Everything. about the day sail was perfect. As soon as we got on the boat, it was clear that the crew was there to make our experience special. They put out a great spread of food to munch on, answered all our questions about their beautiful boat, stopped for snorkeling 3 times and when the going got rough for one very short period of time, made sure that everyone was safe. Quite a few people didn't snorkel, but they seemed to be having a great time. Food for lunch was delicious, drinks flowed. Highly recommend!

Beautiful boat! Top notch service! The all day snorkeling package included 3 snorkeling stops, full lunch, unlimited drinks and a friendly, knowledgeable captain and crew. Under challenging wind conditions our captain made sure we had a truly enjoyable day on the water! I can't recommend this family business highly enough... if you've read this far, book a trip! You won't regret it.

Short of a private cruise, there wasn't much else captain and crew could do to make the excursion better - we'll done. We were there at the end of the busy season, early May. My grown daughter took a pill but was still susceptible to seasickness, so out of curiosity I asked the captain for his recommendations. The last one was to steer the boat, which he generously offered to her ! So if you really want to sail, this crew can help make it happen. The capacity of the boat was larger than expected. The amount of food was less than expected (good variety though), but in hindsight is okay since eating and snorkeling isn't the best combination.

Jamison the captain and his first mate Monica were outstanding. The seas were a bit choppy the day we were out, but the boat, built by the captain, handled them well. The boat was clean and well maintained, and both Jamison and Monica were very attentive to everyone's needs

One of the best snorkeling trips ever. We took this trip with friends and had a wonderful time. We made 3 snorkel stops and had lunch on board the boat. The lunch was excellent. I have never had that good of food on a tour. Drinks were included and were not lacking on alcohol. Every crew member went above and beyond to make the trip memorable.

Awesome time no better charter service in all the Caribbean! Whole crew make the experience awesome.

WONDERFUL SUNSET SAIL! We booked the KEKOA for a family outing on their sunset sail. It was a wonderful experience. We were a big group, all wore white, and rode on the Kekoa for a beautiful sunset sail out on Cruz Bay. The crew was fantastic, catering to every person, offering drinks, and little snacks. The music they played was perfect for the ocassion. The black sails on the catamaran are truly breathtaking, and very unique. We wanted to stay on there all night if we could. We even danced and used hula hoops for entertainment. It was a beautiful ending to our week-long trip in St.John.

Kekoa shows her heart of happiness in St. John

kekoa catamaran st john

Six weeks ago we were vacationing on St. John in the American Virgin Islands.  Coronavirus was just starting to tighten its grip on the world.  Full paralysis hadn’t yet set in.

Midway through our time there - clear blue water, yellow sun, green palms swaying, rainbow fish, rum-soaked ice cubes, you get the picture - we made our way down to the harbor to board Kekoa.

Fifty-foot catamaran.  Sailing machine.  Built by hand by two talented brothers.  Intention: sail the islands, have fun, make money by sharing their fun with others, live happily in the sun.

There’s nothing really fancy about Kekoa other than her obvious commitment to fun.  Piles of high class snorkeling gear. A simple galley and downstairs seating and eating area dominated by a bar. Hospitable crew members begin serving rum punches, painkillers, cheese and crackers, and big platters of freshly carved fruit in the morning and keep it coming all day.

In the front of the big cat are lots of places to sit and lie in the sun, soak up the vitamin D, bake thonged buns. Two stretched trampolines span the cat’s pontoons.

When passengers have finished snorkeling their way through coral reefs, tropical underwater flora and fauna, spotted eagle rays, turtles and occasional barracudas just to remind you you’re alive; and when they’re digesting their lunch from a classy outdoor restaurant on nearby Tortola, or at Zoza’s on the sparsely inhabited Lavongo Cay, they can take to the tramps, letting the rhythms from Kekoa’s booming stereo system fill and charge their bodies, easing into carefree dancing while bathed by the sun, grabbing hoola hoops to entertain themselves and their grinning observers, feeling unfettered happiness spilling from every pore.

Around the helm toward the stern of Kekoa, Capt. Jameson - one of Kekoa’s owners and builders - spins yarns about the charmed vessel and her bouts with hurricanes and one or two unscrupulous characters.  If you’ve ever read Joseph Conrad’s Lord Jim, one of the captain’s tales about the abandonment of Kekoa, way out at sea off the coast of Hatteras by the crew of some erstwhile purchasers, will ring familiar. With its chapter chronicling the crewless vessel’s efforts to make its way back to its builders on its own, the tale will convince you of the power of righteousness and the ability of a spirited vessel to grow its own heart and keep it beating.

Conrad wrote another famous novel titled Heart of Darkness.  This particular tale of Kekoa I would title Heart of Happiness.

We enjoyed a full day aboard Kekoa, surrounded by a joyful group of pre-wedding revelers.  As we made our way back toward the wharf with just about every bit of happiness wrung out of us and shadows starting to lengthen, the bride-to-be donned a three-cornered pirate’s hat and stood behind a charged 10-gauge cannon.  Grinning with confidence, she took the firing cord handed to her, made sure all was clear, and on signal from the captain, gave a stout tug and sent a loud, smoky blast echoing across the harbor.  “Honey, I’m home!”

Everyone hooted, hollered and applauded while the crew and passengers of another catamaran ahead of us, making her way sluggishly toward the dock, looked back at us with concern written across their faces.

Capt. Jameson brought out his final trick to delight his passengers.  Hitting a couple buttons on his phone while the cannon’s smoke was still clearing, he dialed up the day’s final music.

It boomed ahead of us even louder than the bride’s cannon: “Move bitch, get out the way, get out the way, get out the way . . . .” Heavy bass, deep, hip hop voice, echoing across St. John’s Cruz Bay harbor, some people wincing, most of them smiling and shaking their heads.  They knew Capt. Jameson was on his way in with another happy charter.

Kekoa’s edgy heart showed its love of life.

The Breathtaking St. John Sunset Cruise You Need to Book

sunset from the Kekoa near St John USVI

Watching a sunset from land is great, but have you ever seen it from a boat?  Sure, you could watch it from Cruz Bay without disappointment, but there is nothing that compares to a St. John sunset cruise.

I had my first such experience a few years ago in Key West after answering the call of a well-timed email solicitation.  Since that unforgettable sunset sail, my husband and I have tried to replicate it in both Maui and Turks and Caicos with no luck.  For totally separate reasons it just didn’t work out.

Oddly enough, though, we never thought to do a sunset cruise in St. John – a Caribbean island we had visited so many times before.  We’d taken charters to the British Virgin Islands , but for some reason had never signed up for a casual sunset sail.  However, our time finally arrived when we realized the beautiful Kekoa catamaran offered such a cruise.

the kekoa catamaran charter boat on st john

This article was originally published in August 2020 and was last updated in December 2022.

The Ultimate St. John Sunset Cruise

We met at the Cruz Bay Visitor Center , which has a dock right next to it.  It was about 20 or 30 minutes before the Kekoa was set to arrive at 5:45, so we waited under a pavilion nearby. There were a handful of other parties waiting as well.

While a few people were antsy that the boat wasn’t there yet, sure enough it pulled up to the dock right on time.  We then lined up and boarded without delay.  A young girl checked us all in, while having everyone remove their shoes on the way up.

Welcome Aboard!

Once aboard, we made our way to the front of the Kekoa, which is a large, beautiful catamaran. The boat is easy to distinguish from others on the water, with its silver body and big, black sails, reminiscent of a pirate ship.

There were about twenty of us in the group, but this boat can perhaps hold fifty or so.  Because of this, there was plenty of space on board for everyone.  In fact, my husband and I basically had an entire bench to ourselves along one side of the boat.

girl sitting towards front of catamaran in blue romper during sunset

Before the cruise embarked, the captain did set some ground rules.  No sitting on the trampoline-looking things up front.  No jumping overboard (obviously).  Be careful when walking around, for you may be thrown overboard.  Just the usual boat stuff.

He explained how the young girl helping was his daughter, and she was going to be handling all the service that evening while he captained the boat.

The St. John Sunset Cruise Experience

sun setting in Pillsbury Sound near st john

We set off towards Pillsbury Sound, which before this boat trip, I had never heard of.  However, once we got going, I realized this is just the familiar waters between Red Hook and Cruz Bay I’d taken dozens of times on the ferry.

This trip took us around various cays and rocks, which until this moment, I had only viewed from St. John’s North Shore beaches . I was so excited when I realized we’d be seeing all these distant places up close. Plus, it sure was a glorious place to have a sunset sail.

As we got going, the daughter went around the group getting drink orders and giving out small hors d’oeuvres.  It was nothing too special – fruits, veggies, and banana bread.  Don’t expect to fill up on it.

There was soft island music playing in the background, while everything started to take on a golden, peachy glow.  The sun was lowering in the distance, and the Kekoa was able to take us to waters where no islands or cays on the horizon would obstruct our view.

Awesome Scenery

jagged rock formation at sunset in pillsbury sound - st john sunset cruise

My favorite part of the trip was passing a really cool rock formation where the sunset fit just perfectly into a little divot at the top.  It was such great timing, one would assume the crew planned it. If so, it was a well-done job by them, as it truly was spectacular.

Since I’m apparently oblivious to names, of course I didn’t realize that this rocky islet has a name as well: Carvel Rock. I had scene this jagged formation so many times from St. John’s beaches, and it always looked so enticing.  I wished I could kayak to it or something to see this lonely rock up close.

Well, I finally did get to see it up close and it’s just a rock, but a beautiful rock at that.  I was still very excited though, and sunset ended up being the perfect time to see it at its prettiest.

Goat Sightings

goat island in pillsbury sounds - st john sunset cruise

One of the most interesting moments of the cruise was passing a lonely, rocky island (Grass Cay, I believe) inhabited by goats.  How they got there is a curiosity, as no one appeared to actually live on this island.

All I know is they were so cute gathering on the rocky tip of the cay for sunset, while they watched us sail on by.

Grand Finale

black sails against pink and purple sky on st john sunset cruise

As we started heading back towards Cruz Bay, the daughter surprised us by initiating a hula hoop contest.  She had some very impressive tricks, hula hooping around her knees, hips, chest and even on one leg!

One young girl took the bait, and held her own with a solid performance.  Being the only contest entry, she won by default and was given the opportunity to light the “Boom”.

Some build-up music, including the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack, was played to add suspense. The girl was given a three cornered pirate hat to wear for effect.

When we got close to shore, we were told to count down from three. The girl then lit what was in essence a fake cannon with a loud, but quick boom.  Very fitting for a ship with black sails, and great fun for those of us yearning to live out our inner pirate.

view of the kekoa from the dock at night

Quite frankly, there is nothing like taking a sunset cruise around St. John. The sunset views over the Caribbean among little islands dotting the horizon is one of the most majestic sights. If you are looking to treat yourself on your next St. John vacation , a Kekoa sunset sail is a fantastic way to do so!

Are planning a sunset sail on the Kekoa in St. John?

In St John USVI there are plenty of things to do, but a sunset cruise is one of the best experiences. The Kekoa catamaran will take you through Pilllsbury Sound to watch the sunset over the glistening Caribbean in the US Virgin Islands. Make sure to bring your camera, as this is a great opportunity to get some St. John photography. Enjoy a leisurely cruise while passing some of the North Shore Beaches at dusk.

Kekoa Catamaran Excursion

We enjoyed a fantastic day on Kekoa, sailing in St. Thomas with our friends and family. Originally we had booked with a different company but when that boat was wrecked on the rocks during a recent storm, Kekoa stepped in and helped a rival company out by taking our group on an amazing day of snorkeling, sailing and lunch! Captain Jameson and crew were knowledgeable, friendly and very attentive. The seas were a bit choppy so Captain Jameson asked me where we'd like to go to see the best snorkeling. I left the helm in his hands! I will definitely book again with them! Thanks for being there when we needed you!

Went on full day excursion on the Kekoa. The tour was excellent, the crew was amazing and it was a truly special day. I would recommend this tour to anyone interested in a good day at sea with family, friends or business associates.

This was a highlight of our trip to St John, We were celebrating a belated 25 anniversary. We went on a sunset cruise for 2.5-3hours long. The views and crew did not disappoint us at all. The sailing vessel is pristine, the crew was amazing with knowledge of the island, plus history of the Kekoa, captain is well seasoned on the water. plus rum drinks and snack were provided.

What a great day on a beautiful boat. Would highly recommend Jamison and his staff. They took wonderful care of us the entire trip. We couldn't ask for anything more.

This was our second outing on the Kekoa and we loved the experience just as much the second time. The weather was perfect (although the crew had no control over that -- but at any rate, they don't go out in bad weather.) The crew is nice, approachable, professional, and relaxed. The captain gave the safety talk efficiently and then told the amazing story of how the boat was built, was lost, and was found. Once the preliminaries were done, we were offered drinks (alcoholic and non) and appetizers and the sails were unfurled. That is the amazing part -- when the ship takes off under sail! Lovely music playing in the background and Pillsbury Sound all around. Add to that a beautiful sunset....It is a pretty romantic event! We had all ages on our ship -- from little ones (I would say 4-6 years range) to grandmothers and grandfathers with the whole family. I think small children may get a little bored but the kids on our ship were well-behaved. We left at about 5:15 and returned at 7:00. Highly recommended and well worth the cost!

This was our first time sailing with Captain Jamison. He and his crew were fantastic. The sail was relaxing, great music and the rum punch was great! We enjoyed getting to know other visitors on the sail. We highly recommend the sunset cruise with Kekoa!
