First look: Oceanis Yacht 60 – new bluewater flagship

The new Oceanis Yacht 60 from Beneteau is a stylish and bluewater friendly new flagship model for the French yard

Beneteau’s new flagship, the Oceanis Yacht 60, is the yard’s third model to come out of the collaboration with Lorenzo Argento and Roberto Biscontini that started with the First Yacht 53 three years ago. Their brief for the company’s third generation yacht of this size was to create a sturdy and stylish bluewater friendly vessel with a very high standard of interior finish, including plenty of solid wood joinery.

“They have given us a new way of working and a new perspective,” Beneteau’s Valentin Moreau tells me, “so this boat is very different to the smaller models in the Oceanis range and to the Oceanis Yacht 62 it replaces.”

The design philosophy follows on from that of the First Yachts 53 and the Oceanis Yachts 54, which share the same hull design. The new Oceanis Yacht 60 has proportionately slightly fuller forward sections shape, but it’s by no means extreme in that respect. As with the smaller models, whose hull was originally developed as a performance cruiser, Biscontini opted for a transom with lots of flare and low waterline beam, rather than wide stern sections with marked chines. At the same time, there is more rocker in the aft sections below the waterline.

The combined effect is to reduce wetted surface area to an extent that will markedly boost light airs performance, at the expense of a very small loss of speed when power reaching or in marginal surfing conditions.

Exterior styling is very similar to the Oceanis Yacht 54, including the standard mainsheet arch, low freeboard, low profile coach roof and a hint of reverse sheer. Yet, although hull length is 70cm less than the old 62-footer, overall interior volume remains the same and there’s more space in the owner’s suite. This was achieved in part through abandoning a completely level cabin sole throughout the boat, which wastes a lot of volume below the floor. Instead, there’s a modest step down from the saloon to the forward galley and to the aft cabins, which therefore retain good headroom despite the reduced freeboard.

These changes helped save a whopping five tonnes of weight, yet the sail area remains very similar to that of the previous model. Together with the reduced wetted service area this will transform the sailing experience.

Near level walk around deck layouts have become de rigour for many of today’s new yachts. In this case there are only two 7cm high steps between the transom and the bow, one alongside the guest cockpit and the other near the mast.

However the need for any deck work is kept to a minimum thanks to fitting Harken’s Unwind winching system as standard. This uses electric winches to both wind in and to ease a line, which means the trim of mainsail and jib can be completely controlled from the consoles at each helm station.

Much thought has gone into the ergonomics of these, with a conscious effort to ensure drivers feel protected. The steering positions are therefore inboard of a substantial coaming and benefit from large helm seats with high backrests. The 1.1 m diameter of the wheels are larger than average, but it’s still possible to reach the two pairs of coaming mounted electric winches if necessary.

Argento has also stamped his clean minimalist style on the interior, where attention to detail includes concealed lighting and switches. The saloon is full width, with lots of overhead hatches for natural light and ventilation. A big L-shaped navigation centre, with a leather designer swivelling chair, is clearly aimed at those who work from home while on board. This will be Beneteau’s first model with a full width forward galley. It offers plenty of space and was designed to maximise both stowage volumes and worktop space.

The forward owners cabin occupies a third of the length of the interior, with privacy and soundproofing prioritised. The en suite is therefore at the back of this area, against the main bulkhead, while the bed faces forward, which means it can’t be seen when the door to the galley/saloon is open. It’s a novel layout, but has obvious appeal and also provides more stowage space than conventional arrangements.

This model boat also comes with Beneteau’s Ship Control system, which has been rolled out across all models, as standard. This allows all aspects of the boat to be managed from an app or MFDs when on board, and also from home thanks to the on-board mobile data connection. It’s also available for retrofitting to existing craft.

The first Oceanis 60 is scheduled to be launched in Les Sables d’Olonne in July this year, in advance of a public launch at the Cannes boat show in September. Pricing won’t be released until then.

Oceanis Yacht 60: Beneteau unveils its new flagship

It is “ the attention to every detail and the extraordinary result of it all” that makes a sailing boat a true yacht. So says Damien Jacob , Director of the Beneteau Group’s Sailing division, as he presents the boatyard’s new flagship sailing yacht, the Oceanis Yacht 60.

Elegance and sophistication come through in this ocean-going vessel, designed to be a houseboat. With a length of 18 meters, the new addition features a sleek silhouette and a slightly upturned bow, angled just enough to ensure less water resistance and smoother sailing.

Like her younger sister, the deckhouse of the Oceanis Yacht 60 is low and unobstructed, and the two perfectly complementary and complete helm stations enjoy an open view of both the boat and the sea. This solution also facilitates sail trimming.

The same concept also applies to the tables and sun loungers in front of the helm stations, with L-shaped seating to starboard and port; in the centre between them is an easy walkway leading below deck.

Circulation on deck is excellent thanks to the side walkways that seamlessly connect the stern, helm station and bow. These are all features that allow easy handling even with a smaller crew.

A functional innovation is the bimini , supported by the mainsail arch, which is available in a rigid version as option. The bimini delineates the area clearly, keeps the ropes out and, thanks to the handrails, is also functional for safe movement.

The awning is adjustable, which guarantees air passage and shelter from the sun as required. The stern area is just as functional, the bathing platform is large and reveals the garage, which accommodates a t ender up to 2.8 metres. Thanks to the installed roller system of the garage, launching and hauling the tender will be very easy, guaranteeing active stops and fun.

Beneteau Oceanis Yachts 60 – Interior

The interiors of this yacht are airy and bright, the generous spaces include a layout with a full beam galley amidships; to starboard there are an oven and dishwasher, while to port there is a fridge and pantry. The work spaces and other storage areas are also remarkable.

The saloon on the port side has a U-shaped sofa for 6 people that embraces the table, tactically lit by the window above the sofa backrests.

The shipyard offers the Oceanis Yacht 60 with 3 cabins and 3 heads and two optional finishes: light oak or dark oak. In the full-beam master cabin, the bed is placed on the starboard side with the head aft, natural light floods the room and the view of the sea is guaranteed by the side windows. There is also plenty of storage space for belongings.

The other two twin cabins are located aft. The shipyard’s distinctive cabinetry reveals a special attention to finishes: the woodwork blends perfectly with the white lacquers and upholstery. On-board systems are entrusted to Ship Control and Seanapps which facilitate control, management and monitoring of the yacht.

The Oceanis Yacht 60 is a 60-footer that feels like 62, a magic of space, a perceived and unabashed luxury in full Beneteau style, which we will be able to better appreciate live at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2022.

The New Oceanis Yacht 60 flagship – Elegance redefined

What makes a sailing vessel a yacht? “ The attention paid to each detail and the remarkable result of it all ” says Damien Jacob, Sailboat Product Director with Groupe Beneteau.

So the designers of the Oceanis Yacht 54 , Roberto Biscontini and Lorenzo Argento, made no concessions when drawing the new Oceanis flagship . This beautiful ocean-cruising yacht immerses us in a world of elegance and sophistication.

The yet timelessly elegant 18-meter hull profile of the  Oceanis Yacht 60   definitely echoes that of its 54-foot sister. A subtle interplay of proportions and a gentle reverse sheer create the kind of space you typically find on a 62-footer, while retaining an elegant design and excellent sea-keeping abilities. These unique features result in a true bluewater yacht that offers outstanding performance yet is easy to short-hand.

Optimum Design for Smooth Sailing

The huge cockpit offers safe, free-flowing movement throughout. Wide side-decks run round the helm stations and offer obstacle-free circulation to the fore deck. This unique layout reinvents the central cockpit concept. 

Although the two identical tables and sun bathing areas are standard on Oceanis Yachts , special attention has been paid to the helm consoles. With two real helm stations, controlling the boat’s course is as easy as trimming the sails, windward or leeward. The owner can carry out all the usual manoeuvres without leaving the helm, which is a definite plus on a big boat when sailing short-handed.

An innovative bimini is supported by the mainsail arch, keeping sheets safe and out of the way, and comes in an optional rigid version. Maintained by two lateral supports, the central section slides forward to adjust the amount of cover in the cockpit. Depending on the weather and the time of day, the crew will always find the best compromise between protection and air flow.

And since cruising goes hand in hand with anchorages the large bathing platform provides access to the tender garage, a must for a boat this size, capable of housing a 2.8 m jet-propelled tender. A system with double wires and guiding rollers makes for effortless launching and retrieval, promising active stopovers and lots of fun.

Lastly, onboard systems such as “ Ship Control ” and “ Seanapps ” respectively manage all the boat’s systems and make for effortless maintenance and monitoring, so that you can relax while you are cruising – and when you’re not. 

Stylish Interior Space for Sharing in Good Company

You are met with a great deal of space and light as you go down the companionway, and an overall impression of volume and balanced proportions. The   Oceanis Yacht 60 ’s galley is now positioned midship, where you are less likely to be bothered by movement, and it is full beam, with storage and a fridge to port, and a sink, oven and dishwasher to starboard. There is substantial storage space and worktop surfaces are ample. 

The salon layout provides a variety of spaces to enjoy social life onboard; six people can sit comfortably around the table which faces a lounge area with a soft sofa, ideal for relaxing at sea or at anchor. The curved chart table allows the skipper to swivel round and take part in conversations on board! 

Available in a 3-cabin version with 3 heads , the  Oceanis Yacht 60   comes with two different finishes: walnut as standard and light oak as an option. The craftsmen at BENETEAU, true to their long cabinetmaking tradition, devoted particular attention to the woodwork. Many moulded wood features blend harmoniously with large lacquered white surfaces and are matched with exclusive upholstery. Together they create a distinctly stylish atmosphere.

The most demanding owners will definitely love the master cabin. The ensuite head, the space opens out onto a starboard bed, lined with extensive storage spaces. This guarantees privacy and at the same time offers a stunning view of the sea. The linings have been chosen carefully to create a feeling of hull depth in association with the portholes. The stretched fabric hugs the curved shapes of the coachroof and the hull to create perfect visual continuity inside this wonderfully relaxing luxurious space.
