The Fastest German Sedans Ranked By 0-60 MPH Time

10 used cars that give you the most features for under $20,000, 10 dependable used sedans that cost less than the average price of a new car in 2024.

The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is the most expensive new car in the world , but there is a lot more to this car. Other than requiring four years in development time, its owners also had to work in collaboration with its maker to ensure the luxurious car would meet their desired design and cultural desires. Here are 10 things you need to know about the $28 million Rolls-Royce Boat Tail.

1 The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail's Nautical Design Was Client-Driven

The Boat Tail is one of Rolls-Royce’s three released customized cars with a nautical design. Word on the street is that three customers, who enjoyed the Rolls-Royce Sweptail’s modern boat and J-Class yacht style had approached the carmaker. Supposedly, this came at the right time, as the head of Rolls-Royce Coachbuild Design, Alex Innes, and his team were interested in modifying the company’s boat tail arrangement. The Rolls-Royce coach-building legacy included the installation of hull structures of boats into the car’s rolling framework . It was decided that the three nautically designed, custom-built Rolls-Royce cars for these clients would have the same structures but also have unique features that would display their respective owners’ characters.

2 The Exotic Car Features A Neatly Tailored And Detailed Exterior

The interior of Rolls Royce models usually features a gray and black material known as Caleidolegno Veneer. This same material has been employed to be used on the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail’s exterior. The veneer has open pores along its linear wood grain and brushed stainless steel pinstripe trims. Its 5.8-meter length showcases its unique nautical design. Other elements in the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail design include a wrapped windshield, an aligned A-pillar, and a continuous negative sculpture. All of these intricate features contribute to Rolls-Royce Boat Tail Car’s 1,813 new handmade parts, which add up to a whopping 20 years in manpower hours.

3 The Boat Tail Was Designed To Attend To Your Secret Pleasures

Inspired by the one and only Santiago Calatrava, the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail displays a deck that makes a dramatic entrance into the air, resembling a sweeping butterfly . The bespoke deck holds an enviable champagne chest and allowances for other luxurious items like caviar. The deck also extends on both sides in the form of cocktail tables and introduces some picnic stools. The rear picnic area, inspired by the architect, was designed to function as a hosting area for the car’s owner. To continue its tradition of adding parasols to its models such as Ghosts and Wraiths, Rolls-Royce has also added a special umbrella for protection against bad weather.

4 It Was Inspired By J-Class Yachts

When the three Rolls-Royce clients approached the British carmaker, their request was a Coach-built automotive that was as similar to a J-class yacht as could be . As seen, the Boat Tail Rolls-Royce imitates the hull of a J-yacht. Its name, Boat Tail, stems from the resemblance of its side and top to the super yacht.

5 A Product of Rolls-Royce's Coach Building Legacy

Rolls-Royce began its journey of cementing its coach-building legacy with the debut of the hand-built Sweptail. The model was so successful in the market, that clients started showing interest in akin models. This, in turn, led to Rolls-Royce creating its very own Coach building division. The Boat Tail marks the first product by this new division. Rebuilding its coach-building legacy is a great decision for the marque since it has long since been in the business of hand-building customized automobiles. Coach-built vehicles do not get outdated, broken down, or recycled. Instead, these cars move from generation to generation and constitute a part of car design history.

6 It Is A Modern Version Of The Classic 1932 Rolls-Royce Boat Tail

The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail was built for a couple who happen to be loyal clients of the car manufacturer. As they approached the company, the couple shared their ownership of a 1932 Rolls-Royce Boat Tail in their collection of cars. The aft deck is a contemporary rendition of the wooden rear decks of the 1932 version of the automobile that has extensive wood surfaces. Sharing the same engine and skeleton as the Rolls-Royce Phantom, the Boat Tail is fitted with an N74B68 twin-turbocharged V-12 engine having a displacement of 6.75 liters and an output of 563 horsepower. Its custom-made Bose Corporation sound component utilizes the automobile’s floor as a sonorous chamber.

7 Its Front Features A Deconstructed Pantheon Grille

Rolls-Royce models would naturally stand out from their peers in a car lineup. Their undeniable presence takes its form from the classic pantheon grille. The Boat Tail, however, is fitted with a dismantled version of the pantheon grille to soften the appearance of the car, in comparison with the generic formal look. The usual emblem, awareness, and frame are still a part of the automobile, but there is also a decreased amount of formality to it. To balance out the effect of the deconstructed pantheon grille, the front lamps have sharp horizontal features and daytime running lights that take the form of “heavy brows” to the round headlights.

8 The Boat Tail Has Luxurious Interiors

If you are a fan of neat and spacious cars that allow you to be as creative as you want, then you should definitely go for the Rolls Royce Boat Tail. You can literally feel and see the impact of the human touch in the car’s stylistic interior . Each of its luxurious elements is carefully arranged in a subtle yet obvious manner. The sears and the doors are clothed in high-quality leather befitting the Rolls-Royce model. There are also crafted wood and refined metal features to engage your senses as you spend time in the car. The car manufacturer contacted the Swiss watchmaker, Bovet Fleurier, to commission one-of-a-kind timepieces for the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail. The thin-rimmed two-tone steering wheel and a Montblanc pen in a hand-built aluminum-leather pen case, sitting in the glove compartment, grace the Boat Tail’s interiors.

9 The Whopping $28 Million Price-Tag

The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is estimated to be worth around $28 million. Hence, it has broken the record of the most expensive car in the world previously held by the Bugatti La Voiture Noire of $25.3 million. Of course, this limits the number of people that can purchase the costly Rolls-Royce Boat Tail Car. The British carmaker has not confirmed the price of this model to protect the privacy of its customers. One unit of the Boat Tail Rolls-Royce is speculated to belong to music power couple Jay-Z and Beyoncé. Certain hints, such as the first unit of the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail was made for a couple and having the same color as this celebrity couple’s favorite color, point that Jay-Z and Beyoncé own the car, despite Rolls-Royce not releasing an official statement on the owners of the car.

10 A Bold Indicator Towards Rolls-Royce's Future

Rolls-Royce

As humans approach a new dawn of automobiles, the car manufacturer is quite interested in maintaining its top spot in the industry of producing luxury cars. Coach-built cars are the opposite of mass-manufactured cars and are, thus, the vortex of luxurious cars. These rare and outstanding automobiles consume a lot of time, effort, skills, and other resources in coming to being. This characteristic about them can help their maker in coming up with unforeseen and ingenious solutions to designing other Rolls-Royce models, allowing designers to work beyond the limits in place. The car producer wants the design of the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail to act as a significant indicator of its future.

The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail: A Superyacht for the Streets

rolls royce yacht

The competition rages on for top honors among Europe’s elite automakers, and the coachbuilders at Rolls-Royce have joined the battle in hopes of reclaiming the title of “world’s most expensive new car.” After originally earning the coveted moniker in 2017 with the brand’s ultra-exclusive Rolls-Royce Sweptail, the British marque has re-entered the race for affluent superiority with the introduction of the completely bespoke Rolls-Royce Boat Tail, limited to just three units and boasting an estimated cost of nearly $28M.

Designated for only the most royal of riders, each unique rendition of the Boat Tail is composed of more than 1,800 newly crafted parts which have been created exclusively for the uber elite convertible. This modern mega-cruiser, inspired by the rather peculiar looking 1932 Rolls-Royce Boat Tail (a vehicle well worth a quick web search), brings land yacht ideology into the new millennium with a virtual smorgasbord of cutting edge technology and one-of-a-kind details worthy of a king’s ransom.

The world’s first opportunity to see the new model reveals a beautifully bespoke two-tone blue paint scheme with complementary interior and a cleverly integrated rear deck lid parasol, perfectly paired with built-in tables and matching stools for picnicking with your passenger. The center-hinged wooden hull-inspired trunk lid can be opened remotely and gives way to a gorgeous array of customized crockery and cutlery. The client’s favorite vintage champagne can be stored within the Boat Tail’s double refrigerator, an accessory that has been meticulously calibrated to chill spirits to a sommelier’s specified temperature setting.

The supersized Boat Tail, measuring nearly nineteen-feet long, took more than four years to develop and is completely bespoke based on the commissioning client’s precise specifications. Sharing only the chassis and bodywork (loosely based on the highly-successful Phantom platform), each of the three Rolls-Royce Boat Tail vehicles will be hand-built from sheet aluminum with entirely different appointments and applications. The first version as shown also includes a set of “his and hers” custom Bovet 1822 wristwatches which strategically integrate into the dash to serve as the vehicle’s onboard clocks. The timepieces took an impressive three years to create in collaboration with the British luxury manufacturer.

Rolls-royce debuts yacht-inspired car with shock $30 million price tag.

Rolls-Royce unveiled an open-topped, 1930s yacht-inspired extremely limited-edition model on Monday with a price tag to match a large and luxurious pleasure craft.

The Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail reimagines the carmaker’s typical four-seat sedan as a two-seat roadster — and is expected to run auto aficionados more than $30 million.

Though an exact price isn’t listed, other cars in Rolls-Royce’s coachbuilt line sell for about $28 million. However, the Droptail — of which there will be just four created — costs more to make, a company spokesperson confirmed to Bloomberg .

The Droptail features a low-slung exterior and a crimson interior that draws inspiration from the French Black Baccara rose, which the commissioning owners — thought to be a husband-and-wife duo heading up a prominent family — said is “beloved by the mother,” hence its “La Rose Noire” name.

The Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail debuted on Monday with a yacht-inspired, low-slung construction, custom Audemars Piguet watch mounted to the dashboard and a champagne storage compartment for $30 million.

Inside, the car’s dashboard utilizes over 1,600 pieces of black sycamore wood trim veneer cut into symmetrical triangles and arranged with pops of red designed to mimic rose petals scattering in the wind.

There’s also a champagne storage compartment that stores a bottle of bubbly from the commissioning family’s own vineyard, and a custom Audemars Piguet watch is mounted into the dash but also can be removed and worn.

A timepiece by the Swiss watchmaker alone could cost tens of thousands of dollars. It’s most popular model, the Royal Oak, runs for about $26,200 on Audemars Piguet’s website .

There’s just three buttons on the dashboard, which is minimalist compared to its other vehicles, along with control hazard lights and other quick-control tasks.

The rest of the car’s controls are hidden away in the center console.

The Black Baccara rose also inspires the car’s exterior, which comes in a decadent red hue dubbed “True Love” that Rolls-Royce said took 150 iterations to perfect.

The car's dashboard utilizes over 1,600 pieces of black sycamore wood trim veneer cut into symmetrical triangles and arranged with pops of red designed to mimic rose petals scattering in the wind.

The Droptail’s silhouette comes in at 17 feet long by 6.5 feet wide, smaller that Rolls-Royce’s highly-anticipated, first-ever electric vehicle, which is set to debut by the end of this year for $420,000.

From the back, the Droptail’s lower-to-the-ground construction evokes the figure of a sailing yacht, while the front of the car boasts Rolls-Royce’s well-known Pantheon-style grille.

However, “in a discreet flourish, the reverse surface of the grille’s vanes are painted in ‘True Love’ — a subtle detail that is only visible by way of indirect reflection,” according to the British carmaker.

Aside from the fact that the Droptail is Rolls-Royce’s first two-seater in 100 years, the company said the new model has the most complex construction the luxury carmaker has had since its founding in 1906.

The Droptail reimagines the carmaker's typical four-seat convention as a two-seat roadster -- the luxury carmaker's first two-seater to hit the market in 100 years.

“Its assembly required such intense concentration that the single craftsperson tasked with creating it would only work in one-hour sessions for no more than five hours per day, ensuring they possessed the concentration required for perfect execution,” the company explained.

In total, one Droptail takes “nine months of flawless craftsmanship” to complete, it added.

Rolls-Royce has not revealed any of the Droptail’s performance figures, though it’s powered by the 6.75-Liter V12 engine that’s also under the hood of Rolls-Royce’s Ghost and Phantom models, which can each accelerate to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.

Representatives for Rolls-Royce did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

The Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail debuted on Monday with a yacht-inspired, low-slung construction, custom Audemars Piguet watch mounted to the dashboard and a champagne storage compartment for $30 million.

Rolls-Royce has unveiled a yacht-inspired roadster that it will only make three distinct examples of, each rumored to be worth over $10 million.

The Boat Tail is built on the platform as Rolls-Royce's other models, which seem like bargains under $500,000, but features custom coachwork that took four years to design and execute.

From fenders inspired by a ship's hull to a long, tapering tail topped with wood and stainless steel decking, it looks as much like a Riva motorboat as it does a luxury car.

The most unusual feature on the example revealed by Rolls-Royce is hidden under the deck, which mechanically opens butterfly style to reveal a crystal, porcelain and silver lunch service with champagne refrigerator and cocktail tables that swivel out.

The owner can also deploy a parasol that emerges from the center of the car.

Rolls-Royce has not said who that is or announced how much they paid for the car, but rumors are swirling that it was anywhere from the reported $13 million the company's previous one-off Sweptail coupe reportedly sold for in 2017 to $28 million.

This Is Why The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail Costs $28 Million

4

Rolls-Royce is an absolute staple of the luxury car market. They have developed a reputation for making extremely comfortable and exuberant pieces of engineering. In their years of development and production, Rolls-Royce has unveiled a few limited runs of some very rare and special cars.

Updated October 2021: If you're interested in the ridiculously opulent Rolls-Royce Boat Tail, a fan of its owners, Jay-Z and Beyonce, or just curious about the lifestyles of the super-rich, you'll be pleased to know that we've updated this article with more facts about Rolls-Royce's flagship vehicle.

This comes as Rolls aims to get back into the artistry that is coachbuilding, something which they have been trying to showcase the last few years. The new Rolls-Royce Boat Tail, however, is something else. Priced at a ludicrous $28 Million, it is the most expensive brand-new car ever. With this price tag there comes an extremely limited clientele.

With Jay-Z and Beyonce placing an order , it leaves 2 more up for grabs. So let's take a look to find out why Rolls-Royce has priced the Boat Tail at $28 Million.

Extreme Levels Of Craftsmanship

Rolls-Royce's coachbuilding history is extensive. Since 1904 they have built and crafted some of the most detailed and elegant automobiles for the world's elite. After the release of the sweep tail a couple of years ago, Rolls-Royce dove headfirst into their coachbuilding ancestry.

The original owner of that car flew it out to South America the next day and really used it. This concept inspired the revival of the bespoke coachbuilding from the brand. The British legacy brand has now overtaken the recently announced Bugatti La Voiture Noir as the most expensive new car to date.

Rolls-Royce has tried to change the way we look at cars with the boat tail, it's been hand-crafted extremely intricately to serve more than just the purpose of getting to the destination.

The car is the result of direct inspirations and influence from the original 1932 Boat Tail model and the lines and functions from racing yachts. The revived 'Coachbuild' division of Rolls-Royce says: "Coachbuild presents individuals of extraordinary achievement, culture, and vision to craft an entirely original motor car — and stake claim in the marque’s legendary history. With Coachbuild, one realizes a dream in partnership with the world’s finest designers, engineers, and artisans." And this is something that is reflected in the price point.

Telling the time with digital screens is clearly not chic enough, as the Boat Tail comes with not one but two uniquely "his and hers" handcrafted Bovet swiss timepieces , which can be removed and worn on the wrist. The pair of watches have been exclusively manufactured for the Boat Tail and Bovet says they have no intention of selling them to the public. The price is irrelevant because if you want one of these watches you'll have to buy the car.

The tailgate is the main talking point however because with the touch of a button it opens to reveal a yacht-style deck set up that comes fully loaded with a parasol, cooled champagne holder, and a pair of stools to sit on. It comes loaded with two fridges, plates, and cutlery, making the boat tail, not just a car but an event.

The owners, Jay-Z and Beyonce, love hosting dinner parties, and what could be more perfect than a car with a rear deck that opens into a "hosting suite"? Rolls-Royce's Head of Coachbuild Design, Alex Innes, called it an "engineering marvel". The two lockable panels are hinged at the center and open in a butterfly motion at a 67-degree angle. On the underside, the panels are chrome-covered, and the elaborate interior cabinets are made of carbon fiber.

Once the panels are open, two chests emerge at a 15-degree angle. The one on the right side has a complete set of dishes and silverware, while the one on the left is a double refrigerator, and contains Champagne glasses, napkins, and all other essentials needed for enjoying a fine glass of Champagne. Apparently, Jay-Z and Beyonce are also Champagne enthusiasts, and the car comes stocked up with Armand de Brignac of their favorite vintage. The fridge has even been set to the perfect serving temperature for that specific Champagne.

On each side, there's a rotating cocktail table finished in matching wood, and stowed under them is a pair of folding stools made from leather and carbon fiber. When the panels are open, it's possible to use a parasol that's hidden in the center of the rear deck.

Of course, everything is custom-made and engraved, and according to Rolls-Royce there are no spares, so if any of these things are broken, Rolls-Royce will have to make new ones.

The Boat Tail Has Bespoke Detailing

The Boat Tail is completely bespoke, and every single option is left at the hands of the client. From the color of the trim to the embroidery on the seats, Rolls is not skipping any detail, and as they should for a car with this price tag. It's not quite sure who ordered the other 2 iterations of the Boat Tail, but the one used for all the press shots was commissioned by Jay-Z and Beyonce.

Due to its colors which coincide with their daughter's name and the timepieces being one of the couple's favorite brands, it would make sense then that the price point of this car is no object to one of the richest, most successful couples in the music industry. We are not quite sure who approached who here, but one thing we do know is that when the spec of this car was being chosen, absolutely everything was thought of and personalized. Monogrammed silverware and plates, as well as crystal champagne flutes, help add to this eccentric mix of luxury and engineering.

Rolls's Royce has gone above and beyond to ensure that the Boat Tail is fit for purpose and exactly how the customer imagined it to be, hence the hefty price tag. If you wanted to cut corners, Rolls' newly revived coachbuilding department wouldn't let you, they are driven by extreme detail and the new car shows.

The details continue, as in the glovebox you'll find a completely custom aluminum Mont Blanc pen with a leather case. We must also mention the gorgeous paint that adorns the body of the Boat Tail. A tasteful oceanic blue color is permeated with gleaming crystals that reflect off the changing light conditions to really accentuate the lines of the car. Also, another point of extreme craft is that the body of the boat tail is hammered from a single piece of metal, something which is extremely rare and special in the mass car market of today.

The Boat Tail is one of those cars that blurs the line between automobile and art. The details that Rolls-Royce has undergone to ensure that the boat tail is perfect is truly a marvel of craftsmanship. The most expensive car ever could just be the revival that Rolls-Royce's coachbuilding arm needed. The world is a different place now, and more and more people are now in the market for extremely bespoke and limited cars.

Rolls-Royce’s Tech-Forward Yacht Concept

  • By Kelley Sanford
  • Updated: December 1, 2017

Rolls-Royce, looking to enhance guest comfort and performance without affecting the environment, introduced its 203-foot Crystal Blue yacht and 138-foot support vessel Blue Shadow as a dual-design concept at this month’s Global Superyacht Forum in Amsterdam.

Crystal Blue would use liquefied natural gas (LNG) — which Rolls-Royce describes as a relatively clean, odorless fuel — along with battery power in a system called SAVe-Cube for hybrid propulsion. Twin LNG-powered MTU 16V 4000 M65-N generators and a battery bank would provide 1 megawatt hour of genset-free power at port, the company says. Two Azipull thrusters would push the yacht to a top speed of 20 knots.

“Burning LNG has clear advantages over marine diesel oil for the yacht sector,” Henrik Alpo Sjöblom, project manager for the Rolls-Royce Blue Ocean team, stated in a press release. “There is no smoke, it doesn’t emit any unpleasant odors or fumes, and it meets stringent emissions regulations, allowing yachts to enter otherwise prohibited ecologically sensitive waters.”

Crystal Blue, Rolls-Royce

LNG fuel does have range limitations, a challenge that Rolls-Royce says it addressed with the support-vessel concept Blue Shadow . It would function as Crystal Blue ‘s LNG bunker, carrying fuel reserves to increase her range from 3,000 to 4,400 nautical miles.

Rolls-Royce also designed some unusual elements into the Crystal Blue concept. Her bridge deck, instead of being forward on the main deck, would be belowdecks, where the company says crew could monitor and control the yacht with sensors, cameras, displays and situational-awareness technologies. The system would be based on Rolls-Royce’s Unified Bridge design, which has technology that was used on a remote-controlled commercial tug launched this year.

Crystal Blue, Blue Shadow, Rolls-Royce

With the bridge deck belowdecks, the main deck forward could house guest accommodations with panoramic views. The aft deck would also be focused on the yacht’s 12 guests, with an infinity pool or beach; Blue Shadow would tote Crystal Blue ‘s tender, helicopter and other toys.

A safe room aboard Crystal Blue would provide security for guests and let the 12 crew override controls and operate the yacht, or direct an onshore base to do so, in an emergency.

Also part of the concept: an “intelligent dynamic positioning system” for the twin Rolls-Royce azimuthing thrusters and TT1100 bow thruster. The system would secure the yacht’s position, sans anchor.

Nautical Inspiration: The Boat Tail

  • From Watches To Forks: The Boat Tail's Features And Accessories

Droptail La Rose Noire

Droptail amethyst, droptail arcadia.

The world of ultra-luxury cars is in a galaxy all of its own, with unique design touches and features that are to ordinary cars what high fashion is to regular clothes. The accessories ultra-luxury cars are equipped with are especially weird and wonderful: instead of, say, a first aid kit or a jump starter , you might find something like a falconry set in your Bentley Bentayga, or a champagne chest in your Rolls-Royce.

One of Rolls-Royce’s recent creations, the Boat Tail claims the title of world’s most expensive street legal new car. It was created by the brand’s bespoke coachbuilding program, and is suitably equipped with a host of one-of-a-kind accessories and features, including a complete tableware set. Let’s explore this automotive work of art, along with some of its stablemates from the Coachbuild program.

The Rolls-Royce Coachbuild Program

If Rolls-Royce is already at the pinnacle of luxury , then the Coachbuild program is even higher up in the stratosphere. Taking charge of custom projects for the most selective and deep-pocketed clients, the Coachbuild program builds stunning, one-of-a-kind cars, putting meticulous thought into the smallest detail and accessory.

The Coachbuild program sits one tier above another of Rolls-Royce’s personalization divisions, the Bespoke program . The Bespoke program is aimed at customers who want to make small changes to an existing Rolls-Royce. This could include things like swapping out headliner fabric or mixing a new paint color. The Coachbuild program, as the name suggests, involves a far more radical level of customization, creating a bespoke car from scratch according to the customer’s wishes.

Coachbuilding has been a part of Rolls-Royce since its creation, and the company had an active coachbuilding division during its glory days in the first half of the 20th century. The program’s modern incarnation, however, was created in 2013, when a Hong-Kong-based customer approached the company to commission the car that would become the Sweptail . Over the course of the following decade, the Coachbuild division has expanded and created multiple works of automotive art, the Boat Tail being one of them.

The inspiration behind the Boat Tail comes from two different places: the first is the 1910s Rolls-Royce car of the same name, which the modern Boat Tail pays homage to. The second is the nautical world, more specifically yachts from the 1920s and 30s: the Boat Tail’s striking silhouette evokes the lines used on high-end boats, creating the illusion of movement and dynamism even when the car is stationary. The Boat Tail is not just built for driving or being driven in. It’s also designed to be a comfortable, luxurious place to sit back and enjoy the view, with a hosting suite at the rear of the car that creates a welcoming space for guests.

As is the case with other creations made by the Coachbuild program, the Boat Tail is mostly bespoke, using parts created from scratch rather than using an existing Roller as a base. While working on the Boat Tail, the Coachbuild team created 1,813 components from scratch. Three examples of the Boat Tail have been built, each with its own personalized touches to fulfill the client’s vision: the first is finished in blue, the second in a bronze/rose-gold shade, and the third in a pearlescent beige finish with a darker shade on the hood.

From Watches To Forks: The Boat Tail's Features And Accessories

Like the luxury yachts it takes inspiration from, the Boat Tail is equipped with numerous built-in features and accessories that guarantee the most comfortable, stylish and pleasant experience for its occupants. The stereo, for example, has been custom-built by Bose and uses the car’s own floor structure as a resonance chamber for ultimate sound quality.

One of the most interesting accessories the Boat Tail is equipped with is a full set of tableware, built by luxury French silverware company Christofle. The cutlery isn’t the only feature oriented towards hosting a luxurious picnic on the move: the Boat Tail also comes with not one but two onboard fridges, as well as rotating cocktail tables with matching stool seats. Remember the hosting suite at the rear end of the car? Of course, there’s a relevant item to go with that, too: a built-in parasol pops out in an inverted motion, like a blooming flower, to protect occupants from the sun.

The car also comes with a pair of matching men’s and women’s wristwatches, built by Swiss manufacturer Bovet Fleurier. The watches are, of course, bespoke as well, and include a small sculpture of the car embedded within their dial. As well as being worn like regular wristwatches, these one-of-a-kind creations can also be used as a pocket watch or installed on a desk. There is also a dedicated titanium mount inside the car itself, so that the watches can be placed securely on the dashboard and be used as the car’s clock.

Other Coachbuilt Creations

Over the past decade, the Coachbuild program has been responsible for several other high-profile projects aside from the Boat Tail. These include the Sweptail and the Droptail series, which is going to be made up of four cars in total (three of which have already been released, while the last is still in the pipeline).

The Sweptail kicked off Rolls-Royce’s modern-day Coachbuilt program, a revival of the iconic coachbuilding division that produced several bespoke Rolls in the 20s and 30s. Commissioned in 2013 by a Hong Kong-based client for the eye-watering sum of $13 million, it pays homage to legendary Rolls models of the past, with a heap of vintage-inspired design cues.

Its name echoes its design: a sweeping roofline conveys a sense of movement and energy. The Sweptail is also a testament to the work and dedication of the brand’s new coachbuilding division: nearly every component of the Sweptail, down to the license plate, is bespoke.

La Rose Noire , the very first build in the Droptail series, arrived in 2023. It is notable for being the first ever roadster in Rolls-Royce’s modern history, taking inspiration from classic models such as the 1930 Phantom Brewster New York Roadster and the 1912 Silver Ghost “Sluggard”.

La Rose Noire follows a stylistic theme based on a specific variety of rose that originates in France: the Black Baccara, a striking rose that appears to change color (from a bright, pearlescent red to a dark, almost black shade of red) depending on lighting. The interior is upholstered in red leather to tie the look together.

The second build in the Droptail series is called the Amethyst , after the striking purple-hued gem. The Amethyst was also revealed in August 2023, only a week after La Rose Noire had made its debut. Like its La Rose Noire sibling, the Amethyst also features a wood deck as a replacement for the rear seats.

The (custom, naturally) paint job on the car echoes the gemstone, with a subtle purple tint. The interior is made out of Calamander Light open-pore wood, which was directly provided by the client; this is paired with purple leather to match the car’s exterior.

The third and most recent car in the Droptail series is the Arcadia , which was unveiled at the start of 2024. The name “Arcadia” is taken from the world of Greek mythology, where it refers to a land that represents heaven on earth. Painted in a striking multidimensional white finish, infused with aluminum and glass particles to create a shimmer effect, the Arcadia projects an image of luxurious simplicity and a clean, minimalist aesthetic.

The interior balances out the shimmery white paint with a wood-and-beige-leather finish. The Arcadia is also equipped with a bespoke clock; the clock took five years to build, and its overall development process was over two years long.

The Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II glides into the DMs of the world’s 1 per cent

The Series II version of the ‘Baby Rolls’ has slight but sophisticated revisions to keep this hefty saloon in the targets of an increasingly idiosyncratic and individualist buyer

Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II

Rolls-Royce revealed its Ghost Series II to the world’s media at Château la Coste , choosing to align its newest model with the art, architecture and refinement of this famed Provençal bolthole. Ghost Series II is technically Second Generation Ghost Series II, and it treads the industry’s well-established grooves – launch a car, then facelift it several years in.

Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II

Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II

The first Ghost arrived in 2009 and got its Series II upgrade in 2014. That was followed a few years later by an all-new Ghost and now it’s time for that model to get a discreet nip and tuck, inside and out.

Ghost is the automotive equivalent of a first-rate Georgian townhouse

Although once heralded as the carmaker’s most technologically advanced model, Ghost has been usurped in that department by the all-electric Spectre. It’s certainly not its most outlandish model, for the Ghost was always intended as a slightly more subtle expression of power, wealth and status than the mighty Phantom flagship. The faintly boorish Cullinan is equally unretiring, while the Spectre is OTT is all sorts of other ways.

Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II

Ghost is the automotive equivalent of a first-rate Georgian townhouse, grand and imposing from the outside but still capable of concealing multitudes behind its tasteful façade.

A quick walk around the exterior in the subterranean environs of the Chateau's Renzo Piano pavilion revealed the ‘standard’ car's lightly tweaked styling front and rear. It’s more monolithic than before, with greater emphasis on the vertical surfaces and chamfered edges around the headlights and that famous radiator grille.

Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II

There’s a lot of nautical imagery going on, both on the car itself and on the surrounding mood boards. Thirties yachts and Riviera glamour are key touchpoints and you just know that the average Rolls-Royce customer considers themselves equally at home in both worlds. Finishing it all off is a hand-painted coachline running the length of the vehicle, setting off the proportions with the verve of a chef’s kiss.

Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II Black Badge edition

Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II Black Badge edition

Under the long, long bonnet is still a V12 and nothing more. Rolls doesn’t do hybrids, at least not yet, and the reason for sticking with tried and tested ICE is probably because of the countless thousands of hours that have gone into making this one of the most silent, refined and smooth driving experiences on the road. You’d barely know an engine was there at all, let alone one as large and powerful as a 6.75-litre V12.

As a counterpoint to the standard car, Rolls-Royce also gave us time in the ‘Black Badge’ model, a made-to-order version that scuffs up the polish just a tiny bit to give the car more snap and crackle. It’s hardly a sports car, but it is undeniably more sporting. There’s also the Ghost Extended Series II, with a 170mm longer wheelbase for taller tycoons, which Rolls claims ‘represents an even greater canvas for creativity.’

Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II Black Badge edition

It’s increasingly obvious that quiet and restrained have had their day

Ah, the creativity. It’s understood that you can specify your Rolls-Royce in any colour you like, inside and out. As Juliane Blasi, Head of Exterior Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, explains, ‘our clients asked for a design that would provide a stage for their Bespoke colour and material choices, whether quiet and restrained or bold and expressive.’ It’s increasingly obvious that quiet and restrained have had their day.

As if to accommodate this sudden descent into bold expressionism, Rolls-Royce has started creating press cars that are just as outré as those specified by its more flamboyant customers. The zingy yellow and black interior of the Black Badge model or the fluoro blue detailing on the ‘Duality Twill’ optional cloth seating (both shown here) are just two examples of these ‘fearless and bright celebrations of colour’ that increasingly define the Rolls-Royce portfolio. That includes a colour palette of over 44,000 regular colours as well as the opportunity to colour match whatever you want, at a price.

The hero press car debuted a new colour, a shimmery metallic named Mustique Blue. The finish incorporates glass and mica flakes to get its sparkle and draws on Rolls-Royce endlessly rich portfolio of prior eccentricities, in this case a lightweight 1929 Phantom II Continental prototype built for Henry Royce. It had an early form of pearlescent paint, made using ground fish scales.

It's these little vignettes of wealthy eccentricity that define Rolls-Royce, inside and out. Where the Phantom has its in-dash ‘gallery’, the new Ghost has the Spirit of Ecstasy Clock Cabinet, a blend of Catholic icon kitsch and ultra-high-end interiors. You’ll also see extensive deployment of the Starlight Headliner across the Ghost range – once considered an extravagant optional extra but now so commonplace that it’s surprising to step into a Rolls-Royce without one. You can also have your own constellation of twinkling stars scattered across the dashboard with the upgraded Illuminated Fascia.

Illuminated Fascia in the Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II

Illuminated Fascia in the Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II

Better connectivity now comes as standard, with twin rear screens that can receive independent media streams, and all the seat functions (heating, cooling, massage) can also be accessed via the interface. Up front, there’s direct integration with Whispers, the Rolls-Royce private members’ application, which presumably functions as a chatroom for the well-heeled. The soundproofing and vibration damping give the interior near-perfect acoustic properties for the multi-speaker sound system.

Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II

For fans of sybaritic statistics, the Duality Twill rayon fabric (made from bamboo) provides a talking point. Specify it, and you’ll have committed Rolls-Royce’s team to making 2.2 million stitches and use 11 miles of thread. The end result is still a little gauche when deployed with contrasting colours, but subtler schemes are also available. Leather seats can be patterned with a special perforation technique.

Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II

Inside Black Badge, things are even more dazzling. Along with carbon fibre elements (that most un-Rolls-Royce of materials) the inspiration is more Miami Vice than Art Basel , with white bodywork paired with acid-yellow leather inserts. Black Badge is undeniably more fun to drive, with a swifter throttle response, more grunt and less waft. If you employ a chauffeur, the enhancements probably aren’t worth it.

Rolls-Royce has retained its crown as the first choice of royalty, whether their realm is a kingdom, industry or fandom. As wealth has evolved it has taken taste on a journey into the outer reaches of creativity. To its credit, Rolls-Royce has never shied away from keeping up, correctly surmising that modern-day Gatsbys are best kept close, lest they slip away to a competitor. Prices are unpublished and indulgence in expensive options is positively encouraged. Nevertheless, Ghost Series II should keep the wealthy sufficiently distracted until the next best thing comes along.

Rolls-Royce Passes Critical Design Review for F130 Engine, Approaches B-52J Integration

Following two years of design collaboration with the U.S. Air Force and Boeing, the F130 aircraft engine will soon enter production for the B-52J Stratofortress.

Rolls-Royce successfully completed a critical design review (CDR) for the F130 engine, with its engine testing program scheduled to begin altitude testing in February 2025 at the U.S. Air Force’s Arnold Engineering Development Complex in Tullahoma, TN.

“We’re proud to have delivered the F130 CDR milestone on-time for the B-52J, and grateful for our continued partnership with the U.S. Air Force and Boeing,” said Candice Bineyard, Director, Early Life Cycle & Naval Programs – Defense. “Throughout the detailed design phase, our teams have executed a rigorous process in close collaboration with our partners. We’re excited to start the production work to deliver this engine for the B-52J.”

Passing the CDR opens the pathway for culminating development, test, and production work to deliver an upgraded B-52J Stratofortress to the U.S. Air Force. This milestone follows more than two years of detailed design work and cooperation between teams at Rolls-Royce, the Air Force, and Boeing.

In early August 2024, Rolls-Royce began testing the F130 engine in a dual-pod configuration Testing at NASA Stennis helped Rolls-Royce meet initial testing goals and engine-delivery pace set by the Air Force. Test data informed the production configuration for the F130 engine’s CDR.

The tests produced performance data, validating Rolls-Royce’s predictions on crosswind conditions and de-risking F130 integration on the B-52J. The engines will extend B-52 aircraft life by 30 years, as their durability enables it to remain on wing for the remainder of aircraft life. Sea-level testing, conducted in the refurbished Test Cell 114, will run the F130’s initial software release. Rolls-Royce also successfully performed rapid twin pod tests.

Test Cell 114 is a new facility that supports development testing and production acceptance. Rolls-Royce refurbished the facility as part of a $1 billion investment to modernize Indianapolis facilities, delivering advanced manufacturing to the Air Force and additional customers. F130 engines will be manufactured, assembled, and tested in Indianapolis.

Rolls-Royce News

In September, Rolls-Royce Power Systems and Lürssen Yacht Refit & Services signed a framework agreement to regulate co-operation in mtu propulsion system overhauls and improve services for yacht customers. Currently, technicians and specialists from both companies overhaul the entire mtu propulsion system—from engine to the NautIQ ship automation system. This joint package prioritizes a speedy refit process to return the ship to its owner.

The framework agreement reorganizes the cooperation, accelerates processes, simplifies procedures, and defines common standards for overhaul work. It will reduce time spent on engine and propulsion system overhaul work, particularly for mtu Series 4000 engines. The contract also ensures faster, more flexible deployment of Rolls-Royce specialists at Lürssen’s shipyard and increased spare part availability. Lürssen technicians will be trained to work on mtu engines in alignment with Rolls-Royce standards.

And in late October, Rolls-Royce announced that it is developing new mtu energy and automation solutions for current and future submarine models, including:

  • an upgraded, higher-power submarine charging unit; and
  • NautIQ automation systems for subsea ship control and monitoring.

Rolls-Royce’s new concept involves an on-board power generator driven by the planned 20-cylinder version of the mtu Series 4000 submarine engine. The new model will have a higher power output, enabling faster battery-charge times and reducing the submarine’s surface exposure. Also, the compact design minimizes footprint in the hull by eliminating the need for an extra genset.

Regarding selling luxury cars, brands like Ferrari (NYSE: RACE ), Rolls-Royce and Maserati use strategies that are as extravagant as their vehicles. These automakers know how to make their cars irresistible – and sometimes even make their customers feel like they're getting a deal when doing the company's work for them.

Take Ferrari, for instance. A prominent marketing expert, Rory Sutherland, pointed out how the brand has devised a smart way to shift delivery costs onto its customers while framing it as an exclusive experience. The company can deliver a Ferrari to your local dealership for free if you buy it. But for around £500 ($630), you can opt for a “factory tour” in Maranello, Italy, where you pick up your car and drive it home at your own cost.

Don't Miss:

Deloitte's fastest-growing software company partnered with Amazon, Walmart & Target announces the deadline to invest this year is 12/20. – Last Chance to get 4,000 of its pre-IPO shares for just $0.26/share!

The global games market is projected to generate $272B by the end of the year — for $0.55/share, this VC-backed startup with a 7M+ userbase gives investors easy access to this asset market.

Customers willingly pay to collect their cars because the experience is marketed as a unique privilege. It looks like a brilliant psychological play that makes customers feel special while cutting Ferrari's costs.

Meanwhile, according to Sutherland, Rolls-Royce and Maserati took a different approach to make their luxury cars seem like impulse buys. Instead of showcasing their vehicles at traditional car shows – where their high price tags stand out – they moved to yacht and private jet shows. The logic? If you've spent all day looking at multimillion-dollar yachts and jets, a $250,000 car suddenly feels like a much smaller expense – an impulse buy.

Ferrari is also making bold moves into cryptocurrency payments . After successfully rolling out crypto payments in the U.S., the brand expanded the option to Europe in July. Partnering with BitPay, Ferrari now accepts Bitcoin, Ethereum and USD Coin for its cars, instantly converting the payments to traditional currency. According to the company’s representative, this was done in response to consumer demand and to suit the tastes of their affluent, tech-savvy audience. By the end of 2024, Ferrari plans to offer crypto payments globally where legally permitted.

Ferrari isn't stopping there. The brand is gearing up to launch its first electric supercar in the fourth quarter of 2025. Ferrari ensures its EVs maintain the brand’s signature appeal with a new factory in Maranello dedicated to hybrid and electric vehicles and a state-of-the-art lithium battery research lab.

Trending: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — you can become an investor for $0.80 per share today.

CEO Benedetto Vigna is reinventing the sound of electric motors to preserve the classic sensory experience of driving a Ferrari. Ferrari is placing a big bet on strong consumer interest across age groups to compete with market leaders like Tesla.

Even as Ferrari accelerates into the future, its financial performance remains strong. The automaker reported an 11% year-over-year sales growth in Q1 2024, bringing in $1.72 billion in revenue. Shipments held steady at 3,560 units and Ferrari is on track for fiscal 2024 net revenues exceeding €6.4 billion.

Whether paying to pick up your car, splurging on a $250,000 vehicle after looking at luxury yachts or buying a Ferrari with Bitcoin, one thing stands out: luxury car brands know how to keep people coming back. They use smart strategies, cool technology and new financial trends to stay ahead in the world of high-end cars.
