This is home to the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest reef eco-system, offering unparalleled opportunities for sublime cruising and thrilling underwater discovery. Covering an area seven times larger than the United Kingdom, the possibilities in Queensland for superyacht charters are immense.

While the Great Barrier Reef stands out as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, Queensland is also blessed with vibrant city experiences and sensational rainforest escapades, making this region a truly inexhaustible source of adventure. This is the all-encompassing destination for superyachts, ripe for luxury escapes and supported by world-class superyacht infrastructure. It is no wonder that so many superyachts choose Queensland as their base for exploring the South Pacific.

Great Barrier Reef & Whitsundays

The Great Barrier Reef is Australia’s most precious gift to the world and epitomises the adventurous spirit of superyacht charters. This yachting utopia stretches for 2,300 km along Queensland’s glorious coastline, and boasts over 3,000 individual reef systems and coral cays. For visiting superyachts, the sheer diversity of reefs provides experiences like no other. Divers and snorkelers revel in this underwater Eden, with over 600 types of hard and soft coral to uncover, along with 1,626 different species of fish to encounter.

There is no greater destination for barefoot island-hopping adventures than the Great Barrier Reef. Superyachts provide an opulent base from which to explore 600 continental islands, each glowing with its own unique natural landscape. In the northern region of the Great Barrier Reef, Lizard Island is a sumptuous luxury resort surrounded by mesmerising natural beauty. Lizard Island is a popular start or end point for a charter through the exhilarating ribbon reefs, with the delightful seaside town of Port Douglas at the other end.

Further south, The Whitsundays are one of the true yachting pleasures of the world, with 74 glorious white-sand islands surrounded by sparkling turquoise waters. This is the pinnacle of beach bliss and laid-back island glamour, where guests can either delve into the awe-inspiring waters or unwind in hedonistic resorts on Hamilton Island and Airlie Beach. The pristine natural surroundings of the Whitsundays offer an idyllic superyacht retreat, though the area is certainly packed full of adrenaline-pumping water sports activities. Some of the most enchanting dive and snorkel sites in Australia are found in the Whitsundays, and so too is the iconic Heart Reef.

City Thrills

Superyachts are welcomed into Queensland’s thriving cities, from the state capital of Brisbane up to the charming city of Cairns. These cities act as phenomenal bases to explore Queensland’s sun-drenched coastline and glistening cruising grounds, and they each offer something spectacularly unique.

Cairns is a major superyacht homeport for the Asia Pacific region, with close proximity to the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef but also to the South Pacific islands beyond. Here you will find fantastic superyacht facilities, exquisite restaurants and luxury hotels throughout the city which allow for a seamless transition to land. With no overbearing high-rise buildings, Cairns has the aesthetic of a quaint coastal town and its relaxing atmosphere enables guests to detach from the stresses of the outside world. Cairns offers fascinating on land activities to enhance your experience of Australia, notably the Daintree Rainforest and captivating Aboriginal tours.

In South East Queensland, Brisbane and the Gold Coast are well established as superyacht hotspots. Not only do they boast incredible infrastructure, but the surrounding area is filled with islands and secluded beaches to enjoy. The cosmopolitan city of Brisbane boasts a perfect balance between modern city luxuries and relaxing open green spaces, with an intriguing culture to immerse yourself in. Brisbane has a packed calendar of major sporting events, musical performances and cutting-edge theatre to explore, and there is also plenty of thrilling cruising opportunities in the surrounding area. Moreton Bay is a boating hub adored by locals and international visitors alike, while North Stradbroke and Fraser Islands also provide fabulous retreats where you can embrace the outdoors in a stunning setting.

The Gold Coast presents superyachts with the ideal balance of luxury city amenities and beach glamour. Its renowned tourist hub of Surfers Paradise is dotted with fine dining restaurants and lively bars, many overlooking its immaculate coastline. The southern beaches of the Gold Coast provide a more laid-back, boho atmosphere where surfers flock to make the most of this sublime environment. Behind the glittering sands is an enthralling hinterland, less than an hour from the city. Incredible treks through this undisturbed natural Eden lead to magical waterfalls, providing a splendid contrast after days spent at sea. Along the Spit to the north of the Gold Coast are some of the largest marina facilities in Australia, including Southport Yacht Club – a favourite for visiting superyachts.

Rainforest and Hinterland Adventures

The natural beauty of Queensland certainly doesn’t stop with its kaleidoscopic reef experiences. Cairns is not just a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, but also the UNESCO Heritage listed Daintree Rainforest. The Daintree offers an eclectic mix of activities and encounters, from ATV tours through the rainforest to enlightening Aboriginal tours of the ancient land. Queensland’s strength in diverse experiences is second to none, and exploring the Sunshine State you will feed your hunger for adventure.

The Gold Coast hinterland is teeming with diverse flora and fauna, with Lamington and Springbrook National Parks offering a retreat into a natural paradise. The volcanic landscape of Springbrook is as enthralling as it gets for land-based adventures, characterised by gorges, rocky outcrops and magical waterfalls.

Noosa, on the Sunshine Coast, is Australia’s relaxation capital. This subtropical resort town is known for its spectacular coastal scenery and the beautiful Noosa National Park. In Noosa, you can embrace all things wild as you take in the awe-inspiring scenery and come across native Australian plants and wildlife. Along Noosa’s dramatic headland are the Fairy Pools, natural saltwater pools where visitors can take a plunge into azure waters.

Superyacht Infrastructure

Queensland is a major superyacht hub for the Asia Pacific region, with world-class marina and shipyard facilities which attract superyachts from all over the world. Cairns Marlin Marina and Southport Yacht Club have some of the largest berthing facilities in Australia, while Queensland is also a mecca for refit and maintenance. The marine infrastructure in Queensland makes this an ideal destination for superyachts to stay long-term.

Weather : Queensland has a tropical climate that varies from region to region. The wet season runs from November to April and brings heavy rain, thunderstorms, cyclones, and floods. The dry season runs from May to October and brings sunny days, cool nights, and low humidity. You should check the weather forecast before you go boating and avoid sailing in bad weather conditions.

Marine stingers : Queensland’s waters are home to some of the most venomous marine creatures in the world, such as box jellyfish, irukandji jellyfish, blue-ringed octopus, cone shells, and stonefish. These marine stingers can cause severe pain, paralysis, or even death if you come into contact with them. You should wear protective clothing such as stinger suits or wetsuits when swimming or snorkeling in the water. You should also avoid touching or picking up any unfamiliar marine animals or shells.

Sharks : Sharks are common in Queensland’s waters, but shark attacks are rare and usually occur in remote areas or near river mouths. You can reduce the risk of shark encounters by following some simple rules such as swimming in patrolled beaches, avoiding swimming at dawn or dusk, staying close to the shore, avoiding swimming near bait fish or fishing activities, and not wearing shiny jewelry or bright colors.

Emergency contacts : In case of an emergency on land or at sea, you should call 000 for police, fire, or ambulance services. You can also call 112 from your mobile phone if you have no network coverage. If you need marine assistance or rescue services, you can contact Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) on VHF Channel 16 or 27 MHz Channel 88. You can also contact Coast Guard on VHF Channel 16 or 27 MHz Channel 86.

Yachting in Queensland

By JOL Admin | 8 October 2008

Yachting as a sport and pastime has long been popular in Queensland with interstate races for craft twenty-two feet and under being sailed almost continuously over the last sixty years. With the formation of the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club in 1948 blue water yacht racing and cruising was also commenced and has become increasingly popular.

The Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race has also been popular, being held annually since 1949.  The race takes place each Easter on Good Friday, with the starting line just offshore from Shorncliffe Pier. Many don’t know that the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race has weathered worse storms than the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Cyclone Emily caused havoc as winds reached up to 96 knots during the 1972 race. There were no casualties but only five of the 25 race starters finished the race that year.

N Dashti

We were lucky enough to spend a day with Jamie on Moreton bay and can’t speak highly enough about it. Three of us with varied previous experience of sailing joined with a father and son to share in a day of learning the ropes. The day was tailored to our varied needs and at all times we were able to ask questions and glean experience from Jamie’s wealth of knowledge. We would highly recommend signing up for a course if you’re interested in getting back on the water after a hiatus. Thanks so much guys! It was a priceless day!

A few words from some of our happy customers

yachting queensland

The Ackinclose Family

This was the holiday of a lifetime. When we returned, we immediately got off the boat and walked straight into the office to book again for the following year.

We had an absolute blast. And really the boat was the centre piece of that. It was everything we could have asked for; spacious, luxurious, comfortable, plenty of water storage and fridge/freezer space, room to spread out, great cooking facilities, plenty of lounging areas and a hot shower and comfy bed at the end of every day.

Perhaps most importantly it allowed us to ‘choose our own adventure’! This holiday had it all…. turquoise waters, swimming, snorkeling, fishing, isolated beaches, white sand, incredible walks, beach combing, whales, dolphins, turtles, tropical fish, and some high sea adventures! It’s one thing to visit the Whitsundays, it’s another altogether to holiday ON the Whitsundays. Being on the water 24/7 is an experience unlike any other… it was pure joy!

We loved being on our own (the perfect covid safe holiday really!), enjoying each others company and everyday being an adventure. Not to mention relaxing and unwinding with the most amazing scenery and sunsets. This is a holiday you and your children will remember forever!

Billy & Friends

Thank you again to the Whitsunday Escape Crew for another amazing experience in the magnificent Whitsundays. We had a wonderful 10 days onboard the Seawind 1260 Volare, which kicked off with a great brief by Amee who was very thorough and very knowledgeable about operating Volare safely.

Throughout the charter the support from the ops team is first rate. Whether you want to know where the best place to overnight for the conditions, or if you need some advice about the boat, they will always go the extra mile to ensure you have the best holiday possible. Shoutout to Jordans mobile outboard repairs that paid us a quick visit in Stonehaven to help sort us out.

The absolute highlight for this trip was the time we had all of Whitehaven Beach entirely to ourselves for a few hours on a sunny afternoon. A magical moment that is unlikely to be repeated.

We’re already booked in for our next charter with Whitsunday Escape over Christmas and can’t wait to get back up there.

We were first time ‘bare boaters’ and a little nervous about going out to sea in a million-dollar catamaran but Whitsunday Escape couldn’t have been more helpful providing boating information and ensuring we had the prerequisite knowledge.

Big thanks to Lachy for his ‘pep talk’ to my crew before we set off.

Best family holiday ever and we loved every minute.

About Brisbane

Why is Brisbane a good sailing destination?

Sailing in Brisbane, Queensland, is an exquisite experience, and at Yachting.Rent, we believe in showcasing the best of this remarkable destination. The city is renowned for its beautiful and diverse waterways, with an array of sailing options that make it a top destination for both seasoned sailors and novices alike.

The river provides a tranquil setting for day cruises, with the option to stop at one of the riverside restaurants or cafes for a delightful meal.

Venture further into Moreton Bay, and you’ll be greeted by stunning islands and pristine waters. The Bay, home to Moreton Island and North Stradbroke Island, offers excellent opportunities for sailing, swimming, diving, and even spotting dolphins. Whether you want to explore the islands, cast a line for some deep-sea fishing, or simply relax on your yacht while enjoying the panoramic ocean views, Moreton Bay provides an ideal setting.

Weather is another factor that makes Brisbane a desirable sailing destination. With a subtropical climate, the city boasts warm, sunny weather for most of the year, perfect for sailing. What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Brisbane

At Yachting.Rent, we provide an array of premium boats that promise a memorable sailing experience in Brisbane, Queensland. However, one question we often encounter is – should you choose a sailing boat or a catamaran for your nautical adventure? The answer depends on your specific needs, preferences, and sailing experience.

Sailing boats are traditional, romantic, and provide a pure sailing experience. They’re often preferred by sailing purists for their responsiveness and deep-sea capability. A sailing boat will lean into the wind and allow you to feel every shift in the breeze. They’re perfect for navigating Brisbane River, where their narrow beams and deep keels make them ideal for tight maneuvers. Sailing boats we offer vary in size and design, allowing you to find one that matches your skills and requirements. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor looking for a responsive vessel or a beginner looking for a leisurely cruise, we’ve got a sailing boat for you.

Catamarans, on the other hand, offer stability, space, and speed. Their dual-hull design makes them incredibly stable, reducing seasickness. They’re renowned for their spacious living areas, making them perfect for groups and families. You can enjoy a sunny day out on Moreton Bay with a BBQ on the deck or relax in the comfortable indoor areas. Their shallow draft allows you to navigate closer to the shore and explore areas a sailing boat might not reach. Our fleet of catamarans includes various sizes and models, providing a unique blend of comfort and performance.

In conclusion, both sailing boats and catamarans offer unique benefits. Your choice between a sailing boat and a catamaran for your Brisbane adventure should reflect your sailing proficiency, the size of your group, and your desired experience. At Yachting.Rent, we’re here to assist you in making that choice. We ensure a personalized experience, matching you with a vessel that complements your skills and caters to your needs, promising an unforgettable sailing journey in the enchanting waters of Brisbane, Queensland.

Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron

The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron is Queensland’s oldest and one of the most prestigious recreational boating clubs.

It is also unique in the variety of recreational activities catered for within the one club. This web site is intended not only to provide up to date information for our existing members, but also to introduce visitors to our organisation and its facilities, and to convince them that they would feel at home among us.

The Squadron has a proud history of involvement in sailing, from the juniors in dinghies, through families enjoying the delights of relaxing on Moreton Bay, to our elite sailors competing with distinction in class championships and at international and Olympic regattas. Our Register currently includes a large number of power craft of various sizes, shapes and displacements, and these members enjoy friendly competition, both within their number and against members of other clubs both in Queensland and interstate.

yachting queensland

The establishment in 1994 of the RQYS Sailing School formalised various diverse teaching programs into a distinct unit with a focus on achieving high standards of competence in marine leisure activities, with an emphasis on youth. The major facility is located at Manly in Brisbane’s south-eastern Bayside suburbs, with a smaller ‘down the Bay’ premises at Canaipa Point on Russell Island in southern Moreton Bay.

The grounds of the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron contain facilities that are of the highest standard to meet all your sailing and social needs, including our much-envied rigging lawns and an unrivalled environment to wine, dine and relax in.

Roam in our Clubhouse and explore our heritage

Your first stop into the Squadron is our Clubhouse which displays our rich heritage and memorabilia from members past and present. Here you will find the Miller Gallery where trophies, boat displays and many artworks including pieces of history are displayed. The Gallery is entrance to the Auditorium, Commodore’s Lounge and Girdis Room all found within the Clubhouse. If you would like a tour of these areas, please ask our friendly Clubhouse receptionist who will be more than happy to show you and provide you with some further information.

Dine in our Café and Restaurant  amidst the beautiful view of Manly Harbour

Under the RQYS Clubhouse Pavilion, you will find our RQ Bar, Boardwalk Café and our Squadron Harbour View Restaurant.

With the members bar open from Monday at 4pm and food service opening for lunch and dinner on Wednesday- Sunday, members and guests can enjoy open-air dining and lavish meals created by our acclaimed Squadron chefs.

Cavill Building

Built in 1964, the Cavill Building with its scallop design was the first building on Squadron premises. Upstairs you will find a Flags Function room which holds the most stunning view of the Bay and private bar for functions, below you will find our most oldest heritage including a Board listing all of our Past Commodore’s and Life Members.

Rigging Lawns

Our Rigging Lawn, just outside the pavilion is particularly busy during regattas with as much as 100 boats preparing for the day ahead! When it is quiet, you may catch a glimpse of a wedding ceremony held on the lawn in front of our beautiful harbour milieu.

Through our secure access gates, the RQYS Marina can accommodate up to 572 vessels in floating berths and 300 vessels in dry storage so no matter what size boat you have, we can accommodate to your needs. A dedicated administration office in the marina can assist you with any enquiry and there is extensive car parking throughout. Our slipping facilities include a travelift, slewing crane and service area with frames and for a little extra care; there is a Marine Trade centre dedicated to marine engineering and boat repairs for all makes of vessels.

The Squadron accommodates trailerable and Dinghy vessels easily. You can be assured that your vessel will be safe and secure with our allocated hardstand spaces. Please contact our marina office to secure your hardstand space today. Several courtesy bays are also provided for members cars with trailers attached for short duration stays.

Please note that dinghies and vessels must not be left on rigging lawns or in the marina without consent from the marina office.

The Squadron has two ramps for members use. The most common ramp is utilised primarily as the main access for dinghy classes and can be used for the launching and retrieving of trailer boats. The Eastern ramp or the ‘all tide ramp’ may be used for launching and retrieval of trailerable boats. However, if you intend to use this ramp be aware it is accessed through the marina hardstand area and launching and retrieving should not interfere with work within this area.

Even though the ramps are cleaned regularly, we ask that you should always exercise caution as they can be slippery. On busier days, a ramp marshall may control traffic on the middle ramp and please listen to any direction given by them so that you can access the ramp in the safest way possible. A free wash down facility is available on the concrete apron at the head of each ramp and we ask that boats are not washed down on the lawn.

Every Member is given a personalised access card which grants them the use of the Squadron depending on their category of membership.

Our newly installed proximity system makes it easy for members to enter and leave the Squadron at any time of the day and can enable bar and café charges and fuel use with one simple card.

For visitors of members, we can also provide temporary access upon request. Please contact the Squadron office for more information.

Tradespersons working on members boats that do not possess a Trades Pass must advise the office to gain access. Office Hours: 8am to 5pm Monday – Friday. Regular visiting tradespersons and delivery suppliers are encouraged to purchase a Trades Pass at an annual cost and can chose between a 5 day or 7 day pass.

Please note that use of members tags by vehicles other than members own vehicles is not allowed. Tailgating is prohibited and may cause damage to vehicles. Temporary tags are available for periods up to one month to persons in the following categories on payment of a refundable deposit.

Located at the north eastern extremity of the Squadron grounds, this building incorporates wheelchair friendly showers and toilets and coin operated laundry. Access to these facilities on the lower level is by way of a members access pass. The upper level is an elevated viewing platform providing excellent views of the junior sailing fleets.

At Borrow A Boat we're on a mission to make boating more accessible and to make it easier for you to get on the water. We believe boating should be available to everyone, and we can help the boating industry, boat owners, marinas, and everyone who wants to go boating by providing a 21st-century boating marketplace. Borrow A Boat is the best place to find and rent boats of all sorts, from a canal and riverboat across Europe to a sailing boat, motor boat, catamaran across North America, the Mediterranean, Caribbean and further afield, along with some of the world's most impressive superyachts and luxury yacht charters.

Boats or Yachts Available For Rent Or Charter In Queensland

Where it comes to chartering or renting boats in Queensland below is a list of the typical types of boats that you can hire on Borrow A Boat with a description of the boat type. If you can't find the individual boat charter you are looking for when you do a search in Queensland it's worthwhile searching nearby locations as your chosen boat type might be available nearby.

When searching a geographical area on Borrow A Boat you can filter by the below boat types. There is also the option to further filter your searches by price, the number of guests, cabins or bathrooms, what year the boat or sailing yacht was launched, the boat length and the boat manufacturer.

Sailing Yacht (Sailboat): From €120/£100/$135 a day up to whatever you can afford, monohull sailing yachts are fun to sail at all points of the wind and an affordable way to get around if your island hopping or finding your own secluded coves or sandy beaches along with longer cruises. Sizes range from those for a couple or small family to a full sized luxury charter yacht.

Catamaran: Luxury catamarans are stable and spacious, with quick sailing performance, and and have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Better for larger groups, they have lots of room for water toys, and are big enough for a little privacy. A catamaran charter is easy and comfortable for novices not used to heeling and are loved by families due to their extra space when compared to a monohull. Typically far more luxurious than a sailboat the larger catamarans have en suite toilets and showers in the staterooms as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck.

Power Catamaran: These types of boats are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam also means more deck space and as they don't have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran rental or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter, consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailing vacation with an experienced skipper.

Luxury Yacht: Luxury yacht charters are available for either a sailing yacht (sailboat), catamaran or motorboat and will have a crew and host/hostess on hand to cater for whatever your needs are along with a skipper who will have a detailed knowledge of your cruising area. On a crewed yacht charter of this kind you get to create your own personal itinerary and will have far greater range than on other boats which allows for lots of variety in how you travel and what you do.

Superyacht: A superyacht or sometimes called mega yacht are boats which are least 24 metres (79 feet) in length up to 180 metres (590 feet) and can either be sailing yachts (sailboats) or motorboats. These types of boats are most frequently found in the Med of Caribbean and due to their size they will have a large chartering area and can typically pick you up from whatever location you require rather than you being required to get to a set marina to start your charter. They are fully crewed with professional staff who will cater for your every need along with a skipper who will have extensive knowledge of your chosen cruising areas.

Motorboat: This covers a wide variety of boats from a motor yacht with cabins to a private boat trip for a fishing trip but all of the these are comfortable seagoing boats with a kick of speed should you want to cover a bigger distance on the day.

RIB: Very much day boats for fishing and day cruising, RIBs are a lot of fun for a day afloat. They can be very quick and are great should you be in a town on holiday and fancy seeing the coast or finding secluded sandy beaches to get away from it all.

Skippered Yacht Charter or Bareboat

When it comes to boat hire or yacht charter in Queensland you typically have two choices - bareboat yacht hire or skippered yacht charter.

When using Borrow A Boat you can filter all boat searches to be with or without skipper depending on what you are looking for and below we cover some of the main points to consider for your boat hire.

Skippered Charter: A skippered yacht charter gives you the advantage of being able to get afloat without having to invest in getting sailing qualifications before hand. For a monohull sailing yacht you will pay €120/£100/$135 plus a day extra for the skipper, as well as their food and a tip at the end.

When you get to a luxury yacht or superyacht charter with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of boat rental on your sailing holiday.

In some cases skippers will also be the yacht or boat owners (typically day trips) which means they will know all the best secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.

For day trips you will often be able to use a skipper as well and prices will vary depending on the type of boat.

Bareboat Yacht Charter: For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the boat while choosing their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can skipper these boats (typically up to 54 feet/16.5 metres in length) yourself.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Yacht In Queensland

If you are on a gulet or skippered yacht charter you do not need a license to sail a yacht out of Queensland. This is also the case where you are renting a small motorboat without a cabin for a day trip around the local islands or beaches.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter, here are some examples of sailing qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will be able to take a bareboat charter out of Queensland, these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted.

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

We are confident that our prices are the most competitive and transparent in the market.

We won't charge any booking fees when you make a booking with us.

Australia weather: rain and storms tipped for parts of south-east over Easter long weekend

Parts of South Australia, NSW and Victoria can expect heavy rain as remnants of Cyclone Megan and a low-pressure trough over the Northern Territory and Queensland move south

Parts of south-east Australia are set for a soaking this Easter long weekend, with thunderstorms and heavy rain forecast for South Australia, western New South Wales and north-west Victoria.

The rain is caused by the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Megan and a related low-pressure trough covering the Northern Territory and Queensland, but expected to move south later this week.

The Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Sarah Scully said tropical moisture covering south-east Queensland would move to central Queensland on Thursday and west Queensland on Friday.

As tropical moisture moves south, parts of South Australia , western NSW and north-western parts of Victoria could face heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over the long weekend. But, Scully said, it was difficult to forecast exactly where thunderstorms would form and hard to conclude where the heaviest rainfalls would be.

She said severe thunderstorms were forecast for the NT, and indicated a possibility of flash flooding and the interruption of transportation routes.

Flood watches had been declared for more than 40 Queensland and NT rivers. Currently, there were flood watches in place for south-west Queensland, the Cape York peninsula and parts of the gulf country. The BoM advised flooding was likely in the upper Victoria River, Victoria River below Kalkarindji, Tanami Desert, Barkly and Western Desert.

Rainfall records for this month had been broken in some places in the NT, including Rabbit Flat (444mm, wettest month on record), Territory Grape Farm (200mm, wettest March on record) and Arltunga (258mm, wettest month since 1974).

Scully said extreme levels of rain were to be expected during the tropical cyclone season.

The extreme weather watcher Thomas Hinterdorfer predicted rainfall of more than 50mm occurring over Queensland’s south-east coast, Wide Bay and Burnett, along with some falls of more than 100mm in some areas over the next three days.

“It wouldn’t be a shock to see some isolated falls of more than 200mm either.”

Pools of water form after steady rain over Mount Doreen Station, Australia

But for NT cattle farmers accustomed to dry climates, the rain was welcome news.

Lil Bryant, the manager of Mount Doreen station, said the rain was “really beneficial” because cooler autumn temperatures ensure the sun won’t burn the grass and the feed will be able to sustain cattle for longer periods of time.

Mount Doreen station, which is 320km north-west of Alice Springs, recorded 320-330mm of rain in March, Bryant said. The average annual rainfall was around 350mm.

The recent rains had been steady showers instead of floods, she said, giving the country the chance to grow grass instead of washing material away.

“It’s very positive for us and I’m really looking forward to the rest of the year,” she said.

While she described the rainfall as “not a once in a lifetime event”, she said it was unique to have so much rain in March when the weather was otherwise quite dry.

She said the BoM had predicted a dry year ahead, so “it was nice they got it wrong”.

But it hasn’t all been smooth sailing, as the wet weather hindered the transport of trucks and hay into the station and delayed the station’s mustering and cattle work schedule.

Nevertheless, she said, the cattle would be nice and healthy when the rain clears up, but the rain might cause a busier end of year.

“You’ve got to work with the weather that you get handed … so you’ve got to make some changes and go with the flow,” she said.

“And we’re definitely never going to complain about the rain.”

Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane can expect fine temperatures this weekend, with the three cities expected to record maximum temperatures in the mid-20s, with minimal rainfall forecast.
