Loch Lomond Yacht Club Celebrates 60 Years and the Return of Racing
Loch Lomond Yacht Club (LLYC) in San Rafael is celebrating its 60th anniversary with a weekend of fun, culminating in the “The Swinging 60s Anniversary Bash” on Saturday, August 14, three days after its official birthday. Founded in 1961 by a handful of boat owners, the club held their very first meeting on August 11 in Fred Manley’s Boat Shop at the Loch Lomond Marina. By the end of its first year it had grown to 50 members, and by 1964 had almost 200 members and a newly built clubhouse. Now, 60 years later, the LLYC, which was once described as “Cheers with boats” , has a membership of approximately 120 and a fleet of about 50 yachts, both sail and power.
A ‘Cruise-in Happy Hour and Dinner’ will kick off the weekend-long birthday festivities ahead of Saturday’s dockside games and “maybe a dinghy race around the harbor during the afternoon.” Then at 5 p.m. the “big birthday blowout” gets into full swing with guests encouraged to dress in ’60s-themed attire (a good opportunity to dig out all those cool outfits stashed in the back of the closet). There will be a live band, and a “Retro ’60s” small-plate food buffet, and to quote Fleet Captain Matthew Byers, “I guarantee, this will be a party you do not want to miss!” Unfortunately due to the lingering pandemic issues the party is not open to the public. However club members and their guests and reciprocal yacht clubs will be out in full force!
As for racing? Byers said LLYC hasn’t held races in about 25 years.
“This is a very new program for us. We have a small but growing fleet of local sailors from not only Loch Lomond YC, but from San Rafael and Marin YC as well.” It’s no wonder the members are celebrating!
This year’s racing consists of a beer can series on Thursday evenings starting at 6:30 p.m. And while they use various courses throughout the season, a typical course is “from the start at 17, south to G15 just north of the west tower of the west channel of the Richmond Bridge, then north to a port round of East Brother Island, then back to the finish at G17.”
“Members of any yacht club on the planet can race with us!” Byers added. “If a skipper does not belong to a yacht club, but berths their boat at Loch Lomond Marina, they are welcome to race with us as well. Yacht club members who cannot make it out for the race itself are more than welcome to join us at the club after for drinks and the bbq.”
Thursday night beer can races will continue through to September 30, and conclude with “The Oily Chicken Regatta” — the two top-scoring boats battling it out over a “long distance” race from G17, south to R2 just west of the Richmond Long Wharf, then north to The Pumphouse at the entrance to the Petaluma River Channel, passing in between Point San Pablo and The Brothers. The race will then continue south to the finish at G17, passing between The Sisters, and Point San Pedro. “A pretty creative race course if you ask me!” Byers said.
But the fun on the water won’t end there. Racing will resume in November with a midwinter series on Saturday afternoons. The all-volunteer club also hosts weekly Friday night dinners, and (pre-COVID) an event at least once every Saturday. “We also have several weekend cruise outs to spots around the Bay and Delta,” Byers told us.
If you’re interested in becoming a part of Loch Lomond Yacht club, you can apply here . And judging from their calendar of events , the crew at LLYC definitely keep you sailing and socializing!

This is one of those, "Thank god these people are here" reviews. My kids and I were planning an 11 day sailing excursion up the delta, leaving from San Mateo. For months I planned this trip for the 4th of July. The day we left port (June 30th 2021) seas and wind were calm, kids were enjoying themselves. Then the wind started blowing around 12pm, and 24 hours later is still blowing. It's going to blow for the next few days. My daughter got sick around Alcatraz, the boy when we were around Angel Island. I could have pressed on another 4 hours or go left to this marina I could see in the distance. With 2 battered kids I surrendered and turned west to Loch Lomand. We were met with a great staff and a high end grocery store. Christine was super understanding and awesome about letting us keep our boat there for a few days. Kids and I spent one night there and the next morning turned our vacation around by taking an uber to the best western corte madera. A few days later when the wind calmed down my son and I returned to take the boat back home to San Mateo. Just wanted to say thanks for giving us safe harbor. You guys are great.
After 5 years and millions of dollars spent on improvements it's time to revisit Loch Lomond Marina, both on yelp and in person. In the years since my earlier review, the marina and its surrounds have undergone a thoroughly uplifting transformation. Owing to the new marina-adjacent homes being built here, Scotty's Market has moved to a brand new location and the path leading out to the jetty has been beautifully landscaped with benches to sit on and grass to play on. A new little playground has been erected along with picnic tables and restrooms and more restrooms can be found near a new fish-cleaning stand at the entry to the path leading to the jetty. And then there's the rock jetty itself. I used to like walking my dog out along the rocks with water on either side of us and can still do that but now with more ease. Instead of walking on rock, the entire jetty now sports a paved pathway all the way to its end. Several benches have been added there and along the way and as I write this I'm likely making it sound a lot bigger than it is. It's not big or long, but depending on how far away you park, (free parking, btw) walking to the end of the jetty is probably an adequate walk for both you and your dog. The entire area is clean and, with the improvements and the new residents, people really now seem to be enjoying this area. There's a bit of liveliness to the whole place. I still don't know anything about docking your boat here or launching it from here but if you're looking to escape for a little time beside the water now is the time to visit Loch Lomond Marina.
As I see it, there's two things to do here: take your boat out or walk your dog. I don't have a boat, so we're down to one. To maximize your dog walk, park at the first available space (there are many and they're free) then get out and walk to the far east end of the lot. A nice sidewalk takes you along the water and, at the end of the sidewalk and parking lot, a dirt and rock pathway takes you further. Follow the dirt and rock pathway as it becomes a jetty. The path isn't big or terribly long, but it's a nice little walk, you'll have water on either side of you, and you'll pass many other friendly dogs in both directions. There once was a good breakfast joint out here, but no more, so there's not really much reason to come however, sometimes you just want to walk along the water for a little while and this should satisfy that urge.
Pat and Christine the office managers are very friendly and helpful. We love the loch lomond harbor, the surrounding infrastructure is brand new, you have Andys Organic Market there (coffee specialities, organic groceries, pretty much comparable to Nugget store), access to live bait, spacious launch ramp, gated & protected boat slips with storage bins and water/electricity hookup. Also they offer to launch boats for daily $20 or a yearly pass $500. We rent a boat slip at Loch Lomond and can only highly recommended it! All in all a great experience.
My boat had an emergency on the water, luckily another boat nearby was able to tow us to the nearest marina being Loch Lomond. The harbor master refused to let me pull my boat out of the water through the ramp b/c it was closed due to covid-19. All it would take was moving a few cones and bins out of the way I'd be out in less than 5mins. Harbor master didn't care, his reply was "Get someone to repair it or get it towed out of here." Even the Coast Guard said the guy's being ridiculous b/c I was in a emergency circumstance. Harbor master didn't offer any other suggestions. I went to the harbor next door and thankfully they agreed to pull my boat out using their crane, I just had to haul it over with my trolling motor which took hours to do. Absolutely zero thanks to Loch Lomond harbor. In trying times they'll have absolute zero sympathy for you even in obvious troubles. I'd give negative 5 stars if I could.
Great marina, nice relaxing place and wonderful view of Mountain Tamalpais, Point Richmond and San Pablo Bay.
Gorgeous views, nice east walking, convenient location and safe. There is a grassy area near the grocery store that is by the walking path. There is a gorgeous marina with wonderful views. This is a kid-friendly and dog-friendly area. For the restrooms you need an access code.

Ive had a boat there about a year n ahalf now....nothing but problems from the start.... losing my credit report within 3 days of faxing it to them....to having my bank card double charged n taking 5-7 days to get reimbursed....informed them i was going to LA for medical reasons but back in a year n keep getting harassing calls from Kristy in the office over nonsense.....rent increasing in February....too rich for me n with all the empty slips there n no facility's....its amazing they stay afloat.....
We kept our little sailboat here for a while - so this review is geared towards people who are looking for a slip. I really liked this Marina! I found the gals at the main office very friendly & helpful. The Harbormaster & Asst. Harbormaster were fine, too! No issues at all. The dock itself was quite nice, too. We were on a side tie - and that still included water plus a dock box for a great rate. The electricity is metered - but with a tiny sailboat - we hardly used any and never saw an additional charge. There are a lot of live-aboards here - and everyone we met was super nice. It felt like a pretty solid community. Folks seemed to look out for eachother & I never felt like there was ever any security problems. Now that we've moved, I really miss the people we met! It IS shallow, there. This wasn't a problem for us, as we only draw 4 feet-so we could get out in any tide. That said - I was always glad I had a depth sounder when we went out in a low tide. It's nice & protected, too. You don't get the heavy summer wind & fog like you do in Sausalito. The trade off? You're quite a ways away from the main bay... which got old fast, for sailing. The other thing we REALLY didn't like was drive out there. It's kind of a schlep to get to... and I can't stand driving through downtown San Rafael during traffic. Between the High School traffic & general congestion - it's such a pain! It's also kind of far from any Marine Shop. Yes - the Western Boat & Bait shop is pretty close - but there selection for sailboat hardware/stuff is pretty slim. So if we were working on the boat & needed something...the closest place is either in Richmond or Sausalito. In short - great rates, friendly people, felt safe, nice & protected.... BUT far from the "preferred" sailing, far from a well stocked marine store, auto traffic can be a huge drag.
I have family friends who own a yacht. I know....WTF? Most people I know who say they own a boat either have a dilapidated fishing boat or a ski boat they use on Lake Oroville in between beer bong breaks on a rented houseboat. They don't have three bedroom yachts with multiple televisions, a fully loaded kitchen, two living rooms, two restrooms, and a high tech GPS system. But our family friends who have lived down the street from my parents since I was in kindergarten certainly own one. And I was invited to go out on that bad boy on Memorial Day 2007. I'm not gonna lie....going yachting didn't sound that enticing, but looking for Delta and Dawn, the two lost whales with the most unfortunately lame names you've ever heard, sounded like perfect way to spend a lazy holiday. But about five minutes after I boarded the yacht my pipe dreams of spotting the lost whales faded as I was handed an icy cold Corona and half a turkey sandwich. As we docked the boat to a buoy at Angel Island after a short cruise under the Richmond Bridge, I noticed all the people on sail boats staring at the giant and luxurious beast I was standing upon. I started snickering, not to mention spraying potato salad out of the sides of my mouth every time I laughed, because those poor suckers on the small ass boats weighted down with humans, dogs and booze didn't know that my apartment was approximately the size of the ship's master bathroom. Oh man! I love pretending I'm rich! "Jeffrey, daaaahling, please bring me my mai tai and Virginia Slips. Ooooooh I really should quit smoking, as it's affecting my tennis game. Oooooh shrimp Louise! Simply divine!" Fact: Sammy S. is not rich Fact: This will most likely be the only invitation on a yacht I will ever receive Fact: Right when the Coast Guard was about to announce the whereabouts of Delta and Dawn my mother screamed "where, where, where!" Fact: Rich people are fat because all they do while riding on their yachts is eat. Fact: Whales are dumb
Came here to get on a boat to go to McCovey Cove for a Giant's game. The marina was nice, not super big. They had a shop for bait available and restrooms. The parking was a little confusing, I'd recommend asking before committing to a parking spot there.

The Loch Lomond Marina. . .
Village at Loch Lomond Marina Mixed-Use Development. . .
- Retention of the existing full-service marina including public launch, fueling facilities, harbormaster’s office, and boat repair. Of the 517 boat berths, 52 were approved for “liveaboards’ allowing permanent residency. As part of the marina improvements, the existing breakwater, which separates the marina basin from the bay, was required to be reinforced and raised.
- Development of a new Andy’s Market, a full-service grocery store, on the west side of the marina site. North of the market, a new mixed-use building is approved to include neighborhood commercial uses and services.
- Development of 81 residential units in four housing types: detached, single-family residences, detached residential cottages, townhomes, and residential condominiums (developed in a separate mixed-use building). Of the 81 units, 17 were required to be sold to owners that qualify in the “below-market-rate” household income levels of low- and moderate-income (BMR Units). In 2020, project approvals were amended to allow a "buy-out" of six of the 17 required BMR units.
- Development of an expansive marina green, boardwalk and both active park (playground) and passive park (walking trails/paths, picnic areas) areas. The City approvals require that these recreation amenities be retained in private ownership but be open and accessible to the public.
- Enhancement, expansion, and preservation of an existing seasonal wetland, which is located at the eastern edge of the marina site.
- City approvals require that all the above improvements be constructed/installed by the property owner/developer.
- As the publicly accessible recreation amenities are to be retained in private ownership the City approvals require the establishment of a “Community Facilities District” (“CFD”, Mello-Roos District) to ensure long-term maintenance of these facilities. The CFD requires that the property owners within the geographic boundaries of this district (marina property boundaries comprised of the marina owners, commercial property owners and residential owners) be responsible for the cost of maintenance. Once the district is established, the annual cost for maintenance is included on the property owner’s annual property tax bill.
The City approval documents addressing environmental impacts, property zoning and land use project design and subdivision area available as follows:
- City Council Resolution #12330 (Certification of Final EIR and Adoption of CEQA Findings and Approving Mitigation Monitoring and Reporting Program)
- Exhibit A (Errata and Supplement)
- Exhibit B (Mitigation Monitoring and Reporting Program)
- Ordinance #1860 (Amendments to Planned Development Zoning for Loch Lomond Marina Project)
- City Council Resolution #12332 (Approval of Environmental and Design Review Permit and Master Use Permit and Vesting Tentative Subdivision Map)
Current Status. . .
- All of the subdivision improvements and utilities have been installed.
- The new Andy’s Market has been constructed and is open for business.
- The publicly accessible marina green, boardwalk and park facilities are complete and open for public use. In addition, the upgrades to the marina breakwater have been completed, which includes a paved public path that is accessible to the public. Outstanding recreation improvements yet to be constructed are a kayak dock (adjacent to the boat launch) and kayak launch (near the entrance to the breakwater). The kayak facilities are expected to be permitted and installed by late 2021.
- The seasonal wetland restoration has been completed and fenced to prohibit access to the area and to ensure protection of wildlife.
- The first phase of the residential development (“The Strand”) is completed. Forty-four (44) homes have been built and are occupied .
- Tru Mark Homes has purchased the second phase of The Strand, which consists of 32 homes. Building permit applications are in process and the homes are expected to start construction in Summer 2021.
- Tru Marin Homes is working with MVA to purchase and built the mixed-use building. It is expected that construction will commence in late 2021 .
- A building permit has been issued for the development of a new harbormaster’s office. Construction is expected to be completed in 2021 .
- City building permit applications have been filed for the approved boat repair/marina utility building and the refacing of the Loch Lomond Yacht Club. It is anticipated that the construction of these buildings will commence in spring 2021 .
- At present, the marina boat fueling facilities are not in operation. City permits for the fueling facility are ready to be issued pending the approval of permits from other State and Federal regulatory agencies. New fueling facilities are expected to be on-line in the near future .
- The “CFD” Mello-Roos District established in 2010. The tax amount for the property owners within the marina district is confirmed and adjusted annually by the City Council. For new resident property owners in the “The Strand,” the assessment is capped at approximately $2,000 per residential unit, per year. The “below-market-rate” units are exempt from this assessment. The assessment will appear on the property owner’s tax bill commencing in November 2017. A link to the July 17, 2017 City Council staff report on the “CFD” is provided below under “Links for more information. . .”
- In 2020, the San Rafael City Council approved a new Subdivision Improvement Agreement for the development. The agreement sets forth terms and approved plans for improvements to the playground area on the eastern jetty and the entrance to the break water. These areas flood during peak storm events and King tides. These improvements which will remedy this periodic flooding are scheduled to commence in 2021 and be complete by early 2022 .
Project Plans. . .
Project plans, as well as City files containing reports and technical studies are available for review at the City of San Rafael Department of Community Development, Planning Division.
