Iconic yachts: Inside the story of the 96m legendary superyacht Limitless

It is easy to say that a certain yacht is ‘influential’ but in the case of Carinthia VI (now named The One) you can actually see it. Leslie Wexner, head of Limited Brands, which includes Victoria’s Secret lingerie, so admired Carinthia VI that he asked Jon Bannenberg to design him a yacht that was essentially similar in appearance but much larger and more modern, and this was the starting point for Limitless , launched by Lürssen in 1997.

Carinthia VI had been based on a Lürssen patrol boat hull but for Limitless the shipyard and designer were able to start with a clean sheet and came up with a motor yacht of 96.25 metres. She was one of the largest around at the time, leaving aside Arab state yachts and the immense Lady Moura , and was, in fact, the largest American private yacht when launched. In spite of this, the lines of Limitless clearly mimic those of Carinthia VI , especially the curved front to the superstructure, made from a grid of small windows, and the way the forward lean of the transom matches that of the stem. Another point of similarity lies in the fact that Bannenberg did not want to spoil the lines of the bow with a forward mast, though in this case the solution was to use a retractable carbon fibre mast.

For some reason Wexner did not select Bannenberg as the interior designer – perhaps he found his modernism less than relaxing – instead using the well-known French interior designer François Catroux , whose repertoire included a small number of yachts. In any case, Wexner has never permitted any photographs of the interior to be published, so its style remains conjectural.

Wexner wanted his yacht to be as fast as Carinthia VI – a demanding requirement for such a large vessel. This led to a unique diesel-electric propulsion system being developed for Limitless , designed to allow her to make a transatlantic passage at 25 knots non-stop and a transpacific passage at 20 knots non-stop. One of her transatlantic trips from Nice, France to New York, USA was made in seven days, including a stop in Newport, Rhode Island to clear customs.

The propulsion system was originally designed for Controllable Pitch Propellers, but these were removed from the specification by the builder when new calculations indicated the boat would be 10% over its original calculation. The owner later added the Controllable Pitch Propellers and modifications were made to the diesel-electric system. The yacht’s design made it possible to swap out the propulsion generators through the tender bays by using the yacht’s own tender cranes, and this facility was actually used when a generator failed early in the yacht’s life.

It is fascinating that although Limitless is clearly inspired by Carinthia VI , the yachts are quite different in proportions: Carinthia with her long slim lines and narrow beam against the much larger and beamier Limitless , which looks equally good and arguably more elegant. The relationship between the two yachts is striking and extends down to having an identical dark blue colour scheme on the topsides and white superstructure.

Wexner is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of L Brands, which owns Victoria’s Secret, Pink and Bath & Body Works. The company employs 80,000 and has sales in excess of $13 billion.

Epstein and Wexner have a longstanding intertwined personal and business relationship which includes Epstein buying Wexman’s New York City $70 million townhouse, serving as Wexner's money manager, traveling extensively together and helping Wexner build his $100 million yacht.

Money, Boats, and Businesses

Wexner and his family are listed as having a net worth of $4.7 billion, according to Forbes . He started the company in 1963, when he borrowed money from his aunt to launch the Limited.

Epstein was charged earlier in July by federal prosecutors alleging that the investor sexually abused numerous teenage girls. READ THE INDICTMENT BELOW

“By 1995, Epstein was a director of the Wexner Foundation and Wexner Heritage Foundation and president of Wexner’s N.A. Property Inc., which developed the town of New Albany outside Columbus [Ohio] where Wexner lives. Epstein also played a role in building Wexner’s superyacht, “Limitless,” attending meetings at the boat’s design firm’s London studios,” reports Bloomberg .

The yacht’s home port is listed as Newport, Rhode Island according to CharterWorld — the preeminent site for yacht charters.

GoLocal learned that Wexner’s yacht is not presently in Newport.

Using the global tracking site MarineTraffic.com , GoLocal tracked Limitless to Puerto de Palma in Spain as of Thursday evening.

Limitless was completed in 1997. The 316-foot long yacht has a crew of 20 and sleeps 10.

"Mr. Wexner handed him [Epstein] sweeping powers over his finances, philanthropy and private life, according to interviews with people who knew the men as well as court documents and financial records," reported the NewYork Times on Thursday. "Mr. Wexner authorized him to borrow money on his behalf, to sign his tax returns, to hire people and to make acquisitions. Over the years, Mr. Epstein obtained a New York mansion, a private plane and a luxury estate in Ohio — today valued at roughly $100 million all together — previously owned by Mr. Wexner or his companies. At the same time, he drove a wedge between Mr. Wexner and longtime associates and friends,”

On Thursday, L Brands Inc. announced that its board of directors has hired an outside law firm to conduct a review of financier Jeffrey Epstein’s role at the retail company, reported the Cut.

Wexner joins sitting President Donald Trump and former President Bill Clinton as those who are on the record as friends of Epstein.

As a money manager, Epstein repeatedly claimed he only worked with billionaires, but his friends included actor Kevin Spacey, former Harvard President Larry Summers and attorney for Claus Von Bulow and Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz, who told Vanity Fair in 2011 , “I’m on my 20th book…. The only person outside of my immediate family that I send drafts to is Jeffrey.” 

But while Epstein's friends included America's wealthiest and most influential, it was his friendship with Wexner that was special.

"Yet he [Epstein] does not deny that he and Wexner have a special relationship. Epstein sees it as a partnership of equals. 'People have said it’s like we have one brain between two of us: each has a side.'

'I think we both possess the skill of seeing patterns,' says Wexner. 'But Jeffrey sees patterns in politics and financial markets, and I see patterns in lifestyle and fashion trends. My skills are not in investment strategy, and, as everyone who knows Jeffrey knows, his are not in fashion and design. We frequently discuss world trends as each of us sees them,'" reported Vanity Fair.

Today, Epstein is being held in federal prison. He reportedly was attacked or tried to commit suicide this week.

A General Description of Motor Yacht LIMITLESS

From the Lurssen Yachts yacht builder in Germany the LIMITLESS is 96 m 316 (ft) in length. Christened by 1997 her interior decoration showcases the realisations of Tim Heywood / Francois Catroux. Superyacht LIMITLESS is able to accommodate up to 10 people with 20 professional crew. She is able to reach a maximum speed of 25 knots.

Motor yacht LIMITLESS was built for Les Wexner, an American businessman who gained his success from being the chairman and CEO of the Limited Brands corporation best known for its brand Victoria's Secret. LIMITLESS has several unique features including an F-16 joystick control at her helm, a "dolphin cam" in her bow, and lights encompassing her waterline. Wexner reportedly considers the interior his private domain and will not release photos to the media.

Construction & Design of Luxury Yacht LIMITLESS

Lurssen was the naval architect involved in the professional vessel composition for LIMITLESS. Also the company Lurssen and Bannenberg Designs Ltd successfully worked on this venture. Interior designer Tim Heywood / Francois Catroux was commissioned for the overall interior ambience. Germany is the country that Lurssen Yachts completed their new build motor yacht in. After the formal launch in 1997 in Bremen she was afterwards delivered on to the proud new owner following sea trials and testing. The core hull was crafted from steel. The motor yacht superstructure component is fabricated mostly using aluminium. With a width of 12.41 metres or 40.7 ft LIMITLESS has beamy internal space. A reasonably deep draught of 4.39m (14.4ft) selects the number of certain harbours she can enter, depending on their individual characteristics. She had refit improvement and alteration work completed in 2004.

Engineering And The Crusie Speed That M/Y LIMITLESS is Able To Achieve:

The 3616 DITA engine installed in the motor yacht is produced by CATERPILLAR. LIMITLESS is propelled by twin screw propellers. The main engine of the ship creates 7265 horse power (or LIMITLESS kilowatts). She is fitted with 2 engines. The total power for the boat is therefore 19890 HP or 14636 KW. With respect to stabalisers she uses Flume Tank.

Providing volume for a maximum of 10 visiting passengers staying on board, the LIMITLESS accommodates them comfortably. The boat carries approximately 20 professional crew members to maintain and sail.

Limitless is a custom motor yacht launched in 1997 by Lurssen Yachts in Bremen, Germany and most recently refitted in 2004.

Lürssen has remained a family-run German shipyard since its inception in 1875 and is now in its fourth generation of private ownership. The company was founded by Friedrich Lürssen with a desire to create a leading shipyard in both quality and performance.

Turkish shipyard Limitless presented its latest creation, the Limitless 45, at the 2023 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show , with the bold promise of ushering in new era in luxury yachting.

The vessel showcases innovative design and functionality, starting with a high-low bathing platform that transforms into a beach club behind the engines, offering easy water access. Hydraulic fold-out wings increase the beam by 4ft creating an open beach club atmosphere.

The Limitless 45 offers flexibility in power, with options for either triple 400hp or twin 600hp V12 outboard engines . If you opt for the latter, this boat can cruise in the mid-40s and reach a top speed of just over 50 mph.

Stepping on board, the deck features cool composite decking material, with versatile seating that can be configured into a spacious sunpad.

The cockpit boasts a symmetrical layout that transforms at the touch of a button. L-shaped sofas and a fold-out table provide comfortable seating, accommodating up to 12 people.

A fully equipped wet bar steals the spotlight, featuring a glass surface, built-in sink, all-electric marine grill , and substantial pull-out refrigeration units on both sides.
