Guide to Hydra

Wildly beautiful, meticulously unspoilt and unrivalled in Greek island perfection

As you cruise aboard your luxury charter yacht through the crystalline Mediterranean waters, the port of Hydra opens into a gateway of idyllic ancient Greek island beauty that in every way lives up to its picture postcard reputation.

Situated within the Saronic Islands group, Hydra is one of the triangle of islands that form the new Greek Riviera, the others being Nafplion , Elafonisos, Monemvasia, Spetses, Ermioni and Porto Heli. Together this group offer some of the most breath-taking cruising grounds in the world in addition to fantastic beaches, significant historical monuments and a combination of traditional and cosmopolitan offerings.

This picturesque Greek island is possibly most famous for its public transport – the donkeys. Vehicles of any kind are banned which has ensured the clarity of the air and the wild, untouched atmosphere is unsurpassed when compared to the more popular yachting destinations in the West Mediterranean . Countless coves and hidden bays pepper the craggy coast, whether you choose to explore ashore or just admire the views from the sundeck of your luxury superyacht, Hydra is a must-see stop during a Greece itinerary.

With its name deriving from the Greek word for ‘water’ with which it was named for its many springs, much of Hydra’s timeless appeal is down to building regulations. Majestic grey stone mansions and blindingly white alleys wind through the harbour town which has meant it still maintains its ‘aesthetic perfection’. Life is slow and simple here yet also casually decadent. Every summer, international artists and sharp-eyed collectors come together for cutting edge art shows in the ramshackle high school and slaughterhouse.

Hydra is not specifically known for its beaches compared to those in the Aegean or Ionian islands nor does it boast the buzzing nightlife of Santorini or Mykonos , but the appeal it does hold is truly unique. The tavernas, boutiques and cultural activities on the island that have changed very little over the past few decades create the sense of the ‘real’ Greece and it is easy to see why it continues to attract charterers year after year as superyachts jostle for position in its tiny port.

Hydra island in the Saronic & Argolic sailing area:

Hydra is a Greek island located between the Saronic and the Argolic gulf in the West end of the Aegean Sea. It is considered one of the most popular destinations for sailing holidays in Greece as well as the “must stop” for charters in the area of the  Saronic and Argolic Gulf & Peloponnese East coast . Hydra features mountainous and infertile landscape with bare and rocky hillsides. The cosmopolitan island of Hydra offers much beauty and abundance of facilities and services to the visitor, but not to the yachts.  Hydra town is the capital and the main port of the island.  It is built amphitheatrically around the port encircled by traditional white houses and narrow alleys best for romantic walks.  Being a safe shelter on the North coast of the island, the colourful tiny port of Hydra  is almost always full of small and bigger yachts during summertime offering beautiful sightseeing spots for tourists. Cars and motorbikes are not allowed in the island and people use taxi boats and donkeys which give a different everyday lifestyle to the island. There are also the villages of Kaminia and Vlichos that both offer privacy, country life, seafood, nice beaches etc. Hydra offers nightlife for all tastes  mainly gathered around the main town and port. The capital offers cafes, small bars, good restaurants & tavernas as well as “after” night clubs where tourists can dance and roister till dawn. Hydra is also a good place for shopping since provides a wide range of commercial shops mostly in the main port.

Hydra island consists of pebbly, sandy beaches and coves.  Famous for the rocky coastlines and crystal – clear blue waters, some of them are well-organized with cafes, tavernas, facilities for bathers, watersports etc. The island’s well-known beaches are Spilia, Hydronetta, Kamini & small Kamini, Vliho, Palamidas, Molos, Kaoumithi, Bisti, Saint George, Saint Nikolaos, Klimaki, Limnioniza and Mandraki.

Weather conditions / Climate in Hydra island:

There are very few weather problems in the area and  the prevailing wind in Hydra island blows from SE at force 2-5 Beaufort scale , although it may be stronger on occasion. The  climate in Hydra island  is the classic Mediterranean: dry, sunny and hot summers and mild winters with little rainfalls. During summer, the temperatures are sometimes quite high but the constant breeze blowing in the area makes the atmosphere more enjoyable.

Moorings & Anchorages in Hydra island/ Saronic and Argolic Gulf:

Hydra harbour  is very crowded during summer and it is not unusual for yachts to be berthed second and third row from the quay. Anchoring is an issue into the harbour and yachts can moor to the town quay or to the N mole (when available). NOTE: In case of N-NW strong winds, the only safe shelter for yachts is on the N mole. Anchorages in Hydra island:  Vlihos, Ormos Molos, Petassi, Bisti, Saint Nikolaos. Keep in mind:  Alimos marina  and  Lavrion port  both located in Athens are our charter bases for the area of the Saronic & Argolic gulf and Peloponnese East coast.

History & Places of interest in Hydra island:

Hydra  was named after its bountiful water springs in ancient times.  “Dryopes” (a pre-Dorian Greek race) were the first inhabitants of the island before 1300 BC who all came from the mainland of Greece.  In Hydra and the side-island of Dokos the archaeologists found traces of ancient homes testifying that the island has been settled by the Early Bronze Age (3rd millenium BC).  Further into, underwater excavations have revealed an ancient shipwreck dated back to 1800 BC. In modern times around 1780 Hydra was a nautical station and a centre of maritime trade and communication. The island with its 130 ships played an important role in the Greek War against the Turks in 1821.

The island of Hydra abounds in interesting monuments and religious sights! Worth paying a visit: the Museum of History and Archives, the Koundouriotis mansion, the Byzantine museum, the school of art, the merchant marine academy, the Bastions with Cannons, many churches and monasteries.

Activities in Hydra island:

Visitors can enjoy various watersports and activities in Hydra island.  There is a diving centre in Bisti bay where quests can practise scuba diving, snorkelling, kayaking, bananas rides and the like. The island is also perfect for those who love hiking and trekking since there are paths and routes which satisfy even the most demanding traveller. There are several choices so as to rent a bike or a DONKEY mostly around the capital where vehicles are banned. Sea taxis (small boats) are available for short/ daily excursions as well.

Yacht Charter Hydra

aegean yachting Hydra

Hydra is truly the gem of the Saronic Gulf and stands alone among Greek islands as the one free of wheeled vehicles. No cars or scooters, just tiny marble-cobbled lanes, donkeys, rocks and sea. Artists like Nikos Chatzikyriakos Ghikas, musicians Leonard Cohen, actors and celebrities (Melina Mercouri, Sophia Loren) and travellers have all been drawn to Hydra over the years. So in addition to the island’s exquisitely preserved stone architecture, criss-crossing rural paths and clear, deep waters, you can find a good cappuccino along the people watching harbour.

The mules and donkeys are the main means of heavy transport and they, along with the rustic aspects of life on the island, give Hydra its two faces: chic and earthy.  Hydra was sparsely populated in ancient times and is just mentioned in passing by Herodotus.

Hydra is among those islands in Greece which can be easily attractive to tourists as well as to Greek people especially Athenians due to the short distance from Athens.  The characteristics of Hydra  that embodies the island you can admire today are the unique architecture and it’s picturesqueness.

The population according to the last census  is considered to be about 2000 inhabitants and the total area 73 square kilometres. The specific geographical coordinates are 37°20’11.0″N 23°28’16.9″E in Aegean Sea.

Hydra Yacht Charters – Things to Do & See

Hydra yacht charters

Lazaros Koundouriotis Historical Mansion : Reigning high over the Saronic Gulf, the Lazaros Koundouriotis Historical Mansion – once the home of Lazaros Koundouriotis, a shipowner who played a significant role in the Greek War of Independence – is the island’s main cultural attraction. An idyllic example of late 18th-century architecture, today, this stately “arhontiko,” Greek for “stone mansion,” is fitted with the original furnishings, folk costumes, local handicrafts, and a painting exhibition of the time period in which it was built.

Monastery of Agia Efpraxia : Founded in 1825, this picturesque monastery is one of the most interesting places in Hydra; today serving as the home of nine nuns, who also work as embroidery artists and four monks. Hidden amongst verdant forests at the top of a hill, the Monastery of Agia Efpraxia is known for its magical views and historic complexity. Further securing its clouded past is the fact that this monastery was once a jail for imprisoned Greek heroes.

Spilia : Though it’s not actually a beach, Spilia, a large cove of paved swimming rocks, is often considered the closest public beach area to Hydra Town, the island’s central village. The Greek word for “cave,” Spilia is recognized for its translucent waters and immaculate sunset views. Its three eateries – the Spilia Cafe, Sunset Restaurant, and Ydronetta Bar – are the perfect place for an island cocktail after a day of bathing in the refreshing Saronic Gulf.

Limioniza : Accessible only by boat, donkey or a two-mile hike by foot, Limioniza is often considered the most beautiful beach on the island of Hydra. Characterized by shimmering pebbles and the crystal clear, turquoise waters of the Saronic Gulf, this secluded beach gives travelers a unique opportunity to explore Hydra’s distinguishable landscape, while relaxing under Greece’s warm, revitalizing sun.

Hydra is a charter location in Saronic Gulf, Argolic Gulf and Eastern Peloponnese , a yacht charter area in Greece.

The anchorages on Hydra :

Hydra is an elongated island stretching from east to west, whose residents don’t seem to like motor vehicles at all. Once you set foot on the island, donkeys prove to be the most efficient transportation option all over the island. Of course, nothing prevents you from starting your engine and exploring the coastline from the sea. The island doesn’t have much greenery, which stone houses of Hydra Town, the main settlement of the Sardonic island, strongly imply. Another curiosity about Hydra is the claim that it has as many churches as a year has days – 365. Of course, don’t forget that the island boasts extraordinary beaches and coves, with Agios Nikolaos and Bisti being among the finest.

Hydra Yacht Charter

Wild, beautiful and unspoilt, Hydra is situated within the Saronic Islands with an idyllic main town and the perfect landscape for exploration by luxury yacht charter. Discover hidden coves and bays, enjoy summer art shows or take a donkey ride around the island. Hydra is one of a triangle of islands that have become known as the new Greek Riviera. The others are Elafonisos, Monemvasia, Nafplion, Ermioni, Spetses and Porto Heli. The entire group of islands offers breath-taking scenery, wonderful cruising grounds and amazing beaches. There’s a great combination of cosmopolitan and traditional offerings here too including many historical monuments.

Discover why Hydra has such a stellar reputation among the luxury yachting community and spend your days among its heavenly green fields and pale, primary-coloured beaches.

Cobblestone streets lead off from the central port of Hydra and offer an abundance of opportunities to discover the town by yourself, or plan your itinerary to pack in as much as possible. Museums, cathedrals and ruins are all accessible by foot, but to go farther away from the town centre hire a bike or a donkey as cars are banned on the island. In the evenings, the town comes alive with a thriving bar and restaurant scene, and there is enough choice for you to eat out somewhere different each night if you desire.

The public transport on Hydra is by donkey: There are no vehicles allowed which means the air is clean and the wild landscape untouched. It’s a very popular yachting destination in the Eastern Mediterranean with a craggy coastline that is best seen from a deck on board your charter yacht. Hydra means “water” and was named because of the many springs found here. With its white alley ways, Greystone mansions and delightful harbour town, it’s perfection with a capital “P”. The locals move at a slow pace enjoying everything around them. In the summer months collectors and international artists descend on Hydra to attend art shows either in the slaughterhouse or the ramshackle high school – an experience to join in on with the opportunity to gain a memorable souvenir of your trip.

The unique appeal of this splendid island is that the boutiques, cultural activities and tavernas haven’t changed much over the last few decades. This brings a touch of the “real Greece” to Hydra. It’s not difficult to see why some many people visit the island year after year mooring their vessels in the tiny picturesque port.

Below is a selection of luxury yachts available in this area. You can view additional Greece charter yachts here or contact us for additional information.

Hydra sailing holidays

The Hydra gulf lies between the saronic gulf and the argolic gulf and is a one of the most popular yacht charter areas in Greece.

The island of Hydra - Ύδρα (ancient Hydraea) itself is a bare monolithic ridge of limestone, 12 km long by 5 km wide, lying off the south-east coast of the Argolid.

Arid and infertile, it lives mainly from the tourist trade and the sale of craft products (jewellery, pottery, embroidery, hand-woven cloth, leather-work). A tempting local speciality is the almond cake called amygdalote.

North-west of Hydra is the little grazing island of Dokos (the ancient Aperopia), with the village of the same name in a sheltered bay on the north coast. The mainland (in fact the Peloponnese peninsula) features many interesting anchorages and the handsome village of Ermioni.

Hydra was already settled in Mycenaean times, but was a place of no importance until the 18th c. In the 15th c. and again in 1770, after the revolt in the Morea, Albanian refugees made their home on the island, and as a result of their efforts – in trade and shipping, but also in piracy – it became prosperous and wealthy. During the War of Greek Independence the Hydriots converted their trading vessels into warships and met a large proportion of the cost of the war. The island has now reverted to its original unimportance.

Hydra Gulf and island nautical chart

The little town of Hydra (pop. 2500), climbs picturesquely up the slopes of the hills round its sheltered harbour on the north coast of the island. It is now a favourite resort, particularly painters, and intellectuals, who give the town its particular aspect and atmosphere.

On the quay is the 17th c. Conventual Church of the Panayia (Cathedral of the Assumption) with a beautiful cloister and art collection. On the other side of the harbour are the imposing mansions of early 19th c. ship owners and merchants, including the houses of Admiral Lakovos Tombazis (now occupied by an outstation of the Athens Academy of Art) and Dimitrios Voulgaris. One such mansion houses a training school for the merchant navy.

The plain white and sometimes colour-washed houses of the town on the slopes above the harbour are rather Cycladic in type. Above the town to the west are the ruins of a medieval castle, and lower down are fortifications built during the War of Independence.

The Hydra harbour can get quite crowded in the summer months, ten ferries a day plus the odd cruise ship anchored off make it a very tight squeeze altogether. Moreover, anchors are often fouled by other anchor chains and holding is in some places very poor. See my guide to Mediterranean mooring and anchoring . The best tavernas can be found further up in town. There is a lovely restaurant — following the seashore west from the port, walking distance — in the next fishing mini harbour of Kameni.

On the doorstep of Hydra port is the shallow harbour of Kameni  /  Kaminia - Καμίνια (for small fishing boats) where in southerlies you can drop anchor in 6 – 8 m waters outside the west pier and take a line to it. Superb taverna ashore: Kodylenias Resto / Hydra Kodylenia   Lat Long

Rocks

On the north-west of Hydra island – often overlooked, and “hidden” behind Petasi islet - Πετάσι is the minute cove of Bali - Μπαλή with allround shelter in sandy bottom and good holding.

Even in WSW winds it is a suprisingly secluded spot although NE and SW winds can bring in a swell; use Navionics and Eagleray ; room for 2 à 3 yachts; completely beachgoer-free  ; anchor in 3 – 6 m and place the second anchor onto the rocks Lat Long

The bay of Agios Georgios - Άγιος Γεώργιος is very popular – expect a number of “tupperware” and motor yachts – since this is the beach and anchorage with the most foliage and where the forest touches the shores.   Sunbathers can arrive by tripperboat only, but tend to focus to the beach and buoyed off swimming area to the north of the headland with the white Ag Georgios Church.

Solid holding in sand; merely affected by SW winds and sufficiently sheltered by Petasi islet; plenty of options to take a line ashore south of the Church Lat Long

This “delusion of the senses” makes people interpret random images, or patterns of light and shadow, as faces.

Find out what the connection is between Pareidolia and an Epiphany, read on…

The pleasant cove of Kavouri or Bisti - Μπίστι on the west tip of Hydra island is exposed to N – E winds; good holding; swell can make it uncomfortable; mildly touristy in season; a forest of pine trees; snorkeling in turquoise waters near the reef Lat Long

The perfect bay of Nikolaos - Άγιος Νικόλαος on the south-west tip is the stepping stone towards Leonidio , Kyparissi , Ieraka (Yerakas) or even Monemvasia . The ashes of my father were dispersed at the Ayios Nikolaos islet – a decade later I brought my mother's ashes here and they were reunited again. Glorious sunsets behind the stretch of little islands that guards this cherished anchorage. Drop anchor in 4 – 8 m and drag the stern anchor onto the nearest rocks; open to the SW Lat Long

The bay of Limioniza - Λιμνιώνιζα on the south of Hydra island is a lovely beach and marvellously deserted. In strong NE winds mind the violent gusts down the mountains when sailing along the south coast. Lat Long

The bay of Mandraki - Μανδράκι was in earlier times the naval port of Hydra, and two castles on either cape would shield the entrance with canons; one castle is still conspicuous; sandy beach (instead of pebbles); pretentious and distasteful beach resort and ditto tourists; moderate holding; susceptible to swell Lat Long

Sailing holidays Ermioni port chart

The friendly village of Ermioni (Hermioni) is located at the stem of a wooded headland. Despite its proximity to Athens the place is relatively tranquil and unspoiled from tourists.

Plans to create the “Ermioni 'super-yacht' Marina” in the shallow North corner of the bay have been delayed for years. On land, near the football ground, the area is only fenced off and there is still no activity in August 2022.   The new deadline is end of 2024; accommodating around 127 yachts, up to 65 m in length, bars, restaurants and shops, a swimming pool and chandlery: clearly aiming for the higher plutocratic echelons. Nearby in Porto Heli are the second homes (palaces) of the former King of Greece, the current King of the Netherlands, Roman Abramovic, President Putin, etc.

In earlier times Ermioni was of some importance as shown by the ancient mole and walls near the end of the headland. You can either anchor near this ancient mole or go stern-to or bows-to behind the outer mole. Go to the south side of the headland for more peace and quiet and wonderful vistas across the Hydra Gulf.

Dokos island

The island of Dokos - Δοκός and surrounding waters are an archaeological park, and before 2017 it was prohibited to enter the bay of Skindos  /  Skintos - Σκίντος .

Most yachts will moor near the taverna and Ayios Nikolaos Church, whereas the small coves on either side of the entrance offer much more sereneness. The west cove is called “ Derrick's Bay ” (use a tripline to avoid the large chain on the seabed      ), and at the opposite cove an ancient wreck was found, my preferred spot.

sailing yacht charter hydra

In 1821, during the War of Greek Independence , Skintos was the winter anchorage of the Hydra fleet. Older history can be found on the brow of the hill (288 m): a Mycenaean wall and dozens of houses, Early Hellenistic walls, but also Byzantine churches and strongholds were built here. The world's oldest 2700 – 2200 BCE wreck is the “Dokos shipwreck”

There is a lovely anchorage behind Soupia – known as “ Lizard island ” since it resembles a crouching frog, iguana or lizard, when seen from the east. Lovely surroundings with tamarisk trees on the beach providing shade (also for a few peacocks, the bird associated with Hera ).

Ideally anchor in one of the two coves, but anywhere north of the island will do; some litter on the seabed (fridge etc.); solid holding in sand Lat Long

When sailing from Poros into the Hydra Gulf (or vice versa), mind the hydrofoils    emerging from the strait of Skylli at great speed, see day and night signs .

There is a delightful anchorage snug behind Gali islet, east of Spathi island; nothing ashore except a Church; allround shelter; good holding; no wash from commercial ships Lat Long

The south-west bay of Skylli island is open to the south; mind the reefs Lat Long Collectively these isles are named the Tselevinia islets.

the horsoe port of hydra

Hydra is treated as a national monument, because of her architecture. The mansions (ta arhontika) of the merchant families, designed by Venetian and Genoese architects that was living that period at the island.

mansons arhontika

There are no cars and it is free of traffic. Donkeys are the only way of transport around the island roads.

donkeys transport at idra

The name of ancient Idhra ( "Hydrea"), comes from the rich water sources that Hydra had at the ancient times. At the ancient greek word "Ydor" means "water".

Near Hydra, you can find an isolated island, Dokos, which has several anchorages . There is a family business tavern only in Dokos where you can rest and eat fresh fish.

isolated anchorages at hydra

While your staying at Idhra, you can find beaches with clear fantastic waters,  visit the Byzantine museum and the historical archive museum. Some of the old mansions (old arhontika) are also open for visits, if you have interest at architecture and interior design.

Hydra Harbor at the little town of Hydra.

Early Spring is the best time to visit the Harbor of Hydra , because after that period and for the whole summer the port is packed with sailing boats and day trip yachts.  In peak season, it is not unusual for boats to be moored three deep on the quay.

Mandraki is really close to The port of Hydra, but it is a little bit exposed at the N.  There is available water with  taxi service to the harbor.

We suggest you to anchor in front of the village. Also exposed to N and available water taxi service here.

Molos a few miles west away from the Port of Hydra, is a good alternative to anchorage because it is isolated.

There are no Marinas or Yachting Clubs available at Hydra.

Visit Hydra

sailing yacht charter hydra

Visit Hydra, built in the shape of an amphitheatre on a slope overlooking the Argosaronic gulf, is one of the most romantic destinations in Greece . Traditional stone mansions, narrow cobblestoned streets, secluded squares and above all the banning of cars and the use of around 500 donkeys as means of public transportation, explain the reason why Hydra preserved its distinctive atmosphere through the passage of time. The island experienced exceptional economic growth in the past thanks to its great naval and commercial activity. The Hydriots contributed significantly also to the 1821 War of Independence as their powerful fleet participated in crucial sea battles. It is rather impressive the fact that such a tiny island is the birthplace of five Greek Prime Ministers!

Lavish stone mansions owned by important families (Voulgaris, Kountouriotis, Tombazis, Kriezis, Bountouris etc), and built by Italian artisans reveal the wealth that experienced the island in the past. Today most of these mansions house the island’s museums . 300 churches and 6 monasteries spread around the island as well as the cannons and the statues of the Independence War heroes still standing at the balconies of the islands create a romantic mosaic.

As you walk along the waterfront , the heart of the town, you encounter monuments, churches, canons, museums, old mansions, statues of famous heroes, the old gunpowder store, shops and cafes, while picturesque winding streets lead you to neighborhoods located at the upper part of the town, as well as to the old neighborhood of Kiafas.

Hydra is also a yachting paradise , as every summer groups of sailing boats moor at the harbour, where they are joined by dozens of sensational motorboats and yachts. It’s worth mentioning that Hydra became famous all over the world thanks to the film “Boy on a Dolphin”, shot on the island in 1957 with Sophia Loren leading the starring role.

Visit the island’s museums to take in a little history:

• Historical archive-Museum of Hydra: It showcases rare archive material related to the history, tradition and culture of the island from 1708-1865. It includes an Archive Section, the Museum Section, and the Library. • Ecclesiastical and Byzantine Museum : Housed in the old Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, it houses vestments, holy vessels, elaborately decorated gospel and icons, mainly from the 18th century. • Annex to the National Historical Museum : The house of Lazaros Kountouriotis operates as an annex of the National Historical Museum. It was donated to the National and Ethnological Society of Greece in 1979 by Kountouriotis’ descendents. • Museum of Post-Byzantine Art and History of Hydra: Housed in the mansion of Georgios Kountouriotis, the museum exhibits personal artifacts of the Kountouriotis family, as well as exhibits from the modern history of the island.

Explore the island’s beaches:

• Mandráki: During the War of Independence it was used as a harbour but today it is an organised beach with excellent water sport facilities. • Bísti: A pebbly beach, where Hydra Diving Centre organises water sport activities such as diving and kayaking. • Vlychós: A beach covered with pebbles at Vlychos holiday resort. • Spiliá: Ideal for tan-seeking sunbathers. • Limnióniza: Many people consider it as the most beautiful beach on the island, probably because it takes two hours hiking in order to reach it, and enjoy a swim in its turquoise water! • Hydronéta: This beach, which lies directly beneath the cannons, has cement decks suitable for sunbathing. • Ayios Nikolaos: A sandy beach, on the west of the island. Access is only possible by water taxi.

Podolsk is the second largest city in Moscow Oblast , by quantity of residents (315,000) comparable to such regional centers, as Pskov or Novgorod . The city built out of high-rise buildings makes a quite melancholy impression, but this feeling is deceptive. To realize this, you simply need to get out of the car.

Understand [ edit ]

The settlement, based here in 1627 as an ancestral lands of the Moscow Danilov Monastery, lived a silent and measured life for almost 300 years. Everything has changed with the advent of the railroad in the city in 1889. In several decades the big cement works plant and a factory, producing sewing machines of German firm Singer Inc., were built. Singer’s factory, which was renamed during Soviet Union era the Kalinin Factory, still remains the largest enterprise of sewing mechanical engineering. The factory occupies practically the whole block at the beginning of the Big Serpukhov street and is a commendable sample of industrial architecture of the early XX century. Besides Singer, there are many other curious spots from the architectural point of view in Podolsk. Huge blocks of “constructivism” houses, houses built in pre-war and post-war Stalin style, merchant’s small houses. Walking around the city, it is possible to study lanterns of different decades of XX century and to be surprised seeing the signboards, remained constant since the 1960s.

At a corner of Revolutionary avenue and February street there is an interesting building of a department store constructed in 1913. On Lenin Square there is a book store (“House of the Book”) arranged the same way as the Obraztsov puppet theatre in Moscow. There’s a nice looking small white-stone church of the Resurrection of the Christ (1724) on Red street. It is pleasant to walk down Fedorov street, which is built out of small wooden houses. At the end of it, on abrupt slope of Pahra river, part of a cobblestone road which leads to the city park has been preserved. Along a city part of Warsaw highway (Bolshaya Serpukhovskaya and a part of Lenin avenue) merchant houses of the beginning of the XIX century can be seen. The largest part of a museum “Podolye” (ph. (27) 69 92 39, Lenin avenue, 47) is devoted to Lenin who spent several months living in Podolsk. Besides objects that were held once in hands of the leader of world proletariat, there are a few photos and documents, devoted to the life of the city in the beginning of the XX century. There is a Local History museum in Podolsk (PH. (27) 57 47 31, Parkovaya, 1), it is located on the outskirts of the city in manor Ivanovo, which belonged to manufacturer Bakhrushin. In an exposition there is a standard museum assortment, except for maybe a tusk of the mammoth. Instead, articles made out of bone in the early Iron Age are presented. The most significant part of the exposition is a collection of Singer sewing machines. In the same building the Museum of vocational training (TECHNICAL TRAINING COLLEGE) is located. The most interesting part is a hall where the products, made by pupils of the TTCs from all over the country, are exposed.

'I ended up in a shark den': Deck hand bitten in fall from boat needed 100-plus stitches

Marlin wakeman fell into a shiver of 20 sharks while working on a fishing charter in the bahamas. how he got out of the water stunned his surgeon..

sailing yacht charter hydra

WEST PALM BEACH — On Marlin Wakeman’s many trips to the Bahamas as a deckhand on charter fishing boats, he would notice dozens of sharks gathered by docks, where people throw buckets of fish at them.

He often would wonder: What would happen if anyone fell in?

On Friday, April 26, he found out the most painful way a person could.

Wakeman's foot slipped as he jumped from the dock to a boat at Flying Fish Marina in Clarence Town and he fell into a shiver of 20 hungry sharks. When he hit the water, a 7-foot Caribbean reef shark sunk its teeth into his left leg and pulled Wakeman's head underwater.

“I ended up in a shark den,” Wakeman, 24, of Stuart said Thursday, May 9, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach. “I wasn’t really scared at the moment. I just knew I had to get out as quickly as possible. Thankfully, I’m here to tell the story.”

Wakeman had just managed to pull himself onto the boat’s deck, when a second shark grazed his right shoulder with its teeth.

'The luckiest guy': Shark bite victim recounts his 'shredded' arm, stranger who saved him

Path of shark-bite survival went from tourniquet to wheelbarrow to clinic

The boat’s captain heard Wakeman’s cries for help from inside the boat. When he saw him, he tied a tourniquet on his leg, pushed him to a van in a wheelbarrow and sent him to the nearest clinic. There, the medical staff stopped the bleeding and stitched up the wounds.

“Nothing really hurt at first,” said Wakeman, who was working on a charter for Bucket List, a company based in Stuart. “It was a lot of pressure, but I didn't feel any sharpness. You don't really feel the teeth going into you.”

Wakeman said the pain was the worst on the van ride to the clinic, when the adrenaline wore off. He passed out from the pain.

“I wasn’t freaking out, but I told my captain, ‘Hey man, I don’t really want to die right now,’ ” Wakeman said with a chuckle.

The boat’s owner chartered a plane to fly him to West Palm Beach the next day. His dad, Rufus, met him at the airport and took him to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach.

When the elder Wakeman saw the text about his son’s shark attack , he said it felt like time stood still. His wife, Melynda, said she went into “shock mode” and “felt like a million little pieces.”

“It’s the worst text you can get,” said Rufus Wakeman, a charter captain himself. “I have several friends who have been bitten, and it’s a shocking revelation when you see some of the wounds these people have had to endure. Now it's our son.”

He is glad that the surgeon who cared for his son, Dr. Robert Borrego, specializes in treating shark attacks. He has treated three so far this year and typically has seven shark bite patients a year, he said.

“Due to a particular chain of events that were set in motion that day, (Marlin) is sitting here right now,” Rufus Wakeman said. “We’re very grateful for all the powers that be that got us to this point.”

'Blessed that it wasn't worse': Florida surfer recounts shark bite that cost him tip of toe

West Palm Beach surgeon 'shocked' that shark attack survivor escaped the water

Borrego said the shark just missed Marlin’s femoral artery, which carries blood from the lower abdomen to the lower limbs. If it had bitten him there, he would have lost more blood and possibly his life.

“It shocks me that he was able to get out of that water,” Borrego said. “The fact that there were 20 sharks in there and he was able to get out and still have a leg is amazing.”

Stopping the bleeding is the first course of action after a shark bite, because bleeding out is the greatest threat to life. After a patient is stabilized, infection becomes the top concern. A lab at St. Mary’s studies the effects that contact with a shark’s mouth can have on the human body. It has found a greater amount of bacteria the closer sharks are to shore.

As soon as Wakeman got to the hospital, Borrego prescribed him a “broad spectrum” of antibiotics. He then performed surgery to clean out the wounds and check for infection.

Borrego expects Wakeman to make a full recovery. He took out his stitches this past week and said the 24-year-old is “healing nicely.” He expects the scars to heal in two weeks, but recommends that Wakeman keep his leg out of the sun for a year.

'Happy to be OK': Shark-bite victim recounts incident near Juno Beach Pier, surgery on arm

Shark bite survivor reminds people not to get 'lazy' near apex predators

Wakeman said he will be more careful working near the water from now on. He said he “got a little lazy” after bringing fishing gear back and forth from the the dock to the boat, which makes regular fishing charter trips from Stuart to the Bahamas.

He jumped 3 feet, rather than cautiously stepping toward the boat. That's when he fell.

Wakeman had narrowly escaped a few close encounters with sharks on other fishing and diving trips. He considers the incident “lucky” because it was him who fell, rather than a child or an elderly person who wouldn't have had the strength to pull themselves onto the boat.

“Keep in mind that (sharks) are apex predators and you don’t want to end up in their mouth,” Wakeman said.

Florida leads the world in shark bites. Awareness is the best way to avoid them.

The best way to stay away from a shark attack in the ocean is to avoid swimming in murky water and being aware of the blacktip shark migration period, which roughly runs from January to April.

Florida leads the world in shark bites, according to a report by the University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File. The report logged 83 shark attacks in Palm Beach County since 1882 and found that 15% of bites in Florida are from blacktip sharks.

Palm Beach County has the third-most shark attacks since 1882 out of all other Florida counties. The greatest concentrations are in Volusia County, home to Daytona Beach, which some call the “shark bite capital of the world.”
