Are There Jobs on Super Yachts For Couples?

  • Are There Jobs on Super Yachts For Coupl...

There are relationships that start whilst working on board superyachts, however you may already be in one and wondering whether it is possible for both of you to get a job on the same yacht.

The quick answer is – yes, it is possible for couples to get a yacht crew jobs together, however there are different challenges you may face.

Whilst we can’t be the voice for all superyachts, from our experience of training deckhands and stewardesses , the ones who are in a relationship have gone on to be successful as a couple and work together on yachts.

Initially, you may find very polar opinions from captains and recruitment agencies with regards to working as a couple on a yacht.

Some view people in relationships as being more reliable and settled. This in turn may mean you are less likely to party and/or go astray.

You are probably also willing to go the extra mile to help each other out when work gets tough on board the yacht. This is especially useful on small boats where the team always need to be looking out for one another.

However, every couple in the world will have an argument at some point, which may disrupt and disturb the harmony on board the ship.

Cabin arrangements can be tricky on bigger boats for couples, but smaller boats will be more accommodating, but the salaries are normally slightly lower.

This may sound obvious, but you must also remember to try to join in…some couples spend a lot of time with each other and forget to integrate themselves into the team.

This can be a concern for the captain who wouldn’t want a disjointed workforce.

There will be some jobs you apply for where the captain feels strongly about not having a couple on board, therefore you will just have to accept that boat is not for you and move on.

How to get a job on a yacht as a couple

There will be a few ‘couple friendly’ jobs, but the most common and easiest route to getting work as a couple on a yacht is to apply as an individual.

There will be far more opportunities and this way offers the path of least resistance to get your foot through the door and establish a good working relationship with the boat.

Then when another position becomes available, you will be in a great position to put your partner forward as a candidate.

If you start off working hard and get along with the crew, they will trust your recommendation and chances are you will be working as a couple in no time.

When applying for roles, keep your yachting CV ’s separate. Having your CV separate will look more professional and remember you are an individual with your own experiences and strengths.

Once you get through the initial screening phase, now is the perfect time to bring up you are in a relationship and your goal is to work together.

The boat will want to know that you have a strong relationship and if you have worked together before. It would be good to be armed with answers and to have a strong reference that can back this up.

So, you may have to prepare yourselves to be working separately for a while but keep focused on that goal of working together.

There is superyacht work out there for couples, so with the right attitude and perseverance, you will be able to find work and start a new exciting career together.

Are couples’ roles on the rise in yachting? 1 August 2023

couples roles crew couples Superyacht Crew yacht crew

In a recent social media poll, 62% of crew said that their yacht was couples-friendly and while we have certainly seen a rise in people looking for couples’ roles, they remain rare.

Just 5% of yacht jobs are actively seeking couples on average, and only a further 5% would be open to hiring a couple if the candidates were right and the timing aligned.

What respondents of this poll probably meant, however, is that their yacht is accepting of developing relationships onboard.

With this in mind, let’s take a look at some of the key characteristics of a couples role in yachting, when and where they might be available and how to nab yourself one if you are half of a loving pair…

Joining a yacht together

Very occasionally a superyacht will be looking for a solid crew couple, and this is most probably down to cabin arrangements. This is likely to be a smaller-sized yacht, and for this reason, a wider skillset would be hugely beneficial in a couple as roles may be cross-department. Think stew/chef or deck/engineer, for example.

Therefore, if you are already in a couple and looking for your next gig together, you might need to downsize.

Joining a yacht separately

A more common opportunity will be for you and your partner to continue your job search individually, but enquire whether the yacht is open to having couples onboard. This way, you could put your other half forward when a role arises in their department.

This will not necessarily mean you’ll get to stay in the same cabin, but it could be an advantage for the yacht too.

The caveat here, and what we often find, is one of you is usually better at your job than the other. You’ll first need to work you’re a**e off to impress the yacht enough to even consider your other half and then hope that they don’t drag you down, or vice versa.

Falling head over heels onboard

Although not everyone joins a yacht with the intention of starting a relationship, being in such close quarters with people, and being away from home for long periods, will undoubtedly lead to romance for some.

Few yachts have very strict rules prohibiting relationships onboard – or more specifically, casual ones. This does appear to have phased out over the years, but in most cases, you’ll need to disclose relationships to your Captain or HOD.

Strength in numbers

Crews can be clicky at the best of times, so imagine what tension can be caused when a couple fights or breaks up when working on the same boat. And this is, understandably, one of the biggest turn-offs for yachts.

If you’re actively seeking a couples’ role, then you need to prove that you are solid – not only as an experienced crew member, but also as a pair. Longevity in your relationship will be as important as the longevity on your CV.

If you’ve been together for 12 months but working on different yachts, with different leave patterns, then stolen weekends here and there will be more like having a six-week relationship.

Downsides of couples’ roles for a yacht

Cabin arrangements and great crew candidates aside, taking on a couple can be seen as riskier for yacht.

Firstly, a toxic couple can have a terrible impact on the overall atmosphere onboard. Even if you’re totally loved up, you might isolate yourself from the rest of the crew in favour of spending time alone together when you can.

If one resigns, then it’s also likely that the other will follow, meaning there is a higher rate of attrition among couples in yachting.

Finally, if both of you are at a senior or HOD level, then you could be seen to yield too much power onboard.

Are you wondering about couple’s positions in yachting and if there’s any chance of working together?  In this episode, I share 5 tips for the lovebirds wanting to start a career working on superyachts with their partner.

You may have been planning to do this solo and coincidentally meet the man of your dreams 3 months prior and they decide to be a part of the adventure, it happens! Or maybe it’s been a #couplegoal for you two for a while now!

Either way it’s possible, you will both just need the right attitude and perseverance, to find work together in the yachting industry

So I have 5 Tips for getting your first couple’s job onboard…

  • If you don’t have any yachting experience apply for jobs individually at first – Think of this as a stepping stone to the couples job. There is a much better chance of you getting a foot in the door if you both get a job separately in the beginning. The industry is competitive and couples positions are in high demand! Most likely if you have no experience onboard and have not been in a relationship for over a year the chance of getting your first job on a yacht will be fairly slim. This stepping stone is what a lot of couples I know had to do in the beginning to work together.  Something important to remember is that you need to be prepared front the beginning to make compromises. From your ideal positions onboard to crew cabin arrangements.  You may get a job together but not share a cabin straight away, this is because cabin arrangements are carefully thought out to accommodate each crew member  and their position onboard.
  • Once you have developed a good working relationship on your first boat you can try and put your partner forward as a candidate if a position becomes available. Job turnover is higher than a usual job so you can expect positions to become available after most seasons or at least once a year. It would be good to also make sure not everyone knows everything about you and your partners relationships. It may not increase your chances of getting a job together if the whole crew knows when you have a fight with your partner or you’re upset because of something that was said.  From a head of departments point of view if you hear the relationship could be the slightest bit unsteady it is unlikely we will want to bring your partner onboard. The less drama onboard the better!
  • Review your Yachting CV – When applying for your first superyacht job, keep your yachting CV’s separate. Having your CV separate will look more professional and remember you are an individual with your own experiences and strengths. Once you have some experience onboard and are looking to stake the next step then you will need to have Cvs which mirror each other. Both CVs will have the same layout/formatting/style and correct length of time you have been in the relationship for.
  • The boat will want to know that you have a strong relationship and if you have worked together before. It would be good to be armed with answers and to have a strong reference that can back this up. So think about this before you start applying toegtehr, you need to be convincing.
  • When you have experience in yachting you should be applying for every job not just couples jobs. You never know what opportunities the boat may havewhen they look at your CV. If they like you as a candidate and you say you are looking for a couples position, better to be honest and put it out there to see if you have any luck!

So there is the 5 tips if youre thinking about couples jobs – Apply separately at first, put your partner forward on a boat you have a great working relationship with, get matching CVS, have a strong reference and apply for every job! When you are looking for a couple position it’s important to make sure you both know the goal, to get a job on the same boat. If you understand you may be working separately for a while but keep focused on that goal of working together it will make more sense when times get a little tough when you’re without them.

Well I hope that’s helped some of you love birds out there! I will have to do a podcast episode on relationships onboard as that’s a whole other ball game you’re bound to come across at some point! How To Get a Job on a Yacht as a Couple

Is it easy to find a couples position?

How long does it usually take to get a position together?

Are there many couple-friendly boats in the industry?

Can crew couples actually work together?

These are some of the questions we’ve been getting lately from couples looking to work together and with the Mediterranean season fast approaching, we are quite certain that many couples are already on the lookout for their new role together onboard.

There really is no right or wrong way or hard and fast rule when it comes to working together. Sometimes it is as simple as being in the right place at the right time. Either way, it takes the right attitude and perseverance to find work together in the yachting industry.

Sure, there will be a few ‘couple friendly’ jobs, but the most common and possibly the easiest route to getting work as a couple is to apply as an individual. This will provide far more opportunities and offers the path of least resistance to get your foot in the door and establish a good relationship with the boat, allowing you to be in a better position to put your partner forward when the opportunity arises.

Keep in mind that you are both individuals with your own experiences and strengths so keeping your CVs separate is key. This will show professionalism and that you are able to separate your personal relationship from your career.

Another option is to be completely honest and look for jobs purely as a couple and not consider anything else. Be straightforward about your goal during interviews. This approach will probably take longer but you may be happier. It may be a good idea to give yourselves a timeframe and then assess your plans if it takes longer than your set time frame.

Once you both have a season or two of experience under your belt, getting work together should be much easier. You may need to look on it as a short term sacrifice for the longer term gain.

Does it work for everyone?

Just like with everything else, working together as a couple has its pros and cons. It’s best to remember that even though working together seems like the ideal situation, it isn’t always the best option. Being onboard can sometimes get lonely and one of the best things about working together is that you will always have that someone to talk to after a busy day.

So is working together for you?

Every couple is different just as every boat is different. The bottom line is that there are great amount of things to consider when deciding to pursue a career together on board. It’s not easy an journey, not for everyone anyway. However, if you and your partner are persistent and determined, you will find the perfect positions that suit you both.

Tips for getting a Couples Job

by theyachtstew

We worked on separate boats when Ben & I first met, doing completely different itineraries. It ended up that we only saw each other 11 times during our first six months of dating. And while I wouldn’t change anything about our relationship or how we got to where we are today, I did come to realise just how hard long-distance is! After our first season of long-distance, we both quit our jobs, flew to the UK & then Canada to meet each other’s families & started to look for a job together. In the past five years, we have ALWAYS worked on the same yacht & have been hired as a couple.

Don’t get me wrong, though, it hasn’t always been easy looking for a position together & I’m sure you’re not surprised to hear that our first job as a couple was by far the hardest to find! We started looking before we had been together for a year (which agents said was not long enough) & struggled to find a yacht that took us seriously.

With the Med season fast approaching, I have no doubt there will be many lovebirds looking for a couple’s position, so here are a few of my tips that have worked for us! *As always, these are 100% my opinions, so take what you will from it!

P.S. I am well aware that my EPs are upside down! They were swapped as soon as this photo was taken!

Matching CV’s When I print out couples CV’s & they look identical in terms of formatting, font & layout, it is visually a lot easier when presenting them to the Captain. It shows you have taken the time to work together on your CV’s, you understand the need to come across as a uniformed front & it looks professional.

Length of Relationship On my CV it says… Team Position: Ben Hulbert (together six years) One of the first questions I ask couples is how long they have been together & being as open & honest in your CV WILL help! Now that we are you are married, I will tweak it to this: Team Position: Ben Hulbert (together six years & married) The longer the length of time, the more stability you offer to a crew  & the higher your chance of being put closer towards the top of the pile.

Be prepared for compromise. One yacht we joined was a significant compromise for Ben. He had already been in the industry for two years and had an additional five years as a qualified boat builder in the UK – so it is needless to say, he was ready to step up to Bosun on a 50m. Unfortunately, the yacht only had 2nd stew (with no 3rd onboard, so after three years on yachts, I stepped into a junior role) and a Deckhand Role. We probably wouldn’t have applied for it as we were just about to resign after a hectic year & wanted a month off. It was, however, THE boat. The one we had spoken about on our first dates, with its dreamy West Coast Itinerary & incredible reputation for fantastic Owners. So we applied & thankfully got the position and ended up staying for three years. I moved to Chief Stew while ben moved to Bosun. None of that would have been possible if we weren’t willing to compromise and step down.

Another compromise we made was concerning cabin arrangements. On our most recent yacht, if we accepted the job together, we were told we would not be able to share a cabin. You guys, this was TOUGH, especially on a guest trip! I thought going into it that it would be easy peasy; what I didn’t realise was how much we relied on the privacy of our cabin to chat, confide in each other and hang out. We ended up meeting outside the crew door after my shift every night to say hi & catch up on the day. Luckily, our Captain was able to make arrangements for us to share a cabin on the Tank Deck not too long after the first guest trip & it made a world of difference having a place to call ours.

Apply to EVERY job Our most recent yacht only posted the Bosun position, not Chief Stew. So Ben applied, sent across both of our CV’s and then we waited. Finally, two weeks later, I received a call from Chief Stew & Captain while Ben was on the phone with the Chief Officer. Yes, it can be a bit annoying being on the hiring side, going through loads of emails from Stews hoping a deck position is also available, but we ALL do it & it’s sometimes the key to getting a job together.

Be Patient &  Resilient Ben has tattoos…15 of them! So you better believe that didn’t help us in our search. There were times when we discussed whether we should work apart until a position came up. I am SO happy we didn’t go ahead with that. Yes, we lost out on 14 different jobs in 3 months because of tattoos, but we also didn’t join separate boats to quit then as soon as a couple of jobs came up. We both worked extremely hard to update our agency profiles DAILY, went to every single networking event, the day worked, reached out to old colleagues & stayed in crew houses with other experienced crew. We made it our full-time job to FIND a job & refused to believe that we couldn’t be hired as a couple. P.S. Ben also went to Sephora, so his visible tattoos were no more… and as soon as he did that, we were offered a job the next day that didn’t care about visible tattoos. But it shows that we took the feedback we got from boats & made sure to fix any reoccurring issues.

Tips from other couples currently working together:

@Aliceroberta_ “I’d say it’s important that you don’t just for you first couples job offer if you bother aren’t happy. Although in a relationship we made sacrifices and compromises for our other half, yachting is along harder working together is one doesn’t enjoy the role/boat.”

@brionylaura26 “My numero uno tip would be to be patient and kind with each other. Going from hardly seeing each other and potentially being in different time zones with different schedules to living and working under the same roof can be a little testing at first. But, you will soon find your groove and work through it to a happy, balanced togetherness!”

@carriefletch “Agree on when to shut off “work mode” and when to have “you and me” mode. Aka, if you need to vent about something frustrating, communicate “, ok, I need to get this out…” and then once you’re done, be done. Focus on still being with each other and growing together. Being in yachting is all-encompassing, made conscious and verbal choices together to only talk about work when you need to, don’t let it dominate your conversations.”

@tmcompain “Keep personal problems (and over the top love and romance) in your cabin. Especially if you are only the couple onboard, it’s not nice making your crew feel uncomfortable.”

@revelintravel “In my experience, the best way to secure a GOOD couple’s job is to network network network. Unfortunately, I have found that some agencies offer meagre salaries and pretend they are doing you a favour by hiring both of you. My response to those provided has always been a firm no. It’s essential to know your worth and chances re that kind of jobs wouldn’t work out tremendously anyway (any relation should start with mutual respect, including an adequate salary).

@tamlawaverly “To assure that boat that even though you are a team, you are still awesome individuals, I find references that can attest to this are the best!”

@aimee_brisk “My biggest piece of advice is to remember what the Spice Girls put so perfectly…if you want to be with my love, you’ve got to get with my friends! Cringey, but TRUE. Girl time is equally as important as spending time with your other half. Balance was always key for me. I also felt as a second stewardess it made the girls and I have a stronger connection the more time I spent with them.”

@kyliejdv “As a couple, you need to be an asset to the boat. By working together, you push each other to be better, and that is always going to be beneficial for the boat!”

There you have it, lovebirds, our tips for finding your next Couples Position!

Cruise Ship Jobs for Couples

Working on a cruise ship with your significant other may seem like a dream come true. Getting paid to travel and spending lots of time together is what may first come to mind, but is that the reality? How difficult is it for a couple to get hired and work on a cruise ship together? Here are some facts on how to apply and get hired for cruise jobs as a couple.

Working on a Cruise Ship as a Couple

There are plenty of challenges when it comes to working and living as a couple on a cruise ship. There are some cruise jobs where you may not be able to share a cabin together. You and your spouse may have different contract lengths and completely opposite shifts. Will you even accept a contract if you aren’t on the same ship?

Cruise recruiters also want to make sure that if they are hiring a couple that there won’t be relationship problems that will interfere with your work. Furthermore, will you be able to handle this unique life onboard?

Cruise Jobs for Couples

Although couples can choose to apply for two different cruise jobs based on what their varied experience is, there is another option. A handful of cruise jobs may be held by couple if the couple is willing to work as a team. Even though this means only one salary, some of the commission based cruise jobs offer a chance to make a healthy salary.

There are many examples on different cruise ships where a husband-wife team or common-law partners work onboard together covering the same cruise job. Some of the most popular options are the Art Auctioneer, Port Shopping Guide, Guest Lecturer or Cruise Sales Manager. One big benefit is that each of these jobs is entitled to their own cabin meaning the couple doesn’t have to be split up, sharing a cabin with someone else.

Typically, cruise lines and their concessions don’t mind hiring couples to cover these particular cruise jobs. It’s like they are getting two people for the price of one. This is one feature a couple should promote during the application process. They should highlight the fact that they can sell more as a couple.

Cruise Line Couples Policy

Onboard Media, the concession that hires Port and Shopping Guides, states their Couples Policy on their website:

“At the time of submitting your application, you MUST include in your cover letter ?your intention of completing a contract as a couple. All applications for couples must include resumes of both candidates along with a video audition featuring the primary candidate and introducing the partner.”

Comparatively, Carnival Cruise Lines website employment pages answer the question, ‘Does Carnival hire couples?’ as follows:

“Carnival Cruise Lines is a very ‘couple friendly’ cruise line, and endeavors to allow couples to work on the same ship whenever possible. For prospective couples seeking employment with Carnival, for the first contract it may prove difficult to keep them together on the same ship as contracts are completed at different times. Further, Carnival prefers to assess employees as individuals before committing to hiring them as couples. Once couples have completed their first contract, Carnival will try its best to place them together for future contracts. However, there are many factors involved and this is not guaranteed.”

Applying For Cruise Jobs as a Couple

If you do want to pursue a cruise job that you would perform jointly then you would apply jointly as well. For the cruise jobs mentioned above, some cruise lines allow a couple to work together. You must specify this to the recruiter at the application and interview process.

A couple with two different types of expertise may also apply separately. Unfortunately this means that one of you could get hired before the other one. You may be hired to work on different ships. And, one half of the couple may not get hired at all. In the case where both partners must work on different ships for the first contract, they may ask to be put on the same ship for their second contract. Unfortunately, there are no guarantees.

There is a way to increase your chances of working on the same ship when applying for two different cruise jobs. After both partners have had their respective interviews with the recruiter is a good time to explain your situation. If you try to explain before hand, the recruiter may feel that your situation is too complicated.

Once both of you have proven that you are right for your respective jobs during an interview then the cruise line recruiter may be willing to make it work for you. On the other hand, you could choose to be upfront with the recruitment agency from the start. In that case you need to apply with a cover letter that represents you as a couple.

Cover Letter for Couples Applying for Cruise Jobs

Depending on the cruise jobs that the couple is applying for will determine the type of cover letter that should be sent. For couples that are applying as a couple, such as for the Port and Shopping Guide, follow the instructions given by Onboard Media above.

In cases where the couple is applying for two separate jobs, it is up to the couple if they want to disclose the fact sooner than later. When working with a recruitment agency, the couple may choose to enclose a joint cover letter with two separate resumes. The cover letter would specify that you are looking to get hired together.

Cruise Ship Careers as a Couple

Once you have completed at least one contract on a cruise ship, you may think that it should get easier to work together onboard. It seems reasonable to think that once an agency or the cruise line sees that you are committed to the job that it would be easy to get placed on the ship together. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.

Although this may work in your favour if you work together as a team, the same doesn’t hold true for employees working in different departments. Consider that one person may be advancing with their career while the other may not be able to be promoted if they intend to stay on the same ship. There are plenty of pros and cons of working onboard as a couple.

Liberty Contractor Accused Of Scamming Thousands From Grahamsville Couple

A contractor from the region was charged with larceny for allegedly scamming a couple out of thousands for a roofing job he never performed.

David Gizinski

jobs on yachts for couples

Sullivan County resident David Gizinski, age 37, of Liberty and the owner of Gizinski Construction, was arrested on Friday, Feb. 16 for the incident in November 2023.

According to Undersheriff Eric Chaboty of the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office, Gizinski received $13,656.38 from a Grahamsville couple as a 50 percent down payment for a roofing job.

The victims could not contact Gizinski after he took their money and never started the work, Chaboty said.

Gizinski was arraigned before Neversink Town Justice Michael Scagnelli and released under New York State’s bail reform law on his own recognizance.

He is due back in the Town of Neversink Court on Tuesday, March 19.

Sullivan County Sheriff Mike Schiff urges citizens to screen contractors carefully before giving them money.

“Do your research, look at internet reviews and social media to see what other people’s experiences have been with a contractor that you are thinking of hiring," Schiff said. “If a contractor wants full payment in advance or asks you to give them a positive review before they even start the job, that’s a red flag”.

The department is asking anyone who has been a victim of Gizinski to call the Sheriff’s Office at 845-794-7100.

Grenada Prison Escapees Are Charged With Murder of American Couple

The couple, Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel, went missing while sailing off the coast of Grenada.

A catamaran with the name “Simplicity” written on its hull sits on blue water on a sunny day. It is flying the American flag.

By Aimee Ortiz

Three men who had escaped from a prison in Grenada and were accused of hijacking an American couple’s yacht to flee have been charged with their murder, the police said on Thursday.

The couple, Ralph Hendry, 66, and Kathy Brandel, 71, went missing while sailing off the coast of Grenada . They had been spending the winter cruising in the Caribbean in their catamaran called Simplicity, which was found abandoned in neighboring St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Feb. 21.

There was no indication in the latest police statement that the bodies of the couple had been recovered as of Thursday.

Trevon Robertson, 23; Atiba Stanisclaus, 25; and Ron Mitchell, 30, face two counts of “capital murder by intentionally causing the death of Ralph Hendry and Kathleen Brandel,” the Royal Grenada Police Force said.

The authorities from police forces in Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines have given different ages and name spellings for the escapees.

The men were also charged with escaping lawful custody, housebreaking, robbery and two counts of kidnapping; Mr. Stanisclaus is also facing a rape charge, the police said, but no details were offered on those accusations. The three men made their first court appearance on Thursday, and are due back on March 27. The Royal Grenada Police Force did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The police had said in a statement released on Feb. 22 that three men who escaped from a prison in Grenada on Feb. 18 and made their way to St. Vincent using a yacht that had been docked in the St. George area of Grenada.

The prisoners were recaptured on Feb. 21, the same day that the couple’s yacht was found. At the time, the police said they were “currently working on leads that suggest that the two occupants of the yacht may have been killed in the process.”

At a news conference on Feb. 26 , Commissioner Don McKenzie of the Royal Grenada Police Force that “information suggests that, while traveling between Grenada and St. Vincent, they disposed of the occupants.”

During a Feb. 26 news conference , Junior Simmons, superintendent of the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force, said the joint investigation into the disappearance with Grenada police was ongoing, and he said the couple was presumed dead.

The investigation revealed that while sailing from Grenada, “the suspects committed several criminal acts including bodily harm to the couple,” he said.

The couple, who were married for 27 years, were “veteran cruisers,” according to the Salty Dawg Sailing Association , a nonprofit that brings together a community of sailors engaged in long-distance cruising on their boats. The couple were longtime members, the organization said in a statement, and “they both contributed to building the S.D.S.A.”

In a joint family statement posted on the association’s website on Feb. 27, Nick Buro, the son of Ms. Brandel, and Bryan Hendry, the son of Mr. Hendry, said that “if we have learned anything from this tragic event, it’s that we know they left this world in a better place than it was before they were born.”

“Ralph and Kathy lived a life that most of us can only dream of,” the message said. “Sailing the eastern coast of the United States, living on their home Simplicity, making friends with everyone they encountered, singing, dancing and laughing with friends and family — that’s who Ralph and Kathy were and that’s how they will be remembered in our hearts.”

Governor Maura Healey and her partner, Joanna Lydgate, sit down with the Love Letters podcast

How a couple always in the spotlight copes with the glare.

Maura Healey and her partner, Joanna Lydgate, on an episode of the Love Letters podcast.

Rare is the day Governor Maura Healey doesn’t make headlines.

In the past several weeks alone, she’s faced questions about where she was during her days off in February, and about her decision to nominate a former romantic partner to the state’s highest court.

She announced a sweeping decision to pardon people convicted of marijuana possession. And she’s repeatedly—and publicly— taken on the leadership of troubled Steward Health Care.

That doesn’t include the stories about the thousands of migrant families arriving in Massachusetts, the state budget, the beleaguered MBTA, or taxes.

All of this attention makes sense, of course. She’s the governor. She signed up for it.

But when I asked her on the Love Letters podcast how it affects her personal life, Healey said it probably takes a toll in more ways that she knows.

“Sometimes I get critiqued in the press over things that are my official actions ... Sometimes it’s critique over things that are more personal,” she said. “For me, it just becomes probably a cumulative toll that I’m not even aware of.”

Healey said she needs to do a better job “recognizing that and taking a moment to reset.”

How does Governor Healey reset? This is something I’ve wanted to know.

As a relationship journalist, I’m especially curious how her high-profile job—one where she is accountable to so many—affects her romantic partnership.

In January 2023, shortly after Healey was inaugurated, she introduced Joanna Lydgate as her significant other. Lydgate is an attorney who runs the States United Democracy Center, a nonprofit which works for fair elections. They told Globe columnist Yvonne Abraham that they’d been a couple for almost two years.

This season on the Love Letters podcast, our theme is: “Thanks for the help.” It’s all about who and what helps people navigate their romantic relationships. Guests have come on to talk about counsel they’ve received from mentors, parents, groups of supporters, and even exes.

I asked Healey’s team if she would come on the podcast to talk about who helps her and Lydgate handle the ups and downs of public office. Healey said they both wanted to talk about how their biggest helper has been music. No matter what happens in her job and in the world, Healey said, music helps bring her and Lydgate back to a better place.

Healey is a longtime music fan who had Grammy-award-winning singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile perform at her inauguration party at TD Garden. She’s been to the Boston Calling music festival and been spotted at live shows around New England.

We spoke with Healey and Lydgate at their Arlington home on March 1. They wore matching slippers. They talked about everything from their first live shows—Healey’s was Kool & the Gang on Boston Common; Lydgate’s was the Rolling Stones—to all-time favorite artists such as Tracy Chapman, to the warm-up songs Healey played as a high school and Harvard athlete.

Gov. Maura Healey (right) and her partner, Joanna Lydgate, at their home in Arlington on March 1, 2024.

Healey said she and Lydgate often turn to playlists and live shows to stay connected to each other.

“With our schedules we’re so often ships in the night ... and I think one of the things we’ve been able to do over the last year, and during the campaign the year before, was organize around concerts, just going to shows,” Healey said on the podcast. “And that’s been really nice because we may be grouchy at one another or angry at one another, or we may be caught up with the drama or the stress of our individual days ... but I think it’s really been helpful to us to kind of like get out to to see live music. Because there’s nothing better than live music and it really takes you out of your head.

Healey and Lydgate also gave Love Letters a playlist of the songs they most enjoy together. Here’s a track list:

1. “ You and Me on the Rock ,” Brandi Carlile

2. “ Starting Over ,” Chris Stapleton

3. “ Happy Children ,” Lori McKenna

4. “ Eyes on You ,” Sara Bareilles

5. “ Look Up ,” Joy Oladokun

6. “ The Day My Heart Goes Still ,” Tanya Tucker

7. “ You’re Gonna Wanna Remember This ,” Mark Erelli

8. “ Tiny Things ,” Tiny Habits

9. “ The Bones ,” Maren Morris

10. “ Mess ,” Noah Kahan

11. “ Turbulence ,” Pink

12. “ Sunscreen ,” Ira Wolf

13. “ You’re Not Alone ,” Allison Russell featuring Brandi Carlile

Healey and Lydgate talk about why they chose those songs and more on the episode. You can find it here or wherever you get your podcasts. [ Listen on Apple | Listen on Spotify ]

Missed the RSVP deadline? Well, you are uninvited from the wedding, says card sent to guests

Couples planning weddings too frequently don't get responses to invitations. Do they send a “missed RSVP” card? Do they give a courtesy call? Or do nothing? We’ve gathered expert advice.

When Nishma Mistry, a South Asian Atlanta-based woman, planned her wedding, she said the guest list included hundreds, and the events lasted for days. She also said she had to contact many on her guest list to confirm who was coming to what event.

“I had to call everyone and ask, ‘Are you coming?’ It was such a waste of time,” she told People magazine . “You have a list the size of your arm to get done and you’re trying to appease everyone. People don’t understand the importance of responding back.”

Mistry, a wedding planning expert and creator of Asian Bride Sorority, was thinking of her own experience more than a decade ago and the hordes of other couples frustrated by unanswered RSVPs when she created the “Missed RSVP” card, which wedding hosts can send out after their RSVP deadline has passed.

“We’re sorry you can’t make it to our wedding. Our RSVP deadline has passed, and unfortunately, you did not respond. We would have loved to have you attend, but final numbers have now been turned in, and your presence will be missed,” the card reads.

While Mistry’s card has received a mixed response online, with many claiming it’s “harsh,” her card does beg the question: What is the etiquette around RSVPs?

With graduations kicking off in less than two months and spring weddings starting to unfold, the next few months through the end of summer will be filled with significant celebrations, with hosts potentially waiting to get their RSVP answers.

There are many reasons for failing to respond to an RSVP on time. It’s a prevalent, albeit rude, bad habit. However, as Mistry and many others can attest, not doing so can throw off a person’s planning of a large-scale event. A couple can expect roughly 60% to 85% of their guest list to attend , meaning they can also expect to go hunting for a few RSVPs. While some may not agree with Mistry’s method, nearly all agree some communication from the host is required when an RSVP doesn’t receive a response.

According to one of America’s most well-known and trusted sources on etiquette, the late Emily Post , hosts “have no choice” but to reach out in some way when they do not receive an RSVP. However, Post suggests a friendly reminder call to confirm.

Her official thought, “It is perfectly polite, however, for hosts to call friends to ask if they plan to attend.”

If guests miss the RSVP deadline and want to attend, they should reach out to the host and confirm they can still attend. Showing up without RSVPing or reaching out is essentially showing up unannounced and could put the host in a really bad spot.
