Steam into the Past
Board an old-fashioned steam-powered vessel for a half-mile journey into the heart of the American frontier.
During the charming, 14-minute trip around Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island , spot delightful sights along the river’s edge, including:
- The north bank of the Columbia Gorge, complete with a beautiful waterfront and 5 sparkling waterfalls
- A rustic frontier cabin
- An idyllic Native American village
- A busy beaver at work chewing on the train trestle
- Mountain lions relaxing in the sun
- The Disneyland Railroad steaming into the wilderness
Along the way, hear lively narration about a time gone by.
Along the Mississippi
The Mark Twain is an authentic reproduction of the historic vessels that ferried people up and down the mighty Mississippi River. A working steam engine converts the water from the Rivers of America into steam that in turn powers the large paddle that propels the boat.
Featuring meticulously detailed wood craftsmanship, the 28-foot tall, 105-foot-long riverboat is comprised of 4 pristine decks:
- Pilothouse , also known as the top deck, features the wheelhouse and Captain’s Quarters
- Promenade Deck includes a salon and a collection of vintage photos and maps
- Texas (or Sun) Deck is the perfect place to enjoy the outdoors as you float down the river
- Main Deck includes the boiler and pistons that run the paddlewheel
Limited seating is available.
A Tribute to America’s Writer
Walt Disney named the Mark Twain after the pen name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens. The famed author of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn —and Walt’s personal hero—Clemens was also a riverboat pilot as a young man.
That experience inspired his pen name: “mark twain” is a boating term that means a vessel is at a safe depth.

Two disney attractions extend closure dates significantly after winter storms.
Posted by: Eva Miller February 10, 2024
In recent news, it has come to light that two beloved rides at the prestigious Disneyland Resort have experienced significant delays in their refurbishments, much to the disappointment of eager visitors. These two attractions are important landmark attractions of Disneyland Resort, and fans will no doubt miss them while they remain closed for longer than expected.

Closures Continue for Two Iconic Rides
The Mark Twain riverboat, a cherished attraction that takes guests on a leisurely cruise around the scenic Rivers of America, offers a unique and immersive glimpse into the charm and grandeur of a bygone era. As part of Disneyland’s commitment to ensuring the highest standards of guest satisfaction, periodic refurbishments are necessary to maintain the vessel’s impeccable appearance and operational efficiency.
The ride was initially closed from September 17, 2023, until February 10, 2024. Now, that reopening date will be extended by two days. The extension of the Mark Twain refurbishment until February 23 reflects the meticulous attention to detail the park invests in preserving the timeless allure of this classic experience.
Similarly, the Astro Orbiter, an exhilarating rocket-themed attraction that allows daredevil visitors to soar high above Tomorrowland, has also faced unexpected delays i n its refurbishment process. This delay, which was meant to open on March 8, 2024, is now extending until March 14.

This extension highlights the park’s dedication to delivering an exceptional experience for every guest. It’s evident that Disneyland takes great care in ensuring that all of its attractions are in peak condition, upholding its reputation as the epitome of excellence in the realm of amusement parks.
Did Cali Weather Play a Part?
While inconvenient for those eagerly anticipating the reopening of these two popular Disney Park attractions, it’s important to remember that these refurbishments are ultimately undertaken with the aim of enhancing the overall guest experience. By investing time and resources into the careful preservation and maintenance of Disneyland ride refurbishment, Disneyland Resort shows its unwavering commitment to providing visitors with unparalleled moments of joy and wonder in Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park.
Mark Twain refurb extended to 2/23, Astro Orbiter extended to 3/14 likely due to rain delays by u/themeparkiq in Disneyland
Many people believe that the reason for these extended closures could be due to the severe winter rain storms that plummeted Southern California last week. It is easy to deduce that this weather played a part in delaying Disney’s construction efforts in each attraction.
The extension of the refurbishments for the Mark Twain riverboat and the Astro Orbiter at Disneyland Resort underscores the park’s unwavering dedication to ensuring the highest quality experiences for its beloved guests. Despite the disappointment of the delays, it is clear that these refurbishments are necessary to maintain the charm and operational excellence of these iconic attractions. As the new reopening dates of February 23 and March 14 approach, visitors can look forward to enjoying these rides in all their splendor and immersing themselves in the magic that only Disneyland can provide after these Disneyland Ride closures are done.

Mark Twain Riverboat
An Attraction in Disneyland
Last updated: May 3, 2023
At a Glance
This large-capacity paddle-wheel riverboat navigates the waters around Tom Sawyer Island and Fort Wilderness. A beautiful craft, the riverboat provides a lofty perch from which to see Frontierland and New Orleans Square. The Mark Twain, Sailing Ship Columbia , and Davy Crockett's Explorer Canoes travel through the Rivers of America. The show scenes include a home for Mike Fink (and one of his keelboats, a former Disneyland attraction) and 26 Audio-Animatronic animals; the audio spiel includes a musical nod to the New Orleans–set The Princess and the Frog.

Touring Tips
One of three boat rides that survey the same real estate. Because the Explorer Canoes are slower in loading and the Columbia operates seasonally, we think the riverboat makes more efficient use of touring time. If you’re not in the mood for a boat ride, many of the same sights can be seen by hiking around Tom Sawyer Island. The riverboat typically operates until 75 minutes before the park closes, except on Fantasmic! performance nights, when the voyages end at 5:45 p.m. If you’re looking for a new experience aboard the Mark Twain, try asking a cast member if you can enjoy the trip from the pilothouse.

PHOTOS: Disneyland’s Mark Twain Riverboat is Down for Refurbishment!
by Cassie Agundes · October 18, 2023
What are your “must-dos” when visiting Disneyland Park? We have several!
Each time we visit, we have to spin on King Arthur’s Carrousel, toboggan down Matterhorn mountain, attempt to be the rebel spy on Star Tours, and cruise down the Rivers of America. If you also have a boat ride on your must-do list, you’ll want to check out the new refurbishment in the park.
Mark Twain Riverboat
The Mark Twain Riverboat is currently down for refurbishment! If you’ve visited the park recently, you probably noticed the giant, blocked-off project…
Mark Twain with Scrims
…sitting on the Rivers of America.
But the scrims have come down, revealing tons of scaffolding!
Mark Twain with Scaffolding
The beloved riverboat deserves some TLC and now is the perfect time to do that, considering the boat is no longer needed for the Fantasmic! show. ( The show is set to return in Spring 2024 .)

While Disney has yet to share how long the refurbishment will last, we know it will still be ongoing through November 29th–which is as far out as Disneyland’s calendar goes.

Things To Do
Entertainment, entertainment | disneyland closes 4 attractions during busy festival season.
The timing of the attraction closures coincides with the 2024 Food & Wine Festival that starts March 1 at Disney California Adventure.
Radiator Springs Racers, Incredicoaster, Redwood Creek Challenge Trail and the Sailing Ship Columbia will temporarily close in late February or early March as part of Disneyland’s standard refurbishment schedule.
The four new attraction closures join the Astro Orbiter, Grizzly River Run, Haunted Mansion, Splash Mountain and “Fantasmic” that were already shuttered for refurbishment.
DCA’s Radiator Springs Racers in Cars Land will close Monday, Feb. 26 through March 1 for a brief refurbishment.
The Incredicoaster in Pixar Pier will go down March 4-14 for a slightly longer seasonal refurbishment.

Redwood Creek Challenge Trail will close on March 4 for an extended refurbishment that will stretch though at least early April, according to the Disneyland website.
The ropes, nets and interactive elements in the wilderness adventure play area are expected to be refurbished or replaced during the closure, according to MiceChat .
A temporary closure of the Sailing Ship Columbia will be short-lived on Monday, Feb. 26 through Thursday, Feb. 29.
The Mark Twain Riverboat is scheduled to return Saturday, Feb. 24 from a five-month refurbishment.
Scaffolding has surrounded the paddlewheeler since mid-September while the riverboat that plays a key role in “Fantasmic” gets a heavy dose of TLC during the nighttime spectacular’s extended downtime.

The Grizzly River Run will remain closed through Thursday, Feb. 29 during the coldest part of the year in typically sunny Southern California when fewer visitors want to get soaked on the water ride.
Astro Orbiter closed in late November for an extensive refurbishment. The rocket spinner ride at the entrance to Tomorrowland in Disneyland is expected to return March 14.
The Haunted Mansion closed in January for an extensive renovation of the outdoor queue area that will add a new accessibility elevator for wheelchair users exiting the ride and a new retail shop at the attraction’s exit. Disneyland has not announced a reopening date for the popular dark ride.
The latest temporary closures don’t include Splash Mountain — which is undergoing an extensive conversion into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure . The Critter Country log flume ride is scheduled to reopen with a new “Princess and the Frog” theme in late 2024.
“Fantasmic” will return May 24 after a yearlong hiatus following an inferno that engulfed the show’s audio-animatronic fire-breathing dragon.
Also not on the temporarily “out of order” list are several attractions that never returned following the yearlong pandemic closure that shuttered Disneyland and DCA.
Disneyland’s Star Wars Launch Bay and DCA’s Blue Sky Cellar are being used for Imagination Campus — an educational travel workshop that teaches students about the arts and sciences used in Disney theme parks.
The Magic Eye Theater in Tomorrowland remains dark with no upcoming show in the works.
The Hyperion Theater in Hollywood Land briefly returned for a summertime run of “Rogers: The Musical” before closing again with nothing planned for the 2,000-seat Broadway caliber venue.
The Fantasyland Theatre no longer has regularly scheduled shows after the “Tale of the Lion King” ended its run in early January.

Fantasmic! at Disneyland Resort
The nighttime spectacular will return on May 24th, 2024 . When the show returns, it will not include the Maleficent dragon figure but will “feature new special effects and a thrilling new battle scene between Sorcerer Mickey and Maleficent.”
Disneyland officials said, “Our goal is to always deliver the best possible show for our guests. With that in mind, we are planning the return of ‘Fantasmic!’ with exciting new magic in spring 2024. As teams continue work on the show, we have launched nightly entertainment on the Rivers of America .”
Rivers of America
So although you can’t see Fantasmic! right now in Disneyland, you will have a chance to see Queenie and the Jambalaya Jazz Band every evening. The band performs every night on a New Orleans-themed raft as they float down the Rivers of America. You can expect “high-energy New Orleans tunes, plus other Disney favorites.”
There are three performances each evening, beginning at 7:35PM — all performance times are listed in the Disneyland app.
Additionally, a new show is now showing on the Rivers of America . It’s called “ The Heartbeat of New Orleans — A Living Mural .” The show is “set to a dynamic jazz score” and features projections on the Rivers of America following the story of a “mischievous little frog from the bayou that leaps into the lively heartbeat of New Orleans when he is lured by the jazzy sounds he hears in the distance.”

Hi! We are planning a trip to Disneyland at the end of August, but is that when the Haunted Mansion closes to change to Nightmare before Christmas? Do you know when it will be closing this year to make that change….or for how long it will be closed? Thanks!!

Hi Beth! Last year Haunted Mansion closed on August 15th for the holiday overlay and stayed closed for about 2 and a half weeks. Disneyland has not announced the closure dates for this year, but we expect to hear about that around July, most likely.

My big question is, IS there a schedule for the Sailing Ship Columbia? I have been to Disneyland too many times to count, beginning in 1964 and in all that time NEVER has this ship been operating when I was there! This year may very well be my last year to ride that beauty and I am planning on attending in November as the Christmas holiday extravaganza begins. Have you any inside knowledge on this particular attraction? Greatly appreciate any insight you may be able to give!
