A billionaire who is the heir to a massive fortune recently pulled his yacht into Kinsale in the hopes of getting a pint.
Superyacht 'Scout' is anchored outside of the famous Dock pub, inhabiting a lot of the Castlepark Marina, becoming the first superyacht of the summer to visit Cork Harbour, Cork Beo reports.
The 209ft superyacht was made in Holland in 2019 - supposedly commissioned by members of the Heineken family (yes, THAT Heineken) but purchased by American James Berwind in 2020 for close to €80 million.

Up to 10 guests and 14 staff can be accommodated. It is considered one of the coolest yachts in the world. It has amenities such as a fully equipped gym, cinema room, three bars and a large sun deck with a jacuzzi.
Owner James Berwind (believed to be in Kinsale with his beloved Scout, has an interesting story of his own).
The Florida man is an heir to a vast, shared family fortune and with his brothers and sisters, co-owns an international global corporation.
His famous forebears Edward Julius and Charles Frederick Berwind were the founders of the Berwind-White Coal Mining company in America in the 1860s.
This developed into a mining conglomerate that it still privately kept in a family trust today.
It has moved into areas including manufacturing and real estate. The Berwind Corporation's real estate holdings alone are worth an estimated $3 billion.
James Berwind and his long-time partner Kevin Clark have given their lives to philanthropy, with animal welfare and environmentalism to the fore.
His father Charles Graham Berwind was in the coal business and enjoyed polo and yachting.
With a net worth of around €500 million, James Berwind is an architect supporting projects and people involved in environmental and community development worldwide.
He is reported to have made the yacht Scout a "semi-permanent home, to be used to explore the world" along with his long-term partner Kevin Clark. And you might see the man around Kinsale over the coming days, the yacht has dropped in after a visit to Dublin and will be on its way again shortly.

Meet the Cork man designing the next generation of eco-friendly Superyachts in Kinsale
Luxury giants of the ocean with cutting-edge technology - but the price tag can come in at €80m

In a small office down a lane in Kinsale, Rob Doyle and his team are working at the leading edge of super-yacht design, building the boats coveted by billionaires around the world.
Rob's designs regularly feature in the magazines you'll only find on the coffee tables of billionaire boat owners who covet his designs to go alongside the Learjet at the airport and the Bugatti Veyron on the drive.
Over a career that brought him from his native Passage West to the US and back to Kinsale in the late '90s, Rob has been a designer on just under 40 super-yachts and was on the team that built what was for many years the world's biggest sailing yacht, the 78-metre M5 , built by legendary boat-builder Ron Howard for billionaire Texas oilman Ron Lewis.
Now Rob and his small team of four, together with their partners in Holland (a Dutch Irish couple who met while working for him in Kinsale) are working on their most ambitious project yet.
Code-named 'Project Fury', it's an ocean-going luxury thoroughbred, faster than most sailboats afloat, able to comfortably sleep and cater for 12 guests and 11 crew and capable of travelling the world's oceans with no diesel engines required.
Project Fury is being designed and built as the next generation of ultra-yachts, a 63-metre racing yacht that can also accommodate up to 12 people in total luxury, inside a wide, super-light hull made from a combination of aluminium and space-age materials.
With a projected cost of around €80m each, these yachts will not be cheap. But they will be eco-friendly.
Talking to CorkBeo, Rob explained that the boats will have no conventional diesel engines, but will instead have electric propulsion to back up the sails, with batteries that recharge as the props are 'dragged' in the water while the boat is under wind-power.
"We're also looking a military-grade technology which would allow the boats to generate their own hydrogen for fuel-cells, which would mean truly clean energy," he said.
"It's the way things are going now, the owners of these superyachts want to be green and they want to be seen to be green.
"And there's always the element of having something better and newer than the other guy, to be able to say that you can run without diesel engines, that you have the latest, the fastest, the most cutting-edge."
With the ability to cruise endlessly around the world's oceans, comfortably fitting in a billionaire and his family and friends, generating their own fuel and water, the only real need to come into harbour would be to stock up on the Bollinger and caviar.
And Rob says that's what a lot of his clients like to do in Cork.
"These types of boats do come into Kinsale and into Cork harbour quite often, it's actually a very popular place to visit, it's not like the madness of Monaco, St Tropez or the real hot-spots in the Med."
"And I do know owners who will go into the English Market for a stroll to pick out the best to eat, but they'll also spend a huge amount on re-provisioning the boats in Cork."
The odd super-yacht owner has been known to fly their deck-helicopter off to the Old Head of Kinsale for a round of golf, but Rob says they prefer to keep it low key.
"They are typically not the kind of people who look for attention themselves, they'll slip in with the family and friends, have a walk around Kinsale, but stay pretty low key."
Rob says Ireland has long punched well above its weight at the highest level of boat design - and crewing.
"You'll find Irish captains and Irish design expertise everywhere there are boats around in the world, for such a small country, we have a big reputation when it comes to people and skills."
"I know people might have pretty strong opinions on billionaires spending tens of millions on boats. But you could look at it as a very effective means of wealth transfer.
"The money they spend keeps thousands of highly skilled people in work, in yards and harbours in Ireland and around the world."
With Project Fury, Rob and the team in Cork and partners in Holland, Peter and Tracey Van Geest (a couple who met while working with Rob in Kinsale) are looking at attracting the kind of customers that are politely called 'high net worth individuals' - the world's super-rich.
It's not just the price tag of around €80m for the basic boat - it's also the running costs, which can be up to 10% of the cost of the boat - per year (that's a cool 8 million a year to pay for everything from insurance and berthing to sails and crew).
But Rob does not expect to be hunting around for customers. His problem could well be that he cannot build the boats fast enough.
"During the recession and in the first days of the pandemic, people did not want to be seen to be spending huge amounts of money on yachts," says the Kinsale based naval architect and yacht designer.
"But now that the economy is revving again, there's a huge pent-up demand for new yachts, and these high-net-worth individuals are competing to get the latest and the best.
"We have been talking to the big yards and they are saying an order put in now might not see a boat delivered until 2025."
Rob has already had six pretty strong enquiries about his latest design, the long-awaited 'Project Fury' which is causing a huge stir in the yachting world.
Designed in Cork, these yachts will set the new standard for the hyper-yacht, combining speed, luxury and space in a cutting-edge hull that is suprisingly green.
Rob's big hope is to see one of their giant Fury boats in the harbour in Kinsale before too long. And if you want to put your name down for one of his boats, check out Rob Doyle Design (maybe the Credit Union can help out with a loan).

$300m superyacht belonging to Walmart heiress sails into Irish town
A superyacht believed to belong to one of the heirs of the Walmart fortune, Nancy Walton Laurie, sailed into the quiet harbor of Kinsale, Co Cork.
The yacht was - quite easily - spotted by locals early on Monday morning. Fisherman Eamon O'Neill snapped a photo of the vessel and shared it on the town's online community noticeboard, where Walton Laurie was pinpointed as the owner.
Kaos is a $300million superyacht with four decks, a helipad, spa, swimming pool, cinema, aquarium and room for 31 guests and 45 crew members, according to the Yacht Bible directory.

It also reportedly has the most marble and stone ever installed on a yacht and was previously owned by the Qatari royal family.
Walton Laurie reportedly bought the 361-foot vessel in 2019. The youngest daughter of Walmart co-founder James "Bud" Walton, the 72-year-old has an estimated net worth of $8.6billion.
She and her sister Ann Walton Kroenke inherited a stake in the famous US company, now the world's largest retailer, after their father's death in 1995.
Walton Laurie is also a philanthropist and the founder of a New York-based dance group, as well the the Columbia Performing Arts Centre in Missouri, where the sisters grew up.
Kaos was recently spotted docking in London, which is a short sail from the Irish coast.
A short drive from Cork City and the starting point of the Wild Atlantic Way , Kinsale is popular spot amongst tourists, with many celebrities, from Michael Jackson to Julia Roberts, visiting the seaside town over the years.
Commenting on the arrival of yacht online, locals called it "magnificent" and "a gem".
"I hope she enjoys her stay in this beautiful part of our amazing country," one Facebook user wrote. Another added: "She has great taste!"

THE people of Kinsale are used to seeing super yachts but a real ‘superyacht’, the ‘Galileo G’, arrived in the harbour this week.
The massive yacht makes for a fine spectacle on the seascape, in the heart of the town. People were flocking to the water’s edge on Tuesday and Wednesday to check out the 55m beauty that can accommodate 10 guests and 12 crew. The ‘Galileo G’ is a motor yacht that was custom-built in 2011 by the Perini Navi Group. It has been greatly admired for its steel hull and aluminium superstructure, complete with a beam of 10.40m, and a 3.00m draft.
It is powered by two caterpillar engines and has a cruising speed of 11 knots, but is capable of 14 knots, giving it a range of 9,000 nautical miles from her 150,000 litre fuel tanks.

Walmart billionaire’s €300m superyacht moored off Dún Laoghaire coast
Heiress’s luxury vessel comes complete with a heli pad, swimming pool and 16 cabins.

A superyacht belonging to one of the wealthiest women in the world was sighted on Tuesday moored in Scotsman’s Bay, off Dún Laoghaire, providing a rare treat for the harbour’s yacht spotters.
The 110-metre, €300 million Kaos is reportedly owned by Nancy Walton Laurie, heiress to the Walmart US retail empire.
Weighing in at 4,523 tons, it has impressive features including 16 cabins, a gym, a steam room, an indoor beach club, a cinema, a sauna, and a spa. There is also a swimming pool and a helipad.
The yacht’s interiors are known for their lavish style which includes marble and stone fittings, and custom-made silk carpets.

The yacht was recently seen in London and Cornwall before making its way to Dún Laoghaire.
According to Superyacht Times, Kaos was formerly known as Jubilee, and was launched in 2017, as the largest yacht ever built in the Netherlands.
“The exterior features a combination of curved lines and glass panels in the bulwarks is visually stunning to create an illusion of extra decks and a trompe l’oeil effect where the yacht appears long and lean. Metallic paint enhances reflected sunlight on these curved lines,” the publication said.
It was the second large private yacht to visit the Dublin in recent weeks and follows the more modest €80 million Scout which was moored in the Liffey and visited Kinsale.

Scout, also a Dutch-built vessel, was launched in 2019 for James Berwind, whose family made a fortune out of coal and mining. He now engages in social entrepreneurship and is reported to have a passion for animal welfare.
Berwind and his partner Kevin Clark designed Scout, which is named after the couple’s dog, to be a semi-permanent base from which they can explore the world.
The superyacht visits come at the beginning of what is expected to be a busy season for cruise ships at the historic south Dublin port town.
Mary Hanafin, former Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown council, said more than 90 ships will visit Dún Laoghaire this year. During her tenure as Cathaoirleach, which concluded this week, Ms Hanafin said she visited three ships which were first-time arrivals in Dún Laoghaire. She said the cruise ships which she visited were two small luxury vessels which can accommodate 500 to 600 passengers, and one larger ship which could accommodate some 3,200 passengers and 1,400 crew.
Ms Hanafin said the local authority which controls the harbour receives fees for boats moored offshore while power boat owners also received fees for escorting tenders.
She said while some passengers went on to Dublin or Glendalough, many remained in Dún Laoghaire Town and spent money on gifts. She said the council has set up and tourist information and gift shops as well as a reception area in the harbour.

Push the boat out: Top design and finishes at Kinsale's Watersland launching at €1.275m
Just launching: Kinsale's Watersland with four detacheds coming for sale at €1.275m via Sherry FitzGerald Brennan Busteed. Pictures: Jakub Walutek
The benefits of giving a good architect pretty much free rein in both the house and the interiors design brief, plus an open budget, for a niche new homes development can be seen at Kinsale’s just-launching high-end scheme, Watersland, with a showhouse done up to nth degree.
Behind the look and feel of the design-led and upmarket project is Bandon-based architect Una O’Sullivan, who has been designing quality homes and small schemes in wider West Cork for 30 years. It possibly also helped that she’s married to one of the co-developers, Ed Brennan, whose Brennan siblings are also in the wider business sphere in Kinsale, Innishannon and Bandon, developing as B Partnership.
Among the Brennans’ interests are the yacht marina at Kinsale’s Castlepark, now almost a cypher for Kinsale’s high-end appeal to salty types, superyacht owners and the super-rich.
As well as developments in Bandon, they’ve also got a residential site in the pipeline in Innishannon but, for now, it’s all eyes on Waterland, and Kinsale, where they’ve metaphorically and almost literally pushed the boat out, with an unstinting budget.
(Speaking of pushing the boat out, the Castlepark Marina was the periodic summer berthing spot for the €80m superyacht, Scout , as its owner US billionaire James Berwin and his husband, Kevin Clark, saw through their purchase of Sprayfield House in Kinsale’s chi-chi Sandycove.
The long-time home of former UCC president Gerry Wrixon on 40 acres, the Georgian gem, Sprayfield, sold for c €4.5m via Savills after a May launch as exclusively reported in the Irish Examiner in July. It now appears on the Price Register at €3.8m for the house on one acre, with the balance up to €4.5m accounted for by the waterfront acreage, paddocks and tennis court.)
Meanwhile, launching this weekend at a “more affordable” level are the first of four detached “forever family homes” in a run of six detacheds in this development, Watersland, high above the town under Barrack Hill, with a further phase/s of smaller homes set to follow.
But, for now, it is best foot forward and, it seems, shod in the property equivalent of Christian Louboutin heels, red soles and all.
Indicative of the sort of internationally mobile buyers targeted here (along with well-heeled locals, of course) have been the teaser ads for Watersland running in the House & Home pages of the Financial Times since early in the spring of 2023 and, now, there’s proven product on the ground to step into and try for size.
At the risk of hyperbole, after a walk around architect Una O’Sullivan’s showhouse, the 16m deep, south-to-north depth floor plan in the A1 type 2,470 sq ft five-bed has to be one of the best around.
It’s like some sort of alchemy how spacious it’s been crafted to feel, with internal glazing serving as dividing walls in sections (in oak frames made by Southwood Joinery), with four first floor double bedrooms, two with en suites, and not a pinched bit of space on either level.
Also, the next five, the A2 type, will be very slightly smaller than the A1 show home, by just 4.5sq m or so. (One of these five homes is reserved and the show-house seen here is already taken.)
That adjustment will see the ground floor corner window projection in the main front reception room drawn back in, the bedroom overhead not having a corner window, and the loss of a very slight bay projection in the side of the A1 type’s dining section midships.
The tweaks and slight, fractional reduction in size were necessary to allot more privacy to adjoining houses, Nos 2-5, Una explains, with the “best in show”, No 1 having the benefit of a corner site at the development entrance, ringed by exceptional quality drystone style boundary walls, with the stone on the vertical, admired and then copied from a recent development the couple had seen in Clonakilty.
Location is above the Cork road into Kinsale, away from the town’s throng (but, also away from the water: top floor rooms get a glimpse to the harbour mouth), near the national school and the local Lidl, and it’s across the road from the very popular Admiral’s Walk compact development of terraced three-storey homes, built in 2002 to a design by another local architect, Richard Rainey. The most recent resale there was of No 6, 18 months ago, for a recorded €560,000.
Watersland is going to raise the bar far, far higher, it appears, and not just because the detached homes are considerably larger, as well as being A2 energy rated, future proofed for generations to come in homes which will be energy efficient, with concrete slab floors and underfloor heating at the lower two levels, all super-low in running costs — just as well as the starting point price-wise is €1.275m with what’s generally known as a “builder’s finish”, excluding kitchens, robes, flooring and tiling entailing further spending.
This is Kinsale, so there’s good interest expected by the developer and selling agent, Sherry Fitzgerald’s Don Brennan (no relation to the developers) and the amount of €1m+ offers and sales in and around Kinsale has been well chronicled in recent times.
Case in point? Engel & Voelkers have just launched a 88 sq m two-bed semi-d, a prized former Council property on the High Road at Ardbrack, with stunning views, at €1.35m.
It’s less than a month since The Belvedere with 13 homes launched on the western side of Kinsale, with five €1.5m+ houses being offered, two sales are agreed and another done deal at €950,000 for a 195 sq m home, and most of those are three-beds, with an appeal to traders down, small families, and relocators.
Of possible interest to those looking at the high end of the wider Cork market, Watersland developers the Brennans have done number crunching on some current high-end schemes.
Watersland comes in at €537 per sq ft but that’s with a builder’s finish, so, more realistically at €568 per sq ft, assuming a “modest” €75,000 fit-out, with features such as increased glazing, zinc finishes, site works on a sloping site and more contemporary design likely to have pushed its costs up.
VERDICT: If these considered, bright, best in class, high-end family living A-types are out of your league, a launch of B four-bed types will follow in 2024.
