Still haven't figured out what a Yatch is - perhaps like a Yelapa area Chupacabra? Anyway, we visited one evening as several of the participants in our retreat were performing there in a musical group. The setting, as all point out, is delightful; hanging right over the beach with the boats bobbing out in the sunset-tinged water. Quite magical. That's pretty much where the magic ends. The restaurant is a real lazy, poorly run operation. Service was very challenged, slow and completely inattentive - the worst we experienced in the area by far, our orders were wrong, etc. My food was average for the area. Some fresh fish and veg. Drinks were also just average. The music was great and there is a small dance area where folks threw down. The real deal killer is the half assed way things are run there. The "steps" to a high elevated area where we sat consisted of a pile of bricks. It kind of looks like something - like an actual step. But it is just a pile of loose bricks. When leaving, my wife stepped down on this, the loose bricks shifted and she took a very serious fall - backwards and "fortunately" striking her head on a wooden chair before going flat to the concrete floor. Members of our group including medical professionals rushed to her and we were able to get her to an empty table where she recovered. Someone in the group had to ask for some ice from the bar and did get a small bag - shared between her head and ankle which was seriously sprained. Nobody from the restaurant came over, offered to help or even acknowledged that this happened. The show went on. We later heard that several other people fell - less seriously - on this same step later that evening! My wife suffered with this injury for the rest of our vacation. I have to acknowledge the kindness shown to us by several other patrons including wonderful lady who ran home and gave us a roll of KT tape to help stabilize the ankle. Never really got the chance to thank her properly. Obviously in pretty much any normal location, this would be a very serious litigious situation and gross negligence by the restaurant. Business as usual apparently at the Yatch Club. My wife is an attorney but we're not litigious folks and I feel for and respect the limited resources available in small rural towns like Yelapa. I get it. BUT there are MANY fine establishments there who would NOT put their patrons at risk with this kind of very dangerous situation. Here's a suggestion, buy 20 pesos worth of mortar and cement those fu#%ing bricks together. To me the fact that this has clearly gone on for awhile, they considered it fine, nothing was even done to stabilize the situation THAT evening after a dramatic fall that the entire restaurant witnessed - leading as I said to other falls during the evening tells you everything you need to know about this business and those running it. AVOID.

Elena is the sweetest and enchanting owner of this breakfast, lunch, dinner & dancing (Wednesdays & Saturdays ) venue. The recipes are incredibly tasty and healthy. Her touch is in every detail. Musicians, visual artists, locals join the place because of the good vibes and good prices. Specials in the menu are surprising. This is my place in Yelapa, for sure.

Not very busy during the week, very nice view over the bay and good food. Nice candlelit, low-light ambiance, very clean bathroom. The drinks are not very strong, I'd stick with beer. Flavorful and healthy dinner options.

The ambience is amazing. The food and drinks are incredible fresh and well priced. The problem that I have is that after I paid my tab the waiter came back to the table telling me that I did not pay enough money. I know that I did. Not wanting to argue or make a big deal out of it I forked out some more money. I was invited here again on my travels a few months later and SAME thing! I even told my friend about it when we sat down for dinner. I've been traveling through Mexico for 10 years and even have a house there. I know how to count money and properly convert it. I would just caution you on your visit here. To keep this in mind. Take a video of how much money you put out and them walking away with it. And then coming back with a different amount and showing you or telling you that you did not pay the full amount. I have never had a problem with this any other place but here.

Photo of C D.

Nice ambiance at night, wait staff is very friendly. We didn't eat here only enjoyed cocktails so I can't give 5 stars.

Yelapa, Mexico: The Ultimate Guide to Mexico’s Secluded Beach Town

Yelapa, Mexico is situated in a cove on the Pacific coast about an hour boat ride away from Puerto Vallarta. There are no roads, cars, or ATMs in this town. In fact, some might call this secluded beach town frozen in time, which is why I found it so appealing. Most people take day trips from Puerto Vallarta to Yelapa but we opted to stay in town for two nights to get the full experience.

SEE ALSO:  Sayulita, Mexico: The Ultimate Guide to Mexico’s Laid-Back Surf Town

If you’re looking to reconnect with the simple things in life, hike to a secluded waterfall, and experience a one-in-a-lifetime boat tour, then Yelapa is for you! I’ll walk you through where to stay, where to eat, and things to do in Yelapa, Mexico!

Yelapa, Mexico: The Ultimate Guide to Mexico's Most Secluded Beach

Things You Need to Know About Yelapa

  • There are no cars in Yelapa. The only way to get there is via a water taxi.
  • There are no ATMs in Yelapa so make sure you bring plenty of cash.
  • Yelapa is famous for its pie (yep that’s right.) There are women who sell fresh, delicious pies right on the beach. I recommend the coconut or lemon pie!
  • If you get seasick make sure to take Dramamine before boarding the water taxi.

How to Get to Yelapa

Yelapa is a small beach town in the state of Jalisco on the pacific coast of Mexico. The closest major city is Puerto Vallarta, which can easily be reached by water taxi. Here are two ways to reach Yelapa.

  • Take a 30min water taxi from Boca de Tomatlan.
  • Take a 45min water taxi from Playa Los Muertos Pier in Puerto Vallarta’s Romantic Zone.

HELPFUL HINT : The water taxi should cost 350 pesos for a roundtrip ticket (which I would suggest) or 175 pesos one way.

Where to Stay in Yelapa

I found Airbnb to have the best options for places to stay in Yelapa. I’ve linked a few of my favorites, including the one we stayed in hosted by Miramar Yelapa . You can either stay in town, on the main beach, or on the opposite side of the beach. I recommend the opposite side of the beach, which is where we stayed. It’s much less touristy and closer to my favorite restaurants.

HELPFUL HINT : If this is your first time using Airbnb make sure to sign up with  this link  to receive $65 off your first stay!

Where to Eat in Yelapa

I had some fantastic meals in Yelapa. The most memorable being coconut pie and grilled fish kabobs with papaya salad. Most mornings we would wake up and make our way over to Cafe Bahia for breakfast burritos and pancakes before heading to the beach. While we only spent two nights in Yelapa we tried a number of restaurants.

Feel free to find your favorite spots to eat in Yelapa, or take a look at some of mine!

BREAKFAST + SNACK SPOTS

  • Cafe Bahia (great breakfast, loved the burritos)
  • Cafe Eclipse

What to Do in Yelapa

yelapa yacht club menu

Book a Snorkeling + Whale Watching Boat Ride

One of my favorite things we did in Yelapa was take a snorkeling/whale watching tour with Miramar Excursions . As I mentioned earlier, our Airbnb host runs this business with her husband and they do a fantastic job. We spent five hours touring the coast of Mexico, snorkeling, eating ceviche, and drinking the famous Pacifico.

Hike to A Secluded Waterfall in Yepapa

Yelapa has two waterfalls you can hike to. The most popular one is located in town, less than a 10 minute walk away from the Airbnb we stayed at . The more secluded waterfall is a 2.5-mile hike from town ( h ere are instructions .) If you have the time I would recommend hiking to the second waterfall. Not only is it stunning but we had the whole place to ourselves!

HELPFUL HINT: Make sure to look over these instructions , wear a bathing suit, pack a lunch, sunscreen, water, and towel.

Go Dancing at Yelapa Yacht Club

Every Wednesday and Saturday night at the Yelapa Yacht Club there is an outdoor dance floor with a live band. Enjoy dancing under the stars at this one-of-a-kind club.

Let me know if you plan on visiting Yelapa anytime soon! I hope this Yelapa Travel Guide helps you plan your next Mexico vacation. As always travel planning questions are welcome in the comments. I’m happy to help with trip-related advice.

Disappear to Yelapa

Disappear to Yelapa

“This is exactly how I remember it,” I say, standing on a wide, flat rock jutting into the sea. We’re in Yelapa, Mexico, a tiny seaside village 45 minutes by boat – the only way to get here ― from bustling Puerto Vallarta. My husband, Pete, hops across a few small boulders and joins me. A rooster crows in the distance, and the low hum of an outboard motor draws our attention to a panga returning with the morning’s catch. The sun sparkles on the water and small waves roll politely toward us.

Although Yelapa has baby-stepped into the 21st century ― it finally got electricity six years ago, and you can now make a phone call, check your email, and get a latte ― what’s best about this place, aside from its glittering tropical beauty, is its timelessness. In the carless village, donkeys still serve as cargo trucks, sunshine and roosters are the only alarm clocks, and life’s major decisions are of the snorkeling-or-siesta variety. Yelapa, people say, is what coastal Mexico used to be before it was discovered by the tourist throngs.

But these days, little Yelapa is hot. In the last couple of years, it’s emerged as one of the must-visit destinations in Mexico ― or anywhere. Hilary Swank vacations here (I’ve seen her), and so does Peter Coyote (seen him too!). Yoga retreats are held here, and it’s been written up all over the place.

Still, I’ll always know this place as my childhood paradise, where I went to fourth grade and spent my afternoons snorkeling in search of moray eels, swimming under waterfalls, and exploring the paths that traverse this town. And on this visit, I am dragging my husband on a trip down memory lane, attempting, I suppose, to preserve it in my mind as it was.

When we first arrive in Yelapa, we forgo the safer exit onto the small pier in the village and instead choose to jump off the boat directly onto the main beach, risking a swamping and some soggy suitcases for the sake of that much more time on this lovely stretch of sand.

“When I was a kid,” I tell Pete, “there wasn’t even a pier. You used to have to get rowed in by dugout canoe. Watching tourists wipe out was a local pastime.”

We stash our luggage and make for two lounge chairs under a thatched-palm palapa . It takes about five minutes before a piece of my Yelapan past comes to us.

Pie lady

“Pie, señorita?” A stern-looking woman, with a giant plastic container balanced on her head, is blocking my sun, and I am grateful. It’s Augustina.

Yelapa is famous for its pies, baked by two competing local women who strut up and down the beach balancing lemon meringues on their heads. About a million years ago, I used to sell pies after school for Augustina’s sister, Juanita, to earn pesos for Cokes.

She unloads her wares, but I don’t even have to look. Without hesitation, I go for a slice of chocolate coconut. Pete nearly has a breakdown trying to decide, but finally settles on apple. Don’t worry, I tell him. If there is one certainty, it’s that Augustina will be here again tomorrow.

WATERFALL AND DISCO BALL

But the next day, we skip the beach. I am taking Pete to see the waterfall. Not the tiny one in town that the day tourists go to see, but upriver to the Cathedral.

As we tramp along the dusty path, crisscrossing the shallow river, we pass laundry drying in the sun, a huge old sow napping in the shade, and men on horses returning from distant ranches. I regale Pete with fascinating stories from my past. “This is where I lost my sandal in the current once,” I say. Or, “I got bucked off Chocolate here.”

It can’t be more than a few miles to the Cathedral, but we are more than ready for a dip when we arrive. As expected, the wide, green swimming hole is deserted. We jump in and float on our backs, feeling like the stars of our own castaway movie.

As we’re drying ourselves on the warm rock afterward, I can’t resist. “We used to catch crawfish here,” I say before allowing the sound of the water to lull us to sleep.

The nap was a good thing because it’s Saturday night, and Pete and I are going out: He’s putting on clean shorts, and I have pulled out my orange flip-flops. It’s disco night at the Yelapa Yacht Club.

As we walk down the beach and along the cobblestone paths, I babble, pointing out the tree where the chickens roost at night and repeating a story about the El Niño year when people continued to boogie as waves crashed over the dance floor.

When we arrive at the club, really just an open-air restaurant with a cement floor and a cantankerous sound system, people are finishing up dinner at the candlelit tables and Bob Marley tunes are luring Yelapa’s collection of expat artists, dreamers, and throwbacks out to the floor.

Pete needs a beer and a shot of raicilla , the local hooch made from agave, before he’ll take me for a twirl. But soon he’s swaying with the rest of us to “Purple Rain.”

It’s the morning after the dance when I take him on a walk to the point, past what could be considered Yelapa’s fancy neighborhood, in search of that otherwise nondescript rock where I used to hang out and gossip with friends. As usual, I narrate, pointing out the place where my friend Andrea threw a mango at a wasp’s nest. But now I’m wistful because even though Yelapa is untouched compared with most places, nothing is immune to change.

And then I see it: my rock. There are now a few bright plastic kayaks on the tiny beach next to it, but it is otherwise exactly what it was more than 25 years ago. And 2,500 years before that too.

As we head back to town, I’m tempted to recount yet another memory. But I stop myself and make a silent promise to spend the rest of the trip in the moment. This is not the Yelapa of 1981, after all. It’s the Yelapa of today, and it is still my idea of paradise.

There are direct flights from most major airports in the West to Puerto Vallarta. From there, water taxis ($11 one-way) to Yelapa leave several times a day from the pier at Playa de los Muertos. Check out palapainyelapa.com and yelapa.info for more area information, and plan to ask locals for directions once you arrive; Yelapa is a small town, and few places use street addresses. All prices are listed in U.S. dollars.

WHERE TO STAY

Hotel Lagunita Thatched-roof casitas with mosquito nets and open-air construction infuse the place with a languid, tropical feel. We prefer the larger ocean-view rooms. INFO: From $80; +52-322-209-5055.

WHERE TO EAT

Yelapa has many good restaurants; some are seasonal, and most are pretty casual about sticking to regular business hours. Here are our favorites.

Barracuda Pizza Lounge Pizza in paradise at this open-air lounge in the sand. A great place for cocktail hour. INFO: $; at Hotel Lagunita.

Pollo Bollo Enormous plates of amazing grilled fish, ribs, and chicken. It’s worth seeking out this no-frills, open-air restaurant (pronounced “Poy-yo Boy-yo”). INFO: $; dinner Tue-Wed and Fri-Sun; +52-322-209-5027.

Tres Amigos Classic Mexican dishes like conchinita pibil (slow-roasted pork with pineapple) and ceviche. Candles twinkle at night and each table rests on the sand under its own palapa . INFO: $; breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily; at Hotel Lagunita.

Yelapa Yacht Club This open-air restaurant (there are no boats) on the playita in the village has been a fixture in expat life for three decades. INFO: Dinner ($$) and disco (free) on Wed and Sat nights.

Best Vallarta Restaurants Only Accessible By Boat

What beach are you exploring? Where should you eat?

A guide to help you make the tastiest decision of where to eat on your tour…because hey, let’s make it the best it can be!

We know you came for the snorkeling and the beaches, and maybe a cerveza or a margarita or two, but a good restaurant and delicious food can make your trip! Here is a list of our top restaurant choices in the destinations we visit. We hope it helps you answer that age old question…what do I eat?

Tinos Oasis – $$

Situated right on the beach, Tino’s Oasis is the perfect spot to watch the hustle and bustle of Yelapa, if you can call it that. We can’t get enough of their passion fruit Margaritas, fresh coconut piña coladas or Mexican moonshine limonades . If you have not gotten a chance to try aguachile yet on this trip, shrimp sashimi cooked with lime, cilantro, avocado, spicy chillies and cucumber, this is the place to do it as it is always fresh and seasoned to perfection. Every restaurant has their particular recipe, and Tino’s recipe does not disappoint. Don’t forget to say hi to Hector and Flor two of our favorite waiters on the beach.

Yelapa Yacht Club -$$$

Not only does it sound swanky, it is beach swanky. Nestled in the heart of Yelapa village, the Yelapa Yacht club has a simple yet elegant menu which matches the vibe. The tortilla soup here is by far the best tortilla soup we have tried in any restaurant in the bay. The chicken broth with creamy cheese is delectable and the contrast in textures from the crunchy tortilla chips and the soft rich avocado and cream make it a fiesta in your mouth. It is a little hard to find, but do not worry we will show you the way, Yelapa is practically our second home.

Chicos Beach Club – Yelapa – $$$

Looking for more of a party vibe in Yelapa, Chicos is the place for you. With electronic beach music, fantastic cocktails and great food, the vibe is right at chicos. On top of that, Chicos is known for its amazing view and excellent service.

Yelp: yelp.com

Cafe Bahia – Yelapa -$

Arriving hungry, well do not worry you do not have to walk far for an amazing and organic local meal. Situated at the south dock in Yelapa, Cafe Bahia is Canadian owned by a trained pastry chef, so do not forget to order dessert. Although they do have some meat options, they focus on vegetarian dishes, making this the perfect restaurant if you have vegetarians in your group. The bean soup is one of our favorites, super filling and will not hurt your wallet.

Quimixto Waterfall Restaurant – $$

Is it not everyone’s dream on vacation to visit a secluded waterfall? The waterfall at Quimixto is a dream come true, especially after the hike or donkey ride to get to the falls. The traditional fresh food they serve leaves our mouth watering every time. The menu consists of typical Mexican specialty items including fresh guacamole and our all time favorite shrimp quesadillas, and you should definitely order a refreshing coconut to replenish your electrolytes.

Las Animas:

Los Conos – $$

This restaurant definitely makes the cut for one of the best restaurants in the bay! And we are not the only ones that think that, every captain and marinero in the area will agree. They are famous for their Zarandeado Fish, which is a 500 year old traditional way of preparing red snapper with beer, dried chili paste and lemon among other spices. If you are looking for an authentic dish from this region of Mexico it is a must try and perfect for sharing. Feeling very hungry the seafood platter is massive and comes with all the traditional Mexican fixings, beans, tortillas and guacamole. Don’t forget to enjoy the view while enjoying your lunch, Los Conos is the perfect place to stare out on to the beautiful Pacific Ocean and watch all the people coming and going from the always popular Las Animas Beach.

Restaurants by Reservation

Ocean Grill – Colomitos Beach – $$$$

Looking for a gourmet experience with impeccable views? You have come to the right place. Ocean Grill looks like a tree house placed on the side of a cliff overlooking the turquoise waters of Mexico’s smallest beach, Colomitos. Kids are not allowed unfortunately but it’s a must as the unique dishes of gourmet fusion are some of the best in the bay with equally as delightful views.

Casa Maraika – Playa del Caballo – $$$$

A boutique hotel with a high end beach club, Casa Maraika is a famous stop for luxury yacht tours. Their menu consists of a variety of dishes to please everyone in your group including burritos, pizza and classic mexican beach food. Every saturday the beach club features world renowned electronic music djs making it the perfect place to continue your party. With a $60 minimum charge per person, Casa Maraika is not one of our more inexpensive stops, but is a must visit hidden gem on Playa de Los Caballos Beach.

Your Guide to Yelapa, Mexico

Pin this post for later!

Yelapa is tucked between lush, green mountains and next to the serene, azure waters of Mexico’s Pacific coast.

This quaint village, accessible only by boat, is for those seeking beauty unspoiled by the clamor of crowded resorts.

There’s a stunning beach, cool waterfalls, the freshest seafood tacos, and an infinite supply of margaritas… You might never want to leave!

I loved this adorable town, and if you’re thinking of checking it out, I have everything you need to know.

How to Get to Yelapa From Puerto Vallarta

Wandering yelapa town, other beaches in yelapa:, cascada de yelapa, yelapa waterfall #2, horse back riding and atvs, where to eat in yelapa:, how to get around yelapa, do you day trip to yelapa or stay, quick faq for yelapa, mexico:.

I’ll keep this short and sweet since I already have a whole guide on how to get to Yelapa from Puerto Vallarta .

Your two best options are either:

  • Take a yacht tour : Grab a tour out here, it will be the easiest, and the prices are very reasonable. They will include a great time without you having to lift a finger in the planning process! You’ll get enough time to explore Yelapa, Yelapa Waterfall and chill on the beach. It’s a perfect day trip out here on a YACHT!!
  • Take a boat : You can head to Los Muertos Pier and buy a one-way or round-trip boat ride to Yelapa. This will be the cheapest, but you’ll be in a regular, slightly crowded boat where you might get wet. Nothing fancy or that comfortable here.

Water taxi carrying passengers amongst the mountains in Yelapa.

The two main piers in Yelapa are the town’s pier and the hotel pier. During my visit, the town’s pier did not look like it was actually being used, so FYI on that. Your boat captain will tell you where to meet to get picked up so don’t worry.

Well, this has got to be one of the darn cutest towns in Mexico. And I lived in Sayulita for a bit. I didn’t think towns got much cuter.

Yelapa takes it to another level with charming streets, cool murals, and even a tiled staircase paired with roaming adorable dogs… Did I make it to heaven or…!?

Nina smiling while stroking a dog in the streets of Yelapa while posing in front of stairs with a heart shaped pattern.

You’ll fall in love with the charm of Yelapa just wandering the streets, which won’t take long since this place is so small.

There’s one small road that runs through the town, but there are plenty of mini side streets to detour off of.

Yelapa Beach

There’s really one main beach, Yelapa Beach. You’ll find tons of cute little bungalows flinging margaritas and food out to the visitors on the lounge chairs.

The beach is a beautiful yellow sand beach, and the ocean is a perfect temperature and blue as can be! As your backdrop? How do lush green hills sound?

A full view over Yelapa Beach the blue ocean water and a tree covered hill while boats come and go.

You can easily spend the day here; it’s a lovely beach!

While there are many places to beach bum, if you want a chair with an umbrella, you must order something from one of the restaurants.

Unfortunately, some of the restaurants don’t have the best reviews, but we found Sirena Morena Yelapa to be the better of the bunch. Of course, you’re welcome to pop down on your own towel anywhere for free.

A man swimming in the ocean at an empty Yelapa Beach with a view of hotels in the distance.

  • Main Town – There’s a patch of sand here but it’s not much of a beach; it’s not great, I wouldn’t recommend coming here.
  • Playa Isabel – This spot is a nice little cove that almost nobody goes to since you have to walk a bit to get here. You’ll find cute rocky outcrops with a small slice of sand to chill on.

A view over Playa Isabel with a donkey on the beach, forest to the side and a paraglider in the air in the distance.

Yelapa Waterfalls

You may have heard there’s a waterfall here in Yelapa, and it’s true, there are actually TWO!

The one you’re likely thinking about is the one closest to town. You’ll pass a few cute shops along the pathway to get here, and you’ll maybe have to step over some horse poop too.

Yelapa Waterfall is less than a mile round trip from the center of town and is best visited in winter and spring because it can get quite dry afterward.

A long exposure of Yelapa Waterfall falling down over smooth black rocks to the plunge pool.

It’s a stunning waterfall that tumbles from about 100 feet up off a rocky cliff’s edge and into a big pool. Here, you can take a dip, which is nice after roasting all day at the beach.

The second waterfall in Yelapa is quite a ways longer. It’s about 5 miles round trip, and you’ll be hiking through a river at some points, with a last-minute rock scramble towards the end.

From July to September, you may not be able to reach these falls because the river’s water level will be too high due to the rain.

A long exposure of Yelapa Waterfall 2 in between rocks on a sunny day.

Restaurant Manguito’s is along the river at the start of the trail, so you might want to pop in for a quick drink and ask them for some advice so you don’t waste your time heading in only to have to turn around.

READ MORE: Yelapa Waterfalls: There Are TWO!

Yelapa is a beautiful slice of serene Mexican paradise. You’ll see it as soon as you get here!

However, there will be a few moments of momentary disruption… Usually in the form of horses coming through and leaving poop and ATVs zipping by.

A group of tourists horse back riding down a road in Yelapa.

No offense if this is your thing; it’s not mine, but I can’t help but mention it. Exploring Yelapa by ATV or horseback riding is popular.

You can grab this tour here , which takes you to Yelapa and includes a horseback riding trip.

  • Jay’s Cafe : We stopped here first to get some coffee to fuel up for the day (our first coffee didn’t count after that boat ride).
  • Tacos Los Abuelos : Eat all the seafood tacos here!
  • Restaurante Pollo Bollo : I don’t eat meat but a friend who ate here said the chicken was really good and ended up eating here a ton.
  • Cafe Eclipse : Fresh juice, some of the best guac I’ve ever had in Mexico, and some cute dogs. They are just a few steps from the mosaic-tiled staircase.
  • Yelapa Yacht Club : Sounds fancy but it’s not. Live music, views of the beach, good margaritas… Do you need anything else?!

Garrett smiling with a camera hanging off his shoulder holding out a cup of coffee besides the Jay's Cafe sign and menu.

By foot, baby! This is a small town, and there are few to no cars. As we mentioned, you could take an ATV tour or a horseback riding tour, but otherwise, you’ll be walking around.

An elderly tourist being driven around on an ATV in Yelapa.

Ensure you wear comfortable footwear and not just a pair of foam flip-flops.

Something worth noting, particularly because it’s likely you’ll be getting dropped off at the hotel pier , is that you have to walk a bit to get to the town.

If you’re just looking for a day at the beach, you’ll be golden; the boat will get you right there.

Lots of small boats anchored in a bay near Yelapa Beach with beach villas built into the forests on the mountain.

But if you want to go to town or the main Yelapa Waterfall, you’ll have to walk along the beach, past the beach cabanas, over the Yelapa Bridge, up a bit of a hill, and down into town.

If you peep a map, you’ll notice Yelapa Beach and the town are separated by a river. It’s about a 30-minute walk from the beach to the town. Depending on water levels you might be able to walk across the river.

I had to walk over the bridge when I visited in November.

A map of Yelapa town and things to do.

This is a tough one to answer; it will entirely depend on how much time you’re going to be in Mexico and what you’re looking for.

If you’re looking for a quiet getaway where you want to forget everything for a while, particularly after 3 pm when all the visitors who aren’t staying in Yelapa leave, then maybe shacking up for a couple of nights is a good idea!

Nina crossing a long, wooden suspension bridge over a brown river heading towards the forests of Yelapa.

If you’re low on time, are doing tons of other things to do in Puerto Vallarta, and just want to pop in and get a feel for Yelapa, then just come for the day. In reality, you can definitely see Yelapa in a day.

You won’t get to relax too much if you’re trying to see the waterfall, walk around, eat, etc… You won’t have too much time to “feel” Yelapa, but you will see Yelapa.

An antique looking payphone with a sign saying that it's the "first telephone in Yelapa"... and a parrot.

👉 Accommodation in Yelapa

Absolutely. It’s a great stop to escape the bustle, with a stunning beach and a waterfall.

Yes, the beach and the waterfalls are both swimmable.

It’s a one-hour boat from the Low Muertos Pier in Puerto Vallarta to Yelapa. If you’re here on a tour, they might make a few other stops along the way.

Nope. You won’t find many cars here either. The only way to get to Yelapa is by boat. (Technically, there is a road to Yelapa, but you won’t be using it!)

Yelapa Waterfall is less than a mile round trip walk from town. The further waterfall is a five-mile round-trip hike.

Come by boat for the day or take an epic yacht boat tour .

I hope this helped you plan your trip to Yelapa!

Wondering how to visit Yelapa from Puerto Vallarta? Let me help you! I’ve been living in Puerto Vallarta for three years, and visiting Yelapa is one of my favorite things to do! I’ve been on many day trips to Yelapa, as well as long weekend stays.

If you’re looking for an escape from the city, Yelapa is the perfect place to go. It’s got beautiful hiking trails that lead to secluded waterfalls, unique accommodation options that immerse you in nature, and a gorgeous beachfront to soak in the Pacific Coast sunsets.

The overall vibe in Yelapa is wonderful; some say it’s Mexico’s last authentic beach town.

This guide has everything you need to know about getting to Yelapa from Puerto Vallarta, places to stay, and what to do in Yelapa once you’re there.

A group of enthusiastic tourists, clad in colorful life jackets, are joyfully paddling their kayaks against the backdrop of the turquoise waters of Yelapa Beach, creating a vibrant and energetic scene of exploration and adventure.

Don’t have time to read this guide? This all-inclusive mega yacht tour is the most fun way to visit Yelapa from Puerto Vallarta.

Table of Contents

How to get to Yelapa Mexico

Yelapa is commonly mistaken as an island, but it’s actually connected to the mainland.

There aren’t any roads to Yelapa, so the only way to get from Puerto Vallarta to Yelapa is by tour, water taxi, (long) hike, or dirt bike (my friend rode his). But most people opt for a tour or water taxi!

Yelapa Tours from Puerto Vallarta

The easiest way to go on a Yelapa day trip from Puerto Vallarta is on one of these Yelapa tours .

Yacht to Yelapa from Puerto Vallarta

⭐️  RATING:  5/5 Stars (700+ reviews) | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:   6 hours | ✅  Book it!

A great way to visit Yelapa is on this all-inclusive mega yacht. It’s one of the best catamaran tours in Puerto Vallarta!

This experience was the best part of our trip! The yacht was nice, the drinks kept coming and the service was impeccable – Erika (read more reviews)

You’ll go sailing through the Bay of Banderas, stopping at Playa Las Animas and Yelapa, where you’ll get the chance to swim in the Yelapa waterfalls and snorkeling in the turquoise water. While cruising, you’ll enjoy drinks from a premium open bar!

Majahuitas and Yelapa Tour

Majahuitas Beach Club welcomes visitors with its pristine white sand, swaying palm trees, and a tranquil atmosphere,

⭐️  RATING:  4.5/5 Stars (500+ reviews) | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:  7 hours | ✅  Book it!

Another great option is this tour that takes you to both Majahuitas and Yelapa.

The first stop is at Yelapa, where you’ll have time to hike to the waterfall or relax on the beach.

In the afternoon, you’ll relax at Majahuitas Beah Club, where you’ll enjoy lunch and unlimited non-alcoholic beverages.

Surpassed expectations. The service was above and beyond. Everyone came around to make sure you had a drink when you wanted one and they were very punctual with all activities. – Elia (read more reviews)

Yelapa Water Taxi

A water taxi to yelapa from puerto vallarta , maneuvering gracefully through the ocean waves

There are public water taxis if you want to go on a day trip to Yelapa from Puerto Vallarta without a tour.

You can get a water taxi from Puerto Vallarta to Yelapa from Los Muertos Pier or from Boca Del Tomatlan. You can see the schedule here and book a ferry online here.

Bocas Del Tomatlan is a small town outside Puerto Vallarta, which you can reach by bus from Zona Romantica or a taxi/Uber.

The water taxis to Yelapa run more regularly from Boca Del Tomatlan, and the ride is shorter than from Los Muertos. The water taxi from Boca takes about 30 minutes.

Against the backdrop of the picturesque Boca region, a fleet of traditional fishing boats rests peacefully in the water

There are some Puerto Vallarta to Yelapa water taxis that leave from Los Muertos Pier, but they run less frequently and are longer and more expensive (380 pesos round trip).

If you’re only visiting Yelapa for a day, make sure you get the last public boat back from Yelapa to Puerto Vallarta, which usually leaves around 5 (confirm with the water taxis when you get off). Otherwise, you will have to pay for a private Yelapa water taxi which is much more expensive.

We had to hire a private boat to take us back from Yelapa to Puerto Vallarta as we missed the last public water taxi, which we paid 220 USD for (and that was in 2021). It was a costly mistake, but having a private boat while the sun set over the city was an amazing ride!

It’s a nice boat ride, going along the edges of the southern part of Banderas Bay. It passes small beaches along the way, sometimes stopping to pick up other passengers.

Book a water taxi to Yelapa here !

Yelapa Puerto Vallarta hotels

You won’t find any 5-star resorts or big brand names in Yelapa, which is all part of the charm. Here are some suggestions on where to stay in Yelapa!

This one-bedroom holiday home is one of the more luxurious options, with gorgeous floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the sea, a flat-screen TV, a dining area, a fully equipped kitchen, and an outdoor patio.

Casa Visit Magica offers beautiful ocean-view apartments with hammocks to enjoy the breeze, comfortable bedrooms, and fantastic reviews.

We stayed at this Los Naranjos, which was an experience in itself. It’s about a 15-minute uphill walk from the beach, or you can take ATVs up there.

It’s set in a beautiful jungle setting, but the accommodation is rustic. The rooms don’t have walls, so it truly felt like we were living in the jungle. However, they do provide mosquito nets, and there are clean bathrooms with running water.

Nestled amidst the lush greenery of Yelapa, a rustic treehouse stands as a unique and charming accommodation option, where guests can embrace the tranquility of nature, savor the sweeping views of the verdant jungle, and experience the magical blend of comfort and rustic charm.

Things to do in Yelapa

Yelapa is just a small fishing village, so don’t expect the same amount of activities you’ll find in Puerto Vallarta. Instead, immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Yelapa and reconnect with nature.

Yelapa Waterfall Puerto Vallarta

In the company of good friends, laughter fills the air as they gather by the captivating Yelapa waterfall, their carefree spirits blending harmoniously with the soothing sounds of cascading water

Yelapa is home to some of the best waterfalls near Puerto Vallarta.

There are a couple of Yelapa waterfalls that you can hike to. One is just 20 minutes from the pier, and you can easily walk to it by following the signs from Yelapa town.

If you get confused, ask any locals in town “cascada” which means waterfall, and they will point you in the right direction.

Yelapa town, with its colorful houses and beach and a sign pointing to the waterfall

I visited this waterfall at the end of May during the dry season, and it was pretty underwhelming as there wasn’t really any water, but I still enjoyed walking through the town and checking out the gorgeous street art.

Lora strikes a pose against a vibrant art mural in Yelapa,

There is a larger waterfall that takes about an hour to reach, which I recently had the chance to visit. It’s a beautiful spot to go swimming!

Lora's radiant smile reflects her pure joy and appreciation as she stands amidst the beauty of Yelapa, with the awe-inspiring waterfall gently blurred in the background

On my first trip to Yelapa, our group decided to go to an even further waterfall which was quite the adventure. It took us about 4 hours to get there with over nine river crossings, so I wouldn’t do this without a guide (we hired one from Los Naranjos).

While the hike was long, the falls were so wonderful to swim in once we got there. There was no one else around, and we were surrounded by a pristine jungle with macaws flying above.

lora in yelapa waterfalls

We climbed up even further to the top of the waterfall, where there were beautiful small pools to swim in.

It took us even longer to get back due to a few wrong turns, so this was a 12-hour adventure!

Yelapa beach Puerto Vallarta

the sun gracefully dips below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the sandy shores of Yelapa's beach, with the tranquil waves gently lapping against the shore,

Yelapa feels like a secluded island, so one of the best things to do here is simply enjoying the Yelapa beach and unforgettable sunsets over the ocean.

There’s also a man who walks around with a giant iguana you can take photos with.

an iguana basks lazily under the warm rays of the Yelapa sun on the beach

Massages are also available on the beach, which is the perfect way to relax.

Yelapa Water activities

During the whale watching season (December to March), you can go whale watching from Yelapa, with great chances of spotting magnificent humpback whales.

The ocean is right there, so it’s a great place to go for a swim or kayak/paddleboard.

If you’re feeling like more adventure, you can also go paragliding in Yelapa for a birds-eye view over the ocean.

the idyllic Yelapa beach, with its pristine shores, photo framed by towering palm trees

With such beautiful water around the beach, Yelapa is also one of the best places to go snorkeling around Puerto Vallarta.

Yelapa Restaurants

There are a few restaurants on the beach where you can order food to enjoy. One unique thing about Yelapa is that the only businesses in town are locally run – you won’t find any chain restaurants here!

The seafood quality is fantastic as the restaurants buy it directly from the fisherman.

We ate at Yelapa Yacht Club after our hike, and the food was terrific. They also had some great live music.

Yelapa is famous for its beach pies, which local vendors sell along the beach for just a couple of dollars in the afternoon.

Yelapa Town

Perched gracefully on a vibrant set of stairs, Lora embraces the lively spirit of Yelapa

Yelapa is home to charming winding streets decorated with colorful flags and graffiti.

Take time to wander around, pet the friendly dogs, talk to the locals, and support the local shops.

There’s a cultural museum in Yelapa you can visit for only 50 pesos to learn more about the history of this town.
