investors that are long standing fans of the club. The notion that RedBird doesn’t own and control AC Milan is just false and contradicts all the evidence and facts,” RedBird said in a statement.

“When we took control of the club upon closing, Elliott provided loan financing to RedBird with a term of three years and no voting rights,” RedBird added.

In a separate statement, Elliott said “this allegation (from the Milan prosecutors) is false.”

“AC Milan was sold to RedBird on 31st August 2022. As of that date, the Elliott funds have had no equity interest in, or control over, AC Milan,” Elliott added.

Italian financial police also reportedly searched the homes of current CEO Giorgio Furlani and former chief executive Ivan Gazidis, who held the role from 2018 to 2022.

Furlani and Gazidis are being investigated for allegedly hiding information related to the sale from the Italian soccer federation.

Milan said it is a “third party and extraneous to the ongoing legal action,” adding that it was “giving its full cooperation to the investigating authority.”

Milan could nevertheless be fined or docked points by the Italian soccer federation.

RedBird also addressed speculation that the club is courting new investors in Saudi Arabia or elsewhere.

“There are no discussions with any investor who would have any control in the club,” RedBird said. “RedBird is the control owner of AC Milan and will stay that way.”
