Roar Offshore makes splashy return

Fired-up engines make waves on fort myers beach, by nathan mayberg - editor | oct 14, 2021.

offshore powerboat races fort myers beach

With crowds lined up along northern Fort Myers Beach, the powerboats of Roar Offshore National Championship were enthusiastically welcomed back to town with a parade, street festival and ultimately racing itself.

Even the shorebirds lined up along the beach to see what the commotion was about as the sounds of the loud engines blasting away on the Gulf of Mexico Saturday.

If an award was given before the racing for most impressive boat, it would certainly have gone to the catamaran of team M-CON, which captured the Super Cat divisional championship for the Kansas-based team with its performance Saturday following an early afternoon downpour which briefly delayed the racing.

Dressed in pink, the crew and team paid tribute to team owner Tyler Miller’s late sister Jaimie, whose name is featured prominently on the boat. She died in December after a bout with breast cancer.

“We’re racing in memory of her,” Miller said. “We’re trying to keep her alive through offshore racing.”

Matt Tillman, who was part of the large M-CON team attending the races, brought his two children to the competition. He said the group was a “bunch of friends that all like boating and racing and we all help out.”

Miller, who owns an underground utility company, said “it takes a big crew to get it all together.” The new boat the team is racing this year cost more than $1 million to build along with pricey upkeep. The crew carries a spare engine with them to the races.

“There is a lot of logistics. It takes six to eight people to keep this running,” Miller said. “We’re blessed to have a great group of people with us.”

Miller was last in Fort Myers Beach for the races in 2019. He said he enjoys the “fans and the crowd” on Fort Myers Beach. “It’s a beautiful town.”

Tim Hill, who helped bring back the Roar Offshore power races with his wife Cyndee to Fort Myers Beach in 2019, and again this year, said the championship racing was just as well attended as last time.

“We picked up right where we left off in 2019,” Mr. Hill said. Hill said the turnout was the largest of any race site for the year in the Roar Offshore competition. “The attendance was just as good or better (than 2019),” he said.

Brian Guy, the driver of Team Jackhammer’s Class 7 boat, brought his daughter Kora to the races with him. Guy’s team second in Class 7 and third in the super stock division Saturday of the Roar Offshore National Championship on Fort Myers Beach.

Guy said the conditions on the Gulf of Mexico were “a little sporty” due to the waves from the oncoming rainstorm. Guy said the last turn was particularly tight, leading some boats to roll over. “A lot of (drivers) took it harder than they should have,” he said.

A native of Palmetto who runs an irrigation and landscaping company, Guy said he just started racing three months ago. “I grew up around boats my whole life,” he said.

Grant Greytok, co-owner and driver of the GNS powerboat, finished second in Class 4 Saturday. The Texas-based team brought a large contingent with them to Fort Myers Beach, including crew chief and throttle man Bill Reeves who has been partnering with Greytok on powerboats since the 1990’s.

“To me, it’s the biggest thrill in the world,” Greytok said before the awards ceremony outside the Lani Kai Island Resort.

He and Reeves bought their current boat in 2019 and rebuilt it. “Every race has gotten better and better,” Greytok said. Greytok said his boat got into a tight spot on the first turn Saturday while in between powerboats. “We got hosed down,” he said. Greytok estimated 200 gallons of water landed on his deck off the turn. “I thought I was going to down,” he said. He and Reeves recovered, though their intercom and GPS went out from the water deluge.

Greytok, who is a senior construction project manager, said it’s expensive to race. “It’s a lot of money and a lot of time. I’m extremely lucky.” Eddie Jacobs, who has helped support the team with transporting the boat and working on repairs, said Greytok “has a lot of good friends” to help. “I know enough about engines to be dangerous,” Jacobs said.

Greytok said the powerboat racing community is like “one family. They will give you the shirt off their back. They will you give you anything in their pits to help you.”

Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce President Jacki Liszak said the championship was a big deal “after what we’ve had to go through over the last year and a half. It’s been kind of a crazy year.”

The festival of racing was the biggest event on Fort Myers Beach since the pandemic hit last year and canceled a host of parades and festivals.

“It’s super phenomenal to welcome it back again,” Liszak said. “It’s great to see everybody out and enjoying each other.”

As for the organizers of the event, they have their eyes set on next year already. “We look forward to doing this next year, and the next year and the next 20 years,” Mr. Hill said.

Inaugural Roar Offshore brings powerboats to Fort Myers Beach

offshore powerboat races fort myers beach

Do you like big boats and cannot lie?

Then the Inaugural OPA National Championship at Fort Myers Beach in mid-October may just be the wind in your sails.

The Roar Offshore multi-day event will feature powerboat racing , a parade, a race village and live entertainment. The championship is the culmination of five preliminary races and will feature several different race classes broken down by speed, size and engines. It runs Oct. 10-12 and is free to attend.

The races are being organized by Tim and Cindy Hill and Mike Shepard. Tim and his wife Cindy operate the nonprofit Ft. Myers Offshore .

“I’ve been an avid powerboat race fan for probably 15-20 years,” Tim Hill said. “I attended races across the country, and to have the opportunity to bring these teams to our hometown — and to the beach at a time that is typically slow — and bring an economic impact means a lot.”

The Hills said they are expecting between 50,000 – 60,000 people throughout the three-day event.

When Sarasota hosted its 36th annual powerboat racing event, the city generated $29.6 million after its multi-day event that hosted 20,000 people,Tim Hill said.

October is a slower time for the island, said Fort Myers Beach Mayor Anita Cereceda.

“It’s huge,” she said. “It’s a weekend of excitement; everyone likes things that go fast.”

Cereceda said she’s looking forward to welcoming people who have not visited the island before.

Jackie Liszak, president and CEO of the Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce, said this is the first year since 2006 that an event like this has been on the island.

“It’s a huge boost for business in what is typically a slow time of year,” she said. “(It will bring) thousands of folks to beach and introduce our community to a wider audience. It’s awesome for us.”

Events kick off Thursday, Oct. 10, with a 10 a.m. ribbon cutting ceremony at Salty Sam’s Marina where the Race Village will house the racing boats.

“I think everybody is very excited about it,” said Salty Sam’s marketing director David Kasten. “It’s a great time of year and the town could certainly use a boost. There’s a lot of excitement out there and it should be a very positive thing for the community.”

The Race Boat Parade will begin at 5:45 p.m. Oct. 10 followed by revelry throughout the night in the Entertainment District of the town.

On Friday, attendees can head to the Race Village at Salty Sam’s to meet the racers and check out all the boats. Live entertainment continues throughout the day and evening.

Races begin at 11 a.m. Saturday. Class 1 – 7 races kick off the competition, with Superstock, Super Vee Extreme, Prostock V races starting at 12:30.

Supercat, Class One and Vee Extreme races close out the powerboat events and an award ceremony is planned at 6:30 p.m.

Due to the large amount of traffic expected during the event, Tim Hill and planners have coordinated off-island shuttle services to bring people to the event.

“The biggest thing with anyone coming down is encouraging them to take mass transit,” Liszak said. “We do not recommend driving cars onto the island.”

There will be remote parking at Hammond Stadium at 14100 Ben C. Pratt Six Mile Cypress Parkway in Fort Myers, and the old Big Lots parking lot at 15600 San Carlos Blvd. with shuttles ferrying attendees from both lots, Tim Hill said.

Cindy Hill has prepared informational brochures that will be available at booths at the event. The sheets will outline the Do's and Don’ts of the beach and covers everything from sea turtles to littering.

Sea turtle nesting runs through October, but David Godfrey, executive director of the Sea Turtle Conservancy said October is a good month to hold a beach event.

“When it does come to nesting season, any adult turtles that have traveled here to nest are largely gone by October,” he said.

Eve Haverfield, founder and director of the nonprofit conservation group Turtle Time, said the Coast Guard will have helicopters flying above the water to spot for any sea turtles or manatees that may be in danger of being struck by the powerboats.

"Turtles are air-breathing reptiles and have to come to the surface," she said. "They are not quick enough to get out of the way (if a boat approaches)."

Haverfield said any turtle nests found on the beach prior to the event will be clearly marked and asks any attendees to keep a respectful distance from the cordoned area.

The Roar Offshore event planners had to go through a series of permits with both the town and the county. Tim Hill said they have received all of the signatures from the sign-off agencies, which include the fire department, the sheriff’s department and other local agencies. They are waiting for the town’s permit to be completed at a meeting at the end of September.

Tim Hill said coordinating this event has been a learning curve for all involved but hopes to continue the event every year.

“We want to make it perhaps two days of racing,” he said. “We want to make the race village larger and have it more of a festival with live music and maybe car shows. You know, down the road we may add an air show, too.”

Inaugural Roar Offshore Fun Run Coming In October

Recognizing pent-up demand for organized go-fast boating action in their area, particularly in light of the cancelled second-year Roar Offshore Fort Myers Beach powerboat race, organizers in the Southwest Florida city are launching a new event. Set for October 9-10—the dates originally reserved for the races—the Roar Offshore Fun will open registration early next week.

Lead organizer Tim Hill officially announced the event this morning. Fort Myers-based Nor-Tech Hi-Performance Boat has stepped up as the title sponsor. Nor-Tech will publicly showcase its new 460 Flyer for the first time during the event.

“We are going to open registration and publish details on the Roar Offshore Fort Myers Beach website in a few days,” said Hill. “Our fun run will follow true a poker-run format with organized stops.”

The event will be open to high-performance powerboats of all kinds, including raceboats. To that end, Hill said he will arrange storage for any offshore racing teams that want to leave their boats in Fort Myers Beach in advance of the Offshore Powerboat Association World Championships, which are schedule for November 19-22 in Englewood Beach, Fla.

Speedonthewater.com chief photographer Pete Boden will be on scene, via helicopter, to capture all the action.

Current additional sponsors include Hi-Def Printing, the Westin Cape Coral Resort and Creative Web Builders. Said Hill, “Our benefitting charity will be the Fort Myers Beach Lions Club.”
