Turkey Gulet Cruise Review (& Everything You Need to Know!)

Turkey Gulet Cruise Review (& Everything You Need to Know!)

Planning a trip to Turkey and want to explore the Turkish Riviera by gulet? In this Turkey gulet cruise review, I share all about my experience on a luxury gulet cruise in Turkey and everything you need to know about planning your own gulet cruise along the Turkish Riviera!

A few years ago, I did a week-long gulet cruise along the Dalmatian coast in Croatia . While planning that trip, I learned that gulet cruises are also very popular in Turkey — where the gulet boat is originally from!

And last summer, I was able to experience a wonderful week on a gulet boat on the beautiful Turkish Riviera on my very first visit to Turkey.

Here’s my full Turkey gulet cruise review, plus what you need to know about chartering a gulet on the Turkish Riviera!

Aerial view of the gulet boat

What is a Gulet?

A gulet is a type of traditional wooden sailing vessel that originated in Turkey and is commonly used for leisure cruising in the Mediterranean Sea.

They typically range in size from 45 to 115 feet in length and have two or three masts, although some larger ones may have four or more.

Gulets are designed to provide a comfortable and relaxing sailing experience, with spacious decks for sunbathing and dining, as well as cabins for sleeping and private bathrooms. They often have a crew that includes a captain, chef, and other support staff to cater to passengers’ needs.

Also, gulets are typically made of wood and have a distinctive shape with a wide, rounded hull and a flat bottom. Usually, they are fitted with both engines and sails and can be propelled by either.

Popular for cruising along the coastlines of Turkey, Greece, Croatia, and other Mediterranean countries, gulet yachts are often chartered by groups of friends or families for vacation trips.

About the Turkish Riviera

The Turkish Riviera, also known as the Turquoise Coast, is a stunning stretch of coastline in southern Turkey in the eastern Mediterranean that is known for its crystal-clear waters, beautiful beaches, and picturesque towns and villages. The region encompasses the provinces of Antalya, Muğla, and Aydin and is a popular tourist destination for both domestic and international travelers.

The section of coastline that is considered the Turkish Riviera is quite big — starting roughly from Çeşme (near Izmir) in the west, all the way east to the city of Antalya. To give you a sense of how large the Turkish Riviera area spans, it would take you about 10 hours to drive if you took the coastal roads!

It’s known for its turquoise waters (hence the name!), charming towns, historical sites, stunning natural landscapes, and islands that dot the coast.

Some of the islands off the coast — called the Dodecanese islands — are actually Greek islands (like Kos and Rhodes) so you could easily visit both Turkey and Greece in one trip!

Popular Destinations on the Turkish Riviera

The size of the Turkish Riviera can be a bit overwhelming if it’s your first time planning a visit!  Let’s break down some of the best places to visit on the Turkish Riviera:

The largest city on the Turkish Riviera, Antalya is known for its historic old town, known as Kaleiçi, which is filled with narrow streets, traditional architecture, and historic landmarks such as the ancient Hadrian’s Gate . The Antalya region is also known for its gorgeous beaches and is a popular destination for gulet trips!

Often said to be one of the most charming towns, Kas (also written Kaş) is in the Antalya region but is about 3 hours from the city of Antalya. One of the main attractions of Kas is its beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters. The town is surrounded by stunning natural scenery, including the Taurus Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, making it a perfect location for outdoor activities like swimming, diving, and hiking.

The town is surrounded by stunning mountains and beaches and has a beautiful harbor, making it an ideal base for exploring. The famous Blue Lagoon , located in the nearby Oludeniz beach, is a must-see attraction and a great place to relax and swim in the clear blue waters. The area is also known for its ancient sites and ruins, the most famous of which is the ancient Lycian city of Telmessos, which dates back to the 5th century BC.

Another popular province on the Turkish Riviera, Mugla is known for its vibrant nightlife, beaches, and turquoise waters. Bodrum is one of the most famous towns in Mugla and is renowned for its marina, castle, nightlife, luxurious hotels and trendy beach clubs. Marmaris , another popular destination in Mugla, is famous for its long sandy beaches, bustling marina, and picturesque old town.

While Aydin is a less well-known province on the Turkish Riviera, it’s still worth a visit. It is home to the ancient city of Ephesus , which is one of the most well-preserved ancient cities in the world and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The province also has plenty of pretty beaches and quaint coastal towns like Alacati .

While these are some of the major destinations on the Turkish Riviera (especially for gulet trips), there are countless other little towns and things to do on the coast. I’ll go into more detail on what we did with our week-long trip below!

Why Charter a Gulet Cruise in Turkey?

Chartering a gulet in Turkey is a popular way to explore the beautiful coastline and turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea — because of this, it’s been nicknamed the Blue Voyage. There are several benefits to traveling by gulet that make it an appealing option for many:

Ease & Convenience: Since you’re on a boat, you won’t have to do any driving or planning logistics to get from one destination to the next. You just sit back, relax, and you’re already at your next fabulous destination! Generally, gulet trips have a pre-planned itinerary so you won’t need to stress about what’s next on the agenda. Also, since you’ll have many of your meals onboard prepared by your friendly crew, it takes the planning work out of where to eat.

Water Activities: Honestly, this is probably my favorite thing about being on a gulet and it’s a real benefit if you’re a pisces and love being in the water like me! I love being able to just jump in the water and go for a swim at any point in the day. There’s also typically plenty of water sports on board like snorkeling, paddle-boarding, kayaking, diving, jet ski, and tubing.

Large Groups: Gulet boats are generally pretty large so they can sleep quite a few people. This makes it a great way to travel with private groups like a large gathering of family or group of friends. Plus, when you’re all on one boat, you get plenty of quality time together!

Budget: There are definitely some luxurious gulet boats that you can splurge on… but, often times, Turkish gulets can be a pretty affordable way to travel. When you add up hotel rooms, car rentals, travel and dining costs, chartering a gulet can sometimes cost less than your typical trip! This is especially true when you’re splitting the costs with a large group.

How to Charter a Turkey Gulet Cruise

With a quick Google search, you’ll see that there are plenty of private gulet charter companies out there — Blue Cruise and Goolets are popular ones (just to name a few!). It’s best to reach out to a couple of highly-rated charter companies with your trip requirements and see what gulet charters they can offer you.

Here are some things to keep in mind when planning a gulet cruise in Turkey:

Choosing your gulet: There are many gulets available for charter in Turkey, ranging in size from small vessels that can accommodate a few people to larger boats that can hold up to 20 or more passengers. When choosing your gulet, consider factors such as the size of your group, your budget, and your itinerary.

When selecting a gulet boat, some of the things you may want to consider are:

  • Build & refit years: some gulets can look brand new while others may be in dire need of a refit!
  • Speed: this often impacts the route as with faster boats, you can cover more ground.
  • Air-conditioning: Some boats have A/C that works great, some boats have A/C that is just on for a few hours a day, and some don’t have A/C at all… which can be brutal for sleeping on those hot summer nights!

Water-sports : It’s good to know if the boat is equipped with paddle boards, kayaks, snorkels, etc. or if there is an additional charge to have these on board.

Crew: Most gulets come with a professional crew that includes a captain, chef, and other support staff. The crew members will take care of everything from navigating the boat to preparing meals, allowing you to relax and enjoy your cruise.

I would also recommend asking your charter company if they have worked with the captain of the gulet in the past and what you can expect. I think it can be helpful to know if your group will be communicating with the captain directly and if he/she is flexible with itineraries!

Cost: The cost of chartering a gulet in Turkey can vary widely depending on factors such as the size of the boat, the length of your trip, and the level of service you require. Be sure to discuss your budget with your gulet charter company to find a boat and itinerary that works for you.

Planning your itinerary: Turkey has a wealth of stunning destinations along its coast, from bustling cities to remote coves and islands. When planning your itinerary, consider the places you want to visit, the length of your trip, and the activities you want to do, such as swimming, snorkeling, and exploring historic sites. Will you want your itinerary to be one way or round-trip? Will your departure and destination ports be near airports that you can fly in and out of? All great things to consider while planning your itinerary!

Anchoring vs. Marinas: Will the gulet be anchored in a secluded bay overnight or parked at a marina… or a bit of both? Depending on your preference, it’s a good question to ask before you finalize your trip!

The Best Time for a Turkey Gulet Cruise

Summer is definitely the peak season for cruising along the Turkish Riviera. The weather is sunny and hot — temps often get up to 95° F in July and August!

The shoulder seasons of May to June and September are an ideal time to visit because the weather is still warm but there aren’t quite as many crowds as in high season. Temperatures are still in the 80s during the day but can dip down to the 60s at night so you may need a light sweater.

I visited in mid-September and couldn’t have asked for better weather. It was warm and sunny (but not too hot!) and the sea was perfectly refreshing. Along the coast, the towns were still bustling but we didn’t have any issues crowds!

Breakfast on the gulet boat

Dining on a Gulet Boat

Dining experiences on gulet boats will vary based on the boat, the chef, and your group size — since making meals for smaller groups can be more customizable than feeding a large group. Typically, the chef is local to the country where the charter takes place so guests can expect authentic cuisine and fresh, local ingredients.

One of the best parts about our gulet boat experience was getting to enjoy authentic Turkish cuisine in stunning settings all along the coast!

Steps down to the Aegean Sea in Bodrum

My Turkey Gulet Cruise

For our group of six people, we chartered a 30-meter gulet with 5 cabins for 7 nights beginning in Gocek and ending in Bodrum. However, a few weeks before our trip, the charter company let us know that there was an issue with our gulet boat and it was no longer available. Instead, we got upgraded to a 36-meter gulet, named Babylon with a crew of 6… so, definitely not the worst news to be upgraded to a bigger boat!

We let our charter company know our preferences for our meals and itinerary – we wanted to prioritize secluded swimming coves with just a few “must visit” spots. Once we had everything planned out, we were ready to set sail!

Destination Highlights from the Turkey Gulet Cruise

Since our gulet cruise began in Gocek and ended in Bodrum, we flew into Dalaman Airport which was just 25 minutes from Gocek, and out of Milas–Bodrum Airport.

Over the next seven days, we were able to experience some of the best places on the Turkish Riviera including quaint towns, stunning beaches and picturesque islands.

Here are some of the top destination highlights from my Turkey gulet cruise!

Harbor view of Gocek, Turkey

Gocek (written Göcek in Turkey, and pronounced go-chek) is a beautiful town located on the south coast of Turkey, about half an hour from Fethiye. It is situated between the Mediterranean and the Taurus Mountains and is known for its crystal-clear waters, and charming marina.

Since we arrived in Gocek the night before our gulet trip, we were able to explore the town’s bustling marina.

Gocek’s marina can accommodate over 700 boats so it’s a popular destination for boaters from all over the world!

The town has tons of restaurants to chose from with a range of delicious Turkish and international cuisines. And, there are lots of shops so you can grab any last minute items you may need for your trip — from swimsuits and clothing to towels and pool floats! Plus, there are plenty of grocery markets and wine shops so you can stock up on anything you’ll need for the boat.

Gocek Hotels

Looking for the best hotels in Gocek? Here are my top picks!

  • D Resort Gocek : If you have some time to spend at your hotel in Gocek (a least a day or two!), this luxury hotel is an excellent pick! With a gorgeous beach club, swimming pool, and spa, you’re guaranteed to have a luxurious and relaxing time at D Resort Gocek.
  • Hotel Marina Bay Göcek : Just planning a quick stay in Gocek before your gulet trip? Hotel Marina Bay Göcek is a great and convenient option that’s right on the marina! Guests loved the comfortable, well-appointed rooms and the view of the marina from the balconies.
  • Rixos Premium Göcek : I really wanted to stay here after I came across some photos of their stunning beach club on Instagram! However, they were fully booked and required a minimum 2 night stay. (Their minimum stay varies based on time of year though, so it could still be worth looking into for your trip!). This luxury hotel is all-inclusive and features a private beach, making it a great option for families or groups to enjoy Gocek for a few nights.

Lycian Rock Tombs in Dalyan, Turkey

Dalyan is a small town situated on the banks of the Dalyan River, which flows into the Mediterranean sea. The town is very picturesque with sweeping river views and stunning mountains in the backdrop!

And, Dalyan offers plenty of things to do. One of the most famous sights is the Lycian rock tombs that are carved into the cliffs overlooking the town. Nearby, visitors can bathe themselves in mud that is said to have therapeutic properties for the skin — I know my skin felt buttery soft afterwards!

Since we were coming from the gulet boat, our crew organized a private river cruise for us on the Dalyan River. Our little river boat picked us up directly from our gulet and we got to stop at Iztusu Beach on the way, which is a protected nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles.

Once in Daylan, we had a great day taking in the views, exploring the town, and soaking in the mud baths. We also had a wonderful lunch at La Boheme , where we met the friendly owner and got to dine with views of the Lycian rock tombs!

Aegean Sea in Bozburun, Turkey

The Bozburun Peninsula is a fairly untouched and rugged region that is home to stunningly beautiful beaches, secluded coves, and little islands. The area is perfect for hiking, swimming, and exploring, and offers sweeping views of the Aegean Sea and the surrounding islands. On the other hand, the small town of Bozburun is a popular starting point for the “Blue Cruise,” a traditional Turkish sailing adventure that takes visitors along the coast of the Aegean Sea, stopping at different towns and islands along the way.

We opted to spend the day near a little island off the coast of Bozburun and had a fabulous time snorkeling, swimming, paddle-boarding and relaxing. We loved this area for it’s incredibly clear and calm waters!

Beach Club at La Guerite in D Maris Bay

D Maris Bay

D Maris Bay is a luxury resort located on the Datça Peninsula in southwestern Turkey, near the town of Marmaris. It is situated on a hillside overlooking the Aegean Sea, and offers stunning views of the surrounding coastline and islands.

→ Book a Stay at D Maris Bay

The mega resort is also home to a yacht club, spa, and several beach clubs and world-renowned restaurants.

The resort’s flagship restaurant, Nusr-Et Steakhouse, is famous for its high-quality meat dishes (and is owned by internet personality, Salt Bae!), while the Zuma Beach Club offers Japanese and Asian fusion cuisine, and Manos serves traditional Greek food by the sea.

We made a reservation at La Guérite, a restaurant and beach club serving French and Mediterranean cuisine that also has locations in France.

The restaurant has a buzzy vibe with a DJ and cabanas along the beach. We absolutely loved the beautiful beach, delicious food (hello, truffle pasta!), and overall fun atmosphere.

Sunset view from the beach in Datca, Turkey

Similar to Bozburun, Datca (written Datça in Turkey, and pronounced daht-cha) is both a small town and a peninsula. The area is known for its unspoiled beauty, with lovely beaches, crystal-clear waters, and rugged hillsides covered in pine forests. Datca also has a rich history, dating back to ancient times. The town is located near the ruins of Knidos, an important center of trade and culture in ancient Greece, and there are several other ancient sites in the area, including Loryma and Kastabos.

The charming town of Datca is home to seaside restaurants, shopping, and weekly markets where locals sell fresh produce, crafts, and other goods. The markets are a great place to experience the local culture and buy souvenirs to take home.

Floating in the sea off Kara Ada Island near Bodrum, Turkey

Kara Ada Island

Kara Ada is a small island located off the coast of Bodrum, one of the most popular resort towns in southwestern Turkey. The island feels very untouched since there isn’t much development on it (unlike nearby Bodrum!) and it offers plenty of opportunities for swimming, sunbathing and snorkeling.

We spent the day in Aquarius Bay which is honestly one of the most beautiful bays we saw. The bay had such crystal clear water that it felt more like a swimming pool than the sea!

View of the marina and Bodrum Castle in Turkey

Bodrum is a large resort town on the Turkish Riviera that is known for its history, natural beauty, beach clubs, nightlife, and shopping.

The town is home to the ruins of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, as well as several other ancient sites, including the Bodrum Castle, which was built by the Knights Hospitaller in the 15th century.

Bodrum is also known for its vibrant nightlife, with plenty of bars, nightclubs, and restaurants. The town is particularly popular with younger crowds, who come to party and dance until the early hours of the morning.

For those looking for more of a relaxing visit (like me!), there are a number of resorts outside of the hustle and bustle that offer private beach clubs, spas and restaurants.

Tips for Visiting the Turkish Riviera on a Gulet Cruise

After spending a week on a gulet boat, I have a couple of tips to make your trip as smooth as possible:

Bring cash: You’ll want to bring some cash to tip your crew at the end of your trip. We found that there were a few ATMs throughout our stops but definitely not many so I’d recommend coming prepared!

Cell Service: Some boats have WiFi on board but I’ve found that it can be very spotty. Also, there were some areas where we found we didn’t have any cell service so we weren’t able to access the internet. I would recommend downloading music playlists and kindle books in advance. Or you could disconnect completely and pack physical books, games, etc to keep you entertained during downtown on the boat!

Underwater view of the Aegean Sea on the Turkish Riviera

My Turkey Gulet Cruise Review

Overall, I absolutely loved spending a week onboard a gulet boat to explore the Turkish Riviera and would highly recommend it.

Turkey’s incredible natural beauty surpassed my expectations and I loved how, being on a boat, we were able to explore secluded coves and hidden islands that we otherwise would probably never get to visit! Spending our days swimming, snorkeling and paddle-boarding was a highlight for me — as I love being in the water.

One thing that did surprise me was how remote and untouched much of the coastline was. Most of the towns we visited were sleepy yet quaint (expect for Bodrum and Gocek!). While this was a positive for me — I felt like we got to disconnect and enjoy nature — it may not be for those who prefer an action packed trip.

If you’re looking for a relaxing week to spend with friends over good food and wine, with plenty of sunshine, swimming, and the unmatched beauty of the the Turkish Riviera… then this could be the perfect trip for you!

Luxury Guide to Exploring The Turkish Riviera

Sharing is caring!

Ok, y’all! Have you heard of a Turkish Gulet? If you’re dreaming of a holiday or vacation on a stunning stretch of the Mediterranean coastline, look no further than sailing on a beautiful luxury ScicSailing Turkish Gulet.

A luxury cruise from SCICSailing Turkey Gulet departs via Bodrum, Turkey which is one of the most stunning destinations I’ve ever visited and I almost dare say Bodrum, Turkey is more beautiful than the Amalfi Coast.

I know! I know! When you think of Turkey you think of the hot air balloons and caves of Cappadocia but Bodrum is for grown folk with money not for Millenials pretending to be wealthy.

Bodrum, Turkey, is known as “God City” because most of the Greek Gods were born here. Bodrum is an under-the-radar luxury travel hotspot that’s been compared to Saint Tropez and Mykonos by both Business Insider and Forbes.

The port city has been dubbed the “St. Tropez of Turkey” for its luxury yachts that sail around the Mediterranean, luxury hotels, beach clubs, food scene, and the abundance of superyachts drifting in its turquoise waters.

The city is located on the Bodrum Peninsula on Turkey’s southwest coast, on the shores of the Aegean Sea about an hour flight from Istanbul or a three-hour flight from Munich to Bodrum.

Now, that I have introduced you to Bodrum I know you must be asking yourself what exactly is a Turkish Gulet?

A Turkish Gulet is a traditional mostly wooden sailing vessel and the average size can vary from 70 to 100 feet in size offering 4 to 8 cabins depending on the length of the boat.

These cabins can accommodate between  6-16  people (sometimes more on special gulets).

It’s impossible that you’ll get bored!

Best Turkish Gulet Charter Company

There are many Yacht charters in Turkey or Turkish gulets to choose from and renting one can be difficult because it’s hard to decide which one is perfect for you but the staff at ScicSailing will help choose which gulet is right for your family.

The luxury cruise we chartered departed from Bodrum on a traditional Turkish Gulet named “The Nemesis 2.”

While Europeans have been vacationing in Bodrum for years, American travelers have long overlooked Bodrum for the overcrowded and touristy destinations of Cappadocia, Mykonos, and Saint Tropez.

ScicSailling’s mission is to put Bodrum on the map for Black American Tourists and hosted its first-ever all-Black Press Trip with 10 content creators from all over the world!.

Chances are when you think of a Turquoise Coast, beautiful sunsets, and luxury sailing, Turkey doesn’t exactly come to mind but I am here to change that so keep reading, check out my Instagram feed of the stunning pictures I was able to capture.

ScicSailing allows you to explore ancient ruins and small coastal villages, experience authentic Turkish cuisine, and Jeep adventures, tour an olive oil farm, along with supporting local people by buying fresh produce and trinkets at the local market.

The city of Bodrum and The Turkish Riviera is one of the most ridiculously picturesque and low-key travel destinations in the whole world.

The Best Time to Charter a Turkey Gulet from ScicSailing

Although temperatures are warmer and better for swimming in the summer months, chartering a luxury yacht or cruising the Turkish Riviera in mid-May or early June before the heat and the crowds kick in will ensure you will have a better experience.

Leaving Tennessee for the beautiful Turquoise waters in May, we were greeted with warm days, cool nights, bright blue skies, and very little humidity.

While the waters were still slightly chilly, most of us still went paddleboarding, kayaking, swimming, or simply lounged on the deck soaking up the Mediterranean sun.

ScicSailing

The Best Luxury Yacht Charter for Sailing Turkey

Scicsailing yachting & cruising.

To capture the real essence of the Aegean Sea and the glorious unspoiled Eastern Mediterranean you must try a boutique sailing cruise offered by ScicSailing , which understands the art of experiential travel on this spectacular part of the Mediterranean coast.

A sailing cruise aboard one of their traditional ‘gulet’ yachts (fully crewed, so you can just lie back and relax) offers the freedom to discover the delights of the Turkish coast without meeting the crowds.

This is the luxury vacation you didn’t know you needed.

Sailing on a Turkey Gulet is a discreet, intimate way to travel, perfect with a group of friends (all Black Press trip for me) or for a multi-generational family holiday or vacation.

The Turkish Gulets offer both double and twin cabins and while they are certainly compact all eight have a private ensuite bathroom with shower, washbasin, and small windows that offer views during the day of the intensely blue sea and unspoiled coast, or star-filled skies by night.

I rarely spent any time inside my cabin because the views were simply too beautiful to be cooped up in a cabin.

With  ScicSailing , expect to have your senses intoxicated by the beauty of the Turkish Riviera; the flavors and aromas of the local cuisine; and the kindness of the local people.

Before you keep reading I must warn you a week sailing along the Mediterranean Rivieria will not feel nearly long enough as I really did not want to return home.

Imagine a romantic or seductive holiday where you are lulled by the warm breeze and the inky blue waters of the Aegean Sea. Relaxation embraces every cell of your body.

You instinctively unwind, and enjoy the moment, leaving your mundane worries back in the states.

There will be unforgettable excursions to destinations you’ve probably never even heard of like Kindos, Cleopatra’s Island, and Seven Island.

Yet often the most lasting memories are the magical moments created or curated by the superb crew – and of course, for me, most of these were all about foodie experiences onboard and I know y’all will find this hard to believe but I feel in love with tomatoes.

Turkish tomatoes are so sweet, crisp, and full of flavor they were really unlike any tomato I have ever eaten in the states and I really don’t have the words to fully describe how tasty they were but I ate them with every single meal!

Turkish Breakfast with ScicSailing

One of the best things about gulets in Turkey is the curisine.  Eating breakfast each morning with my fellow content creators while enjoying fresh fruit and veggies each morning where we reflected and counted our blessings.

Every morning we gathered on the deck and a plethora of authentic Turkish cuisine was provided to prepare us for the day ahead.

From eggs, peppers, spices,  baskets of Bazlama flatbread, and Turkish tomatoes which became my staple with every single meal because Turkish tomatoes are unlike anything I have ever tasted.

Plates of cheeses; and scarlet roasted peppers, drenched in olive oil contrasting with freshly chopped cucumbers. Homemade relishes and rich dark local carob syrup-filled saucers; sage honey dripped from its golden, waxy comb.

The yacht was filled each morning with the aroma of strong Turkish coffee – what a delight for the senses!

Mediterranean Lunch & Dinner aboard “The Nemesis 2”

Lunch was always just as delicious as dinner from the olive oil, pine and fig jams that lined a long wooden table. Fresh-grilled fish, shrimp, rice, tomatoes, cucumbers, and zucchini filled our tummies daily.

Authentic Turkish dishes are freshly prepared by the chef, who before each feast explains the menu in great detail.

Long, leisurely lunches like this aboard the ScicSailing cruise are what makes this adventure so special.

After Dinner Turkish Delights & Cocktails

What more do you really need after dinner and relaxing under the warm Mediterranean sun? Snacks and cocktails of course.

Thankfully, all onboard snacks and meals, drinks, and cocktails are included so drink and eat until your heart is content.

Dinner aboard Scicsailing

Access to Secluded Beaches & Coves

Once you take to the waters of the Aegean Sea, you have privileged access to hidden coves and secluded bays that are almost unreachable by any other means.

With a crew of four, and ten guests for our excursion we were able to swim in secluded coves, meet locals, and unwind for 7 days while creating epic content for Instagram.

In addition to Captain Ergün, you are provided a personal chef (Chef Sezer) and two sailors (Sailor Koray and Sailor Sinan who took complete care of us.

The two sailors are in charge of housekeeping, maintaining everything ship-shape along with assisting both the Captain and chef when needed.

7 Day Flexible Itinerary For Sailing in Turkey

We spent 7 days sailing the Turkish Riviera. My pace was slow and relaxed, the wifi was weak which forced me to detox from social media and from checking my email every 5 minutes.

It is the break we all need and chartering gulets in Turkey to explore Turkey can easily be done in 7 days but again I must warn you it will be hard to go back to the rat race of everyday life.

Whether it’s taking in the Mediterranean sun on the deck, reading a book seated close to the bow, chatting at the bar, or snoozing on the sofa in the wheelhouse there is something for your entire family.

Day 1 – Cleopatra’s Island

On our first-day sailing Nemesis docked at Cleopatra Island. Cleopatra Island (Sedir) is a very beautiful promenade region. The island is situated very close to the port of the Camli village.

According to the legend, about two thousand years ago, Mark Antony gave his beloved and future queen Cleopatra an island. The beauty turned out to be quite capricious, and she did not like the sand that is on the beaches of this island.

Then the then emperor Mark Antony ordered the delivery of special sand from North Africa, which was done. According to this legend, it was on the beaches of this island that Antony and Cleopatra spent their nights full of passion and love.

The sea here, without exaggeration, is crystal clear: the bottom and scurrying fish are visible at a depth of up to 9 feet, and this is far enough from the coast since the entrance to the water is shallow.

Not very far from the beach, there are the ruins of the city of Sedra, where Cleopatra and Mark Anthony spent time together.

After exploring Cleopatra Island we got settled on the Turkish Gulet and changed clothes for the welcome dinner on this beautiful luxury gulet which included authentic Turkey dishes and cocktails 🛥

On our first night on our private Turkey gulet cruise from Bodrum, there was a full moon and eclipse in Turkey and all I can say is WOW!

Imagine watching the night stars twinkling and the beautiful full moon reflected in the ocean, a sight I will never forget.

Cleopatra's Island

Day 2 – Knidos Antik Kent – Datça Archeological Site

Datca Peninsula is the hidden heaven of Turkey and also the home of the Knidos Ancient City which offers 4000 years of history.

If you are looking for a place where you can see historical places while cruising the Turkish Rivieria, the ancient city of Knidos is the answer.

Knidos Ancient City is famous for its statues built for the Dionysus, Athena, and Aphrodite.

Because of the geographic properties of Knidos, the city was built step-by-step and there were terraces on each step and the Dionysos terrace is one of them.

The second one is Liman avenue. From the starting of the 4th BC, Knidos started a new type of urban planning system. Based on these systems they built seven avenues from north to south and they merged with one main avenue from west to east.

Liman street is the first one of the north to west avenues. Also, there is a chapel at the west of Liman street which should be seen.

You will also find the remains of the  Karneios  Karneios Karneios  at the middle terrace located at the intersection of the West to East avenue and Liman Avenue.

It is possible to see the Altar and other structural remains of the  Apollon Karneios Temple .

One of the great things about ScicSailing is the wealth of knowledge that was bestowed upon us was truly amazing.  I learned Noah’s Ark landed on the hills of Mt. Ararat, a dormant volcano near the east border of Turkey. Who knew?

I thought I was well versed in history but I was blown away to find out the British can’t grow tea. WTF! Most of the leaves that go into our teabags do not come from India, China, or Britain but are bought from an auction in the coastal city of Mombasa in Kenya or Turkey.

Day 3 – Sailing to 7 Island

On day three of our seven-day itinerary, we explored 7 Island. ScicSailing luxury yacht cruises usually stop at Seven Island which is a secluded bay south of Tuzla.

It is a great place to do nothing or be active by swimming, snorkeling, fishing, and diving. As long as you are careful, you can try harpooning and perhaps even catch dinner?

A natural gulf is created and we were able to anchor even though the winds were blowing. To the west is the island of Martil, to the south and east, there are lovely beaches where you can swim, relax or sunbathe.

The other islands are Long Island, Olive Island, and Small Island; each is virtually barren.

Day 4 Sailing Turkey

Y’all know a yacht full of content creators we had to spend the day taking epic and I do mean epic Instagram photos that will have everyone flocking to the Turkish Riviera.

Please follow all of the content creators on Instagram that I had the pleasure of spending 7 days cruising the Turkish Mediterranean with:

Bodrum will now become home to Beautiful Melananited travelers moving forward because we are about to put the Turkish Riviera on the map!

Check out some of our dope images and don’t forget to follow these dope ass creators who I had the pleasure of exploring the beautiful Mediterranean waters of Turkey.

Day 5 – Oren Village Turkish Market

Ören is a pretty little  seaside resort set on a thin stretch of shingle at the point where the relatively flat coastal scenery of the Bodrum area bumps up against the more spectacular mountain scenery of Akyaka and Marmaris.

The vibrant market offered loads of beautiful local produce that was so vibrant in color that it was almost like there was a filter on my eyes.

If you want to really experience the culture of Turkey this is a must-visit for some valuable time with the locals to not only better understand the culture but also support the local economy.

There are farmers from the village who bring in their vegetables, olives, olive oil, dry beans, tarhana (dried soup mix), tomato paste, and other homemade foods.

I purchased fresh fruit, and spices, and tasted local delicacies like Turkish Rice Pudding, Baklava, Tulumba Tatlısı, and Turkish Almond Cookies. fresh produce.

A great travel experience.

Make sure you follow the Oren Village Turkish Market on IG.

Day 6 – Jeep Safari, Vineyard & Olive Oil Tour with Lunch

Jeep safari excursion with Difference outdoor can only be characterized by two words “adventure” and “fun”. And no matter how you combine them “a fun adventure” or “adventurous fun” that is what the Difference Outdoor jeep safari is about!

The jeep safari will give you a great opportunity to switch from a “lazy” mode to a more active and fun day with your crew.

Imagine the wind blowing in your hair as you cross the region from the highest point on the Turkish peninsula, You’ll have so much fun off-roading through the beautiful Peninsula, climbing over rugged roads, and exploring stunning landscapes of pine forests with countryside views.

View this post on Instagram                         A post shared by Tomiko Harvey | Diversity in Travel Advocate (@tomiko.harvey)

The first stop on our Jeep tour was a water reservoir called “turtle lake.” The turtles are protected in this small lake and they know when tourists are there because when I tell you within 1 min of arriving at turtle lake there were hundreds and I do mean hundreds of small turtles surrounding us.

My husband became known as the turtle whisper because somehow they flocked towards him and he fed the turtles by hand.

Next on our Jeep Safari tour was the Garavo Vineyard.  Nestled in a bowl-like cradle in mountainous the winery grow vines of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Shiraz, and Zinfandel.

This 200-year-old, family-owned winery produces over 10,000 bottles of domestic wine a year.  We had the pleasure of tasting a Shiraz. They grow Zinfandel and Shiraz for wine production and for grape 🍇 consumption

Follow the Garavo Vineyard on IG

Garavo Vineyard Turkey

Our next stop on the Jeep Tour was visiting the Bekiroglu Olive Oil Farm.

Here at the Bekiroglu Olive Oil farm, you will find a timeless landscape dotted with olive trees and unique white-domed water cisterns used for collecting rainwater.

This family-owned  Olive Oil Factory has been producing olive oil for four generations and offers tours and tastings that share both the history and culture of their journey.

If you love Olive oil this is the perfect place t o sample Turkish olive oil straight from its source.

The last and final stop on our Jeep Tour was an extremely personal experience for me.  We visited a Wishing Tree which is an individual tree that has been chosen specifically and is used as an object of wishes and offerings.

Such trees are identified as possessing a special religious or spiritual value.

As I was en route to Turkey by beloved furbaby Riley experienced Kidney failure and there was nothing I could do halfway across the world.  My daughter Madison who is 15 had to take Riley to the vet where he stayed for 5 days.

I stood in front of the Wishing Tree and said a prayer for Riley and hoped he would recover even though my furbaby passed away I am still grateful for the opportunity to have prayed for his health and recovery.

Wishing Tree in Turkey

Day 7 – Breakfast in the village

If you ever get to experience a Köy Kahvaltısı  (village breakfast), especially with a group of friends, the meal can last for hours and feature dozens upon dozens of Turkish specialties.

On our last stop with ScicSailing, we experienced exactly that at Etrim Doğa Restaurant & Köy Kahvaltısı , located in a tiny, traditional Turkish village up in the hills about a 40-minute drive from the main city.

The meal is cooked by the sister of Engin Başol, who owns the attached Etrim Turkish Carpet cooperative with his father.

In Etrim, you are served a fabulous, traditional, Turkish village breakfast with the warm and generous Turkish hospitality that you will never forget.

There’s no menu, and the dishes keep coming one after the other from the kitchen. Plus, we all sat in a circle on the floor while listening to stories of the village and learning about the culture.

Y’all know my favorite dish had to have tomatoes.  The Ezme is a delicious spread of tomatoes, onions, peppers, and herbs with a red pepper paste. Spread a generous dab of this on some freshly baked bread and your life will forever be changed.

I also enjoyed the fresh tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, black and green olives, spicy green peppers, and Turkish cheeses.

After enjoying the traditional Turkish breakfast we toured the carpet store which offered some of the most beautiful Turkish rugs, shawls, kilims, and dresses that the local women make in order to earn money and preserve the local traditions such as carpet weaving.

I was amazed by how many Turkish carpets and kilims fill each and every single room. They are stacked on top of each other or rolled up in corners, on the floor, or on a bench.

The bright colors and different patterns are astounding. I purchased 5 shawls and 2 throw pillows for my sofa and if I wasn’t already worried about space I would have purchased another for four or five items.

Conclusion: ScicSailing Luxury Turkey Gulet Review

Each yacht in the SCIC Sailing fleet is an authentic Turkish ‘gulet’ sailing yacht. Each with elegant lines, immaculate decks, and impressive rigging.

The focus is on ‘chic’ cruising through the wondrous blue waters, close to Turkey’s unspoiled south-western coast. ScicSailing maintains the essence of classic blue cruising since they are one of the few fleets that continue to genuinely sail, instead of continual motoring.

Once experienced, it becomes clear that nothing can substitute for the feeling of freedom one feels when the motor is off, and the yacht catches the warm wind.

Sadly, in a 7-day itinerary, you reach little of the vast length of coastal Turkey. Whatever your vision for your next vacation the staff at ScicSailing can help make your dream vacation a reality of Sailing around the Turkish Riviera.

Sailing in Turkey: A Complete Guide to a Gulet Cruise Along the Turkish Riviera

Towns to visit along the Turquoise coast on Our Sailing tours Fethiye Both thrilling and tranquil, this is one of the resort towns in the Turkish Riviera that you will return to again and again. As being one of the most popular destinations on the Turkish Riviera, Fethiye is also the largest town in Muğla province, is the meeting point of the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts. Fethiye is one of the biggest ancient cities in Lycian civilization which is also known as Telmessos. Today, Fethiye is one of the main hubs on the Turkish Turquoise coast where famous Turkey sailing trips start or end. Turkey sail is also known as blue cruises Turkey or Blue voyages Turkey . Every year Fethiye accommodates thousands of Turkish gulets as well as private yachts and superyachts in her 2 huge harbors. People from all over the world are choosing Fethiye for their sailing holidays in Turkey . Fethiye with her stunning bays and coves all around offers amazing stops for travelers with Turkish-made traditional gulets . The turquoise water in the tranquil bays is passionately loved by all sea enthusiasts. As soon as you start your blue cruise holiday in Fethiye you will start enjoying the vibrant turquoise sea against the hills. Butterfly Valley Located about 25 km West of Fethiye, Butterfly Valley is the first destination on our blue cruise holidays which is an exceptional earthly paradise. It boasts a natural setting with no establishment. Butterfly Valley is a valley of 2 large looming mountains that drop straight into the turquoise waters down below. The beach has become a popular spot for backpackers from all over the world to come over and stay at the campsite That’s why you may often see tents pitched and plenty of people lazing about along the beach. There no land access to Butterfly Valley, however, it is accessible only by boat. Butterfly valley is also a place where all the blue cruise tours stop on their route to Kekova .

Oludeniz / Blue Lagoon Oludeniz, also known as the blue lagoon, is definitely one of the most famous beaches in Europe. This stunning beach is voted as the most beautiful beach in Europe twice. It really is a beautiful stretch, but as with many gorgeous beaches around the world, it certainly attracts crowds and is pretty touristy. One of the most popular activities to do in Blue Lagoon is paragliding! Every year, over 60.000 people from all over the world come to Oludeniz for a jump-off baba mountain which makes it no 1 spot in the world. We can help you to arrange a jump-off during your blue cruise holiday You depart from the center of Olu deniz in a minibus with all of the paragliding kits and crew on board. Oludeniz is also the starting point for the Lycian Way, one of Turkey’s most iconic hiking trails. In Oludeniz , there are also some great bars and cafes to enjoy some time in if you don’t feel like paragliding. Kaş Kaş means eyebrow in the Turkish language and when you check the map of the area, you can easily understand why. Kaş is a picture-perfect town on the Turkish Mediterranean coasts. If you are after a warm Mediterranean atmosphere you are definitely at the right place. Kaş has all the right elements in hand; phenomenal sea view, narrow cobblestone streets with whitewashed houses, tempting restaurants and cafés, and bougainvillea of course. And while this is quite enough to be felt in love with, we can also add pretty beaches, and a picturesque harbor to complete the Mediterranean vibe. This area is also known for fantastic diving and many dive operators run trips straight from Kaş. You will have enough time in the town to try out Scuba diving as an optional tour on our Turkey sailing trip . You can enjoy fantastic cocktails at Mumi Cafe Beach which is 200 meters away from the harbor. This beach bar has an awesome atmosphere during the day, and we would highly recommend it. Kekova The next stop along the coast is Kekova, Kekova has a unique historical attraction which is lying under the water today; the famous Sunken City. Once It was a huge port city to both Lycian and Roman civilizations, the ancient city was mostly abandoned by inhabitants when an earthquake happened in the 2nd century AD which resulted in most of the city was sink into the water. The city is mostly submerged, however you can still see underwater ruins on the shores thanks to the clearest water of the Turkish Mediterranean. In some places on the island, some defensive walls and ruins from basilicas with some rock tombs are still visible This is a no walk, no diving zone since it is an archaeological site But many boats do sail past every day slowly to take in the incredible sight. You can see rooms, staircases, and doorways above the sea level, as well as make out pathways and more rooms under the water level. Luckily the water is completely transparent, Kaleköy and Simena Castle Simena Castle, also known in Turkish as 'Kalekoy' meaning 'castle village', is located on a stunning Turkish riviera in Kekova Region. Once it used to be a Lycian settlement, the castle remains largely intact upon a hill overlooking Kekova island. Kalekoy is the only Turkish village in the country which has no land access inspite of being on the mainland. The only access to the village today is by boat which keeps the island as it has been there for centuries. Today on our sailing Turkey trips it is one of the highlights especially on Olympos-Fethiye tours where we stop and explore the ancient castle and eat a lot of homemade organic ice cream. In the west of the town, a series of rock-cut tombs are scattered across the slopes of the castle. Olympos

the final spot along the Turquoise Coast to visit is the hippie town of Olympos . It is unspoiled heaven for especially young travelers , backpackers , flashpackers who love to enjoy nature, historical sites, partying in cozy places, sunbathing, swimming in the turquoise waters of the Turkish Riviera . located 90 kilometers from Antalya. It is a stunning spot to start or finish Turkey sailing trips . Olympos is an ancient city that was founded in the Hellenistic period, sharing its name with the nearby Olympos beach. Olympos was one of the 6 biggest cities in Lycian Leauge. Olympos was later invaded and ruled by the Cilician Pirates until the city was captured by the Roman Empire around 78 BC. Olympos can either be a really cool escape from the hustle and bustle in big tourist attractions of Turkey, staying in cozy treehouses, or a more active stop with Turkey sailing boat cruises, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing. Olympos is located along the Lycian Way which is shown in the top 10 hiking destinations in the world with a 500-kilometer marked hiking trail between Fethiye and Antalya. A Quick Guide to Budget Gulet Sailing in Turkey for Backpackers

gulet cruise on turkish riviera

You won’t find a better way to explore Turkey’s Turquoise Coast than from the decks of a gulet (a traditional wooden boat). But did you know you can experience a blue cruise like this on a backpacker’s budget? You can sail the stunning Turkish Riviera from Fethiye to Olympos on a 4-day cabin charter from just $260. That’s crazy cheap.

Imagine this…

Watching a display of shooting stars as you drift off to sleep, no noise but the waves lapping against the side of the boat. Waking up to the sunrise in a secluded cove, to the smell of pine and herbs and honey. Padding barefoot along the deck, bracing yourself for a dive into water that sparkles like gemstones. Afterwards, you plot the day’s adventures over a breakfast spread of tomato, cheese, cucumber, olives, coffee, bread, and jams.

The catch? For the cheapest prices, you’ll have to share a boat and can expect the facilities to be basic. Oh, but it’s worth it though.

Read on to discover why.

WHY TAKE A FETHIYE-OLYMPOS BLUE CRUISE

I used to be scared of the sea .  One of my first memories is of being on a ferry aged 3, afraid to go anywhere near the guardrail. My mind boggled at how anyone could think boats were safe.

A gulet cruise in Turkey converted me.

It was an ex’s idea. We were in Fethiye , heading for Olympos on the Turquoise Coast on the south-west of the country. A backpacker’s haven with treehouses and beach-side ruins, it has drawn hippy types for decades.

The scenic coastal route to Olympos would take a few days and a few buses. But in Fethiye, we discovered that a 3-night cabin charter on gulet cruise could take us along the same route.

This stretch of coastline isn’t the easiest to explore by road. Many of the villages and bays along this coast were inaccessible to road traffic until the 1970s and, despite the new highways, there are still many parts that are difficult to access by car or public transport.

What better than to drift lazily between them on a boat?

A cabin charter is where you rent a room on a boat with other travellers (I use the word ‘room’ loosely). Once I learned the price, I was sold. With food and accommodation costs factored in, it wasn’t much more expensive than making our own way there.

Any fears I had of water were quickly dispelled once I strapped on a snorkel mask and jumped into those crystal clear turquoise seas. The food was as good as a restaurant, but with a much better view.

It wasn’t long before I was a convert to travelling by boat.

WHAT IS A BLUE CRUISE?

Gulet sailing in Turkey refers to a type of  sailing charter in this southwestern corner of Turkey, typically week-long liveaboard trips along the stretch of coast from Bodrum to Antalya with an emphasis on enjoying the nature as much as the sights and towns.

Gulet cruises in Turkey are also commonly referred to as a ‘ blue cruise ‘ or ‘ blue voyage ‘. Same thing.

The gulet cruise industry is popularly credited to Cevat Sakir – the Fisherman of Halicarnassus  – a writer who was exiled to Bodrum in 1925.

He fell in love with the simplicity of life and beauty of the area, often taking his literary friends out on sponge-diving boats when they visited. Several books were published about these trips, and before long fishing boats had been converted for the tourists seeking the same experience.

WHAT IS A GULET?

A gulet is a type of traditional Turkish wooden motor sailing vessel, originally used for fishing and sponging. If you’re wondering how to say ‘gulet’, it’s pronounced more like ‘goo-let’ than ‘gull-et’.

Although gulets do have sails, you can expect to motor cruise most of the time. Since gulets became popular for charters, adaptations have been made to the design to make it more comfortable for living aboard but less suitable for sailing. They have roomy decks with plenty of space for al fresco dining and sunbathing, and are wide and stable vessels.

The downside of motor cruising is the engine noise. And if you’re looking to learn how to sail, this is not the trip for you.

But if you want to experience life at sea for a few days and explore the coast by boat then gulet sailing in Turkey is great fun and great value. Turkey isn’t the only place in the Mediterranean you can gulet cruise; similar vessels have cropped up in Croatia and Montenegro, but this stretch of coast is the spiritual home.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON A CABIN CHARTER

Most boats offering cabin charters have around 12 passengers and 3 crew, although some party boats cram on more than that. Your meals are provided on the boat and there’s ample room on deck for lounging around, sunbathing, playing cards. A bimini provides shade and protection from the sun. You’ll spend most nights at anchor, hanging out with your fellow passengers, although there are opportunities to link up with other boats if you feel like it (particularly at the infamous Pirate Bay disco). It’s a great way to travel for singles, although you find plenty of couples and friends on the cabin charters too.

The cabins on budget boats are tiny and unlikely to have (working) A/C, meaning it’s more comfortable to sleep on a mattress on deck. If privacy/air-conditioning/showers are more your style then check out more expensive voyages with higher spec boats.

Typical stops between Fethiye and Olympos include:

  • Butterfly Valley

Other hubs where you can start/finish a gulet cruise are:

  • Rhodes (for Greek islands)

The sunken ruins at Kevoka from a gulet

HOW MUCH DOES A GULET CRUISE COST?

So you think sailing’s just for the super-rich? That’s what I thought too. Having grown up inland with no particular interest or experience of watersports, I’d never given sailing a moment’s consideration. I assumed that it was out of my budget and didn’t see the appeal.

Until I tried it.

Cabin charters are the best way to try sailing on a budget

  • Cabin charters are shared trips where you rent a cabin rather than the whole boat
  • Itineraries tend to be fixed
  • It’s a great way to meet people if you’re travelling solo
  • Worried about sharing a small space with strangers? Gulets are spacious compared to standard cruising yachts

What’s a typical price for a gulet cruise?

The cheapest rates I’ve seen online for 2018 are around the  € 200 mark for the 4-day Fethiye-Olympos route, which tends to be the cheapest option. The higher the price, the better the facilities on the boat. 7-day itineraries start at around €3 00 .

When comparing operators it’s wise to check what’s included. Some allow you to bring your own booze, which can make a difference to your budget if you’re bringing the party spirit. Otherwise alcoholic drinks are sold on board.

Kaş and Kalekoy from the water

BOOKING A CABIN CHARTER ON A GULET

If you’re travelling in peak season (July/August) you should consider booking in advance in order to secure the itinerary/boat that you’re after. That said, there is plenty of competition so it’s not strictly necessary.

The benefits of booking when you’re already in Turkey are that you’ll be able to compare operators, get a sense of the other passengers and crew, and potentially negotiate a lower price—particularly in shoulder season or if you’re travelling solo and hope to avoid paying the dreaded single supplement.

Some people like to party more than others, so talk to the operators to find the boat that’s the right fit for you. Find out who else has booked, make sure you know what’s included in the cost, and don’t forget to check out online reviews.

Things to bear in mind:

  • You will be sharing a small space and basic facilities with strangers
  • Expect to sleep on deck under the stars, it’s too hot in the cabins unless you’re splurging on a luxury boat with A/C
  • Hangovers at sea are an awful thing

Speaking of hangovers . . .

How to avoid a party boat, if that’s not your scene:

  • The cheaper the voyage, the more likely it will be full of party animals who have lined the freezer with booze
  • Particularly so in the university holidays – July/August
  • Fethiye-Olympos (and the reverse) tends to be the cheapest route and most popular with backpackers and young travellers
  • Check the ages of other passengers when booking

Olympos beach

I loved the gulet cruise experience so much that I brought a group of friends back the following year.

It wasn’t my last sailing experience either, since then I’ve gone on to sail on a tall ship around the Balearics , crewed on a classic yacht, and been a volunteer crew member on the Phoenician Ship Expedition around Africa.

What the Trip is Like

We have several hikes during the trip, 2-4 hours each, all with some uphill and downhill walking. Several hikes are of moderate difficultly, following coastal paths that can be steep and rocky. Even if you choose not to participate in the optional hikes, most visits to archaeological sites require walking or hiking on sometimes rocky, uneven paths. Having at least one hiking pole can be very helpful on the hikes as well. For your enjoyment of the trip, you should make a special effort to be in good physical condition by engaging in a regular exercise regimen before the trip, and bring lightweight hiking boots

The spacious gulets have shaded aft and fore decks with chaises provide comfortable outdoor dining and lounging. Full air conditioning is available as an option, but the Cavurali's natural ventilation is usually sufficient even during hot mid-summer days (many trip members enjoy sleeping out on the deck under the stars for fresh air, as the locals do).

Four ocean kayaks (three single, one double) are available on board for exploring secluded coves and marine caves.  A sailboard is also provided. To maximize time for exploration, we normally proceed under motor power. When conditions permit, and at the captain's discretion, sails will be raised. The Cavurali has a crew of three.

This is not a luxury cruise aboard a big cruise ship, but it's easy to adjust to yacht life, and we think you'll find this to be one of the most pleasant and relaxing journeys imaginable.

Meals on board have a wide variety of meats, fruits, and vegetables produced in Turkey and the bounty of fish in the Mediterranean, the Turks have developed a sumptuous and rich cuisine, influenced by its position as a cultural and geographical crossroads between Asia and Europe. We enjoy Turkish cuisine at its best aboard our yacht. In fact, for some trip members, meals on board become as much of a trip highlight as hiking and discovering ancient ruins!

Breakfasts include fresh yogurt, local honey, fresh-baked breads, eggs, and Turkish breakfast items such as feta cheese, olives, and sun-ripened tomatoes and cucumbers. Lunches and dinners offer an array of appetizers, a variety of salads and vegetable dishes (eggplant in olive oil is a favorite), plus a main entree of lamb, beef, chicken, or fish, grilled, baked, or prepared in other styles. Main dishes are often served with side dishes such as rice pilaf seasoned with currents or pine nuts. Some days, our crew fishes and serves us their “catch of the day.” Desserts include fresh fruits or assorted local pastries such as baklava (nuts and honey in puff pastry).

Thanks to the balmy Mediterranean climate, we enjoy our meals in the open air of the yacht's deck, sitting around a large table under a shade awning, with the fragrant breezes blowing. On occasion, we eat a lunch or dinner at a local town we are visiting. Wine, beer, and sodas are available for purchase. You can run a tab for your drinks and pay at the end of the cruise in Turkish Lira, Euros or US Dollars (credit cards are not accepted on the gulet). Complimentary drinking water, coffee, and tea are provided.

Being able to swim is important on any boating trip, and the warm waters make this an ideal trip for those who like to swim and snorkel. While there is some snorkeling equipment available on board, we cannot guarantee the quality and the fit of the equipment. We highly recommend bringing your own snorkel and mask to assure a proper fit. To get on and off the boat, there is a gradual 45-degree incline on the suspended sea ladder that allows easy access. The dinghy can take up to five guests at a time and has an outboard engine.

For trips with less than seven group members, the yacht we use is the Cavurali, a classic 65-foot, single-masted yacht with beautiful handmade teak hull and decks that is ideal for this type of journey. The Cavurali features four comfortable cabins with beautiful mahogany paneling and private bathrooms (two cabins have single beds and two have double beds). All cabins have en suite facilities, including a shower stall, and there are marine windows that open. Linens and towels are provided, including beach towels for swimming. We suggest you pack light because bunk and luggage space aboard is limited. There are 220-volt electrical outlets in the bedroom and bathroom (you will need a plug adaptor with two round prongs), plus an outlet in the salon that supplies power around the clock for charging batteries; it's a useful source when the generators are not on.

For trips with more than seven group members, a larger six-cabin yacht is used. They are generally about 90 feet in length with a 21-foot beam and are similar to the Cavurali in that they feature teak hulls and decks and mahogany interiors. All cabins have a private toilet and shower.

Sailing in Turkey: A Guide to a Gulet Cruise Along the Turquoise Coast

Sailing in Turkey along it’s Turquoise Coast is a magical way to spend a holiday in this beautiful country.

Stretching from the bustling port of Fethiye, to the resort town of Antalya, this coastline has been dubbed the Turquoise Coast for its twinkly blue warm seas. Backed by mountain ranges for almost its entire length, their slopes drop precipitously down to quaint fishing villages and the coastal highway which twists and turns with the coast. Lush pine forest, sandy beaches and sheer cliffs add drama, and the hundreds of tiny secluded coves and bays are tucked away, only accessible by water.

The most popular way to explore the Turquoise coast is by sailing, and the traditional wooden gulet cruise boat is a fantastic and authentic way to do this.

If you’re looking to spend long, lazy days onboard a typical Turkish boat, with glorious weather to boot, then a sailing trip in Turkey is for you. I recently spent three nights on board a gulet, sailing from Fethiye to Olympus, near Antalya with Alaturka Cruises enjoying a sailing trip along the Turquoise coast, on the route often referred to as the ‘blue cruise’. I tucked into delicious fresh seafood, explored ancient ruins, enjoyed drinks in lively fishing ports and jumped into the warm, calm seas for three days, and it was just brilliant. So here’s my guide to the Turquoise Coast, including how to choose a company to sail in Turkey with and what to do in each port of call. Enjoy reading and have fun planning your own sailing trip to Turkey!

Sailing in Turkey – Essential Things To Know

sailing in turkey

How to get to the Turquoise Coast

Depending on which direction you want to sail in, you need to fly to Fethiye or Antalya. Turkish Airlines and Pegasus both fly domestically from Istanbul and several other Turkish destinations to these seaside ports. You can also reach these towns by bus or train, which you can read more about in my guide to using public transport in Turkey.

From the UK or other European destinations, in the summer months (April to October), many airlines fly to Fethiye or Antalya and you should be able to catch a good deal.

When is the best time to go sailing in Turkey

For prime weather conditions, the peak summer season from May to September is best. In these months, the crowds do swell but the weather is best and you can almost guarantee long, sunny, hoy days – perfect for sailing trips in Turkey!

best time to go sailing in Turkey

How to choose a company for a Turkey sailing trip

It might seem a little overwhelming as so many companies offer gulet cruises in Turkey. For two day or longer trips, I would definitely recommend Alaturka Cruises . I found them online in advance of my visit. Not only did they have excellent reviews online, but their email support beforehand was brilliant. The price was great value and the dates worked perfectly for my two week Turkey itinerary .

The gulet boat that we sailed the Turquoise Coast on was really well-maintained and well-sized for the number of passengers on board. It was so hot during our sailing trip in late August that they recommended we slept out under the stars on deck. We slept on these comfy sun-loungers and it was amazing sleeping with a warm breeze. The crew with Alaturka were fantastic. They were really attentive and fun, but not overbearing at all. We had a crew of three Turkish guys who took such great care of us and gave us great tips and suggestions. I joined the gulet cruise as a solo female traveller and didn’t feel uncomfortable once.

The other passengers were from all over the world – including a family from Saudi Arabia, a couple from South Africa and the US, a few other Brits and Americans. Everyone got on so well and the atmosphere was brilliant. With Alaturka, you could also rent your own private gulet cruise boat or yacht with crew if you had your own big group.

What to pack for a sailing holiday

Depending on the company you go with, it’s unlikely you’d need to bring any bedding or towels. However, you will need lots of suntan lotion, swimwear and hats. The sun can be very strong and there may only be a certain amount of shade onboard. The gulet boats normally have quite a few inflatables and they’re nearly always full board.

Every sailing company will have its own policy for alcohol on board. Our gulet cruise with Alaturka offered a self-service bar with an honesty tab, therefore we didn’t need to bring our own alcohol on board.

I would recommend one or two evening outfits for the nights you dock in or near a port for the option to go out in the evening.

sunset on the turquoise coast

Where to stay before or after the sailing trip

The main sailing routes are Fethiye to Olympus, or the other way round.

Fethiye offers many accommodation options. One of the best luxury hotels is the Club Tuana, you can check rates here .

Otherwise you can find hundreds of other options covering all price ranges on Booking.com here .

In Olympus, there is the very unusual offering of treehouses in this amazing valley town.

Some of the best options include:

  • Turkmen Treehouses
  • Kadir’s Treetop Houses
  • Olympus Deep Green Bungalows

Towns to visit along the Turquoise Coast, Turkey

Although it was the starting point to my gulet cruise in Turkey, Fethiye was possibly my least favourite town along the coastline. The town has experienced some mass overdevelopment in the past few decades and I imagine much of its charm has been lost.

I don’t know why, but before I arrived, it seemed to think Fethiye was going to be a quaint village so I was even more disappointed. That being said, it is the starting point for many sailing trips in Turkey so you don’t necessarily need to spend too long there. Its harbour is pretty beautiful but I didn’t particularly like the surrounding streets and restaurant areas.

Some of the key attractions in and around Fethiye include the ancient city of Kadyanda and the abandoned ancient Greek village of Kaya Köyü.

Butterfly Valley

The first stop for many boats departing from Fethiye is the famed Butterfly Valley. This beautiful secluded cove is only reached by boat.

Its important to know that this beach isn’t sand, but instead, lots of tiny sharp rocks – really painful.

The beach sits at the entrance to a vast canyon, where there is also a cool off-the-radar back-to-basics campsite and a low-key bar and restaurants offering a cool hippy chilled vibe.

It’s called Butterfly Valley as it’s home to a butterfly farm, were there’s a huge diverse range of butterflies. August (when I visited) was not the season to see the butterflies, but the ones I did see were very colourful.

Butterfly valley, Turkey

Ölüdeniz is one of the most famous beaches in Europe. This stunning beach is regularly voted as one of the most beautiful, so I was really excited to dock here.

It really is a beautiful stretch, but as with many gorgeous beaches around the world, it certainly draws crowds and is pretty touristy.

One of the most popular activities to do in Ölüdeniz, and even in Turkey is paragliding. You can arrange this through your gulet cruise organisers, when you arrive in Ölüdeniz or in advance through GetYourguide. Book your paragliding jump here!

No matter which company you pick to go paragliding with, the experience is the same.

You depart from the centre of Ölüdeniz in a minibus with all of the paragliding kits and crew on board.

It’s one very long and perilous drive to the top of Babadag Mountain. I wondered a few times if the van was genuinely road-worthy enough, but we made it.

Ölüdeniz is one of the highest commercial locations in the world where you can paraglide. Together with the breathtaking views and consistently good weather, it is also one of the best places in the world to paraglide.

Once you reach the top, it takes no more than five minutes to jump into the gear and attach the parachute. You run down a short runway with your paragliding guide before, bam, you’re in the air.

We flew straight through the clouds, which was much like a warmer shower, before swerving sharply and emerging into the most spectacular view.

I was really impressed with my guide who I felt really wanted to make it an epic experience for me. He was very keen on making sure we tons of awesome photos and videos, and he really worked the ropes to create a stomach twisting experience. It was amazing!

Aside from paragliding, Ölüdeniz is also the starting point for the Lycian Trail, one of Turkey’s most iconic hiking routes.

In Ölüdeniz, there are also some great bars and cafes to enjoy some time in if you don’t feel like paragliding.

Paragliding in Olu Deniz

The beautiful harbour town of Kaş has a lot to offer and is a great town to visit along the Turquoise Coast. Its charming laneways are lined with interesting boutique stores, cute cafes, lively beach bars and metres of tumbling bougainvillea.

This area is also known for fantastic diving and many dive operators run trips straight from Kaş. Our boat trip with Alaturka permitted enough time to spend the afternoon diving, which was great.

We enjoyed fantastic cocktails at Mumi Cafe Beach. This beach bar had had an awesome atmosphere during the day, and I would highly recommend.

On the day we were in Kaş, it so happened to be Victory Day in Turkey. This meant that the evening was absolutely pumping. Hundreds of Turks had travelled from all over the country to revel in the town. It was an amazing experience as a tourist.

Exploring Kas in Turkey

The next stop along the coast is Kekova, and the magnificent Sunken City here – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Kekova is home to incredible underwater ruins that were submerged following an earthquake. This area was once a prominent town in the Byzantine and Lycian eras, but is now completely deserted, except for a handful of goats.

This is a no walk, no diving zone. But many boats do sail past each day slowly to take in the incredible site. You can see rooms, staircases and doorways above the sea level, as well as make out pathways and more rooms under the water level. Luckily the water is completely translucent, and is one of the most unusual sites I have ever seen.

Underwater ruins

Kaleköy and Simena Castle

Along the Turquoise Coast, this tiny, traditional village was one of my favourite spots. Visiting this tiny hillside hamlet was like a step back in time. The ancient Simena Castle is located at the top of the village and is well worth a visit. It takes around 10 minutes of hiking through the tiny village and up into the hill. At the top, you’ll find the old fortress, once a notable Lycian settlement. Here you will find an incredible panoramic vista over the Gokkaya bay. The heat can be particularly intense here and despite it being quite a short hike, we ran out of water.

The tiny laneways of the village are lined with local women (and children) selling their homemade souvenirs. They were not pushy at all and I bought several lovely bracelets here.

Simena castle on Turkey's Turquoise Coast

Lastly, the final spot along the Turquoise Coast to visit (or first if you’re doing this route in reverse) is the hippie town of Olympos.

An odd mix of travellers descend on this incredibly beautiful town, nestled in a canyon and surrounded by fragrant forest. It has a tucked away beach and an atmosphere that’s really quite unique. Visitors stay in ‘treehouses’, and the bars are leafy, basic and so, so chilled. If have the time, this is a great place to finish the trip and spend a few extra nights.

sailing in Turkey

So that concludes my guide to sailing in Turkey and exploring the Turquoise Coast by traditional gulet boat. I hope this guide is useful. both for choosing a tour company and find out about the ports. As mentioned, this route is often referred to as ‘the blue cruise’.

If you’re considering a longer trip, you might find my  two-week Turkey itinerary  here useful. I’ve also written guides to  Bodrum ,   Pamukkale ,  Ephesus , Istanbul  and  Cappadocia  here.

Have you sailed along Turkey’s Turquoise Coast? I’d love to hear if so. Drop a comment below, and if you’ve enjoyed this post, feel free to share using the below links!

The Turkish coastline you visited looks stunning. I would love to do a boat ride around here. 🙂 Looks like you had a whale of time especially swimming in the water.

Your pictures are amazing I had to look at them twice! What an experience that must have been, I never knew Turkey was so breath taking. The paragliding… Wow! I really enjoyed your post looks like a great future vacation.

My hubs is currently standing over my shoulder absolutely drooling at the thought of being able to do this kind of sailing. Those views are so magnificent what a lovely way to travel, peaceful, quiet and so beautiful.

Tehe, looks like you guys should definitely go and visit then 🙂

wow what a fabulous adventure! I would love to sail somewhere one day! I can’t believe I haven’t heard about Olu Deniz before ! Looks like a really nice beach! Your photos are amazing, I love the one of your jump especially ! So beautiful!

Picturesque coasts like those make it hard to leave the ship and explore. I could stare at that all day. But thankfully you pointed out numerous amazing things to do. I would thoroughly enjoy the paragliding. There is something about going through clouds that gives you an incredible feeling.

Turkey has always been one of the best countries I have visited until now, and can visit it many more times :), your pictures are just so amazing which makes me pack my bag and go to Turkey right away 🙂

Those are some amazing towns – Kas specially. It reminds me of a smaller town in Nepal called Bandipur with its cobbled pathways and bougainvillea. The water here is terrific, I definitely think that it is the best way to explore this coastline. Glad you shared your views on the same.

P.S: I love the pics

Really? I should definitely look into visiting there too!! 🙂 And thanks for your kind words about my photos!

This place is unbelievably beautiful. I’d book a trip here tomorrow if I could. The water looks so refreshing. I love beaches, I could stay here forever and not get bored for sure. The food looks really delicious as well. Definitely adding to my bucket list.

Eek, I’d also book a return trip back here tomorrow if I could! Thanks for your kind comment 🙂

The Turkish coastline seems so ethereal. The views, especially the sunset ones, are really breathtaking. I am sure it was a blissful experience cruising along on the turquoise coast of Turkey. The Olu Deniz beach looks gorgeous and the paragliding looks really exciting.

Hi Sandy! Yes, truly breathtaking! Thanks for your kind words!

Wow this sailing trip around turkey coast was stunningly beautiful. And added bonus the paragliding adventure love to do the sailing trip one day- another list added ti my bucket.

Awesome, glad to hear this post has inspired you! It is a truly beautiful coastline!

This is a really nice post. Thanks for sharing.

Great photos it makes me want to pack up and go now!!! I get sea sick so always worried about being on a boat on the ocean. Was it always calm?

A Guide to Gulet Sailing Holidays in Turkey

I am incredibly grateful for countless travel memories that I can look back on with fondness but one of my favourite is gulet cruising in Turkey. It was a four night, five-day sailing holiday along the Mediterranean coast from Fethiye to Olympus. Choosing to partly detox from an Internet addiction, and relax at the same time, the experience was ten times better than any spa retreat offers.

However, speaking to friends after the event, it seemed that the biggest misconception people have about gulet sailing holidays in Turkey, is that you’ll spend all day, every day on the boat being bored, but it is about much more than that. Firstly, if you are a novice to gulet cruising, it helps to understand the unique background, concept and what makes them different from others sailing vessels.

Gulet sailing

What is a Gulet in Turkey?

When you book gulet sailing holidays in Turkey, you are venturing into an age-old nautical tradition. Gulets are traditional, handcrafted wooden boats with two or three masts. Although other countries such as Italy, Montenegro, and Croatia, use gulets, Turkey has an esteemed and long-established reputation for making gulet boats, especially in Bodrum and Bozburun, two coastal hubs on the west and southwest coast.

Their original use was for sponge diving and fishing, but over the years, the concept has evolved to become overnight floating hotels. Esteemed professionals expertly handcraft each gulet boat with unique design and décor. You can find more information about gulet boats here .

eating on a gulet boat

Are Gulets Seaworthy?

Yes, these boats are extremely hardy, and every year during winter, the owners dock into the shipyards for maintenance and upkeep. Gulets are a specialised vessel, and different from a yacht. The latest materials and techniques are used in yacht construction. Hence the industry is always evolving because the primary purpose is sailing long distances, even around the world. Whereas short, coastal cruising is what gulet boats are designed for.

Gulet Cruising in Turkey

What are Blue Cruises in a Gulet Boat?

Gulet sailing holidays in Turkey focus on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, which make up the Turkish Riviera. Within this long stretch of coastline, captains follow defined Blue Cruise routes, with unique attractions and things to do. The Fethiye to Olympus way is one of the most popular, but passengers can also sail to the Greek Islands and back, as another alternative.

Budget travellers can book cabin charter on set Blue Cruise routes of which there are many, or large groups and families can book their private gulet sailing holiday and along with the captain, tailor-make a particular blue cruise route. Are you wandering if blue cruises are appropriate for you or not? Here is what a gulet expert says: https://www.guletexpert.com/what-is-blue-cruise/

Inside a gulet boat

What is it Like Staying on a Gulet Boat?

Most gulet boats range in size from 20 to 30 meters, and each has between 5 to 8 cabins. Within these cabins are double or single beds, an en-suite bathroom and sometimes wardrobes. Most gulets have air conditioning, although the humidity is less at sea than at land, so they are generally not needed, especially when sailing.

Eat your meals on deck, and there is a full crew to help you including the captain, deckhands, and cook. Gulet boats can cruise with wind force or turn on the engine for a faster experience. As with any travel concept, a gulet can be budget and basic or luxurious, in which case, the cabins are larger with exquisite furniture and décor. The sunbathing area is at the front of the boat and inside is a separate seating/bar area.

Places in Turkey to Book Gulet Sailing Holidays

Life on the Turkish Riviera focuses on seaside living, but some places have esteemed reputations for their excellence in the gulet sailing industry. Daily many gulet boats sail out of the harbours in these regions to take passengers on a 3 to 8-day cruise. They include….

Bodrum: The town, a favoured holiday destination for British people as well as Turks, has spearheaded Turkey’s tourism drive ever since the 1980s. As well as selling budget holidays, it also offers luxurious experiences leading it to become a favourite destination for rich and wealthy celebrities.

Marmaris: Another destination particularly favoured by the Brits, the harbour and marina area is a hive of everything nautical. Within the town itself, there is not much to do the area, however, is exceptionally scenic, explaining why it is a major sailing hub.

Fethiye: Round the world backpackers completing a tour of Turkey, book up for budget cabin charter Blue cruise routes to Olympus from Fethiye, although the town also offers luxury sailing at a higher cost.

Things to Do on Gulet Sailing Holidays in Turkey

Fethiye Turkey

As mentioned before, although the term “sailing holidays” imply, it is all about being at sea, gulet cruising is about a lot more than that, namely the diversity of things to do.

1: Explore the small coastal towns

The Turkish Riviera has many small, coastal towns, each with their characteristics. Gulets dock in either overnight or for the day, giving you time to wander and explore. Kas on the Mediterranean coast is a perfect example because despite embracing modern living, it has kept its authentic atmosphere, making it one of the quaintest places in Turkey.

2: Get to places only accessible by boat

Many uninhabited islands surround Turkey, and some of them such as Gemiler just outside Fethiye are worth exploring. Ruined Christian churches and a fantastic view make it a preferred place at night for boats to drop anchor. Kekova sunken ruins is another area ideally explored by boat for the best view.

3: Sleep on deck

During my blue cruise, I never slept in my cabin. Instead preferring the deck at the front of the boat, I thoroughly enjoyed going to sleep under the stars. There is something peaceful about just listening to the sounds of nature as you drop off and as much as my cabin was comfortable and quiet, I choose to sleep on deck every time.

4: See Caretta Caretta turtles

It is a guaranteed certainty you will see the endangered Caretta turtles if you cruise the Mediterranean coast but in particular, the Simena area. One morning, a small group came swimming around the boat for food and seeing their size, I realised their stamina was strong despite their docile appearance.

5: Gorgeous sunsets

Watching a Turkish sunset dip over the horizon is a favourite evening activity of mine because I am not talking about average sunsets here. The Mediterranean and Aegean coasts, boast of vibrant orange sunsets that are big attractions for tourists, who cannot resist getting their camera out to snap the view.

Gulet Blue Cruises

6: Catch your dinner

Of course, if you do not like fish or seafood, the cook will whip up many alternative dishes, but for fish lovers, part of the thrill is catching your dinner and BBQing it. From sea to plate within 20 minutes. You cannot get any fresher than that!

7: Snorkelling and diving

Most gulet boats have snorkelling equipment on board, which you are welcome to use when they stop for swimming breaks. Alternatively, Turkey is a scuba diving paradise with many underwater wrecks and various sea life. If you spend half a day in any scuba diving town, your boat captain can pre-book lessons for you, whether you are a novice or experienced.

8: Ice-cream deliveries!

In many spots around the coastline where boats dock in for swimming or overnight breaks, floating ice-cream boats offer the perfect refreshment. Pulling alongside the gulet and coming on board with many choices, it is a quirky concept of waiter service.

9: Jet-skis and parasailing

Likewise, anywhere boats gather, jet skis are for hire and passengers can parasail behind a speed boat. Jet skiing attracts adrenaline junkies while paragliding is an alternative bird’s eye view of the gorgeous landscape.

10: Visit historical ruins of ancient civilizations

Many Blue Cruise routes on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, stop by coastal historical ruins of which Turkey has hundreds. The Med coast was home to the Lycians, who left behind glorious cities such as Patara and Olympus, set in an overgrown forest. Their ancient cities have also sparked an official trekking route, one of the longest in the world taking as much as three months to complete.

11: See the Greek Dodecanese Islands

Although, the most popular routes of gulet sailing holidays in Turkey focus on the Turkish Riviera, mix your holiday with Greek destinations of which, the Dodecanese islands are perfect. 150 of them sit in the south Aegean Sea, just a short distance from Turkey. The two most famous are Kos, and Rhodes, however smaller islands like Simi, are ideal for getting off the beaten track.

Historical ruins, beautiful beaches, sleepy fishing villages, and world-class marinas make gulet cruising in Turkey an experience no other country in the world can replicate. Cruising the Turkish Riviera is not a new phenomenon, but it never appealed to mainstream holiday markets until the last decade when the Internet shifted people’s perception of travel.

Pre 2000, holidaymakers relied on travel agents to plan itineraries; but they now embark on independent forms of travel including gulet cruises around Turkey’s stunning coastlines.

Gulet cruises also called Blue Voyage routes began 70 years ago. The exiled “fisherman of Halicarnassus” Cevat Sakir Kabaagacli, arrived in Bodrum in 1925 to explore the Aegean Sea and surrounding coastline destinations.

He invited friends to join him, and they spent their time sponge diving, fishing, and wandering the Turkish Riviera. As a talented group of authors, word soon spread about their lazy days and explorations.

We wonder if he knew his lazy days would later become a popular aspect of holidaying in Turkey. From a three-day mini Blue Cruise to a two-week itinerary, experts with years of experience and passion for showing off the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts plan the adventure.

Sailing In The Turkish Riviera

Sailing Turkish Coast - Gumbet, Bodrum, Turkey

One of the best ways to see the Turquoise Coast is by sailing. With waters along the Mediterranean Coast as well as the Aegean Coast and beautiful crystal clear waters, the Turkish Riviera is the perfect place for a sailing holiday . From the boat to hire to the best route to take, here are the top things you need to know about sailing the Turkish Riviera.

Sailing The Turkish Riviera Route

Sailing trips along the Turkish Riviera usually begin in either Fethiye or Olympos, near the city of Antalya, and travel along the Turquoise Coast. The tours along this route are referred to as ‘blue cruises.’ These blue cruises can last anywhere from one day to a week or even longer .

On the blue cruise, you can dig into delicious Turkish delicacies, jump into the beautiful clear seas, explore impressive ancient ruins, and even stop to enjoy the lively towns lining the beautiful coastline. One of the best things about sailing the Turkish Riviera is the freedom to make your own plan; once you hire the boat, you can ask the captain to stop at any location.

How To Get To The Turkish Riviera

It is easy to travel to both Antalya and Fethiye.

The city of Antalya has a busy international airport, offering many flights during the high season. Although there is no airport in Fethiye , you can fly to Dalaman Airport, which is only 50km away. The city of Fethiye is then easily reachable by public bus or private transfer .

You may need to stay a night in the town before and after your sailing trip . Antalya and Fethiye offer plenty of accommodation for all budgets and all the tourist amenities you would expect.

Sailing The Turkish Riviera – Type Of Boat

Most tour companies offer sailing trips on ‘gulet schooner’ boats. Gulets are traditional wooden boats native to the Southwest Türkiye region. The large boats feature four to eight cabins for guests onboard.

While all boats offer the basic amenities, three types of gulet cruises are available depending on your budget: standard, deluxe, and luxury. A luxury gulet, for example, may include a jacuzzi, water sports equipment, and a 5-star crew service compared to the standard option.

Whether you want to hire an entire gulet or join a cruise, so many companies offer gulet cruises of the Turkish Riviera, so you can explore all your options and pick the perfect cruise for you.

The ancient capital of Lycia and UNESCO World Heritage site , Xanthos, is perched above the Esen River. It is the oldest ancient city in Turkey, with many important archaeological sites to explore. This is a must-see on any Turkish Riviera trip.

Dating back to the seventh century and one of the most important cities in ancient Lycia, Phaselis is a beautiful town situated on a peninsula. Phaselis is surrounded by natural beauty and is home to some of the region’s most impressive ruins, monuments, and artifacts.

The Eternal Flames Of Chimera

A site not to be missed, the Eternal Flames are an infrequent, natural phenomenon. While many myths surround this site, the flames burn due to methane gas deposits. The flames are said to have been burning mysteriously for thousands of years. This is a spectacular site on the Turkish Riviera.

Located just off of the shore of Kas is the island of Kekova and its famous Sunken City. The city was once a vast, important port to ancient Lycian and Roman civilizations but sunk in the 2nd century AD. Although most of the town is

submerged, it’s possible to see ruins from the shore or from a boat. Diving, walking, or swimming around the site is impossible, given its historical importance. However, the fantastic transparent water is almost completely visible from above.

Iztuzu Beach (Turtle Beach)

Turkish Coast - Iztuzu beach and the delta of Dalyan river, Dalyan, Mugla

Located near Dalyan, with crystal clear waters and a beautiful sandy beach, it’s not hard to see why Iztuzu Beach is so popular. It is lovely and gets its nickname from being the breeding ground for the endangered loggerhead sea turtles. Between May and September, the beach is closed from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. to conserve the area for turtle breeding. However, it’s possible to visit during the day.

Two of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

In the area of the Turkish Riviera, two of the ancient Seven Wonders of the World were located:

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus in Bodrum

This was a tomb built between 353 and 350 BC for Mausolus, a satrap in the Persian Empire, and Artemisia II of Caria, his wife and sister. The Mausoleum was known for its architectural beauty and size, making it one of the Seven Wonders. Although it was destroyed by successive earthquakes in the Middle Ages, today, visitors can still see its ruins in Bodrum, offering a glimpse into its past grandeur.

The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus

Although Ephesus is slightly north of what is traditionally considered the Turkish Riviera, it’s close enough to be relevant for travelers exploring the broader region. The Temple of Artemis was a large temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis. It was completed around 550 BC at Ephesus (near the modern town of Selçuk in Turkey). It was renowned for its magnificent size and splendid artwork.

Like the Mausoleum, the Temple of Artemis was also destroyed and rebuilt several times before its final destruction. Today, only a few remnants of the temple remain, but its fame endures.

As you can see, whether you choose to explore the Turkish Riviera by sea or by land, there is so much to see in this beautiful region.

Possibly the most dumbest question on the internet! I’m coming from Australia (first time overseas) where we have stunning beaches everywhere, never have I ever seen sun lounges and umbrellas to rent – it’s unheard of. Do you have to rent them to use the beach or can you just rock up with your towel and sit wherever you like? How do you know what’s a private beach and what isn’t? (Private beaches belonging to resorts in Australia are uncommon).

Your question is not dumb at all! It’s quite reasonable, especially for someone traveling overseas for the first time. Beach cultures and norms can vary significantly from one country to another.

It’s quite common in Europe to have sun lounges and umbrellas available for rent at the beach. However, you’re not obligated to rent these. You can absolutely bring your own towel and find a spot to relax. Just remember many beaches are pebbly so that rental chair might be nice.

As for identifying private beaches, they are usually well-marked. I hope this helps and have a fantastic trip!

Hello! Is mid April an ok time to visit the Riveira? Is there buses that easily connect each village?

Sure! People live here all year, just remember that there will be lots of things not open. Eg beach bars, and some activities won’t be available. Buses operate all year as locals use them. Enjoy.

Hi SJ Which place would you recommend out of Kas and Kalkan for a weeks holiday? I have heard Kalkan is more commercial and touristy Thanks Rachael

Both Kas and Kalkan are fantastic coastal towns in Turkey, and they each offer a slightly different vibe for your vacation. Your choice really boils down to what kind of experience you’re after.

So, Kalkan – it’s got this stunning harbor, incredible views, and loads of restaurants and shops to explore. And if you’re into nightlife, Kalkan’s got you covered with plenty of bars and clubs. Plus, there are some beautiful sandy beaches and beach clubs to soak up the sun. Just keep in mind that it can get pretty busy during the peak tourist season.

Now, Kas, on the other hand, is this charming, laid-back spot with a super relaxed atmosphere. You can mix in some history with beautiful natural landscapes, and there are awesome outdoor activities like diving, hiking, and boat trips to keep you entertained. The nightlife here is on the quieter side, perfect for a peaceful getaway. However, the beaches in Kas are a bit smaller and have pebbles instead of sand, and you might find fewer dining and shopping options compared to Kalkan.

Ultimately, your choice between Kas and Kalkan comes down to what kind of vacation vibe you’re into.

Do you think TWO weeks is enough to sail and visit Istanbul?

Sure! You can see so much in 14 day in Turkiye – take a look at some ideas we suggest here https://www.chasingthedonkey.com/14-day-turkey-itinerary-2-weeks/ and also shorter ideas here https://www.chasingthedonkey.com/14-day-turkey-and-greece-itinerary/

is mid October a good time to visit Bodrum and explore the near islands by sea

For sure! There will be way less people, and you may have some rain and wind on some days though.

Absolutely! Mid-October can be a fantastic time to visit Bodrum and hop over to the nearby islands by sea. The weather is usually still quite pleasant for swimming and outdoor activities, and it’s not as crowded as the peak summer season. You can explore beautiful islands, enjoy boat tours, and soak up the Mediterranean vibes without the scorching heat. It’s a sweet spot for a more relaxed and enjoyable getaway in Bodrum and its surrounding islands.

10 Best Greece Cruises, According to Travel Experts

These are the best Greece cruises for island hopping with ease.

gulet cruise on turkish riviera

Courtesy of Variety Cruises

With its stunning beaches, rich history, iconic landmarks, and delectable cuisine, a trip to Greece is always a great idea. However, since the nation is home to more than 6,000 islands — some of which are only accessible by boat — your best bet is to explore via cruise. Just take it from Rob Clabbers, Travel + Leisure A-List travel advisor and Q Cruise + Travel founder, who tells T+L that “Greece and the Greek isles are just the perfect destinations to explore by ship” since “a cruise allows you to see more islands and gives you a unique vantage point.” Several of the best Greece cruises also include visits to neighboring countries like Turkey and Italy, for example, which allow travelers to experience several cultures and countries in one action-packed trip. Intrigued? We don’t blame you: Ahead, check out our favorite Greece cruises for every type of traveler, along with itinerary recommendations and expert insight.

Windstar Cruises

Courtesy of Windstar

According to Clabbers, this small luxury cruise line is perfect for those who prefer “a smaller, more casual yacht-style experience.” Per the pro, the onboard vibes are best described as “upscale, but not stuffy or over-the-top.” It’s also worth noting that “each ship offers a water sports platform with kayaks, water trampolines, stand-up paddling, snorkel gear, floating carpets, and other ‘toys’ that are deployed (weather and location permitting, of course) at least once on most Greek itineraries.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Windstar’s Greece itineraries, Clabbers is quick to call out the popular Treasures of the Greek Isles voyage, which sets sail each week from May through October. Passengers can visit beloved ports of call like Mykonos and Santorini, along with “lesser-known (and less-crowded!) places like Monemvasia and Patmos.” As part of the experience, guests have the unique opportunity to feast among the ruins in neighboring Turkey as part of the line’s complimentary Evening in Ephesus “after-hours” event, which, per Clabbers, features a decadent five-course dinner accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Speaking of culinary offerings, it’s worth mentioning that Windstar is the official cruise line partner of the esteemed James Beard Foundation, which means you can expect some of the top eats at sea.

Explora Journeys

Courtesy of Explora Cruises

“A new entrant in the luxury travel industry, Explora Journeys offers all the style and comfort of a modern European luxury resort property on its 922-guest yacht-inspired Explora I and, launching later this year, Explora II, ” explains Clabbers. The line has taken the industry by storm, doing away with cliche cruise staples like main dining rooms, large buffets, and notoriously small staterooms. Instead, says Clabbers, guests can choose from a selection of “excellent restaurants that other companies would call specialty restaurants,” as well as “four swimming pools, each with their own vibe,” and all-suite accommodations, some of which boast private plunge pools. Per the pro, it’s worth noting that “Explora Journeys is the first luxury line that offers a dedicated youth activity program and facility year-round;” as such, it’s an excellent option for multi-generational families looking to cruise Greece in style.

Itinerary: Sailing round-trip from Athens, the aptly named eight-night A Journey from Athens to Athens itinerary includes a mix of popular ports like Mykonos and Santorini, along with hidden-gem locales like Syros, which is famous for its neoclassical architecture, a buzzy main town, and (essentially) crowd-free beaches. The cruise also visits the serene resort town of Marmaris in Turkey before heading to its final port of call, Kos , a gorgeous Greek island known for its sandy beaches, white-washed buildings, and historical sites.

Celebrity Cruises

Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

According to Clabbers, " Celebrity Cruises was launched by a Greek shipping family," so the line has deep ties to — and many officers who hail from — the country. What’s more, he says, "When you visit Greece, they are taking you to their homeland, and it shows in their passion and love of the Hellenic nation." The line offers a range of larger ships and, thus, more options between accommodations (from economical inside rooms to luxurious suites in The Retreat), itineraries, restaurants, and entertainment; as such, Celebrity is "a great option for adults and families who like more activities on their ship."

Itinerary: The nine-night Best Of Greece itinerary cruises round-trip from Athens on select dates from May to October and takes place aboard the 2,170-passenger Celebrity Infinity , which Clabbers described as one of the line’s “smaller and more seasoned ships.” The first port of call is Santorini, followed by Ephesus in Turkey and Mykonos. “Additionally,” says Clabbers, " Infinity   travels to Volos and Thessaloniki, ports that are not typically visited by large ships.” Kavala, located in the northern part of the country, serves as the final port of call before heading back to Athens. Here, cruisers can enjoy a mix of history, culture, and architecture — plus some seriously stunning landscapes (from lagoons and lakes to wetlands and beaches) along with lush flora and fauna.

Silversea offers a variety of Greece cruise itineraries, and it’s one of few truly luxe all-inclusive cruise lines. Per Clabbers, the 596-passenger Silver Moon offers all-suite accommodations and a classic small-ship feel — complete with excellent meals, beverages, and shore excursions all included in your cruise fare. Speaking of the latter, he says, “The inclusion of shore excursions also makes it easy to dive deeper into Greek culture and culinary experiences.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Silversea’s Greek itineraries, Clabbers especially recommends the seven-night Athens to Athens cruise, which “calls on highlights, but adds places like Souda Bay in Crete, Nafplion, Patmos, and Rhodes ,” where he recommends visiting the “temple ruins at Lindos, with views over the Mediterranean, and then walk in the footsteps of the Crusaders in the old town.” The cruise also stops in Nafplion, which, despite its romantic seaside setting and lovely beaches, is yet to be uncovered by most American travelers — for now, at least.

Variety Cruises

According to T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist Mary Curry , this local Greek cruise line offers its own fleet of yachts, most carrying fewer than 50 passengers. Since the ships are so small, says Curry, “you can travel a bit further off the beaten path.” Variety offers a handful of Greece itineraries, including specially themed hiking and wine cruises.

Itinerary: Travelers craving a true off-the-beaten-path experience can book the seven-night Unexplored Greece voyage, which sails round-trip from Athens. The first port of call is Ikira, a tiny island known for its hot springs that also happens to be one of the world’s Blue Zones. Then, it’s off to Patmos, known for its fascinating history and unspoiled beaches, before overnighting in Lipsi, a laid-back isle famous for its gorgeous scenery. On board, guests can taste the destination’s famous wine, Aposperitis. The fun continues in Levintha, inhabited by a single family who raises animals and runs a restaurant where guests can enjoy fresh-caught fish. After, it’s off to Amorgos, where scenic hiking and beautiful beaches abound. The next day, you’ll stop at Panagia Hozoviotissa, a cliffside monastery dating back to the 10th century, before heading to Koufonisia, which boasts majestic caves and rock pools accessible only by boat (thankfully, Variety as you covered). The final stop of the day is the serene island of Iraklia, which offers clear-blue waters ideal for swimming. After remaining here overnight, you’ll head to the final port of call, Serifos, where guests can visit a remote beach, followed by an onboard BBQ feast to refuel before heading to Chora, a fairy-tale village.

This French-owned cruise line offers an impressive fleet of small luxury ships. Additionally, says Curry, “Most cabins have private balconies, and travelers who plan early are rewarded with excellent value for the money.” What’s especially unique about Pontant, explains the pro, is that they “partner with Smithsonian Journeys on select departures to offer an enrichment program of included lectures and shore excursions in each port.”

Itinerary: Curry especially recommends the seven-night Cruising the Greek Islands of the Southern Aegean sailing, which will cruise round-trip from Athens in July and October 2025. The cruise calls on aforementioned spots like Patmos, Rhodes, and Amorgos before visiting Adamas in Milos, a volcanic island teeming with postcard-worthy white-washed towns and breathtakingly beautiful beaches. Adamas itself is a tiny fishing port where colorful boats shimmer against the blue waters. Finally, it’s off to Mykonos and Napflion before finally disembarking in Athens.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line is world-famous for its exciting onboard offerings for children of all ages — including character and superhero meet-and-greets, dining options themed after beloved Disney princesses, and live performances galore — making it a favorite for families hoping for a fun-filled Greece vacation.

Itinerary: "Setting sail aboard the Disney Dream on the seven-night Mediterranean with Greek Isles itinerary is nothing short of magical!" says Megan Guinnup , a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels . Cruising round-trip from Rome, the ship calls on Naples before exploring Greece. In addition to popular ports like Athens and Mykonos, you'll also visit Chania on the island of Crete, which offers a bustling harbor, exquisite architecture, and cobblestone streets that look like they were plucked straight from a (Disney) fairy tale. After exploring each locale, the fun continues back on board, where, per the pro, "there is enchantment everywhere — meeting beloved characters, enjoying deck parties with Mickey and Minnie, and indulging in exquisite cuisine."

Royal Caribbean

This mega-ship line truly has it all: Flashy entertainment and onboard activities — which, depending on the ship, can include everything from water slides to zip lines — and plenty of drinking and dining offerings to appease even the pickiest eaters. Guinnup and Kari Dillon, owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, recommend setting sail aboard Odyssey of the Seas , which offers several Greek itineraries. "On board," says Guinnup, "There's a plethora of activities to enjoy, from bumper cars and roller skating to exquisite dining and a bionic bar — there's something for everyone!"

Itinerary: The seven-night Greek Isles itinerary sails round-trip from Rome with stops in Santorini, Ephesus, Mykonos, and Naples. Keep in mind that because the ship is so large, Santorini and Mykonos are both tender ports. With that in mind, Dillon recommends springing on The Key, an optional add-on that includes priority tender access so that you can spend as much time as possible on land basking in its beauty.

Virgin Voyages

Richard Branson’s adults-only line has taken the industry by storm with its innovative offerings, including 20-plus restaurants instead of buffets, an onboard tattoo parlor, adult-focused entertainment offerings, and a two-story nightclub.

Itinerary: Dillon especially recommends the seven-night Greek Island Aglow itinerary for travelers seeking a high-energy, adults-only option. She continues, telling T+L, “Not only does this sail to the islands of Santorini and Rhodes, but it [also] has an overnight in Mykonos, which is world-famous for its lively party atmosphere.” As a bonus, the cruise also calls on Bodrum in Turkey, which boasts beautiful beaches, flower-filled cafes, and a bustling nightlife scene.

Celestyal Cruises

The Greece-based Celesytal Cruises prides itself on offering an authentic Greek vacation experience. Additionally, Celesytal is unique in that it offers year-round Aegean Sea sailings cruising round-trip from Athens and ranging in length from three to 14 nights. On land, Celeystal guests can choose from a selection of the line’s “Authentic Excursions,” which are specially curated, small-group, expert-led experiences designed to take travelers off the beaten path. Options — including walking food tours and pottery-making demos at a local factory — abound, depending on the particular port of call.

Itinerary: The seven-night Idyllic Aegean voyage visits Thessaloniki (which offers an eclectic combination of history, nightlife, and gastronomy), Kuşadası (a popular Turkish resort town), and Heraklion (the capital of Crete) before heading to iconic isles like Santorini and Mykonos, where the ship will remain overnight. Before returning to Athens for disembarkation, you’ll also stop in magnificent Milos.
