80m Heesen flagship Genesis delivered under new ownership

Under new ownership, Heesen, the Dutch shipyard, has unveiled its latest flagship, the 80-meter superyacht Genesis. Previously referred to as Project Cosmos and Galactica, this all-aluminium vessel was technically completed in the previous year, with sea trials conducted in April 2022.

In an official statement, Heesen announced that the yacht was formally handed over to its new owners on August 31st. The shipyard also confirmed that the sale and delivery of the yacht were carried out in coordination with Dutch authorities. In May of the previous year, the shipyard underwent a change in ownership structure, becoming an independent foundation, thereby ensuring its complete Dutch ownership and allowing it to continue constructing and delivering yachts.

Genesis now surpasses Heesen’s previous flagship, the 70-meter Galactica Super Nova, by an impressive 10 meters. It claims the title of the fastest aluminium yacht in its size category, powered by four MTU 4000 M73 engines with a combined output of 19,000hp.

The yacht boasts exterior styling crafted by the British studio Winch Design, while Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design was tasked with designing the interior. This project represents Heesen’s third collaboration with Sinot.

Genesis offers accommodation for up to 12 guests, distributed across six cabins, including a luxurious main deck owner’s suite, a bridge-deck VIP cabin, and four cabins on the lower deck. Additionally, the crew quarters are designed to accommodate a staff of 19 individuals.

Among its standout features is a certified helideck located on the bow, beneath which is a spacious tender garage capable of housing a custom limousine designed by Winch.

According to BOATPro, Heesen currently has eight projects in various stages of construction. Genesis joins three other superyachts expected to be delivered this year, including the 60-meter Ultra G.

At 80.07 metres, 1,700 Gross Tons and with a top speed of 29 knots, Genesis, previously Project Cosmos is the world’s largest and fastest all-aluminium motoryacht with conventional propeller propulsion system. Winch Design created a streamlined yacht with innovative design traits but still retaining the Heesen DNA: muscular sportiness and timeless elegance. The design, engineering, technology and craftsmanship in this extraordinary yacht represent a milestone not just for Heesen, but for the yachting industry in general.

First impressions

Some of the most notable features on board Genesis are the fully-rated helicopter landing pad for a Eurocopter EC135 that transforms into an outdoor cinema with stunning effect; the crystal elevator from the lower deck to the sun deck for chic accessibility; the breath-taking seven-metre pool with contra-jets for swimming, paired with a waterfall and glass bottom; the sumptuous beach club with a sunken walk-around bar and large transom and side platforms. To give her the necessary longitudinal strength, we designed and patented a complex, full-length structural reinforcement system that we call The Backbone. Yacht dealer to the stars attacked by Rhysida ransomware gang

Marinemax may be in choppy waters after 'stolen data' given million-dollar price tag.

The Rhysida ransomware group claims it was responsible for the cyberattack at US luxury yacht dealer MarineMax earlier this month.

MarineMax, which posted multibillion-dollar revenues last year, disclosed a cyberattack to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on March 10, saying portions of its business were disrupted as a result of the containment measures it enacted.

At the time, the Clearwater, Florida company didn't mention any involvement of ransomware, and its operations were said to have "continued throughout this matter in all material respects."

The Form 8-K filed with the SEC earlier this month states: "The Company does not maintain sensitive data in the information environment impacted by the incident."

Rhysida this week posted a snippet of the data it claims to have stolen from MarineMax to its website, but the montages of documents don't clearly or conclusively reveal their nature. The majority of the leaked documents appear to be related to accounts and finances.

We asked the crooks if they could confirm exactly what kind of data they allege they took from MarineMax, but they didn't immediately respond.

In typical fashion for the group, Rhysida says it is holding a seven-day auction on its site. If it receives a bid it deems fair for the value of the data it claims to have stolen, it will sell it to a single third party on an exclusive basis, rather than making it public.

This method essentially acts as a second means to monetize an alleged breach if the victim refuses to pay. In the usual double extortion ransomware scenario, the attacker requests a ransom, then dumps the stolen data online if the victim doesn't pay.

Rhysida would still likely make the data public if it doesn't receive a bid to its satisfaction – the current price is set at 15 Bitcoin ($1.007 million) – but the auction offers a potential plan B payout that other groups rarely utilize.

"With just seven days on the clock, seize the opportunity to bid on exclusive, unique, and impressive data," its website reads.

"Open your wallets and be ready to buy exclusive data. We sell only to one hand, no reselling, you will be the only owner!"

MarineMax deals in new and used boats, brokers yachts, and markets itself as "the world's largest recreational boat, yacht, and superyacht services company."

Given the nature of its business and the value of the products it deals with, its clientele is likely comprised of high earners and wealthy elites – individuals who would not be too keen on having any sensitive data and accounting information in the hands of criminals.

If the data stolen by Rhysida did indeed include this kind of information, it would be easy to make a case for it being valued at 15 Bitcoin ($1.007 million), given the potential phishing and financial fraud campaigns that miscreants could carry out.

Keen readers of El Reg will remember that Rhysida was responsible for the attack on the British Library last year – one from which the national institution is still trying to recover. It's still the gang's biggest scalp to this day.

Shortly after the incident, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) published an extensive report on the group, raising awareness of its typical behaviors so organizations can plug any holes it regularly exploits.

CISA says it sees similarities between the operations of the group, named after a genus of centipede, and those of Vice Society ransomware gang. It's also known to remote into MFA -less victims' networks using stolen credentials, by phishing employees, or by exploiting vulnerabilities such as Zerologon . ®

Genesis, Hyundai and Kia Charging Control Unit Recall: A Primer

While Genesis, Hyundai and Kia may operate as distinct — or nearly distinct — entities in the U.S., all three fall under the umbrella of Hyundai Motor Group, meaning their vehicles often share platforms, powertrains and other components. Electric vehicles from each brand are an illustrative example of this phenomenon, with most currently available EVs from all three underpinned by some configuration of the group’s Electric Global Modular Platform, or E-GMP. One key component of the E-GMP architecture is the Integrated Charging Control Unit, or ICCU, which is similar to onboard chargers in other EVs but has added functionality; the ICCU is even present in the Genesis Electrified GV70 and Electrified G80, which aren’t E-GMP vehicles. Almost 150,000 EVs — Genesis GV60s, Electrified GV70s and Electrified G80s; Hyundai Ioniq 5s and Ioniq 6s; and Kia EV6s — are being recalled for issues with the ICCU; what does that mean for current owners and prospective shoppers?

What’s the Integrated Charging Control Unit?

In other EVs, this part is called the onboard charging module (or some similar proprietary term). These EVs, however, have bidirectional charging capability — that is, they can offboard power from the battery pack to other devices. The ICCU, therefore, allows for power to flow in two directions instead of just one like with a traditional onboard charger.

What’s the Issue?

According to the various recall documentation, the issues appear to be similar, though they’re not described the exact same way. In Hyundai and Genesis EVs, “The ICCU may be subject to certain electrical load conditions that can damage internal components and open the ICCU fuse.” In the Kia EV6, meanwhile, “The Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) may become damaged over time from transient high voltage and thermal cycling.” In both instances, the result is an inability to provide power to the auxiliary 12-volt battery, resulting in an eventual loss of power.

This isn’t the first time the ICCU has had issues, either. Owners around the world have reported various issues, which have at times been linked to leaking coolant, allowing the ICCU to overheat (sounds similar), or the vehicle’s connected services waking up the car too often and unintentionally draining the battery (not that similar). These issues have been reported since 2021, though this is the first official U.S. recall for this part by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The technical service bulletins for both Hyundai and Genesis service departments recommend the draining and replacement of motor coolant, but they make no mention of ICCU-specific leaks.

Regardless of how a fault happens, the ICCU being unable to power the battery results in a lack of motive power, leaving the afflicted EV in a brief “limp mode” state with significantly reduced power before eventually losing drive power entirely. You don’t have to be a certified mechanic to understand that that’s suboptimal and potentially dangerous, especially if it occurs on a busy highway.

What Are the Warning Signs?

According to the Genesis and Hyundai recall notice, owners will likely experience the some or all of the following:

• Illumination of the malfunction-indicator light (aka the check-engine light, except EVs technically don’t have engines) in the vehicle’s instrument cluster
• Audible chime
• Warning messages displayed in the vehicle instrument cluster
• Reduced motive power or inability to accelerate above a certain speed

Reports indicate that drive power will remain for “approximately 22-45 minutes,” but that is both not that long and a significantly variable range of time; it’s best to pull over to a safe location as soon as possible should you see these warnings and experience a reduction in power.

For the Kia EV6, NHTSA says there would be audible warning chimes and at least one of the following:

• Illumination of “Check Electric Vehicle System” warning light
• Master warning light
• Charging system warning light
• “Stop vehicle and check power supply” warning light
• Power down (turtle) warning light
• Reductions in motive power

Some owner complaints have also described an audible “popping” sound when these issues occurred, but these reports are inconsistent, and it’s possible you may not hear or recognize a similar sound. The complaints also don’t indicate a significant passage of time between the pop and the above warning indicators and chimes.

Is Your Vehicle Affected?

If you already own a model-year 2022-24 Hyundai Ioniq 5 or 2023-24 Ioniq 6; model-year 2023-24 Genesis GV60, Electrified GV70 or Electrified G80; or model-year 2022-24 Kia EV6, the bad news is that your vehicle is probably part of the current recall. According to a statement from Kia, the recall affects “all” 2022 and 2023 EV6s, but only certain 2024 models. It appears to be a similar situation for Hyundai and Genesis, based on yearly sales figures and the number of each vehicle affected.

To be certain if a vehicle is affected, owners with questions can contact Hyundai at 855-371-9460 (Hyundai’s recall number is 257/021G), Kia at 800-333-4542 (Kia’s recall number is SC302), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more. Recall notices for affected Hyundai and Genesis models are scheduled to be mailed on May 14, while Kia notices are to be sent April 29.

Affected vehicles still at ports will be repaired before moving on to dealer lots; for those already on sale, you can check the production date by looking at the sticker affixed to the driver-side door jamb. Below is a list of production dates for these respective vehicles that should have addressed this issue during the manufacturing process; any vehicle built on or after these dates should be free of the ICCU issue.

• EV6: Feb. 8, 2024

If the model you’re looking at has a production date before any of the above dates, you can check its vehicle identification number to see if there are any outstanding recalls (including this one) and confirm with the dealer that this will be repaired before taking delivery.

What’s the Fix?

Affected vehicles will have their ICCUs checked by dealership service technicians; damaged or otherwise faulty units will be replaced at no charge, and a software update will also be installed. For Hyundai and Genesis models, “The remedy ICCU software prevents overcurrent and implements voltage peak reduction at the end of EV battery charging. The remedy software also revises the electric water pump operational threshold to reduce thermal loading during charging and driving.” For the Kia EV6, meanwhile, “The improved ICCU software decreases thermal loading and lowers peak voltage during operation to mitigate damage to the ICCU.”

In no instance does it appear that the ICCU has been redesigned or modified; rather, the software that manages its operation has been updated.

Less than a day after its electrified sibling made headlines with a massive recall affecting 170,000 Hyundai group EVs in North America, the gasoline-powered Genesis GV70 is now caught up in its own recall saga.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), on February 8, 2024, a Genesis GV70 at a dealership in the United States rolled out of its parking spot, injuring one person. This unfortunate incident revealed a transmission flaw in the vehicle, prompting a recall of 15,645 units of the ICE-powered GV70

Following the dealership incident, Genesis launched an investigation into the roll away issue and on February 22, the company discovered that the problem could be replicated in other vehicles at the factory.

While looking into the issue, the automaker’s investigators discovered moisture and corrosion in the transmission control harness connector. This condition resulted in an abnormal signal, triggering a malfunction light to illuminate on the dashboard.

Ultimately, Genesis determined that its supplier had been incorrectly installing the blanking pins in empty connector cavities. This installation error allowed water to leak into the connector, resulting in a transmission shifting error. This error could potentially cause the GV70 to slip into Neutral when it was intended to be in Park.

Naturally, that’s a problem, because a vehicle in Neutral could roll away on anything put perfectly flat ground. So far, only one injury has occurred as a result of this issue, and the incident at the dealership is the only instance of a vehicle rolling away in the field that Genesis is aware of.

The problem affects vehicles equipped with both the turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6. However, only American-made models are impacted by this issue, so readers in other countries don’t need to worry about their vehicles rolling away.

Genesis plans to start reaching out to 2024 GV70 owners in the U.S. on May 14. They will be asked to return their SUVs to a nearby dealer, where the control harness connector will be inspected. The connector, the control harness, and the transmission’s internal wiring will be replaced where necessary.

Until the recall is complete, Genesis strongly recommends that GV70 owners apply the parking brake before leaving their vehicles.

• The owner of a Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee, per CBS8.
• The employee said Ajay Thakore mooned and threw cash at him after being told he couldn't use the dock.
• Thakore, the CEO of Doctor Multimedia, issued an apology through his public relations team.

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee after being told he couldn't be there, the San Diego-based broadcaster CBS8 reported on March 11.

Joseph Holt, a 21-year-old employee at Marriot Marina in San Diego, told CBS8 that he spotted the yacht sailing into the private dock. The owner, whom CBS8 identified as Ajay Thakore, tried to pick another person up at the dock, Holt said.

"I told him respectfully that he couldn't be there, and I honestly was hoping to have a conversation with him about his cool boat," Holt told CBS8.

In a YouTube video posted by @SM-wc9eq on March 10, a dark blue Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is seen sailing out of a dock. A man in a gray T-shirt, a pair of jeans, and a cap was shown standing on the yacht. The man appeared to be Thakore, per CBS8.

Thakore was shown shouting at Holt. "I will kill you, you know I will kill you!" he can be heard saying multiple times in the video

Thakore was later shown pounding his fist on his palm and pointing his thumb down before telling Holt: "To your face!" Holt was shown responding by pointing his middle finger at Thakore.

"I really was trying to restrain myself from getting fired from my job or stepping out of line. The only thing I did was give him the bird," Holt told CBS8.

Holt said Thakore then took $100 bills from his wallet and threw them at him. He added that Thakore mooned him. This exchange was not shown in the video.

"He was saying I'm nobody, I'm nothing, I work a silly job. He said that he knows people, he has connections, he can change my life and ruin it," Holt said. Holt did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

The San Diego Harbor Police arrived at the marina 10 minutes after Thakore's yacht exited the dock, per CBS8.

The Harbor Police told Business Insider that Holt decided to press charges against Thakore and that they are investigating the incident.

According to Thakore's LinkedIn page , he's the CEO of Doctor Multimedia. The company's website shows that it's a healthcare marketing firm based in San Diego. Thakore appears to go by the name Ace Rogers on Instagram and TikTok, where he's noted as being a professional gambler.

Thakore, through his public relations team, told CBS8 in a statement that his altercation with Holt was "regrettable."

"What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange," the statement said. Thakore did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

Thakore isn't the only CEO who's been called out for threatening another person. In November 2021, an Activision spokesperson told BI that its ex-CEO Bobby Kotick had previously apologized for telling his assistant he would have her killed. The spokesperson added that Kotick's threat was "obviously hyperbolic and inappropriate" and that "he deeply regrets the exaggeration and tone."

In June 2020, Lisa Alexander, the CEO of LaFace Skincare, a cosmetics company, apologized in a statement to the media after she had threatened to call the police on her neighbor for writing "Black Lives Matter" on his property. Alexander said in the apology that she was "disrespectful" and "should have minded my own business."
