Jonathan Beckett: The CEO of Burgess on the Current State of the Yachting Industry

Jonathan Beckett joined Burgess at the age of 23, working in Monaco with the company’s founder Nigel Burgess from 1981 to 1983, before moving to the UK to launch the London operation. Under Beckett’s guidance, the company has developed from a “one-man band” into an all-service company, with specialist divisions in all aspects of the superyacht industry and multiple offices around the globe. Jonathan has served on the Board of the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association (MYBA), was President of MYBA from 2000 to 2002, and has also chaired the MYBA Sales Committee. He is a founding member and former President of the Large Yacht Brokers’ Association (LYBRA). In 2016 he received the Leadership Award from the International Superyacht Society. Burgess remains one of the most successful and popular yacht brokerage and charter companies in the world, having represented and orchestrated the sale of many of the world’s most famous yachts, including Azzam, Dilbar, Dubai, Jubilee, Trump Princess, Maltese Falcon, and Cloud 9.

What are your biggest business concerns surrounding COVID-19?

The uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 is one of the major factors challenging us right now. The uncertainty makes any sort of planning extremely difficult—if not impossible. In late March, in the UK, advice and laws were changing daily, if not hourly. Thankfully that has slowed somewhat, and we have all got into the rhythm of social distancing, and as a business, working from home. The biggest concern for us, is, of course, the health and well-being of our staff and their families and of our clients. Following this is our concern of “how long will this last?”

burgess yachts ceo

Lady E, one of the many yachts in the Burgess portfolio.

What is your current business strategy for dealing with the situation?

We are closely following government guidelines across all of our offices, and we have successfully implemented our remote working plan across all 14 of our locations. I was impressed how quickly and able we were to make this happen. I was impressed myself! We continue to be agile and ready to adapt to change. Being a truly global business with a great deal of travel involved—we are well versed at working remotely and responding to clients’ and business requests—no matter how diverse. The global travel industry has had to deal with many significant challenges before and COVID-19 is yet another obstacle to overcome but we are ready, willing, and able to support our clients as soon as they need our expertise.

The global travel industry has had to deal with many significant challenges before and COVID-19 is yet another obstacle to overcome but we are ready, willing, and able to support our clients as soon as they need our expertise.

In the past few weeks we have had a couple of yacht sales, and charters go through, but this is the minority. The industry has mostly come to a grinding halt. Some shipyards in Northern Europe remain open for the time being, but we are spending our time talking to our clients and making sure we are in great shape for when travel restrictions are lifted. We are here to support crew, owners, and clients through this unprecedented time. We have introduced a new COVID-19 cancellation policy for any new charter bookings taken now—meaning that charterers and/or owners can cancel their fully booked and paid for charter without penalty in the need to cancel due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

How do you think things will look in your industry a year from now?

We must all recognize that this situation will change our industry forever. However, our industry is here to stay. All of these yachts exist, and they need to be managed, insured, crewed, chartered, bought, sold, and refitted. It is up to the industry to ensure that change is for the better. We are already doing business in different ways, as the whole company is working remotely. We are constantly finding opportunities to support our clients with enhanced services such as our virtual yacht experiences. We are a strong believer that working hard in times of adversity will stand us in good stead. It is those brands that stand up to be counted that will be the ones that survive and ultimately thrive. We may not have the immediate answers to the challenges that we face but we will work with our clients, colleagues, and contacts to find the right solution, now and for the future.

I think that many business leaders are fully occupied at stabilizing their businesses to make sure that when we eventually come out of this pandemic we all still have businesses to go back to.  On top of that – I think there will be a new “norm” once COVID-19 passes.  The way we do business, the number of people we employ, the amount of office space we need, etc is all under review, and we will come put the other side of this crisis leaner, meaner, and hungrier than ever, but also well educated in how a large team can work efficiently together in a remote fashion.

burgess yachts ceo

Burgess CEO Jonathan Beckett.

What have you learned from other difficult times in the past?

What we have learned over the years is just how important it is to have “fuel in the tank” when a crisis hits. This has not always been the case with Burgess. In the 1980s and 1990s, we were a small, fledgling company living hand to mouth in a cottage industry and we got ourselves into a tight spot on more than one occasion when business dried up and we had no cash reserves.

Today, we are a larger professionally run company. Our finance team has been very astute to ensure we have good cash reserves at all times, “money for a rainy day.” And that rainy day is today!

Also, the importance of diversification—both territorial, across the world—but also by discipline. All of these existing yachts still need to be managed, crewed and insured, and so these three divisions of Burgess are doing “ok” at the moment and provide us with good and reliable income.

Safe–and entertained–at Home: What business leaders are doing with their downtime

Morning routine? Up at 6:30am with my three little girls (ages 6, 4, and 3) for a family breakfast. The working day starts at 8:30am, and the morning is filled with Microsoft Teams phone calls with our strategic board, followed by heads of department.

Currently binging? During the daytime I have the TV in my home office and it will either be on BBC News or on Bloomberg, watching the markets. I like to keep on top of World affairs. In the evening, if time permits, we might watch a movie or a television series on Netflix.

Currently reading? Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons to my three little girls ages 6, 4 and 3.

What are you doing to spend quality time with those you’re sheltering with? Spending a lot of time together as a family is a real treat for me, as I travel at about 220 days a year when we are operating in normal business times. We are all active together swimming, walking, playing tennis, and having family movie nights.

What are you doing to stay healthy mentally and physically? A lot of swimming and dog walking.

Where are you dreaming of visiting once things are back to normal? To our own sailing boat, Agapi Mas . We spend wonderful summers cruising onboard her with family and friends.

Jonathan Beckett: Burgess CEO predicts the future of yachting

Families are key to developing the next generation of owners.

The superyacht industry is an ever-shifting landscape, but few people are as well placed to predict the future market trends as Jonathan Beckett, CEO of international brokerage house Burgess . We caught up with him to get his views on emerging markets, evolving designs and much more…

“I think it’s an exciting time to be in yachting,” he says. “When you look at the number of superyacht owners in the world today and how many of them actually have children, I think there’s great potential to increase their number quite considerably over the next ten years. If they’ve grown up on boats and their family has had boats for a long time, I think they are keen to continue. It’s an interesting market for us to explore.”

Charter is an important avenue for bringing in new clients

“We have been very successful in converting charter customers into owners over a long period of time,” Beckett continues. “A lot of people start off by chartering a boat to see how they go. Maybe the first or second yacht is not quite right for them; it’s a sort of ‘getting to know you’ process. That is a great gateway into the yachting market.”

Burgess currently has more than 100 charter yachts on its books, including the 95 metre Oceanco yacht Indian Empress (pictured above).

Charter clients’ demands are evolving

“High-speed internet is a regular demand, as well as water toys and a six-star service. You can immediately tell if a boat has six-star service, rather than four-star or even three-star,” he explains.

New superyacht water toys are constantly being offered, but Beckett argues that these are not essential for running a successful charter yacht. “I don’t think you’ve got to have anything out of the ordinary. You obviously need tenders, maybe a limousine for getting people ashore dry, maybe a Jet Ski. Do you need to have a flyboard? I don’t think somebody would select the boat purely on that basis.”

Instability and uncertainty will give clients pause for thought

The political landscape is notoriously difficult to predict and Beckett picked out two key areas to focus on: “I think instability in the Middle East and Russian sanctions will have the biggest impact on our industry. Will Brexit have a big impact on yachting ? It’s difficult to say — no-one knows what Brexit is going to do.”

However, these challenges are often just a matter of timing, as he explains: “When there’s uncertainty in the markets, people wait. When we had the global financial crisis, some of our clients did lose money, a lot didn’t, but they thought it was not a good time to be spending lots of money on yachts. I think yachting is here to stay. At the top-end, there are 2,500 superyachts in the world and that number could easily grow by 20% in the next 7-10 years.”

The Asian market is gradually maturing

“In terms of the buyers, when China and Asia comes online that will release a lot of buyers into the market,” Beckett predicts. “In Singapore and Hong Kong, they are laying the seeds at the moment. I think it will be 5-10 years before that market matures. This generation has made their money and are intent on keeping it, but their children will spend a lot of time in the West, more than their parents and they will be the ones that go out and spend it.”

Burgess already has a strong presence in Asia, having recently exhibited the 77 metre Silver Fast (pictured above) at the 2017 Singapore Yacht Show . “We are laying the groundwork for the market that is going to come, as opposed to expecting lots of people to simply make offers on boats,” he adds.

Twin-engine propulsion will remain the norm

With some of the finest designers in the world working on superyacht projects, there is certainly no shortage of ideas, but clients can be understandably cautious, Beckett explains. “It’s quite a lot of money that you’re investing. We’ve built a few diesel-electric yachts, but when you look at some of the smaller diesel-electric boats that have been built, they cost about 10% more to build and they cost about 10% more to sell at the same price as a conventional propulsion system.

“There are people who are straying off the proven track, with things like single engine propulsion systems. Is that going to become the norm in the future? I really don’t think it is. It’s very commendable, but there aren’t people queuing up to do another one."

However, not all clients are the same, as Beckett reveals: “I did have a client who was a keen scuba diver and he said that when the sea gets rough, the best place to be is under the water, as it’s only choppy on the surface. He asked if someone could design a yacht that could turn into a submarine and go under the water when the seas are rough and I don’t think he was joking! I don’t know how you’d do that, but people certainly are thinking out of the box.”

Superyacht owners will always want to be where the action is

“People don’t really want to go exploring,” Beckett claims. “They don’t want to be on their own in the middle of the Pacific or somewhere in South-East Asia, they want to be anchored off St Tropez where everybody else is and I don’t think that’s going to change dramatically.

“When you look at some of the explorer yachts that have been built, they are fantastic but they’ve never been to the Pacific — they’ve hardly been to the Caribbean. I’m a keen sailor and we’re always looking for deserted bays or places we can be on our own, but actually that’s not what our clients want,” he concludes. “They don’t want to be on the other side of the world, away from their family, away from their business, or away from the soccer club they own. They want it to be convenient, not inconvenient.”

Burgess capitalise on buoyant market

After selling four superyachts in seven days, we look at the extent of their success compared to previous years….

Burgess, a leading superyacht brokerage house, has announced that it has sold four yachts in seven days. The sales amount to over 166m in total length and just under 65million EUR in total value (last known asking price). The yachts sold reveal the global scope of the company, with teams in Asia, Palma, New York and Monaco each securing individual sales.

Jonathan Beckett, CEO comments, “The past 13/14 months have been pretty extraordinary – almost relentless in the sales market. Yachts have been selling at really good prices and talks of ‘COVID deals’ was quite honestly a myth. We are delighted with the current sprint to the finishing line of 2021, but we aren’t there yet – still more deals to be done as we enter December!”

Since 2015 Burgess have sold over 10,000 metres worth of 30m+ superyachts. They've sold 213 superyachts in the same time period with the average vessel being 50.4 metres in length. The total value of their superyacht sales since 2015 is 5.27 billion euros. The numbers are staggering, and yet, their yearly average is still expected to increase. The four vessels which were sold in the same week are listed below;

burgess yachts ceo

The first yacht sold was the 55.5m brand new Damen support vessel Time Off, which was recently given to its new owner through the Palma office, which took control of the sale and also represented the seller. Time Off features an accommodation layout for up to 7 guests and 4 staff plus crew. Time Off was on the market for just under a year and was available for delivery from July 2021.

Next up was the 44m Bloemsma & Van Breeman motor yacht Arete. She joined the Burgess sales fleet in March 2021, and eight months later was sold with the Burgess Miami team bringing the buyer and representing the seller.

Moon Sand Too, the 33.9m Feadship Lagoon Cruiser was next to go with the Burgess Asia office representing the seller. Moon Sand Too joined the Burgess sales fleet in August 2021 and was sold three months later.

burgess yachts ceo

The grand finale for an incredibly successful week was the sale of the sailing yacht Ribelle. A firm favourite within the Burgess fleet, this 32.6m Vitters performance sailing yacht joined the Burgess fleet as a whisper listing before the owners became committed to selling at the right price.

burgess yachts ceo

Throughout the past year, and the pandemic, Burgess has seen significant activity in the sales and new build sector as more and more clients decide that now is the right time to get on the yacht purchase ladder. The market has been extremely buoyant since the last quarter of 2020. Data from The Superyacht Agency reveals that the kind of yachts Burgess are selling this year are on average 54 per cent more valuable than the yachts they were selling five years ago. Even though they sold seven more superyachts in 2016 than they have so far this year, the total value of the vessels this year is worth 129 million more.

Despite three of the four vessels sold last week being under 45 metres, the average length of vessels sold is 52.1 metres for this year. Not only is this a testament to the size of vessels Burgess sold earlier in the year, but it also proves the company's burgeoning success in the megayacht market. Earlier this year they sold the 126 metre motor yacht ‘Octopus’. The pandemic years have also proven to be a financial success for the company. Our data shows that they made more money from selling superyachts in 2019 than they did in 2016 and 2017 combined.

burgess yachts ceo

Furthermore, as Beckett highlights, there is still time to sell more yachts. If Burgess sell just two more yachts by then end of the year it will be just the third time in seven years that they sell 20+ superyachts in twelve months. The data further cements their role as a brokerage giant of the superyacht industry.

Interview: Jonathan Beckett, Burgess Yachts

Jonathan Becket v2

Look around at the world’s leading yacht brokers and you would be hard pressed to find one with as colourful and interesting a story as Jonathan Beckett.

Burgess’s CEO and charismatic frontman has weathered many a storm over the last quarter of a century, but his vision and business acumen have helped to transform the company from a passionate but tiny concern of three staff into a global phenomenon in superyacht sales and construction, with a team of 140 working out of 11 offices around the world.

In person, Jonathan - Joff to his friends - is a jocular and gregarious character, a refreshing breath of fresh air in an industry where many play their cards close to their chest. A keen sailor, he grew up on the Norfolk Broads and always imagined he would forge a career building wooden boats after getting his BA in sociology at Durham University. ‘I was never academic but I’m a very hard worker. I had a gap year between school and university and went sailing in the Caribbean on a 55ft Sparkman & Stephens ketch,’ he recalls as he addresses the recent YPY conference in Monaco.

‘When I got back, I wrote 120 letters by hand to all the different companies…yacht brokers, rope manufacturers, sail makers and insurance brokers. I had a letter back from Nigel Burgess, who said: ‘I work on my own, I’m not looking for anybody but do come and see me for a chat.’ And I received another from David Halsey at Halsey Marine, who also asked me to come in for a chat.  He offered me a job as a yacht broker in Athens on commission only.’

Burgess Appoints New Head of Yacht Management

By Jenna Mehdi

International brokerage firm Burgess has announced a new appointment to its management personnel, with the promotion of Ryan Green to Head of Yacht Management.

Ryan began his career at Burgess in 2013 following a 12-year career working on private and charter vessels around the world. His wealth of experience both onboard and off place Ryan in great stead to grow his department in the years to come.

Ryan comments, ‘ Burgess Yacht management has always been at the top of its game and I am truly honoured to have now taken the helm. I have been with Burgess for over seven years and am excited to be an instrumental part of its new strategy. My role will see me heading up the department the core focus of which will remain on customer satisfaction and service delivery across all facets of yacht management including crew, technical, operational, finance and compliance.

We continue to expand our team - now over seventy strong - with management personnel in Miami, London, Monaco, Hong Kong and Dubai. One of the key objectives in our growth strategy is to continually be on the lookout for talent. The organisational structure brings growth and opportunity for the next generation of management professionals with an experienced, senior team providing assurance, support and guidance.’

The Burgess Yacht Management department was created in 1987 following the notorious sale 87m Benetti motor yacht Nabila to Donald Trump, who then renamed the yacht Trump Princess. The superyacht, which was sold in 1991 and re-named Kingdom 5-KR, is still managed by the Burgess Yacht Management team today alongside over 100 of the most iconic yachts worldwide.

Ryan will replace Philip Naylor from his 2-year position at the head of the department during a phased transition in the first few months of this year. The predicted development of this department is evidenced by another appointment, that of Mark Binnie to Yacht Management Consultant. Mark will manage his own fleet of yachts and manage the team of Associate Yacht Managers as well as acting as ‘Burgess Ambassador’ in his new role.

Burgess CEO Jonathan Beckett says, ’I am confident that Ryan will do a first class job in his new role and will lead the Yacht Management Team into a dynamic future .’

The corporate reshuffle indicates the brokerage is steeling itself for a busy and prosperous year, perhaps in compensation for the uncertainty of the last. Burgess has already kicked off a fantastic 2021 with the sale of 67m Damen support yacht Garcon, acting on behalf of both the buyer and seller in the deal.

"I am confident that Ryan will do a first class job in his new role and will lead the Yacht Management Team into a dynamic future." Burgess CEO Jonathan Beckett

SUPERYACHT LIFE

Superyacht broker

Founded in 1975 by Nigel Burgess, renowned sailor and worldwide single-handed ocean racer, he created a company with an obsessive eye for detail that put clients first every time. Today, Burgess is a leading authority in the sale and purchase, new construction, charter and operational management of the world’s finest yachts over 30 metres.

From their original office in London in 1975, Burgess now spans the globe, with branches catering to clients in 14 major locations. The company has been involved with some of the most significant yachts ever built and Chief Executive Jonathan Beckett has led Burgess to its position as the world’s number one full-service superyacht company. In recognition of this, Burgess became the first yacht brokerage firm ever to receive the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2001.

“’Luxury’ is often a term carelessly thrown around – it covers a whole host of things! However, ‘luxury’, when used in conjunction with the superyacht industry, can conjure up quite negative connotations. It doesn’t accurately portray an industry that supports the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people, world over. The end result of a new build is a masterpiece – a beautiful piece of engineering which expertly blends art with science and industry – meaning ‘luxury’ is simply the icing on the cake. I have been fortunate enough to work at the coalface of this industry for over 40 years, and I have seen the changes that have been made and I know we can make the ones being called for in the future. The Superyacht Life Foundation is a great platform encouraging collaboration, innovation, and evolution – only as a team can we work towards our collective goals of a fun, challenging work environment, correcting any misconceptions and, most importantly, a sustainable future. At Burgess, we are fully committed to raising the bar and working hard with industry colleagues to help educate society on our niche but exceptional world.” – Jonathan Beckett, CEO of Burgess

Take a sneak peek at the biggest and most expensive boats at 2024's Palm Beach yacht show

The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.

Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.

These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocked potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.
