ALERIA (formerly MANIC MOMENT, KESTREL, PAPAGAYO) is a classic Holman & Pye designed cutter-rigged ketch, built in 1976 in the United Kingdom for delivery to the US. She is the sistership to Roger Swanson’s CLOUD NINE, which was one of the first yachts to successfully traverse the NW Passage. She was featured in Cruising World (Quite the Ketch, May 2007: https://www.cruisingworld.com/sailboats/bowman-57-quite-ketch), on coastalboating.net, Bowman 57 Facebook page and on the covers of publications.

ALERIA is a very comfortable and fast cruiser for crossing oceans, coastal cruising and/or living aboard. Her classic lines and tumble-home hull never cease to draw other sailors to ask about her. Her balanced sail plan provides many options for maximizing speed and comfort while underway.

Recently she has received new standing rigging, as well as a thorough going over with many minor upgrades to make her ready for her next adventure.

She has been given “classics status” by Jauge Classique Handicap, JCH.

But it's with very mixed emotions that we're selling our classic sailboat to upgrade to something bigger for our growing family.

A recent survey conducted in December 2022 found only one major issue - her exhaust system was outdated and corroded, so in January 2023 we had it completely replaced.

She's ready to live aboard and/or take you anywhere in the world.

Bowman, now Rustler Yachts, is one of the highest quality yacht builders in the world.

The Bowman 36, once named "The Bentley of the Sea" is representative of the highest standards of custom yacht construction.

The term 'Bluewater' gets thrown around for just about anything that floats these days, but 'Cloud' is an ACTUAL blue water cruiser designed to cross oceans in safety and comfort.

In fact, the Bowman 36 is one of the few boats approved for the Golden Globe Race for circumnavigation. Couple that with drop dead gorgeous lines and tons of modern upgrades including an interior refit to make her more viable as a liveaboard, 'Cloud' truly has it all.

Every boat is a compromise, but she’s as close as you’ll find to the perfect balance in solid offshore performance yet still comfortable in the slip or at anchor.

In 2019 an interior refit was performed by the legendary Bayliss Boatworks where an interior cabin housing 2 pilot berths was rebuilt into a comfortable dinette which also converts into a berth.

The Bowman 36 was designed by Holman and Pye, a British naval architecture firm that also created the legendary Oyster yachts. The Bowman 36 was first launched in 1974 and was produced until 1988, with about 60 boats built.

Four Ukrainian assault boats ‘destroyed’ in Kherson: Russian report

Russian troops have destroyed four Ukrainian assault boats on the Dnipro River in the Kherson region during an overnight attack, the state news agency TASS quoted Governor Vladimir Saldo as saying.

“Over the past 24 hours, Dnepr Battlegroup units destroyed enemy watercraft on the Dnipro River at night. Specifically, they uncovered and eliminated four enemy boats with an assault force of up to 15 militants from the 35th and 37th marine infantry brigades,” Saldo wrote on Telegram.

He added that Russia’s Dnepr Battlegroup hit Ukraine’s 141st, 65th and 128th brigades and struck temporary deployment sites, military hardware and artillery positions of the Ukrainian army on the right bank of the Dnipro River.

He said soldiers had also successfully fought against reconnaissance and attack drones.

“The enemy’s total manpower losses over the past 24 hours amounted to 45 militants, and two military vehicles were destroyed,” Saldo said.

Russia says it hit a warehouse containing Ukrainian weapons

Russia’s military hit a warehouse with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of the 113th Ukrainian Defense Brigade and destroyed the launcher of an American MIM-23 HAWK anti-aircraft missile system (SAM), the state-run TASS news agency cited the Russian Ministry of Defence as saying.

“Operational-tactical aviation, missile forces and artillery of groupings of troops of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation destroyed a launcher of the MIM-23 HAWK anti-aircraft missile system made in the United States,” the ministry said.

The ministry added that forces hit a warehouse containing Ukraine’s forces’ manpower and military equipment.

War, fear of war spur global military spending to new record: SIPRI report

The world spent $2.4 trillion on military forces last year, the highest amount ever recorded by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

SIPRI has been monitoring military expenditures since 1949 and found in its annual report released on Monday that in 2023 they rose to 2.3 percent of the global gross domestic product (GDP) from 2.2 percent the year before.

It meant that every man, woman and child on the planet was taxed an average of $306 for military spending last year – the highest rate since the Cold War.

The increased spending exactly matched the global rate of inflation of 6.8 percent, so it doesn’t necessarily translate into greater military efficacy everywhere.

But as SIPRI said, spending was not evenly spread out because “world military expenditure is highly concentrated among a very small group of states”.

No fencers from Russia, Belarus to participate in Games, says Federation

The European Fencing Confederation says no fencers from Russia or Belarus will participate in the Paris Olympics after those eligible under a neutral banner did not enter for European qualifiers.

“There are unfortunately no Russian or Belarusian athletes,” EFC president Giorgio Scarso told reporters.

“The date for enrollment has passed. The reason for their absence is not known, there was no official declaration of letter to explain it.”

The International Olympic Committee offered Russians the chance to compete in Paris as neutral athletes as long as they did not publicly support the war and were not employed by the military or security services.

Earlier this week, Russian fencing federation head Ilgar Mamedov told Sports.ru, “No Russian fencers will go to these Olympic Games”.

“We have made our principled position clear: we are not going to divide our team into those who please the West and those who, in their opinion, are ‘bad Russians’.”

Russia’s Gazprom says work underway to connect eastern, western gas grids

Kremlin-controlled energy giant Gazprom GAZP.MM says work is under way on further links between its east and western pipeline networks after it launched construction of an 800km (500-mile) pipeline in Russia’s far east last month.

The Belogorsk-Khabarovsk pipeline is designed to connect the China-bound Power of Siberia with the existing Sakhalin-Khabarovsk-Vladivostok link.

Due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Russian gas flows to Europe have dropped sharply. Russia is redirecting gas flows and seeking to forge closer ties with Asia, particularly with the world’s number two energy consumer, China.

Moscow is also seeking to boost pipeline gas exports to China through the construction of the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline. The pipeline is designed to carry 50 billion cubic metres (bcm) of natural gas a year from the Yamal region in northern Russia to China via Mongolia.

Almost as much as the now idle Nord Stream 1 pipeline to Europe under the Baltic Sea that was damaged by blasts in 2022.

US preparing $1bn weapons package for Ukraine: Report

The US is preparing a $1bn military aid package for Ukraine, the first to be sourced from the yet-to-be-passed foreign aid bill, two US officials tell the Reuters news agency.

The US Senate is set to vote on a major aid package that includes $61bn for Ukraine. Its passage is all but certain after the House of Representatives approved the assistance at the weekend with broad bipartisan support.

The aid package includes vehicles, Stinger air defence munitions, additional ammunition for high-mobility artillery rocket systems, 155mm artillery ammunition, TOW and Javelin anti-tank munitions, and other weapons that can immediately be used on the battlefield, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Moscow court rejects appeal to end pre-trial detention of jailed US reporter

A Moscow court has rejected an appeal by jailed Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich against extending his pre-trial detention until June 30.

“The First Court of Appeal ruled that the order of March 26, 2024, on the extension of the preventative measure should be left unchanged,” the judge said in the hearing, according to a journalist from the French news agency AFP who reported from the court.

Gershkovich, 32, became the first US journalist arrested on spying charges in Russia since the Cold War when he was detained by the Federal Security Service (FSB) on March 29 last year.

Russia’s summer offensive will focus on ‘unexpected’ areas, Ukrainian official says

“We are getting ready. Yes, the enemy will give us unpleasant surprises. It will operate in areas where we do not expect it. But it will not achieve its goal,” Oleksandr Pivnenko told the Ukrainian news outlet Liga.net.

Pivnenko added that while he foresaw “some difficulties” for Kyiv’s troops, Russian forces would not make decisive gains.

“Perhaps they may be able to meet 10 to 15 percent of their goals. But this will not be a strategic victory.”

Ukrainian officials said Moscow also wants to seize the strategically important eastern town of Chasiv Yar by May 9 when it marks Soviet Victory Day.

British PM to put defence system on ‘war footing’

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced 10 billion pounds ($12.43 bn) of extra long-term funding for munitions in light of the war in Ukraine.

“We will put the UK’s own defence industry on a war footing. One of the central lessons of the war in Ukraine is that we need deeper stockpiles of munitions and for industry to be able to replenish them more quickly,” Sunak said at a press conference in Poland alongside NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

Eleven Russians killed in Ukrainian attacks: Report

Eleven have been killed and 48 injured over the past week in Russian border regions due to Ukrainian attacks, the state news agency TASS cites the Russian Foreign Ministry as saying.

“Over the past week, 59 civilians became victims of Nazi [Ukrainian] shelling: 48 were injured, including a child, and 11 died,” Rodion Miroshnik, the ministry’s ambassador-at-large in charge of overseeing the “Kyiv regime’s crimes”.

He added that over the past week, Ukrainian forces fired “at least 1,278 rounds of ammunition” at civilian facilities in the border regions.

“Over the past week, Ukrainian forces have intensified drone strikes on civilian facilities along the entire line of engagement,” Miroshnik said. “In the past 24 hours alone, the Russian military suppressed 83 reconnaissance and strike drones over the Kherson region, downed 18 drones over the Belgorod region.”

Ukraine thanks Lithuania for military vehicles

Ukraine’s Defence Ministry says that Lithuania has delivered armored vehicles and “light attack aircraft”.

“Lithuania has handed over M577 armored personnel carriers to Ukraine. Also, Lithuania delivered a disassembled L-39ZA “Albatros” light attack aircraft,” the ministry said in a post on X.

“We are grateful to our Lithuanian friends for their unwavering support. The power of unity brings victory closer,” it added.

Russia cancels World War II procession in Moscow

Russia is cancelling a procession in Moscow to commemorate World War II victims for a second year due to growing security concerns, officials have announced.

“In connection with existing threats to public security, the central headquarters of the Immortal Regiment has decided not to hold the 2024 march in an in-person format,” said Yelena Tsunaeya, a ruling United Russia parliamentarian and organiser.

The decision comes after a surge in Ukrainian drone and missile attacks in regions on the countries’ shared border and several weeks after an attack on a concert hall outside Moscow that killed at least 144 people.

Separately, Ukraine has warned that Russian forces will try to capture the town of Chasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine before May 9, the day Russia marks the anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany.

Russia’s economy ministry sees 2024 GDP at 2.8 percent

Russia’s economy ministry has improved its expectations for 2024 gross domestic product (GDP) growth to 2.8 percent from 2.3 percent, while envisaging a weaker rouble and shrinking current account surplus in the years to come.

Russia’s economic rebound from a 2022 slump relies heavily on state-funded arms and ammunition production as Moscow continues its war in Ukraine, masking problems that are affecting Russians’ living standards.

Earlier this month, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) raised its 2024 forecast for Russia’s GDP growth to 3.2 percent from the 2.6 percent projected in January.

The IMF also cited strong government spending and investment related to the war, higher consumer spending in a tight labour market, and strong oil export revenues despite Western sanctions.

Speaking at a government meeting, Economy Minister Maxim Reshetnikov said the main factor behind economic growth was domestic consumer and investment demand.

‘I want to make up for mistakes’: The Russian POWs fighting for Ukraine

Vlad, a Russian soldier, was on a bus heading home from Ukraine for a prisoner swap last year when a tall, dark-haired man entered the vehicle.

The man said he was the commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps (RVC) and offered the passengers a chance to join his unit of Russians fighting in and for Ukraine against their homeland.

Vlad, 27, raised his hand. He was the only Russian hostage on the bus to do so, joining a group of fighters who had switched sides.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, an RVC spokesperson refused to say how many Russian soldiers have turned coats, but claimed that recruiting Russian prisoners of war (POWs) has boosted their ranks.

Officially created in August 2022 under the command of Ukraine’s military intelligence, RVC is one of the three all-Russian units fighting on Kyiv’s side.

Frozen Russian assets decline in value: Swiss minister

The Swiss economy minister says frozen Russian assets in Switzerland have fallen to 5.8 billion Swiss francs ($6.4bn).

The ministry said the figure for the assets held under sanctions on December 31, 2023, was 1.7 billion francs ($1.86bn) lower than the one reported at the end of 2022.

“The decrease is explained by a loss in value of certain blocked assets — particularly securities related to Russia –- as a result of international sanctions,” the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs said in a statement.

Some assets, however, gained 280 million francs ($307m) in value.

The Swiss authorities revised the value of the frozen assets after it received updated data from financial intermediaries.

The government said it froze an additional 580 million francs ($636m) in financial assets and blocked two more properties.

The statement said 140 million francs ($153m) had been released “after further investigations found the legal requirements for their freezing were not met”.

Ukraine’s farm minister named as suspect in corruption case: Report

Ukrainian media has reported that the country’s anticorruption agency is treating Agriculture Minister Mykola Solsky as a suspect in an investigation into the illegal acquisition of state-owned land worth about $7m.

The minister addressed the media reports, saying the allegations pertain to a period in 2017-2018 when he worked as a lawyer in a dispute between state-owned enterprises and individuals in a statement on the Telegram messaging app.

“I guarantee maximum openness to establish the truth, but there is no need for this – all data is open to law enforcement, and the evidence and arguments of the parties are being considered by the courts,” Solsky said.

Solsky has overseen the embattled grain industry during the war with Russia since his appointment in March 2022.

EU lawmakers back Ukraine food import extension, with curbs

The European Parliament has voted to back a year-long extension to tariff-free trade for Ukrainian farm produce while introducing new curbs on the level of imports to assuage protesting EU farmers.

The parliament voted 428 votes to 131, with 44 abstentions in favour of the extension, which will now apply from June 6 after clearing this final procedural hurdle.

FSB stops attack in Bryansk by Ukrainian nationalist supporter: Report

The Russian Intelligence Service (FSB) has stopped an attack by a supporter of Ukrainian nationalists in Bryansk, the state-run TASS news agency reported.

“The FSB detained a Russian citizen in Bryansk, professing Ukrainian nationalist ideology, who, on instructions from representatives of a terrorist organisation banned in our country, took part in the preparation of a sabotage and terrorist act,” the public relations centre of the FSB told TASS.

During a search, a homemade explosive device, which the man was planning to use, was seized by the FSB.

The investigative department of the FSB directorate for the Bryansk region also opened a criminal case against the man, which may lead to a prison term of up to 20 years.

Moscow to ‘increase intensity of attacks’ on Western weapons

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, addressing his department’s officials, says Russia has “dispelled the myth of the superiority of Western weapons” and that its forces gained the initiative along the 1,000km (600-mile) battlefront.

He referenced the fact that the US is poised to supply Ukraine with a new military aid package worth nearly $61bn.

“In proportion to the threats posed by the United States and its allies, we will continue to improve the composition and structure of the armed forces and increase the production of the most popular weapons and military equipment,” Shoigu said.

“We will increase the intensity of attacks on logistics centres and storage bases for Western weapons.”

Yakimanka District – one of the most interesting and prestigious areas of Moscow by popular opinion. It is packed full of well-known historic monuments, museums and large parks. The Yakimanka District changed drastically during the Soviet era: most of the centuries-old low-rise houses and mansions were completely demolished or restructured. By the beginning of the 1990’s, new residential and public complexes had already taken their place.
