Introducing the Azimut Atlantis 51

Azimut Yachts says its Atlantis 51, which recently debuted at Boot Düsseldorf, offers “the pure DNA of an open sport boat with the interior space and comfort you’d never expect to find on a yacht of this size.” The 53-footer — like her sisters, the Atlantis 34 and 43 — was designed by Marco Biaggi and Filippo Salvetti of Neo Design.

Owners with a need for speed as well as comfort could find a home with this vessel, which tops out at 35 knots, cruises at 32 knots and has IPS propulsion easy close-quarters maneuvering. Comfort can also be found on the belowdecks, at the C-shaped settee with expandable table amidships and to starboard. An optional 40-inch TV on the bulkhead forward would amp up this dinette’s social vibe, while converting the coffee table to a full dining table would make the space dinner-ready. The galley across is convenient for grabbing snacks and doing meal prep.

Additionally on the lower deck, the forepeak master stateroom has a vanity, bookcase and en suite head. Natural light from a double sky light and side windows brighten the space. The VIP stateroom is abaft the dinette and is “designed as a second owner’s suite,” Azimut says. The stateroom’s double berth can be split into twins, while the third stateroom opposite the VIP has twin bunks. These two share a head directly forward of the third stateroom.

While “spacious” would be Azimut’s choice word to describe this yacht’s lower deck, “open” would easily be the choice for the main deck. Her main- deck is fully open aft, meaning the space flows into the aft sun pad. To starboard is access to the Atlantis 51’s swim platform with a foldout, electric barbecue in the transom. The transom garage has room for a 10-foot-7-inch jet tender.

The main deck has a C-shaped settee with coffee table to port, which faces another small settee for two. The coffee table converts to a full dining table and the smaller settee has two pullout ottomans for additional seating around it. The yacht’s helm is forward and to starboard of the settee for two. On the foredeck, there is a second sun pad accommodating up to three adults and includes a folding Bimini top, an adjustable backrest, integrated cupholders and pop-up LED lights for enjoying twilight or evening hours in solitude.

Boat test: Azimut Atlantis 51

The flagship of the Azimut Atlantis range is a throwback to how sportscruisers used to be, but can it still compete with the more versatile competition?

The flagship of Azimut ’s attractive Atlantis range  is a rare beast. There is no shortage of handsome and capable 50ft sportscruisers to choose from but there are few, if any, that do away with the ubiquitous aft doors to offer an open-backed cockpit in the mould of how sportscruisers of this size used to be. Azimut is banking on the idea that sportscruisers have drifted too far away from their roots in offering enclosed upper saloons and that there is a place in the market for one that puts the party on deck and the apartment downstairs. You can, if you search deep enough in the options list, have cockpit doors, but the very suggestion of this draws pained expressions from the members of the Azimut team who join me on board for our test.

The first rule of sportscruiser design is that it must look good, and thanks to the handiwork of the young two-man team at Neo Design, that box has been thoroughly ticked. With an overall length of 53ft 1in (16.2m) the proportions are sweet, the snub-nosed bow fronting a long and elegant foredeck, which raises neatly to take the sweeping roofline up and over the cockpit to a pert overhang. The windows in the topsides are large and unfussy, prominent without detracting from the overall profile. It’s a good looking craft, especially in the optional silver paint of our test boat, one that you can’t help but take a second glance at as you walk away. As well as its silver topsides and superstructure, hull number one – which we are testing, and Azimut is at pains to point out is still classified as a prototype – also has a silver finish to the cockpit mouldings. It’s an option that offers extra pizzazz, something a little different to the usual vista of sterile white mouldings. I wasn’t so taken by the white/platinum Esthec decking, however, which looks cheap and, judging by the amount of black marks and scuffs on a boat with so few hours on the engines, will be a nightmare to keep clean. Thankfully you can opt for a more standard biscuit colour or the real thing, though it sits a long way down the options list. The cockpit is dominated by a sunpad large enough for four adults to comfortably lie on and soak up the sun side-by-side. Beneath it there is a tender garage that can swallow a Williams 325, though this does badly impede access to the engineroom. The hardtop’s short overhang keeps unwanted shadow off the sunpad but the omission of an extending canopy means you can’t add sun protection even if you wanted to.

A walkway to starboard leads into a cockpit that has a flat floor all the way forward to the companionway. The seat squabs of the small bench to starboard detach from their nests and pull out to become stools for the folding dinette table. This neat trick allows ten people to easily arrange themselves around the table to eat with the wetbar within close reach. That said, due to the size of the standard BBQ grill it is located on the transom, great for keeping smoke and food smells off the boat but not quite so convenient for the cook who has to ferry food back and forth.

The helm station is attractive and sensibly arranged, if compact for a boat of this size, and only has space for a single chartplotter. A floating plinth juts out into the companionway to support the helm seat that is inboard of the navigator, but its central location improves the view. On the opposite side of the companionway there is a raised area that is part seating, part sunpad. It works better as a sunpad because when you’re on the move the long, high seat base puts your legs out in front of you, meaning your back will take any impact. It would be better to have a proper bench seat here rather than creating a sunpad where there isn’t the need for one, especially when there is a four-person sunpad up front with a pram hood for shade.Part of the issue is that the sunroof is small and made of solid GRP. In an era of heavily glazed solid sunroofs or folding canvas ones with enormous apertures, the 51’s offering falls short and its tendency to rattle suggests the mechanism itself could do with fine tuning. If the 51 is all about life on deck then Azimut has dropped the ball with the diminutive size of its sunroof.

Below decks Neo Design’s creative juices flow freely and the Atlantis dazzles with Italian chic. There’s a delightful mix of materials and textures from the oak staircase to the dark wenge flooring and, higher up on the eye-level lockers, a glossy lacquer in a classy coffee hue. The sofa extends back past the companionway staircase to maximise space and is arranged opposite a galley that looks great but is short on storage space. There is a full- height fridge/freezer, however.

Working aft, you find the pair of guests cabins with a bunk bed cabin to port and a larger VIP to starboard that has the option of a queen-size double bed or a pair of singles that slide together to make a double. The bunks are fine for adults but better suited to kids and the VIP, or “mini master” as Azimut ambitiously calls it, is a pleasant, versatile space with enough storage to keep guests happy during longer stays. Neither of these cabins are ensuite, however, and they share the bathroom that also doubles as the day heads so there could be queues at bed time.

If the first rule of sportscruiser is good looks then the second is a rewarding driving experience. Few people will be chucking these boats around like Class 1 racers but it’s nice to know that they have a bit of bite when you open the taps. Azimut has hedged its bets with just one engine option: Volvo Penta’s IPS800 with 600hp per side. With this the only choice there is no room for error and thankfully the 51 performs beautifully. The motors kick it on to the plane with urgency but remain smooth and refined when you want to set the throttles and soak up the miles. This is where the 51 excels, though its steering is light and positive it’s the boat’s ability to cruise between 18 and 32 knots that is most appealing. Top speed on test was a useful 34.5 knots with tanks a quarter full and a Pirelli tender in the garage.

A happy by product of the 51 having an open cockpit is that you actually feel as if you are on a boat. You can hear the engines and the water rushing past the hull, which makes a pleasant change to being sealed off from the action in an air-conditioned box.

How does it stack up regarding price? Well it’s certainly towards the top end of the scale, the starting price coming in at around €90,000 more than the Princess V50 Open and €170,000 more than the admittedly cheaper feeling Beneteau Gran Turismo 50. In fairness to the Italian boat it has larger engines than its rivals but though you can see and feel its quality over the Beneteau it doesn’t feel any better put together than the British boats. On the face of it, it’s hard to see how the Atlantis 51 can hold a torch to the more versatile Princess V50, Beneteau Gran Turismo 50 or Sunseeker’s all-new Predator 50. These boats, with their enclosed saloons and adaptable layouts are the better choice if you wish to use the boat all year round or if it is going to be based in northern Europe or other areas with a more changeable climate. However, if you will only use the boat when the weather is perfect and life on deck is a concern above all else then the big Atlantis charges to the front of the pack.

Ultimately, this boat’s appeal will hinge on the environment in which it is kept. For pure fun in the sun it’s a hard recipe to beat but if you want something with an all court game there are rivals out there that offer more. The integration of the helm seat is neatly done and it’s helpful that two people can sit at the helm on passage. That said, the navigator does sit outboard of the skipper.

A true feat of Italian engineering, the 51 Atlantis features a flush and open cockpit, tender garage, three staterooms, and lower salon with a dinette , something no other yacht in its class can offer. A hydraulic platform , along with tender garage , keeps the tender out of sight but also allows for easy deployment when ready to use. The single cockpit sole feels massive, with plenty of seating and lounging space. Below deck, three staterooms will sleep six comfortably, with the starboard side stateroom acting as a true second master.

With Volvo IPS 800s , the transmission is smooth, quiet, and efficient, allowing the boat to reach speeds of 32 knots in comfort and relative quiet. The IPS system has quickly outpaced all other pod systems as the most robust and reliable system available. The joystick features surgical precision, taking the stress out of docking in all situations, even for the most experienced captain. Dynamic Positioning System automatically holds the boats heading and position, making it very easy to wait for bridges, fuel docks, or set lines and fenders. The autopilot is controlled through Volvo’s Joystick Driving , which makes the boat incredibly nimble at high speed as it allows for thrilling and aggressive turns, giving the captain the feel that they are truly driving a sports car and not a yacht. Incredible acceleration, aggressive turns, and a profile that will turn heads everywhere it goes make the 51 Atlantis a true showstopper. The IPS system allows the engine room to be pushed further aft in the boat, which is one of the reasons the boat boasts a three stateroom, two head layout along with a lower salon.

The bow features a below deck windlass to maximize deck space and reduce tripping hazards. A double-long bow deck hatch gives plenty of light and ventilation to the master cabin below. The sunpad is double wide and features build in cup holders, a folding bimini top for sunny days, and folding backrests for added comfort. Two pop-up lights make it a great place to lounge at night as well as during the day. A dedicated stereo control allows for localized control, or simply utilize the Fusion stereo’s Bluetooth connectivity.

The cockpit and swim platform are perfectly laid out for entertainment and to maximize floorspace. Unlike most boats that have the grill under the hardtop, Azimut relocated the grill to the transom. This not only gives the chef more unincumbered space on the platform, but also keeps the smoke and fumes away from the hardtop and guests in the cockpit. When not in use, the grill easy folds away and does not impede platform access or take up any space.

The tender garage houses a 2020 Williams 325 Turbojet . This model is longer, heavier, and has more seating capacity than the Williams 285 Turbojet which is typically fitted with the 51 Atlantis. A hydraulic platform and electric winch system make launching the tender very easy and labor free. Even the tender comes loaded with optional features including underwater lights, LED deck lights, bathing ladder, towing kit, and teak footwells . The garage has been fitted with side-mounted rod holders and a 110V outlet , perfect for inflating water toys.

The main deck is accessed from either side of the swim platform, with the starboard side widened 8” to allow for easier access, especially when boarding with bulky items. Port and starboard mooring capstans assist in mediterranean style mooring or deploying a stern anchor. The aft facing sun pad has built in cupholders and integrated headrest. The tender garage can also be accessed from hatches under the sun pad, making it easy to get lines and fenders without having to access the swim platform.

The cockpit is incredibly social and lends itself to entertaining more so than most any boat around the 50’ mark. All exterior cushions are upholstered in two tone Batyline , a material made exclusively for high-end outdoor furniture. Batyline is not only very stain resistant, but also breathable which allows it to dry out quickly and does not get as hot as traditional vinyl. The portside of the cockpit has U-shaped seating with a composite inlaid, high-low table that can fold out for proper dining or stay folded for easier access to the lounge. When al fresco dining is desired or a large group wants to sit around the table, the starboard side seats pull away from their bench position and fill in the starboard side of the table.

Premium Esthec decking is featured through the exterior of the boat. Regarded as the most durable faux-teak decking in the market today, it does not get as hot as most faux deck options and has no plastic of any kind, making it much more durable than most competitors. Overhead lights and speakers further add to the entertaining features of the cockpit. Two large air handlers are housed in the cockpit with outlet vents that face forward at the hardtop supports – an ingenious design as the hot air that tries to escape from under the hardtop is cooled and blown back in, creating a bubble of cooler air in the cockpit. This results in air conditioning that works much better than setups typically found in open cockpit boats. For storage and for extended stays onboard, the boat has a custom Strataglass enclosure with access door , completely cutting off the cockpit from the elements and greatly reducing the number of seat covers that needed to be put on after each use.

The starboard side of the cockpit has a console that houses a high-low TV, wetbar with icemaker, refrigerator, and sink . The icemaker is filled with purified water, so the ice produced is clean ice, not polluted from the boat’s fresh water tank. A large opening sunroof and opening port and starboard side windows allow for plenty of natural ventilation underway or at the dock. The helm leaves nothing to be desired as all instrumentation and switches are ergonomically well placed in a carbon fiber dashboard.

Double wide helm seats and a forward-facing portside lounge let several guests join the captain and provide a secondary social circle forward of the aft cockpit. The portside lounge can easily double over to become a bench seat as well.

Below deck , large hull windows and a clever use of mirrors flood the staterooms and salon with natural light, giving the illusion guests are not below deck at all, but rather on the main level. Instead of one cabinet material throughout, Azimut compliments the matte Grey Oak woodwork with high-gloss lacquered finish.

A starboard side C-shaped sofa and folding table sit opposite a fully furnished galley complete with refrigerator, freezer, sink, convection oven, and range . Storage through the salon is accomplished with overhead lacquered cabinetry and large drawer on the forward bulkhead.

A wall mounted Samsung TV hinges out to face the salon sofa and is complete with a Bose soundbar, DirecTV receiver, and BluRay DVD player . Wood flooring keeps the salon easy to clean and contributes to the contemporary interior décor. Dimmable salon lights are complimented by rope lighting recessed into the ceiling.

The master stateroom sits forward of the salon. In keeping with the rest of the lower deck, full length hull windows and a double-long deck hatch flood the stateroom in natural light. The opening deck hatch and port and starboard portholes also allow for natural ventilation when temperatures allow.

The beam of the boat is carried very far forward in the master stateroom, resulting in a berth that is almost island style and makes it much easier to change linens and make the bed. The forward bulkhead houses a TV cleverly hidden inside a mirror; a design cue often reserved for mega yachts. A hidden ottoman and fold down desk make it easy to engage in today’s trend of working remote.

The master head has a mirrored medicine cabinet, opening porthole, basin style sink, and rain shower with wand .

The starboard side aft stateroom can truly be considered a second master. Running almost the entire beam of the boat, the berth is double wide but can also easily slide apart to sleep separately. An inboard desk runs the full length of the stateroom with a full-length mirror just above, continuing the trend of abundant natural light below deck.

The portside bunk stateroom still features all the amenities of the rest of the staterooms, with reading lights, hull window, large hanging locker, and TVs for each bunk.

The day head sits just forward of the port side guest stateroom, with a basin style sink, window with opening porthole , and double wide, mirrored medicine cabinet .

The engine room is impressively laid out considering the tender garage , a feature that often has to shrink the vertical clearance of machinery spaces. Twin Volvo D8 IPS800s are housed with a Seakeeper 6, 17kw Onan generator, and Condaria chiller among other equipment. All necessary AC and DC breakers are put on the forward bulkhead for easy and quick access, while the outboard side of the engines has been enlarged for easy access to the aft pod and bilge area.
