Boris Bakija (owner of the BALK company and captain of Adriatic King) is an engineering technician by profession, but seaman and captain by passion. He has earned certification to captain ships up to 500 brt.

Boris’s sea adventure began in 1989 when he went tuna fishing in the Pacific Ocean and spent the next 9 years at sea. Upon his return home, he started a new venture and began growing his own fleet of fishing ships. By 2015, he had 3.

In 2015, Boris and his business partner bought a small cruise ship, Adriatic Queen, which they still own. In 2017, he decided it was time to say farewell to his fishing boats and he sold them. He bought another small cruise ship, Equator, which sailed for his company BALK during the seasons 2017, 2018 and 2019.

At the end of season 2019, he sold Equator and began another era in his sea adventure. He started the construction of the new pearl in his crown, a new ship called Adriatic King which sailed for the first time on June 26th, 2021.

Boris always includes his family in his businesses. The company name, BALK, represents the initials of the Bakija family: Boris, Anita, Lovre and Katarina.

City Tours along the Croatia Coast

Embarking on a luxury ship charter along the Croatia coast offers a unique opportunity to explore some of the country’s most captivating cities. From the historic center of Southern Croatia in Split to the charming town of Trogir, each destination has something special to offer. Your clients can enjoy a city-walking tour in Hvar, known for its magnificent masterpiece of natural and human creation, or head to Sibenik and Krka Waterfalls to witness the stunning countryside. Select a destination below for more information to tailor your clients’ luxury cruise to their interests.

Below, we will highlight the must-see attractions in each city, providing inspiration and options for travelers seeking to explore the beauty of Croatia’s coast.

Located on a picturesque peninsula surrounded by the shimmering Adriatic, ancient settlements, and the gentle slopes of Kozjak and Mosor, Split is located at the historical, industrial, and geographical center of Southern Croatia. Its crown jewel is the palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian, built in the 4th century. Who would have ever guessed that it would become such an important site today, drawing visitors from around the globe? Split presents a rare convergence of Roman and Christian civilization and art. You can visit antique cellars that offer a glimpse into life in the palace in ancient times; the Cathedral, thought to be the oldest in the world, built on the remains of an early shrine; the Temple of Jupiter; and the Peristyle, the central square of the imperial complex. A pleasant stroll through the Roman streets Decumanus and Cardo to the famous Golden Gate will reveal the appearance of aristocratic palaces and medieval squares, as well as the ambiance of today’s Split, full of fine restaurants and shops. A visit to the gallery of our world-famous sculptor Ivan Mestrovic will reveal more of Split’s art, culture, and grace.

The charming town on the western coast of Kaštela Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized as an architectural masterpiece by our ancestors. A Greek settlement named Tragurion in the 3rd century BC became an important port during Roman times, located on a small island squeezed in between the mainland and the larger island of Čiovo. Today, Trogir is connected to the mainland by a bridge. Except for the green parks, the entire island is covered with spectacular structures: faded stone houses, palaces, churches, monasteries, towers, walls, etc. The cobbled streets are narrow, and they truly give a feeling of how life might have been in ancient times. You will see the main attraction in Trogir – the Cathedral of St. Lawrence. This 13th-century structure is probably the finest example of sacred architecture in Croatia. Its unusual construction with three naves and three semi-circular apses dominates the entire town. The main portal is world-famous, carved by the local artist Radovan in the 13th century. Other fine buildings to be visited are the Town Loggia decorated with stone carvings, including one by the great Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović; the Town Hall; and the Ćipiko Palace. The whole town is an open-air museum, so just taking a stroll through its winding streets will be an unforgettable experience.

Šibenik & Krka National Park

The Krka River is one of the most amazing rivers in the Croatian karst, and two out of the seven Croatian National Parks are a gift from Krka. On its way to the sea, it forms a chain of lakes, rapids, and waterfalls.

The first stop on this excursion is Šibenik, one of the oldest and most important Croatian towns, infused with the tradition of diving, coral fishing, and fishing. The drive there affords spectacular views of the islands and islets of the Šibenik Archipelago. Streets, stairs, squares, and narrow passageways are part of the open-air International Children’s Festival, unique in the world, which takes place every summer in Šibenik. You will visit one of Dalmatia’s most valuable religious monuments, the 15th-century St. James’s Cathedral, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and other renowned attractions. After the city tour and some leisure time, you will continue through the karst hinterland of Šibenik to the famous Krka Waterfalls. In Skradin, a small town located inside Krka National Park, you will enjoy breathtaking natural beauty by small boat and visit the largest limestone bedrock in Europe – Skradinski Buk. The falls cascade over 17 natural barriers, and this permanent play of the sun and water creates an astonishing scene. There will be ample time here for exploring and taking photographs of the stunning countryside.

Hvar is one of the sunniest and most beautiful of Croatia’s thousand-plus islands, a stunning masterpiece of nature and human creation. Situated at the crossroads of ancient nautical routes, Hvar is a cradle of history and culture. Its long coastline, mild climate, and numerous islands and islets make Hvar a true Dalmatian gem.

The town of Hvar bears the marks of centuries of human existence, but its special charm comes from the Renaissance period. Looking at Hvar from the seaside reveals the seven-hundred-year-old city walls, a promenade with palm trees, and a Venetian piazza built in the 16th century. The tour starts with a walk along stone streets to the 15th-century Franciscan Monastery where you will visit the impressive Renaissance cloister, the old refectory that today houses a collection of lace, manuscripts and books, and the church with its remarkable paintings. The guide then leads you to the main square to visit the Cathedral of St. Stephen, its treasury, and the bell tower with its distinctive Venetian mark. The next stop on your route is the Arsenal, an imposing building built in 1611. Inside, you will find Europe’s oldest community theatre established in 1612. After the guided tour, you can explore the town that has inspired many poets, writers, and painters on your own, try numerous specialties of Dalmatian cuisine, or swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic Sea.

The town of Zadar is one of the oldest towns on the Dalmatian coast. It maintained its independence for a long time before the crusaders destroyed it and delivered it into the hands of the Venetian Republic. Although it was challenging to live there amid the turmoil of ever-changing domination, today we are left with an impressive Old Town, architecturally influenced by both Croatians and Venetians. We will visit the Old Town, including the Church of St. Donat, the Cathedral dedicated to St. Anastasia, and the permanent exhibition of gold and silver sacral art. We will also view the Sea Gate, Land Gate, City Wall, and the Square of Five Wells from the outside. After the walking tour of Zadar, guests will have the opportunity to explore the city on their own before returning to the ship.

Dubrovnik is a stunning city with a glorious past. In the 16th century, the city developed its merchant fleet and became one of the strongest merchant city-states. The small, but powerful state called Dubrovnik Republic maintained its independence for 450 years.

Explore the Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is entirely surrounded by mighty walls and fortresses that are in impeccable condition. Our walking tour takes you through the elegant main street, Stradun, revealing amazing sights such as Onofrio’s Fountains, the Franciscan monastery with the old pharmacy, Orlando’s Column, the church of St. Blaise, the town’s patron saint, the main Cathedral, and more.

Experience the history and culture of Dubrovnik’s magnificent walled city by strolling around its narrow streets on this two-hour walking tour with a local guide. Starting at Pile Gate, you’ll walk along the elegant main street and visit the city’s most important sights. The tour begins with Onofrio’s Fountain, a circular fountain connected to a spring 7.5 miles (12 km) from town via an aqueduct. Next, visit the Franciscan Monastery, home to a restored sculpture of the Pieta and a stunning cloister dating back to the 14th century. The tour continues with a visit to Dubrovnik’s Renaissance highlight, the Sponza Palace, which now houses the State Archives. Other tour highlights include Orlando’s Column, the City Bell Tower, the Rector’s Palace, and the Church of St. Blaise. The tour concludes with a visit to Dubrovnik’s baroque Cathedral of the Assumption, built in the 18th century after an earthquake destroyed the original one, located in the main square.

The Island of Mljet is located near the Pelješac peninsula, which is part of the southern section of the Dalmatian Coast. Known as Croatia’s greenest and one of the largest islands, Mljet harbors a diverse range of Mediterranean vegetation, Aleppo Pine forests, as well as several paved foot and bike paths, and a variety of hiking trails.

Mljet National Park comprises the top third of the island. Here, the primary natural attractions are the two saltwater lakes, Veliko Jezero (Big Lake or Great Lake), and Malo Jazero (Small Lake), together covering approximately 4 square kilometers. Additionally, within Veliko Jezero, visitors will find a small island called Sveta Marija or Islet Melita, which contains a lovely 12th-century former Benedictine monastery called Crkva Sveta Marije. Below is a map that you’ll find near the entrance to the park depicting the entire park, with well-marked biking and hiking trails.

Spa/Wellness Recommendations:

  • Dubrovnik : Spa/ Massages: https://touchofthai-eu.business.site/
  • Split : Spa/ Massages: https://mediteraneum-massage.com/

Cell Phone and Wi-Fi The Adriatic King does offer free Wi-Fi. It works well and is stable especially when in port. We mostly communicate via “WhatsApp” and recommend downloading the app to your phone.

If you only need to charge phones, you can order this on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B41VPHG8/ref=ewc_pr_img_1?smid=A2N431DYIC8O3P&th=1

If you need to charge laptops, hairdryer, curling iron, you will need a power converter: https://www.amazon.com/International-Adapter-Converter-Straightener-Universal/dp/B07V81Q4XG/ref=sr_1_4

ATMs The easiest and best way to get cash in Croatia is from an ATM (Bankomat). The Cirrus (tel. 800/424-7787; www.mastercard.com) and PLUS (tel. 800/843-7587; www.visa.com) networks span the globe; look at the back of your bank card to see which network you’re on, then call or check online for ATM locations in your destination. Be sure you know your personal identification number (PIN) before you leave home and be sure to find out your daily withdrawal limit before you depart. Also keep in mind that many banks impose a fee every time a card is used at another bank’s ATM, and that fee can be higher for international transactions ($5 or more) than for domestic ones (where they’re rarely more than $3). On top of this, the bank from which you withdraw cash may charge its own fee.

General Tipping Etiquette in Croatia

Cafes, Bars, and Restaurants

Tipping etiquette in Croatia, as in much of Europe, is to round up your restaurant bill and leave an average of 10% tip. Of course, this becomes arbitrary if you really enjoyed your meal and service, feel free to tip more! At more informal locations such as cafes and bars, simply round up the bill, or add around 5-10%, whichever makes you most comfortable.

Hotel Staff

Tipping to hotels is not required. However, should you find yourself in a luxurious enough establishment to provide porters or house cleaners, a small tip of 5 EUR will suffice.

Guides & Drivers

Tour guides in Croatia are among the best in Europe. As such, tips for your guides should be strongly considered. If you are joining a shared group tour – such as a walking tour of Dubrovnik, or a day trip to Krka or Plitvice National Parks – all parties in the group are welcome to chip in around US (United States) $5-10 each, making up a tidy sum for the tour guide.

Taxis and Private Drivers

Private drivers – such as those provided on our exclusive private airport transfers before or after your cruise or tour – may expect a tip of around US $10-15 per day in service.

All taxis in Croatia are on the meter and tips are not expected. Please note, however, it is widespread practice to round up the fare by adding a couple of Euro primarily to avoid the hassle of loose change!

Tipping on the Cruise (suggested)

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I receive travel documents with instructions for the guests as to whom to expect at airports, and where to find their driver?

  • Yes, you will receive e-documents approximately two weeks prior to your travel date. The driver will have a sign that says IWorld of Travel and your guests’ names on it.

When are the transfers to the ship?

  • Transfers to the ship are included only on the day of ship departure from a local hotel or local airport. Transfers from the ship on the day of disembarkation are included to a local hotel or local airport. Any transfers arranged outside of these days or location can be arranged at an additional cost.

What is stocked in the cabins?

  • Each room is equipped with a hair dryer and small bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Guests are welcome to bring their own hair dryers or other electronics with an EU adapter/converter to plug in.

Is laundry service available onboard?

  • Unfortunately, it is not currently.

What credit cards are accepted in Croatia?

  • American Express is not as commonly accepted in Croatia. Some places do, but the safest option is Visa or Mastercard, or cash. Please note the ship also does not accept American Express.

Do I have a point of contact during travel should anything arise, and we need assistance?

  • This information is included in your final documents. IWOT has staff in Croatia. Also, your Cruise Manager is a great point of contact.

Are guests allowed to bring beverages onboard for consumption?

  • Unfortunately, no. The ship’s liquor license forbids that. However, if there is a specialty or specific type of alcohol your guests would like, please tell us ahead of time, and we can try to arrange for that to be stocked on board and provide a price for consumption. Please note that not all brands are available in Croatia.

When/how do we submit food and drink preferences/brands?

  • Ship owners have their suppliers for food and drinks. Preferences should be sent at least 2-3 weeks prior to departure. Please include that on the cabin/rooming list that you provide us.

What time are the meals served?

  • Breakfast is from 7:30-9:00AM. Lunch is 12:30-2:00PM. The Welcome Dinner and Captain’s Dinner are at 8:00PM but can be arranged with the captain to change the time.

What are the tipping guidelines?

  • Please find tipping guidelines in  the section above “ Recommendations and Local Info .”

How can I make a dinner reservation?

  • Your Cruise Manager and Charter Concierge have a wealth of knowledge and can assist with this. IWOT can also make reservations ahead of time as well. Especially if you have larger groups of more than 10, it is recommended to make a reservation. Otherwise, each port has a plethora of restaurants from which to choose.

How do guests get to their cabin?

  • The Cruise Manager or someone from the crew shows guests to their cabin, and the bags are taken directly from the dock.

What time does the bar on the ship close?

  • The bar is open from 7:00am-midnight+. The pool (if applicable) and jacuzzi stay open all night. And if guests are still awake, the crew does not close until done, or latest 2:00am.

What happens when guests first arrive on board?

  • The Captain and Cruise Manager will make a short presentation to introduce the crew and go over safety protocols of the ship, along with answering any questions.

Can people drop luggage early?

  • Yes, they can leave the luggage and enjoy being on the ship in the bar or in the salon. Cabins will be clean and ready from 1pm.

Can people leave luggage until 2pm (but check out early).

  • Yes, check out is until 10am and they can leave the luggage until 2pm.

Are there hairdryers in the cabins?

Is there shampoo, body wash, and lotion in the cabins?

  • Yes, shampoo, body wash, and lotion are provided in the cabins.

Is coffee, water, tea, and some snacks available for self-service 24 hours?

  • As everything is available at the bar and around the bar that means that coffee, tea, and snacks are available only while the bar is open and that would be from 07:00 until 24:00.
  • As for the water, there is a water dispenser at the back of the saloon on the outside, so water is available 24 hours.

Is the pool freshwater or saltwater?

  • Saltwater, filtered from the sea.

Is the jacuzzi freshwater?

  • Yes, the jacuzzi is freshwater and filtered by chlorine.
