Closure of long beach facility.

The marina we operate out of in Long Beach has not been able to negotiate a lease extension with the Hotel Maya and the hotel has decided to close the marina. We are therefore forced to close our Long Beach club and are in the process of moving the fleet back to San Diego. There are unfortunately no other marinas in the Long Beach/Los Angeles harbor that can accommodate the fleet along with an office to run the operation. We regret having to close the Long Beach club but at this point we have no other viable options. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call us at 619-291-7245 or email at [email protected]

Experience of a lifetime. Booked the Sea of Cortez 101, 103, 104, 114 Certification BOOKING: 5 stars Guinevere is super communicative. Though we didn't have certain questions or requests answered, it made sense when we got there. Changes in port locations and boats happened but again, Guinevere contacted me right away to make sure we were good to go. PROVISIONS: 5 stars We were curious what provisions were provided and never got a list. The reason is that it's based on season and availability. The variety of food and beverages provided on the boat was excellent. The only critique I have is that I would portion everything out a little smaller. There were huge 2 lbs balls of frozen fish or shrimp. I was able to portion them all out to have multiple meals however. BOAT: 5 stars Though we were assigned to a smaller boat than I was hoping for, the Vada Louine was an excellent boat to learn on. She was very good to us. SAILING CLASS: 5 stars.... Students: 0 stars Ok, we suck. We did what we were told and got the books and read as much as we could before the class. But never having been on a sailboat ever, it was like reading a foreign language. The classes and certifications was like being fire hosed with information and terms. By the end of the class, though, the reading made more sense. And having the hands-on experience on the catamaran was not only helpful, but invaluable. CAPTAIN JIM (Instructor): 5 stars + 12 jars of crunchy garlic (inside joke) We couldn't ask for a better Captain and instructor. Not only was he a great instructor, but definitely a mentor, a role model, and a confidante. He not only taught us and supported us, he also "rode the waves" of emotions that we went though on this journey--the excitement, stress, fear, and joy. He shared his wisdom, experience, as well as provided us an adventure of a lifetime. I cannot express how great he is--a wonderful instructor and human being. All in all, what an amazing trip, learning experience, vacation. I have and will highly recommend West Coast Multihull to anyone interested in learning. I definitely want to do this class again.

We have just returned from our 5 day trip in La Paz and I really can't say enough about how much we enjoyed it. Ryan was an amazing Captain. He consulted with us more then once a day about where we wanted to go and what we wanted to do. He managed to find some wind so we could sail, which we really enjoyed. He also kept our glasses full, which seemed above and beyond! We felt completely safe at all times and in very good hands. And we were also extremely well fed! Chef Heather really outdid herself with our meals and snacks. We ate 5 times a day! She accommodated our vegetarian daughter beautifully. We enjoyed the food so much we are stealing some of her recipes and ideas to make ourselves. We cruised in Mexico for 5 years on our our boat and it was so much fun to go back and visit the places we had so enjoyed during our cruising days. It was like going home. It was as beautiful and peaceful as we remembered. We spent hours lounging, snorkeling, stand up paddle boarding, playing games and bonding as a family. It is very special when you can get your adult children somewhere that has no internet! They have to talk to you! It is truly priceless. But the best part was, unlike on our boat, we didn't have to worry about captaining the boat or making the food so it was a true vacation! We all really enjoyed that. I would recommend your company to anyone. It was a wonderful trip. Thank you so much for all you did to make it happen. And a big thank you to Ryan and Heather who were truly outstanding!

I took ASA 101 with West Coast Mutihulls. No forced memberships like some of the other places and the instructor RYAN was A- MAZING!!!!! thanks again for teaching me sooo much in such a short time. I wish i would have taken more classes though, i feel addicted to sailing and it was only my 4th time on the water

June 2023: Our 8-day sailing trip with West Coast Multihulls (WCM) turned into a nightmarish experience on day 4 when our captain negligently crashed our boat causing me to sustain a serious head and neck injury, leaving me with lasting emotional trauma. The incident took place around 11:30 in the morning when our boat collided with a large piece of rocky land, causing me to fall backward and hit my head twice during the fall. Fortunately, my friends were unharmed. However, the response to the situation was deeply concerning. Our captain never personally offered any apologies or explanations to me or my husband regarding this incident. The lack of concern from management and the owner of WCM was alarming, as I never received any direct contact from them following the accident until we reached out to them directly, leading me to question their ability to handle such situations and their level of care. Moreover, our captain's negligence was apparent throughout the trip, evident in several poor decisions. Safety protocols were not reviewed with us before or after boarding the boat, and there were several dangerous incidents during the journey, including two stingray stings and one second-degree burn, with no suggestion from the captain to seek medical care. The first-aid kit onboard was inadequately stocked, leaving us ill-prepared when we needed it most. Additionally, we were unsure if there were enough life jackets onboard. The captain's overconfidence, vague communication, and disregard for our safety were deeply troubling. In conclusion, I strongly advise against sailing with West Coast Multihulls. The company's prioritization of profits over customer safety and well-being is evident. Their lack of direct communication from management and the owner during such critical incidents is disconcerting. Even when expressing concerns about the captain's behavior, their response was underwhelming. I urge you to avoid this company, as your safety and well-being should never be compromised for a sailing experience.

We had a fantastic day on San Diego Bay! Thanks to Guinevere, Vicki, Kim, and especially our outstanding Captain Kyle . Chartering the Bali 43' catamaran was fun, relaxing, and made for a wonderful day

Photo of The Princess K.

We had an amazing time this week chartering the Bali 4.3. Most people thought we were nuts, charting a vessel this big for just 2 people but we had the most relaxing, chill time out on the water. We weren't able to sail out to the Coronado Islands due to choppy waters and fear of sea sickness (as we are newbies) but we spent a great day sailing the San Diego and Coronado Bay, learned more about sailing in general (something that we wanted to do), and just really enjoyed the day. We were able to sail for a good portion of the day without motoring so that was pretty amazing. Our captain, Ryan was super awesome. He was friendly, informative, and really knew what he was doing. We'll definitely be chartering and if possible, will request Captain Ryan .. and will hopefully take up sailing lessons at some point as well. Money well spent and a lot of self-care, relaxation, and just "being" ..

catamaran sailing school san diego

We had a group of 12 and rented the Bali 43. Kyle Roberts was our Captain and he did an amazingly job! He was professional and curious and he knew exactly where to take us for a fantastic day on San Diego bay. West Coast Marine made the experience easy and convenient. The Cat was in great shape and provided a very comfortable space for our party of 12 to cut loose and have a great time. I highly recommend using West Coast Charters and Kyle Roberts as your Captain for a great experience on beautiful San Diego bay! Dave F.

Whether you're local to San Diego or not - I can't recommend West Coast Multihulls + Anthony (The Happy Captain) enough. I completed my ASA 104/114 with West Coast + Anthony as the Instructor. I've taken courses at several sailing schools (BVIs, Panama, Los Angeles) and I learned more in the 3 days spent with Anthony as the instructor than I did any other course. Anthony's teaching style is empowering and allows you to teach other people to help you better understand "why" things are done. His passion for the sailing lifestyle is infectious and his 30+ years of on-the-water experience help him make more complicated subjects easy to understand to his students (e.g. for me it was Velocity Made Good). Only warning is after a weekend with West Coast + Anthony, you'll probably want to go buy that boat you've been dreaming about and set sail for the next year. :)

catamaran sailing school san diego

Dropped in for a 2 day ASA 114 certification and had a fantastic experience. Captain Anthony is a fantastic instructor, calm, explains things clearly, lets students learn hands on. He adjusted each day to match the weather and what the students wanted to practice.

Photo of Idaly G.

Our experience with West Coast Multihulls was amazing! I reserved the Leopard 40-Rambling Rose for my party of 10 and it was absolutely perfect, clean and the most affordable in the area. Our captain, Kyle, knew exactly what he was doing and he went above and beyond. He even surprised us with a box of White Claws for our party! (Bachelorette) totally not expected but it goes to show how this business values it's costumers! I will definitely be back.

ASA (American Sailing) Certifications

American Sailing

Earning an ASA certification will become one of your prized accomplishments. Not only does it evidence your new sailing ability to the world, it gives you the confidence to maximize your experience.

Depending on the level of ASA certification you are seeking, we have several packages for you to choose from. Please note that you must be certified at each level before moving to the next.

If you have previous sailing experience and want to jump to Coastal Cruising, you must first challenge the ASA 101 Basic Keelboat written and practical exam. For details on challenges, please call us at 619-316-6430 .

Demonstrated ability to skipper a sloop-rigged, auxiliary powered keelboat (or catamaran, if the course is conducted on such) of approximately 30 to 45 feet in length during a multi-day cruise upon inland or coastal waters in moderate to heavy winds (up to 30 knots) and sea conditions.

Coastal Navigation (105)

On-water coastal navigation skills elements are contained in the ASA103, Basic Coastal Cruising , ASA 104, Bareboat Cruising , and ASA 106, Advanced Coastal Cruising , in progressively increasing levels of detail.

There is no sailing skills requirement to this standard and practical application of this sailing knowledge is found in the ASA 106 Advanced Coastal Cruising standard.

The Bareboat Charter Standard (104) is also a prerequisite and can be attained either by itself prior to BBC Multihull (114) or in conjunction with BBC Multihull (114). In either case, all material in both standards (104 & 114) must be taught and tested before 114 can be awarded.

Docking Endorsement (118)

Able to safely and efficiently dock an auxiliary powered (single inboard or outboard engine) sailboat. Knowledge of basic auxiliary power theory, engine and steering controls, proper use of dock lines, crew communication and safety.

Aolani Logo

LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR AOLANI STORY

It was in 2001 on the sunny shores of Waikiki Beach, Honolulu that Bruno Schwarz decided to center his family business on a sailboat charter. San Diego’s enticing and gorgeous weather made the perfect location and the oceanfront city eventually became Aolani’s birthplace and home. With the help of his daughter Lindsay, Bruno recruited expert catamaran designer Kurt Hughes to craft the Aolani, a gorgeous 58-foot Sunchaser American catamaran. Since their humble beginnings hosting football fans watching Super Bowl XXXVII on their maiden voyage, Bruno and his family have gone on to sail with 75% of all Fortune 500 companies, a remarkable and unparalleled achievement in the boat charter industry.

The Aolani is San Diego’s most versatile vessel, and the only San Diego boat charter that can comfortably fit 48 passengers on the outer deck or in its spacious salon interior. Although it has the benefit of twin 230 horsepower Yanmar turbo diesel engines, the Aolani is primarily a sailboat and the only vessel in San Diego that is Coast Guard certified to sail out onto the open sea without limitation. Wherever you choose to cruise, we get you there quickly with our powerful engine so afterward, you can enjoy the peace and quiet of a majestic, wind-powered sail. Our crew is like family to us, and we think that after you experience one of our amazing day cruises, you will feel like you are part of the family too.

Now that you know a bit more about Aolani, let us help you plan a spectacular event on our beautiful catamaran! Give us a call today! Please refer to our FAQs if you have any questions about the Aolani!

Catamaran Specifications

Designed by renowned catamaran designer Kurt Hughes in Seattle, WA, Aolani Catamaran is a 58’ Sunchaser American Catamaran. We completed building her in 2003. She is 58’ long with a 32’ beam. Sails are approx.. 1500 sq. ft. without spinnaker. US Coast Guard licensed for 48 people, plus crew.  We are certified to sail in the open ocean, most charter boats have to stay within the San Diego Bay.

  • Engines are twin 230 horsepower Yanmar turbo diesels, 10KW generator, full electronics, netting forward, 4 vacuflush heads.
  • Large galley which serves to inside and out, refrigerator and ice-maker, a large interior salon with 360 degree views.
  • 4 standard staterooms: (2 queen and 2 double), and 2 staterooms for captain and crew.
  • Hull is made out of state of the art composite/epoxy, honeycomb and fiberglass, built in a female mold with triaxial woving, light weight vessel for maximum sailing performance.

Originally designed for a capacity of 69 guests, the US Coast Guard certifies these catamarans for 48 guests so there is plenty of space for all guests. You may have all your guests within the cabin interior if it is raining, cold, foggy or windy, or everybody is able to be on the outside. We believe we are the only 48 person sailboat in San Diego where everybody can be on the inside or on the outside at the same time. Aolani is primarily a sailing yacht, however, if you should prefer a motor yacht we will not hoist the sails and then she is a motor yacht. Wouldn’t you rather have the wind in the sails rather than loud, smelly engine interrupt your hours at sea?

San Diego Catamaran Sailing is the number one attraction in Maui, Hawaii and Key West, Florida. Experience the thrill of fast sailing with this lightweight and attractive vessel. When you leave this boat we want you to have experienced a great sailing adventure.

Adventure Without Limits

One of the many things that set us apart from other sailing options in San Diego is that we are Coast Guard certified to sail in the open ocean, not just in the San Diego Bay. This leaves your options wide open for your custom yacht charter. San Diego has many amazing shoreline attractions for day trips, sunset sailing & sunset cruises, as well as unforgettable overnight trips to Catalina Island, where you can anchor for one or more nights and explore that unique, sparsely populated and idyllic island. For the wildlife lover, the months of November through April tend to be perfect for getting up close and personal with Gray, Finback, and even Blue Whales during their southern migration down to Mexico. Other amazing ocean creatures such as pods of dolphins, sharks, sea lions, and seals can be observed year-round as well. Our expertly-trained captain and crew make for a safe and non-disruptive experience for the wildlife, and a smooth and comfortable experience for our guests. On-board, we have modern audio-visual capabilities for corporate presentations or private celebrations with 2 interior flat screen TV’s and surround sound. Options abound for dining onboard the Aolani, from our fine selection of snacks and sandwiches, to gourmet catering from some of San Diego’s favorite restaurants. A full bar of premium liquors and wines is also available!
