Up River Yacht Club

West Mersea

Probably the liveliest sailing centre on the East Coast. Steeped in history with a great sailing and fishing heritage. Famous for its oysters. An easy day sail from Up River with access at all states of the tide via a well buoyed channel. The creeks offer good protection from all wind directions and extensive deep water moorings.

Food and drink

Several pubs, cafes and restaurants within a few hundred metres of the landing stage. In addition, the West Mersea Yacht Club (open 7 days a week) offers a great menu and beer at £2.40 a pint (who needs Wetherspoons!).

No tenders required

The club has full time launches that operate as water taxis for members and visitors from 8am to 11.00pm. Tip; call them on Channel 37 on arrival and they will show you to a vacant mooring. Then call them up to be taken ashore and keep their mobile numbers to hand to call them again to get a lift back to your boat, £2 per person per journey. But free return to your boat if you eat or drink at the Yacht Club.

The waterfront

Those famous houseboats, thriving dinghy and sailing training centre. Authentic quality fish restaurants; notably ‘ The Company Shed ’ during the day and ‘ The Oyster Bar ’  for evening meals. Reservations essential.

Picture postcard fisherman’s cottages. Some nice coastal walks .  Easily accessible clean dog friendly beach. Coastal park and paths. Small town with the usual local facilities. Buses to Colchester.

Welcome to the West Mersea Yacht Club, established in 1899 and one of the premier Yacht Clubs on the East Coast.

We run a full racing and cruising programme throughout the season, and our bar and restaurant service is open to members and visiting yachtspeople seven days a week. Members are conveyed to their boats by two Club launches that serve the Mersea moorings, with the launch service again being seven days a week in the season.

There are two small settlements on the Mersea Island called West Mersea and East Mersea. The region is intensively involved in oyster cultivation. Guests of the marina are recommended to visit the gorgeous town Colchester where many attractions, landmarks and things to do are available for tourists. For those who enjoy spending long hours in nature The Beth Chatto Gardens is a delightful place to visit. The garden is a haven of flowers, fabulous plants and trees. It might take a while before you decide to leave this place, because the magical array of fragrances and colors is mesmerizing. Visitors, who walk on the alleys of The Beth Chatto Gardens, have the opportunity to feel the serenity offered by nature’s gifts. A short glimpse of history can be caught by tourists while visiting Paycocke's, a National Trust Property.

About west mersea marine

West Mersea Marine is a family run boatyard on Mersea Island – a beautiful, tranquil setting on the River Blackwater on the East Coast of England.

We provide mooring rental, boat storage, boat handling and general boat and yard work…we will also soon be offering a boat sales service.

Our secure yard is fully equipped with CCTV, toilets, shower facilities, electric meters, water supply and barrier protected vehicular access allowing for customer parking where available.

We provide over 200 moorings throughout Mersea Fleet, Mersea Quarters, Thorn Fleet, Salcott Channel and Ray Channel – Accommodating a wide variety of vessels from 15ft ribs to 40ft yachts. We have a selection of mooring options including moorings on piles, half tide edge moorings, deep water swinging moorings, deep water pontoon moorings and drive on rib dock moorings.

We have proudly served local yachtsmen and women for decades. West Mersea is a sailing haven. Ray Island lies adjacent to the north of Mersea whilst Packing Shed Island and Cobmarsh Island lie southwest. To the Eastern end of Mersea Island lies a large bird sanctuary where you can see a wide selection of wading and migratory birds. It’s a short journey from Mersea Island to the river Colne, Brightlingsea and the Walton Backwaters, the Orwell and the Stour. Within the Blackwater lies Osea Island, Bradwell on Sea, Maylandsea & Maldon. Further south is Burnham and the Thames Estuary.

Launch services are run by West Mersea Yacht Club and Stacey Belbin of Lady Grace from the hammerhead pontoon, Coast Road. (Yacht club launch is for WMYC members and visitors only).

There is an abundance of places to eat, drink and visit on Mersea including a fantastic selection of restaurants, cafes, takeaways, shops, supermarkets, delicatessens, a vineyard, a brewery, a museum, a country park and much more. Please see the useful links section for more details.

Mersea Week 2024

West Mersea Yacht Club

This year's 50th anniversary of Mersea Week is about so much more than a Regatta. Together we will celebrate dedicated sailors and supporters filled with passion for this event that started out simply as a joint club Regatta and has grown to one of the largest Regattas held annually on the East Coast.

In 2024 besides our usual classes of keelboats, Classics, Smacks, IRC, Sonata, dinghies and MFOB we will be organising within the week some special events celebrating those classes. These are

The IRC East Coast Championship, all five days, with own class start and courses

The National Sonata East Coast Championship all five days, with own class start and courses

ILCA Open Regatta 3 days of racing

The Sunk race organised by EAORA will be finished at West Mersea on 17th August, with moorings available to allow boats to stay and participate in Mersea Week from 18th August. We plan to have the Notice of Race published and entry open from 1st February 2024. Early Bird entry to be open to 31st May 2024, with entry closing on 11th August. To enter use this link.
