World's biggest rubber duck: A Duluth man's quacky idea has outsized impact
Towering six stories above the ground, bright yellow with a big round belly, the world’s largest rubber duck certainly looks the part at the Festival of Sail in Two Harbors, Minn., along the North Shore of Lake Superior.
“She’s a big girl,” concedes Craig Samborski, the Duluth-based entrepreneur who puts on tall ships festivals around the country, and had the first giant duck built back in 2014.
"The only thing I knew was it was going to be really smart, or really dumb. That sort of sums up being an entrepreneur in a sentence,” he said, looking back on his decision to spend more than $50,000 to have it made.
He’s looked pretty smart ever since. The duck has since traveled the country, bringing smiles wherever it goes.

"When you're little you had the rubber duck in your bathtub, you got it for your kids...and he's fricking adorable, right?” exclaimed Teresa Sessions of Mondovi, Wisc., after posing for a picture in front of the duck with her friend Betty Staab.
"This duck brings so much joy to people,” said Samborski, soaking in the scene. “And I feel super lucky that I'm the guy that gets to be on the receiving end of their joy."
‘Go big or go home’
The world's largest rubber duck was born on something of a dare. In 2014, Samborski was in Los Angeles working on a tall ships festival. Over drinks one evening a city employee also on the project threw down a challenge.
"He said to me, he's like, you're a nice event planner from Minnesota, Craig. But you're in L.A. and you need to go big, or go home."
His idea? Make the world's largest rubber duck, to help draw more people to the tall ships festival.
"And, you know, I had enough beer in me that I [thought] that's a great idea," Samborski recalled.
But next morning he woke up, thinking, how the heck do I make something like this? So he called up David Scherba, who runs a company called Inflatable Images outside Cleveland.
Scherba and his brother were hot air balloonists in the 1970s when they came up with the idea to blow cold air into giant inflatables to use as advertising.
You could say the business, blew up. Since then they’ve created custom-built inflatables for just about every Fortune 100 company, making everything from giant beer cans to an 80-foot tall Pinnochio.
So it didn’t faze them when Samborski called, asking, “can you make me a giant rubber duck?”
"It was a crazy call, but not an unusual call,” said Scherba. “Because, you know, being in the business that I'm in, I get crazy calls for crazy things all the time."
The duck was such a hit at that first event in L.A., Samborski trucked her across the country to the next tall ships festival in Philadelphia.
But that one didn't go as well.
"The duck sunk to the bottom of the Delaware River on live television,” remembers Bob Hom, who Samborski hired to help wrangle the duck around the country.
Hom is the retired operations director at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center. He actually gave Samborski his first job when he was 14.
Since that disaster on the Delaware, Hom said the duck's popularity has really taken off. He said it’s hard to explain the effect it has on people.
"When you see it, what it does to people. It's just amazing,” Hom said. “When we're in restaurants, whatever city we're in, they treat us like we're rock stars when they find out we're the duck wranglers. We're like a big deal. It’s just bizarre."
Samborski said it's almost like a religion. People have wept with joy upon seeing it for the first time. They’ve flown to the U.S. from Japan and other countries to see it in person. A young couple each had the duck tattooed on their ankles and tracked him down to take a selfie. He gets at least a dozen emails a day from fans.
"I have pictures of so many people's rubber duck collections. You know, mariachi band rubber ducks, bride and groom rubber ducks, Frankenstein rubber ducks, vampire rubber ducks. It's just endless,” Samborski said.
Some duck haters
But it hasn't all gone so — swimmingly — for the giant duck. There are duck haters out there, Samborsksi said, offended by its kitschiness . Several years ago a Dutch artist accused him of stealing his idea , a charge Samborski denies.
The duck’s design is based on the original 1930s toy that's now in the public domain, he said.
And this spring he had to pay for a replacement rubber duck, after the original was damaged at the grand opening of Tesla's giant new electric car plant in Texas. Yes, apparently even Elon Musk is a fan. “Elon said the duck has to be here,” he was told.
Samborski estimates he’s spent around $300,000 on the two ducks, the 30,000-pound steel pontoon he had specially made to hold the old duck in place in the water, and other expenses, including the cost to trademark the slogan “the world’s largest rubber duck.”
He said the duck itself hasn’t quite broken even yet. But merchandise sales helped pay his oldest daughter’s college tuition (one of the more popular t-shirts reads “I like big ducks and I cannot lie,” and features a row of duck behinds).
When Samborski was younger he produced huge events, including stadium shows for the band Metallica. Back then, he said, he was all about the “glitz and glamour.”
Now, he said witnessing the joy that the giant duck brings to people has completely changed his mindset toward his business.
The redesigned duck is much easier and cheaper to set up and transport, so Samborksi hopes to bring it to more places, including nonprofit fundraisers, and eventually, overseas.
The world’s largest rubber duck began as a great marketing gag, he said. Now, he’s absorbed some of that same joy the duck has brought to others.
“I mean, she's a part of me now. She's a part of my spirit now.”

Quack, quack.
The world’s largest rubber duck is coming to Michigan.
The massive yellow duck is among several attractions coming to Alpena and Marquette as part of the 2022 Festival of Sail.
“We’re excited to bring this incredible festival, along with the world’s largest rubber duck, to Alpena,” said Craig Samborski, Festival of Sail producer. “Alpena’s previous history with the ships, layout and partnership with the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center made for an excellent fit.”
The popular festival will take place at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center waterfront on Lake Huron in Alpena July 15-17. The ships, and the rubber duck, will make their way to Marquette’s Mattison Lower Harbor Park on Lake Superior Aug. 12-14.
“Certainly something like having a giant duck is unique, and it will be Ore to Shore weekend so it’ll already be a busy weekend, but as some local people have mentioned, it’s a great thing for kids to do,” said Susan Estler, Travel Marquette Executive Director, told WLUC-TV.
Additional ships expected to be on site include the Nao Trinidad from Seville, Spain, the Pride of Baltimore II, a reproduction of a typical early 19th-century “Baltimore clipper” topsail schooner and the U.S. Brig Niagara, a 118-foot-tall, two-masted, square-rigged sailing vessel modeled after American ships that defeated the British at the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812.
On board tours, dockside tours, vendors, food, music, entertainment, and a craft beer garden will also be available.
Tickets are available online ( Alpena , Marquette ). Cost is between $29 and $99 depending on the package.

More than a dozen tall ships and a six-story-high Rubber Duck are scheduled to sail into Los Angeles’ harbor at 2 p.m. Wednesday (today) at the start of the Tall Ships Festival L.A.
The duck, an inflatable art project that’s turned up in cities around the world, will lead the parade.
Before the event begins, ships are to gather around noon in the waters off Point Fermin Park at South Gaffey Street and Paseo del Mar before sailing into the main channel.
Best high points to watch the action: Point Fermin and Angeles Gate Park at the Korean Bell (Gaffey and 37th streets). Both should offer good views of the lineup.
Closer to the water, visitors can go to Ports O’ Call Village , where it costs $5 to park (enter from Harbor Boulevard and 6th Street) or buy a ticket ($15 to $19) to enter the Festival Grounds and get a dockside view.
Rubber Duck, created by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, will be “tethered to a heavy round barge” to keep it from blowing away and will be illuminated until 11 each night, the event’s website says.
Boats in the lineup include the sailing yacht Jada from San Diego, the Tole Mour schooner from Catalina Island, the American Pride based in Southern California and the Irving Johnson and Exy Johnson, both named L.A.’s official tall ships.
The festival features onboard tours, day sails, entertainment and DIY projects at Crafted , the arts-and-crafts marketplace at 112 E. 22nd St. in San Pedro. The festival is scheduled to run from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Tall ships, six-story rubber duck heading to alpena.
Courtesy Photo The World’s Largest Rubber Duck will visit Alpena July 15 to 17 during the Festival of Sail, which will also feature three replicas of historic ships, sailing in from all over the country and world, including one from Seville, Spain. Pictured here is a man standing in front of the six-story rubber duck, which was made in a factory in the U.S.
ALPENA – She’s a big rubber ducky, and Thunder Bay is about to be her bathtub.
For the first time ever, the Festival of Sail is coming to Alpena July 15 to 17 at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center. The festival will feature historic ships and an enormous yellow duck.
Mama Duck, the World’s Largest Rubber Duck, was “born” in the U.S. in 2014, in a factory near Cleveland, Ohio, called Scherba Industries. She made her first appearance in August of that year in Los Angeles.
“I’ve been producing these tall ship festivals for about a dozen years,” said duck owner and Festival of Sail producer Craig Samborski, who hails from Duluth, Minnesota.
He travels all over the country with the duck, who is inflated at each location. When she is fully inflated, she stands 61 feet high, 69 feet wide, 79 feet long, and weighs 31,500 pounds, or roughly 15 tons, including the steel pontoon she sits on, Samborski said. Mama Duck alone weighs only 1,250 pounds, but she needs a lot of support.
Courtesy Photo The Nao Trinidad from Seville, Spain, is one of three ships scheduled to visit Alpena July 15 to 17 for the Festival of Sail, along with the World’s Largest Rubber Duck.
So, yeah, she’s kind of chubby. But that’s what makes her so awesome.
“She’s a portly gal,” Samborski said.
The giant duck plan was born among drinking buddies. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
“You know, when you’ve had a few beers, everything sounds great,” Samborski said with a laugh. “I woke up the next morning going, ‘Oh my god, what did I commit to?’ But, about 12 weeks later, I took delivery of the World’s Largest Rubber Duck.”
He still thinks it’s a good, even great, idea.
Courtesy Photo The Pride of Baltimore II is one of three ships scheduled to visit Alpena July 15 to 17 for the Festival of Sail, along with the World’s Largest Rubber Duck.
So does almost everyone who meets Mama Duck, including multibillionaire Elon Musk.
“Elon Musk is a fan of the duck, and he and Tesla had us bring the duck to the grand opening of his new Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, which was a wildly cool experience for us and our team,” Samborski said.
Samborski is proud to own the gigantic vessel or toy, whichever floats your boat. She actually does float, with the help of a large steel pontoon, also made in the U.S., in Ontario, California.
“That thing is just enormous — it travels via semi,” he said of the pontoon base.
Samborski is bringing Mama Duck and her baby duck, which is a mere 10 feet tall, to Alpena.
Come for the ducks, but stay for the ships, as three historic replicas are sailing in, one all the way from Seville, Spain. That ship is the Nao Trinidad, and she will be joined by the Pride of Baltimore II and the U.S. Brig Niagara.
“They’re like the ships you see in the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movies,” Samborski said.
“It’s extraordinary,” Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary Resource Protection Coordinator Stephanie Gandulla said of hosting the festival. “We were thrilled when Craig reached out to the sanctuary to say he wanted to bring the Festival of Sail to Alpena. We have developed a reputation for being very welcoming to many different guests, but especially the tall ships and network that sail the Great Lakes.”
She looks forward to presenting more maritime history to guests.
“This is maritime history, really, from around the world,” Gandulla said. “One of the ships is coming from Spain, the Trinidad … the Niagara is such an integral part of Great Lakes history, Pride of Baltimore, American history, so it is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about what we focus on here … A reminder that we’re connected to our waterways around the world.”
When Samborski approached the sanctuary about hosting the festival, Gandulla thought, “that’s right up our alley.”
Shipwreck alley, that is.
“What better way to celebrate our maritime history than with something so affiliated with water,” Gandulla said of hosting the World’s Largest Rubber Duck. “So I think it’s going to be pretty special to Alpena to have something so unique.”
Samborski first visited Alpena about a month ago, and he looks forward to coming back.
“I think Alpena is incredibly cool and charming,” he said. He visited the Red Brick Tap and Barrel while here, and he will definitely eat there again. “For a community that size, it just seems so vibrant. It’s so beautiful. I think when you think of Norman Rockwell’s America, Alpena, for me, would come to the top of that list.”
The festival runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on July 15, 16, and 17. Tickets are available online at alpena.festofsail.com.
Ticket prices vary, based on whether you want to tour the ships or sail out onto the water on the Pride of Baltimore II, which is scheduled to set sail each day at 4:30 p.m.
Daily festival entry starts at $19 per person. All ticket prices include viewing the giant duck up-close. On-board tours include festival entry at $33 per person per day, or discounted family pricing of $29 per person per day.
“It’s truly a festival,” Gandulla added. “They’re arranging vendors and musicians. It’s something you don’t want to miss.”

What Happened To World's Largest Rubber Duck At Tall Ships Festival?
June 26, 2015 / 5:43 PM EDT / CBS Philadelphia
By Diana Rocco
CAMDEN, NJ (CBS) – If you're headed out to the Tall Ships Festival on the waterfront on Friday, you may find something is missing.
The world's largest rubber duck isn't there.
Eyewitness News has learned there was a problem with the rubber duck during the parade of ships on Thursday.
The pontoon the duck came in on took on some water, and it turns out there were lots of holes in "Mama Duck," and that is why she was sitting lopsided.
Eyewitness News is told all is not lost, Rocky the baby duck is at Wiggins Park where kids can take pictures with him.
Event organizers say, "We brought the duck to the shore and when we were taking out the pontoon boat we discovered the duck had some ducky bruises, some rips and tears. We are in the process of repairing the duck. She is in the water and we hope to have her up soon."
Organizers say monitor the Tall Ships Facebook page for updates on Mama Duck, but she should be back up by at least the end of the weekend.
The fireworks on the Delaware River have also been postponed until Sunday night.

World’s Largest Rubber Duck Visits the Bay
If you happen to spot an enormous, yellow figure cresting the horizon in the coming weeks, do not be afraid. It is not a second sun ascending into the sky, but rather, the World’s Largest Rubber Duck, towering over Maryland’s waterways.
This whale of a waterfowl will be traveling to the Bay region for the first time this August. After making stops in Michigan and New York, the World’s Largest Rubber Duck makes a visit to the Leonardtown Wharf for its Wharf Fest party Aug. 4 through 6 and then will be in Crisfield for the Little Big Townfest at Somers Cove Marina Aug. 11 to 13. Both events will feature duck selfies, music, games and activities, vendors and food and drink.
Craig Samborski, the creator of this sunny touring inflatable, has traveled with Mama Duck all over the country since 2014 to spread smiles and inspire us all to enjoy and conserve our natural resources. Measuring in at a whopping 61 feet and weighing 15 tons, this larger-than-life bath toy, affectionately named “Mama Duck”, rivals the size of a sperm whale.
“It brings joy to people, when you look at something that is so whimsical, and totally exaggerated with its size,” Samborski says. “A rubber duck is one of the few global icons that everybody can identify.”
The tradition started as a quirky practice between fellow Jeep owners, leaving rubber ducks perched on each other’s windshields as a sign of their admiration. Working in collaboration with charitable organizations like the Kindness Duck Project, Samborski has continued to embark on his mission of spreading kindness and joy across the globe. Follow the duck at https://thebigduck.us/ or on social media.

World's largest rubber duck returns to Toronto's harbourfront
The world’s largest rubber duck is set to return to Toronto this fall.
The 60-foot-tall, 14.5 tonne inflatable bird, sometimes called Mama Duck, will make an appearance at the Toronto Waterfront Festival on Sept. 16 and 17.
This isn’t the duck’s first rodeo. Toronto last hosted the enormous yellow bird in 2017, when the duck made a splash in Toronto for Canada’s 150th anniversary.
“The number one program we continually get asked to bring back is by far the world’s largest rubber duck,” Nany Gavin, chair of the Toronto Waterfront Festival, said in a press release. “After six years, we are very excited to have Mama Duck back to Toronto’s waterfront to celebrate the last weekend of summer.”
In 2017, 75 per cent of Waterfront Festival visitors said the rubber duck was their main reason for attending.
Additional festival programming will be announced soon.

Bank Fishing Big Lakes and Reservoirs

When you go to a big reservoir or lake in Missouri, you often see lots of water and lots of fishing boats. You might be left wondering, how can I fish here if I don’t have a boat? The good news is you don’t have to have a big boat to get in on the angling action. If you follow these tips, you can have just as much success fishing big lakes and reservoirs without benefit of a boat.
Walk the Bank
Public boat ramps are an easy way to gain access to the water, but better fishing can often be found if you stay away from commonly used boat accesses. Moving down the bank away from the ramp can get you to unfished areas.
“I recommend Corps of Engineers accesses,” said Shane Bush, Table Rock Lake fisheries management biologist. “There are numerous lesser-used public access points at reservoirs that are at the end of public roads. However, anglers should make sure they know exactly what is public land. Contact the Corps of Engineers for questions about locations and whether or not they can fish there.”
Use Radial Casting
Once you find your fishing spot, it’s best to cast your line in many different directions before moving on to a new location. For example, while standing in one spot, make several casts into the water from one side, directly in front of you, and then to the other side. If you have no luck after doing this a couple times, move on down the bank. Target any fish habitat — aquatic plants and wood or rock piles — you come across.
Use Multiple Fishing Methods
Once you find a location, try setting up some rods on the bank with worms or other bait, while you fish with artificial lures nearby. Remember, if you use more than three poles at any one time, the additional poles must be labeled with your full name and address or conservation number.
Fishing Zones
Fish often congregate in areas above and below dams.
“At Stockton Lake from late February to early April, we have excellent bank fishing opportunities on and around the dam for walleye,” said Ben Parnell, fisheries management biologist at Stockton Lake.
For safety reasons, dams typically have a no fishing zone warning close to the dam, so look for posted signs or research zones before your trip.
Tributaries and Outflows
Samantha Clary, Lake of the Ozarks fisheries management biologist, recommends targeting inlets and outlets of lakes.
“Wherever there is incoming or outgoing water, there’s going to be food and fish,” Clary said. “Fish often use these areas for spawning where gravel banks are used for spawning beds.”
Bull Shoals Lake Fisheries Management Biologist Nathan Recktenwald has similar thoughts about southern Missouri locations.
“I would encourage anglers to concentrate on fishing tributaries during spawning migrations,” Recktenwald said. “From February through April, there are a lot of bank fishermen around the Tecumseh access on Norfork Lake, Haskins Ford on Bull Shoals Lake, Beaver Creek (Kissee Mills) on Bull Shoals Lake, and Powersite Dam on Bull Shoals Lake. They are there for the walleye and white bass spawning runs. During the spring black bass and crappie spawn in April and May, anglers can take advantage of bank fishing just about anywhere there are small gravel banks used for spawning beds by the fish.”
Manmade Structures
Most fish like to hang out near areas that can provide shelter and food. These areas do not have to be naturally formed.
“Manmade structures, such as walkways, bridge pilings, docks, and preventative erosion rip-rap areas, can also hold fish,” Recktenwald said.
Be aware that there are rules that do not allow close fishing around marinas and gas docks.
MDC Fish Attractors
MDC fisheries management biologists place brush, log, and rock piles in many lakes to attract fish. These fish attractor locations are recorded and can be found in the free MO Fishing app, available on Android and Apple platforms at short.mdc.mo.gov/Zi2.
“Check the MO Fishing app for a map that will show brush piles that have been installed near shore by MDC,” Clary said. “The Larry Gale Access on Lake of the Ozarks is an example of an area that offers brush piles sunk near shore.”
Points and Breaks
Annie Hentschke, Mark Twain Lake fisheries management biologist, recommends targeting points and breaks.
“Points are shoreline areas that extend out and slope gradually down and into deeper water,” Hentschke explained. “Breaks are areas where water conditions change — shallows begin, waves versus calm water, watercolor change, etc.”
Windswept Banks and Coves
A breeze or strong wind can cause currents that either push bait fish toward the shore or stir up microscopic food. Baitfish will concentrate in these windswept banks and coves, which then brings in larger fish.
“At Truman Reservoir, folks can catch catfish from the bank year-round,” said Chris Brooke, fisheries management biologist at Truman Reservoir. “You can catch white bass and hybrid striped bass on windswept banks in the fall and blue catfish through the winter.”
If you are fishing big reservoirs and lakes, be willing to try different strategies until you find what works on a particular day. All lakes are different and a strategy that works well at one lake may not work as well at another.
“Fishing from the bank can be challenging at Table Rock because the water is so clear, and fish are so deep most of the year,” Bush said. “It would probably be good to scale down your expectations on what you can catch from the bank in a large reservoir because of this. Sunfish species are easy to come by, and bass can be caught during certain times of the year near the bank.”
Bush and Brooke point out some similarities between Table Rock Lake and Truman Reservoir. They say to forget about trying to catch a crappie from the bank unless it’s mid-April through mid-May. If you’re wanting to target bass, they recommend fishing steeper sided banks where deep water is close by. In the spring, fish further up the river arms to target white bass and walleye.
So, you don’t have a boat? No problem. With a little planning and preparation, you can be successful and have a great time fishing big lakes from the bank.
