Boat Review: Viking 55

  • By Dean Travis Clarke
  • Updated: October 12, 2001

The new Viking 55 is dramatically different from other boats in several ways. One, it was built to fill a market niche – hard-core fishing – rather than a size niche. Two, it incorporates features so advanced, so vastly improved over much of what’s available in the production market, that many other boat owners will be green with envy.

Hull No. 1, purchased by the Johnson family of Johnson & Towers engines, will accomplish far more than showcasing the new Detroit/MTU engines. It will make the Johnsons (and any other Viking 55 buyers) loathe to ever switch boats again.

Performance A front came through the night before we were to fish the new Viking, and a northeasterly wind raised the seas up to 4 to 6 feet. Yet at full speed, a little adjustment to the trim tabs dropped the Viking’s sharp entry, and the ride resembled that of a newly paved highway. And the only way to tell that we were running down-sea was by watching the bow rise and fall. No performance clues, such as lugging engines, lurching or swerving gave it away. Evidence of Viking’s quantum leap in technology can be found throughout the boat, including in fuel consumption. Wide-open throttle provides a top speed of 37.8 knots at 2,400 rpm burning 116 gph. Cruising speed of about 31 knots uses 70 gph – better than many comparably sized boats. That equates to about a 460-nautical-mile range. ** Flybridge** If cleanliness is next to godliness, then the 55’s flybridge is heaven-inspired. The venturi windscreen is gone, and the Strataglas enclosure comes straight down to the flybridge coaming. Additionally, a small insert of clear Lucite has been added to the centerline section of the coaming, allowing the helmsman to see the entire foredeck rather than just the tip of the bow. The molded fiberglass helm, which contains no pulls or handles to mar the surface, hides all the fuel gauges, emergency shutdowns, fire systems and so on. One long hatch opens to disclose all the radios, breaker switches and other small electronics, while the larger units get flush-mounted behind clear Lucite hatches. There’s even a press-latch hatch in the overhead that hides the recessed teaser reels. The result is as clean a helm as you’ll find in the industry.

Cockpit As elsewhere, all cabinetry doors have hidden pressure latches for a clean facade. Beneath the salon step you’ll find an insulated drink cooler. The steps have been further refined to extend slightly out and around the cabinetry, making the climb up onto the cabinets (the prime cockpit seating area on any sport-fisherman) easier for less spry anglers. Then too, the cabinets themselves have been enlarged fore and aft by several inches, making for more comfortable seating. Double-duty seems to be a common theme on the Viking 55. The large cockpit sink has been insulated and can double as a drink or bait box if necessary. Two 33-gallon livewells flank a huge athwartship fish box. Both have been plumbed for a bait well, and the starboard well also has an Eskimo ice maker that can provide up to 600 pounds of crushed ice daily. Perhaps the greatest change in the 153-square-foot cockpit is under the gunwales. Viking eliminated the small cabinets that barely hold anything. Now gaffs and mops slide into recessed tubes under the portside deck. Electric cords, water hoses, etc., are in the compartment under the starboard-side deck.

Interior The standard layout offers a centerline double in the bow with a shared head. Moving aft, an over/under double berth follows starboard-side, while the owner’s stateroom opposite includes the second head with shower. A washer/dryer compartment abuts the salon steps to starboard. The galley is what you’d expect, with an upright refrigerator and Corian counters, and the salon also offers a standard convertible layout of dinette to starboard and L-shaped settee housing rod storage to port.

Engine Room Just inside the engine-room hatch are the engine gauges, easily viewed without actually entering the room. There’s kneeling space all the way around each engine, though Viking has kept the equipment mounted outboard to a minimum. The company has gloss-painted the entire space except for the varnished teak and holly. The only slightly awkward part is having to step over the athwartship engine-mount stringer as you move forward. Every spigot and knob is labeled, and a built-in tool chest on the forward bulkhead eliminates the need for a loose chest that might fly around in heavy seas. Viking’s new 55 also has Marine Exhaust straight mufflers rather than the standard lift mufflers. They take up much less room and reduce noise to the point that someone on the flybridge can eavesdrop on conversations in the cockpit.

Construction

Any time you improve either speed or fuel efficiency, you can bet someone has done something to the bottom, and the Viking 55 is no exception. Everything that normally sticks out of the bottom has been faired in, hydrodynamically shaped or eliminated. Bullets in front of the shaft logs, faired-in rudders and flush-mounted thru-hulls make for a totally smooth running surface. Construction consists of a solid fiberglass bottom, encapsulated wood stringers and balsa or Divinycell coring everywhere else. The cockpit overhang is 6 inches longer than on the older 53, and the cabin house curves inward by the cockpit for a smoother transition and better airflow. The Viking step has also been removed – another sign of the company’s commitment to a clean, uncluttered sport-fishing boat.

Viking 55 Convertible

ABOUT THE 55 Convertible

The Viking 55C is a 56-foot convertible sportfishing yacht with a flybridge that was launched by New Jersey-based Viking Yachts in late 2012. This boat is considered to be a relaunch of the original 55C, a vintage model that was produced between 1997 and 2004. Viking sold more than 150 models of the older yacht, and though the all-new Viking 55C shares the same graceful style and mid-size capacity as its forebear, everything else on board this cutting-edge yacht, from navigational tech and high speeds to interior design and fishing equipment, is brand new.

SPECIFICATIONS

  • Beam 17' 9"
  • Draft 5' 1"
  • Displacement 77,700 lbs.
  • Engine Manufacturer MAN
  • Fuel Capacity 1,400 gallons

As with other Vikings , sportfish buyers have the option of installing a custom Palm Beach tuna tower on this yacht for elevated piloting and fish-spotting. Though even without a tower there is great al-fresco piloting to be had from the open flybridge. A pair of helm chairs sit across from a walk-around helm station that has been tailor-made by Viking subsidiary Atlantic Marine Electronics. Experienced owner-operators will enjoy utilizing the Furuno NavNet display, ZF single-lever controls, VIPER steering, Garmin GPS, Simrad autopilot and a FLIR thermal imaging system to help them navigate towards tuna-rich waters. There is also room up here for plenty of seating across a pair of side chaise-longues and a forward-facing sofa built into the helm console with views out across the foredeck.

(Enjoy this review of the Viking 55 from Yachting Magazine from 2012)

One level down and the serious business of fishing is focused on the 151-square foot aft-cockpit that comes lined in either non-slip fiberglass or durable teak. Out here you will find a transom door with a lift gate, Rupp outriggers, flush rod holders, a live-well, an Eskimo ice-chipper, an in-deck fishbox, tackle storage, fresh and salt-water wash-down hoses, chunky grabrails and a floor plate for a Release Marine fighting chair. Should you need to take a break after hauling record marlin onto the deck, then you will be pleased to know that the cockpit also features a mezzanine level with a raised Sunbrella sofa and a drinks chiller.

What really turns the Viking line of convertibles from mere utilitarian sportfishing yachts into family cruisers is the sense of comfort and luxury to be found once one steps inside, and the 55C is no exception to this rule. Rosewood Amtico flooring, glossy grain-matched teak cabinets and joinery, plush carpeting, authentic cream leather upholstery and recessed lighting offer a sedate ambiance in the salon, where you will find an L-shaped sofa and a burl-accented coffee table to port and cabinet-space with a TV stand to starboard. Moving further inside there is a U-shaped dining sofa hugging a breakfast table and an island galley kitchen with granite work surfaces, a cocktail bar with two stools, under-counter Sub-Zero fridge-freezer units, a combination microwave oven and a three-zone hob.

Below deck accommodation is just as sumptuous, and there is room for up to six overnight guests across three en-suite staterooms. A generously proportioned twin berth to port is joined by a double bedroom nestled up against the bow, while a starboard side owner’s stateroom impresses with a queen-sized island bed, bedside cabinets, maple-lined hanging closets and a bathroom with a fiberglass shower stall.

The 55C is one of the most rapid yachts in its class, with top speeds of around 42 knots provided by a pair of MAN V12 1550MHP diesel engines. At a more leisurely pace of 30 knots this yacht has a range of around 440 nautical miles, more than enough to take a trip down to the Florida Keys, while a reinforced fiberglass hull with prop pockets proves balanced and efficient across both inshore and bluewater conditions.

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.

Coordinates of elektrostal in degrees and decimal minutes, utm coordinates of elektrostal, geographic coordinate systems.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
