Hi Gemma, Thank you so much for the zoom call today; it's such an enjoyable part of the course. I got full clarification on feedback, could ask questions and gain more insight into leading a department successfully.I would highly recommend the course to anyone who needs that extra push and confidence boost before stepping up or starting a new role. I also love how the course is always available to you upon completion, so you can also go back for reference if needed. Plus, Gemma is lovely and is thorough in her work; I can trust that I am learning from one of the best (albeit virtually!)
Georgia Orme, Advanced Interior Management & Head of Service Student
I greatly enjoyed the course, I found it full of useful and new information. I loved the mixture of reading, download and video material, it made for an easy and interesting study. Having the quizzes at the end of each module pushed me to remember the information I was writing down and is an effective way to raise the study level. I would recommend this course to anyone wanting to feel confident starting out behind the bar learning some key skills, methods and setting you up well to grow as a mixologist!

What Our Students Say
“I have been on a Superyacht for six months and I absolutely love it! The crew is great and the owners are wonderful. We left Florida two weeks ago and we are on a three month trip over to California! We made a stop in Cuba and the owners invited all of the crew to go on day trips with the guests to sight see! Now we are in the Cayman Islands. From here we head through the Panama Canal and then we go to Panama City, Papagallo Peninsula Costa Rica then Cabo San Lucas, before we end up to Southern California. This is such a great experience for me. I do stewardess work, cook for crew and guests, handle lines when docking and leaving as well as watch shifts while we’re underway. I just wanted to say thanks again for all the valuable training I received in my classes! Thank you!”
Jessica Benway – Stewardess
“I am so excited!!! I went for my first interview yesterday afternoon at an agency and got a call from them later on advising that they’d put me forward for a 2nd stewardess position and to expect a call from the captain. He rang this morning and we met at Starbucks and… they are flying me up on Friday! It’s happened so fast, but it felt right. The yacht is currently in Norfolk, Virginia and we will be heading out very soon to spend the season in New England. The captain was really laid back and very forthcoming. Apparently the yacht is privately owned by a wealthy guy (obviously) and isn’t chartered out very often. Mostly they do cocktail parties. He thinks we will be in the Mediterranean next year although he is waiting on confirmation from the owner. The pace on the yacht seems very relaxed. It will be a great place for me to learn as much as possible. I am so keen to get started. Thank you!”
Carlie – Stewardess
“Everything is going GREAT for me over here! We have travelled from Fort Lauderdale all the way along the East Coast up to Labrador, Canada over 4000 miles so far. My roster is split so I spend the first part of the day as a deckhand and the second part of the day as the second stewardess onboard a 154 foot SuperYacht. The owners are fantastic. I really enjoyed the interior crew course and feel so much more prepared for my stewardess role.”
Katie Ford – Stewardess and Deckhand
“I was totally impressed by the STCW training I received at the Superyacht Crew Academy. The instructors were excellent, the equipment top notch, and I truly feel confident that I would perform well in the case of an emergency aboard ship. Thank you Chris and Deb for being so helpful to me. As a foreign student coming to Australia for this training, your kindness was extra meaningful. I am now a Superyacht Agent in Noumea and spend a lot of time aboard superyachts. Even though I am not a member of the crews, my STCW training is right there in the back of my mind just in case there was an emergency; especially when refuelling, helping resupply the medical equipment or moving heavy equipment on and off the superyachts.”
Chloe Morin – Super yacht Agent Noumea Ocean Services
“You are by far the most professional and successful training facility that I have dealt with around the world. Keep up the amazing work!”
Nick Smith – Chief Officer M/Y Akula
“A big thank you for your professionalism to all people from the Superyacht Crew Academy. Your team really made this experience unforgettable.”
Laurent Dreyer – Fastrack Graduate
“My experience with Superyacht Crew Academy was amazing. I had a fantastic time on the deck crew course and learnt a lot more than I expected.”
Tom Armstrong – Deckhand
“In my first interview I got offered a job! I really liked the chief stewardess so I am on a 43m private Superyacht for the season. I have been on the boat for two weeks and so far all is going well. I am looking forward to a good season and I will be home for Christmas. Two other people who did the course with me, Emily and Adam also got jobs very easily! Thank you again for all of your support and giving us a great head start!”
Ashtyn Leary – Stewardess
“The instructors were excellent, very professional and thorough. My training at Superyacht Crew Academy made my job as stewardess aboard the Tango possible and enjoyable. It really helps to have the inside story from experts before you begin. I’m happy to recommend the Superyacht Crew Academy to anyone interested in working in this industry.”
Haley – Stewardess M/Y Tango
“I just wanted to say thank you to the staff at Superyacht Crew Academy. I am currently working on a 43m M/Y Eclipse which is situated in Israel during the winter and the Mediterranean in the summer. I am heading into my third week here, now crossing to Genoa, Italy for the boat show. I am a 3rd stewardess and loving it. We are now in Kotor in Montenegro near Croatia and it is absolutely stunning. I am loving my job and have been lucky enough to rotate with duties and will be doing service this week, in a few hours actually. Thank you for all your help!”
Lauren A – Stewardess
” I thought I would give you a quick update on my adventures. I’ve just finished a cruise on an expedition vessel and am back in Antibes looking for a new position as a stewardess. Thank you for the casual work experience I did while completing my interior course. It’s definitely a lot better now that I have the right qualifications and some experience. I’m finding that there is so much more available to me.”
Natasha Harris – Stewardess
“Thank you for all the help and support that you gave me when i was studying with you. it was amazing and I will no doubt be visiting again hopefully at the end of next year when I come to do my Yacht Master OffShore. The Boat has offered me an awesome opportunity to learn all there is to learn as well as an awesome salary, benefits, and program. Not to mention the crew are a happy bunch of people and we are like a large family…. I have learned that the crew makes the boat and that is the main thing, not the salary, benefits or program!”
Joshua McCouat – Deckhand

Yacht Stewardess Training to Work as Interior Crew
September 16, 2018 By Julie Perry
If you are 100 percent confident that you want a crew job in the superyacht industry, then you need to think about training. There are two essentials: Plan on taking a five-day STCW Basic Safety Training Course (which is mandatory) and then a comprehensive three- to five-day yacht steward/ess training course . Once those two weeks are up, your chances of being hired as an entry-level stew are vastly improved… as is your confidence.
I Must Confess…
Yacht stew training was mind-boggling..
When I signed up for yacht stewardess training, I was under the impression that this was simply a course on serving food and being a hostess to the guests. To my surprise, they spent an entire day teaching us nautical terms and familiarizing us with the layout of a yacht. For someone who didn’t have much recreational-boating experience outside of water skiing on lakes in northern Indiana, it was exactly what I needed. (Perhaps it’s news to you, as it was to me, that the various sides of a boat are referred to as port, starboard, aft, and forward.)
We also learned how to tie knots and handle lines because, they forewarned us (as I have you), oftentimes the stew is called out on deck to help the deckhands when the yacht is docking. I took full advantage of the opportunity to become versed in these basic and introductory yachting terms, and the effort wound up saving me from some otherwise embarrassing moments when I took my first job.
In the remaining days, they taught everything from how to serve caviar to how to iron a shirt properly. But it didn’t stop there. In fact, they spent half a day going over cleaning products and which ones to use on which surfaces.
We spent time on how to get out each kind of stain—be it on laundry or interior fabrics. We learned how to fold sheets, make beds, and polish silver. And of most benefit, we learned all about the types and methods of silver service and were even expected to perform our newly acquired skills in the practical portion of the class.
It was a week of heavy learning, but less than a week after earning my certificate, I got my first job.
I am confident that had I not completed the course, I would not have been hired for the position. If you want to know the truth, I think the chief stew on that boat (who, by the way, had not taken the course) pushed to get me hired so she could pick my brain on what I’d learned. And yes, once onboard, I often wondered how any entry-level stew could get away without having this training.

Think all this talk of laundry, cleaning, and guest service sounds like back-breaking work? Well, it’s certainly not easy. Being a yacht stewardess is a physically demanding job, if not also mentally challenging when you figure in having to communicate with and get along with so many different types of people in such a confined space. (And by that, I mean getting along with the guests and the crew.)
Take a look at this video, “ Happy Working Stews ,” a 1st Place winner in the Comedy genre of the 2010 Fort Yachtie Da International Film Festival , a fun yacht-crew event produced each year by Crew Unlimited and C U Yacht Charters (happening this year on November 16, 2013). This video was done by Mish Marchio, and is superb. Note: the video doesn’t begin playing until around the :22-second mark:
Makes it look kinda fun, huh? Well, it certainly can be!
So is specialized stew training mandatory? No…at least not yet. But I cannot recommend it highly enough!
The introductory interior and exterior courses, even though these are not mandatory courses, have been developed to give you the skills, knowledge, and confidence to understand what your job entails as a professional steward/ess aboard or deckhand aboard a superyacht.” —Joy Weston, owner and operator of Crew Pacific (Australia) since 2001
One of the main reasons I advocate this training is because it will help you to land a job much faster. Of course, you also have to look at it this way: You want to be as prepared as possible so that you are as comfortable as possible when you accept your first position. You wouldn’t take on a job working at a computer all day if you had no idea how to type, would you? Having specialized stew training prior to taking employment on a yacht will give you confidence that you know what you are doing, and that will be reflected in your attitude and demeanor with your fellow crew and guests.
Check the various training schools’ websites for yacht stewardess training courses (also known as interior crew training ) to see if any are offering package deals where you can sign up for both STCW Basic Safety Training and an Interior Crew Course together at a discount. Remember, you’ll make this money back in the first month of full-time employment. Consider it an investment.
Another way to get started on your way to landing a job as a luxury yacht stewardess is to read my book, “ The Insiders’ Guide to Becoming a Yacht Stewardess: Confessions from My Years Afloat with the Rich and Famous ” – 2nd Edition.

In response to an increase in demand for well-trained interior yacht crew, the Stewardess Training Academy was established in Palma in June 2016. Formed by Jess Barnard and Erin Bloom - former yacht crew stewardesses - the training academy aims to imbue both inexperienced and experienced interior crew with the skills to offer exceptional service and a distinguished sense of professionalism.
"When we started the academy, we thought that we would mainly be working with green stews, but, to our surprise, we have been training a lot of stews with a few years' experience in the industry. It can be hard for stews that already have experience to admit they need training, but some boats don't have the time to conduct formal training on board, so it makes sense that they want to do certified courses, " commented Bloom.
The academy partners with many other organisations to offer a diverse range of courses - each of which is designed to develop stews' long-term career aspirations and boost their confidence. Course topics include an introduction to the interior, food service, barista, silver service, floristry and plant care, yoga, and wine. With competition for yacht crew jobs increasing, it is essential to maximise your skillset; building a strong arsenal of skills can open more doors to jobs on yachts .
Set in a beautiful 3-storey villa in the heart of Alaro, Palma, the Stewardess Training Academy provides a memorable learning experience, as well as a sure-fire way to a enhance your skills. The beautiful island was selected as the academy's base due to its importance as an international yachting hub. Currently, many yacht crew live on the island, but there are few interior training facilities in the region. Jess and Erin recognise the transient nature of the yachting industry and are committed to evolving with industry demand.
Bloom commented on the academy and the students that enrolled there: "Since we started the business we've received a constant influx of emails, and have had girls (and guys) signing up for courses all the way into the summer months. I think this is indicative of the importance placed on interior training, not only by employers but also by interior crews themselves. Yachting is more competitive than in the past and green crew especially are looking to do more courses to give themselves the edge. So too, employers call on this as a deciding factor not only in the employment of newbies that have additional skills but also as testament of crew members that are more committed and that choose to invest in themselves and their careers. I believe that the same is true for seasoned crew. We were surprised to find that our courses are most popular among steward/esses that already have various years of experience and are still seeking extra tutelage.
Various associations are campaigning for there to be a set standard and we too see the need just through the students, employers and recruiters that desire interior crew to have additional training. There is an all round call for interior roles and training to carry more weight. We have also found that stewards and stewardesses often require training as a confidence boost. As so many boats are unique in the ways that things are done and with longevity perhaps limiting a broadened experience, many seek to brush up on their skills or require the affirmation that what they have learned is correct and of a high enough standard in order to progress in their roles. "
To date, many interior crew have taken advantage of Jess and Erin's experience and knowledge. Leanne Eldridge, one of the course's former students, said: "[It was a] fantastic, practical and very thorough course. It was so great to be taught by, and have questions answered by, ladies who have so much industry experience. Both Erin and Jess were super helpful, accommodating, and fun. I would highly recommend [the course]! "
Thomas Percival also paid testament to the academy and the organisers: "This course was very informative and great fun. I learned lots of useful skills for the future. The instructors were very friendly and approachable. "

Mikoyan Gurevich MiG 3 172IAP For the Party of Bolsheviks with Nikolai Sheyenko May 1942 01
Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3
National origin:- Soviet Union Role:- Fighter Interceptor Manufacturer:- Mikoyan-Gurevich Designer:- First flight:- 29th October 1940 Introduction:- 1941 Status:- Retired 1945 Produced:- 1940-1941 Number built:- 3,422 Primary users:- Soviet Air Forces (VVS); Soviet Air Defence Forces (PVO); Soviet Naval Aviation Developed from:- Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-1 Variants:- Mikoyan-Gurevich I-211 Operational history MiG-3s were delivered to frontline fighter regiments beginning in the spring of 1941 and were a handful for pilots accustomed to the lower-performance and docile Polikarpov I-152 and I-153 biplanes and the Polikarpov I-16 monoplane. It remained tricky and demanding to fly even after the extensive improvements made over the MiG-1. Many fighter regiments had not kept pace in training pilots to handle the MiG and the rapid pace of deliveries resulted in many units having more MiGs than trained pilots during the German invasion. By 1 June 1941, 1,029 MIG-3s were on strength, but there were only 494 trained pilots. In contrast to the untrained pilots of the 31st Fighter Regiment, those of the 4th Fighter Regiment were able to claim three German high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft shot down before war broke out in June 1941. However high-altitude combat of this sort was to prove to be uncommon on the Eastern Front where most air-to-air engagements were at altitudes well below 5,000 metres (16,000 ft). At these altitudes the MiG-3 was outclassed by the Bf 109 in all respects, and even by other new Soviet fighters such as the Yakovlev Yak-1. Furthermore, the shortage of ground-attack aircraft in 1941 forced it into that role as well, for which it was totally unsuited. Pilot Alexander E. Shvarev recalled: "The Mig was perfect at altitudes of 4,000 m and above. But at lower altitudes it was, as they say, 'a cow'. That was the first weakness. The second was its armament: weapons failure dogged this aircraft. The third weakness was its gunsights, which were inaccurate: that's why we closed in as much as we could and fired point blank." On 22 June 1941, most MiG-3s and MiG-1s were in the border military districts of the Soviet Union. The Leningrad Military District had 164, 135 were in the Baltic Military District, 233 in the Western Special Military District, 190 in the Kiev Military District and 195 in the Odessa Military District for a total of 917 on hand, of which only 81 were non-operational. An additional 64 MiGs were assigned to Naval Aviation, 38 in the Air Force of the Baltic Fleet and 26 in the Air Force of the Black Sea Fleet. The 4th and 55th Fighter Regiments had most of the MiG-3s assigned to the Odessa Military District and their experiences on the first day of the war may be taken as typical. The 4th, an experienced unit, shot down a Romanian Bristol Blenheim reconnaissance bomber, confirmed by postwar research, and lost one aircraft which crashed into an obstacle on takeoff. The 55th was much less experienced with the MiG-3 and claimed three aircraft shot down, although recent research confirms only one German Henschel Hs 126 was 40% damaged, and suffered three pilots killed and nine aircraft lost. The most unusual case was the pair of MiG-3s dispatched from the 55th on a reconnaissance mission to PloieÅŸti that failed to properly calculate their fuel consumption and both were forced to land when they ran out of fuel. Most of the MiG-3s assigned to the interior military districts were transferred to the PVO where their lack of performance at low altitudes was not so important. On 10 July 299 were assigned to the PVO, the bulk of them belonging to the 6th PVO Corps at Moscow, while only 293 remained with the VVS, and 60 with the Naval Air Forces, a total of only 652 despite deliveries of several hundred aircraft. By 1 October, on the eve of the German offensive towards Moscow codenamed Operation Typhoon, only 257 were assigned to VVS units, 209 to the PVO, and 46 to the Navy, a total of only 512, a decrease of 140 fighters since 10 July, despite deliveries of over a thousand aircraft in the intervening period. By 5 December, the start of the Soviet counter-offensive that drove the Germans back from the gates of Moscow, the Navy had 33 MiGs on hand, the VVS 210, and the PVO 309. This was a total of 552, an increase of only 40 aircraft from 1 October. Over the winter of 1941-42 the Soviets transferred all of the remaining MiG-3s to the Navy and PVO so that on 1 May 1942 none were left on strength with the VVS. By 1 May 1942, Naval Aviation had 37 MiGs on strength, while the PVO had 323 on hand on 10 May. By 1 June 1944, the Navy had transferred all its aircraft to the PVO, which reported only 17 on its own strength, and all of those were gone by 1 January 1945. Undoubtedly more remained in training units and the like, but none were assigned to combat units by then.
