DESCRIPTION

1999 was the year Hatteras molded the modified-V hull running surface with deep tunnels to accommodate big 6-blade propellers revolving on low gear ratios—minimizing vibration, that give the Hatteras a long-range cruising speed in the mid-30 knots and a top speed of about 40 knots. This innovation gave Hatteras strong running gear advantages. Prop tunnels reduce shaft angle and draft. Prop thrust is more horizontal, effectively optimizing on-plane running attitude to 3-4 degrees on a straightway, in concert with the huge (16” x 27”) counter balanced bronze rudders and a Hynautic steering system capable of making tight turns with ease. Performance is also enhanced by Hatteras engineering found in the details such as the rudder installation which utilizes 2.5” bronze rudder stocks that are integrally cast with the rudders. Dripless stuffing boxes, thrust bearings and lock collars are all bronze as well. Adding to the responsiveness at helm, is the way the tiller arms are bolted to the top of rudder stocks and the Hynautic hydraulic rams at other end, securing the rudders and eliminating binding. Hatteras machines the 3” diameter stainless steel propeller shafts in-house and proprietary dripless shaft logs are in manganese bronze housings instead of plastic to prevent any chance of meltdown. Hatteras construction advantages include the use of 2” Divinycell coring in the hull above the waterline, decks, and deckhouse, that is sandwiched between 2 layers of fiberglass giving it lightweight strength similar to an I-beam. This eliminates the need for cluttering overhead support beams and unsightly sound insulation material in the engine room. Batteries are enclosed in molded fiberglass vented boxes with removeable tops. Exterior doors (ex: salon door) and hatches are solid and fit flush. Wide beam, low center of gravity, and heavy solid fiberglass bottom add to the Hatteras stability at anchor or at sea. The open flybridge (may be enclosed) features the typical convertible center console helm with two helm chairs and hardtop. Tower, outriggers, and other special equipment are owner upgrades. The cushioned bench seat on console front and on the starboard side have removeable cushions to access the storage underneath. Storage cabinet is in forward bulkhead. Helm features Palm Beach-style single-lever engine controls for easier docking and backing down on fish and silky-smooth ride. Helm has excellent all-around visibility. Rocket launcher rod holders are mounted on aft flybridge railing.

A removeable, macerator-equipped solid fiberglass fishbox is in the 135 sq ft cockpit sole. Cockpit fish-fighting essentials include bait freezer, oversized transom door, fresh and raw water washdowns and more. Most Hatteras tournament boats are custom outfitted to the owners’ requirements. Cockpit has plenty of room to add a fish fighting chair and Hatteras has a built-in backing plate for that purpose. Interior cabin is traditional convertible layout of 3 staterooms and 2 heads with salon and full, peninsula galley on same level. Four under-counter refrigerator/freezer drawers are built into the peninsula.

The galley has plenty of storage cabinets and drawers, sink, 2-burner cooktop, convection microwave oven.

Most are customized by owners. Dinette is opposite galley. Washer and dryer are in companionway closet. Master stateroom is midships with ensuite head. VIP guest stateroom is forward in peak. Both feature a queen island berth. An optional 2-stateroom layout positions the galley at mid-level and expands the salon for greater entertainment area. The superb Hatteras joinery and woodwork is evident throughout with design details that add to the look and feel of luxury yacht-like quality making the 50 Convertible a pleasure to cruise and fish with well-balanced cockpit and interior space.

The Hatters 50 Convertible is 50’10” LOA including bow pulpit, with 16’11” beam and 5’4” draft. Weight is 60,000 lbs. Fuel capacity is 890 gallons, increased to 1060 gallons in 2001; water capacity is 184 gallons and wastewater is 85 gallons. Hull is modified-V with 8-degree deadrise.
