Tauranga is the perfect place for a superyacht

The New Zealand superyacht’s 25th ‘birthday’ turned into a homecoming of sorts when she was recently completely refitted in Tauranga.

S/Y Miss Silver, launched in 1995 (and originally called Sovereign), was pulled up by Vessel Works in Tauranga’s Sulphur Point marine area and spent 10 months in a 50m hangar at Super Yacht Coatings, having a full interior and exterior refit.

S/Y Miss Silver was built by Alloy Yachts in West Auckland and has spent most of her life in Europe. In 2020, her new owners decided to combine a trip to the America’s Cup in 2021 with a major refit.

“At 25 years old, superyachts have major upgrades to all their systems and it seemed appropriate to bring her back to the country where she was built,” says skipper Wayne Avery.

“We knew that the standard of New Zealand craftsmanship sets a very high bar and many people who used to work for Alloy are still working here in the marine industry.”

Wayne says undertaking a refit in Tauranga with Vessel Works was attractive because of the easy access to facilities and trades, as well as the skilled and experienced workforce. “The Super Yacht Coatings shed is world class and the painters there are world class.

“The amount of man-hours involved in such a project cannot be underestimated, and labour in Tauranga is 20 per cent cheaper than in Auckland. In addition, everything is so centralised that vendors don’t have to spend precious working time travelling.”

In addition to a complete repaint inside and out, all of the yacht’s secondary systems, including engineering, electrical, navigation, lighting and entertainment, have been modernised and upgraded with the latest technology.

“She’s better than new now because all the problems and issues that existed before have been fixed.

It’s now a different colour too: its original dark blue case has become a shiny, all-white, silver-tone clasp.

Super Yacht Coatings general manager Ben Steele says this has given the yacht a much more modern look.

“You would never have thought she was more than 25 years old.”

Super Yacht Coatings got involved after meeting Wayne in mid-2020 and showing him their new canopy, which was then nearing completion.

“A big part of the appeal of Tauranga was that they could use the space as their own facility and could almost exclusively use local contractors,” says Steele.

“That’s what the Maritime District was designed for – to increase and expand the maritime industry in Tauranga – and such a project was ideal.”

The Vessel Works District includes maritime business sites, a 6,300sq mooring, deep-water berths for large vessels and one of New Zealand’s largest mobile boat lifts.

The businesses based there cover a wide range of specialisms, from fibreglass to marine engineering, ship painting and timber decking to composite construction, encouraging collaboration between maritime businesses and creating a one-stop shop for customers servicing their vessels in Tauranga.

S/Y Miss Silver completes 10 month refit in New Zealand

The 36m sloop from alloy yachts and dubois marks 25 years of operation with a return to the water in tauranga….

Image for article S/Y Miss Silver completes 10 month refit in New Zealand

S/Y Miss Silver has completed its refit at the Tauranga facilities of Super Yacht Coatings and Vessel Works , on New Zealand’s North Island. Built at Alloy Yachts as Sovereign , the refit coincides with 25 years on the water for the Dubois designed sloop. The full scope of works included a full interior and exterior refit after 10 months in the 50m painting shed at Superyacht Coatings.

Having spent much of its life in Europe, the new owners made the decision to bring Miss Silver home for the America’s Cup 2021. Many other large yachts that were planning the trip, unfortunately, had to postpone due to the pandemic. For those that came, refit offered a means of entry, and a successful large scale project such as Miss Silver has shown the value that the New Zealand refit infrastructure offers.

“At twenty-five years old, superyachts are due for a massive upgrade of all their systems, and it just seemed appropriate to take her back to the country where she was built,” says skipper Wayne Avery. “We knew the standard of New Zealand workmanship set a very high bar, and lots of people who used to work for Alloy are still involved in the marine industry here.”

Avery says undertaking the refit in Tauranga with Vessel Works was chosen because of the ease of access to facilities and trades, as well as a skilled and experienced workforce “The Super Yacht Coatings shed is world-class, and the painters there are world-class,” he says. “You can’t underestimate the number of man-hours involved in a project like this, and labour is twenty per cent cheaper in Tauranga than in Auckland. Plus, everything is so centralised, so tradespeople aren’t having to waste valuable work time travelling.”

As well as a full repaint inside and out, all the yacht’s secondary systems — including engineering, electrical, navigational, lighting and entertainment — were all upgraded and enhanced with the latest technology. “She’s now better than new because all the problems and bugbears that used to exist have been ironed out,” Avery says.

Super Yacht Coatings became involved in the project after meeting with Avery in mid-2020 and showing him their new shed, then nearing completion. "A big part of the attraction of Tauranga was that they could have this space as their own facility, and were able to almost exclusively use local contractors,” Super Yacht Coatings general manager Ben Steele concludes. “It’s what the Marine Precinct was designed to do — to increase and expand the marine industry in Tauranga — and this kind of project was ideal.”

The next step in New Zealand’s border reopening is now set, with sea and air borders effectively open for visitors and vessels from 1 August 2022. After a frustrating start to 2022 for the New Zealand marine industry, in which many stakeholders had felt that the lack of clarity had cost them future bookings, foreign yachts and crew will finally be able to cruise and conduct refit works.

A key element in the Marine Precinct’s development has been the commitment of Super Yacht Coatings and the major vessel projects it has already brought to the site. And the company’s presence is likely to become even more crucial with the long-awaited launch this month of the construction of their massive 1300 sqm paint shed on the approximately 2400 sqm site.

Created by Bay of Plenty boys Regan Woodward and Mark Hanna, Super Yacht Coatings established a worldwide reputation for its superyacht finishing while based in Auckland.

super yacht coatings tauranga

The company signalled early in the planning of the Marine Precinct that it was keen to relocate major operations to the Bay as part of its overall business expansion. It currently has around 45 staff split between the Bay and Auckland.

Phil Wardale, manager of TCC-owned Vessel Works, which runs the hardstand and travel lift, said the precinct’s planners always knew that securing a good painter to the site would be key to its success.

“And they are very good,” said Wardale. “When council selected them as a successful tenderer on the site and brought forward that area into stage one, the council knew it was going to be a benefit to the precinct.”

Woodward and Hanna have a combined 35-plus years’ experience and an international reputation that has helped draw clients to the Precinct and in turn has generated spin-off work for the many high quality marine service providers working both on and off site.

Hitting the sweet spot

The new facility will allow the company to hit its “sweet spot” of providing top quality refits to superyachts in the 30m to 50m range, said general manager Ben Steele.

But it will also be handling smaller and some larger yachts, depending on tonnage, he said.

He added that Vessel Works was working on improving the on-water refit wharf, which could bring large superyachts and megayachts to Tauranga to complete their refits.

“This would be huge for the region,” said Steele.

super yacht coatings tauranga

A major goal was reached this month with the formal beginning of foundation work for the shed, which Steele said will include full, protected, spray and refit facilities as well as office space.

Super Yacht Coatings, which has been operating out of a rented shed nearby, as well as on wrapped vessels on the hardstand itself, ran into a few challenges getting their Building Consent, which was finally approved last year.

It is understood the delays were largely because council had not previously had to approve a spray paint shed on such a large scale and wanted to ensure that all potential environmental and safety issues were properly addressed in the build.

“There have been a few teething problems and stumbling blocks,” said Steele. But the company has still been involved in completing several major projects over the past year, he said.

And now that the consent issues have been cleared up, Super Yacht Coatings was now in a position to begin heavily promoting its services.

Steele noted that Super Yacht Coatings was proud to have helped draw to the Precinct revenue in the millions of dollars for specialist local marine companies, that would otherwise have gone to other regions.

“The precinct is a great facility and we really enjoy being a part of it,” said Steele. “Since the beginning of this year we’ve already noticed momentum building up.”

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

super yacht coatings tauranga

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

super yacht coatings tauranga

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

super yacht coatings tauranga

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

super yacht coatings tauranga

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

super yacht coatings tauranga

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

super yacht coatings tauranga

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

super yacht coatings tauranga

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
