Ariadne: Inside the 38m Breaux Baycraft yacht ready for auction

Lying in Fort Lauderdale, the 37.8-metre Ariadne (ex Bayou) has fallen on the auction block with bidding starting at a steal-worthy $1,500,000. 

Delivered in 1979 by Louisiana-based Breaux Baycraft , the 38-metre once lived a quiet life. She was owned by the same individual for her first nine years of service and has only had a handful of owners since. But in 2018, an extensive, multi-million dollar refit by Derecktor Shipyard shunted the 45-year-old vessel into the spotlight. BOAT takes a closer look at what hopeful owners can expect...

Accommodation for eight (including a "best in class" owner's cabin)

The yacht for sale has four cabins comprising an owner's cabin, VIP suite, double and a twin. The owner's cabin comes equipped with its own Jacuzzi bath, desk and settee, while the VIP cabin can be converted into a private study. A standout detail is the mosaic sole in the master cabin, crafted in marble, mother-of-pearl and gold-leaf glass.

Refreshed amenities and 1930s memorabilia

Inspired by the transatlantic ocean liners of the 1930s, Ariadne 's interiors incorporate original furnishings and service items from classic Atlantic liners – including the SS Normandie and RMS Queen Mary (also known as The Grey Ghost ). In the main saloon, two sofas and two armchairs are located in front of access to the aft deck, where al fresco dining is found.

Her interiors benefit from brand-new lighting, updated entertainment systems and internet services, while a refreshed galley includes a new five-burner Verona range with double ovens. 

A sociable sundeck with BBQ and Jacuzzi

Ariadne 's crown (and crowd-pleaser) is her sundeck, which now has a spa tub, wet bar, cocktail areas and a barbecue following her refit. Across from the grill on the port side is a high gloss table for 10 guests, mounted on double aluminium pedestals and with blue fabric cushions on the seating. The space is also arranged with a fully-equipped gym, including adjustable weights, two aerobic machines and two mountain bikes for exploring ashore. With three main access points, the sundeck "boasts the size, quality and features of a yacht three times the cost", according to the broker.

A three-level beach club (plus ample storage)

Found aft, the three-level beach club features covered dining, a lounge, and water-level access. She also has a capacious toybox that, in her charter days, included a 7.6-metre Sportsman tender, two Jet Skis, kayaks, paddleboards, inflatables and mountain bikes for exploring ashore.

The auction will take place from 22 to 27 February, with a reserve set at $2 million. Ariadne is to be sold with Jeff Shaffer at Superyacht Sales and Charter .

There are 5 beds in total, including 1 king, 2 queen and 2 singles. She is also capable of carrying up to 6 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht charter experience.

Performance & Range

Built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, she benefits from a semi-displacement hull to provide exceptional seakeeping and impressive speeds. Powered by 4 x John Deere engines, she comfortably cruises at 14 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 20 knots. With a shallow draft of 1.35m/4'5" Ariadne can anchor closer to coves and sheltered bays overnight. Ariadne features at-anchor stabilizers providing exceptional comfort levels.

She has character and has been used in numerous film shoots over the last 10 years.  She has made a trans-Atlantic crossing with her 9,000 gallon fuel capacity and walk-in freezer and walk-in refrigerator.  She has had over $1,000,000 in upgrades over the last 10 years.  Enchantress is an Aluminum hull yacht Built by Breaux Bay.  Breaux Bay builds work boats to take supplies to the oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.  The hulls are designed to handle heavy seas and carry a lot of cargo. The Flybridge is enormous, measuring 23' X 46'.  It has been the centerpiece of numerous film shoots. With the forward complete bar, the entertaining capability is fabulous.  Access to the Flybridge is AFT using a spiral staircase or forward with stairs to the Pilothouse.  Just FWD of the Flybridge is the Bridge House with more seating capacity.  The smokestack can be rotated down to clear bridges on the Great Loop.

The Bridge House is full beam with considerable seating AFT and to Stbd.  To port there is a stairway down to the Pilothouse.  There is an instrument cluster that can drop down and be hidden when not needed--see photos.

The AFT Salon is very bright with windows on both sides and AFT.  There are wing doors on etiher side to the catwalks.  Looking forward she opens into the massive Dining Room.  On the Stbd. side is the spiral staircase that goes up to the Flybridge and down to the Master and Guest Staterooms.

The Dining Room is full beam with large windows on either side. Forward to port is a swinging door to the Galley.  Forward to Stbd. is the hallway with the Day Head.

Moving Forward in the Companion Way, to Stbd is a Guest Stateroom with a queen berth.  Across to Port is a Stateroom with 4 bunks.  Forward of these are the walk-in refrigerator and freezer.  Forward all the way to the bow is the Crew's Quarters.

Breaux Bay Craft made a standard 100' Aluminum boat designed to service the oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.  The hull was designed to carry heavy loads in all kinds of weather.  So this is an incredibly sea worthy yacht and has made a trans-Atlantic crossing.  In 1968, 1969 and 1970 Breaux Bay made 12 custom personal yachts.

The commercial boat has 94,000lbs of AL. This one was has 120,000lbs. The commercial boat has a gross displacement of 100 tons. This one is 120 tons.

In 2008 Enchantress had the bottom taken down to bare Aluminum, barrier coated and new bottom paint.  She was also sounded and found to be fine.

ARIADNE is a traditional 124’ custom American motor yacht brought into the modern age. Inspired by the bygone era of luxury transatlantic ocean liners, she is a true classic yacht that exudes a relaxed elegance with thoughtful touches and an extraordinary attention to detail.

ARIADNE was constructed in 1979 by the renowned Breaux Bay Craft shipyard in Louisiana. She received a multi-million-dollar refit between 2018-2022 at the Derecktor Shipyard and Lauderdale Marine Center, where she was completely reworked structurally, mechanically, and aesthetically. 

She is characterized by her flag-blue paint, crimson and gold boot stripes, and her fresh cream superstructure. She features thick hull plating and a shallow draft, which makes her the ideal yacht for cruising locations such as the Bahamas.

ARIADNE boasts three separate exterior deck areas with a three-level aft deck. She features a spacious sun deck that has been expanded to four times the original size, making this the perfect spot to entertain friends and family. 

She can accommodate 8 guests in 4 staterooms. With interiors inspired by the transatlantic ocean liners of the 1930s, ARIADNE is adorned with marble floors, fixtures, and sconces, gold and brass touches throughout, Art Deco bronze outlet plates, and custom artworks.

Equipped with four John Deere 650hp engines, she can reach a top speed of 15 to 20 knots and a cruising speed of 10 to 14 knots. Her two generators were completely rebuilt in her recent refit.

A sanctuary featuring the brand-new, full-beam master stateroom with lounging, work, and dressing areas, a sumptuous queen cabin, and an elegant convertible twin/king cabin. Each is coordinated with color and textiles to its own ensuite bathroom with individual custom mosaics.

ARIADNE's rich interiors provide a refined and luxurious ambience. From the original cherry and burled maple paneling to beautifully handcrafted stonework, ARIADNE features thoughtful touches and inspiration from the bygone era of transatlantic liners, exuding an unmatched level of elegance and authenticity.

Warm cherry paneling, cabinetry, and columns are combined with new custom furniture and antiques. ARIADNE's salon also showcases contemporary style for a truly unique space. The room's focal piece on the forward wall, an illuminated specially-commissioned, etched mirror featuring an image of the famous statue from Antiquity of the Greek goddess Ariadne, pays homage to the yacht's namesake while bringing natural light into the center of the room.

With service items of silver, crystal, and custom gold-rimmed French china patterned after the first class service on the SS Normandie, dining on board ARIADNE captures the essence of traditional trans-Atlantic elegance. A sanctuary of grace and serenity, the master stateroom features book-matched cherry paneling, a king bed, plush custom furniture, including a cloud-like velvet soda and a vintage chrome art-deco desk lamp (optional), and elegant finishes. The custom desk chair is copied from the originals on the Queen Mary. The bathroom flaunts a stunning hand-laid mosaic floor of marble, gold leaf, and mother of pearl, a large spa tub, a separate shower, and exquisite French crystal Lalique faucets.

With a main deck VIP queen that is convertible to a private study with desk, a large convertible twin/king, and a large queen cabin, ARIADNE offers luxurious space, style, and comfort for every guest.
