Anybody got any information or first hand experience, its on my doorstep but up until an hour ago never even knew it existed. Lock access to Mersey. Dont know if that is an advantage or not.

Kawasaki

Well-known member

Snot for You Bud. Full of Pirates and nere do wells. Cuthroats, Estage agent types. All sorts of Criminals, twisters and Brigands. Then again? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Fit right in. Fifteen minuted from home, never heard of it. And theres me priding myself on my local knowledge. Ideally Id like a berth at Salford. Near United

Searush

It's a bloody long way out to the Bar from there! I guess it would take a whole tide just to get out of the river. The lock access is to stop you sitting in filthy black mud for 10 hours out of every tide. You would probably need locked gates to keep the Warrington junior mafia out too.

Wouldn't you be better berthing on the Thames, then you would be near all the other United fans?

Lawsy, lawsy, lawsy...................................... *shake head with disapproval* /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif On second thoughts, I could do London away games from the thames. Now how much is fuel these days? Thirty grand a season should do it.

There's a marina at Northwich too, but Salford Quays is likely to be pricey. There is a canal boat trip runs to the home matches at OT. How come you don't play with an oval ball?

LittleShip

Very difficult access unless you have something that floats on wet grass, sandbanks change overnight and it has a very short access exit. Not suitable for weekending on the boat. That said there are a couple of guys on the forum that use it for winter storage so just wait for them to answer. Tom

Salford quays would be pricey. Berthing fees and then protection money to the "ordsall harbour boys" I have been on both a seine cruiser type boat (lots of glass) and a barge to the game. Stopped egg chasing many moons ago when David Watkins hung up his boots.

Have a look at liverpool marina, I did a few seasons there and found it OK. It still has the problem of the tidal gate but it's at least five miles closer to the sea and has all the facilities that you could need. Club house was always good and so were the other marina residents. Tom

Does Salford Quays actually provide any private mobo berthing? Despite being a 'bitter blue' baffled I do occasionally go to the Quays for work purposes. Whilst I haven't done a scientific study of it I've never seen anything to suggest there is private berthing. I'm fairly certain that the Quays area is owned by Peel Holdings so they might be able to help you.

Liverpool Marina - shore facilities fine. Boating, unless very experienced & blind to the remnants of the industrial revolution - wouldn't give you tuppence.

Take5

Hello Baffled, I took a look at Fiddlers Ferry and would say it's not suitable for a mobo. The launch ramp max weight is 1 ton and its a rather steep incline. It is really for yachts with the odd mobo kept there for storage only by the looks of it. Good Luck.

Oh dear. Looks like I am stuck in Menai then with Kwackers. Thanks for all the input. On a lighter note it is Swmbo's "time of the month", she has told me she feels like an argument and so has asked if i can just ignore her!!!! " I will do my best darling........ I will do my best" Lawsy, you cant come in Salford if you are blue.Salford is red

There has been a lot of adverse comments about Fiddlers Yacht Haven printed here, I suspect without people knowing the full picture. It has become more popular than it was several years ago when it was taken over by the present owner, whose name I have forgotten. It has its limitations but non are overwhelming. It has lots of positives also. You need a spring tide of at least 28 foot for a boat with a draft of at least 3 to 4 foot. Going upriver you go with the tide which is 1 hour at Warrington than Liverpool, so plenty of time and water. Its the opposite going down river, leaving at HW Warrington its a race cos its already past HW Liverpool but you do get considerable lift from the tides. Last time I left ajust before HW Warrington and manged a meal and drink at the Gazelle at Beaumaris that evening. This was in a Westerly Centaur. Nowadays the owner will meet boats in a RIB and show them the channel. Facilities are limited, being very much of the DIY kind. However there is a lot of experience available and someone usually knows where to go for work to be done. The owner is a welder/engineer and is good at SS components. Boats can remain in the dock/canal or be lifted out by crane onto a trailer or into the yard. I live within a 5 mins bike ride and have not heard of much vandalism or theft. I know people who have been very happy there for the past 2 or 3 years whilst doing refits. Don't think it is going to be incredibly cheap. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I hope my comments haven't come across as being adverse because I didn't intend them to be. The place itself is lovely and we often drive out there for a drink in the pub that overlooks the estuary. I was merely pointing out (knowing that Baffled has a 3.5 ton Four Winns 248) that the ramp itself, as far as I know. Isn't suitable for a boat of that size (it's what they guys in the yard told me when I wanted to leave my boat there) Apologies if my post comes across as a dig. I can assure you I think very highly of the place.

"blind to the remnants of the industrial revolution" That my friend is called "maritime history" /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I will say that the Meni Straits does have a more relaxed charm about it! However I stand by my original comment that the marina is OK. Tom

Sorry Tom, a dirty piece of stone is still a dirty piece of stone, whether it's 15 years old or 150 years old. Similarly rotting and rusting machinery is still rotting and rusting machinery whatever it's age. And no, I'm not anti heritage & culture - just don't like it as the norm whilst I'm out boating.

Facilities are limited, being very much of the DIY kind. However there is a lot of experience available and someone usually knows where to go for work to be done. The owner is a welder/engineer and is good at SS components Hactually, places like this can be little Gems. Once bought a boat in Tarleton lock on the Rufford canal, same sort of set up, ie Bods fixing things with apparent ease with no apparent facilities. The Old Wooden Lady would only make 6 kts. 11 hour trip. Also ending in the Gazelle for a pint! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Jonathan's yard opposite the Gazelle is another Gem.Dunno what I,ll do if He ever packs up /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Sadly, they are all slowly dissappearing, the traditional yards. Owners retires/ dies or simply runs out of income & next thing you know there are houses on the plot. The Thatcher era "quick buck" & "everyman for himself" syndromes still hold sway in most lines of business.

Fidlers Ferry Sailing Club

Fidlers Ferry Sailing Club

We are an active sailing club on the upper reaches of the Mersey (see location). You can call in any Friday evening or Sunday afternoon and be sure of a warm welcome. If travelling far do call first on 01925 723 491 .

This page is to give you an idea of the club, who we are and what we have to offer.

The club has lots to offer active sailors, not least –

  • An active dinghy racing section on the Mersey
  • A yacht cruising and motorboat group based at the club
  • Social members who enjoy the club bar and a bit of sailing
  • A wealth of technical skills and support for all members
  • Formal RYA Training courses

New members of any type are always welcome and young people are made especially welcome with the opportunity to use club equipment and qualified instructors.

Above we play host to the West Kirby Sailing Club, Falcon Fleet for a mid-summer regatta. Using the tides the competitors had sailed up the Mersey from their base at New Brighton.

Everyone enjoyed the racing and particularly the post race hospitality in our licensed club premises. They set off at high water on the following day having made new friends and we look forward to this becoming a regular feature of our season.

Local sailing is governed largely by the tides but a powerful winch makes it easy getting the boats in and out of the water. It’s a team effort and a good way for new members to join in and get to know the group.

We have a wide range of RYA course and all offer the opportunity for ‘tidal experience’ which makes them applicable in any water, worldwide. Our fully qualified trainers use both displacement and planing craft to give you the full experience of power boating whilst our sail training covers a variety of dinghies. You can always use your own craft if that suits you better. Shore based courses such as First Aid are tailored directly to suit the needs of the participants and we can offer a distinctly sailing orientated flavour.

Some of our RYA Courses

RYA Powerboat Level 1 & 2, RYA Safety Boat, Tidal Endorsement of existing qualifications, Dinghy Sailing Level 1 & 2, EFR First Aid Courses (HSE recognised)

The clubhouse overlooks the water and the race observation tower maintains a nautical trend as it was originally the wheelhouse of a seagoing vessel. A variety of sailing conditions and experiences can be had throughout the season.

The photo above shows start of the sailing season for the off-shore fleet. Grey Lady followed by Ki Moon fight hard against the spring tide  as they leave Fidlers Ferry to explore the harbours of North Wales, Scotland  and Ireland. We will see them again in September as we gather round the bar to share all those stories of distant shores and other clubs.

fiddlers ferry yacht club

Despite ranging far and wide the club forms a bond for the cruisers and the fun of “cruising in company” adds to their summer programme.

When the club celebrated it’s hundredth year we produced a  Souvenir Booklet  which has recently been updated. They are available from the bar so why not pop in – check our opening times on the Location Page.
