With 29 islands, 661 cays and nearly 2,400 islets, The Bahamas is a true sailor's paradise steeped in both history and lore.

The island group lies at 25 degrees 5 minutes north latitude and 77 degrees 21 minutes west longitude. This is where Italian explorer Christopher Columbus first made landfall in the New World on October 12, 1492, where pirates built a haven in the 1600s, and where many British loyalists made new homes following the American Revolution.

Dream Yacht Charter's Bahamian base is located on Great Abaco Island at Marsh Harbor, and serves as our gateway to the stellar sailing grounds the islands offer.

The Abacos chain is formed in a boomerang shape and stretches nearly 130 miles from Walkers Cay in the north, to Hole-in-the-Wall in the south. The islands lie roughly 175 miles east of Palm Beach, Florida, and 106 miles north of Nassau. The outer cays and islands create naturally protected waters commonly referred to as the Sea of Abaco. Abaco is the second largest island in the Bahamas, and generally cooler than the other islands. Summer temperatures average 26.5°C/80°F to 29.4°C/85°F. During winter, the temperature rarely dips below 10°C/50°F.

More than 200 species of birds, including the Green Bahamian Parrot, are found in the islands, along with lush vegetation such as Pines, Madeira, and Coppish, as well as astonishing ferns, vines and varieties of wildflowers like Oleander and Stalked Orchids.

The five inhabited cays of major importance are Walkers Cay, Green Turtle Cay, Great Guanna, Man-O-War and Elbow Cay.

Green Turtle Bay has an uneven coastline with deep bays, sounds and delightful beaches at Gillam Bay and Coco Bay. The island is three miles long and half as wide. The community is diverse, and captures the quaint and harmonious atmosphere found throughout the islands.

Hope Town is known for its boat building and was founded by British loyalists in 1785. It boasts many fine examples of British colonial architecture, such as Toad Hall, which was built in 1880 and restored in the mid-1970s, and Butterfly House. The British Imperial Lighthouse Service sought to build one of its signature "candy stripe" lighthouses here to mark the Elbow Cay Reef in the 1860s. Local residents opposed the lighthouse, however, because they viewed it as a direct threat to their salvage trade. The lighthouse was built despite this opposition, and began operation in 1863. Now, it remains one of only two manned beacons, and local residents have undertaken vigorous efforts to keep it so, going to extraordinary lengths to secure spare parts for the light apparatus, most of which are no longer made.

A tribe of Arawaks, the peaceful Lucayans, first inhabited the Bahamas, arriving there in the early 9th century to escape the warlike Caribs. Columbus, searching for a shorter trade route to India, first made landfall in the Bahamas on an island he called San Salvador in honor of his patrons, the king and queen of Spain. In the mid-1660s, Pirates such as Henry Jennings and "Blackbeard," or Edward Teach made the town of New Providence a sanctuary when they weren't plundering ships on the high seas. Britain finally took firm control in 1718 and created a new motto for the Bahamas: Expulsis Piratis – Restituta commercia, Latin for Pirates Expelled – commerce Restored.

When Loyalist refugees began arriving after the American Revolution, they infused the Bahamas with both wealth and an entrepreneurial spirit that thrives to this day. During the American Civil War, the islands served as a safe harbor for blockade-runners and privateers exchanging Southern cotton for weapons and supplies. And during Prohibition, Americans flocked to Nassau where they could drink legally and gamble at casinos. More than 300 years of British rule ended in July 1973 when the Bahamas officially became a new nation, the Independent commonwealth of the Bahamas.

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. It was not an easy job for Andrew, as I am an experienced boat builder and owner of previous yachts, but work in West Africa. Imagine how hard it was to communicate what I was looking for. Andrew came up with exactly what I wanted. He dealt with time delays, all my questions at odd hours, and was there for the survey. He reported honestly and professionally. After buying the yacht, I arrived at the boat on a Sunday night, after dark, after travelling from West Africa to the Caribbean, and found it was better than expected. He never pulled punches and made me aware of shortfalls. I expected to spend my one month leave working on the boat, but actually spent less than one week, and was able to spend 3 weeks sailing – wonderful bonus.

S/V Panta Rhei is a 2012 Custom Custom Roake Guenter 50 catamaran, for sale by owner. The design concept for Panta Rhei was formulated in 1981. We wanted a fast sailing catamaran with comfortable but minimal accommodation capable of cruising the oceans of the world and at the time couldn’t find anything that suited our needs. The design and construction of Panta Rhei was an evolution that occurred over a number of years and involved a cast of naval architects, a variety of construction methods, what at the time were cutting edge technologies and the development of novel approaches to implementing the smooth working of all components.

Panta Rhei has been our only home since 2014 and part time prior to that. While we never did sail the oceans of the world as hoped, we cruised extensively from Nova Scotia to the Bahamas and throughout the Caribbean. During that time, Panta Rhei proved her sea keeping abilities, potential for speed and ease of handling. She is a capable world cruiser and all that has prevented us from venturing further afield is our advancing maturity.

The classic Leopard 45, also known as the Moorings 4500, was designed by Simonis Voogd and built by Robertson & Caine in South Africa. The Leopard 45 has robust shaft drives and skeg protected rudders making it well suited to cruising in remote areas.

S/V Blue Iris is a 2019 Lagoon 40 catamaran, for sale by owner. She has been in charter in BVI for past 5 years minus 2 years during the pandemic. Regular maintenance with yearly hauling out checked over and bottom paint. Priced to sell in BVI.  Once we bring her to the US, the price will be much higher.

The 40 is endowed with enhanced performance. The larger sail plan than other Lagoon models ensures a better sail surface/displacement ratio, making the 40 a fast and seaworthy boat. The decision to move the mast further aft, arising directly from VPLPs experience in racing, has many advantages. For ease of handling, the 40 has a self-tacking jib and a shorter boom. For more performance, the 40 has a large foretriangle offering a greater choice of foresails and a high-aspect mainsail, enabling use of less disturbed air higher up.

On deck, space and comfort are combined with a new aft cockpit layout like that of the 42. This space is open to the sea, with a dining table to port that can accommodate up to twelve guests, a relaxation area on the same side, and a seat on the aft crossbeam. The ergonomic helm station can be accessed from the cockpit or the deck, affording continuous communication between the helmsman and the rest of the crew. M/Y Vieux Carré is a 2022 Aquila 44 Yacht catamaran, for sale by broker. The most Attractive Market Price for this boat. Replacement Value 1,650,000 USD. Owner version, Owner boat, never chartered for sale in the Caribbean. The boat is fully loaded and has little use and low engine hours. 

She is loaded with Twin 320HP Volvo engines, a Generator, a Watermaker, an Air Conditioning Interior, and at Flybridge.  Engines were observed running during sea trials. Started easily and ran adequately, topping out around 3560 rpm on port and 3510 on starboard (engines are rated for 3500). Speed was 19.5 knots; the fuel burn rate was 32 gallons per hour. At 3000 rpm cruise, speed was approximately 16 knots with a fuel burn rate of 21 gallons per hour.

S/V ARIES is a 2014 Fountaine Pajot Helia 44 catamaran, for sale by owner. Already equipped with every conceivable option ex works, we have continuously improved and maintained our ARIES.

The boat is in optimal condition, perfect to get in and start sailing. Large batteries, new solar cells with almost 1.5 kW peak, large water tanks and a Schenker water maker guarantee a high degree of self-sufficiency. A Victron MultiPlus 12/3000 inverter enables the washing machine, induction hob, iron or hairdryer to be operated from the many existing 220V sockets.

Crowther-Alwoplast 47 (Caribbean)

S/V Krabby Patty is a 2002 Crowther designed 47′ Catamaran, built by Alwoplast, for sale by owner. Alwoplast has built many of the Chris White Atlantic catamarans. The boat is very well and strongly built with vacuum bagged Divinycell foam core and Vinylester Resin used throughout. All bulkheads are glassed and vacuum bagged, with unidirectional fiberglass. Her twin daggerboards provide excellent sailing performance and shallow draft when necessary. List of items updated in the last 18 months below.

She has very bright and open salon, with large windows a comfortable settee, and galley up. The port owners hull, has a head aft with separate stall shower, next forward is a powder room, forward of that is a queen size berth, with a large closet all the way forward. S/V Cocoloco is a 2016 Lagoon 52F catamaran, for sale by owner.

After 20 years experience as a Lagoon dealer, I made this catamaran perfect for sail and live on board. I removed many electronic complications such as Dometics, Yanmar engines, electronic injectors, and electronic fuel pumps. They are now without electronics. Engine controls are mechanical, no more electronic Micro Commander.

After I repaired several boats with electronic damage for lightning or magnetic field, I saw that they remain in the sea without any possibility to start the engines, without electronics, with the need to be towed into port. So I decided to fix my Lagoon 52 that is much more safe now. The catamaran has been completely renewed in 2022 and is ready to go.

Lagoon 450F Owner’s Version (Caribbean)

S/V The Rabbit Hole is a highly sought-after and wonderfully maintained 3-cabin Owners Version 2015 Lagoon 450F catamaran for sale by owners and has NEVER been in charter.

The Rabbit Hole has a custom-built enclosed fly bridge, which the navigation of the vessel can be done at the helm or inside at the chart station with second electronic throttles and full instruments. A newly painted antifouling bottom including the sail drives and props (2023). There are upgraded 54HP Yanmar engines, and a generous sail inventory. To be totally self-sufficient she features an Onan generator along with a 1200W solar power and water maker, plus full 48,000BTV A/C throughout. The bulkheads have been inspected and certified intact by Lagoon.

Lagoon 450F (Antigua)

S/V Dreamy is a 2015 Lagoon 450 Fly Bridge catamaran, for sale by owner. We are ready to sell our lovely dream boat: S/V Dreamy. She is the perfect boat for a full time liveaboard family and it’s ready to sail around the world.

Bulkhead inspected and reinforced with Lagoon parts (and extras) for above standards, Onan Generator, AC (5 units), Water maker, New Manta Anchor 105lb (45kg), New B&G Radar (all B&G instruments), 05 new Solar Panels, New 4 lithium batteries, new child safety net and trampoline net to be installed, etc.

Dreamy is fully equipped and self sufficient to live aboard as we cruised the Caribbean with a family of 5 for the last 2 years. The galley accessories, bed mattresses, complete tools box set and extra parts will be included.

Prout 45 (Caribbean)

S/V Mirounga is a Grenada Islands based 1997 Prout 45 Catamaran for sale by owner. Mirounga is the ultimate liveaboard cruising machine. She is solid fiberglass under the waterline, cored above the waterline, with Kevlar reinforcement. The original Prout Catamarans are renowned for their safety, load-carrying capabilities, reliability, ease of handling and comfort, and were designed for long-term live-aboard cruising and ocean passages.

Mirounga was owned by her original owner until 2021. She’d been well taken care of and was ready to go – the second owners (2021-2022) made a few improvements along the way to make her even better. They lived aboard very comfortably for a little over a year before returning back to land-life.

Mirounga has been upgraded with an Echotec 13gal/h Watermaker and 915W Victron Solar, both in 2021.

S/V Vitesse is a Panama based 1989 Lagoon 55 catamaran for sale by owner. The Lagoon 55 is a large, modern, performance cruising catamaran and one of the best-looking catamarans ever built. They are one of many cruising catamarans designed and built by Jeanneau (JTA, Jeanneau Technique Advances). The designers were Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot Prevost who used their knowledge of offshore racing and the latest racing sailboat design technologies to produce a cutting-edge cruising catamaran. This 3 cabins, 3 head owner’s version has had an extensive Refit, and has been lengthened to 60 feet long.

The Lagoon 55 affords it’s crew and passengers lavish accommodations inside and outside. She is spacious, light and well ventilated. She offers excellent all-around visibility from the deck, cockpit and saloon. The cockpit affords comfortable seating for at least ten people.
