Advanced Materials & Processes

Carbon-Fiber Hardtop

The four-pillar hardtop was skillfully engineered to provide a lower center of gravity in order to increase performance, yet not compromise comfort or aesthetics. This all carbon-fiber hardtop features double curvature, a frameless clear-laminated safety glass for wind protection, integrated flood lights, boarding handrails, ambient lighting, and a telescopic sun shade.

State-Of-The-Art Helm

The Thunder’s advanced helm features dual, flush-mounted, 24” Garmin multifunction displays mounted on a nano-coated instrument panel that is heat, reflection, and fingerprint resistant. All guests will be able to enjoy the navigation details, and feel the all-powerful performance of the 52’ Thunder due to the multiple Garmin displays throughout the vessel. Additionally, the helm includes integrated cup and phone holders, stainless steel grab bars, and a side electric sliding door. Digital Switching

The meticulously designed digital system permits the owner to control almost any function of the 52' Thunder with ease. It allows simplistic controls such as sequentially starting all six engines with the push of a button. The Garmin Convenience Package also distributes three additional displays throughout the Thunder, experience is always a touch of a button away.

Lighting Without Limits

All RGB ambient lighting can be digitally controlled through the multifunctional Garmin displays. It powers LED lighting throughout the deck with infinite color variations. This technology extends seamlessly into an underwater RGB system to create the perfect ambiance for a night out on the water. Profile: On Board The Bold New Cigarette 52 Thunder Center Console

Given the chance to experience Cigarette Racing Team ’s 52 Thunder luxury performance center console, you should jump at it—even if that means taking a five-hour red-eye flight from Northern California, spending about an hour on the brand-new 52-footer off Coral Gables, Fla., the following morning and catching the last flight home from Miami that evening. That’s what I did earlier this week and it was beyond worth the effort and sleep deprivation.

To hell with tired, I’ll sleep when I’m dead. That was just plain fun .

The latest addition to the Cigarette Racing Team luxury center console series, the 52 Thunder fits between the 59 Tirranna and the 42 Auroris models.

Of course, I had added incentive to make the trip. John Tomlinson, my favorite powerboat test-driver and longtime marine industry colleague, joined me on board, as did Cigarette president Erik Christiansen, another longtime friend who I got to know when he was the general manager of Mercury Racing years before he joined the Opa-locka, Fla., go-fast center console and sportboat company. So it’s safe to say I was in great, knowledgeable hands when we departed a private dock in the posh South Florida community headed into the open ocean.

But even without Tomlinson and Christiansen in the mix, I’d have been there. Powered by six Mercury Racing 500R outboard engines, the 52 Thunder center console is the first Cigarette model introduced by the company since the Ruiz family took over the famed sportboat and center console brand in 2021. That alone made the new creation newsworthy.

“This is something we have been working on since we got here,” said Cristina Ruiz, the company’s chief marketing officer. “We are definitely really proud of it.”

As well she should be. From performance to features, the 52 Thunder is a delightful boat. It’s also a successful first new model for the company principals, as according to Christiansen the Cigarette already has 32 orders for it.

Not bad for a “tweener” model with at $3.1 million sticker—as hull No. 1 is equipped—but then the 52-footer isn’t your average tweener.

“The Cigarette fleet needed something to fill the gap between the 42 Auroris and the 59 Tirranna,” Cristina Ruiz explained. “Really what we did was take all the best parts of all the Cigarette boats built over time and perfected that ‘middle ground.’ We have people who want them as yacht tenders. We have people who just want to use them to take out their families. The 52 Thunder can fit into a lot of different niches, and that is something we really needed. So we poured all of our energy into research and development and making sure that it is top of the line, best in class and fits with the Cigarette DNA.”

Feature After Feature Like its 59-foot sister-ship, the 52 Thunder has a 14-foot beam. The two boats also share a few styling cues, notably around the hardtop and overall profile. But where the Tirranna looks and feels more like a luxury sport yacht, the 52 Thunder is an all-purpose, sporty dayboat. And one that’s loaded with amenities.

The 52 Thunder is ever so slightly more “console-forward” than the 59 Tirranna. That enabled the Cigarette design crew to maximize cockpit space aft of the second row of shock-mitigating, multi-position bolsters. When fully opened by an electric actuator, the boat’s SureShade top covered the entire rear section of the cockpit to the aft gunwale. The boat’s rear and forward-facing lounges aft of the bolsters converted to an expansive sunpad.

Thanks to a table that rose from the sole with a push of a button, those lounges also could be used to accommodate six to eight people for al fresco dining. The fully equipped outdoor kitchen between the aft-most lounge and transom included a grill, a stainless-steel, cleverly hidden wastebaskets and storage drawers in a molded console. Rather than squander precious stowage space in the outdoor kitchen area, the builder mounted sliding-draw-style refrigerator/freezers in the base of the aft-facing lounge.

Cigarette made optimal use of space when it came to locating refrigerators and freezers in the 52-footer’s cockpit.

Christiansen joked that he was shooting to use “as many actuator-rams” as he could on the boat, and by his own estimate the 52 Thunder has 30 of them. They include rams for the power-activated wind-dams in each walkway alongside the console, as well as for a pair in the seatbacks for forward-facing passengers in the open-bow.

Cool amenities, to be sure, but Tomlinson’s favorites and mine were the deep, draining lockers in the gigantic swim platform ahead of the outboards. Cigarette left the sides of the water-level platform open for easy boarding and debarking. Swimmers also could re-board the center console on its starboard side via a dive door and a folding swim ladder.

Yet in terms of cool factor, nothing could touch the power-activated section of sole at the driver’s position. Press a button and the driver standing on that section of sole “gets taller.” Set up in a glass-cockpit configuration with three 22-inch Garmin GPS units, the helm station also boasted two Mercury Marine VesselView readouts in an angled section of the top interior—an excellent use of space borrowed from the 42 Auroris. A quick glance up was all it took for the boat’s driver and co-pilot to gather vital VesselView-provided information.

There was power-adjustable seating for four in the shock-mitigating helm station row of bolsters and seating for three in the bolster row behind it. Much of the shock-mitigating hardware—including the shocks themselves—was visible depending on the angle of the viewer. That created a futuristic, even edgy look in keeping with 52-footer’ overall modern and aggressive styling.

“Some people really like that look and others might not,” Christiansen explained. “But we are working on pieces that will hide some of that hardware from view.”

Like the full-berth cabin with an enclosed head locker and shower, the cockpit had its own air-conditioning system powered by a diesel generator. For tunes, the builder supplied a 5,000-watt JL Audio stereo system with 32 speakers, several of which were recessed into upholstered pads or completely hidden. Christiansen said his goal is to hide all speakers in future 52-footers.

“I wasn’t expecting to see so many creature comforts,” Tomlinson said, then shook his head and smiled. “They were everywhere you looked, and everything was really well-thought-out.”

That, too, made perfect sense as Jamie Borg of Florida-based Cutting Edge Interiors handled the 52-footer’s interior layout and upholstery work.

For Tomlinson and Trulio, the 52-footer’s swim platform setup may have been their favorite amenity of the 52 Thunder.

Where Spirited Meets Docile At 33,000 pounds as tested, Cigarette 52 Thunder No. 1 wasn’t exactly svelte—and that was with its 880-gallon fuel tank 200 gallons shy of full capacity. (The boat’s dry weight is 29,000 pounds.) And yet Tomlinson described the 52-footer as “a blast to drive.”

“It’s a sporty runabout, but it’s a 52-foot sporty runabout,” he said. “If you need to whip a U-turn, you whip a U-turn the same way you would in a runabout—except you’re doing it in a 52-foot boat that is 14 feet wide. The 52 Thunder runs like a nimble, quick center console, but it’s a whole lot of boat.”

Cigarette set up the six supercharged outboards with mixed propeller rotations and 1.6:1 gear ratios. The two outside props turn outward, while the inner four wheels rotate inward.

Our boat topped out at 79 mph with the six outboards—some 3,000 hp worth—turning approximately 6,500 rpm. The telltale on the Garmin GPS showed a top speed of 83 mph, and we certainly didn’t doubt it given our significant fuel level and four-passenger load (Cigarette marketing team member Kim Sewell also joined us to answer questions during our test session.)

The 52 Thunder is a rather nimble boat, especially for its considerable mass.

From a standing start, the 52 Thunder came on plane in seven seconds. It remained on plane at 27 mph with the tabs up and also held a level running attitude at 16 mph with the tabs down. The center console cruised at 60 mph with the outboards turning 5,200 rpm and 50 mph with them turning 4,700 rpm.

“When you’re running at 50 or 60 mph you feel like you’re cruising at 30 mph,” Tomlinson said. “I like that.”

Another cool feature for operators? Mercury Marine’s latest generation of throttle and shifters can start all six engines sequentially with the push of one button. A push of the same button shuts down all six engines simultaneously.

Said Tomlinson, “I wasn’t expecting to see so many creature comforts.

A bit of a surprise to Christiansen and me, Tomlinson didn’t have much experience with the boat’s Seakeeper gyroscopic stabilization system. But after putting it to the test a few times in the tame 1- to 1-1/2-foot rollers outside, Tomlinson—no stranger to rolling sea conditions as an all-time great offshore racing throttleman—became an instant fan of the Seakeeper product.

Our outing ended much too soon. Christiansen and Tomlinson had to get back to work, and I had a story to write and, though much later, a flight to catch.

“These big center consoles like the 52 Thunder, they are turning into high-performance yachts,” Tomlinson said, then chuckled, just before he dropped me at Miami’s ever-frantic international airport. “Or maybe they are high-performance boats with yacht-style features. You could load up this boat with a dozen people and cruise to the Bahamas at 55 mph, no problem.”

No problem indeed. In fact, I can come back next week.

But I think I’ll need to stay an extra day or so.

In addition to being offered with six Mercury Racing 500R outboards, the 52 Thunder is available with quad V-12 Mercury Marine 600 Verados.

The KAAMA Racing Team consisted of Betty Cook as driver, John Connor as crew chief & throttleman, various navigators as well as engineering partner Peter Weismann.

The team ran 4 different boat hulls, a 36’ Cigarette, a 38’ Scarab, a 38’ Cougar catamaran and a 38’ Formula catamaran, all set-up and modified by John Connor.

36' CIGARETTE

The 36-foot Cigarette was like many boat designs that followed, the origin of countless offshore victories. 

Famous for winning the legendary Cowes-Torquay-Cowes offshore race, the boats design quickly became noted on the racecourse and in the news.

KAAMA Racing consequently set up an engineering workshop in its parent company KUDU AEROSEACRAFT INC. and started developing their own drivetrain and power systems.

The 38-foot Scarab is by far one of the most recognised hull designs in the world and respected because of its light weight and high speeds.

Initially engineered by John Connor as replacement for the Cigarette hull, the first Scarab hull was built by Larry Smith for KAAMA Racing. 

Once licensed to Wellcraft the design set out to become an absolute powerboat best-seller  and gained further notoriety through its appearance in the TV series "Miami Vice".

The 38-foot Cougar catamaran was equipped with twin 482 Mercruiser putting out more than 700 hp each. These engines were modified by KAAMA Marine Engineering Inc., the racing teams own development and production company for engines and propulsion systems.

The catamaran was capable of speeds exceeding 100mph in ideal water conditions, thus secured the team their second World Championship in Venice, Italy in 1979.

38' FORMULA

In the 1980‘s KAAMA Racing Team accepted sponsorship from Michelob Light for a number of races and introduced a new 38-foot Formula Hull.

the team ran several races as well as multiple Top-Speed runs with this particular hull. The innovative Kevlar 49 structure became test-bench for KAAMA surface drive applications.

Formula later offered "KAAMA Special Edition" upgrades for their performance line of recreational powerboats.

KAAMA MARINE ENGINEERING

In addition to the famous racing team the company developed KAAMA performance engines and surface drive systems.

During his involvement with KAAMA Racing, throttleman and crew chief John Connor and Peter Weismann co-developed the KAAMA surface drive. The company continued to release and sell their own products, as special performance upgrades for pleasure boats.

Next to the in-house developed KAAMA engines, Betty Cook and John Connor race-tested all their products in the open class and ran the drives on both their KAAMA scarab 38 and Formula catamaran. Their race boats were perfect test benches for speed assessment, efficiency and durability.

KAAMA MARINE for MERCRUISER

The KAAMA Racing Team shares a long history with Mercruiser, having run their engines and drives in a majority of their races. The KAAMA boats were also test bench for many innovative technologies that, once proven on the racecourse became production standard.

From hull materials such as 49 Kevlar, to engine and propulsion systems by Mercruiser, KAAMA acted as exclusive development partner, always willing to put new technologies to the test.

The team regularly used Mercruiser’s “Lake X” facility for test runs and configurations assessments. Betty Cook and KAAMA were featured in several Mercruiser Advertisements.

KAAMA SPECIAL EDITIONS

The popular TV Series “Riptide” featured a Scarab powered by KAAMA Power Systems

The international success in the offshore arena paired with KAAMA MARINE's own product development lead to several product partnerships, extending the brands reach and introducing their race-proven developments to the consumer market.

Wellcraft licensed KAAMA's original 38' design (Scarab) from Larry Smith to manufacture several variants of the record-breaking hull. KAAMA MARINE upgrades became popular options to increase the boats performance, speed and efficiency. A combination of the 425 KAAMA engine and KAAMA surface drive, were popular upgrades for many Wellcraft owners. Consequently Wellcraft introduced a limited KAAMA Special Edition, which was fully equipped with KAAMA hardware, a choice of "competition type" engine variants and drives. 

Formula stepped up thier partnership with KAAMA Racing Team by following Wellcraft and also introducing KAAMA Edition Formula boats. These boats were offered with exclusive paint jobs and the KAAMA surface drive system.

Up until today many Wellcraft and Formula models are still equipped with the KAAMA surface drive after having been run for more than 25 years.

Ultimately Chris-Craft engaged in a partnership with KAAMA Racing in order to set up a Mississippi River speed record. The catamaran was set up by KAAMA MARINE and powered by KAAMA POWER SYSTEMS engines and drives.

AMG's New Cigarette Boat Makes 2250 HP from 5 Supercharged V-8s

The 41 Nighthawk Black Series is the aquatic kin to the new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series.

• This year, it's the Cigarette Racing 41 Nighthawk Black Series, which has 2250 horsepower from supercharged Mercury Racing V-8s , and the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, with 720 hp from one twin-turbo V-8.
• We got a ride in it in the Florida Keys, but the Nighthawk has already been sold. Better luck next year.

When your boat has 2250 horsepower and can do 90 mph, you don't get passed very often. But down in the Florida Keys, a channel in the mangroves might occasionally disgorge an MTI catamaran into Barnes Sound, its owner intent on proving that its twin 1350-horsepower 9.0-liter turbo V-8s are more potent than the five supercharged V-8s on the stern of the Cigarette Racing 41 Nighthawk Black Series. We're cruising at at easy 42 mph, Cigarette president Erik Christiansen at the helm, when the MTI appears on our stern, closing at perhaps an 80-mph speed differential. The guy probably expects a race, but Christiansen doesn't touch the throttles as the MTI rips past at about 120 mph. Christiansen came to Cigarette from Mercury Racing, and a thought occurs to me: "Didn't you design the 1350 engine?" I ask. "Yes," he replies, cracking a slight smile. The guy on the MTI has no idea he just flexed on the one person on Earth least likely to be impressed by fast boats in general, and Mercury Racing 1350s in particular.

This boat, wearing orange and black AMG livery, is the 13th collaboration between Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette, and it's meant to evoke the new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series. When I'd heard there was another AMG boat in the works, I'd figured it might have Mercury's new 600-horsepower V-12 Verados on the stern. After all, four of those would deliver even more horsepower than the five 450Rs on this boat. But Christiansen explains that the V-12s aren't exactly right for a boat that's twinned to a 720-hp track car like the GT Black Series.

"Those engines are heavy, about 1300 pounds each, and they're designed for heavy boats," he says. "Their gearboxes are huge, so they're blasting a bigger hole in the water. And they have counterrotating props, which aren't as good for really high-speed applications." I'm sure that once Mercury Racing rolls out a supercharged version of the V-12, we'll find out how many of those can fit on the stern of a Cigarette, but for now the 450R is more in keeping with the go-fast mission.

Most Nighthawk 41s max out at four engines, but for the AMG boat, Cigarette reduced the transom spacing and found room for one more seat at the party. So, while Mercury offers joystick control for many of its outboards, that's not an option here—the packaging is too tight. But I think docking the old-fashioned way—using steering, throttle, and muttered incantations to King Neptune—is a fair trade to gain an extra 450 horsepower.

Considering its size, the Nighthawk hull is lightweight, checking in at 15,600 pounds. Like its Mercedes cousin, there's plenty of carbon fiber—that whole hard top, in fact. Unlike the GT Black Series, there's a bathroom. And a bed. Which are two of the many reasons that the boat doesn't quite match the car's 17-mpg EPA combined rating. But it does get about one mile per gallon at 50 mph or so, a speed at which the superchargers still haven't awakened. That's a fast center console when you're not even in the boost at 50 mph.

Over the past decade or so, a collaboration between Cigarette and Mercedes came to be an annual thing, starting with the 46-foot Rider XP and SLS AMG in 2010. Cigarette owner Skip Braver recently sold the company to Miami attorney and entrepreneur John Ruiz, and while there was no official announcement on future AMG-Cigarette collaborations, building one AMG boat per year seems like a no-brainer. But if you have the means and want a new AMG boat, you'll have to wait for next year. This one is already sold.

Smoke On The Water

Famous for its offshore boats, Cigarette also produces fast, open boats that meet the needs of a more versatile and family-friendly program. The 39′ GTS thus offers space and a number of possibilities while keeping its sporty soul. Be careful, it will rock you!

Besides the offshore boats, the legendary brand has developed a large family of open boats or considered open but with more or less space depending on the model. To design this series, the yard relied on its expertise particularly about the hulls, redrawing slightly to give them a little more roominess. They also completely reviewed the layout, opting for an open concept. The 39’ GTS, the “small” ‘model of the series, follows this recipe. Starting with a beautiful hull, the engineers have offered a wider size than the Performance Boats series.

Therefore, if we are able to find the characteristic racy line, the boat offers, in addition, a nice hardtop that provides valuable protection against the sun or rain. The cockpit is organized around three distinct spaces. The front space has seats and a double “lounge” seat in front of the console. If necessary, you can install a table in the middle (optional) for a glass of champagne at the marina or for a picnic in a deserted cove. Obviously, the seats hide a few storage compartments and there is also a floor box. Some good points are the side upholstery, the omnipresent handrails and the perfect integration of speakers.

The Offshore Spirit is Still Very Present

On the back, the cockpit itself occupies a significant area allowing for a little bit of fishing. Attached to the transom, a bench made of three semi-bucket seats ensures comfort and support during the fast runs. In addition, the starboard side has a door for easy access to the bathing platform. This platform is large enough to receive up to four engines even if the boat is offered with two or three engines. Our configuration of the day was with 4 x 350 HP Verado. Facing the rear bench, two other seats positioned on the back of the leaning post allow for more conviviality as far as just below, there is a large cooler. It’s a pity that these seats are a little high for normal size people. The floor has three boxes and two of them can be used as fish tanks. Finally, the 39′ GTS gives way to the trend by offering a very practical side door.

The central space is reserved for the driving area, and in this domain, Cigarette is a master. The crew can take advantage of the three adjustable seats with a folding part. Each of them has an individual and foldable footrest and the driving position is just perfect. In the center, the pilot has all the controls on hand. If you are audacious, you can even play it in a racing way with a throttleman who deals with the throttle and trim while you’re driving. The console also incorporates three large screens, the Mercury vessel view and buttons used to configure the entire boat, the engine settings, the cabin lighting, the lift or the courtesy lights. Other good points again are the handrails, solid and well located; the windshield, very effective and the anti-slip foot plate which also evokes the offshore world.

The console is quite large on the front. This dimension allows it to house a real cabin with a toilet, a sink, a double bed and storage. Maybe a little bit too small for a cruise, but it is large enough to store the equipment or to take a nap. It’s a pity we don’t have more natural lighting.

Quite sober, this cabin is well finished and overall, the boat offers a very flattering presentation. With padding of the inner flanks, it is quite rare. The equipment is also complete with courtesy lighting, tanks and beautifully made upholstery. However, the boat can be largely customized when you purchase it to obtain a unique configuration.

1,400 HP Ready to Rock the Sea!

With an attractive exterior, it is in action that the Cigarette makes the most difference. Like all boats of the brand, the 39′ GTS uses a hull profile that is particularly well designed. Rather narrow for the length of the boat, the hull has a very sharp V with two oversized strakes and a very pronounced bilge. Then come two very deep steps directly inherited from the brand’s offshore racing hulls. The flatter rear part ensures stability and an optimal water flow to the propeller. The engines are installed on a bracket to improve behavior and performance of the boat. Everything here has been thought of for performance and efficiency and the tall sides and the high bow ensure the safety of the crew and keep everyone dry.

Once the controller is in hand, you don’t need to wait for a long time before the magic operates, especially with our configuration of the day, 4 x 350 hp Mercury Verado. These 1400 HP are just waiting for the start signal. Well balanced, the boat sails quickly without rearing outrageously, allowing for full visibility during the acceleration phase. Then, everything happens very quickly. After fully planing, we are already well above 23 mph and the speedometer needle climbs without fail. At 4000 rpm, we are already at more than 50 mph which makes it possible to obtain a cruising speed at 4500 rpm, around 55 mph. The rest is just literature, since at 5000 rpm we reach 63 mph and the game ends that day with 78 mph on the GPS, the weather and traffic on the Hudson River limiting our ardor while the boat clearly has the ability to spin beyond 80 mph. The most important thing is not the speed, but rather the ease with which the boat sails, providing total comfort to the passengers. Even more surprising is that our boat was equipped with the Active Trim, the Mercury system which offers an automatic and autonomous adjustment of the trim. While we thought this accessory was reserved for small units, it is wonderful here even if it only works for speeds above 25 mph. Another good surprise is the curve behavior, often a weak point for step hulls, but here, it is clear that the curves come easily one after another and that the radius of gyration is even quite tight, offering this boat a little more versatility.

Of course, you don’t need 4 x 350 HP to take advantage of this boat. With 3 x 350 HP or maybe 3 x 300 HP, you will already get good results and this also offers the advantage of providing a little more space on the swim platform.

When excellence meets rational, it gives great results and this 39′ GTS Cigarette is a good example. If the boat keeps up its performance and extraordinary hull, the layout offers a convivial space to spend the day with family or friends, all with class and sportiness.
