SAILING RANGE

Power range, introducing the, leopard 50 catamaran, the next generation of leopard catamarans.

Designed as a versatile replacement for the award-winning Leopard 48 (Boat of the Year 2012), the new Leopard 50 is an exciting new cruising sailing catamaran taking the best of Leopard Catamarans’ previous features yet boasting new innovations and design elements both on the exterior and interior.

With naval architecture by Simonis & Voogd Yacht Design, and with exterior and a fresh new look on the interior design by the world-class design team at Robertson and Caine, the Leopard 50 proudly ushers in the next generation of Leopard Catamarans’ style and functionality.

Leopard 50 Sailing

29+ Years of Production Expertise

While the exterior of the yacht has been enhanced, Naval Architect for Simonis Voogd Design, Alexander Simonis, tells us this:

“Most of the work has been done ‘under the bonnet’ so to say by advances made in the construction geometry of the new 50. To create the beautiful open plan layouts and the nearly 360-degree view from the saloon area while at the same time have a strong and stiff yacht which is not too heavy requires advanced engineering solutions.

The new Leopard 50 makes use of carbon-infused ring frames in the most critical areas to achieve this. This type of construction has been pioneered on the larger all carbon racing catamarans and is now successfully being applied in this Leopard cruising catamaran so that we can offer the best possible mix between comfort, space and performance.”

The perfect blend of comfort and style.

“Stepping onboard the L50 will reveal an interior that is contemporary in style, with a focus that blends aesthetic detail with functionality.

Cabins are more open and spacious than ever before thanks to widening bulkhead openings as much as possible. This is achieved by combining exotic materials with new modern construction techniques.

One can appreciate the sense of ease and comfort while moving throughout the boat. This is a product of our team’s passionate approach stemming from initial sketches, to detailed 3D models, and finally life-size replicas of each area where we physically and meticulously tweaked every single feature until we were 100% satisfied that we had the best product available.”

- Michael Robertson, Tampa Design Team

Leopard 50 Interior

The innovative flybridge on the Leopard 50 includes a lounge area, a sunbed and shade awning. Access to the flybridge is provided by floating stairs leading up from the aft cockpit. While under sail, passengers can move about the flybridge with ample headroom and never worry about interference from the boom.

Boat Review: Leopard 40 Power Cat

  • By Mark Pillsbury
  • October 23, 2023

Leopard 40 Power Cat sailing in The Bahamas

Sitting at the flybridge helm station aboard the new Leopard 40 power cat, taking in the view of Biscayne Bay and the Miami skyline, was an excellent way to spend a sunny February morning. It was the day after the 2023 Miami International Boat Show, where the latest model from South African builder Robertson and Caine had made its world debut. I was thoroughly enjoying my allotted time at the helm.

Did I mention that I was a thousand or so miles from the snow and ice back home in New England? Or that the three-person helm seat was far comfier than a similar-size chairlift on any ski hill? Or that the table, surrounded by an L-shaped couch directly behind me—never mind the adjacent chaise abutting a counter with grill, sink and fridge—promised nothing but fun times for both skipper and crew?

With another nine hulls already in the works, and more to come by year’s end when production is fully ramped up, the boat will soon be available for charter vacations with The Moorings. At first, it will be in the British Virgin Islands, the Bahamas , Croatia and Greece, and eventually, it will join the company’s bases worldwide.

Off the Florida coast, we monitored miles per gallon at 500 rpm increments. In slow motion (1,000 rpm), the twin 370 hp Yanmar diesels sipped fuel at an estimated rate of 4.8 miles to the gallon. The boat’s sweet spot—3,000 rpm, where we cranked along at 17 knots—came at a cost of 0.8 miles per gallon. Any more or less, and efficiency dropped, according to onboard gauges. Top speed was a little better than 22 knots.

Leopard 40 interior

At cruising speed, the boat’s hydraulic steering felt nimble and responsive as I cranked the wheel into a turn. Conditions were fairly calm, but crossing our own wake, the 40 PC plowed on through the chop without missing a beat.

At low speed, the 40 PC turned easily when I adjusted the twin fly-by-wire throttles and shifted between forward and reverse. The sailor in me wondered if the builder really needed to include a bow thruster in the port bow, though the feature had made getting out of the tight slip at the marina a simple enough maneuver. For extra-tight quarters with a shorthanded crew, cameras can monitor the stern and bow, and deliver the imagery to either of the twin Raymarine displays at the upstairs helm station.

The 40 PC joins a lineup that includes the Leopard 46 PC (also sold as the Moorings 464) and Robertson and Caine’s flagship on the power side, the Leopard 53 PC.

A word of explanation here: Robertson and Caine enjoys a somewhat unusual relationship with Travelopia, which owns The Moorings and Sunsail, and oversees the Leopard sales team. All of Robertson and Caine’s sailing catamarans go into the charter companies’ fleets or are sold to private owners as Leopard Catamarans. Robertson and Caine’s power models are branded as Leopards or Moorings models, depending on how an owner plans to use the boat. All of Robertson and Caine’s current models—power and sail—are developed by the in-house design team, along with Alex Simonis of naval architecture firm Simonis and Voogd, and Franck Bauguil, vice president of yacht ownership and product development at Travelopia. Bauguil also manages sales of all three brands.

At present, he says, approximately half of Robertson and Caine’s sailboats are sold for charter, and half are for private use. The same is expected to be true for the 40 PC. Robertson and Caine plans to build 20 of the boats this year and increase the number to 31 next year. A well-equipped model, delivered from South Africa to the United States ready to go, comes in at under $1.2 million.

The three current power models comprise the fourth generation of power vessels from Robertson and Caine in terms of design. Previous generations shared some furniture modules with boats from the sail side, but Bauguil says that this new line started with a blank sheet of paper. The result is increased volume for interior accommodations without disturbing performance.

The boat in Miami was powered by optional twin 370 hp Yanmar diesels. Charter models are fitted out with 350 hp Yanmars, and 250 hp Yanmars are also available. Tankage is cruiser-friendly, with 370 gallons of fuel and 170 gallons of water.

Leopard 40 stateroom

Aboard the 40 PC, the owner’s stateroom occupies the starboard hull. It has a queen berth aft and a head compartment forward with a shower in the forepeak. Amidships are a desk and television, hanging lockers, and a fair amount of stowage.

The port hull includes guest staterooms fore and aft, each with a queen berth, and a shared head between them.

It’s bright and airy in the salon, thanks to windows that offer a near 360-degree view, a sliding door that opens to the cockpit, and another door forward that leads to the foredeck, where a couple of cushioned sun beds await. The cockpit is shaded by the flybridge, with a cushioned seat across the transom, and a dining table.

The salon itself is well-laid-out, with an indoor helm station tucked into the forward starboard corner. To port, an L-shaped couch surrounds a coffee table (a dining table is optional); opposite is an upholstered chair. The galley is adjacent to the cockpit, with a full-size, home-style fridge to starboard and an L-shaped counter to port that includes an induction stove top, a convection microwave oven, a sink, and a dishwasher.

On deck, a solid stainless-steel rail around the boat provides secure handholds for moving about underway.

Inside and out, the lines of the 40 PC are sharp and stylish. Bauguil says early orders indicate that the boat is appealing not only to multihull sailors who want to make a jump into power, but also to powerboaters looking for the efficiency gained by two hulls. As for charterers, I can state it pure and simple: Put me on a 40 PC somewhere warm and sunny for a week, and I’ll guarantee a good time.

The Relationship Between Leopard and The Moorings Explained

YO-Moorings-Leopard-0818

It is a question that I am asked all of the time. How are The Moorings and Leopard Catamarans related?  And what are the similarities and difference between the two brands? In this post I will give you all of the details you need to understand the lasting relationship between the two brands.

The History of Leopard and The Moorings

In 1994 the world’s largest charter company, The Moorings, was looking for a company to build catamarans for their charter fleet. After a successful background of custom and racing yachts, Robertson & Caine of Cape Town, South Africa was chosen by The Moorings to build a rugged catamaran up to the challenge of not only chartering, but crossing every ocean during their worldwide deliveries. These yachts not only had to be robustly constructed, but had to be easy to handle, easy to maintain, and of course, fun to sail!  After five years of building exclusively for The Moorings charter fleets, there was soon a demand from customers asking how they could own these boats privately. With the growing popularity of The Moorings catamaran models, building for private ownership was a natural evolution.

The Introduction of Leopard Catamarans

In 2000, market demand brought on the launch of Leopard Catamarans. While purchasing a catamaran into a charter fleet is a great way to own, it is not for everyone.  There were plenty of people asking the question, "How can I buy one and keep it for myself." The two brands, The Moorings and Leopard Catamarans, are sister companies created for the client depending on what they want out of owning a yacht.

How do the boats differ?

The same perimeters of well-built, ease of maintenance and ease of handling was an essential request from private owners looking for the same features as the charter boats.  However, the needs of private ownership are different than the needs of charter ownership. Many private owners are full-time or part-time live aboard and thus need a multitude of choices. Leopard Catamarans offer features geared toward more comfort with large owner staterooms (three cabin versions with the entire starboard hull dedicated to an owner suite), additional storage space, options such as washer / dryer, watermakers, expanded electronics, and more. All built in the same plant, to the same design and high standards, but each one built to the owner’s choice of layout, options and colors.

Is a Leopard Catamaran considered a Moorings Catamaran?

In the short answer, no. However, you could say that a Moorings Catamaran is considered a Leopard Catamaran. As I mentioned previously, when you purchase a Leopard Catamaran you are given the opportunity to outfit her however you desire by choosing from our extensive option list. When purchasing though The Moorings, your boat has a nonnegotiable list of options, for the reason of keeping the charter fleet uniform.  As a Leopard Owner you could build your boat to fit the exact criteria of a Moorings Charter Catamaran, the only difference between the two boats would then be that the yachts are branded differently.

Aside from being sister companies, the boats are sister ships built by Robertson & Caine using the same mold for each model. Leopard 40 = Moorings 4000; Leopard 45 = Moorings 4500; Leopard 50 = Moorings 5000; Leopard 58 = Moorings 5800; Leopard 51 PC = Moorings 514PC; Leopard 43 PC = Moorings 433 PC.

Fast forward to 2018 and the two brands continue to coexist in harmony.   Leopard Catamarans has grown very fast over the past decade, spanning to six continents and 20 countries, becoming the industry’s leader in the production and delivery of quality catamarans for private and charter fleets worldwide.

DESIGN – INTERIOR & EXTERIOR

The Leopard 43 is a comfortable and reasonably fast passage maker able to be sailed short-handed. Based on the award-winning Leopard 42, the Leopard 43 is designed by Simonis and Voegd and built by Robertson and Caine, a large South African builder. These catamarans were built in two configurations, one for owners and one for the charter market. The owner’s version, called the Leopard 43 has three cabins and three heads. While the charter version, named the Moorings 4300, has a fitout of four cabins and four heads.

A solidly constructed hardtop provides good protection in the cockpit for enjoying life on the water. The hardtop also offers a convenient location for the solar panels and the traveler to mount to, reducing clutter in the cockpit. One unfavorable aspect of the design of the Leopard 43 is the bridge deck, which has a low clearance with the water and is known to slam in rough seas. Strong davits securely hold the dinghy, which is mounted on a full walk around duckboard on the transom. This is a practical design and convenient during sailing and provides excellent access to the tender and ocean at anchor. With a total of 74 Leopard 43’s built between 2004 and 2007, they remain a popular catamaran and don’t last long in the used catamaran marketplace.

Sailors on the Leopard 43 have easy access to the water with the large duckboard and the large sugar scoop steps. These would be very useful for entering the water to go snorkeling or pulling your freshly caught fish aboard. An outdoor shower is located at the port scoop is ideal for rinsing off afterward. There is plenty of room on the aft rail for the grill to be mounted.

Upfront, seats are mounted on the pulpit, creating a nice space to sit and watch the world go by or for enjoying sundowners. And the trampolines are a good size for both comfort and safety. Grab rails are mounted on the cabin top and are convenient when moving along the deck.

The helm is located on the starboard side with excellent visibility and protection. It is enhanced by a windscreen Bimini that attaches between the cabin rooftop and the hardtop for bad weather. The entire cockpit area has adequate protection from the hardtop, and clears can be rolled down quickly if poor weather were to arrive. The table in the cockpit has a wraparound lounge and can seat eight, using two additional seats. Most lines are run back to the cockpit and helm with an electric winch providing the muscle power. Additional winches are located on the mast.

Entry into the saloon from the cockpit is over a seaworthy raised bulkhead and through a large opening door. The adjacent side of the door are folding panels that open out for further ventilation and space. A thoughtful design in the cabin is the louvered forward windows, which provide very good protection from the sun. And the forward windows incorporate opening hatches for ventilation.

The lounge is located starboard, seating six with one on a moveable seat, and ample space is available for dining or cocktails and relaxing. The table does go down for extra sleeping berth, with the cushions stowed away in the port side v-berth. A large amount of convenient storage space is available underneath the lounge seats, perfect for food and drinks.

The U shaped galley is mounted up and forward on the port side. They are comprised of two sinks and a very thoughtfully recessed dish drying rack, which would be perfect for securing dishes while sailing. The separate fridge and freezer, two burner stove and oven with lots of counter space makes cruising life on this catamaran very comfortable. A chart table and navigation station is located on the starboard side. The wiring can be easily accessed behind the comprehensive electrical control panel at the navigation station.

ACCOMMODATIONS

The accommodation offers comfort and privacy, with ample room for guests to join in the adventure. The owner’s versions consist of three cabins and a single v-berth in the bow, with the owner’s berth taking up the entire starboard hull. Conveniently, a door closes the owner’s berth from the salon area for privacy. The other option, the charter version has four double berths and two single berths in the bows. The double cabins are spacious, with a private head in each and storage provided underneath the queen-sized beds.

The berths are equipped with shelving, cabin lights, reading lights, ventilation fans, closets with hanging space, and the owner’s cabin area also features a desk. Some berths have air conditioning, and depending on the model, it can be controlled separately for each berth. Removable ceiling panels are fitted throughout for ease of inspection and maintenance.

Overall, this catamaran has a well-designed and well finished interior fitout.
