History of Plum Branch Yacht Club

Plum Branch Yacht Club is a lake paradise with pristine waters for all things aquatic, a vacation getaway spot for families, and a safe-haven with acres for children to enjoy childhood-wanderings, activities, and explorations. Plum Branch Yacht Club was established on March 2, 1996, by George Selfridge and Bea McClain, formerly of Atlanta, who were selected by the Corps of Engineers to operate the business now known as Plum Branch Yacht Club at Lake J Strom Thurmond (aka Clarks Hill Lake).

At Plum Branch Yacht Club we have RV camping sites along the shore, a Marina and Lakeside Grill (a renowned seafood restaurant – now also serving homemade pizza! It is accessible by boat, car, golf cart, or by foot, with fabulous sunsets, enjoyed from our deck overlooking the lake—perfect for those who enjoy nature and dining out. 

At Plum Branch Yacht Club most everyone is a “regular”. We have a strong sense of community and an extended family environment where everyone knows everyone, and the kids are free to wander the 93 acres and make new friends or find old ones. The kids are safe to run, fish, swim, play, and not be too concerned about the world outside our gate. In short, Plum Branch Yacht Club, Inc provides the kind of safe-world of the 1950s where a kid was free to be a kid and not grow up too soon.

We offer special events at The Pavilion on Plum Beach, and the Lakeside Grill caters to exquisite weddings against shimmering lake backgrounds and stunning sunsets.

We sponsor  4H2O  Camp every summer in collaboration with nearby Clemson University and the 4H organization.  Kids learn all about the environment around the lake, the health of the water, fish, and habitat of the lake as well as acquiring fishing skills and boating safety. They even learn a little biology without realizing it.

We have slips from 10’x25′ to 22’x90′. Most of our slips are covered and have county water and plenty of electricity whether you have a fishing boat, a pontoon boat, a cruiser, or a houseboat. We provide in-slip pump-outs at a nominal fee. We offer a gas dock and boat ramp adequate for anything from a fishing boat to a very large houseboat. We also have land storage & sheds for boats and RV’s. PBYC offers a limited number of transient boat slips for short stays.

Lake J Strom Thurmond is an unpolluted 71,000-acre lake with 1200 miles of shoreline created by the Army Corps of Engineers by damming the Savannah River just above Augusta, GA. The lake is so pristine that it is safe to eat as many fish as you like, which include:

• Largemouth Bass
• Catfish (regularly longer than the tailgate of a pickup truck)
• Hybrid Bass
• Striped Bass
• Varieties Native to Southern Lakes

The pristine, uncrowded waters make ideal conditions for enjoying water sports including swimming, boating, and waterskiing. There is always a smooth secluded cove to learn to water ski or get pulled on a tube or perfect your wakeboard skills.

Campsites are available for days, weeks, and months at a time. Please call for availability and pricing information. There is no limit to RV sizes. We have electrical service (30 &/or 50 AMP) and water on the grounds. Some sites have septic hookups. We also have RV storage. Primitive tent options are available with no water or electricity. We have a bathhouse on-site, a Ship’s Store on-site for beverages, snacks, ice, and other basics items such as water, soft drinks, beer, snacks, tackle, lake maps, charcoal, and ice cream!

We have  41 13 x 35 storage units available on-site with long lockable doors, and concrete floors, electricity, and light. These units can fit a boat and trailer, golf cart, grill, camping or outdoor gear. They are not climate-controlled.

From campers who want every modern convenience to those who like to rough it, Clarks Hill Lake features a number of campsites that rank among the best in the East.

A large network of hiking and mountain biking paths may be found in the 2,500-acre Bussey Point Wilderness recreation area, which is situated on a peninsula of a lake.

Near Clarks Hill Lake, in a short drive, lies the charming river town of Augusta. For a wonderful evening filled with food, music, and outdoor recreation, the Augusta Riverwalk is a wheelchair-accessible walkway in the city of Augusta.

Excellent locations to broaden your horizons and spend the day studying include the Morris Museum of Art and the Augusta Museum of History.

Thurmond Lake is surrounded by three significant medical facilities. The distance between the University Hospital of McDuffie, Wills Memorial Hospital, and the Self Regional Family Healthcare - Savannah Lakes is less than 30 miles.
