How can i prepare for my course?

Our courses are designed for everyone, so if you arrive to your course knowing absolutely nothing, you'll be in good hands.

However, if you're the type to prepare (and we recommend you do), there are innumerable amounts of free materials and videos online to guide the beginner sailor.

The American Sailing Association has a free Online Sailing Course  entitled “ Your First Sail ”. In this fun and interactive course you will learn sailboat basics, including sailing terminology, commands used at the helm, and how the sails move the boat forward.

What will I need to know for Basic Keelboat?

This course will include 2.5 days of instruction (6 hours for the first two days, and 4 hours on the 3rd day). This format assists learning by providing lots of repetition and time to practice skills multiple times, while not overwhelming students with too much in one go. With small class sizes (max 2 students), you will have plenty of opportunity to sail as the helmsman and then crew. As each day is quite full, we encourage students to bring the following with them for their course:

• snacks / lunch
• a comfortable sunhat
• deck or tennis shoes (white, non-marking soles)
• sailing/bike gloves (optional)

What will i need to know for basic coastal cruising?

Same as Basic Keelboat, this course will include 2.5 days of instruction (6 hours for the first two days, and 4 hours on the 3rd day). This format assists learning by providing lots of repetition and time to practice skills multiple times, while not overwhelming students with too much in one go. With small class sizes (max 2 students), you will have plenty of opportunity to sail as the helmsman and then crew. As each day is quite full, we encourage students to bring the following with them for their course:

In this course, it is assumed that you have some experience sailing already, including basic skills in tacking and jibing, as this course focuses on more advanced skills such as man overboard, anchoring, reefing and heaving-to.

What will i need to know for bareboat cruising?

Same as Basic Coastal Cruising, this course will include 2.5 days of instruction (6 hours for the first two days, and 4 hours on the 3rd day). This format assists learning by providing lots of repetition and time to practice skills multiple times, while not overwhelming students with too much in one go. With small class sizes (max 2 students), you will have plenty of opportunity to sail as the helmsman and then crew. As each day is quite full, we encourage students to bring the following with them for their course:

In this advanced course, it is assumed that you have a working familiarity with sailing basics and some cruising experience (such as anchoring, reefing, and heaving-to). In this course, the focus will be on more long-distance crusing skills such as navigation and weather-window planning, provisioning, and basic maintenance checks.

Accelerate Skills Development

Experiential education, asa 101 course.

Students learn to sail on a boat approximately 20-27 ft in length, designed specifically for ASA 101 classes.

ASA 103 Course

Learn to skipper a sloop-rigged auxiliary powered (inboard or outboard engine) keelboat of approximately 25-35 feet in length by day in moderate winds (up to 20 knots) and sea conditions.

ASA 104 Course

Asa 105 course.

Learn to apply navigational theory and practices for safe piloting of a vessel in coastal and inland waters. This is a classroom-only course and no prior experience is required.

ASA 106 Course

Asa 118 course.

This 1-day course is designed to practice docking in various wind and current angles. Learn basic theory and hands-on docking techniques needed to safely approach and depart in an efficient manner without damage or injury in an auxiliary powered sailboat.

ASA 103/104 Combo Course

This is a 5-day 4-night course certifying students for ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising and ASA 104 Bareboat Chartering. Learn to skipper a 30'-50' charter sailboat during this liveaboard cruising course in moderate to heavy wind and sea conditions.

This 2-day course in Marina del Rey is designed for individuals with limited or no sailing experience. Includes a preparatory online class, a 3 months ASA membership, and a free one day rental on a Beneteau OC30.1 (valid up to 3 months after receiving ASA 101 certification).

Description:

• Learn to skipper on a Beneteau OC30.1 keelboat by day, in light to moderate winds and sea conditions.
• The educational objectives include nautical terminology, sail theory, points of sail, seamanship and safety procedures, basic rules of the road, knot tying, and line handling.

ASA 103 Sailing Lessons - Basic Coastal Cruising Sailing Courses - 2 Day Class $1,100

This 2-day course is designed for individuals interested in continuing their sailing education and improving their boating skills.

• Learn to skipper a sloop-rigged auxiliary powered 35-41ft keelboat by day in moderate winds and sea conditions.
• Learn cruising sailboat terminology, basic boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, docking procedures, intermediate sail trim, navigation rules, basic coastal navigation, anchoring, weather interpretation, safety and seamanship.
• ASA 101 - Basic Keelboat Sailing Lessons.

Coastal Cruising First Aid Courses - 1/2 day class $130

This 2hr online class and 1/2 day class on a boat will prepare you to provide care when it's needed most.

• Be prepared to act when emergencies arise with First Aid courses from the American Red Cross.
• Example of topics covered: motion sickness or sea sickness, how to treat jellyfish injuries, and what to do with a drowning, or a near drowning victim once they are pulled out of water, how to treat cuts, fractures, and internal injuries or falls from elevations in general, injuries from boating related accidents such as propeller cut, winch injuries falling down from stairs, rib injuries, etc.

RPBA 1103 - Powerboat Single Engine $980

This 2-day course is designed for individuals interested in learning how to drive and operate a powerboat.

• Learn to skipper a single engine 22-24' powerboat by day in moderate winds and sea conditions.
• Learn basic technology, parts and functions, helm commands, basic and advanced docking and undocking maneuvers, situational assessment and planning, crew communication and passenger safety.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my lesson?

Our classes are guaranteed to run weather permitting. In case of bad weather, we'll reschedule your lesson to the next available date to ensure your safety and the best possible learning experience.

British naval architect Malcolm McKeon designed Noir for an experienced yachtsman who wants to sail the globe with his loved ones and closest friends. The performance sloop will showcase the Brit’s signature contemporary styling, with a reverse bow for maximum waterline length and a sleek hull for effortless cruising. The vessel will also feature expanses of glass and folding platforms to connect guests with the sea and a flybridge for alfresco entertaining.

Speed, power, and responsive handling were also part of the owner’s brief. As a result, Noir will built entirely from aluminum to reduce weight and increase speed. The yacht will also be equipped with electric drives that provide additional power as needed. The folks at Dutch outfit Rondal will supply the mast, boom, and integrated sailing system. All the deck gear will be black, hence the nickname Noir. The sloop will also be large enough to accommodate a 45-foot tender.

Spanish firm GCA Architects will spearhead the interior design of Noir. Details are rather scant, but designer Josep Juanpere Miret says the living quarters will complement the yacht’s modern exterior. Miret adds that a mix of natural materials and textures will create a “relaxed yet luxurious atmosphere.”

What happened to Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5? Here’s what we know

What happened to Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5? That’s the question on fans’ minds after it was revealed Below Deck Med Season 9 will air following Below Deck Season 11.

Ever since Below Deck Sailing Yacht premiered on Bravo, it has followed the OG show.

That’s the way it’s been for the past four years, except for last year when Below Deck Down Under Season 2 aired after Below Deck Sailing Yacht.

So why all of a sudden is there a switch in the schedule, especially since Below Deck Med Season 8 just ended in January?

Let’s take a look at what we know.

What happened to Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5?

The reason for the change-up likely has to do with the sexual misconduct allegations that came out against Gary King after Season 5 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht was filmed.

Leaked photos revealed that Daisy Kelliher and Gary were back for another stint aboard Parsifal III with Captain Glenn. The two of them returning was music to fans’ ears as they helped make Below Deck Sailing Yacht a huge success with Colin MacRae.

However, a couple of weeks later, news broke that a member of the production team came out via Rolling Stone to accuse Gary of unwanted sexual advances and harassment. Gary was soon removed from the BravoCon 2023 list, making clear Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 could be in trouble.

Unlike when Peter Hunziker was fired by Bravo for a racist post and then edited out of the season, Gary has not been fired from the show. Plus, editing Gary out really wouldn’t be an option because he plays such a pivotal role and makes a good story even if fans don’t like him.

All of this means that what would have been Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 could be scrapped. Should that be the case, a new season of the sailing show won’t air for a long time.

Then again, maybe the powers that be are still trying to figure out how to save the season with Gary, and they just need more time.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht fans share thoughts on schedule change

A Reddit thread devoted to the Below Deck Med and Below Deck Sailing Yacht swap had fans buzzing.

“I would absolutely be okay with a delay if it means not having to watch Gary. I’m not sure I’ll even watch if he’s on it, especially since Colin isn’t. And Glenn the enabler has went from being best captain to #3 now…,” wrote one user.

Another admitted to liking the sailing show with Daisy but could do without Gary and would be fine if Season 5 never aired.

“AS IT SHOULD BE. Bravo needs to learn- you hire racists, you hire sexual abusers, you’re going to lose money. The end.” was another remark.

A different user doesn’t think the season will air and noticed Daisy switched her Instagram bio, so that may be a clue that Season 5 will never see the light of day. There was also speculation that Below Deck spin-offs will soon be combined for money reasons.

“That is a possibility or they’re still editing the heck out of it to reduce his role as much as possible but that has got to be a monumental task. I doubt they’d scrub an entire season but maybe more things have come out behind the scenes we’re unaware of and they have to do what they have to do especially with all the negative publicity they’re getting with Andy Cohen lately.” declared another user.

Along with Below Deck Sailing Yacht being pushed back, Below Deck Down Under fate seems to be up in the air. As Monsters and Critics previously reported, Captain Jason Chambers asked for fans’ help with Season 3.

'One of the single most terrifying things ever': Ontario couple among passengers on sinking tour boat in Dominican Republic

A Toronto couple are speaking out about their “extremely dangerous” experience on board a sinking tour boat in the Dominican Republic last week.

Brock MacKenzie and his partner, Kerri Wolanski, were enjoying a tour of the Haitises National Park caves on Monday, April 15 when they first noticed water seeping onto their boat.

MacKenzie said that he initially didn’t understand what was happening but soon realized the seriousness of the situation, as the boat was approximately 25 minutes from shore at the time.

“I looked over (at Wolanski) and I’m like, ‘how are you getting wet?’ Like I couldn’t figure out where the water was coming from,” MacKenzie said in an interview with CTV News Toronto. “I happened to look around and the boat was sinking.”

MacKenzie said that there were around 30 other people on board the boat at the time – including at least one child and some seniors.

He said that most of the passengers were not wearing life jackets and that crew members “handed out rum” as the boat took on water.

“The craziest part about the whole trip was not the fact that the boat took on water,” MacKenzie said. “It’s that we left and nobody had lifejackets on, there was no safety, nobody talked about safety of this boat, what happens if [the boat was to take on water].”

Boat was taken to nearby island

The boat -- according to its operator Grupo Pinero -- took a blow to its hull on the starboard side, seemingly caused by a floating log.

In a statement provided to CTV News Toronto, the company said that that the captain followed “all the protocols starting with the request for a rescue service, inspection of the ship, and following the rules by everyone on board.”

The company said that after inspecting the boat the captain then decided to take it to Cayo Levantado, a nearby island, while a relief boat was en-route to take the passengers back to shore.

“As soon as the boat’s captain realized the breakdown, he asked for support and followed all the protocols,” the statement notes. 

Crew 'did nothing, they explained nothing'

Grupo Pinero said that its protocols requires all passengers to wear vests at all times but MacKenzie said that no one was wearing a lifejacket during the excursion. He added that over the 40 minutes that it took for the relief boat to arrive and safely transfer passengers, the crew “did nothing” to fit passengers with lifejackets either.

“We made sure that they all had lifejackets on,” he said about the children and senior citizens onboard. “The crew? Have no idea where they were.”

“…This was one of the single most terrifying things ever,” he said.

There were no reported injuries as a result of the incident and the passengers on board the boat all eventually made it back to shore safely.

When they did, MacKenzie said that Grupo Pinero asked passengers to sign legal documents about what happened. The document, an image of which was provided to CTV News Toronto, asked the passengers to agree that there was a “minor inconvenience” with the boat that was “immediately corrected” by the company.

According to MacKenzie, no one signed the document.

MacKenzie told CTV News Toronto that the tour was purchased through an Air Transat representative

In a statement, Air Transat said that they have been reaching out to all affected clients since the incident to offer a refund for the excursion, “and to personally ensure that the resolution of this matter meets their satisfaction.”

MacKenzie said that in the wake of the incident he is considering reaching out to a lawyer, as he’s concerned that the tour operator is not going to make necessary safety changes.

“Chalk it up to life experience or whatever,” he said. “But they’re not going to change what they do until somebody holds them accountable for the fact that it was extremely dangerous, what happened out there.”

In 2013, we were all gifted a new reality show to binge and enjoy: Below Deck . After 11 years, the show is still going as strong as ever due to its unique premise. However, in 2020, we received a shiny brand-new toy to idle time away: Below Deck Sailing Yacht .

The Below Deck spinoff reality series meets the crew members of Parsifal III , a luxury yacht sailing the Mediterranean, as they strive to provide elite customers with a once-in-a-lifetime experience. At this point, we’ve already been gifted four total seasons o f Below Deck Sailing Yacht , but the wait for a new season feels as though it’s been a lifetime . With that said, here is everything we know about the upcoming season, and when exactly this yacht is going to set sail.

When is Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 releasing?

For quite some time, fans believed the new season would debut on Bravo between February and March; however, it seems we might have to wait until late spring or early summer for Below Deck Sailing Yach t’s season 5. This information arose in the comment section of an Instagram post by Captain Glenn himself.

The captain ended all speculation when he responded to a fan asking, “When is the Parsifal due for departure!?” to which Captain Glenn replied, “Not until late spring [or] early summer.” At this point, neither Bravo nor any other crew members have addressed the exact release date, so the release windows remains speculative. But thanks to Captain Glenn, at least we now have confirmation that a whole new season is on its way very soon, prompting us to clear our calendars in advance.

Paddle Club Baltimore sets sail for 2024 season

Baltimore (WBFF) — Paddle Club Baltimore returns for the 2024 season as Baltimore’s only passenger pedal boat.

Setting sail from a new location -- Lighthouse Point Marina, Paddle Club Baltimore offers a one-of-a-kind outing on Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, perfect for celebrations and corporate events or simply as a new way for groups to sightsee from the water.

This year’s season officially launched on April 20.

Powered by Sea Suites Cruises, Paddle Club Baltimore is an expansion of the successful cruises co-founded by lifelong friends Jack Maher and Jack Walten in Washington, D.C.

Following the launch of the Potomac Paddle Club in 2018, “The Jacks,” as they are known, added the Potomac Tiki Club and the Paddle Club RVA in Richmond in 2022 as well as the Naptown Tiki Club, which launched in Annapolis in 2023.

The Jacks were born and raised in Arlington, VA, and became best friends in pre-school because they shared the same first name.

We’re thrilled to be returning for a new season with Paddle Club Baltimore, said Maher in a news release. This year, we're excited to unveil our new launch location at the Lighthouse Point Marina in Canton. Whether you're seeking a unique outing, craving a fresh adventure in your local area, or just eager to make some great memories with colleagues, friends, and family, we can’t wait to welcome you to our new location.

Previously SipAhoy Cycleboats, Sea Suite Cruises partnered with SipAhoy to relaunch the offering as Paddle Club Baltimore in 2023. Launching from Lighthouse Point Marina in Canton, conveniently located near Drift Bar, Paddle Club Baltimore gives passengers the opportunity to explore some of Baltimore’s most popular waterfront spots during a cruise around the city.

The 30-foot catamaran-style cycle boat seats up to 20 passengers and has 10 cycle stations encircling a centralized bar.

Passengers will enjoy brand new seats this year while they pedal at their own pace in tandem. The boat also has a motor when or if preferred.

Paddle Club Baltimore comes equipped with Bluetooth speakers, built-in cup holders, coolers and ice, USB charging stations, and a bathroom onboard.

Each hour and 45-minute rental includes a USCG-certified Master Captain and deckhand.

Passengers can bring their own food and beverages (beer, wine and non-alcoholic).

Pricing for Paddle Club Baltimore ranges from $39 to $54 per person. The minimum group price point starts at eight people.

Designed by Eldredge-McInnis and built by Portsmouth Yacht Co., the Eastward Ho is a compact yet roomy sloop designed for family cruising in comfort. She is a proven design which combines traditional elegance with practical accommodations. Nothing has been overlooked to satisfy both the sailor and the cruising enthusiast. Her generous headroom, two berths, full galley, and enclosed head are unique on a boat of this size. Her spacious cockpit affords seats long enough for an afternoon nap or additional overnight guests. Sailing or under power she is lively and responsive with a motion reminiscent of a much larger boat. Her ample beam and sufficient ballast make her very stiff without sacrificing valuable draft.

Attabuoy  is in need of general cleaning inside and out and some cosmetic work. The keel will need some minor fiberglass work. The sails are like new. The engine turns over, but has not been operated for a number of years. Take a look and you will fall in love!

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. Carnival Cruise ship rescues 27 Cuban migrants on rickety wooden boat bound for the US: report

A Carnival Cruise ship veered off course to rescue 27 Cuban migrants who were stranded on a rickety wooden boat in the waters between Florida and the island nation, according to a report.

Carnival Paradise had just set sail from Tampa when it spotted the desperate US-bound migrants about 20 miles off the coast of Cuba,

The ship set a course to intercept their decrepit craft with the high-seas rescue taking place around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Fox News reported.

The cruise ship was bound for Roatan, Honduras when it spotted the Cubans.

All 27 were taken aboard the ship, where they were fed and given medical checkups.

The Carnival crew notified the US Coast Guard and officials in Roatan.

In a statement, Carnival put the number of rescued migrants at 28 and said the ship was still scheduled to arrive in Honduras on Monday but did not provide additional details.

Earlier this month, the US Coast Guard intercepted a ramshackle home-made boat off the Key West shoreline — and shipped all 16 migrants on board back to Cuba, officials said.

The barely-sea-worthy craft — the bow of a small wooden boat with the rest made of foam — was spotted by an eagle-eyed good Samaritan and picked up by the Coast Guard cutter Charles David Jr. on April 7,  according to a press release .

The migrants were taken aboard the cutter and shipped back to Cuba, the Coast Guard said.
