1981 Gulfstar 50' Ketch

Model 50' Ketch

Posted Over 1 Month
1981 Gulfstar 50' Ketch Gulfstar Yachts was founded in 1970 by Vince Lazzara, an industry pioneer who in the early 1950s helped make a success of Aeromarine, one of the very first fiberglass boatbuilders. In the early 1960s he did the same at Columbia Yachts, which became the worlds biggest sailboat builder in its day. Early on Gulfstar emphasized low price and maximum interior space over build quality and sailing ability, but in the mid-1970s the company shifted gears and worked to deliver a more high-end product. The most notable manifestation of this was the Gulfstar 50, a large center-cockpit cruiser first introduced in 1975. The GS 50 was the best boat Gulfstar ever built and also the most popular, with 172 hulls launched during a six-year production run that ended in 1980. Designed by Lazzara himself, the GS 50 boasts superior interior joinery, generous accommodations, robust construction, and a well proportioned hull and rig. These days it is one of the best values on the brokerage market in a larger center-cockpit boat. Though better built than most Gulfstars, the GS 50 is not without its faults. Construction is simple and straightforward, with a solid hull laminate composed of multiple layers of mat and woven roving. (Note, however, a few hulls may be cored with balsa.) The hull is stiffened, not with liners, but with full bulkheads and furniture components that are tabbed in place. The deck is balsa-cored, with a through-bolted joint glassed over from below. The full-length rudder skeg is also bolted in place. The ballast, which consists of lead chunks embedded in concrete slurry, is encapsulated within the long fin keel. Problems over the years have included hull blisters, which normally are just cosmetic, but in some cases have involved saturated cavities surrounding the ballast. These must be drained and flushed before they are filled in. The mainmast step, an iron plate in the bilge directly over the keel, is subject to corrosion, while the mizzen step on ketch-rigged boats may have crushed the deck core beneath it. Leaking deck fixtures, hatches, and port windows are other common complaints. In some boats the bronze stern tube housing the rudderstock may eventually separate from the surrounding hull laminate and must then be rebonded in place. There have also been reports of loose tabs around bulkheads and sub-floor structures that also need rebonding. The good news is that many owners value their GS 50s enough that they are willing to make repairs. Well-maintained boats are not hard to find; boats in poor condition are priced accordingly and normally are worthy of reconstruction. For most owners the boats most attractive feature is its interior. The more popular layout, originally developed for the charter trade, features three staterooms and works very well for families. The master stateroom aft with an en sui
1985 Bluewater Ingrid
Muskegon, Michigan
Make Bluewater
Model Ingrid
1985 Bluewater Ingrid The Ingrid 38 from the pen of William Atkin is a heavy displacement blue water cutter derived from Colin Archer's famous double ender designed North Sea pilot boats, which in turn were inspired by Viking boats renowned for their heavy weather characteristics. Perhaps Atkin sums it up best by saying it's "the kind of boat that behaves herself in rough water and can be depended upon to sail herself". (To that part we do hear frequent mentions of the superb one-finger-on-tiller tracking and a comfortable ride.) With her old world style, Josette's a good looking boat with a sheer line reminiscent of Crealock's famous Westsail 32. Her seaworthiness is there to see in her full keel, heavy displacement and overbuilt construction. Her hull is heavily hand laid in fiberglass. There's robust outboard chain plates and an outboard rudder protected by extra fiberglass and a large bronze shoe casting should she scrub the bottom. Atkin's main rework on the Ingrid 38 from Archer's original design was finer entry on the bow which 'cushions' her landing off the waves and even may increase speed slightly. Below the waterline she has a long full keel with deep v-sections forward keeping her stable in the rough. The ballast is encapsulated and is distributed from bow to stern, to keep the weight as low as possible. Rounding this off, there's plenty of flotation designed in her ends, fore and aft which helps keep her dry. The trade off of heavy displacement and ultimate stability is usually in speed so the Ingrid 38 is not considered fast. By the numbers, her hull speed works out at 7.2 knots but she'll more often manage a consistent 6 knots while cruising. Surprisingly she's known to sail pretty well in light airs, as owners report she'll do half the wind speed in up to 8 knots of wind. However, she's a boat that comes into her own in heavier seas. The cutter rig gives plenty of options on all points of sail and she's an easy boat to single-hand. Josette is her original name and she has spent most all of her life in fresh water. She only spent one year in salt water in 1985, her original launch year. This is a one-owner vessel. The hull was built in 1974 by Bluewater Yachts in Washington state and it is reported that these are the same builders that build the Nordic Tugs. The interior cabin sides (ceiling) were finished in planking by the original owner. The hull is foam insulated to keep you cool when it is hot outside and warm when it is cold outside. The galley area is a great work space for any type of cooking. The mast is anodized aluminum construction by MetalMast Marine, with internal halyards. The hull is solid fiberglass construction and does have some gel coat surface blisters above the waterline, but they do not appear to be structural. She recently had the following engine work accomplished: new head gasket, two new exhaust valves, injector service,
1978 Pearson 365
Ludington, Michigan
Make Pearson
1978 Pearson 365 Brokers notes: This 36 Pearson is a lot of boat for the money. She has had some upgrades to her electronics and is in over all sail-able condition. Her diesel runs strong, the sails are in good condition and there is an extra mizzen sail, an extra genoa and an extra main. The cabin floor needs attention but is sound and has no structural issues that we know of. She has always been in freshwater and has a full winter canvas and steal storage cradle are included in the price.
1986 Nauticat 36
Charlevoix, Michigan
Make Nauticat
1986 Nauticat 36 Sovereign is a 1986 FRESH WATER only Nauticat 36. This boat is being offered by her second owner of 19 years. With her 90hp Ford Lehman diesel engine she performs as a true motorsailor. The interior layout plan is the optional plan B with a large double aft berth and separate head in the master cabin. Her Ketch rig, dual steering stations, large pilot house with opening sun roof make this model quite unique and would make a fantastic option for either a live aboard couple or sailor that wishes to complete the loop. Economical to operate with accommodations for two couples make this a vessel to consider.

Make Oyster
Model 46 Center Cockpit
1990 Oyster 46 Center Cockpit Built as hull number 25 at the Landamores Yard in Norfolk England "Black Pearl" is well founded and ready for "all ocean" cruising. This Oyster 46 is Ketch rigged and designed to be seakindly and solid in heavy air conditions and very nimble in light to moderate winds. She is fitted with the optional Scheel Keel (external lead) and has a fully skeg supported rudder. She is currently for sale by the 3rd owner and located in the fresh water sea known as Lake Michigan. Delivered originally in England, "Black Pearl" has found her way across the Atlantic, through the Carribean, to Florida where she was purchased by the 2n owner. Brought north, with a brief stop in Kentucky, she is currently located in Charlevoix, Michigan. The current owners have been meticulous in "Black Pearls" care, upgrades and maintenance. Her layout above deck and below make this a wonderful yacht for the cruising couple that would like to invite family and friends aboard. We invite you to take a look at the full Specs to follow and make an appointment for your personal viewing. She is currently in our waterfront heated storage building and ready for your inspection.

Make Glen L Coaster
Model Custom
2001 Glen L Coaster Custom You are looking at a custom built motorsailer that originally started from a Glen L Coaster design; therefore the hull design is from Glen L and the rest of the boat has been thought out and all was built by an aircraft electrical engineer. The attention to detail and build quality is quite remarkable. She is built of plywood construction, using epoxy resin and fiberglass sheathing everywhere. The Load Rite tandem axle trailer more than takes care of this fine vessel on the road. Look at the electrical system layout. It does not get much better than this. From the construction of the hull, which has the highest quality materials, to the Yanmar diesel engine with only 118 hours, this is just the quality of vessel you are looking for to go cruising the Great Loop or to go to the North Channel. Come and sail or motor her away today!

Model 37 Crealock
1994 Pacific Seacraft 37 Crealock 1994 PACIFIC SEACRAFT 37’ CREALOCKReady for Offshore Cruising The Pacific Seacraft 37 (aka Crealock 37) is designed for cruising. She is a beautiful sailing ship that has excellent performance on all points of sail, is superbly constructed and time tested. This Crealock 37 is a superb high performance cruising yacht which incorporates all the best qualities an experienced sailor looks for in "a proper yacht" - seaworthiness, premium quality, very good performance, comfort and the ability to be sailed short-handed. The Pacific Seacraft Crealock 37 is a truly solid blue water cruiser built to go anywhere in comfort, good sea keeping abilities, and a pleasure to sail."The Crealock 37 is an attempt to provide the weekender and the cruising sailor with a boat which will travel fast between ports under complete control, and which will yet remind him that the passage itself should be one of the pleasures of the cruise." --W.I.B. Crealock, Designer She has been the benchmark for world cruisers for 20 plus years and rightfully so. This voyager shocks even the most experienced sailors in lighter air. While everyone expects a passagemaker to perform well in 30 knots of breeze, most are genuinely surprised to see this lively lady tack gracefully in 2-3 knots of wind. The Pacific Seacraft 37 was designed by Bill Crealock, who is one of the few naval architects who can draw from the personal experience of 8 years of blue water cruising. His Pacific Seacraft 37 (aka Crealock 37) is legendary and was designed strictly for offshore cruising. She was recently inducted into the Cruising Yacht Hall of Fame. She is a beautiful sailing ship that has excellent performance on all points of sail, is superbly constructed and time tested. Here are the designer's comments, "When setting out to design the Pacific Seacraft 37, I had the luxury of doing it for myself without obligation to builder or dealer. I did not have to pay homage to interiors festooned with bunks, or revered classic features, or long waterlines or short, or distorted ends." --W.I.B. Crealock, Designer Owners Comments: Second owner and in Excellent Condition. Perfect couples cruising boat, very sea kindly, and extremely easy to handle in tight quarters. All line lead aft for easy sail handling. New

1968 Alberg Atomic Four This very pretty Alberg 30, designed by Carl Alberg and built by Whitby Boat Works in Canada, is a very popular cruising boat. She is very safe, stiff, dry and is a sea-kindly motion boat for long passages across large bodies of water. Sweet Old Boat was totally restored several years ago and nothing was left to be done. To restore her glory she will only need cleaning and attention to bright work on her wood trim. Seven years ago she had a new Selden mast, boom, standing rigging, new mainsail and roller furling. New Raymarine wind speed, depth, VHF radio and new CD-AM/FM, were also installed at this time. Come aboard this Sweet Old Boat and sail her away today!

1985 Pearson 36
1985 Pearson 36 Many knowledgeable sailors have praised this thirty-six Pearson design by Bill Shaw. She was designed by a man passionate about cruising and racing and his appreciation for comfort under sail and on the hook shows throughout. It might sound like an exaggeration to claim the 36 is more accommodating than many 40 footers, were it not for the proud and experienced owners who have said she exceeds the livability of many a 42! With 6' or more of headroom throughout, comfortable sleeping room for 6 and an incredibly efficient galley to feed the crew, it's hard to imagine living anywhere but aboard! The aft berth is queen size! The warm rich teak interior is inviting and she also has teak and holly cabin sole you could almost eat off of. The complete dodger and bimini will keep you out of the sun. A new custom winter cover was made in 2012, assuring complete protection during the off season storage on the hard. With her modern fin keel and spade rudder under-body, she can point high in to the wind and also track well in a following sea. Plenitude has been extremely well maintained and regularly upgraded and is ready for your summer sailing. She has spent her entire life in the fresh water of the Great Lakes. The current owner has enjoyed her for 14 years and is ready to pass a turn-key vessel over to the next excited owner.
