Timeline of Restoration: Old Yacht Club, Mumbai

The old yacht club, formerly known as the royal Bombay yacht club, was founded in 1846 in Colaba. It was initially envisioned to be one of the premiere gentlemen’s clubs in the Mumbai area. Today this Mumbai Yacht club acts as the headquarters of the department of atomic energy government of India. It served the Tata institute of fundamental research for a brief period in 1949. John Adams designed the old yacht club. John Adams is credited with designing the Mumbai Gymkhana, Police courts etc. and has a street named after him. 

The club’s location, Close to the coast, offers a splendid overlooking view of the Gateway of India. It lies near some of the architectural wonders of Mumbai city, like the Taj hotel, Maharashtra police headquarters, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, to name a few. The club is known for its sailing facilities on the Arabian sea. Other than that, it houses a library, Club shop, Bar, Lounge, and ballrooms for its exclusive members. The club offers chambers for residence overlooking the Gateway of India, a bar, a lounge, a restaurant , ballrooms, a club shop, a library, a members’ sleeping room, and sailing facilities in the Arabian Sea.

Style and Architecture  | Mumbai Yacht Club

The Royal yacht club was built in indo – gothic style of architecture with Victorian interiors. Gothic style was prevalent in Bombay during the mid- 19th century . The building boasts a rich material palette consisting of Mangalore tiles, Wood, and extensive plaster work. It has intricate glasswork in its openings and features a rich earthy color palette. The stone cladding on the exterior gives the yacht club exquisite air. The Roof style is an amalgamation of sloping roofs and conical pointed roofs at the edges of the building, accentuating the structure. The original interior was Victorian in style and featured intricate woodwork with a smooth plaster finish on the walls. The stained glass adds to the signature gothic look of the old yacht club. Wood’s rich brown tones and creamy white palette give a royal look. The corridors and interiors see the extensive use of pointed arches set against high ceilings, another prominent feature of gothic architecture.

The old yacht club building is an essential milestone in the gothic buildings of Bombay. Under the crown rule during the mid-19th century, Bombay’s Gothic style became prominently used. Some famous examples of Gothic-style buildings in Bombay are, The telegraph office, saint Xavier’s college, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, to name a few. While the earliest of them were designed and commissioned by the Britishers, the mid-1800s saw a rise in the opium and cotton trade, making Indian merchants wealthier. This led to them also commissioning work from British architects as an attempt to mark their presence in Mumbai . This was succeeded by the birth of the Hindu gothic style, which saw elements like chhatris, jails, domes etc. combined with typical gothic features like split facades, multi-colored stained glasses, etchings, and engravings in the façade, pointed arches etc., used in a mixture of Indian and foreign material palette.

Restoration

The restoration of the Old Yacht club was initially done by Ar. Vikas Dilwari in the year 2012. It included efforts to restore the club’s original Victorian interiors and treat its exteriors and common areas. Art deco style was introduced to the flooring, making it lively and cheerful. This was followed by restoration efforts by Somaya and Kalappa architects , a conservation firm based out of Mumbai. They worked on strengthening the original structure. The requirements of the new user, the department of atomic energy government of India, were kept in mind during the restoration. The year 1976 saw about one-third of the structure being demolished due to structural reasons. So R.C.C. interventions had to be done by S.N.K. The restoration efforts received much applause and an award of merit from UNESCO during the 2013 Asia-Pacific Heritage awards. The old yacht club, in all its indo gothic glory, remains a hidden gem in the sea of gothic, Victorian and colonial buildings of Bombay.

History | Mumbai Yacht Club

The old yacht club was constructed in 1846. It was initially presided over by Henry Morland as the club Commodore, responsible for the management and running of the club. It took 30 years for the club to become known as the royal Bombay yacht club, on the recommendation of sir Philip Edmond Wodehouse and the patronage of Queen Victoria. The year 1881 saw the construction of the seafront clubhouse. The prominence of the club rose after that. The royal family of Duke, Duchess of Connaught, and H.R.H. prince Arthur were some of the club’s prominent personalities in its initial years of commencement. The club was initially restricted to Indian members, but flowing a brief closure in 1958 for not accepting Indian members, it started accepting. A clubhouse was added to the existing structure in 1896. The purpose of this clubhouse was to provide accommodations for its members. The new clubhouse was executed in Venetian gothic style with indo Saracenic features.

Sailors Paradise - The Royal Bombay Yacht Club

The Royal Bombay Yacht Club (RBYC) was founded in 1846 in Colaba (formerly Wellington Pier), an area of Mumbai in India , for the lovers of the sea.

The club provides for restaurant and hotel facilities along with sailing events and championships for members and sailors. For all the sailing lovers who want to get on to a sailboat at the Gateway of India in order to enjoy the soft ocean breeze, the sound of waves, unrivalled views of the city skyline, and a magnificent sunset, this is the perfect club for you. However, an inherently exclusive club, membership to the RBYC sometimes takes years for a person to acquire.

Back in 1958, the Bombay Club was closed for not accepting Indian members. The RBYC granted honorary memberships to all Bombay Club members and provided a new home for their furniture and other effects. However, in 2013 the Royal Bombay Yacht Club Residential Chambers received an award of merit in the 2013 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards.

Recently, world-famous filmmaker Christopher Nolan shot the movie Tenet in Mumbai. The shoot locations for Tenet include iconic spots in Mumbai like Breach Candy Hospital, Cafe Mondegar, Colaba Causeway, Colaba Market, Gateway of India, Grant Road , Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and of course, the grand Royal Bombay Yacht Club.

Once you are a member at the RBYC, you can rent a sailboat at a minimal cost, or even free; go sailing as often as you like; and take a few friends each time to have a wonderful experience on the sea.

The Royal Bombay Yacht Club is a trip into a colonial era long past. The location is excellent and our room had a great view of the Gateway of India. The building is evocative of the RAJ and the rooms- large white washed and airy... have cupboards and beds, chairs and tables from the time of the British. The Dining room and bar are olde world, potted palms, white table clothes and comfortable armchairs. Service in the dining room and bar are excellent. The menu has a lot of old favourites including bread and butter pudding ( very good). The snag is you have to be a member or the guest of a member. Breakfast isn't as well served or extensive as Lunch & Dinner. Mrs Bagchi , the Catering Manager is very helpful and ensures dietary requirements are met. There is no parking available and if you have a car and driver you have to park on the main street and pay a fee, There is a toilet for the driver but no other facilities. More

The check-in could have been more freindly but the staff behind insisted on paying another 25% deposit,when told have already paid 50% & could i pay a little later. The rooms were on the 4th Floor.The Lift was working well but could do a little... bit of uplifting in the interiors. The rooms are colonial & large ,but i feel there is a lot of scope for adding more rooms & retain the old world charm but the sitting needs better airconditioning & avoid opening the windows as you may face the wrath of insects/mosquitoes.The road traffic too is pretty More

The most value for money place on the planet!!! The best eggs kejriwal ever - much better than in where it was invented (Willingdon Club). My favourites are the golden fried prawns and the lobster thermidor. The team and coffee services are just so cool... and elegant. More

Traditional seafarers club , situated close to Gateway and Taj Hotel, is a more than a century old club, established during the British rule, continues its old traditions and style. It is exclusively for its members and accompanying guests. The service is good and food... is tasty. More

Great spacious room, excellent breakfasts, convenient store downstairs was great to have nearby too and helpful, friendly staff. Only reason why it was not 5 stars was because massages were only available to men which seems antiquated to me (but I understand the bylaws and... traditions of the club's rules). Also, wished the water geyser stayed on a bit longer than 20 minutes but it was all good! More

Extremely spacious rooms and staying here is like living in a palace. Sea facing rooms give you the feeling of staying in the Taj which is next door. The rooms have only been partially modernised and it certainly gives the colonial feel but some more... modernisation is needed. Stayed in 2 different rooms in 2 days and was spoiled for space in a city like Bombay. Each room is bigger than the biggest suite you can imagine ! The food is quite decent, however the buffet breakfast could be better. I would rate CCI breakfast better but for rest of the food items, Yacht Club is superior. Surprisingly the bar had no offers on any of the drinks ! In the month of December almost entire India has offers on alcohol! Wonder why is this club being left out. The lounge is good and has a good spread of sandwiches, burgers, etc. Overall typical colonial feel, in other words Old world charm. Can stay here forever. More

Wonderful atmosphere. 70s and 80s music with bubbles. Service excellent. Attentive, fun and professional. Food was spectacular. India meets the ocean. The happy balls are a bucket list item.

The clubs in Mumbai are exclusive to members and their guests only. The food is fairly inexpensive and delicious all have a variety of cuisines I opted for continental and had the fish in wine sauce there is a fixed menu or alacarte both are... good. Again a chilled Sula Chenin Blanc with the fish was delicious.. Desserts were heavenly More

I came to Mumbai on invitation for business so the stay was payed for. I was supposed to stay at the Yacht Club for two nights, but for the first night I was brought to another hotel, because rooms at the club weren't ready. When... I arrived at the yacht club the next day, I was actually told off by the manager for not having shown up the previous night(?) and next he told me that my room was still not ready. I could put my luggage in my colleague's room. The room is absolutely spacious, everything is old but full of character. The shower system was horrible, nearly came of the wall and delivered no hot water. I brought earplugs and needed them, because Mumbai is noisy and the hotel has no soundproofing. I did not try the breakfast, so I cannot comment on that but my colleague was unimpressed. Despite these letdowns my colleague wanted to leave a porter a tip but had only large bills, so I tried to get them to change it into smaller bills in the club's shop. They bluntly refused. The location is amazing, you cannot be closer to the Gateway of India, the ferries to Elephanta Island. One of the many highlights was lunch in the restaurant of Taj Mahal hotel. More

The desk person was rude he could not answer my simple question if we could come for breakfast. Later he said you are not a member Sorry and slammed the phone down. They need to hire better people

The Royal Bombay Yacht Club has the old world charm. It is absolutely beautiful. The wooden interiors bring a charm to the place. The food was spectacular. Thoroughly enjoyed the continental delights that they served us. All in all a brilliant experience.

Members only.....but you can read the plaque and admire the architecture and marvel at this cathedral of a yacht club.

We booked online Yacht for 2 hrs family ride. The service provided; 1. Time changed to 1855 hrs thus we missed the sunset viewing; 1. unsafe riding at Gate way of India; 2. Seaway transportation to our 6 seated yacht, parking in mid sea by... a small fishing boat, anytime prone to fatal accident. This boat is operated by a untrained youth with no safety jacket in the boat; 3. Shifting to the yacht at mid sea without any proper facility 4. The meal provided is thrown away by us. More

Unbelievable place if one is a Club person. As it is only for Members and guests, entry is restricted. Nothing fancy but plenty of old world colonial charm. Go there if you want to go back in time. Food is good and service is courteous.... Great location next to the Gateway of India. A must visit if possible More

The RBYC is a club that caters to members and their guests. It is a historic building with high ceilings, lots of wood and has been tastefully renovated/ updated. The food is tasty and reasonably priced. The service is a throw back to colonial times... with members using handbells to summon the wait staff; the extreme deference shown by staff to the members who can be demanding and pretentious. The location is extremely noisy as it is next to the Gateway of India plaza. The racket of the irritating car horns and traffic is constant and round the clock and can be heard even when the windows are closed and the air conditioning is running. More

About The Club

The historic Mumbai Sailing Club was formed by a group of passionate sailors with the mission to promote sailing in Mumbai. The club is located at Gateway of India, Colaba and it is among the very few yacht clubs in the country to provide a complete set of sailing facilities. The club began its sailing activities with just 2 Seabird class boats in the early years. Today, the club has a fleet of 20+ yachts through reciprocal tie ups.

Over the years, the club has become a destination for sailing enthusiasts to learn sailing and pursue it as a hobby. The club is famous for its training programs and has produced top class sailors, including several national champions and coaches. Every year, the club also conducts sailing expeditions to nearby beaches and islands.

Sailing Facilities

The sailing activities of the Association are conducted along with The Royal Bombay Yacht Club (RBYC) and the Colaba Sailing Club (CSC) who are our sister clubs. The Joint Sailing Committee is chaired by the RBYC Commodore and comprises of qualified helms and boat owners. The BSA representative sits on this Committee. It is this Committee that mainly guides the sailing activities of the 3 clubs. The racing and cruising activities are mostly initiated at Mumbai from the RBYC premises to which the BSA members have access.

Sailing Program: A comprehensive sailing program is brought out by this Committee at the start of the sailing season in October, it has on offer sailing activities to suit all. Be it racing, training programs, regattas, champsionships, day and weekend cruises, there is something for all appetities.

Racing: Should you be inclined to try your hand at racing,.not a problem, we take stark novices and put them on a boat participating in a race and they soon pick up the ropes (literally). All you need to do is call up Mr. Santosh or Mr. Rajan in the sailing room and tell them to try and book you a berth on a boat that is going racing. Then you land up the Yacht Club at the specified hour, dressed in appropriate gear which is shorts, T shirt, sneakers, cap, sun glasses (optional) and water. There are some races where the BSA is directly involved. These races are from Mumbai to Mandwa and back to Mumbai the next day. It involves racing to Mandwa on Saturday afternoon, staying overnight at the BSA properties where there is catered dinner party and race back Sunday afternoon. Accommodation and meals are provided for as part of the race entry fee and needs to be booked well in advance, as these races are very popular among the regular sailors.

Training program: There are normally two training programs in a sailing season from October to May. The first one is held at the start of the season and the second one in January or February. This program provides on the water hands-on training and some classroom tutorials. Member helmsmen take you out on the water so you have one helm to 2 or 3 students on the boat. Kindly check the Sailing Program Document for dates. It is available on this website. If you want individual attention there are sailors who will take you out and teach you sailing one on one.

Boats: The boats normally used by adults, are Seabird class and Lightning class, which are in a common pool belonging to the 3 clubs. A Seabird carries a complement of 4 crew plus tandal while a Lightning accommodates 3 plus tandal. You can go sailing in any of a total of 14 boats, when a boat of your club is not available. Hence you are mostly assured of getting a boat when you want one. The Seabird is the most stable and safe , especially designed for Bombay Harbour. If you have children who are a bit wary of the sea, a Seabird sail would be ideal.

Just Cruising: Should you wish to follow the dictates of your heart and just go cruising or wish to practice your hand at helming, just book a boat and land up at the specified time at the jetty and ask for the tandal of the boat you have booked. The tandals are all qualified sailors and will ensure the safety of the boat at all times. Until you get your helmsman certificate, remember, the tandal is the captain when you are sea and one has to follow his instructions.

Boat Booking Procedure: Simply stated you could book a boat by calling up the sailing room at the RBYC. You will have to first ask for any one of the 2 BSA Seabirds. In case they are not available you then have an option of booking boats of the other 2 clubs. You can book boats 5 days after 7 pm, prior to the date required, by calling on + 91 22 22882788 - Mr. Rajan / Mr. Santosh or at the RBYC reception +91 2267527250. That means you would need to book on Tuesday, after 7 pm, if you need a boat for the coming Saturday. Since the boats are in a common pool the boat booking procedure needs to be followed.

Residential Facilities

The Clubhouse: The Clubhouse has 5 residential rooms with attached bathrooms. Room 2 is the biggest with two double beds. Rooms 1 and 5 have three beds each and room 3 and 4 are double beds. Limited additional beds/mattresses are available upon request. The Clubhouse grounds provide a panoramic view of the sea, the jetty and life at the moorings. There are sufficient grounds around the clubhouse to wander and find a quiet corner to contemplate or just look at the sea. There are a few hammocks strung around for you to chill on, a barbeque area for you to indulge your culinary skills, as well as a volleyball net, carom board and board games for you to enjoy during your stay. Two Kayaks have been added for members and guests. The Club provides life jackets for your safety and as a mandatory requirement.

The Dormitary (Sleepout): Within the same compound is the sleep out/dormitory, right on the water's edge. During high tide the ocean provides a great lullaby to put you to sleep. Here you book and pay for a bed (Mattress) for the night. A great economy package and you can't beat the view. There are separate dedicated toilets and bathrooms for this facility and use of the Clubhouse with it's fully equipped kitchen with staff.

The Annexes: The club has 7 annexes. These are individual cottages by the sea for those of you who value privacy. Each of these shacks have individual caretakers who can assist you in the kitchen, make beds and keep the property clean.

Windfall: Windfall is the first bungalow on the beach as you approach from the jetty. Windfall has totally 3 bedrooms. 2 bedrooms, with attached bathrooms, at the ground level and one bedroom on the first level with an independent veranda cum sit out. Two bedrooms on the ground floor level are fitted with air conditioners. A spacious kitchen, a ground level sit-out with a dinning area, a compound area with stone benches, an uninterrupted view of the ocean, and loads of trees and shade.

Tucked In: As the name suggests the bungalow is "tucked in" greenery and foliage that surrounds this property. It has two airconditioned rooms with attached bathrooms, a kitchen, dining & sit out, and a green compound area. Tucked in is in between Windfall and Raha.

Raha: Raha stands third in line on the beach and has a fairly large area outside the bungalow which is perfect to barbeque and is used by our young optimist sailors to conduct land drills when not out learning to sail on the water. It has three rooms (2 AC and one Non-AC).

Little Hut: Recently refurbished and modernised, this charming bungalow has two airconditioned bedrooms with attached bathrooms, a kitchen, dining & sit out area that overlooks the moorings.

Battery Park: A classic bungalow on the beach, it has two airconditioned bedrooms with attached bathrooms, a kitchen, dining & sit out with 6 beds to sleep out; accommodating a total of 10 people at a time.

Zopdi: A one bedroom shack with two bathrooms, a kitchen and a veranda with 4 beds. It sleeps a total of 6 people.

Linger Longer: Last in the row of bungalows belonging to BSA, located after the main club house and sleep out/dormitory is a charming property with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, a large kitchen and dining area and sit out which is designed to look like the bow of a boat! With 4 beds on the 1st floor and 2 beds in the bedroom on the ground floor, this property also offers 4 beds in the living room, accommodating a total of 10 people at a time.

Payment for your stay and use of the facilities will be added to your monthly bill and may be made online or settled directly using a credit or debit card while in Mandwa.

Food: The drill is to carry your cooked food or carry the ingredients and use the kitchen to cook it. Surekha at the club and Babi's (the Zopdi caretaker) wife, could be requested to cook for you. However, this is not in their job description and they are not obligated to do this especially when they have other pressing duties. The club store has some basic ingredients like dal, rice, tea, coffee, oil, tooth brush and paste, soap etc. The caretakers could be requested to get fresh milk, eggs, bread, vegetables on cash basis from the nearby village provided sufficient notice is given to them.

Catering: If organizing to carry food is a problem there are other options. There is tried and tested resort nearby called Countryside. They serve your typical home type cooked Maharastrian food. You could call them at 02141 237123 (Ms. Anju) and ask them to deliver. They send delicious food packed in tiffens. They need about 3 to 4 hours advance notice. Sanman at Alibag is another favourite for the seafood lovers. You can reach them at 02141 222314. Due to the distance the delivery charges are a bit heavy. But the prawns masala and the shells masala are to die for. Ask them for their full menu.

These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.

The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.

“Breakfast & Lunch among friends”

The Breakfast Club has been a locally-owned Moscow breakfast staple for 12 years. The food is delicious, and the portions are appropriate (not gigantic). They have stuffed biscuits and gravy which is biscuits cut in half with eggs and bacon in the middle, covered in in-house made sausage gravy. If you are ever in Moscow in the wee hours of the morning, this is the place to stop!!!

Facilities: Bar open Wed. thru Sun 1000 to 2400. Dining room open Wed.- Sun for lunch and dinner (breakfast on Sat. & brunch on Sun.) Snack bar open every day from Memorial Day to Labor Day 1000 to 1630. Heated Pool and Paddle Tennis Courts available to members and their guests. 320 member slips (25’ to 120’), 100+ dry storage slips (up to 25’), two 2-ton hoists and launch ramp. Guest docks are first come, first served, but call for reservations. First night free for reciprocal club members. CYC monitors channel 68.

Junior program: Year round. Junior Sailing and Rowing Program. Open to all youths in the community (ages 8-18). Full time Junior staff.

CYC offers a variety of summer programs for junior age (13 – 18) boys and girls. CYC membership is not required to enroll. We have programs suited for all juniors with an interest in rowing from those wishing to try the sport for the first time to those training for national competitions.

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.
