Hello Dear Fellow Mariners. I am at the end of my tether! I have been searching for my late father-in-laws motor yacht "JUNE" for some years now. It was designed by John Silver and built on the Clyde in 1936. It was a ketch rigged 36 feet long teak and mahogany boat that plied the Sottish waters up until the 2000's when it disappeared sadly, not to be detected again. Friends of ours said they'd heard that she had been re discovered in 2022 around the Ardfern area in Scotland, but try as I might, I could not sniff her out. Call it nostalgia, but I am determined to find out what happened to the old girl. My wife and I did all our swooning on here (me recently out of the Merchant Navy, proving I was a worthy person for my father in laws pride and joy!) Any assistance please do let me know [email protected] ... and I'd be eternally grateful. The JUNE is probably still up in Scottish waters ... so the search shouldn't be too wide spread. Also, which is the Shipping Index I should bring up when searching for yachts. Thanks a lot guys all the best

Thanks

#1. Well Douglas you are the first one I would come to for advice when I first heard that expression “ where do you think you are ? On your Daddies yacht ?”. One of the few ex. Merchant mariners who could answer in all truthfulness. I wish you well in your search and have every successs in finding her history. The old girl must be lying up some backwater praying for someone to rescue her. Every success in your endeavours . Cheers JS PS just looked at your cv and see you were with Athel line from 1965 . I was mate with RS Dalgliesh then and sailing with a chief engineer ex Athel line who would have been second engineer with them prior to your starting there , his name was Candiotis and lived in North Shields he had been involved in some incident on one of their tankers and supposedly badly burned although must have been on other parts of his body as weren’t visible when dressed . Can you recollect of any incident talked about when you were there ? Cheers JS

I typed "image yacht june no 11021" in the search box and the advanced search box, sadly to no avail. I do have an old photograph of her, but my tech-knowledge is so infantile, I wouldn't have the slightest idea as to how to transfer it to this forum .... I know it's easy for a lot of folk, but sadly, I'm not one of them! I will keep hunting though!

Cheers Ardfern Yacht Centre, by Lochgilphead, Scotland Hi Doc, Many thanks for the reply and all the suggestions enclosed. My wife and I visit that part of the world up in Scotland quite a lot, and I have on several occasions, dropped in to Ardfern Yacht Marina to enquire as to June's whereabouts. As I mentioned in my first post, the last time they spotted her was in early 2022, but not a whisper since. Kinda makes me think that she may have been bought and taken down South ... I will try the publishers of Motor Yachts on the Clyde though ... Heading back up to Lochgilphead around February, and will, once again, drop in to Ardfern, Thanks again Doc.
Hi John, I had to chuckle when reading your reply - for which many thanks, it's much appreciated. Not quite "Daddy's yacht", though close enough as I did go on and marry his beautiful daughter! I was, as a matter of fact, "vetted" by father Bill on the yacht as he sought to see whether I was BS'ing about my abilities to discern bouys, currents, navigation channels etc, being 2nd mate with Athel at the time... and this 2 week holiday with the family was my test! It was great fun, especially as on one of the days we went sailing up the Clyde only to be heading for a buoy up ahead a mile away. "I'd steer clear of that one Bill, come to port and pass well clear of it" was my suggestion. "Meh," came the reply, "I've passed that fella several times close to in the past - should be all right" "I wouldn't" I repeated. He took some persuasion, but finally followed my directive. When docked, he got out the Book of Buoys ... "Hmmm, you were right to pass clear, but I was right because we only draw 3 feet draft. Spoils shared ... it was an Isolation Danger Buoy marking a submerged wreck... honours even, I passed the test and was accepted into the Clan Menzies!! I joined Athel in '65 John, but only once came across the name Chandiotis in later years when in a nostalgic gathering. The name that readily came to mind was Roger Charlton ... an immensely funny man, Geordie, standing well over six feet and one for the women! He got me into loads of trouble across just about every port we touched in on - quite an experience for a wet-behind-the-ears junior apprentice. Charlton did the round tours across Ben Line, Blue Flu, Clan Line etc after leaving Athel. Sadly the only major incident I was ever involved in at sea (thank God it was the only one) was the retrieving of the C/O's body from the bottom of an empty Toluene tank in the middle of Hiroshima Bay at 2 am in the morning. He had taken his gas mask off for a split second to check the elephant suction foot and he was done for... Stupid, I know, but tragic nonetheless, a lovely man who left behind a widow and four children, one of whom I still keep in touch with to ensure Ed's legacy never died. Good man. Anyway, back to the search for the June.... wish me luck! Now I have a few spare coppers in the bank and I can afford the boat I can't bloody find her!! Sod's law ... toodle pip!

Re: MY JUNE It is with great sadness that yesterday I was advised of the demise of this wonderful James Silver Yacht. She was sold off Lochgilphead last March by hr owner to a local boatyard in extremely poor condition (I was sent photos) and according to the yard owner, was well beyond repair.... so she was scrapped in June (ironically) 2023 nearby. The greater irony was that my wife and I visited and had dinner at a restaurant literally 100 yrds from where she was laid up by the Crinan Canal before she was taken to be scrapped three months later. We often go on holiday to that area of Argyll ! I vividly remember when we left the restaurant at around 10pm, seeing the shape of a white hulled cruiser up on blocks along the edge of the Canal but never gave it a second thought - it was June! If only hey .....I am not embarrassed to admit a tear did roll down my cheek upon hearing how close I was... Anyway, the yard owner has retained some stuff taken off her and has offered me the steering wheel and the compass. A decent chap on whom the irony was not wasted! I've yet to tell my wife Fiona, but I will break it to her sometime soon. Thank you for the loan of your eyes and ears on here ... time to call off the search party. Grateful thanks to all.

Hi Douglas. Such a poignant story, there is a magazine printed in Scotland , been running since the 1800, a short story to them about your Yacht would go down well maybe, just a thought. The Magazine is called The Peoples Friend. Cheers Des

The 7 Best Things to do at Night in Moscow

By Chris Boyle

SOHO ROOMS

Moscow nightlife can be both fun and very confusing.

Restaurants often turn into clubs, and of course there’s the infamous ‘face control’ door policy which only admits the most beautiful, the most cash-laden and the most cultured – and very much depends on the whim of the ‘face master’ on the door at each club.Head to the right venue though, and you’ll find them full of beautiful people up for a crazy party.

Asking your hotel to phone ahead can help, as well as taking a few glamorous faces – and the ability to spend. Face control is simple; those who look cultured, wealthy and beautiful get in, those that don’t, won’t.

RAI

Cuisine: European, Japanese

RAI. It’s not just the name of a club – it’s the benchmark of glamour, the pinnacle of hedonism and the definition of an entire clubbing era.

The 8 Best Restaurants in Moscow

Confidante: beautiful branded hotels, azerbaijan, dubai and beyond: fairmont expands luxury portfolio.

A growing organism, RAI is always developing to remain at the forefront of club culture. Since hitting the Moscow scene four years ago, the club has refined its cutting edge vibe and today you’ll find a trendsetting venue that competes with the world’s most distinguished nightspots.

RAI sits at the heart of the Russian capital and pulsates with the beat of this legendary city. Loud and lavish, the parties here attract some of the most beautiful people on the planet.

Always evolving and moving with the times, RAI last year launched Evolution, a brand new program of quality music, stunning shows and an atmosphere you won’t find elsewhere. Trendy, tasty and utterly irresistible, RAI is the club of choice for those in the know.

BOLSHOI THEATRE

BALLET AT THE BOLSHOI THEATRE

One of the world’s finest opera and ballet halls is returning to active service this year.

The Bolshoi Theatre, the second largest opera house in Europe, is one of the most instantly recognizable monuments in the Russian capital. The opera house has been in existence since 1776, and despite several fires and a bomb attack, the theatre’s Classical Greek design is still very impressive. The Theatre has a varied ballet and opera program, many of which are traditional Russian performances, such as Swan Lake and the Nutcracker. Currently, the main stage of the Bolshoi Theatre is closed while it undergoes a $730m renovation that will see the theatre reemerge as one of the world’s top opera halls. During the early part of 2011, shows will still be available at the Bolshoi Theatre’s New Stage.

IMPERIA LOUNGE

IMPERIAL LOUNGE

When the company that produces Imperia Vodka announced that it would be opening a club in Moscow in 2010, it caused a stir amongst Muscovites.

Since vodka is the national drink in Russia, any announcement from one of the country’s main distributors was likely to create a buzz, and with Imperia Lounge, the hype was justified. Floor-to-ceiling screens project lasers and graphics onto the walls and the clientele is almost entirely made up of Russian models and celebrities. The club has one of the toughest door policies in town and exercises the legendary Moscow face-control, so you’ll really have to impress to get past that velvet rope. Once inside you’ll see why Imperia Lounge is the place to see and be seen. The multi-level industrial space features wall-mounted LCD displays and go-go dancers suspended on circular pedestals above sunken lounge spaces, together with a cool VIP deck. The music is supplied by some of the hottest DJs around, making it one of the coolest dance floors in Moscow. It gets hot and sweaty so be prepared for a crush!

Housed in a cavernous 17th century converted warehouse, GQ Bar is the brainchild of restaurateur Arkady Novikov.

The entrepreneur owns a string of restaurants and bars across Russia, all of which have a reputation for the high-class clientele they attract and the quality of food and drink on offer. GQ Bar continues this theme with the clientele seemingly pulled from the magazine images that adorn the walls of the restaurant. The bar has a timeless décor of dark oak and white walls, and the large windows provide plenty of light. A great place to start your evening, GQ Bar is located in the Baltschug area, close to many of Moscow’s finest hotels and tends to attract a more mature, business-minded crowd.

A guide to Moscow’s summer festivals

Believe it or not, in summer Moscow usually gets rather hot. It’s also the season when the city is fully awake, with more events happening than at any other time of the year. Almost every weekend a new market, exhibition or festival takes place, making it pretty hard to choose which one to attend.

Of course, the highlight of this summer in the Russian capital will be the celebration of football, as Moscow gets ready to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup (from 14 June to 15 July) along with 10 other cities across the country. Nevertheless, over the years some big annual events have become an integral – and fun – part of Moscow’s summer culture. Here are our top picks.

Usadba Jazz at Arkhangelskoe

This iconic open-air jazz festival has been taking place in Moscow for over a decade, making it one of the city’s favourite outdoor events. The location is always the same – the gorgeous 19th-century  Arkhangelskoe Estate and its surroundings. Apart from some great classical and modern jazz, blues, funk, soul and world music, there’s a new theme each year: in 2017 it was ecology, introducing some local eco-designers and culinary artists to jazz-loving Muscovites.

Dates: 2–3 June 2018

Red Square Book Fest

This year Moscow’s annual book festival will be taking over the historic Red Square for the fourth time. The event celebrates the reading culture, introduces the best local publishing houses, and allows visitors to purchase books, attend masterclasses and listen to some well-known modern Russian writers. The program covers several themes, including fiction, non-fiction, ebooks, children’s and educational literature, antique and secondhand books, as well as Russian regions.  Famous Russian museums present their publishing projects and catalogues, and there are live concerts and performances throughout the festival.

Moscow Flower Show

Who knew Moscow could be a rose? Last year a new sort of rose was created just to celebrate the 870th anniversary of the Russian capital. This international garden festival is a paradise for the admirers of landscape design and all things green and blooming. Both recognised and up-and-coming landscape designers present their works and compete for the main prize, awarded by an international jury. And visitors get a chance to release their inner flower child.

Dates: 29 June–8 July 2018

Taste of Moscow

This international food festival   has been around for a long time, covering 19 cities of the world and gaining huge popularity in Moscow. The city’s 30 best restaurants will take part in the program this year, offering visitors their most renowned dishes and products. You can treat yourself to delicacies from one of the exclusive menus created specifically for the festival, attend degustations or learn how to cook from a professional chef. The interactive program will also include concerts, masterclasses, pop-up performances and children’s activities.

Much loved by both locals and visitors to the city, the annual Park Live rock festival has achieved international status in its six years of existence, treating the fans with performances from world-famous and local rock stars. Hosting Muse in 2015 has been the highlight in the festival’s history, while Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lana Del Rey, Limp Bizkit and System of a Down have also headlined. In 2018 revellers will have a chance to see David Guetta, Gorillaz and Massive Attack at the vibrant Gorky Park  in the heart of the city.

Dates: 27–29 July 2018

Afisha Picnic

Moscow’s biggest open-air festival is a summer rave for food and music lovers. Organized by Afisha magazine, it’s been expanding year on year, eventually moving from concert halls and stadiums to the vast Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve , a former royal estate and a Unesco World Heritage Site by the Moscow River. The organisers make sure there’s lots going on, so apart from multiple music stages you can find food stalls with local products, a designers’ market, gaming and lecture areas – all with a strict no-alcohol policy.

Times and Epochs

The ultimate historical festival in Russia expands with each passing year, taking over Moscow parks, recreational areas and some of the main streets. Moscow City Day

Moscow turned 870 in 2017, and to celebrate the occasion, the city administration decided to host a 10-day festival under the slogan ‘Moscow is a city where history is being made’. With Russian avant-garde the main theme, dozens of events, lectures, performances and street markets celebrated the history of the capital as well as its prominent inhabitants. Plenty of music, food and modern art is always to be expected on the city streets during this time. Don’t miss the magnificent fireworks.

What to Pack for Russia: Summer

Written By: Julia K.

If you made it to Moscow, Russia during summer, you’re in luck. Moscow offers a plethora of beautifully landscaped parks and festivals all over the city. If you want to know how to visit all those locations in style, continue reading!

Traveling to Russia in the winter? Read this post instead.

Packing List for Russia in the Summer

White Top  | Blouse |  Tank | Top |  Shirt |  Pant |  Pants | Skirt | Dress |  Dress  | Jacket | Cardigan | Flats | Wedge | Bag  | Hat

Summers in Moscow can get hot. It can range between 77-86°F (25-30°C) and sometimes be humid. Dressing appropriately, comfortably, and accordingly will save you a headache and make your stay more enjoyable.

Always check the weather forecast before your trip. Once you’ve researched the weather, you can focus on creating a travel capsule wardrobe , which should easily fit in a carryon suitcase with the help of packing cubes to compress your clothing.

Must-see attractions during summer include many parks, such as VDNH, Chistyye Prudy, Izmaylovo and Izmailovsky Park, and of course the famous antique and flea market called Vernisaj.

Start by reading these general tips on packing for summer travel:

  • Capsule Wardrobe for Summer
  • Top Summer Dresses Perfect for Europe
  • Lightweight Jackets for Easy Layers
  • Best Walking Shoes for Europe’s Cobblestone Streets

One can see a range of different styles in Moscow. After all, it’s a hub for many travelers, businesspeople, and locals. However, if you’d like to be perceived and treated in a particular way, then pay attention to the way you dress.

You may attract unwanted attention if you wear clothing that’s inappropriate to the local culture. Observe what people are wearing around you and these tips should help point you in the right direction before you arrive.

The following suggestions are based on the perspective of a local born in Moscow.

What to pack for Russia if you’re going to any of the parks:

what-to-pack-for-russia

Blouse | Shorts |  Hat | Scarf | Watch | Sunglasses | Purse  | Flats

  • Flat sandals or flats
  • Dressy shorts or a midi skirt (no shorter than one hand above the knee)
  • A nice blouse
  • A crossbody bag
  • A hat and sunglasses
  • Jewelry and a watch

If you’ll be staying out all day into the evening, wearing layers is key. Pack a shawl or a cardigan for romantic walks next to the Moscow River.

Pro tip: Take a mosquito repellent just in case and apply sun protection wherever you go.

Read this post to find out our stylish strategies on how to layer clothes !

What not to wear:

As a local, I wouldn’t recommend wearing flip flops, short shorts, mini skirts, bright makeup, or see-through clothes. It’s a good idea not to show cleavage, unless you have a layer underneath. Choose understated jewelry instead of flashier pieces.

What to pack for Russia if you’re going to a festival:

Dress |  Hat  | Umbrella |  Crossbody  | Earrings | Lipstick | Watch |  Flats

  • A nice day dress
  • A pair of comfortable wedges
  • A light purse
  • A scarf for the evening
  • Light jewelry
  • Light makeup (bronzer, mascara, lip gloss, blush)
Find out the top ten wedges readers recommend!

Travel shoes:

Flats  |  Wedge |  Oxfords

If you’d like to explore Moscow, then comfortable shoes are a must!

The summer weather is pretty predictable. Based on that, you’ll need three pairs of shoes. One to explore the city, a pair to wear in your hotel room, and something for going out. Think: wedges, dressy flats with a thick sole, and flip-flops.

What are the most comfy shoes? These experts are giving you the inside scoop on their twenty-one top picks. Take a look !

What to pack for Russia if you’re going to enjoy dinner and a ferry ride along the Moscow River:

what-to-pack-for-russia

Top  | Skirt | Jacket |  Sunglasses  |  Wedge  |  Lipstick  | Clutch | Earrings

  • A midi skirt or cropped dressy pants
  • A dressy blouse
  • Comfortable but dressy shoes
  • An evening clutch
  • A jacket for any unexpected chill

Make sure your clothes are clean and neat, and that there are no flashy colors or over-the-top prints.

Summer is also a perfect opportunity to take a short trip to St. Petersburg, one of the most iconic cities in the world. It’s full of heritage, architecture, galleries, and art, even for the most discerning travelers and art lovers. You can get there by train or plane. Whichever is in your budget, pack with comfort and style in mind!

Whether you’re spending a summer abroad or finally taking that vacation you’ve been dreaming about for years, TFG has the ultimate long term packing list for your European adventures !

What to pack for Russia for a 3-day getaway to St. Petersburg:

what-to-pack-for-russia

Dress  |  Earrings | Clutch | Wedge |  Cardigan  | Tank  | Pants |  Flats | Purse  |  Blouse  | Pants | Jacket |  Scarf | Hat | Flats

  • Day/night dress that’s easy to dress up or down with some jewelry
  • Comfortable flats to explore the city in
  • A change of clothes that covers your knees and shoulders
  • A scarf and sweater for when the city becomes cooler during the evening
  • A windbreaker
  • Everyday jewelry
  • A hat to protect yourself from the sun
  • A small umbrella
These are the most cute and comfortable ballet flats for travel!

Some museums and churches might refuse service or admission if shoulders and knees are uncovered. I also recommend avoiding jean cutoffs and tank tops, as they may get unwanted attention.

When entering any religious building modesty should be considered, these tips will help you learn how to pack!

Shopping tips:

Moscow has every single store you could think of! From global luxury brands to everyday wear, it caters to many budgets.

If you want to arrive during sale season, then arrive one to two months before the end of the season. You can pick up European-made goods cheaper than in North America. Good shopping malls include Afimall located in Moscow City (another must see) and Evropeiskii located at Kievsky train station.

I’m traveling to Moscow in five days and was wondering if I should really not wear shorts. I’ve been to Nizhny Novgorod in the summer and Moscow in the winter so I have a few ideas about what to wear, but I thought that shorts wouldn’t be so bad.

New to the charter market, the 59m/194ft motor yacht ‘Lady Luck’ will consider charters in Croatia  in early July before heading to Italy and the French Riviera for the remainder of the summer season.

Delivered in 2009, Lady Luck combines an opulent interior from fashion house Fendi, unrivalled Benetti craftsmanship and sumptuous deck areas. The embodiment of luxury and equipped with the latest amenities, she is a perfect choice for cruising the Mediterranean  this summer.

Sure to become the hub of any charter vacation is the serene sundeck. Take a dip in the Jacuzzi or soak up the glorious sun on the oversized sun pads before enjoying a delicious lunch and cocktail from the bar under the shade of a canopy.

There is also a luxe lounging area, perfect for sitting back with a book or socialising with friends and family, all against the backdrop of Croatia ’s idyllic Dalmatian Coast or in a glittering port along the French Riviera .

An expansive beach club ensures guests can get even closer to the turquoise waters of the region and the nearby sauna continues the relaxation experience. Plus, the upper deck aft also boasts a glamorous alfresco dining setup.

Cream, white and gold hues are used extensively throughout the interior of charter yacht Lady Luck, joined by dazzling finishes of 24 carat gold, mother of pearl and diamonds.

The main salon features plush yet comfortable lounging areas as well as a formal dining option, looked over by a glittering chandelier. A spiral staircase in the lobby wraps its way round a gold-plated elevator and the skylounge houses a more relaxed lounge with a bar and games table.

Three double cabins and one twin cabin fan out from a central lobby on the deck below, while a VIP suite is in a prime position on the bridge deck.

Other highlights of the motor yacht  include a fully-equipped gymnasium on the sundeck and a plethora of water toys, including Waverunners, Sea-Bobs, waterskis, wakeboards and dive equipment.
