No one particularly likes going to the boatyard, but it’s a necessary evil if you expect to maintain a multimillion-dollar investment properly. It’s time-consuming, messy and a downright pain, and you probably have better things to do with your time. However, boatyard visits come with the territory of boat ownership, and it’s much easier to face repairs head-on than to chase gremlins all season long.

Maintaining a fish-chasing battlewagon is a huge responsibility, and the sooner you come to terms with that obligation, the easier your job will be. And the sooner you find a trusted service center, the better your rapport with it will also be. Developing a solid relationship will net you plenty of gains, including good communication, a fair price and a timely turnaround. Your loyalty to a particular yard definitively allows both you and your vessel to perform at the highest level. The days of dropping off your boat with a punch list and then expecting to pick it up after hunting season simply isn’t the case anymore. While modern boatyards do provide project managers and service writers to consult and assist in the scheduling of projects, no one knows your boat like you do.

For captains, the amount of knowledge when it comes to boat-maintenance intervals and problem awareness is wide-reaching, and the more experience he has, the more likely a yard trip will come off without a hitch. However, for new boaters or even owner-operators, finding an independent project manager who is experienced in the inner workings of the boatyard, in general, will help to ensure that your project, no matter big or small, is being looked after in your best interest, especially when it comes to being on time and on budget.

So, if you’re in a new ride, have recently relocated, or find yourself in need of a new full-service yard, rest easy, because we’ve done the preliminary legwork for you. Here’s a list of some of the finest boatyards in the US to help get your search started.

Bayliss Boatyard, Wanchese, North Carolina

At Bayliss Boatworks , continual improvement is a way of life. Over the past 20 years, the Bayliss team has grown to 115 dedicated craftsmen, and the facility has grown to a 7-acre campus with the purpose of meeting the needs of modern sport-fishing vessels. Bayliss insists on delivering the highest-quality experience to the owner for every new build, and it’s with this same philosophy that every yard project is undertaken.

Located on that same campus, Bayliss Boatyard shares access to the design team, the craftsmen and the facilities responsible for Bayliss’ new builds. With all trades in-house—design and engineering, hull and exterior-carpentry crews, ABYC-certified electrical and mechanical technicians, a full interior cabinetry shop, metalworks, digital-fabrication shop, an experienced paint crew, and a brand-new state-of-the-art paint facility—Bayliss Boatyard can take on any yard project, specializing in those that require advanced design, coordination, and attention to detail such as repowers, Seakeeper and sonar installs, interior remodels, and full paint jobs.

Safe Harbor Bluewater Yacht Yards, Multiple Locations

Whether you’re prepping for a busy tournament season or just getting set for a summer of family fun, you need reliable service options with expert support and quick turnaround times. With multiple locations along the East Coast, Safe Harbor Bluewater Yacht Yards takes that commitment to quality service as seriously as anyone. The service centers began as a support arm for their founding yacht-sales business but now has grown to become one of the largest yacht-service operations in the industry.

Safe Harbor Bluewater in Hampton, Virginia, sits just off the Chesapeake Bay, adjacent to the 200-plus-slip Bluewater Yachting Center, which opened in 2002. The Bluewater main yard opened in 1977 and now includes two modern, state-of-the-art full-service yacht yards. In 2005, Bluewater expanded with Safe Harbor Outer Banks in Wanchese, North Carolina. Then, in 2020, they opened a third location to serve the Upper Chesapeake in the historic Eastport area of Annapolis, Maryland. This newest facility, located at the South Annapolis Yacht Centre, offers service access via a deepwater haulout well and a 75-ton travel lift, along with easy-access service bays and the company’s signature concierge Bluewater services.

Since its inception, marine service has been a primary focus and function for Safe Harbor Bluewater. Initially focused on rigging, repairing, and maintaining the recreational yachts that comprised their initial dealership support, solid diversification and steady growth over the years ensured expansion into all aspects of marine services. Safe Harbor Bluewater’s extensive facilities maintain full capabilities across the board, including engines, welding, machinist, metalwork, woodwork, composite-work, mechanical, electrical, electronic, and complete rigging up to and including total custom construction.

Duffie Boatworks Service Center, Ocean City, Maryland

Having been born into a family of boaters and fishermen in Ocean City, Maryland, Jon Duffie has been on the water since he was 2 years old. By the time he was 16, he was completely comfortable navigating and running any vessel, from a skiff to a large sport-fisher. Always willing to learn from anyone who would offer their time, he quickly gained a reputation as a captain; as his fishing experience grew, so did his knowledge of boats. Duffie learned how the design and layout of a boat is critical to being able to perform proper maintenance, and how this goes hand in hand with better fishing performance and ease of use. In addition to building boats, he became an expert at repairing them as well. When he founded Duffie Boatworks , he knew that service would be a key component to the success of the business. Today, his service department specializes in everything from basic maintenance to complete repowers, offering comprehensive marine services that are designed to meet all the needs of their customers. Projects include teak installation and refinishing, gyro and sonar installations, repowers, refits, and electronics upgrades. The service team is highly trained and has a wealth of knowledge and experience working on a wide variety of virtually all custom and production boats.

Hinckley Yacht Services, Stuart, Florida

Most of us wouldn’t equate the name Hinckley with sportboat service, but it seems that the company has managed to take full advantage of the recreational boating and fishing sectors with its ability to service all makes and models. Fully aware that your time on the water is priceless, Hinckley’s business philosophy reflects nothing but “the right way is the only way.” Services such as its Cat 5 Storage plan, where boats are nestled in a 40,000-square-foot climate-controlled storage facility, and complete refits, paints jobs, and concierge services—including mobile services and 24-hour yacht care—are just a few of the benefits you can expect from Hinckley . Conveniently located in Stuart’s Manatee Pocket, access is easy, and Hinckley’s almost 100 years of experience with discerning picnic-boat owners and posh sailors made accommodating sport-fishing boats effortless.

Merritt’s Boat & Engine Works, Pompano Beach, Florida

The Merritt name personifies quality, just as it has for decades in the sport-fishing world. A family-owned and -operated business since it was founded in 1948, Merritt’s Boat & Engine Works is located just south of Hillsboro Inlet in Pompano Beach, Florida. It remains a family operation today, with Roy Merritt running the service program for the yard, which was originally set up to maintain the family’s charter boats as well as the various other working vessels in the area. The boatyard soon became a very active place as the Merritt reputation of quality work and friendly customer relations grew. The personal qualities instilled by Roy and Ennis Merritt in the 1940s still exist in the values of the family, which has enabled the Merritt name to sustain its high standards for more than seven decades.

The yard accommodates all the traditional trades such as mechanical, carpentry, electrical, hydraulic and metal fabrication, while the paint department can handle everything from small paint repairs and varnish touch-ups to complete refinishing. It also offers haulouts, interior and engine upgrades, hull and bottom paint, and much more. Other services include a full-service yacht brokerage in Merritt’s Boat & Engine Works Brokerage, Merritt Marine Supply—a wholesale marine, aviation and industrial supply company—and Smith-Merritt Insurance.

Michael Rybovich & Sons Boatworks, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida

Hands down, it’s hard to beat the white-glove service that Michael Rybovich & Sons Boatworks offers. The premier builder of these lovely custom sport-fishers doesn’t believe that service should end on the delivery date, but rather, should continue throughout the boat’s lifetime. With everything from service and maintenance to refits and repowers, Rybovich offers only the finest industry craftsmanship, and each one of those specialties can be found at its service yard.

This 100-plus-year-old company is rooted in boat repairs and refits, employing only the finest mechanics, painters, carpenters, fabricators, welders, and fiberglass technicians available. The yard-client communication is unmatched, and its rail system assuredly moves boats around the yard, eliminating traditional jack-stand blocking to ensure that your custom chines remain noncompromised from haulout to splash.

Safe Harbor Jarrett Bay, Beaufort, North Carolina

One of the largest full-service yards on the East Coast, Safe Harbor Jarrett Bay offers complete repair and refit services to anyone seeking world-class work performed by only the highest-skilled craftsmen. Occupying a marine park that encompasses some 175 acres and on-property access to dozens of major marine power, product and service providers, motoryachts and sportboats of all makes and models can be easily accommodated. Boasting a deepwater basin and travel lifts capable of hauling up to 300 tons—with many of the service personnel certified by the American Boat and Yacht Council—Jarrett Bay is a trusted source when it comes to servicing your vessel. Whether it’s a bottom job, a complete refit or repower, or even a new paint job in the climate-controlled spray booth, you can be sure that Safe Harbor Jarrett Bay is on it.

Saunders Yachtworks, Saunders Marine Center, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama

The Saunders Companies have provided marine service on the Alabama Gulf Coast for more than 60 years. The full-service flagship yard, Saunders Yachtworks , sits on 14 acres along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway in Gulf Shores. Yachtworks accommodates vessels up to 130 feet and is home to a 165-ton travel lift, the largest recreational boat lift on the northern Gulf of Mexico. Saunders’ original location for yacht services, Saunders Marine Center, is located inside Orange Beach Marina. This facility is able to haul boats up to 70 feet with its 60-ton travel lift. Both yards feature a full-service approach, with in-house employees for all traditional boatyard services, as well as subcontractors for any specialty.

With an experienced management team, a well-rounded technical staff, and flexible workspaces, Saunders is prepared to handle projects of all levels and complexity in-house from start to finish. Master craftsmen specializing in paint, fiberglass, and custom carpentry are available for refit and damage repair, and certified technicians are available for diesel- and outboard-engine repowers, mechanical service, and vessel-systems service. Saunders technicians also operate in the field and will travel to wherever your vessel is docked.

Spencer Marine, Wanchese, North Carolina

Working with sister company Spencer Yachts in Wanchese, North Carolina, Spencer Marine is a full-service boatyard that specializes in servicing custom and production boats, from general maintenance to repowers. Their emphasis is on quality work in a timely manner. With 75- and 100-ton travel lifts and ample wet and dry dockage, as well as a highly trained staff of expert technicians, the Spencer Marine yard is capable of tackling virtually any challenge. In addition to a large paint bay, it also has a custom metal-fabrication shop that specializes in marine welding, including fuel tanks spec’d to size and specialty keyed and tapered shafts to fit each boat’s needs.

Viking Yacht Service Center, Riviera Beach, Florida

Would you take your BMW to Joe’s Brake Shop for service? Probably not, so why take your Viking anywhere but Viking? That’s just one reason this company is so successful—the ability to track, source and repair any Viking at any time, by design. Working off your hull number, the Viking Service Center can track down every single piece of equipment installed on your Viking, with many of the parts stocked on premises, keeping you from running around town trying to find that one thing that only Viking uses. In addition to annual maintenance, retrofits, and warranty and finish work, the yard also provides much-needed convenience services such as hurricane-plan contracts and spare-prop storage. And with Palm Beach Towers and Atlantic Marine Electronics on-site, it’s a one-stop shop for Viking owners and captains alike, especially in South Florida.

Willis Custom Yachts, Stuart, Florida

Armed with a 35-acre facility in Stuart that not only includes new builds but routine maintenance and full-refit services as well, Willis meets clients where they feel most comfortable. Only the highest-quality craftsmanship can be found in each one of the company’s 90-plus skilled technicians, all of whom exhibit unparalleled and intimate knowledge of joinery, paint, electrical, welding and fabrication, engineering design, fiberglass repair, and construction.

Willis believes that clients should have a plan with “a finite scope of work” when scheduling a yard visit because loose work orders can uncover additional problems, which might change the delivery timeline, leading to both overages in time and money, as well as the yard’s workflow and scheduling. So, if you’re willing to bring a good plan, Willis will work with you to execute it in the most thorough way possible.

Lurssen's superyacht Azzam

7. Nobiskrug, Germany

Having just celebrated its 115 th anniversary, Nobiskrug began shipbuilding long before the term ‘superyacht’ was even coined. Drawing on its extensive experience in seagoing vessels, the shipyard turned to yacht building in 2000 with the completion of its inaugural superyacht project, the 92-metre (302-foot) Tatoosh. It has since delivered an impressive portfolio of innovative custom-built superyachts, pledging to work on a single project for a single client to build superyachts ready for the 22 nd century. A big statement of intent.

With two facilities in Northern Germany, the boatyard can currently build vessels ranging from 60 to 426 metres (197 to 1398 feet) in length. Over 1000 in-house employees work across the two sites, where they have developed and built numerous award-winning superyachts, including one of the industry’s most talked about vessels, 142-metre (466-foot) Sailing Yacht A.

2020 saw the launch of 80-metre (262-foot) Artefact. At 2,999 GT, Artefact is now the largest 80-metre superyacht by volume in the world and is one of the world’s first superyachts to meet IMO Tier III emissions regulations.

To date, the group has launched 58 sailing yachts and four motor yachts. Its track record for innovative sailing yachts has seen it set the standard for excellence in the sector, launching more yachts over 50 metres (164 feet) than any other builder. It's responsible for the iconic 88-metre (288-foot) three-masted schooner Maltese Falcon, which currently holds the title of the sixth largest sailing yacht in the world, and other award-winning sailing yachts, such as the 73-metre (239-foot) Nautilus, 70-metre (229-foot) Badis I and 64-metre (210-foot) Spirit Of The C’s.

Established in 1884, Royal Huisman is the only shipyard with two entries in the top 10 largest sailing yachts ever built. The 2020 launch of 81-metre (266-foot) Sea Eagle II was its tenth sailing yacht over 50 metres (164 feet) and its biggest yacht since 90-metre (295-foot) Athena in 2004, which was then the largest sailing yacht in the world. Despite being renowned for its luxury performance sailing yachts, Royal Huisman’s largest delivery in 2021 is expected to be “Project 403 PHI”, a featherweight 55-metre (180-foot)+ aluminium motor yacht under 500GT.

  • THE CHRISTENSEN DIFFERENCE
  • YACHTS UNDER CONSTRUCTION

The Christensen Difference

A YACHT OWNER'S SHIPYARD  Nearly four decades ago a successful contractor named Dave Christensen couldn’t find a rugged, beautifully finished U.S.-built yacht, so he decided to build his own. When he succeeded, he decided he could offer the same quality and reliability to other yacht owners, and so Christensen Shipyards was born.

Today, Christensen continues the company’s original founding vision to deliver  beautiful, ocean-going yachts  to other fellow yachtsmen. Today, Christensen is led by two owners – who have owned six Christensen yachts – and are committed to elevating Christensen Yachts to new heights in quality and the building experience.

With nearly 1,000 man-years of boat building experience under one roof, Christensen offers an incomparable workforce. Each of our 120 boat builders is committed to honesty and transparency to ensure each boat is not only built to the highest quality, but delivered on time and on budget.

When Dave Christensen opened the shipyard he had a sign put over the entrance, “Through these doors pass the finest boat builders in the world.” To which the shipyard’s new owners add: “And the world’s most satisfied yacht owners.”

  • RELIABILITY
  • TRANSPARENCY

RELIABILITY  Fiberglass construction results in significantly less maintenance, freeing the crew to focus on keeping the yacht running like a five star hotel. Metal hulls often result in blistering, rust, corrosion and the growth of mold. Every captain and yacht manager knows that the success of the yacht for its owner and guests relies on its crew. With more crew man-hours available to enhance the yachting experience, a composite fiberglass boat offers a distinct advantage in overall success for the vessel.

COMFORT  Composite hulls are fully insulated, thus eliminating the “double boiler” effect, especially in warmer cruising climates, which in solid laminate and metal boats results in significant condensation that can lead to corrosion, damage of interior finishes and mold infestation. In addition, the foam-cored structure of Christensen construction provides a natural absorption of mechanical and structural energy that significantly reduces shipboard noise transmission and vibration.

STRENGTH  All Christensen yachts are built with the finest composite materials available. Our cutting-edge construction process includes large-scale vacuum infusion coupled with proprietary in-house techniques to create a strength-to-weight ratio seven times stronger than steel and solid laminate. This makes all Christensen yachts true deep water, transoceanic global explorers. The superior strength of infused composite construction is shown in the photo to the right. When balanced between two points on bow and stern inferior construction methods will cause other hulls to buckle as much as eight inches, while hulls built at Christensen have a barely measurable deflection.

TRANSPARENCY   We believe that creative people working together with a common purpose and common goals is the way to ensure superb yachts and happy, satisfied customers. Inspired teamwork is the only way to produce a world-class boat on time and on budget. Cementing that team work is a new ownership that in 2016 introduced an industry-leading profit-sharing program among its employees with a full 1/3 of its annual operating profit going back to the workforce in the form of bonuses. The shipyard's motto is "Whatever it Takes" and every quarter an employee who best exemplifies this philosophy is singled out to receive the company's WIT Award. Shared commitment, shared values and shared profit is a winning combination at Christensen Shipyards and a guarantee of our clients will get the very best from out talented and dedicated boat builders every hour of their yacht's construction.

Full transparency is also the order of the day. Clients will never have to worry about how many hours have been spent on their boats. We offer full accounting for every dollar and every man-hour spent on the boat and are committed to maintaining an equitable balance of work versus progress payments. We believe that transparency is key to a happy and successful building experience for our clients and their project management team.

INNOVATION  Smarter. Better. Faster. These principles guide a never-ending drive to improve both the quality of Christensen's products as well as its construction processes. The company has become a world leader in FRP vacuum-bag constriction, a process that saves time and money, and results in lighter and stronger hulls, decks and superstructures. No builder in the world spends more time in R&D than Christensen. For example, every new hull is thoroughly tested with heat guns to locate spaces where additional insulation can be added. Christensen's use of four small full synchronized and auto-managed generators-- rather than two or three large gensets-- keeps electricity from being wasted in load banks and minimized wear and tear. The newest innovations include building our own comprehensive HVAC systems, replacing copper nickel salt water piping with composite piping and incorporating easy to repair or replace compressors. Christensen's next launch, Hull 38, will feature Christensen's first truly integrated "glass bridge" a development the company believes will vastly improve the functionality and beauty of the bridge while at the same time dramatically lowering the cost and raising the reliability of the entire navigation package.

OUR COMMITMENT IS TO BUILD WORLD CLASS SEAGOING MOTOR YACHTS FINISHED BY THE FINEST AMERICAN CRAFTSMEN TO THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF EXCELLENCE

METALWORK The Christensen metal department is an efficient, modern facility housing the world’s most talented metal smiths. These craftsmen create handrails, stairways, anchor pockets and myriad other stainless steel parts that are fit to precision and polished to a mirror finish. Christensen prides itself in the use of only the highest-grade stainless steel stock, resulting in exceptional finishes that will last for the life of the vessel.

STONEWORK Christensen sources the highest quality marble, onyx, quartz, granite and limestone from around the world. Slabs of stone are brought right to our facilities for fabrication. Using modern water jet cutting, sanding and edging machines, the yard’s master stone workers transform these raw materials into intricate inlaid floors, book-matched panels, and handcrafted counter tops of unsurpassed quality and beauty.

yacht yards

WOODWORK Christensen is known worldwide for the superiority of its built-in cabinetry and woodworking finishes. In cooperation with a client’s designer, the yard’s master woodworkers can turn virtually any species of wood into a superlative yacht interior. All of the shipyard’s cabinetry related skills including painting, varnishing, sanding and buffing takes place in modern shops with environmentally controlled finishing booths.

yacht yards

UPHOLSTERY The quality of the upholstery work at Christensen shows in every stitch. Unlike many yards, which employ subcontractors for the many pillows, cushions, headliners and built-in furnishings, we work one-on-one with world-renowned yacht interior designers, to achieve our client’s exact wishes.

yacht yards

ALL UNDER ONE ROOF  One thing that distinguishes Christensen Shipyards is the extent of the work done by our in-house boat builders. Elegant woodwork, exquisite and elaborate stonework, impeccable stainless steel, and custom upholstery are all done onsite by our master craftsman in modern facilities, using state-of-the-art tools and machinery. By keeping as many trades as possible in-house, Christensen can maintain it's high finish standards as well as control it's production process. Derecktor Shipyards

New York, Florida & Maine - Since 1947

Derecktor Shipyards - Since 1947

It was 1947 when Bob Derecktor began with a simple plan and a small shop in Mamaroneck, NY. His goal: build boats the equal of any in the world, and do it without compromise.

Today, the record says he and the yards he founded have done just that. Notable vessels ranging from America's Cup winners to massive mega-yachts to rugged Coast Guard cutters have come from Derecktor.

Just as  remarkable is the way the business has evolved. That first shop has grown to three full-service facilities ranging the length of the East Coast, and a fourth currently coming online in Fort Pierce, Florida. And, while still among the world's best builders and still a family business, today we offer customers a variety of benefits from complex refits to destination marinas.

What has not changed is a driving determination to do it right. Which is why when most American boatbuilders that were around all those years ago are now but distant memories, Derecktor is thriving. And still right on course.

The Top 10 Best Yacht Builders In The World

Best yacht builders list

Here is our list of the best yacht builders on earth. Deciding which shipyard will build your luxury yacht is a complex and deeply personal choice, depending on many factors including the level of customization you want, your budget, the location of the shipyard, and the ‘feel’ you get for the yard’s vision and people.

Our list of the best yacht builders is naturally subjective and will not feature every well-known brand. Our short selection includes a range of shipyards, from manufacturers of the some of the most iconic custom-built superyachts to hugely popular production yacht builders.

Here are the best yacht builders on earth, sorted by region.

As the largest American yacht building company in operation, Westport has a proud history of high quality yacht manufacturing dating back to 1964, with over 100 superyachts and over 170 fishing vessels launched from their Pacific Northwest Shipyard. McMichael Yacht Yards & Brokers

McMichael Sailboats

About McMichael Yacht Yards & Brokers

Established in 1935, we look forward to working with you.

McMichael Yacht Yards & Brokers employs over 35 people that continue to “provide good service in a friendly manner.” Our service yards are widely recognized as one of the top choices in the East for laminate repair and offshore race outfitting. Our brokerage office is staffed by some of the most experienced and respected yacht sales consultants and administration in the industry.

Founded by Howard and Jacqueline McMichael in 1935

Founded in New Rochelle, the company provided services to the boating public, including fuel and provisioning. Many of their customers were from nearby Larchmont Yacht Club. Howard and Jacqueline built the business over the following years believing that “providing good service in a friendly manner is the key to success”.

In 1938, Howard and Jacqueline leased property on the east basin of Mamaroneck Harbor from the Orienta Yacht Club. The business continued to grow and service the needs of sailors, fishermen and recreational boaters of Western Long Island Sound. During the war years, Howard worked in a defense plant at night, ran the boat business during the day, and was also a foreman at a yard in Rye building tugs for the Navy.

In 1945, while still working nights, Howard purchased the Rushmore Avenue boat yard on the west basin in Mamaroneck. This was also our first sales office, where Edna Brilleman became the first female yacht sales consultant in the industry. Today, the Rushmore location is still in use as our power boat yard, where we provide a 50-slip marina and winter storage and service.

In 1960, the property next to Orienta YC was purchased and a service building was built on the water, with the first indoor dry sailing operation on the East Coast. The building now houses our yard offices, heated work areas for boats up to 45’, the rigging shop, carpentry, and mechanic’s shops. A sales office followed, built at the upper portion of this property on the Boston Post Road, which is now the main office for McMichael Yacht Yards & Brokers.

In 1962, Howard Jr. joined the business after serving two years as an officer in the infantry. Having grown up in the boat yard, he started selling boats, managing purchasing and marketing. The 1960’s to the 1980’s were years of expansion and strong sales, with McMichael representing nearly every major builder at some point. Highlights include C&C, Pearson, Sweden, O’Day, Morgan, Ranger, Paceship, Nauticat, Islander, and, of course, J Boats. During this time, McMichael was the largest dealer in the world for many of these lines. Presently, in addition to J Boats, McMichael is one of the leading U.S. dealers for MJM Yachts, Hanse Yachts, Dehler Yachts, Amel Yachts, and AB Inflatables.

In 2019, Howard had passed the torch to another family member, Steve Leicht, the third generation of family members to run the company. Howard remained involved in the day-to-day operation of the business as Chairman until his death in June 2020.Steve has been on the Board for years and, for the preceding year, had served as the company’s COO. Today, Steve is the President and overseeing operations for both yards and the brokerage. Steve, as was Howard, is in the Post Road office of McMichael

John Glynn John brings to McMichael more than three decades of sailing, boating and sales experience. In addition to his time at BEYC, Glynn’s resume includes years as an Associate Editor (and Contributing Editor) for Sailing World magazine, where he was part of the team that created both the “Boat of the Year” awards and the NOOD Regattas. Over the years he has raced aboard C&C 40s, New York 36s, J/35s, Express 37s and Farr 40s, as well as his own J/30 and Soverel 33 Grey Seal. He boats with his family out of Captain Harbor in Greenwich, CT.

“John brings a wealth of experience as a racer, boat owner and industry professional,” said Michael Beers, McMichael Sales Manager. “He will be a fantastic resource for his clients in buying and selling boats. We’re proud to have him on our team, and his background will help us continue to fulfill our motto, ‘Experience Counts!’”

“I’ve been fortunate enough to spend my career in and around the sailing and boating community, enabling me to love the various jobs I’ve held,” said Glynn. “In joining McMichael Yacht Brokers I’ve found another fresh, new outlet from which to apply my knowledge of and passion for yachting. Moreover, I’m able to do that while working in the company of some of the finest yacht brokers in the business. It is my hope to bring to my brokerage customers a sense of confidence and satisfaction as they make yacht transactions, both from the buyer’s and seller’s sides.”

Cameron Campbell Cameron has been boating his entire life, starting as a toddler on Great South Bay on Long Island. He grew up in Connecticut and spent every summer on Long Island Sound. In college he was a member of the University of Rhode Island Sailing Team and also ran operations at the URI Waterfront Center. After college he was an ASA Sailing Instructor at the New York Sailing School on City Island and then for Olympic Circle Sailing on San Francisco Bay. He participated in many regattas on both coasts in both small and large boats. He owned a Sabre for many years which he cruised from Annapolis to Maine. Cameron also has experience with power boats ranging from center consoles though larger cruisers.

Cameron has been working with clients preparing for Bermuda races, extensive blue water cruising, and many that are new to boating.

Rick Fleig Rick grew up on Long Island spending many years sailing on the Sound in everything from J/22′s to J/105′s, Custom C&C 41′s and many other boats, competing in all the major Northeast events. This experience and passion for sailing led him on a path to sail in the 1987 America’s Cup in Perth, Australia with both the Courageous and USA Syndicates. He has sailed in many major international regattas, including the Swan World Championships in Sardinia, the World 6 Meter Championships in Portofino, Italy, and several Newport Bermuda races.

Rick combines his extensive sailing background with both the marine and sports industry, having worked as a regional sales manager at SunfishLaser and Vanguard Sailboats, and prior to that as a regional sales representative with sporting goods giant Nike. He believes that building relationships and understanding the clients’ needs are essential in helping customers have a great experience with their boats. He works out of the McMichael Yacht Broker’s Newport office at the Newport Shipyard.

Rick resides in Portsmouth, RI, with his family, having fallen in love with the Newport area during his many sailing events there. He recently retired as the director/coach of the Portsmouth High School Sailing Team after many years, and along with his wife, Carline, now enjoys his time proudly following their youngest son, Tyler, who just finished his second year at the US Naval Academy. Tyler is a very accomplished sailor himself, and a member of the nationally ranked USNA dinghy sailing team. Rick is a member of Sail Newport and can be seen racing many weeknights and weekends in all the local events in a variety of boats.

Michael Beers Michael is a licensed captain and active racer who began his sailing career in Boston on the Charles River. As someone who did not grow up sailing, he especially enjoys introducing new boaters to the sport. Michael has a proven track record of working tirelessly for his clients, and enjoys working directly with buyers to identify the best possible “next boat” from the many options available. He is an active racer, recently racing in the J/70 fleet at Quantum Key West Race Week and aboard the J/130 Dragonly in the 2012 Newport Bermuda Race.

Prior to joining McMichael in 2007, he captained the 80′ schooner Adirondack II in Newport, RI and was an instructor at Offshore Sailing. In his free time, he enjoys cruising his Sabre.

Todd Williams Todd started sailing on his family’s cruising boat before his memory serves. His love of racing was cultivated through sailing Blue Jays and Lasers in Pequot Yacht Club’s junior program.  Since then he has actively raced in the J105 fleet, J109 fleet, and helped form the J122 class. He also developed and helped launch the LIS IRC 35 class.  Todd is an experienced distance sailor and was involved with winning the Vineyard race class and IRC overall aboard the J122 Partnership.

Todd enjoys using his extensive knowledge of boating to find his clients the boat that best suits their needs.  He is dedicated to providing the best possible service to all his customers.  Todd can often be found racing with clients and helping them build their racing programs. Through the years, he has custom built many J/Boats, Alerions, and MJM power boats for clients, many of whom he now considers personal friends.

During the winter season you may spot the Williams family on the slopes at Okemo where they have a ski house.

Andy Kaplan Starting October 4, Andrew (Andy) Kaplan has joined the brokerage team at McMichael Yacht Yards & Brokers. The addition increases the McMichael roster to seven full-time yacht brokers serving customers up and down the east coast with a concentration on the Long Island Sound and Narragansett Bay. He will work primarily out of the McMichael Mamaroneck, NY, office as well as Martha’s Vineyard.

“Andy is bringing to McMichael a lifetime of experience in sail and power boating with a keen focus in the sailboat racing world,” said McMichael President Steve Leicht. “His broad familiarity with offshore and one-design sailboats combined with his powerboating experience makes him an ideal addition to our brokerage team.”

Kaplan spent the majority of his career in finance including helping create the Quattro Global Capital, LLC where he was a principal and head of operation and marketing. “I believe that my financial sales and management experience is a great asset as I transition to yacht brokerage,” noted Kaplan. “While they are different industries, to succeed in either you need similar disciplines when matching buyers with the right product. That’s what creates and maintains long term customer relationships.”

Kaplan grew-up in Mamaroneck and has been a member of the Larchmont Yacht Club for over 30 years where he has been active in the Club’s leadership. He lives in New Rochelle, NY, and on Martha’s Vineyard, MA.

Project EVO Mini-Megayacht

Van der Valk has built more than 1,000 yachts over the past 60-odd years, but it is still creating vessels that are bigger and better than before.

Project EVO Mini-Megayacht

Evo was commissioned by experienced seafarers, who, after owning several high-performance yachts, decided it was time to create a bespoke blue-water cruise for their family. The owners enlisted Van der Valk for the build to ensure premium quality, the Dutch yard says. SFG Yacht Design and Fancy by Dada penned EVO’s sleek exterior, after which Cristiano Gatto Design added more length and angles to the profile. The Italian film also designed the interior. The naval architects at Diana Yacht Design and Ginton Naval Architects also helped refine the design.

Made entirely from aluminum, Evo features a round-bilge, fast-displacement hull that promotes planing. Powered by two MTU engines, the vessel is expected to have a top speed of 24 knots, a cruising speed of 19 knots, and a range of 2,200 nautical miles. Built to ABS class, the yacht will also meet the latest IMO Tier III emissions regulations, meaning it can cruise in protected waters.

“Project Evo is a fine example of how clients can come to Van der Valk with their own exterior designers without having to reinvent the wheel with a new hull, safe in the knowledge that their yacht will excel in terms of performance, speed, and stability,” Bijker adds.

Bigger and better, indeed.

Boat Bottom Painting & Repair

The bottom of your boat requires constant maintenance. When underwater, barnacles, slime, and other marine organisms love catching ride and attaching themselves to your boat’s hull. If not cleaned and coated with the proper antifouling paint, these can accumulate and slow you down, burning extra fuel, and wear and tear on machinery.

Violent video shows some of the wild Brooklyn party boat brawl that left two people stabbed and another bashed in the head with a bottle — including images of bystanders carrying a badly beeding man.

Several men and women can be seen pushing and shoving each other on the pier right next to the massive yacht.

At one point, a man is forced to the ground and another man can be seen stomping on his face, appearing to knock him out, video shows. A security guard tries to pull his limp body away from the mayhem.

A man with a ripped t-shirt and a woman were also wrestled to the pavement.

Two men were stabbed and another was injured by a bottle after a fight broke out at a Brooklyn party boat on Saturday.

Another video shows the chaos after the stabbing. One of the victim’s lay on the ground as people screamed all around.

“Somebody pick him up!” one bystander yells.

“He got stabbed!”

Moments later, the bleeding victim is picked up and passed over the fence by a group of men who carry him towards an ambulance.

One of the men opens the ambulance door, but they then decide to carry him towards a car and put the victim in the backseat, video shows.

The mayhem occurred just after 5 p.m. at Pier 4 at the Brooklyn Army Terminal near 58th Street in Sunset Park onboard the yacht, Cornucopia Majesty.

When police arrived at the scene, they found a 32-year-old male who had been stabbed in the torso and 40-year-old man with multiple stab wounds to the chest and abdomen.

Another 28-year-old man had a bottle smashed on his head in the fracas.

“We had a good time. Nothing happened til the end,” passenger Java, 50, told The Post.

person on a stretcher

“There was a lot of pushing and shoving,” another passenger said.

All three were taken by EMS to NYU Langone in stable condition, according to police.

The boat was evacuated by police.

At the scene, a woman was seen laying on her side on a stretcher before she was loaded into the back of an ambulance.

The fight appeared to have erupted after the boat docked at the pier.

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.

Monroe Co. woman charged with murder in boat club crash that 'took those babies from us'

Monroe — Distraught relatives of two young siblings killed by an alleged drunken driver at a birthday party at a boat club lashed out at the suspect Tuesday in a Monroe County courtroom, accusing her of taking "those babies from us," while the woman's attorney suggested she suffered from a seizure that contributed to Saturday's crash.

Marshella Chidester, 66, showed little emotion as the aunt of the two children who were killed, Lana Phillips, 8, and Zayn Phillips, 4, addressed the court before Chidester's bond was set.

“She chose to drink and those were my grandbabies. She made the choice to get in that car, and she chose to drink and drive, and she took those babies from us,” grandmother Kathy Phillips said.

Chidester, a former commodore of the Swan Boat Club in Berlin Township where the crash took place, was formally charged in Monroe's 1st District Court with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of operating under the influence of alcohol causing death and four counts of operating under the influence of alcohol causing serious injury. She faces up to life in prison if she is convicted.

At her arraignment, Chidester limped into the courtroom with her right arm in a splint.

In an unusual move during the arraignment, District Judge Christian Horkey allowed relatives of the crash victims to address the court in person and via Zoom before setting bail at $1.5 million for Chidester. Some blared out comments via Zoom.

Bill Colovos, Chidester's attorney, said his client believes she had a seizure at the wheel Saturday and said she does not remember entering the parking lot of the boat club or anything that happened leading up to the crash. He said she was invited to the birthday party by the person hosting it.

"She was meeting her husband at the birthday party at the boat club … and all of a sudden, she said 'I blacked out, I remember nothing,'" Colovos said Tuesday evening.

Colovos said Chidester has a history of epileptic-type seizures in her legs that result in paralysis, including one last fall in which she blacked out. Chidester has since been treated for seizures, Colovos said, and has not had any since she was put on medication last year until Saturday.

Colovos said Chidester was barred by her doctor from driving for six months. The attorney said in court Tuesday that she was put on medication in November, which would have made her ineligible to drive until next month. Colovos told The Detroit News in a follow-up conversation that treatments began Oct. 1, when the original blackout episode occurred.

Colovos didn't specify a name for her condition in court but told The News Tuesday evening that Chidester was treated for neuropathy — a condition in which the peripheral nerves to the feet are damaged, according to the American Podiatric Medical Association. After the diagnosis, Chidester's doctor put her on medication and didn't allow her to drive until the end of March, Colovos said.

The biggest cause of neuropathy is diabetes, according to the APMA. Other causes include alcoholism, arthritis, heredity and advanced age, according to the medical group's website.

Monroe County Prosecutor Jeffrey Yorkey said there was no evidence Chidester had a seizure the day of the crash.

A “very long investigation,” including a breath test, indicated she was significantly over the legal limit of 0.08. He did not say what Chidester's blood alcohol content was but said she admitted to drinking.

Yorkey requested that Horkey, the judge, set Chidester’s bond at $1.5 million, noting that friends and family told investigators she has a “very severe substance abuse issue.”

Colovos said they do not have the results back from the blood alcohol test yet, and the preliminary breath test Chidester took on the scene is not admissible in court because it's often inaccurate.

Colovos also said earlier Tuesday that Chidester had no record and was retired, living a “peaceful life.”

“In 60 years on this earth, she’s never had any traffic involvement. She’s never had any law enforcement involvement,” Colovos said. “It’s horrible what happened, absolutely horrible … but some things we don’t have control over.”

Someone on the Zoom feed interjected as the attorney was speaking in court and said, “She shouldn’t have been drinking.”

Raquel Smouthers, Lana and Zayn's aunt, also said Tuesday that even if Chidester was on medication or had medical issues, she should not have been driving.

“Nobody should ever have to go to a birthday party thinking they’re going to die,” Smouthers said.

She added that the two deceased children couldn't have an open-casket funeral because of the injuries they suffered.

"I cannot close my eyes at night without seeing them babies and what they look like," Smouthers said between sobs.

Lana and Zayn's older brother and mother were in critical condition after the crash, according to a GoFundMe set up by the children's aunt, Diane Harrington. Their mother, Mariah Dodds, filed a lawsuit Monday against Chidester and the bar police said she was drinking at before the crash.

Chidester crashed into the Swan Boat Club in the 6000 block of Brancheau in Berlin Township at about 3 p.m. Saturday, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. Her vehicle landed 25 feet into the building, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough said.

“The scene was described by first responders as extremely chaotic, with high levels of emotions of those directly involved and those who witnessed this horrific incident,” Goodnough said at a Saturday night press conference.

The party was being held for a 3-year-old at the club, said Detroit attorney Jon Markos, who is representing Dodds.

The boat club was closed Sunday, according to its website and Facebook page, and is usually closed Monday and Tuesday.

"Our deepest sympathy goes out to this family and everyone else that was involved," said the boat club's post. "That family has asked us to post their go fund me to help with the funeral arrangements for the two children."
