Catamarans are wonderfully spacious and provide ample area for moving around.  Whether it is in the cockpit or salon which spans over both hulls allowing for a larger area inside, the foredeck with the trampoline  for sun-tanning, or the great lounging area on the top deck you will enjoy the variety of ways to spend your day on the water.  Cats are much more stable than their counterparts which can be much better for new or inexperienced sailors who haven't quite found their sea legs yet or those who are prone to seasickness.   Two engines allow for greater maneuverability when in a marina or picking up mooring balls and thus, have gained popularity in recent years.  And, you will love the panoramic views!

St Thomas Yachting: When to Go

A St. Thomas yacht charter is wonderful at any time of the year. Peak season is considered mid-December through April, with heightened interest in charters around Christmas and New Year’s. Summer months offer more tranquility with fewer yachts and visitors.

Cruising Conditions

Thanks to the easterly trade winds, protected bays and short passages, St. Thomas is home to some of the best cruising grounds in the Caribbean. The trade winds provide a steady breeze, averaging between 10 to 20 knots, which pick up slightly around Christmas. Visibility is excellent throughout the year.

St. Thomas is also blessed with beautiful weather. Temperatures hover in the mid-70s to mid-80s for most of the year, before peaking in the upper 80s in the summer months.

Duty-Free Shopping – The best duty-free shopping in the Caribbean can be found in St. Thomas. Start at The Shops at Yacht Haven Grande, where numerous luxury brands have outposts. Dronningens Gade, the main commercial street in Charlotte Amalie, is another favorite destination, with numerous markets and eclectic shops.

Magens Bay Beach – This stunning beach, located on a protected heart-shaped bay, features calm aquamarine waters that are perfect for swimming and kayaking. Parkland abuts the beach, where you’ll find numerous walking trails, an arboretum, and coconut groves. Other great beaches include Secret Harbour and Lindqvist Beach.

Mahogany Run Golf Course – This world-class golf course is nestled between the rolling hills and the sun-soaked shoreline. A must-play course, Mahogany Run might be most famous for the Devil’s Triangle, a three-hole stretch that towers 200 feet over the Atlantic Ocean inlet.

How to Get There

The island is served by an international airport, located in bustling Charlotte Amalie. Cyril E. King Airport offers nonstop flights to East Coast hubs in the U.S., including New York, Miami, Chicago, Boston, Dallas, Atlanta, and Charlotte. Flights are also available to other Caribbean destinations.

Ferry service is also available between St. Thomas and St. Croix, or between St. Thomas and Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.

Hooman Pedram is the owner of three Tap & Still restaurants and Chicken & Bowling. He wanted to start a distillery as an attraction for cruise ship passengers but found his business ventures took much of his time. Meanwhile, the Brugos brothers, Joe and John, were operating Virgin Islands Craft Distillers, a small-batch distillery in the Gregorie East Marina on St. Thomas, handcrafting vodka, rum and gin. They brought in a fourth partner, Mario Austin, a local rental car franchise owner, to form Rock City Brewing Company within the Tap & Still site in Havensight Mall.

The Old Stone Farm House Restaurant is an award-winning, fine dining restaurant set in a 200-year old, restored plantation field house overlooking the lush countryside of St. Thomas.

The once 300-acre plantation stretched from Magen’s bay to Mandahl. More than two centuries ago the Old Stone Farmhouse was the core of a Danish sugar plantation at Estate Lovendahl. The graceful arches, two- foot-thick walls, and majestic rafters are reminiscent of St. Thomas during the days of the flourishing Clipper Ship trade, sugar plantations on lush rolling hills, and the aristocratic mansions of prosperous merchants. ​

Today this magnificently converted farm building is considered one of the best examples of classic West Indian architecture on the island.

Island Transportation

One of the best ways to get around in the U.S. Virgin Islands is by water! In fact, St. Thomas is one of the busiest cruise ports in the Caribbean. Another popular form of transportation is in a car–either renting your own or taking a taxi. In fact, because U.S. Virgin Islands are part of the United States, you don’t need a special driving permit, just a valid U.S. driver’s license. Keep in mind the roads are often narrow, winding, and steep.

If you prefer another form of transportation, you can always take public transportation to popular tourist spots, or go for an adventure with helicopter transportation or a seaplane ride to travel between islands!

The History of St. Thomas

Saint Thomas is the territorial capital of the Virgin Islands, located in the Caribbean Sea. It is an unincorporated territory of the United States and within its 32 square miles holds almost 50 percent of the U.S. Virgin Islands population.

The Virgin Islands became part of the United States in 1917 when it was purchased for $25 million in gold. The purchase was made as a strategic move during World War I to maintain control over the Caribbean and Panama Canal. Post-war has seen a rise in tourism to the main islands including St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John–making it an attractive location for businesses

A shopper’s paradise steeped in history

Home to almost half the population of the US Virgin Islands , and the location of the territory’s capital, Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas is known for its stunning sandy beaches and for its diving and duty-free shopping opportunities.

St Thomas is a busy and cosmopolitan island, which attracts large numbers of yacht visitors throughout the year, drawn here by the natural beauty of its sandy shores and crystal-clear waters, to enjoy the wide range of outdoor activities on offer and to take advantage of some of the best duty-free shopping in the Caribbean .

The capital, Charlotte Amalie, is often the first port of call for those visiting the US Virgin Islands, and its award-winning, full-service marina can accommodate yachts of up to 200m in length. Founded in 1672, the town is one of the busiest cruise ship ports in the Caribbean, but has retained much of its historic character and is known for its Danish colonial architecture, including the 17th century Fort Christian, which is now a museum, and Blackbeard’s Castle, a watchtower dating from the same period.

Charlotte Amalie is a popular duty-free shopping destination, with high-end boutiques lining the pedestrian streets near the waterfront. Jewellery shops are especially prevalent, while watches, leather goods, alcohol, designer clothes and artworks are also available at tax-free prices. You will find more outlets at the Yacht Haven Grande marina complex. 

If you’re coming ashore for lunch, there are plenty of restaurants in Charlotte Amalie serving Caribbean and American cuisine, as well as some excellent seafood restaurants in Frenchtown, just west of the capital. 

St Thomas is fringed with spectacular sandy beaches if you’re looking to simply relax, enjoy the views and go for a swim in the clear blue waters of the Caribbean. Magens Bay Beach, a picturesque stretch of white sand on the north coast, is among the most celebrated in the whole Virgin Island archipelago, while for a quieter, more secluded spot, try Brewers Bay Beach, on the south coast.

St Thomas is a particularly attractive destination for snorkelers, with a number of interesting sites to explore around the coast. One of the best is Coki Point Beach, in the northeast of the island, where the rich coral reefs provide a habitat for numerous fish species. Nearby is the Undersea Observatory Tower, belonging to Coral World Ocean Park, which allows you to view the reef 4.5m below the surface of the sea without getting wet. 

Novice scuba divers will also enjoy the reefs off Coki Point Beach, at a depth of 15m, while more experienced divers can head across the bay to the north coast of Thatch Cay, to discover deeper coral fields, sponges and dramatic drop-offs. The Cow and Calf Rocks, off the southeast coast of St Thomas, is another popular site for both snorkelling and diving, with a network of coral tunnels, ridges and canyons to explore.

There’s plenty to see inland, too, with a number of hiking trails crossing the island, taking in historical sites such as the ruins of the 17th century Neltjeberg sugar plantation, and for the ultimate adrenalin rush, take a turn on the Zipline through the lush rainforest on St Peter’s Mountain.

One of the best ways to experience the USVIs is by sailboat and Blue Dream Charters did not disappoint. We booked a private charter for two days of our vacation where Tommy + Erin showed us some of the most beautiful spots in St. Thomas + St. John. The views were stunning and the snorkeling was so fun. We stopped by a few popular spots and visited hidden gems, learning history + fun facts along the way. Tacos + pizza for lunch were perfect after afternoons spent swimming. Six of us had a wonderful private charter out of Cruz Bay last week. Captain Will was knowledgable and accommodating of our diverse snorkel group, providing close supervision to those who needed it. Jarred (sp?), his first mate, was a wealth of information about the history, landscape, marine life and local culture peppering information into informal conversation throughout. We sailed, visited a couple of beautiful reefs we could not have accessed via Jeep on St. John, and enjoyed a very relaxing day on the water together. Captain Tommy and his crew catered to our every whim as they dodged the rainstorms and found the perfect, quiet, beautiful anchorage where they produced a delicious meal of fresh mahi or chicken tacos with all the fixings. The boat was extremely comfortable and spacious and a wonderful spot to relax and enjoy a special birthday. The margaritas were excellent, and they kept them coming. It was truly a perfect evening. A tour along the North side of St. John makes for a great start to your day on Take It Easy Custom Charters. As we journey along the coast, we can stop at what’s considered to be some of the best snorkeling on the island such as Waterlemon Cay, Maho Bay or Whistling Key.

Home to a super, upscale resort, Peter Island is a great place to spoil yourself. This resort has a pool bar, upscale gift shop and day spa. Dead Man’s Beach is the only beach in the islands with sugar sand, the softest sand on planet earth!

While almost every boat going to the BVI will stop in Tortola for customs, this island is straight up neglected by the day boat community. Tortola has the only beaches left in the Virgin Islands where it will be just you on it!

If you desire your own beach, ask the crew of Take It Easy or Take It Easy 2 for the Tortola charter day trip and the island could be yours!

If you have ventured all the way out to Virgin Gorda, then Cooper Island is a great place for lunch. This tiny island used to be a must stop for pirates and merchants back in the day to get their water and rum barrels repaired. Now it has a great little restaurant and fully-stocked rum bar that serves every rum made in the Caribbean!

So, you want to visit stunning white sandy beaches, crystal clear blue waters and have loads of beach bars to choose from? Then, Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgins Islands is the destination for you!

Home to only 280 people and over 30 beach bars, Jost is the ultimate fun in the sun destination.

You will need your passport and go through customs to visit Jost Van Dyke since it is in British territory. We go through customs on a regular basis so contact us if you have any questions.

One of the farthest British Virgin Islands, Virgin Gorda is home to the world-famous Baths – a series of giant smooth, granite boulders strewn across magnificent white sandy beaches. These boulders lean against each other making cathedral style “rooms” below filled with warm lapping water that surrounds your body and small tunnels to explore. The Baths is truly a unique destination for adventure seekers who enjoy boulder jumping or being off the beaten path.

Buck Island is home to dozens of green sea turtles which are as close to tame as a wild turtle can get. Swim with the sea turtles and see other amazing marine life. Around the corner is an old navy barge ship wreck in 30′ of water, a snorkeler’s dream. Water Island is the Jost Van Dyke of the USVI with two awesome beach bars on honeymoon beach that serve amazing food and drinks.

The Caribbean is known for its clear waters and beautiful beaches. The snorkeling here is amazing, and Norman Island has two such spots.

The Indians are pinnacle rock formations jutting out of 60 feet deep water. Exposed to the currents, a constant source of food nourishes the coral and sea life making this one of the best snorkel destinations in the BVI.

The Caves are the legendary resting place of buried treasure that was the inspiration for the book Treasure Island. Three caves await to be explored teeming with marine life and mystery.

Sailing with Marty was my first experience as an adult sailing off the coast. We had a wonderful trip starting in St Augustine. First, we were given some basic information about the boat and safety, the other crew members and our destination. Then we were off. We sailed up to Amelia Island for most of the day and then docked at Fernandina Beach marina. We had a short walk into downtown and had a wonderful meal. It was also a great way to really get to know the other members of the crew. The next morning we set off and sailed north to Cumberland Island. Once on the island, we explored the ruins, had a nice hike and enjoyed dinner on the boat. The next step was amazing. We headed off into the sunset on the boat and sailed all night. It was truly exhilarating sailing through the night. At all times, I felt safe but the excitement got me hooked on sailing. Marty is honest, helpful, and always cheerful; exactly what you want in a captain.

This past summer my husband and I had an awesome time on Summerwind. The weather was warm so it was a great time sailing to downtown St Augustine and simply grabbing a mooring ball eating a yummy lunch with our family and diving off the back for a refreshing dip. The following day we took the boat several miles out in the ocean with all the sails up, music on in the cabin; a complete escape from work etc. At day’s end we sailed right up to Caps On The Water restaurant for my birthday where we enjoyed a seafood dinner and drinks. We can’t wait to plan another visit aboard Summerwind, It was a complete vacation over only a single weekend. Many thanks.

Sailing with Marty is truly a treat... He and his trusty Yacht are one with the mighty ocean. Years at sea and behind the helm show, and pay off in high seas or calm. We had such a peaceful experience taking in the joys of the sea while sailing with Marty. He was willing to let us take on roles to help sail the boat (and willing to let us fail, too!) We brought along our two little children (2.5 years and 10 months) and they enjoyed playing below deck and seeing the beautiful scenery sailing by. We were grateful for Marty’s expertise, generosity and passion for sailing!

I've sailed with Captain Marty several times and it was a joy. One of the trips was a longer sail from Puerto Rico to Saint Augustine, Florida in May, 2013. We had a great time and I felt totally comfortable with Marty as our Captain. His sailing and navigating experience made me feel very at ease while on the water - he is a safety conscious sailor. I would give the trip 5 stars!

Being a novice on boats, this was a very exciting time for me. Marty and the crew made me feel very comfortable aboard the Yacht. We sailed down the Cooper River, under the incredible Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and into Charleston Harbor. I enjoyed seeing the USS Yorktown and the submarines. The view of the city of Charleston and the historic homes was amazing! Marty is very knowledgeable about historic sites. Seeing Fort Sumter from the water was also a memorable experience. I would rate this sail as 5 stars

Sailboat: From €120/£100/$135 a day up to whatever you can afford, monohull sailing yachts are fun to sail at all points of the wind and an affordable way to get around if your island hopping or finding your own secluded coves or sandy beaches along with longer cruises. Sizes range from those for a couple or small family to a full sized luxury charter yacht.

Catamaran: Luxury catamarans are stable and spacious, with quick sailing performance, and have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Better for larger groups, they have lots of room for water toys, and are big enough for a little privacy. A catamaran charter is easy and comfortable for novices not used to heeling and are loved by families due to their extra space when compared to a monohull. Typically far more luxurious than a sailboat the larger catamarans have en suite toilets and showers in the staterooms as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck.

Power Catamaran: These types of boats are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam also means more deck space and as they don't have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran rental or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter, consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailing vacation with an experienced captain.

Luxury Yacht: Luxury yacht charters are available for either a sailing yacht (sailboat), catamaran or motorboat and will have a crew and host/hostess on hand to cater for whatever your needs are along with a captain who will have a detailed knowledge of your cruising area. On a crewed yacht charter of this kind you get to create your own personal itinerary and will have far greater range than on other boats which allows for lots of variety in how you travel and what you do.

Superyacht: A superyacht or sometimes called mega yacht are boats which are least 24 metres (79 feet) in length up to 180 metres (590 feet) and can either be sailing yachts (sailboats) or motorboats. These types of boats are most frequently found in the Med of Caribbean and due to their size they will have a large chartering area and can typically pick you up from whatever location you require rather than you being required to get to a set marina to start your charter. They are fully crewed with professional staff who will cater for your every need along with a captain who will have extensive knowledge of your chosen cruising areas.

Motorboat: This covers a wide variety of boats from a motor yacht with cabins to a private boat trip for a fishing trip but all of the these are comfortable seagoing boats with a kick of speed should you want to cover a bigger distance on the day.​

RIB: Very much day boats for fishing and day cruising, RIBs are a lot of fun for a day afloat. They can be very quick and are great should you be in a town on holiday and fancy seeing the coast or finding secluded sandy beaches to get away from it all.

Captained Yacht Charter or Bareboat

When it comes to boat rental or yacht charter in St Thomas you typically have two choices - bareboat yacht rental or captained yacht charter.

When using Borrow A Boat you can filter all boat searches to be with or without a captain depending on what you are looking for and below we cover some of the main points to consider for your boat rental.

Captained Charter: A captained yacht charter gives you the advantage of being able to get afloat without having to invest in getting sailing qualifications before hand. For a monohull sailing yacht you will pay €120/£100/$135 plus a day extra for the captain, as well as their food and a tip at the end.

When you get to a luxury yacht or superyacht charter with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of boat rental on your sailing holiday.

In some cases captains will also be the yacht or boat owners (typically day trips) which means they will know all the best secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.

For day trips you will often be able to use a captain as well and prices will vary depending on the type of boat.

Bareboat Yacht Charter: For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the boat while choosing their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can captain these boats (typically up to 54 feet/16.5 metres in length) yourself.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Yacht In St Thomas

If you are on a gulet or captained yacht charter you do not need a license to sail a yacht out of St Thomas. This is also the case where you are renting a small motorboat without a cabin for a day trip around the local islands or beaches.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter, here are some examples of sailing qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will be able to take a bareboat charter out of St Thomas, these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted.

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

​You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat rental before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a captain then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.
